Bye Bye Birdie! A Fun and Innocent Hit Returns! At Arizona Broadway Theatre By Nicholas Connell

It takes a special director and a special cast to pull off a revival of a hit musical from our timeless musical history. But that is just what Arizona Broadway Theatre in Peoria has done with its current production of Bye Bye Birdie- in splendid fashion! Director Robert Colby Harper took this innocent cast and molded them into a dynamic expression of comedy and characters right out of Midwest America! His direction was fun and exciting with a talented cast of actors as sweet as Iowa apples. All good comedy/musicals have that leading lady who help us fall in love again with the innocence of days gone by. That lady came in the sweet bouquet of Erin O’Neil as Rose Alvarez. Erin was a perfect fit as the loyal and lovely Rose who never quite gives up on her music man, Albert Peterson, played nervously and delightfully by Michael La Masa.

June 25th - July 1st, 2009

These two were the match made in heaven during the wild ride created by a Mr. Conrad Birdie, our rockstar legend played to perfection by Justin Justras. Justin was the show of shows for the teens to swoon over during this tv explosion. His teen of choice for one last kiss before entering the service came out in shining fashion, as Chelsea Cree Groen, playing his promotional side kick Kim MacAfee, let everyone know she was ready to be his girl. Throw in a exuberant chorus of teens, adults, boyfriends, girlfriends, moms, and a mayor, and you get a Bye Bye Birdie full of fun and wonder! There’s also plenty of music to tap along to as the ABT band was in top form playing the hits ‘Put on a Happy Face”, “How Lovely to be a Woman”, ‘One Boy”, ‘A Healthy,Normal, American Boy”, “One Last Kiss”, ‘What Did I Ever See In Him”, “A Lot of Livin to Do”, “Kids”, “Baby Talk To Me”, “Spanish Rose” and the finale “Rosie”. Get out to Arizona Broadway Theatre and enjoy the magic of “Bye Bye Birdie” again. The production will leave you smiling, laughing and clappin for more!

Director M.Seth Raines hands were full of talent to direct in this cast of Wildcats from East High. He kept the story fresh and believable while keeping the energy flowing from clique to clique. But High School Musical is really about a love story, similar to a kindergarten crush, only better! Led by our Romeo-jock hero Troy Bolton, played with passion by Nic Bryan; the student body is watching every move Troy puts on his young JulietGabriella Montez, our shy new girl at school, played charmingly by Virginia Cavaliere. These two fall for each other

faster than a three point play in “What I’ve Been Looking For”, “I Cant Take My Eyes Off of You” and “Start of Something New”. The chemistry of these love birds was hot until the final kiss! Also playing the high school popularity game to the hilt in mean and dramatic fashion are Ashley Stults, as Sharpay Evans, and Brad Boman, as her brother Ryan Evans. These two were unstoppable as the thespian leaders in “Auditions”, “What I’ve Been Looking For” and “Bop To The Top”. If ever a brother-sister combination was cast to capture the angst of the day, they were the bomb! Also adding spice to a cast of characters only Disney could franchise, are Erich DiCenzo as the PA announcer, Stacie Johnson as Ms.Darbus, Rob Watson as Coach Bolton, Megan Kip as Kelsi Neilson our composer, Andy Geary as James the earthworm expressionist, and a rowdy group of Cheerleaders and students who kept the music bright and uplifting while delivering the true message of East High in “Breaking Free” and “We’re All In This Together”. This show is a winner the whole family can enjoy. Get your school spirit and head over to the Palm for an evening full of energy and good cheer! For tickets call 480-325-6700 or go online at BroadwayPalmWest.com.

present by Fiddler’s Dream Coffeehouse Ongoing Thursday’s 7:30pm For over twelve years, Fiddler’s Dream has been the place to be for acoustic musicians that want to share songs in a completely acoustic environment. No mics, no sound system, no electric instruments except a nice electric Yamaha piano. Doors open about 6:15pm, and musicians who want to play will put their names in the hat. Names are drawn at random beginning at 7:30pm. There is enough time for about 20 performers, at eight minutes or two songs each.

the social realities of the period that are the backdrop for his films. His notable movies on my list include Dirty Pretty Things (2002) a harrowing view of London’s underside; Mrs. Henderson Presents (2005) took us back to the past and how the theatre district of London was a stabilizing force during the air-raids of London during World War II; and The Queen (2006) presented the behind the scenes view as Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister Tony Blair coupe with the death of Princess Diana. In an interview I had with Stephen Frears for Mrs. Henderson Presents, he said that “It’s the essence of a story and the influential circumstances of the time-frame it takes place, is the greatest appeal for me. To capture the very essence of life at that time is the challenge!” This story is a romantic drama set in the roaring 1920’s of Paris. Michelle Pfeiffer stars as a beautiful Parisian courtesan, who takes a naïve young man (Rupert Friend) half her age, into her boudoir to teach him a thing or two about women! Being the good student that he is, he learns all too well and turns out to be her perfect match. He doesn’t want to grow up and she doesn’t want to grow old and together they defy all of society’s rules. Their affair is pure pleasure, until the one thing that neither counted on which could turn into a salacious scandal, they fall in love. And, gradually they each come to see there will be weighty consequences of this unusual affair! Starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathy Bates, Rupert Friend, Felicity Jones, and Frances Tomelty. Directed by Stephen Frears; written by Christopher Hampton; Miramax Films release; Rated R for some sexual content and brief drug use; Runtime: 100s minutes.

“My Sister’s Keeper”, a story of courage! Sara (Cameron Diaz) and Brian (Jason Patric) are living an idyllic life with their young son and daughter, Jesse (Evan Ellingson) and Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), when they receive heartbreaking news that leads them to make an unorthodox choice in order to save leukemia-stricken Kate’s life. Their decision eventually raises both ethical and moral questions, ultimately setting off a court case that reveals surprising truths and challenges everyone’s perceptions of love and loyalty, giving new meaning to the definition of healing. Caught in the middle of the circumstances is Anna (Abigail Breslin) with the hope of medical emancipation from her parents who until now have relied on her help to keep Kate alive. It’s the strong, veteran ensemble cast that brings poignancy to the story. And Abigail Breslin, who has consistently delivered interesting character portrayals at such a young age, gives a performance that tugs at your heart. Her recent projects include: Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (2008), Nim’s Island (2008), and Definitely, Maybe (2008). Starring Abigail Breslin, Walter Raney, Sofia Vassilieva, Cameron Diaz, Heather Wahlquist, Jason Patric, Evan Ellingson, and Alec Baldwin. Directed by Nick Cassavetes; written by Jeremy Leven & Nick Cassavetes; New Line Cinema release; Rated PG-13 for mature thematic content, some disturbing images, sensuality, language and brief teen drinking; Runtime: 109 minutes.

This edition’s foreign film entry is the story of Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, who has been elected to Parliament seven times since it was established in 1946. In Rome, at dawn, when everyone is sleeping, Giulio Andreotti is awake. He’s awake because his schedule is full. Approaching seventy, Andreotti is unwavering and not easily intimidated, having survived unscathed from everything including electoral battles, terrorist massacres, and slanderous accusations. He is untouched by it all until the strongest counter power in Italy declares war on him, the Mafia. Presented in the docu-drama style. IL Divo gives a look at the history and the man who was the guiding force shaping the Italian government’s path to become what it is today. IL Divo is presented in Italian with English subtitles.

Transforming Technology for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen By Randy Montgomery Scott Farrar has been creating ground breaking visual effects which have taken filmmaking and the movie going experience to a whole new level for decades. Farrar’s career began in 1979 when he worked on Star Trek: The Motion Picture. For the past 28 years, Farrar has been with George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic in Northern California. Farrar has been an Academy Award nominee for films such as Backdraft (1991) and Transformers (2007), and won an Oscar for Cocoon in 1986. Farrar reprises the Visual Effects Supervisor credit for director Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The visual effects supervisor’s role differs from those working on special effects and stunts. Farrar explains, “If I have a robot running through the scene banging into a car, knocking it out of the way, grabbing a tree, pulling it out of the ground and destroying it, and at the same time shots are being fired at him, the physical (special effects) guy can put a wire wrap on the car, flip the car, and put all the hits on the ground. But if the robot is going to grab the tree, it will be a CG tree. I will build the robot and the tree. The things that aren’t there at the time of principal photography, that’s the dividing line. I put in all the things after the fact. Along side with that, the stunt coordinator is providing stunt people and interactive stuff as well. I need all of those physical effects to help me to make it look more real and visible. Without that collaboration you cannot do a picture this complicated.”

8

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is poised to be the biggest film of the summer in terms of audience and box office receipts, but it has already managed to be the biggest film ever created by Farrar and his team at Industrial Light and Magic. Rendering robots large enough to fit an IMAX format requires an unthinkable amount of computer memory and disk space, plus sophisticated software June 25th - July 1st, 2009

and hardware. “If you were to render this movie on a normal or a high-end PC, it would take 16,000 years,” says Farrar. The “Devastator” character was so big and made of so many thousands of pieces, to be able be put into IMAX format, made him eight times larger, with eight times the memory than a normal Panavision film frame. Another fact Farrar adds, “If you took all of Devastator’s parts (if they were real) and laid them out across the ground one by one, it would stretch across the state of California over and back.” “We are doing things that have never been done before,” says Farrar, “We shot the entire movie with virtually no green or blue screen. Everything is tracked after the fact. If a robot goes in behind the actors, every bit of it is rotoed by pretty sophisticated artists using precise tools to make it believable.” One of the most challenging characters for the artists to create was “The Fallen,” who has an Egyptian and beast-like design. “He had to look mean, but still express himself. It was tough to get all the parts to show and read to the camera so the audience would understand what he was doing or saying.” One of the favorite characters to work on for Farrar was Bumblebee. “I’ve always called him ‘our little Charlie Chaplin.’ He has to express himself mostly through facial movement and gestures. He can’t speak, much like a silent film star. He was our breakthrough character regarding body and facial expressions in the first Transformers. We went a little further on this one. He’s a real rewarding character to work with.” AZWeeklyMagazine.com

While the effects are cutting edge, the attention to detail will also set this Transformers sequel apart from other films. While Farrar doesn’t drive to work looking at the car next to him envisioning robots, he looks more at the details. Those details are a part of what makes Revenge of the Fallen unlike anything you will see on the screen. “What most of us (that worked on the film) do every day is look at the way cars reflect. That is what every robot does, they reflect the environment. We had a guy with a still camera who would

take a photograph, spin in a circle and photograph the environment. That would be reflected into the car or the character. Looking at how complicated reflections are, that’s what I look at.” With the release date finally here, Farrar feels a sense of relief. “It has been a lot of work, but if it gives people pleasure and they enjoy the film, that’s why we do what we do. We want to provide something that is entertaining and something they have never seen before.”

some oak. When wine brings butter to the table it didn’t come from a barrel.

If my e-mail is anything to go by the buttery flavor and aroma in wine (Chardonnay in particular) has been on the collective mind. Questions have ranged from; how does it get there to, can it be there with out the influence of wood? It looks like this is a subject worthy of elaborating so that you can better understand what you are tasting and drinking.

If you’d like to get a clearer picture try a side by side comparative tasting; use one wine aged in oak with out going through malo-lactic and one that sees no oak but goes through malo-lactic fermentation. Here are my suggestions ZD California Chardonnay, as the oaked wine and Lioco Sonoma County Chardonnay as the un-oaked malo-lactic representative. These wines are as stylistically different as they are fantastic.

By Nathan Mears

First things first the buttery flavor and aroma has nothing to do with wood. While it may work well with the influences of wood and be often intertwined in our mind they are not actually connected. The buttery flavors come from a compound called diacetyl. Diacetyl and Acetoin are the compounds responsible for giving butter its glorious flavor. So how does this flavor end up in your wine? Do they add a few sticks of butter or maybe just a pat? I will try to keep this as easy to digest as possible, if you’d like to elaborate on one particular piece let me know. Diacetyl is a bi-product of the process called Malo-Lactic fermentation. Malo-lactic fermentation is a bacterial fermentation that converts wines naturally occurring malic acid into lactic acid. This process is one way to smooth out some of the rough edges and creates a rich smooth mouth feel. So the next time you pick up a glass of chardonnay think about what you smell. Is it burnt toast & vanilla or butter, butterscotch & buttered popcorn; maybe it’s all of the above? If it’s toast and vanilla, then your wine has made friends with

What Could Be More Intriguing than Chocolate? For hundreds of years, chocolate has captured the imaginations and taste buds of people around the world. It is known that chocolate began with Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America. The Spanish brought chocolate back home and kept it a secret for many years until stolen from the Spanish and popularized throughout Europe during the 16th and 17th century. The history of chocolate is in many ways the history of the Americas. from the Aztecs of Mexico and is native. History of chocolate records that the first use of chocolate was drunk, not eaten, and the earliest people to discover the health benefits of chocolate were the Maya.

Needless to say it is widely loved. The history of chocolate is bittersweet, as for hundreds of years it has been a temptation to the lovers of sweets for a very long time. So whether a quick mid-day snack or the perfect postmeal dessert, flex your sweet-craving “status” at the dinner table and give those taste buds what they have craved for hundreds of years.

Pacific Dunes The track is perched one hundred feet above an untrammeled Pacific coast beach, and hewn from giant sand dunes and thick fields of gorse, transplanted from Scotland. Though links-like in appearance, Pacific Dunes is much more than meets the eye. Bethpage Black One of five courses at Bethpage State Park, the Black’s narrow fairways, high rough, strategically placed bunkers and small greens all combine to make it a incredibly daunting experience. No water hazards, just really good contouring. And that’s enough.

Pebble Beach Thanks to years of televised final round coverage of the AT&T Pro-Am and a smattering of U.S. Open Championships - not to mention countless coffee table tomes - the links of Pebble Beach are indelibly stamped on the collective golf consciousness. The stretch from four through ten and then sixteen through eighteen are amazing. One seldom gets a chance to play golf in that kind of setting. Pinehurst #2 No lesser authority than Bobby Jones called the Pinehurst Resort “the St. Andrews of America,” and #2 is Pinehurst’s crowning glory. The sand hills area of North Carolina purportedly reminded Donald Ross of his Scottish home. Though he would design over four hundred courses in his lifetime, Pinehurst was his first love. TPC Sawgrass TPC Sawgrass near Jacksonville, Florida was the first course built to accommodate spectators. You think of Sawgrass, you think of the seventeenth (island) hole. Everyone wants a shot at it. TPC is of great architectural significance. It’s a very man-made environment, and started a whole new design trend.

Harbour Town Another Pete Dye Classic, Harbour Town is the course that made Hilton Head Island a golf mecca. Mr. Dye took a flat site and made a course that is full of interest, by leaving great old live oaks in strategic spots, by creating interesting bunkers and hazard edges, and by giving the course a set of tiny greens that demand precise iron play. Harbour Town proved that resort golfers prefer interesting features to long and challenging courses ... a lesson that many have taken to heart. Whistling Straits (Straits Course) Step to the tee at the Straits course and you may think that you’ve arrived at a storied links course on the west coast of Ireland. Unfolding along the shores of Lake Michigan in Kohler, Wisconsin, Pete’s Dye’s Whistling Straits is a truly “dyeabolical” layout, with upwards of five hundred bunkers. It’s become an instant classic, having already hosted the 2004 PGA Championship, and is slated to host the U.S. Senior Open in 2007. Broadmoor (East) The opulent Broadmoor Resort rests at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado Springs, and is celebrated for its three tracks - especially the East course, designed by Donald Ross in 1918.

Broadmoor East offers sweeping views of the Rockies. It’s a treat to play with its mix of holes, and will be even better when it is restored to its original Donald Ross vintage. Wildhorse Situated in Nebraska’s Sand Hills region, Wildhorse mirrors the wild, dune-ridden links land of the Scottish coast - without the ocean. Wildhorse rivals the quality of the courses at Bandon Dunes, though on a somewhat smaller scale. It’s a pure dunes land experience.

Black Mesa Golf Club Black Mesa rests on a rugged piece of land north of Santa Fe. The course features the kind of scenery you might find in an old western movie. It’s a difficult test of golf for good players, but everyone will enjoy the fact that they’ve kept it affordable and accessible. Quite possibly the best course in New Mexico.

HAPPY GIVEMORE COMEDY SERIES PARTNERS WITH TIM & WILLY Veteran Valley Radio Celebrities to Host Three Shows at W Hotel Scottsdale

The creators of the Happy Givemore Comedy Series—a collection of monthly shows that benefit children’s charities—have just announced a special collaboration with KMLE radio deejays Tim Hattrick and Willy D. Loon to host shows this weekend at the W Hotel Scottsdale. “We are absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Tim and Willy on such a meaningful project,” said Dallen Gietz, co-founder of the Happy Givemore Foundation. “Their support and their huge following in the Valley will enable us to help share our passion for helping children through laughter with thousands of people who may not have otherwise heard about what we’re doing.” Scheduled June 26 and 27, the comedy performances will benefit Tim and Willy’s “Kids FUN-Dation,” a publicly supported foundation committed to improving the quality of life for under-privileged children in Arizona.

To date, the organization has donated more than $500,000 to charities including The Neighborhood Center, Rosie’s House, Back to School Clothing Drive Association, Florence Crittenton Foundation, a Hand of Hope and many more. In addition to the “Kids FUN-dation,” Phoenix Children’s Hospital will be a beneficiary of Happy Givemore’s June comedy shows. Guests are encouraged to donate DVDs, toddler toys (preferably ones that light up, play music and make noise) or gift cards (Target, Wal-Mart) in exchange for a $5 discount on their ticket price. Members of the public may also donate these greatly needed items by dropping them off at the W Hotel Scottsdale’s front desk. Also embracing the adage that “laughter is the best medicine” is W Hotel server Natalie Karmo who founded “Servers who Serve” as a way of giving back to the community. Having already raised in excess of $3,000 to help local underprivileged kids, the waitresses, bartenders, barbacks and others participating in “Servers who Serve” will make a donation to Tim and Willy’s “Kids FUN-dation.” Said Karmo, “I was so encouraged that we were able to raise so much—from each person just donating a little of their tips, we were able to make a difference in so many children’s lives.” Headlining the June shows is Mark Eddie, the Los Angeles-based comic/singer/songwriter renowned for his rapid-fire rock references and

at $25 online and $35 day of; $75 for VIP admission which includes a cocktail reception and preferred seating. The monthly series will continue on a monthly basis through January. and Ron Babcock will also perform. Between now and June 30th, MyStudio, is holding an amateur comedy contest, and the winner will kick off each of the three shows. A Happy Givemore partner, MyStudio will also hand out a $20 gift card for each guest to be used toward making their own 5-minute video at the MyStudio video kiosk at Scottsdale Fashion Square. For more information on the amateur contest go to mystudio.net, or call 888-HGLAFF1 or (888) 445-2331.

The Happy Givemore Comedy Series was founded by Dallen Gietz and Heather Williams, who spent almost 12 years with the Tempe Improv developed a good sense of what Valley audiences really like. She says she looks for “up and comers who are super funny but can hold their own in a semi-clean environment. After all, this is for charity.” Shows are scheduled for Friday, June 26 (8 p.m.) and Saturday, June 27 (8 p.m.). General Admission prices

Beginning June 28, 2009, Barcelona North Scottsdale plans to begin the largest phase of their renovation. Doors will reopen with a concept change and major facility remodel in approximately 90 days. What up homies? We’ve got LOTS of good stuff for you to check out this week so get your finest outfits ready for all that’s going on in the hot and sweaty PHX. For all that happened, is happening and will happen read on, read on. Also, are you following us on Twitter yet? @bdiggs and @ MyFeMy Summer Splash Birthday Bash: When you’re one of the in-demand Valley promoters what do you do to celebrate your birthday? Throw an exclusive party and invite hundreds of friends. Raven Valdes, owner of Raven Events, LLC and the self-proclaimed “Party Priestess” is having a Luau themed birthday bash Friday, June 26 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. and is inviting 600 of her closest friends to attend. Held at the Clarion Hotel Scottsdale, and with all event proceeds benefiting the Valley non-profit Community Dental Foundation, guests of the event will have the entire hotel to themselves and can look forward to cabanas, cocktails, wine and margarita bars, $7 specialty menu items, a casino area, live music from Arizona’s own reggae legend Walt Richardson, and Polynesian performers. The hotel is even offering event guests a specialty late check-out room package for $61. Event tickets are $25 online, $35 at the door and are limited, so hurry and get your tickets at, www.ravenevents.com. Chickenfoot: Do you like chickenfoot? No, I’m not talking about one of those dishes from New Orleans where you don’t know what’s in the stew; I’m talking about the “superband.” The band members are guitar-god Joe Satriani, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith, Van Halen front man Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony. Hagar has called them the next Led Zeppelin but that is doomed to prove false no matter how good they are. Actually, their music isn’t that bad, but what do you expect, they are a supergroup, right? More likely than not, they’ll sell out some shows have a couple of good songs, break up and call it “a project.” Speaking of shows, the whole reason I’m telling you about Chickenfoot is because they are coming to the the Dodge Theatre on September 23rd, but tickets started selling a couple of days ago. Check em out and let us know what you think of their music--chickenfoot.us.

City” designation this past Monday, June 22. Councilman Michael Johnson (Phoenix District 8) honored the rapper in an evening ceremony, which proved to be a first for the city. Not only a talented rapper, Willy, donates his time talking to and performing for Phoenix children, and is a regular at charitable functions aimed at giving back to his community. “Hood Dreamer,” his first single off of his debut album, “Tha Connect,” shares his story of his struggles of growing up in a part of Phoenix that wasn’t all sparking pools and golf courses. To learn more about Willy and where to get his album visit, www.myspace.com/willynorthpole. Joan Rivers Day: Speaking of people being honored by the city, June 28th has been proclaimed “Joan Rivers” day by Mayor Phil Gordon. He just lost my vote…In reality, he did this because she is doing a comedy show to benefit Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS. It will be at Gila River Casino’s Wild Horse Pass on June 28th and tickets are $45, $60 and $80. I heard she is pretty funny, but the reason we include this is because we always like to promote good causes that have some entertainment. For more info visit ProTixOnline.com. Drink Recipes!: You know we like our cocktails and we wanted to share a couple more summer drink recipes with you. When you make them, be sure to invite us over and be sure to limit us to three or some CRAZY things can happen! Oh, these two recipes are featured this month at Tommy Bahama at Kierland Commons if you need to, you know, do a little “research” before you make them. Summer Press (June feature): Try this light, sweet, treat. 2.5 parts rum 1.75 parts lemon-lime soda 1.75 parts soda water ½ lime freshly squeezed Mix all parts over ice. Peechy Keen (July feature): This one is a “tropic” wonder and ladies delight. 1 part rum 1.5 parts peach schnapps .5 parts passion fruit juice 1 part mango juice 1 part orange juice Put ingredients into shaker with ice and shake “twenty times” and then strain into martini glass. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

With the emphasis on today’s economy, many people have become more likely to stay at home - and parties are becoming the latest fashion. It is simple to throw a successful party that does not cost you large amounts of money. Follow the steps below and you are on your way to a successful party that is plenty fabulous, fun and cost efficient. A THEME: Of course you may not always need a theme. However,

FOOD: Food can be a big expense when throwing a party. Everyone wants to have good food, so you don’t just want to buy cheaply. Once you have come up with your theme, write it down and have everyone bring something to the party. Whether it is drinks and ice or something for dessert, everyone pitching in will keep the costs way down. Also, if you are someone who doesn’t like to ask for help, then consider throwing a recipe party, where everyone brings something for everyone to try and also brings copies of the recipe to share with others. In the end, everyone leaves full, having had a good time, and with a whole bunch of new recipes to go home and create.

games that are theme appropriate and find a way to do them cheaply. Include some music from your stereo, computer, tv or iPod and everyone will have a great time. No matter the party theme, entertainment doesn’t have to cost you a fortune.

throwing a good party on a budget with a theme is an absolute essential. This can allow you to research some cheap party throwing and decorating ideas online. You will be surprised at how many cute, really cheap party ideas there are right now on the web. Whether you are throwing a kids birthday party or a murder mystery party, you will be surprised at the things you can do for just a few dollars.

With everyone feeling the pressure of today’s economy, there’s always an efficient way to get your friends together and have a fun time. Just be a little creative and don’t be afraid to try going the bargain route, both during the party and the day after you’ll be glad you did.

DECORATIONS: Whatever your theme, you can elaborately decorate for a lot less than you would think. Online research can help you generate ideas and begin thinking outside the box, but honestly second hand stores and yard sales, even the local Salvation Army, can always help you pick up some cheap decorating supplies. Is #4 Still Number One?

(Cut Grass, Saw Wood, or Play Professional Football…)

That’s the burning question in FavreLand these days. Brett Favre is hands down one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game. He was incredibly competitive, had the best arm most had ever seen, and was just a flat-out winner who refused to lose. He constantly defeated the best of defensive schemes, time and time again. And honestly, there really is nothing wrong with any professional athlete wanting one last shot at glory. It’s understandable why someone, especially a star, would want to delay the end as long as possible. Jordan, Ali, Namath, Clemens, Armstrong, Montana, Couture, Lemieux… it’s really nothing new. We’ve seen this all before. Right? Well, kind of. When you think of retirement, you think of vacation, relaxation, pretty much just doing nothing. But, for pro athletes, when they think of retirement, they think, “What am I going to do when this is all done?” Players never actually retire from the sport, they retire from the game. Because when you love something so much, you never want to let it go, and that is the trend of athletes now a days. They’re not afraid of taking the next step in life, but afraid that they didn’t give it their all and they want to come back and try it one more time.

mind is more powerful than the body”. For these athletes that retire and want to give it one more shot to prove that they still have what it takes to compete, good for them. Let’s just hope that by coming back and playing that fans don’t have such huge expectations. The fans should remember the contributions to the sport an athlete made during their prime, and not during a comeback era. Enter Minnesota. The Vikings like Favre. They are a very good team on both sides of the ball that could escalate to Super Bowl competitors with improvement at the quarterback position. They’re also, of course, in the NFC North and play the Packers twice a year. Many are going to go out on a limb, and say the once “King of Wisconsin” is going to play for the Minnesota Vikings. Like it or not, for him or against him, most will be watching on Sundays. If Favre’s NFL journey is really over, if there are no “do-over’s” or comebacks, he will eternally be embraced by the Green Bay organization and beloved by the fans.

GOING TO THE BIG GAME? $150.00 OFF & Free Parking with a six hour minimum rental

Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter” has been a great vehicle for the UFC to get exposure for its product while building new stars. The SpikeTV reality show has launched several MMA fighters’ careers and continues to grow as one of the world’s most popular sports. When it first arrived on the scene, many people criticized the brutality presented by having two men engage in no holds barred fist fighting. Since evolving from an underground noholds barred “fight club” to what

Testing every realm of combat and self-defense disciplines, it has even managed to push boxing aside as the top fighting sport in the U.S. Showcasing its abundance of highprofile fighters and an amazing level of pure athleticism, there are no signs that MMA or the UFC will slow its fastpaced rise to fame around the globe. Chances are, if you haven’t yet caught the MMA bug, it’s only a matter of time before you’re tuning in week after week to take in all the action. Afterall, it’s the heart and determination of today’s athletes that we admire most. Rest assured, there’s certainly no shortage of courage, toughness, heart and determination in the beautiful sport of mixed martial arts.

Summer Sizzles with Bikini Madness During the summer season, the bikini is an overwhelming favorite vacation or poolside, two-piece to display one’s beautiful body. Purchasing a bikini is now easier than ever, as there are so many designs to choose from. Find a style that attracts your mind and body and have at it! Be sure to be resourceful enough to find the very best bikinis for your preference.

top is usually gathered in the middle. If you have larger breasts, this style of bikini top will minimize the look of your bust.

Monokini

When the monokini was originally created, it was a swimsuit that left the breasts completely exposed. It wasn’t popular at all and evolved into a very revealing version of the one-piece suit. Basically the monokini is a one piece suit that the sides are nearly completely cut out, giving the appearance of a bikini that the top and bottom are connected with a thin strip of material.

Classic

A classic bikini top is shaped very similar to a

traditional bra. It features two cups (which can have underwire support) and straps that go over the shoulders and connect to the band across the back. The classic bikini bottom offers complete coverage of the groin and buttocks. The legs are cut high. This swimsuit style is similar to a high-cut panty.

Swim Dress

The bandeau top is one piece of fabric that stretches straight across the chest. This is a strapless style. The

On the other end of the spectrum is the swim dress. This one-piece swimming suit has a built in skirt that provides extra coverage of your stomach, butt and upper thighs. It’s a common swimsuit style that is normally available in plus-sizes and maternity wear.

Halter

The halter bikini top features a plunging neckline and straps that tie around the back of the neck. This lifting top is great for women who want to appear as if they have bigger breasts.

Tankini

The tankini is a new twist on the classic bikini. This swimsuit style has been popular for the last four or five years and will continue to be so this season. Instead of a bikini top, this two-piece suit features a tank top instead. This is a great option for women who want the flexibility of a two piece suit without revealing their stomach.

Thong

String

Your traditional string bikini features a two triangle shaped pieces of fabric that cover the breasts. The triangles are connected with three strings. One string runs through the bottom of each triangle with the ends tying in the back to create the band. The other two strings come out of the top of each triangle and tie at the back of the neck. On the string bikini bottom, the triangle front and triangle back are connected with a strip of fabric at the crotch. The bottom is tied at the hips with strings.

The thong bikini offers full coverage in the front, but only a small strip of fabric in the rear. It’s very revealing but it’s very common on today’s beaches. The thong swimsuit can also be onepiece too. It appears like a traditional one piece suit but features a thong back, which leaves the rear exposed. Obviously, this suit isn’t the best for competitive swimming or water sports, but many people think it’s sexy. Even more revealing than the thong, the G-string features merely a string in the back. It’s definitely not the choice for shy women.

H 2 OH!!

(and a Little More of You.)

In our times, more and more people are doing what they can to beautify their place and make it look elegant and classy. In most cases, a home is a reflection of one’s self, as personality will be the basis on how you many choose to decorate their home. To state it in plain and simple terms, modern furniture under the category of contemporary designs are designed to be stylish and functional at the same time. You may visit the web for a chance to browse different online catalogs in order to select the right designs that will meet your needs and fit you budget at the same time. There’s a world of designs, themes, and patterns to choose from. Just be sure to go with your gut. Always choose patterns and designs that jump out at you, you’ll know them when you see them. The ones that

motivate, encourage, inspire, destress and/or implement a sense of your individual personality and life interests. Your soul will shine - and your home will thank you. So go get moving, online-surfing, catalog-flipping and mall-hopping! And most importantly, get to living!

Water is very important in our life. Water covers 70 percent of the surface, and about 3 percent of it is drinkable water. The brain is about 80 percent water, blood is about 90 percent and the liver is nearly 97 percent. Doctors say it is important to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day. If we don’t we become dehydrated, leading to headaches, fatigue and lack of concentration. But sometimes kids and adults alike make poor beverage choices due to the craving

“So what can you do about facing your Fears?” The Law of Distraction and InterruptionTM states · Life’s Distractions, if you allow them, will keep you from achieving your goals and dreams. · Interruptions either slow you down or completely stop you from what you set out to accomplish.

We can address our Fears in conjunction with some of these famous quotes: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt “Only when we are no longer afraid do we begin to live.” – Dorothy Thompson “The only real prison is fear, and the only real freedom is freedom from fear.” – Aung San Suu Kyi “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” – H.P. Lovecraft

of a distinguished taste. Well, those days are gone, as there is now a broad spectrum of delicious flavored bottled water to choose from. Flavored water without the carbs, it’s definitely something to put on your “To-Do” List.

When you feel you may be in fear, take a step back and realize the actions you were about to take. First, make a list of what you fear. Then start to question why you fear these things. Did you have to look deep inside of yourself to think about the whys? If so, investigate your history and learn about your fears. Can you control or change your reaction to this fear? With the results of this knowledge, you will realize there is really nothing to fear. Don’t let these fears control your life; instead control these fears with a new uplifting outlook. Use knowledge, compassion, a positive attitude and love to conquer your fears. Next issue, “How can we cope with distractions and interruptions”

Fresh off the 2009 Alternative Press Tour, Hit The Lights released the digital only EP Coast To Coast on June 23rd. The EP features two new songs, two covers and two acoustic tracks from the bands growing catalog. Says lead singer Nick Thompson “We did this to give out fans a little something to hold them over until we drop a new record in 2010, it was a chance to try some new things. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we enjoyed making it.”

Rippingtons Perform in Conjunction with Latest CD MODERN ART It’s been over two years since the release of their 20th Anniversary CD/DVD and tour. Now with their long awaited and highly anticipated new studio album, Modern Art, band founder Russ Freeman’s creative mindset blazes new trails along with an explosive new lineup; including powerful bassist Rico Belled and special guest, returning saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa who joins Russ on guitar, Dave Karasony on drums and Bill Heller on keyboards. The new line-up is reflective of Freeman’s concept of a rotating collective approach under his guidance and vision paving the way, which has included such contemporary jazz superstars as Dave Koz, Kenny G and David Benoit. Freeman, however, has particularly high praise for Kashiwa, whose original stint with the band was from 1990-99. The sax man’s exciting performances on Modern Art mark his first full-fledged immersion on a Ripps project since 1997’s Black Diamond; he performed on tracks in the meantime on Life in the Tropics (2000) and 20th Anniversary. Another key element in making Modern Art truly worth a trip to the “Ripps Museum” is Freeman’s further development and rich creative partnership and recent marriage to the multi-talented songwriter Yaredt Leon, who co-wrote four songs on The Rippingtons’ 2005 Latin themed excursion Wild Card. On the new album, Freeman and Leon co-wrote the exotically romantic “Pastels on

Canvas” and the sensual, bluespunched ballad, “I Still Believe.” Leon has sole writing credit on the graceful, tropical flavored “Sweet Lullaby.” After launching Modern Art with the funky swinging title track, Freeman—who does more lead acoustic guitar than on any previous project—breaks new ground, incorporating exotic world music elements on the CD’s first single, “Paris Groove.” The collection also includes the hypnotic “Black Book,” the easy grooving “One Step Closer” and the bluesy “Body Art” will remind longtime fans of the band’s glory days of the 90’s. “Age of Reason” and “Jet Set” expand the group into edgier territory and the CD closes with special guest artist Rick Braun adding his seductive muted trumpet to “Love Story.” Over the course of the past 23 years, one of the most funfilled parts of the journey The Rippingtons have taken with their devoted fans has been Freeman’s unique way of opening them up to his extra-musical passions with each recording. Perfectly paralleling these exciting activities as well and the music has been artist Bill Mayer’s famed (and very mobile, diverse and adaptable!) jazz cat, whose presence graces every Ripps album cover since Moonlighting. In recent years, Freeman has been cultivating his skills behind the scenes as a talented landscape painter and illustrator, and an admirer and collector of Modern Art. “I’m very proud of the paintings I have in my collection as well as my own that I’ve recently started to hang in the house. I’m hoping I can encourage some of our fans to appreciate art as much as I do, and I soon plan to start posting some of my work on our website www.rippingtons.com.”

contemplate the past as we look forward to the future, and admire their latest work of Modern Art. States Freeman: “I think the music of The Rippingtons has struck a universal chord that is hard to fully explain. I value being part of everyone’s collective musical experiences more than I ever did—and am very excited about continuing to share my passions with those who share theirs.”

New Orleans, Louisiana’s sons of Southern grindcore, Soilent Green, are obviously making an impression over at Adult Swim. Soilent Green has not only toured with the notorious masters of animated death metal, Dethklok, but have recently recorded the opening theme song to Squidbillies fourth season, which just kicked off on May 17th on Adult Swim. Vocalist Ben Falgoust comments; “Squidbillies is the best cartoon…excuse me…show on TV/Internet/Cable around!! I felt that way before we did the theme tracks and I feel even stronger about it since I’ve seen the new episodes, despite our involvement with the program, of course.” New Episodes of Squidbillies air Sunday nights at midnight (ET, PT), and don’t forget to check out Soilent Green’s latest release Inevitable Collapse In The Presence Of Conviction available as CD, limited special edition vinyl, and digital download. issues their personal thanks to those who helped out while they were on the road: The late, legendary guitarist Jeff Healey’s CD, Mess of Blues, was named Rock Blues Album of the Year at the 30th annual Blues Music Awards in Memphis in May. Mess of Blues came out shortly after Healey lost his battle with cancer and passed away

at the age of 41 on March 2nd 2008. The Rock Blues Album of the Year category was added for the first time with this year’s Blues Music Awards show. Accepting the award on his behalf was Jeff’s widow, Cristie. Acknowledging the standing ovation she said: “Jeff put so much heart and soul into this album; it marked his return to the blues. He would have been very proud to accept this award.” Moral Dilemma is a local Phoenix rock cover band specializing in the alternative and hard rock genres.
