The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures officially announced the launch of Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 1,800 museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2013. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. The complete list of participating museums is available at www.arts. gov/bluestarmuseums. “We are excited to participate in Blue Star Museums again and will begin honoring free admission on Saturday, May 25, 2013,” said The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures Director of Marketing Gentry Spronken. “Blue Star Museums is a collaboration between the arts and military communities,” said
NEA Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa. “Our work with Blue Star Families and with more than 1,800 museums ensures that we can reach out to military families and thank them for their service and sacrifice.” “Blue Star Museums is something that service members and their families look forward to every year and we are thrilled with the continued growth of the program,” said Blue Star Families CEO Kathy Roth-Douquet. “Through this distinctive collaboration between Blue Star Families, the National Endowment for the Arts and more than 1,800 museums across the United States, service members and their families can connect with our national treasures with this unparalleled opportunity to visit some of the country’s finest museums for free.” This year, more than 1,800 (and counting) museums in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa
are taking part in the initiative, including more than 450 new museums this year. Museums are welcome to join Blue Star Museums throughout the summer. The effort to recruit museums has involved partnerships with the American Association of Museums, the Association of Art Museum Directors, the Association of Children’s Museums, the American Association of State and Local History, and the Association of Science-Technology Centers.
This year’s Blue Star Museums represent not just fine arts museums, but also science museums, history museums, nature centers, and 75 children’s museums. Among this year’s new participants are the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California, Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum in Northport, Michigan, the Totem Heritage Center in Ketchikan, Alaska, and the World Museum of Mining in Butte, Montana.

Every night at this time of year, huge clouds of Mexican free-tailed bats swirl out from under Tucson bridges at sunset and fly into the twilight sky. The bats start flying at sunset (about 7:30 p.m.) and usually fly north. This is a great opportunity for the entire family to enjoy beautiful sunsets and appreciate firsthand this awesome spectacle. Docents will have bat detectors and hands-on materials and will be available to answer questions.

20 All-You-Can-Eat-Tapas Solves Problems and is a Cool Way to Eat at Tapas Fusion In the humid Mediterranean Climate of Spain, the creation of tapas solved a problem of flies in drinks. To keep the flies out, Spanish barkeepers in the early years of serving alcohol, put bits of food and bread on a “on top of” (or Tapas) a beer or glass of sherry. The hot dry climate of the Tucson desert presents other problems when food is left out in the open air - it quickly becomes dry and unappetizing. Tapas Fusion at 2970 Campbell Ave has come up with a fun way to serve tapas in our challenging climate. Over 21 different Tapas are available to diners but instead of being left under glass counters as done in humid Spain, Tapas Fusion has AllYou-Can-Eat-Tapas for $20. After selections of Tapas are ordered, servers bring the fresh appetizer sized delectable directly from the open kitchen to the table. All tapas are made to order and served fresh. The All-You-Can-Eat-Tapas for $20 a person allows diners to combine many different appetizer sized portioned Tapas into complete meals. This form of eating tapas is fun for groups or a single person who just wants a new exiting variety of fresh, homemade flavors to explore and satisfy their hunger. Come into Tapas Fusion to enjoy the All-You-Can-Eat-Tapas for $20 a person this summer and enjoy special Mojitos, Fusion Twists, Kentucky Buck or other select summer cocktails for an additional $5 each.

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.
Joseph: “Berberian Sound Studio” offer’s audiences nothing but a bunch of unsettling sounds and intrusive images, taking them down a tedious rabbit-hole toward ultimate nonsense.
‘The Iceman’ Michael Shannon plays a man who, appearing to be living the American dream as a devoted husband and father, is a ruthless killer-for-hire. Other stars include Ray Liotta, Winona Ryder, Chris Evans and David Schwimmer. (R - 106 minutes) Stan: Age-old adage ‘nothing personal, its only business’ is laid bare as the dichotomy of separation of what one does for a living and what one is when living, in an excellent complex characterization of a hit man. Randy: This real-life crime, drama thriller is worth seeing, especially for the performance by Michael Shannon who may just snag a nomination.
‘Berberian Sound Studio’
‘20 Feet from Stardom’ Filmmaker Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. These gifted artists span a range of styles, genres and eras of popular music, but each has a story to share of life spent in the shadows of superstardom. (PG-13 - 100 minutes) Stan:Bringing to the forefront a profession most don’t realize or consider, this documentary presents the passion, fervor, and in some instances dreams not realized, easily making my ‘must see list’ of 2013. Randy:Focusing onseveral of America’s best singers, most with namesunfamiliar to even the savviest of music aficionados, you will clap, cheer, weep and love this sure-fire Oscar-contender. You will also download the soundtrack when you get home.
10
Toby Jones plays a technician who works on the sound effects for a gruesome horror film. His nightmarish task slowly takes over his psyche, driving him to confront his own past. (NR - 94 minutes)
Joseph: Michael Shannon paints a portrait of a chillingly dangerous yet curiously charismatic character in “The Iceman” - the powerhouse performer’s most climactic accomplishment to date.
MOVIE TWEETS! Still haven’t seen that movie that your friends have been talking about? Film Columnist Randy Montgomery recaps what you may have missed in 140 characters or less. ‘The Heat’ ~ While many of the scripted jokes fall flat, Bullock and McCarthy make a great team and display their different comedic talents. Grade: B
‘White House Down’ ~ Didn’t we see this same story a few months ago? Tatum makes a better hero than Gerard Butler. A ridiculously far-fetched good time. Grade: B
‘Monsters University’ ~ Not the original, but there’s a lot to like about this prequel. Families & frats like will get a kick out of going to this college Grade: A-
July 3rd, 2013 - July 9th, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com
‘World War Z’ ~ Silly dialogue, implausible scenarios & really bad haircut on Brad Pitt. This summer’s zombie movie will have you feeling like one. Grade: C ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ ~ A vanity project that manages to redeem itself in the end despite its outward pretentiousness. Methinks you might like it. Grade: B ‘The Kings of Summer’ ~ My favorite film of the summer so far is an indie sleeper that should please older teens, young adults and discerning audiences. Grade: A
Featuring the voices of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand, Steve Coogan, Ken Jeong, Elsie Fisher, Dana Gaier and Moises Arias. Rated: PG Run time: 98 min
‘The Lone Ranger’ ~ From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “The Lone Ranger,” a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to
life through new eyes. Native American warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against
greed and corruption. “The Lone Ranger” also stars Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter. A Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films presentation, “The Lone Ranger” is directed by Gore Verbinski and

The Magic of 4 Avenue th
4th Avenue, a magic street of dreams, has undergone numerous evolutions throughout the years beginning with the building of the railroads. The 4th Avenue Business District stretches from University Boulevard on the north end to 9th Street on the south end and serves as a major link between the University of Arizona and downtown Tucson. The Avenue evolved to provide the goods and services for the surrounding residential neighborhoods along with bars and restaurants. In the late 1940s the area gradually changed into a light industrial and commercial district followed by a ghetto type blight.
12
Then in the early 1970s the Avenue was inhabited by maturing “hippies” who opened businesses heavy in the arts & craft scene. Avenue customers were impressed that these hippies were hard working and pretty good business people. The Avenue began to draw customers from all over the City and from many socio – economic levels. This is when the 4th Avenue Street Fair came into being. The Avenue and its businesses have continued to thrive. The Fourth Avenue Merchants Association (FAMA) was formed to support the economic well being of the area businesses and to promote the arts. A group of volunteers
formed the Old Pueblo Trolley to refurbish vintage trolleys and run them between 4th Avenue and the University. FAMA planted
night time entertainment venues. Then there is the magic of people watching while enjoying coffee and a snack at one of the sidewalk

cafes. There is something for everyone.
Indeed 4th Avenue has become a magic place. It is magic for the merchant who had a dream and decided to open a business along its tree lined streets. It is magic for it visitors who want a unique shopping and dining experience. It is a magic with a plethora of
Of the 100 businesses in the 4th Avenue Business District, 17 businesses have been on the Avenue over 25 years. Caruso’s Restaurant and The Shanty have been around for over 70 years. 70% of the businesses are women owned. The Avenue is the perfect

incubator for new businesses. The 2 annual Street Fairs now rank in the top 100 nationwide. These are popular community events and that have been enjoyed by multiple generations. Good food, arts and crafts and entertainment abound. 300,000 visitors are introduced to the Avenue twice a year. The 3 surrounding neighborhoods and 3 service organizations share in 1/2 of the beer sales profits. Numerous other non-profit organizations are afforded an opportunity to promote their charity and causes. The hiring of cleaning personnel, security staff, supervisors benefits the whole community. The purchase of street fair goods and services pumps money into the local economy. Nearly 60,000 out of town visitors help support Tucson’s hotels and restaurants. With the 4th Avenue Street Fairs as its economic engine, FAMA takes care of sidewalk cleaning, flower planting, tree pruning and trash disposal. FAMA also markets the area with a wide distribution of brochures, TV & radio advertising and monthly sales promotions. Outdoor music venues can be enjoyed on selected weekends. There is always something happening on 4th Avenue. It is the magic street of dreams.

GARDEN BISTRO BURGERS By Jim Gressinger A few weeks ago, I dined at the Garden Bistro in Tucson’s Tohono Chul Park with my friend, Marcia. She wanted to buy me lunch because she had missed my birthday bash the previous week. Very thoughtful! I had reviewed Garden Bistro last year and have recommended it highly ever since for several reasons. First, the food & service is VERY good. Second, diners are situated in or very near one of the finest, most extensive, and beautiful gardens in the Southwest.
Burger- cobb-smoked bacon, sharp cheddar cheese, tumbleweed onions, “Chul” sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion & pickle ($14.50). Garden Bistro also offers sweet potato fries. I have no doubt, those who like sweet potato fries will like the ones here. However, neither Marcia nor I care for them because they’re just too sweet. It would be like ordering a burger with a side of candy. Not appealing. Regular fries ($4). Sweet potato fries ($4.50). A Great Burger Starts With Great Beef Garden Bistro beef comes from Harris Ranch in California. This family-owned
While awaiting our meals, Marcia & I had a brief discussion on how to make great French fries.
slowly. And then there was the sauce. Marcia hailed our waitress who in turn hailed Chef Hale.
Don’t Forget To Blanch Marcia explained.
A few minutes later, Chef Chris Hale arrived at our table certain that we were about to lodge a complaint.
“One thing I learned about fries years ago when I worked at a restaurant that wanted to make their own fries; all the best ones come out of a frozen bag. We tried for months to get a crispy French fry, but you need to blanch them. Blanching takes more time than to prepare a burger, so to keep them fresh, they’re frozen. We tried a hundred
Third, the gardens of Tohono Chul attract a variety of birds. So, if you’re seated on the patio, you have lots of avian company along with their rhapsodic vocalizations. Here, the price of a meal includes tiny hummingbirds performing aerial acrobatics for your enjoyment. Actually, Tohono Chul has several different kinds of gardens, plus a fine art gallery, greenhouse, exotic plant sales, performing arts events, classes & workshops, a museum shop, & a lot more.
“I think I’ll have a Chul Burger, with fries.” Marcia told our waitress. What? Wait! I didn’t come to the Garden Bistro for a burger. They have so many other great dishes. I particularly enjoy their quiche with a side of fresh fruit. And their Tres Locos Tacos … Yummy! However, I was intrigued. Could a Garden Bistro Burger be the best, and no one knows it? Should it even be on our list of viable candidates, such as Monkey Burger; or even in the same class as Zinburger? I suddenly felt compelled to find out. “I believe I’ll have one also … with fries, please.”

I ordered the same Chul burger as Marcia: Harris Ranch Natural Beef

Marcia asked Chris about his sauce, which was just outstanding … accentuating the taste of an already delicious patty, but not overpowering it. Chris revealed his secret (sorta), which he said is not really all that complicated. “We just start with mayo and add some chili, and some of this and some of that, and a pinch of … Truth be told, Chris had put a lot of thought into that sauce, and it paid off. “The French fries were also excellent,” I told him. And I meant it. Garden Bistro’s French fries tasted somewhat different than Cayton’s, but as good … crisp & delicious.
Tohono Chul was named one of the World’s Great Botanical Gardens by Travel + Leisure. It was also listed on National Geographic Traveler as one of the Top 22 Secret Gardens in the U.S. & Canada. Marcia mentioned that she had been reading my blog and wondered if I had chosen a winner for our Best Burger in Tucson. I explained that we still had a few more burger places to review. That burger conversation continued for a while, at which point our attentive waitress asked if we had decided.
“Our compliments,” I told him. “Your burgers are as good as those at Cayton’s” (Cayton’s Burger Bistro at the Golf Club at Dove Mountain; aka The Ritz). “And I mean that as high praise ‘cause Cayton’s will be at or near the top of our List of the Best Burgers in Tucson.”
“Chris, how do you prepare them?” Marcia asked. “They just come out of a frozen bag,” replied the Chef. spread is known for extremely high quality beef, which may or may not be Black Angus. Their cattle are not strictly “grass-fed” like the cattle from the Northern Arizona ranch where the new Diablo Burger Downtown gets its super-lean beef. Harris Ranch tells us: “Our beef comes from cattle that spends approximately 80% of their lives grazing on grass. We finish them for a brief period – typically 120 days – on a nutritionally-balanced diet of corn and other feed grains, plus alfalfa hay, vitamins and minerals. Feeding grains, like corn, helps produce beef that’s more tender, juicy and flavorful.” So there you have it. The Fries, The Fries! Now, what about Garden Bistro’s French fries? You may recall that Neighbor Roy & I agree: Monkey Burger’s fries are the best we have ever had in our combined 149 years of burger-munching. So, how do Garden Bistro fries compare to Monkey fries?
different ways without blanching them and they all tasted like gross In N Out Burger fries.” For those of you not familiar with the finer points of potato frying, blanching is a cooking technique in which food is briefly immersed in boiling water or fat. When making French fries, the cut potatoes can be blanched in oil at medium heat and then cooled before frying them a second time at a higher temperature. Now you know. It wasn’t long before our Chul Burgers & fries arrived. We were both into our 3rd or 4th bite when we launched into a critique. The problem for a restaurant critic, such as myself, was straightforward: there wasn’t anything to criticize. Cooked to perfection, the beef patty was juicier than the grass-fed Diablo Burger, and more flavorful. But it wasn’t as greasy as Cody’s or Lindy’s. The bun was fresh and tasty, as was the lettuce & tomato. The bacon was unmistakably smoked, probably VERY

Marcia smiled and looked at me with eyes that said, “See, I told you. Blanching!” I couldn’t argue. Yet it seems counter-intuitive that something that good can just come frozen out of a bag. Neighbor Roy & I have one or two more burger places to review before we get down to the serious business of choosing the Best Burger in Tucson. Should have a winner in a week or two.
