7th. “We are looking at other ways to be good neighbors during this extreme heat. As a locally owned and operated company all of these years, we understand what the Tucson heat can be like.” Other added entertainment is being added to the agenda at no additional cost this summer. Characters SpongeBob SquarePants, Scooby Doo, Dora the Explorer, The first half of June this year has been the hottest on record. Steve Miklosi, General Manager of Breakers Water Park took notice of this, and has decided to do something to help Southern Arizonans escape the heat more economically than ever. “We didn’t hit the triple digits until June 1, right after we opened for the season. From there, it has been triple digits every single day! We decided to make it more affordable than ever for our customers and neighbors to cool off and escape this heat.” In an unprecedented move, Breakers Water Park decided to reduce the Park’s admission prices, so

Jimmy Neutron, Patrick from SpongeBob and Cosmo from Fairly Odd Parents are all slated for special weekend entertainment – all included with the admission price. A beach DJ and karaoke are also being added to the mix. “We want families to enjoy themselves and escape the summer heat with us – where it’s cool and fun – for a price they can afford.”

that all attendees will pay the children’s’ admission price of just $16.95 plus tax…for all ages. “It’s a huge savings – and will allow more families to cool off in the wave pool, experience the new Rock Slide as well as the adrenaline rush slides – and for the littlest ones to play in the water features at Cap’n Kids Surfari. It’s just too hot outside and we want all families to have the opportunity to come and cool off.”

,

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘White House Down’

‘100 Bloody Acres’

‘Dirty Wars’

‘Shadow Dancer’

Damon Herriman and Angus Sampson play brothers who, struggling to keep their organic blood and bone fertilizer business afloat, stumble upon three travelers stranded on a remote country road and cook up a radical solution to their supply problem. (NR - 91 minutes)

Filmmaker Rick Rowley follows investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill as he is pulled into an unexpected journey chasing down the hidden truth behind America’s expanding covert wars. (NR - 87 minutes)

Andrea Riseborough plays a single mother living in Belfast who is arrested for her part in an aborted IRA bomb plot in London and forced to become an informant for MI5 in order to protect her son’s welfare. Clive Owen and Gillian Anderson also star. (R - 96 minutes)

Joseph: Having been fertilized with a cornucopia of clever cracks, a couple of complex characters and an ounce of organic heart, “100 Bloody Acres” is a humorously homicidal movie.

Randy: “Featuring yourself in a doc is a pet peeve of mine for a filmmaker. Peeve achieved. Fascinating subject though despite its flaws.” Joseph: “The shocking nature of “Dirty Wars” combined with the sheer significance of its subject and the far-reaching motif of fighting for our right to knowledge make for a meritorious movie.”

Joseph: “Despite an initially intriguing premise and a complex performance from actress Andrea Riseborough, “Shadow Dancer” is a mundane and monotonous movie.”

Stan Robinson ~ 6 Years and Counting! June 2013 is the start of seven years of seeing movies and writing about them for AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine! My Executive Assistant, Cynthia Tracy, who has as one of her responsibilities of transcribing my interviews, came up with ‘Bet You Didn’t Know’ as it relates to my involvement! 6 years = 312 weeks of movies; watching on the average of 5 movies per week = 1,560 movies; with an average movie running time of 2 hours = 3,120 hours of viewing (not counting trailers that are also watched), and 91 interviews of which about three fourths are with producers, directors, and production persons!

14

Many thanks to AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine for the opportunity to continue my passion for the art of film after retiring from film production!

June 19th, 2013 - July 2nd, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Channing Tatum plays a Capitol policeman who, while on a tour of the White House with his young daughter, springs into action to save his child and protect the president (Jamie Foxx) from a heavily armed group of paramilitary invaders. (PG-13 - 137 minutes) Joseph: “Only five words are needed to review “White House Down” - “Olympus Has Fallen” was better. It was more explosive, it was more exciting and it did not star Joey King.”

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Director Rick Rowley (‘Dirty Wars’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“We are not political pundits. We are not politicians. We do not have a partisan ax to grind. We do not have a 12-point program for reforming America’s war overseas. We just know that there are dozens of wars being fought in our name but without our knowledge. These wars have been fought in the shadows with very little public knowledge and essentially no congressional oversight for over a decade. “The purpose of the film is to take this war out of the shadows and into the light so the American people can begin to have a national discussion about what kind

of country we want to be and how this war is going to be fought in the future. It was a harrowing 3 years. There was a moment in Somalia when Jeremy and I felt totally pointless and empty. “The thing that brought us through was the trust that all the families we had filmed that had put in us. When we began knocking on doors of houses in Afghanistan, we were the first Americans these people had seen since American soldiers kicked their doors in and killed their families. They invited us in and shared their painful stories with us because they deeply believed in the power

of their stories. “They thought that if their stories could be shared with the American people that it would matter, that it would be significant in some way. They trusted us - two military-aged men from the same country as the soldiers who had come into their homes - with their stories and trusted us to do everything in our power to bring their stories home. So we had to - no matter how hopeless and empty we felt at those low moments. We had to bring their stories home.” – Rick Rowley

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

Filmmakers Cameron and Colin Cairnes (‘100 Bloody Acres’) By Joseph J. Airdo “We are big genre fans. We love horror films. In fact, when we started working on this project, we had hoped that it would be this really hardcore, intense horror film. But, along the process, jokes started to find their way into the script. While we love horror films, we also love great entertainment. “So we just set out to make a really entertaining film. It has certainly got a lot of horror elements but we kind of fell in love with these characters. And I guess that our sense of humor found its way into the fabric of the film. It is really just about taking people on a ride and, at the same time, exploring all of these dysfunctional relationships that we developed in the story.” – Colin Cairnes “One of our original taglines was, ‘Relationships can be bloody hard work.’ I think that it is essentially a relationship movie and - despite all of the horror, ugliness and gore - I think that the film has a lot of heart and explores familial dysfunction,

which we know all too well.” – Cameron Cairnes “I think that Cameron is right. When you finish a film, you sit back and think, ‘There are some layers to this and there might be some deeper meaning to it.’ Relationships do take a lot of work and constant vigilance. And, I do not want to sound pretentious, but I think that it also explores the human condition. “We all - or most of us anyway - are basically trying to get through life doing the right thing. But sometimes - whether you running a business, trying to get ahead in some field or trying to forge a relationship - you have to make some compromises or make not necessarily the most moral decisions. But, ultimately, you are just trying to do the right thing.” – Colin Cairnes

In addition to picnicking, camping, & hiking in the Coronado National Forest, you can travel to outer space by visiting the Sky Center at the summit. • This past weekend, we ventured up to Mt. Graham (elevation 10, 720) and the alpine forest atop the Pinaleño Mountains, about a 3-hour drive east of Tucson. Here you will find some of the best campgrounds & picnic areas in all of Southern Arizona. We enjoyed a picnic at Riggs Flat Lake. While it was 104 in Tucson, it was a delightful 65 degrees lakeside. The air was fresh with the scent of pine and fir and spruce. If you intend to camp up there for a few days this time of year, you need to arrive early in the week. Otherwise all the campsites will be taken. If you subscribe to my SouthernArizonaGuide. com, you will have already received my weekly email newsletter with my slideshow of our adventure. Otherwise you can view it by going to Main Menu > Adventures > Camps & RV Parks. The road up the mountain is one of the narrowest, windiest, and most beautiful drives in all of Arizona. However, there are zero services on the mountain.

HOT SUMMER / COOL PLACES

In total, the program is about 4 hours long, including lecture with amazing astrophotography, dinner, and taking turns observing planets, stars, and galaxies through the 32-inch telescope. We took our teenage grandsons and they really enjoyed the experience. You will too. There are two good restaurants on Mt. Lemmon. Sawmill Run is in the Village of Summerhaven. The Iron Door Restaurant is 2 miles further and across the highway from Ski Valley, the southern-most ski area in the U.S. You can ride the ski lift to the rim for a panoramic view of metropolitan Tucson. Note: take a jacket. Photographs by Adam Brock: Horse Head Nebula; IC 4678.
