To escape the summer heat, head to the new Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale, an ideal indoor playground to reconnect with the natural world and learn about its splendors in a tangible and engaging way. Visitors of all ages are welcomed into America’s largest Butterfly pavilion, a lush, rainforest atrium where 2,000 to 3,000 thousand butterflies from around the world fly freely, alighting on fragrant flowering plants and a friendly visitor’s shoulder or finger. Some of the more fascinating species include the “Blue Morpho” with its brilliant blue color; the “Scarlet Mormon,” a beautiful red butterfly, the “Julia” bursting in orange hues; the “Flame Border Charaxef” an African butterfly with a deep burgundy coloring; and the enormous “Owl Butterfly.” So much more than an indoor museum, Butterfly Wonderland is a living, sensory experience. In addition to the Conservatory, with tropical plants, waterfalls and a large Koi pond with colorful species of fish, the facility includes a 3-D theatre showing the edited version of the “Flight of the Butterflies,” introducing visitors to the fascinating life of butterflies. There is also a Butterfly Emergence Gallery to observe the most dynamic stage of a butterfly metamorphosis and The “Rivers of the Amazon” with large freshwater aquariums that house creatures from the Amazon and other habitats. Through 10-foot picture windows, guests can view exotic fish and even salt water stingrays in a large touch tank. Other ways to learn more about nature’s wonder’s is the Live Ant Colony with 360-degree viewing to follow the ants to different environments and The Honey Bee Extravaganza is an intricate exhibit that features a series of beehives, protected by glass, that allow each visitor an unimpeded view as the bees produce honey and go about their daily activities. Be sure to visit the Butterfly Treasures gift shop for leisurely shopping and the Café for cool refreshments and lunch on a hot summer’s day. There is also a multi-purpose room for children’s summer birthday parties or private events. Some insider tips from the Chief Curator, Dayna Cooper, “While

the butterflies hatch all day in the Emergence Gallery, the best time is 10:00 am because butterflies have their own biological clocks and this seems to be the best time for emerging.” Also, “If you wear red, orange and yellow, the butterflies might be especially attracted to you.” Educational workshops are also scheduled throughout the year. The “Life Cycle of a Butterfly Workshop” is scheduled for Monday, August 26th. Guests will learn not only about the tropical butterflies but also about the 334 species of butterflies found

in Arizona. They will also be taught about the lifecycle of these incredible insects from egg, to caterpillar, to chrysalis and then to butterfly as they go through the transformation process. The class will also include tips about where to see butterflies in Arizona, suggested books for learning more about butterfly gardening and hands-on butterfly examples. Due to the interactive nature of the exhibits and over 150 species of butterflies, no two visits are the same. Watch for the “Fall Color Spectacular” in the autumn season and the “White Christmas” display in December. Butterfly Wonderland is located at 9500 East Via de Ventura in Scottsdale, AZ 85256 at the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

ABOUT THE FILM

COLUMNISTS STAN ROBINSON

FILM! SECTION

FILM!

,

RANDY MONTGOMERY

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With more than 22 years of experience in media production, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. E-mail him at Movies@StanRobinson.org.

JOSEPH J. AIRDO

Randy Montgomery’s reactions reveal the emotional intuition of an average moviegoer. With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. E-mail him at Randyjay7694@yahoo.com.

‘Maniac’

‘Unfinished Song’

Filmmaker Douglas Tirola explores the rebirth of the bartender and the comeback of the cocktail while featuring the world’s most renowned bartenders with access to the most exclusive bars in New York. (NR - 92 minutes)

Elijah Wood plays the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store whose obsession with a young artist (Nora Arnezeder) escalates until it becomes clear that she has unleashed a longrepressed compulsion in him to stalk and kill. (NR - 89 minutes)

Terence Stamp plays a grumpy pensioner who honors his wife’s passion for performing by joining the unconventional local choir to which she used to belong - a process that helps him build bridges with his estranged son (Christopher Eccleston). Vanessa Redgrave and Gemma Arterton also star. (PG-13 - 93 minutes)

Joseph: “Like a night out at a popular and therefore crowded nightclub, “Hey Bartender” comes across as too chaotic. Occasionally interesting and insightful but too often unfocused.”

BET, YOU

Joseph J. Airdo’s remarks represent the analytical perspective. With a bachelor’s degree in media analysis and criticism from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, Joseph contemplates the real life implications and applications of a motion picture’s themes in order to determine its existential purpose. E-mail him at joseph.airdo@gmail. com.

‘Hey Bartender’

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

Joseph: “By placing viewers in the driver’s seat for a firsthand look at a psychopath’s vicious actions and savage thoughts, “Maniac” is a merciless masterpiece of a motion picture.”

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

‘Independence Day’, starring Will Smith, was shot in just 72 days.

The actor who flew the helicopter in the last scene of ‘Predator’ (1987), Kevin Peter Hall, also played the role of The Predator.

June 19th, 2013 - July 2nd, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Stan: “Brought a tear to my eye with poignant performances, at 66 yrs old, a stark reminder that my own mortality is just around the corner and to cherish each day…” Randy: “Completely predictable, but extremely likeable. Vanessa Redgrave’s performance won me over as Marion. You can’t help but love it.” Joseph: “Unfinished Song” is gimmicky and manipulative but it is impossible to remain unmoved by its story of everlasting devotion and the essentiality of an optimistic outlook on life.”

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Filmmaker Douglas Tirola (‘Hey Bartender’) By Joseph J. Airdo

Director Franck Khalfoun (‘Maniac’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“Making a good drink is very important. But most people can be taught how to make a good drink. I think that what separates someone from being a good bartender in terms of the science and technical drink making and being a bartender that everybody remembers ... is the service. It is what they call being a Sage - a person who at any moment knows what everybody’s needs are at that bar.

“I was intrigued when Elijah [Wood]’s name came up because I think that, for me, the scarier people are always the normal, unsuspecting people. I think that it terrifies people to think that perhaps their next-door neighbor is a rapist, a killer, a pedophile or whatever. And Elijah has these very kind eyes. He has this image of being a nice guy. I thought that the idea of using him as a serial killer would be terrifying.

“Whether they need to be spoken to, whether they need to be left alone, whether they are looking to be introduced to somebody. Somebody who understands that you walk into a bar for that special moment when the music is right, the atmosphere is right and the crowd is right. It is like you are walking onto the set of your own movie and everything there is there to support that moment for you. The bartender is not the star of the show but maybe he is the supporting character.

“And it touches you because it creates a kind of empathy that I wanted to recreate in this movie which I had for the original character. If this guy is stuck and cannot control himself or keep himself from killing, then you are going to feel bad for him. The fear is that what you take away from it is to be scared of everyone around you because they all might be killers.

“When you go to a restaurant, somebody seats you, somebody else takes your order, somebody behind this wall who you cannot see makes your food, some other guy brings it out and then one of the people you met before brings you the check. Even when

it is nice, it is still somewhat impersonal. “I think that, in a world where things are increasingly less personal, this idea where you sit down at one of these cocktail bars and [the bartender] says, ‘So what do you like to drink?’ and ... he makes it right there in front of you is a really intimate interaction. Not to sound like the cynical filmmaker, but ... it is unbelievable how much you do not deal with people so much anymore. Everything is automated. So the idea of this thing happening right in front you with your bartender is a very special interaction today.” – Douglas Tirola

there. If you are not careful with the people around you and if you do not love your children, it is possible that they will not have the skills necessary to go through life in a positive way and end up hurting others. “Ultimately, I think that it is about being kind to one another. That may sound like a funny thing to say about a movie like ‘Maniac’ but that is what I would like people to take away from it. Be attentive. Be caring. I hope that people are entertained by the shock value of the film and pure thrill of it but I also hope that, in the end, they leave feeling, ‘I’m going to love people.’” – Franck Khalfoun

“That is initially what you might take away from this but that is a really sad thing to put out there. But I think what you can take away from this is that there is mental illness and neglect out

Best Patriotic Movies By JAy BoBBin Tom Cruise

“Top Gun” (1986) Patriotic to the extent of being labeled by some as “jingoism,” Tom Cruise’s adventure smash still is cited by many as one of the best recruiting ads the American military ever has had. “The American President” (1995) As he would on “The West Wing” and “The Newsroom,” writer Aaron Sorkin infused his script with his love for America into virtually every thought President Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) expressed.

LOVE! SECTION

Friendly and Flirting…When is the line crossed in technology? In the world of technology, text messages, and every other form of electronic messaging for that matter, are the worst things to ever hit the dating and relationship world. Why? Because you say something meaning it one way, but when received on the other end it’s taken the complete wrong way! So when you’re talking with someone through text, who isn’t your significant other, how do you know if what you’re saying could be taken the wrong way if your significant other were to see these messages? Here’s the sucky part, you don’t until they see them and it turns into a fight bigger than a UFC cage match. Before starting a fight over text message, email, or any other type of messaging that could be construed the wrong way ask yourself these questions about the situation. Do I trust my partner? Have they ever given me any reason not to trust them? If you feel the need to get upset, then what is the reasoning behind it? Did they do something to you in the past and you wonder if they’re up to their old habits again? If you can answer yes to these questions then stop and ask yourself why you’re with this person, why would you want to stay with a person that goes behind your back? Where did you find the message? Was it on their cell phone that has no password or left up on their computer that you have the password to? Did the partner try to hide the message in any way? If the messages were found in place, like on their phone, and their phone doesn’t have a password then obviously that person knows that you are capable of looking at it any time. If they left their e-mail up on their personal computer, that you have access to, again they know you are able to look through their messages anytime. If they didn’t go out of their way to try and hide the message, then they probably didn’t mean the message in the way that you’re taking it. Were you purposely looking for these type of messages or did you accidently find it? If you were purposely looking for these types of message, why were

18

June 19th, 2013 - July 2nd, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

you snooping? This goes back to the first question. If you feel the need to check-up on your partner, then there is no trust in the relationship. If there is no trust in the relationship then you don’t have a relationship. On the other hand, could you be doing something that you shouldn’t be and now you’re worried that they might be too? Many times the person doing the cheating will accuse the innocent party of cheating to take the focus off of themselves. If you do decide to ask about the message, how did the other party react? Did they get defensive and start asking why you were going through their personal stuff or did they act like you were silly for even having those thoughts? If they get defensive, there might be other things going on. Talk to them and find out. If they look at you like you’re crazy and your imaging things then you probably are. A guilty person usually gets defensive and will try to turn everything back on you—‘Why are you going through my stuff?’—Whereas an innocent person will realized how the message could have been taken the wrong way, apologize and then reassure you that you’re the only one for them—‘I’m sorry babe, this is how the message was meant…I love you and I’m sorry your feelings were hurt.’ How would you want them to act if the roles were reversed? Stop and think if you’re ever sent a message to a friend of the opposite sex that could have been taken the wrong way. Would you want them to cause an uproar over it? The answer is probably no, so do you really need to be causing one? Platonic relationships between men and women do exists, and I can be the first to vouch for this considering I’ve only had 4 real relationships in my life and had more male friends than I can count compared to my female friends. Sometimes we do let jealousy get the better of us, but before you question a message between your partner and one of their opposite sexed friends, take a step back and evaluate the entire situation. Are you truly over reacting or do you have valid reasons to be upset? Only you can make that decision for yourself. By: Amanda

Image Home Improvement Live! Tips for Building an Addition on Your Home! BY Steve Deubel Room additions are a great solution for providing additional living space to your home. Room additions are a great alternative to selling & buying a new home. Room additions also offer the opportunity to be creative and to customize future living space. For example, you can elect to add a family room addition or bedroom, bump out your kitchen, or even build a garage addition with overhead living space. The advantage of adding a room addition, you can aesthetically determine where the room addition ties into the existing home. This also allows you to select all of the exterior and interior finished materials. Room additions are like building an entirely new home, especially if the room addition includes a

kitchen and/or bathroom. Image Home Improvement, Inc. can assist you with all phases of the addition. First we start with a set of buildable room addition plans, pull building permits. There is no doubt that a room addition to your home will be a little disruptive to the occupants of the home. Careful planning will keep this down to a minimum. Make sure you exhaust all other options first before moving forward with your addition plans. It is always a good idea to consult a realtor or appraiser to make sure you are not overbuilding in your neighborhood if you care about resale value when it comes time to sell. For all your home improvement needs listen to Image Home Improvement Live! 8-9am every Saturday morning with Steve Deubel on the Doublewide Network! www. doublewidenetwork.com & www. imagehomeimprovement.com

New Homes Once Again Shine in Phoenix

Very few saw when the “bottom” finally occurred but the large, national builders did. In late 2010, they began to re-purchase long forgotten finished lots and by 2011; the large graders and excavation equipment were pulled from their hibernation to once again sculpt the land where they believed people would buy.

NO GIMMICKS, JUST AN HONEST GLASS COMPANY PROVIDING QUALITY WORK.

30

While there were booms and busts, nothing could compare to the devastation of 2007 through 2011. Builder model homes sat idle, finished lots became overgrown with weeds and new home sales slowed to 5% of their peak sales velocity.

Since the late 1980’s, Phoenix has been a Mecca for National New Home Builders. Affordability, low property taxes and 300 annual days of sunshine have drawn many to relocate to The Valley of the Sun. June 19th, 2013 - July 2nd, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

By early 2013, the inventory of existing homes for sale was well below average due to high demand and the low cost to borrow. Simultaneously, the amount of new home subdivisions was rising rapidly. Phoenix area home buyers were once again experiencing that “new home smell”.

On May 8th, 2013, The Brand New Home Show made its debut on the Doublewide Network (www. doublewidenetwork.com) to promote newly constructed home ownership and to assist people as they research the purchase of a brand new home in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Presented by Ventana Fine Properties, The Brand New Home Show (www.brandnewhomeshow. com) is a weekly information and entertainment show dedicated to New Home awareness and consumer advocacy.

Tune into the Brand New Home Show on the Doublewide Network Wednesdays at 4:30pm and on demand 24/7 to hear about new homes in your area and how to protect yourself in the process.

Dixie Fried Chicken Wings w/Gravy - Southern buttermilk seasoned batter. A house specialty that must be tried.

Clever, Unique and Tasty! If you live in Chandler, you’re lucky Bourbon Jacks is close to you. If you live elsewhere, it’s worth the drive to check out this fantastic “Urban Country” restaurant located at 11 West Boston Street in the heart of downtown Chandler. The restaurant is a twist of southern style cuisine assembled from coast to coast and is certainly unique among restaurants in the city. As you delve into the various dishes served at Bourbon Jacks you will find that a great effort has been made to go outside the box and create truly different tastes and combinations. The unique, southern comfort food menu was create by Jason Williams and Billy Sims, who worked for months perfecting the items you see today. All the dry rubs, seasonings, dressings and sauces are created from scratch recipes inhouse daily. The menu is diverse and should be able to please most with items such as Baby Back Ribs, Mason Dixon Fried Chicken, Rib Eye steaks, several great burgers, Sonoran Pulled Pork, “Fried” chicken wings (must try!), Ahi Tuna salad and other salads, apps and totally unique side dishes. Some of the secret recipes are actually made with a little bourbon as you might expect adding to to the unique mystique of the eatery. Our tasty tour consisted of a great sampling of some of Bourbon Jacks signature dishes seen in the pictures here. Other notable items to try include the Dixie Stixs, fries with a great herb garlic seasoning, Deviled Potato Salad, which carries a nice spicy kick and the City Slicker Chicken Chili, homemade with a variety of beans, peppers and a bold spicy flavor that is not overbearing.

Turkey Pastrami Rueben Made with Turkey Pastrami for a great new taste making this sandwich the #1 most ordered item. Served on a pretzel bun with Sriracha slaw.

Jack’s Baby Back Ribs - Slow-cooked for hours (dinner item) and extremely tender! Try it with the Mac & Cheese, 4-cheese blend on the side. Excellent.

Drinks Anyone?

Happy Hour at Jacks is pretty darned generous with about 41 hours a week of happy hour! Catch all the drink specials Mon-Fri, 2-7pm and again with reverse happy hour Sun-Wed from 9pm to close. House specialties include the Moscow Mule, Dark & Stormy and the Bulleit Over Broadway along with a fine selection of beers including San Tan’s Mr. Pineapple and others.

TRAPPIST BREWERIES We live in a country where many of the early commercial brewers were Lager brewers. Lager styles were more profitable than the English ales that early settlers had been drinking and Lagers were preferred due to their longevity. The lager brewed by these commercial brewers was originally based on several different styles of central Europe, but eventually the Pilsner style became the favorite. With its mild Czech or German hops, pale, lightly roasted

barley, and its ability to include adjuncts such as rice and corn, it was the clear cut winner. So, it is only natural that we have come to enjoy Lager beers. For many of us Lager styles are the first beers we ever tried, likely snuck out of our parents’ refrigerator when they were not around. For that reason, Lagers are the “comfort food” of beer in the United States In Pennsylvania, Yuengling Lager is ubiquitous, which has created a

beer landscape unlike any other in the country. If you walk into any bar, especially in the eastern part of the state and call out “Lager!” you will have a cold amber glass of Yuengling in under a minute, no questions asked…except maybe “Draft or bottle?” In Arizona we do not have that locally produced Lager that everybody knows, but we do have the Mexican Lagers, Corona, Dos Equis, Modelo and more.

June 19th, 2013 - July 2nd, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

We enjoy our Heineken and Pilsner Urquell and the rest of the European Lagers we get to drink. We have yet to embrace much in the way of the Canadian or Japanese Lagers, but that is okay. Granted, at one point A-1 Pilsner was THE Arizona beer, but the current rendition of that beer is not true to the original recipe, nor is it even a Lager. Regardless, in Arizona, we, as an overall

consumer base, drink Lagers. But you’d never know it if you asked most “alpha beer geeks.” They tend to dismiss lagers, largely because the mainstream brands they loudly disrespect are all lagers. Silly beer snobs. That’s like dismissing crisp baguettes and tangy sourdough because you think Wonder Bread is soft and bland. If it’s not an IPA, if it’s not wildly aromatic and stuffed with hops, it ain’t craft! Speak softly to these people, and hand them a glass of Grand Canyon Pilsner. The hop aroma will suck them in, the bright effervescence will excite them, and the clean malt body will have them reaching for another before they even realize it’s a…lager! Then switch them to an Oskar Blues Mama’s Little YellaPils. This Bohemian style pilsner tastes like it was brewed in the Czech Republic and the Saaz hops are there for all to smell…and taste. That’s when you can take a moment to remind them that lagers are harder to make than ales. As one lager brewer said, “Ales! I could teach a chimp to make ales. I brew lagers.” He was exaggerating, but…lagers are much less forgiving of errors, the cold-maturation takes three to four times as long as ales, and

lager’s straightforward and clean nature means that a brewer has nowhere to hide. All true, and it all adds up to lagers being more expensive to make. They need more care with their yeast strains (more lab equipment, more yeast cultures). Some lagers use a decoction mashing process (too involved to explain, but it takes more energy). The cold maturation means more energy for chilling the tanks, and the longer maturation time means brewers need to buy (and maintain, and plumb, and find space for) more tanks to put out the same amount of beer.

Distributed by Crescent Crown

But the hard part is that they can’t really charge more to cover those costs; the consumer doesn’t see them. Craft lager brewers are a stubborn lot who really do it more for love than money! Is it worth it? I absolutely believe so, and I believe in introducing people to great craft lagers all the time. Despite the notion that lagers are bland, or too simple, or not hoppy (that one just makes me laugh), there are lagers that can go toe-to-toe with ales. Let’s have a look. Do you have a hophead? Hello again beer peeps, today I’d like to take a moment to tell you about a new beer that I brewed with local home brew hero Andrew Bauman at Mudshark Brewing in Lake Havasu City. Yes I said Havasu City. Didn’t know there was a brewery there? Read On!

BEER! SECTION

RoadZoda, Arizona’s Newest Beer is #SUMMERIFIC!

The beer is called RoadZoda and is a crisp, very session-able American Wheat beer with fresh tangerine, mango, vanilla and cinnamon. Sound odd? Let me break it down for you, essentially it’s a Tangerine Horchata Wit. Getting clear now or even more bizarre? Trust me when I say it’s delicious. When I came up with the concept for this crazy beer, I immediately contacted Mudshark Brew Master Mitch who was on board minutes after hearing the idea. Then it was recipe time. After receiving the preliminary formula from Mitch, I sat down with Andrew to fine tune our brew. Being an Arizona summer beer, it had to be a citrus bomb - so fresh fruit, juicy New Zealand hops and a light easy malt bill were the order of the day. Andrew was stoked to move from his 5 gallon brew kit to a full 15 barrel brew house and spent the afternoon engorged in brewing technique. This man is a wealth of knowledge and know-how. His motto of the day? SIZE REALLY DOES MATTER! (Do you know Andrew?)

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

So in closing, the beer is called RoadZoda and is best described as a very session-able (low alcohol) Tangerine Horchata Wit. It is unfiltered, crisp and citrusy with a touch of spice on the finish. It will be available ON TAP in 2 short weeks at Hungry Monk, World of Beer, Ground Control, Whole Foods Chandler, Whole Foods Scottsdale, OHSO, 1702 and more. #Summerific! Cheers!

Local First Arizona plans to honor local businesses across the state by offering shoppers special deals and fun events Sunday, June 30, through Sunday, July 7. Independents Week, also known as “Indie Week,” is a nationwide campaign coordinated by the American Independent Business Alliance. Coinciding with Independence Day, Indie Week aims to educate consumers about the importance of supporting local businesses. “Independents Week is especially important in Arizona during the slow summer months for many of our local business owners,” says Kimber Lanning, director of Local First Arizona. “When we spend our dollars at local businesses, up to four times more money stays and circulates in the local economy, supporting local jobs, services and communities. Our hope is that consumers will learn about the value of supporting local businesses during Indie Week, and then continue to support our independent businesses far beyond our weeklong celebration.”

pledge to shop local throughout Indie Week. Those who pledge will be entered to win a staycation including a night stay at Noftsger Hill Inn Bed and Breakfast in Globe and a meal at A Step Back in Time Coffee & Deli in Stafford. Save! The Golden Coupon is your ticket to 20 percent savings from local Arizona businesses throughout Indie Week. Shoppers and diners can print out the coupon or load it to their smartphones and use it at any and all of the participating locations. Some businesses include: Pillsbury Wine Company, Urban Cookies, House of Tricks, Vino and Canvas, Sibley’s West and many more. For the second consecutive year, Talking Rock Ranch invites wine enthusiasts to the Talking Rock Ranch Wine Festival and Auction Saturday, June 29, from 3 to 8 p.m. The day’s festivities will include live entertainment and wine tastings with the events commemorative Talking Rock wine glass. Attendees may also choose to dine al Fresco and enjoy a grilled steak and fish buffet, available for purchase, while listening to the day’s live musical performance. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the silent auction will raise funds for other regional charities by collecting bids on an assortment of popular wine lots and packages.

“As a community, Talking Rock continues to be enthusiastic about wine education and supporting Arizona’s emerging wine industry,” says Chris Heinrich, food and beverage director at Talking Rock. “The wine festival and auction allows us to share this enthusiasm with Prescott and the rest of Arizona.” Tickets for the 2013 Talking Rock Ranch Wine Festival and Auction may be purchased in advance here. UFC 162 July 6th

If you’re a betting man or woman, it’s hard to mount a compelling argument against Chris Froome in this year’s Tour de France. Indeed, the 28-year-old Kenyan-born Brit enters this year’s 21-stage, 2,115-mile race through the French countryside as the odds-on favorite to make it two in a row for Great Britain after countryman and Team Sky teammate Bradley Wiggins won it in 2012. He’s coming in in top form, having recorded victories this year in four major stage races: the Tour of Oman, the Criterium International (Corsica), the Tour de Romandie (Switzerland) and the Criterium du Dauphine (Switzerland and France). And rather than kicking back at home in Monaco after his most recent win in June, he headed off to check out the Alpine climbs that will figure heavily in the Tour. After that, it was off to training camp in France.

DANNY ZELISKO PRESENTS

BY BRIAN PALMER

ALBUM REVIEWS Shannon Curtis Releases Gorgeous Cinemascope/Jenn Bostic Will Make Country Music World Jealous Shannon Curtis’s debut album is a keeper. Loaded with languid synths and breathy, ethereal vocals, this is downtempo dreampop lover’s delight. “Love is an Earthquake”’s waves of synths remain remarkably even and hypnotic throughout, while “Book of Fiction” uses sutble, gentle keys to augment her tale of a relationship that can never be. “Let’s Stay In”’s reliance on a beat machine and otherworldly synths make it a fun track, the percussion on “Dandelion Wishes,” makes it feel like more organic than the rest of the album’s tracks, and the beats on “So Many Stars” mirror a beating heart, which makes for a nice effect. Cinemascope combines Curtis’s sirenlike vocals with great emotional depth and a variety of lush sonic textures to create a head-turning debut that is worth checking out.

Nashville singer-songwriter Jenn Bostic’s debut album, Jealous, is about to make her a Country music star. The funky country strains of “Change,” upbeat country pop of “Anywhere But Here,” and driving piano ballad “Snowstorm” demonstrate her musical versatility, and lyrically she’s no slouch either. Her first single and ode to her deceased father, “Jealous of the Angels,” should require a three-Kleenexminimum warning label, while “Just One Day” is a similarly emotional, heart-on-your-sleeve country number that listeners will adore. The upbeat, danceable “Let’s Get Ahead of Ourselves” is a charming track about diving into love headfirst, displays Bostic’s fun side, and is a nice respite from the album’s generally serious tone. Bostic is a star-in-the-making in the Country world, and Jealous is Exhibit A.

Surviving a Traffic Stop Your awareness of some simple concepts may serve you well in the event you or a loved one is the unfortunate subject of a criminal investigation. First of all, always remember, you are not required to talk to the police.

In addition, talking to friends and family about your criminal matter is usually not a good idea either. Although you do not expect a friend or family member to compromise your case, you may put him or her in an unfair position. Such a dilemma will force your family member or friend to decide between perjury and possibly hurting your case. You are never required to consent to a search. If a police officer has a search warrant, you must permit the search. However, if a search warrant has not yet been obtained,

you should insist the officer obtain one before you voluntarily allow a search. The fact that you insist upon a search warrant does not mean you have something to hide. Rather, it is a confirmation of the constitutional concept that police do not have the right to arbitrarily conduct searches of your property. A police officer has no right to detain you unless there exists reasonable suspicion that you committed a crime or traffic violation. However, a police officer is always allowed to initiate a voluntary conversation with you. My advice, just shut up!
