During your self-guided journey of the indoor aquarium, come faceto-face with some of the ocean’s most treasured creatures including sharks, rays, seahorses and tropical fish. Explore seven habitat zones and the various creatures that reside in them. From the shallow tide pools along the shoreline to the depths of the Sea of Cortez, you will be amazed by the magnificent creatures along the way.

Your visit to SEA LIFE is not only an awe-inspiring adventure, but also an educational experience. Learn how a sea star eats while participating in the interactive Quiz Trail. Discover the feeding habits of the aquarium’s star creatures at daily talks and feeds. Do you wonder why the sharks don’t eat the other fish in their tank? Find out at the JAWsome Sharks talk on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 2:00pm and watch as our aquarists feed these top predators. One of the most popular displays in the aquarium is the 360 degree ocean tunnel where you are surrounded by amazing creatures. This 161,000 gallon tank is where you will meet Ziva, the first rescued sea turtle in Arizona. Ziva was injured by a boat in 2010 and suffered injuries to her head and shell. After rehabilitating at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, Ziva flew across the country to her new home at SEA LIFE Arizona where she loves to watch visitors walk through the tunnel.

This summer you can also explore the new Jellyfish Discovery exhibit, available at SEA LIFE Arizona until the end of 2013. Celebrate Independence Day Early at Harold’s Corral! Celebrate Independence Day Cave Creek-style! The Town’s spectacular “3rd of July” Fireworks Display takes place at sunset on Wednesday at Harold’s Corral, 6895 E. Cave Creek Road, in Cave Creek. The festive celebration starts at 5 p.m. with an outside barbecue, followed by live music throughout the night. Country-western band EastonAshe will perform outside from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Young Country will energize the crowd inside from 8:30 p.m. to closing. The party will also feature drink specials, prizes, face painting, shaved ice and the Mobile Video Game Truck. Harold’s is one of just a few venues in the north Valley to see a fullscale professional fireworks show. With the help of Rural Metro, the fireworks are safely shot off from a hill behind the restaurant, making the largest display in Cave Creek one of the most exhilarating shows in the Valley. “We’ve been the proud host of this show for more than 20 years,”

said Danny Piacquadio, co-owner of Harold’s Corral. “We know how important it is to our community and we’re grateful to the Cave Creek Merchants and Events Association, the Carefree-Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Cave Creek, Tumbleweed Hotel, Yellow Cab Company, Walmart and local merchants for their support.” Admission to the 3rd of July Fireworks Display is free for open seating first come first serve. For reservations, go to www. haroldscorral.com to purchase and secure a table online. Tables are priced at: two-top for $10; four-top for $15 or a ten-top for $30. Harold’s will also provide free shuttle service to transport people around town from 6 p.m. to midnight. For more information about the 3rd of July Fireworks, call Harold’s Corral at (480) 488-1906.

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Augustine’

‘Byzantium’

‘Despicable Me 2’

‘Just Like a Woman’

A look at the relationship between pioneering 19th century French neurologist Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot (Vincent Lindon) and his star teenage patient - a kitchen maid (Soko) who is left partially paralyzed after a seizure. (NR - 101 minutes)

Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan play mother and daughter vampires seek refuge in a run-down coastal resort. As knowledge of their secret spreads, their past catches up on them with deathly consequence. (R - 118 Minutes)

Stan: A mesmerizing period film based on true events, this view of early steps to solidify procedures to treat organic disorders of the nerves and nervous system, has frightening overtones as the experimental aspects come to light.

Joseph: Fear not the fangless vampires in “Byzantium” for their thirst of your blood. Instead, fear this dramatic fantasy flick for its dippy dialogue, placid pace and convoluted chronology.

Steve Carell once again voices the evil villain Gru, who this time is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help deal with a powerful new super criminal (Benjamin Bratt). Other voice talents include Kristen Wiig, Russell Brand, Ken Jeong and Steve Coogan. (PG - 98 minutes)

Sienna Miller and Golshifteh Farahani play a Chicago housewife and a North African immigrant, respectively, who flee to Santa Fe. One wants to achieve her dream of becoming a professional belly dancer while the other is on the run from the police. (R - 106 minutes)

Randy: Easily the funniest film of the year and most enjoyable animated film of the summer. Better than the first. Dee-do. Dee-do. Dee-do.

Joseph: “Just Like a Woman” could have been incredibly inspiring. But its over-generalizing, especially when it comes to men, inhibits the movie’s ability to entertain much less uplift.

Best survival movies George Clooney

Joseph: “Despicable Me 2” is better than its predecessor, resonating emotionally with themes of overcoming past rejections and being accepted for your true self despite your despicability.

“The Towering Inferno” (1974) Producer Irwin Allen refitted his “Poseidon” premise to those trapped in a burning San Francisco skyscraper in his other major disaster classic. “The Perfect Storm” (2000) A fishing boat captain (George Clooney) and his crew run into a monster sea storm on the way back from a bountiful expedition. BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

‘Blazing Saddles’ (1974) was shot on the same set (apart from the shop names, of course) as ‘Westworld’ (1973).

BET, YOU

Will Smith’S

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

top movieS “Seven Pounds” (2008): Smith has to play a lot close to the chest, and does it well, in this drama about a man who truly changes the lives of several strangers. “I Am Legend” (2007): Meeting a big challenge for any actor – essentially holding the screen by himself for a while – Smith does an effective job with the last-man-on-Earth premise. “Ali” (2001): Smith transformed himself impressively in director Michael Mann’s biography of boxing legend Muhammad Ali. “Men in Black” (1997): In tandem with Tommy Lee Jones, Smith enjoyably defended Earth from aliens in this popular sci-fi comedy.

STAN ROBINSON Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With more than 22 years of experience in media production, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. JOSEPH J. AIRDO

June 2013 is the start of seven years of seeing movies and writing about them for AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine! My Executive Assistant, Cynthia Tracy, who has as one of her responsibilities of transcribing my interviews, came up with ‘Bet You Didn’t Know’ as it relates to my involvement! 6 years = 312 weeks of movies; watching on the average of 5 movies per week = 1,560 movies; with an average movie running time of 2 hours = 3,120 hours of viewing (not counting trailers that are also watched), and 91 interviews of which about three fourths are with producers, directors, and production persons!

California Digital Photographer Deprise Brescia Explores the Concept of Changing Personal Vibrations to Rise above Surrounding Denser Vibrations She’s an actor, artist, author, fitness personality and entrepreneur, but most of all, Deprise Brescia is an adventurist whose experience living in and visiting more than 40 countries influences her ability to pick up on vibrations and share her personal stories through her art and digital photography.

Brescia, of Los Angeles, will exhibit her newest work during her show, “The Experience: Outside the Matrix,” which runs Wed., July 10 through Tues., August 27 at Gallery J2, 10345 N. Scottsdale Rd., in Scottsdale (southeast corner of Scottsdale Rd. and Shea Blvd). While she has exhibited her work nationally, the show marks her first exhibit in Arizona. Art enthusiasts and collectors are invited to meet Brescia during a special artist reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on July 10.

Guests will view vibrant, abstract digital photographs that explore the concept of changing one’s personal vibration enough to rise above surrounding denser vibrations. “It is really about letting go of all the thoughts, feelings and beliefs that keep us limited and what if we made an amazing shift and saw the world as we know it through new eyes,” Brescia said. “I am a big fan of ‘What If.’ It fills my thoughts on a regular basis and just pushes me to think differently.” Laila Atshan, Gallery J2’s director, said Brescia is known for her thought-provoking work and beautiful imagery. “In many ways, she uses her photography to tell stories,” said Atshan. Brescia credits her family heritage for her love of the world and curious nature. Her diverse ethnicities include French, Italian, Spanish, Irish, Welsh, American Indian and others. With an orphaned great grandmother from Belize who was raised and educated in a New Orleans’ convent, there’s unknown ancestry. She also believes it is important to dream and hopes her exhibit inspires people to let go of fear and negative vibrations.

“I want people to know life is meant to be really good and rich and filled with amazing things that you dream of. I want people to let go of the past, forget and forgive, make room for the new and exciting blessing waiting to take the place of sorrow, pain and guilt,” she said. “I want people to dream, play, wish, love and follow their bliss. I want them to be surrounded by things and art to remind them of this and of their divinity. I want them to recognize the beauty in themselves as reflected in art. Is that too much?” Gallery J2’s hours are Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; The gallery is open by appointment only on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. sauces. The tenders had a great batter that made them crunchy and tasty. The onion rings are big and thick, mozzarella sticks excellent and the wings were not “saucy and goopy” but cooked as well as any sports bar in town. Fried Pickles completed our snack attack and they were quite good, sliced very thin like a potato chip, breaded and fried - extremely light to eat.

No Finer Diner! Everyone knows the original 5 & Diner location at 5220 N. 16th Street in Phoenix. It calls you like an after-hour beacon when you absolutely must have a late night snack. But this fun destination isn’t just for alcohol-soaked night owls. The great food never stops…24-hours a day, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is the only 5 & Diner that still rocks around the clock. When we were offered the chance to review the joint, the 3 of us jumped at the chance like 3 fat men on a jelly roll! Everything about this place is fun, from the 50’s diner motif, the campy-flirtatious wait staff, the comfort food and the non-stop oldies playing on the internal juke system. You just can’t be depressed here. Everyone in the restaurant takes great pride in delivering not just great food, but a fun experience that you can’t get anywhere else. So don’t go anywhere else. Go here.

Our retro feast started with The Combo Appetizer Platter, which is a good choice if you have 4-6 people who don’t agree on much. There’s something for everyone here with Mozzarella sticks, Chicken “Love Me” Tenders, wings, onion rings and a variety of dipping

Then came the milk shakes…YES! If 5 & Diner were a cult, this would be the Kool-Aid! We savored the Oreo, Black & White and Chocolate shakes brought to us by our flirty and fun waitress Hannah Bananah (Yup, she really works there!). They all tasted great and we would highly recommend them. Just look at the pics we shot and say you don’t want one!

Now comes the comfort. The Smothered Chicken Dinner has a great southwest taste thanks to the peppers, onions, jack cheese and mushrooms that are uh… smothered all over it. The mashed potatoes are homemade like grandma used to make – From scratch. If your grandma doesn’t make ‘em like this, you should take her here so she can learn how. We highly recommend them. Next came the Cadillac Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. Warning: This dish is a MONSTER. It comes piled high with tasty onion straws and mashed potatoes.

There is gravy everywhere and a huge helping of meatloaf hides at the bottom. It is seriously, one of the better meatloaf dishes in town. Three Forks Up!

ing our eyes in disbelief. Not typical. Get it.

Blue Moon Cheeseburger with Kettle Chips. The great thing about this burger is that the blue cheese is not overpowering thanks to being mixed with Jack and cream cheese. The fusion of cheeses is a great idea and ensures no “bite” when you bite. If you’re a blue cheese hater, try this one! The Kettle Chips are worth ordering as a snack all by themselves. Tasty and crispy and not over-seasoned like everywhere else that tries to make them. And, Bada-Boom, they’re made from scratch in the next room!

And finally, the Diner Banana Split hit the table with a mighty thud. It’s made with tasty caramelized bananas and 3 scoops of delicious chocolate, strawberry and vanilla ice cream.

For Dessert, you MUST try the Bread Pudding. This signature dessert is topped with whipped cream and drizzled with caramel but it tastes like a sweet French Toast treat that had all of us open-

So, if it’s been a while since you Be-Bopped or if gravity has dropped your Doo-Wop, fear not! You owe it to yourself to find out why this diner has outlasted the others! Go in and feed the jukebox a few nickels and enjoy a fantastic feeding of sumptuous comfort food.

The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

DAY DRINKING The last time we talked about day drinking was over three years ago. Much has changed in Phoenix since that time. It seems appropriate to revisit that topic now. I’ve always loved the drinking songs of Tom T. Hall. The classic, to me anyway, is “I Like Beer”. That song gets right to the point and addresses the situation head on. Another favorite from Mr. Hall is “Day Drinking”, a story about a couple of guys out on the town since 9:30 or 10:00 that morning.

40

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com

Not only that, but they are regulars at spending the daytime hours in bars telling the waitress how they won the war. Thinking about that song, along with a couple of afternoon beers, it occurred to me that Phoenix is a town with some great day drinking bars. Bars that are at least as much fun during the day as they are at night, some might be more so. We have plenty of them, so let’s focus on the ones that feature great craft beer. Last time we looked at some great

bars, so let’s recap those, and then add some other fine ones to the mix. Right at the top of the list has to be TT Roadhouse. Located on 68th Street, just north of Thomas in Scottsdale, this tiny bar is real easy to drive right by. Once you get in there, it is an enchanted world. Plenty of great craft and an amazing jukebox that you can have all to yourself during daylight hours. Sun Up Brewery at 322 E. Camelback is on our list. A small bar and dining area gives way to a courtyard which seems com-

fortable even during the worst of the summer, and beyond that, the brewery building which also has a large open space filled with tables, and another bar. ew Orleans is richly flavored with food, music and fun. Abita’s full flavored ales and lagers are hand-crafted to match the mood of the Big Easy. Brewed with the finest ingredients, Abita Beer has no preservatives, additives or stabilizers and is made with the pure artesian water of Abita Springs.

If wine is more your thing, take a trip to Cave Creek and try out Brix Wines at Cave Creek Road and Tom Darlington. This is one of those places where you walk in an you are an instant regular. Brix is a fine place to while away an afternoon. A wonderful selection of wines, an owner who will talk sports, country music, politics or just about anything else that interests you and a diverse clientele make this a great stop. On any given day, you might find yourself sitting next to the guitar player from one of the hot local bands, a professional bull rider, or any of the other fascinating people you might meet there. there? And you may think that Yucca is all about great bands, and it is. Still, sitting there during the day time nursing a Bell’s Oberon or a Left Hand Milk Stout poured off the nitrogen faucet makes for a relaxing afternoon. With a 6:00 AM Happy Hour, how can you go wrong? On 7th Street at Sheridan, look for The Main Ingredient. Matt Diamond, who has been behind the scenes at many great bars and restaurants in Phoenix, steps out front to present his version of a great bar. With a patio as big as the inside, a top notch staff, and incredible taps and bottles, how can you go wrong? Couple that with fantastic food and you can let the day run right in to the evening. If you need anything else…Happy Hour runs all day until about 6:00 PM.

where an afternoon can pass by pretty quickly. Boulders on Broadway makes for a nice stop on any day drinking tour. Pop in for lunch and you will already see patrons enjoying some fine beers. Plenty of rotating handles and just enough mainstays gives anybody a good reason to stop in regularly. Since the last time we did this, Tempe has gained some great day drinking locations. First on that list has to be World of Beer. Located at 6th Street and Mill Avenue, World of Beer is a playland for the beer lover. 58 handles and 500 bottles guarantees that you will always find something you like. Add to that a knowledgeable staff along with an open feeling and you will be running out to add more money to the meter on a regular basis. You can almost always count on a couple of brewery reps or other industry people stopping in during the day, so if you have questions about your favorite beers, you might have experts on hand to answer them. Right down the street from World of Beer, is Handlebar and Grill. This bike and pet friendly bar has the feel of a

European small town bar. Enjoy the big patio when the weather is right and choose from all kinds of great beers. Hungry? Try one of their amazing brats for just the right snack or lunch. Two other outstanding Tempe locations include longtime favorite Bison Witches along with Mellow Mushroom. Speaking of Mellow Mushroom, any of their three locations makes for great day drinking. Check them out at Happy Valley and I-17, Tempe or CityNorth next to Desert Ridge. Have a pizza and several great beers. Recently, the CityNorth location had The Bruery Sour in the Rye on tap so always look for the rarities there. O.H.S.O. Nano Brewery at 4900 East Indian School has a great selection of beers, a nice front patio, fantastic food and a great staff. Sounds like a perfect recipe for day drinking. Enjoy the bar or front patio area, or sit towards the back and watch the nano brewery in operation. Not all the beers are from the brewery, in fact, most are Continued On Page 43

not. But the emphasis on local beer is a key to making this an afternoon gathering spot. Technically, I am not sure you can day drink on the weekends, but their back patio really kicks it up a notch on Saturday and Sunday; and their brunch is outstanding. Patios are great fun and one of the best is at Brat Haus in Scottsdale. Gourmet Brats and a great beer selection is just the thing to complement the huge outdoor space at this location. Plenty to do and see out back, with the feel of a German Beer Garden, but if indoors is your thing, a comfortable bar with some other tables is a great place to belly up. Try the Krombacher in a boot if you really want the full

There are plenty more places out there and we will cover some of those in our next day drinking column, which hopefully won’t take another three years. In the meantime, no matter when you have a beer, whether it’s a breakfast beer, a beer with lunch, an early afternoon, or starting the evening off, day drinking is a nice change of pace. Enjoy the places above and go for the good beer whenever you can.

LOCAL BREWERIES LOVE IT IN THE CAN! Hello again beer lovers, today let’s chat about Craft Beer in Cans. Cans have become quite popular with our local breweries in the last couple of years for more than a few great reasons. First things first, brewing craft beer is an exact science and a true artisan’s statement of who they are. Having said so, a brewer naturally wants the best available vessel to transport their goods to the customer. Why are cans better? After being filled, they contain much less oxygen than a standard bottle so the brew stays fresh longer. Cans also do not allow in any UV light to “Skunk” the beer, therefore no odd odors are present to affect your drinking pleasure. Furthermore, they chill more quickly, are easier to transport and don’t require additional labeling after production. The technology in modern cans is so good these days that I tell people to think of them as Very Small Kegs. If you like draft beer, you will love canned beer! Mudshark in Lake Havasu City was the first Arizona brewery to wrap a can around craft beer but there are quite a few others following in their footsteps. Four Peaks, SanTan, Grand Canyon, Prescott Brewing and others are all currently delivering delicious beer to your local bar or store in cans all over the state. To move a step further, SanTan were the first and currently the only ones in town canning their special releases. The ever popular Mr. Pineapple plus Sex Panther Chocolate Porter and the upcoming Super Monk IPA can all be purchased with the changing of the seasons. How cool is that?

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Do you like in the can? Trust me when I say once you try it you will be hooked! Until next week, Cheers!

Nothing spells freedom better than a celebration with family, friends, fireworks and barbeque in the great outdoors. Oh wait… and wine, of course! This year, several Arizona wineries are hosting Fourth of July events— sporting the red, white and blue and giving us just another reason to feel proud to be an American. Plan your Independence Day weekend right and you can hit all three of these great events! Fourth of July at Tombstone Wine Works Fourth of July weekend, July 4 – July 7, Tombstone WineWorks will be unveiling its new location at

15 North 4th Street in Tombstone, across the highway from the OK Corral. Each day from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., enjoy wine tastings and festivities, and view fireworks from the deck on the evening of July 4. The event is $15 to attend. Fourth of July “Whole Pig Cookout” at Dos Cabezas Join Dos Cabezas at the winery in Sonoita in welcoming their new neighbor, one of Arizona’s favorite chefs—Greg LaPrad. Greg will open his new restaurant in Sonoita, Overland Trout, later this year. In the meantime, they are putting him to work on the patio at the winery on July 4. Plan on coming out early to

check out Patagonia’s July Fourth parade (11 a.m. start time), then head over to the winery in Sonoita for an outdoor cookout dinner (from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.) before returning to Patagonia for the fireworks at Patagonia High School once the sun sets.

weekend celebration on July 6 and July 7, at Granite Creek Vineyards. Celebrate summer with awardwinning wine, large trees, lush lawns, live music, a delicious winefriendly lunch menu and Fourth of July specials available for purchase from Block Six Catering.

The weekend event will be held from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on both days, with music from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., featuring Road One South on July 6, and Just 4 Mama, Fun Family Bluegrass Band on July 7.

Yes puts a new twist on some of their old classics. Rave reviews have been pouring in, Ben Wener of the Orange County Register had this to say, “The music was as rich and challenging and mesmerizing as ever, glacial one moment, grooving the next. Few bands that have lasted this long can say the same, let alone actually do justice to past glories. Albums include 1971’s The Yes Album, 1972’s Close To The Edge and 1977’s Going For The One. This tour marks the first time since 1973 that Yes–bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, keyboardist Geoff Downes– and singer Jon Davison have performed an album onstage in its entirety.

Founded in 1968 by Jon Anderson and Chris Squire, Yes thrived long before disco, punk rock and rap pounded from subwoofers. The progressive British rock group achieved worldwide success creating some of the most influential music in rock history, timeless pieces such as “Roundabout,” “Close to the Edge,” “I’ve Seen All Good People,” “Owner of a Lonely Heart” and countless others. With tens of millions of records sold over the band’s four-decade career Yes continues to create inspiring, masterful music.

ALBUM REVIEWS The Mars Patrol Releases Engaging Young Lovers, Goo Goo Dolls’ Magnetic is Familiar but Fun London pop rockers The Mars Patrol are back with a new EP, Young Lovers, that is absolute gold. Both “Here We Go” and the closing title track showcase the band’s upbeat sound, and the echoing guitars will make you want to air guitar in a heartbeat. Midtempo shufflers like “Coming Home” showcase the band’s emotional side, while “I Wonder” gradually builds into something explosive. Singer Davina Divine’s rapturous vocals lead the way, and both she and guitarist-songwriter Ross Nelson demonstrate their knack for writing insanely catchy melodies and razor-sharp lyrics. Fans will dig this latest release because it hits all the right notes—positive lyrics, great hooks, nice vocals—but if they’re new to you then Young Lovers is a great way to get acquainted with this fantastic band.

Magnetic is proof that after almost three decades as a band, the Goo Goo Dolls can’t really surprise you anymore, so they give you what you expect and hope it’s good enough. “When the World Breaks Your Heart” is their latest pop ode to grandiose claims of how they will prove their love for another, and the pop rock gem “More of You” has an anthemic quality to it as singer Johnny Rzeznik talks about wanting to drive his lover crazy the way she does. Bassist Robby Takac leads the charge on the rip-roaring rocker “Bringing on the Light” and the driving, echoing rock ‘n’ roll of “Last Hot Night” is vintage Goo Goo Dolls. Magnetic doesn’t blaze any new trails here, but fans will love it.
