Bye Bye Birdie! A Fun and Innocent Hit Returns To Arizona Broadway Theatre. By Nicholas Connell

It takes a special director and a special cast to pull off a revival of a hit musical from our timeless musical history. But that is just what Arizona Broadway Theatre in Peoria has done with its current production of Bye Bye Birdie- in splendid fashion! Director Robert Colby Harper took this innocent cast and molded them into a dynamic expression of comedy and characters right out of Midwest America! His direction was fun and exciting with a talented cast of actors as sweet as Iowa apples. All good comedy/musicals have that leading lady who help us fall in love again with the innocence of days gone by. That lady came in the sweet bouquet of Erin O’Neil as Rose Alvarez. Erin was a perfect fit as the loyal and lovely Rose who never quite gives up on her music man, Albert Peterson, played nervously and delightfully by Michael La Masa.

June 25th - July 1st, 2009

These two were the match made in heaven during the wild ride created by a Mr. Conrad Birdie, our rockstar legend played to perfection by Justin Justras. Justin was the show of shows for the teens to swoon over during this tv explosion. His teen of choice for one last kiss before entering the service came out in shining fashion, as Chelsea Cree Groen, playing his promotional side kick Kim MacAfee, let everyone know she was ready to be his girl. Throw in a exuberant chorus of teens, adults, boyfriends, girlfriends, moms, and a mayor, and you get a Bye Bye Birdie full of fun and wonder! There’s also plenty of music to tap along to as the ABT band was in top form playing the hits ‘Put on a Happy Face”, “How Lovely to be a Woman”, “One Boy”, “A Healthy,Normal, American Boy”, “One Last Kiss”, “What Did I Ever See In Him”, “A Lot of Livin to Do”, “Kids”, “Baby Talk To Me”, “Spanish Rose” and the finale “Rosie”. Get out to Arizona Broadway Theatre and enjoy the magic of “Bye Bye Birdie” again. The production will leave you smiling, laughing and clapping for more!

sequencing of events to music. For those of us who work in the industry, we follow Michael Mann as he innovatively tells his stories visually, mixing film and HD technology. In Collateral (2004), starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, he used HD cameras (rather than film) for the night scenes, which enabled him to use the natural and artificial lights of night. For Public Enemies, he and cinematographer Dante Spinotti ASC, used Sony F23 cameras (digital not film) for the surreal look of the past. Michael Mann’s style, presenting glimpses of the characters as the story moves forward so that by the end, one has empathy for each whether they’re the good guys or the bad, is the highlight of Public Enemies. About halfway through the depression (early 1930’s) John Dillinger robbed banks in the Midwest, most in Chicago. As a Robin Hood style criminal, he had the support of the average man in that many held banks responsible for the economic condition of the country at that time. J. Edgar Hoover, the director of the struggling Bureau of Investigation (later to become the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI), took every advantage to gain press for his battles with the governmental bureaucracy as he constantly lobbied Congress for more legislative power, finances, and manpower to fight the escalation of organized crime. Seizing the opportunity for the big push at a press conference to get what he wanted, fashions the idea of declaring

John Dillinger the first “Public Enemy Number One”, with an all out campaign for his capture! Hoover chooses Melvin Purvis, one of his agents with ideas of using science, technology, and psychological profiling, to head the taskforce with the specific directive of: capture John Dillinger. The chase is on in Public Enemies with actual locations of that time. As a born and raised Chicagoan, the historic landmarks, including the famous Biograph Theatre where Dillinger met his end (and where I attended movies growing up!), gives a look and feel to the film that takes one back to that time in history, when things weren’t always what they seemed! Starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Billy Crudup, Channing Tatum, Stephen Lang. Directed by Michael Mann; written by Ronan Bennett & Michael Mann; Universal Pictures release; Rated R for gangster violence and some language; Runtime: 140 minutes.

“Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”, gives us 2 new characters, in 3-D! Review by Stan Robinson

The story of the lovable characters of friends, including Manny, Sid, and

when to their rescue comes an inhabitant of the underworld, a mysterious one-eyed weasel named Buck, whose sole mission is hunting dinosaurs! This installment in the continuing Ice Age saga is a delight for the whole family and the 3-D technology doesn’t get in the way of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed Buck, voiced by Simon Pegg. Perhaps in the next chapter they’ll go back to the underworld, so that I can find out how Buck is getting on in his world. Now I’m hooked on the Ice Age friends, thanks Buck! Voices include Queen Latifah ... Ellie, Denis Leary... Diego, John Leguizamo... Sid, Ray Romano... Manny, Chris Wedge... Scrat, and Simon Pegg… Buck. Directed by Carlos Saldanha & Mike Thurmeier; Twentieth Century Fox release; Rated PG for some mild rude humor and peril. Runtime: 94 minutes.

Diego continues as they meet the next aspect of life on Earth before humans, dinosaurs! We each have our favorites of the characters, mine is Scrat. His episodes of the neverending pursuit of acorns and used as bridges between sequences, is a special treat in the latest adventure, he finds a possible romance with a female sabre-toothed squirrel named Scratte! Life is changing after “The Meltdown” for the Ice Age inhabitants. Manny and Ellie are expecting a baby. Diego, feeling he’s losing the prowess of a ‘big cat’ contemplates leaving the comforts of home to explore the wild. And Sid, keying off the joy and excitement of Manny and Ellie, begins to wish for a family of his own. While out one usual day, Sid finds dinosaur eggs, which takes him to a strange underworld. With Sid missing, his herd set out to find him in the underground world of dinosaurs, carnivorous vegetation, and a host of other strange occurrences. They’re over matched and about to perish

of the issues of today through the life experiences of the various characters that interact with Boris. And as with most Woody Allen films, we find a lot of ourselves in each of the characters, as we examine our own views of the world around us! Starring Larry David, Evan Rachel Wood, Adam Brooks, Lyle Kanouse, Michael McKean, Patricia Clarkson, and Ed Begley Jr. Written & directed by Woody Allen; Sony Pictures Classics release; Rated PG-13 for sexual situations including dialogue, brief nude images and thematic material; Runtime: 92 minutes.

“Whatever Works”, examines life with extremes! Review by Stan Robinson

It’s often said that to appreciate a Woody Allen film one has to be a bit ‘quirky’ and a little off-center, which is how Allen is often described. His film characters, whether he’s starring as one or just directing, present extreme personality types with the subject matter of his films firmly grounded in an aspect of living life. And yes, I’m a huge admirer of Woody Allen’s films, my recent favorite Scoop (2006) featured Allen as an aging magician helping a young journalist solve a mystery. In this ‘slice of life’ film, written and directed by Woody Allen, we drop in on Boris (Larry David) who incidentally has the similar candor of Allen. He’s a physicist who’s spent way too much time in the lab. He’s cynical, eccentric, fancies himself a genius, and purports that he’s the one with all the answers to solving the ills of mankind as well as living life! At 60 plus he decides that he’s had enough of the upscale lifestyle and makes a change. He has abandoned his upper class life for the “Greenwich Village” style carefree world. When a young, homeless girl from the south asks him for a meal as he enters his apartment, it sets the stage for a series of interactions; including his regular meets with a group of friends at a sidewalk café, the girl’s boyfriend who comes to NY looking for her, the girl’s parents who are separated with each arriving in NY not knowing the other is in town, and Boris is right in the middle of it all! Whatever Works presents the diverse views June 25th - July 1st, 2009

SPORTSMAN’S

For the Love of Wine By Nathan Mears

Sparkling wine……..when was the last time you had a glass? Sparkling wines are some of the most food friendly and overlooked wines in America. In my mind, two of the biggest reason we as Americans don’t drink “sparkling” wines are as follows: 1.) Hangovers caused by consuming copious amount of poorly made, overly sweet bubbles in our youth. 2.) Weddings, or more specifically, wedding cake. While I hope the first reason should require no explanation to those of us afflicted with such a memory, the second may have many scratching their heads, so I will elaborate. Wedding cake is quite possibly the sweetest confection on earth as sweet foods make dry wines stronger, you might even say aggressive. The bubbles in sparkling wine have a similar effect, making the acidity and dryness of the wines more pronounced. Traditional wedding reception protocol goes something like this: Guests receive a glass of bubbly, a toast to the bride and groom, ‘Cheers!’ Next we encounter the problem. You are handed a piece of wedding cake, dutifully take a bite, revisit your bubbly and out comes the old “bitter beer face!” Suddenly you don’t like sparkling wine. It is time to put these experiences behind you and jump back in the pool. The world has too many lovely sparkling wines for you to enjoy. Many of them are easy on your wallet and on you the next day. Spanish Cava for example can be very soft and easy to drink. Cava has a very distinct, slightly earthy nose. In Italy they

have Prosecco which is both the name of the wine and the grape. Prosseco was built for us here in the desert, wickedly refreshing and lightly fruity with styles ranging from off dry to dry. In the “New World” wine regions you find Champagne inspired bubbles. In South Africa, Australia and the U.S.A., sparkling tend to be based on the traditional Champagne grapes Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These wines come in a range of styles from sweet to bone dry, and show more fruit characters than their French counterpart.

Celebrating life, love and happiness is so very important – and the dining experience is an ideal occasion to slow down and embrace those perfect, endless moments. Whether casual and relaxed or extravagance to the fullest, all that really matters are the simple things that will set the mood and scene for a wonderful evening you’ll never forget.

Be young and have fun. Playfulness is happiness. Feed eachother some delicious finger food. This one’s been proven time and time again. Grapes, strawberries, you name it. Afterall, we really are just a bunch of kids at heart.

Select exotic cuisine. Step outside the box and select something that you and your partner have never tried. Exploring new food can be amusing, and it keeps the conversation on the luxurious, well-deserved cuisine and away from everyday routine topics like work or the weather.

Be comfortable. Dress to impress but be absolutely sure to wear something comfortable before you sit down to dine. A happy, care-free, comfortable mood is what matters most!

Turn off your cell phone and forget the rest of the world. Make an effort to get far away from life’s hectic “oncall” pace - and start enjoying more of life’s timeless, precious moments. Take your time. Eat like Royalty requesting 3 and 4-course gourmet, chef-inspired meals. The night is young, so try a multitude of different entrees. We all need a little variety in life. Keep your dining light and delicious. A heavy meal will douse the romantic flames in a hurry. Enjoy sev-

Dessert…. Have it. Eat it. Enjoy it. Live a little. Request absolutely sinful desserts from time to time. On this day, dessert indulgence is key - and more than ok.

Make fun of life – and yourself. Leave your inhibitions elsewhere. Talk, tell stories, inquire, ask questions, poke fun, play games and open up as much as possible. We’re all beautiful creations – and we’re all a little weird. Tease, tempt and get to know one another. Laugh at the world we live in and make fun of yourself in the process. Humor is and always will be life’s most powerful tool. Dining out is indeed the perfect, luxurious, playful time for you to be happy, love life and enjoy yourselves. No matter the occasion, get back to the basics and break free from the same old routine.

DJ THEO Name Theo (real name: Theo Pisani) Web Site(s): www.djtheo.net, www. myspace.com/deejaytheo, www. nervousnyc.com Contact Email: emilyemilytan@aol. com Where: (various venues, including: Neptune Beach Club in the Hamptons-NY; M2 in New York City; Cielo in New York City; Pacha in New York City; Nocturnal in Miami; Harrah’s Pool in Atlantic City; Island in Long Island City; and others.) How did you get started in the industry? I started deejaying at college radio. What’s the biggest change you have seen in the DJ industry in the last 5 years? Producers being booked (as deejays) who don’t have experience as a deejay.

18

June 25th - July 1st, 2009

What do you do that differentiates you from other quality DJs? I have continuous residencies and long sets. I think it’s helped me read a crowd quickly and has helped my performance. What’s the most gratifying thing that ever happened to you as a DJ? I always wanted to have something I’ve done be documented in the illustrious Billboard Magazine. My last compilation (Summer Clubbing 2) made it to Billboard’s Heatseekers chart last summer. Tell us a secret about yourself or your show: After a gig, whether it’s 5am or 7am, I will go to Gray’s Papaya and get their infamous hot dog recession special. What advice would you give someone who wants to be a performance-level DJ? Work hard, support the venues you want to work in and never undercut another deejay to get a job nor tell an owner or

AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

promoter that you will do it cheaper; you’ll only make an enemy and cheapen yourself as a product. What’s the biggest misconception people have about DJs? That it’s so glamorous. If you want to be a good DJ, there’s a lot of hard work that goes into it and a lot of money invested into doing it. What do you think will happen to your music in the next 2 years? Electronic music as a whole will only get stronger on the underground level because the radio outlets are getting slimmer, which means more people will have to spend more of their time finding it. Similar to the punk movement of the late seventies/ early eighties. It was tough to find, but once you found it, it was worth more. What will people hear when they listen to your music? Hopefully, something that will excite them. If there were a “Golden Rule” for being a DJ, what would it be? Bring headphones. Do you have any CDs out that we can buy? Nervous Nitelife: Summer Clubbing 3 (Nervous Records), released 7/7/2009. Your favorite place to perform in the city? Hmm, as for New York City, Cielo has a small, tight-knit family type of vibe. The soundsystem is among the best in New York.

If you could change one thing about the DJ-Club scene in town, what would it be? Wish there were more venues to help support all the forms of dance music. Please take a few sentences and promote yourself in any way that the questions did not cover. Lie, brag, make claims you can’t possibly support, give shameless plugs, tell us what preferred groupies we should order for you… You know, the usual. The venue I am at in the Hamptons (Neptune Beach Club) is the longest running “house music” residency in America at 14 years. It took a long time to build and now we have a consistent weekly house party that last 8+ hours every Saturday of the summer. The venue has now housed super talents like Erick Morillo, Danny Tenaglia, Jonathan Peters, Victor Calderone and more. You don’t always get a chance to be a part of starting a movement in an area. I was hired to spin “party music” 14 years ago and convinced the owners to go in this direction. I might not always get paid so well there, but the satisfaction of having starting the party at Neptune Beach Club eases the pain.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@ azweeklymagazine.com. “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events. Reviews, news and red, white and blues is what the Night Owls have for you this week. What was one of the best concerts I’ve seen over the last couple years and what was one of the biggest disappointments? For that, plus a couple of cool Fourth of July items and more keep reading to find out what happened, what’s happening and what will happen in the Valley. Following us on Twitter yet? @bdiggs and @myFEmy. Xavier Rudd: Australian musician Xavier Rudd came to the Marquee Theatre last week and put on one of the best shows that I’ve seen in the past year. Rudd is an amazing musician and has mainly performed solo in the past (by solo, I mean no bassist, drummer, guitar player or any other on stage instrumentalist), but this time around he did have a bassist and drummer playing with him. Backbeat or not, Rudd is basically a one man band. Set up behind his famous didgeridoos (those long Australian flute like instruments), he plays those along with slide guitar, banjo, traditional guitar and a variety of percussion instruments. At the Marquee, which slowly became more crowded as the night went on, he was energetic, funny and his music, which combines elements of rock, blues, indigenous music and psychedelic was top notch. With all that said and Rudd’s amazing performance, one of the elements that made the night was the crowd itself. Arizona is not known for its overly energetic or passionate crowds, but at Rudd’s show the crowd was off the hook. They were lively, dancing and screaming and shouting. All in all, an excellent show (and I heard he rocked in both Flagstaff and Tucson too) so make sure you keep him on your “to-see” list for next time. For more info visit xavierrudd.com. Eric Clapton: I want to preface this by saying Eric Clapton is a “top three” musician favorite of mine. With that preface, I’d also like to say that his recent show at jobbing.com arena was one of the worst performances that I’ve seen from him. I went in with high hopes, had it marked on my calendar for months and even took a ½ day from work to “prep” myself. So I’ve seen Clapton four or five times in my life before this, and this performance/tour –with Steve Winwood—had a “we are doing this to make money” feel. Throughout the show, Clapton and Winwood shared the stage taking turns doing songs, supporting each other and then collaborating closely on duets (like an acoustic “Layla” which was the highlight of my night). Of course, they played some of their “Blind Faith” songs together which was pretty cool. However, the show felt very forced. I don’t believe that either singer said one word to the audience or even acknowledged their presence, which left the crowd feeling a bit alienated. All in all, they played some great songs, did their job and just that. They didn’t do anything overly exciting or

didn’t push the envelope. While I like Winwood, I think Clapton plays when he is challenged with something new and exciting (something he isn’t with Winwood who he’s played with for 40 years). Last time he was in town with Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall on guitars, Clapton was clearly having fun doing something with not as familiar band members. I’ll be there next time he comes around, but hopefully it is something that pushes the envelope a bit more where he can have fun. Fourth of July: If you don’t have any plans to celebrate the U.S.A.’s 233rd birthday, here are my top five Valley Fourth of July events that offer fun, finger-licking-good barbeque, and spectacular firework displays: Tempe 4th – The fireworks never disappoint at Tempe Town Lake. Tickets will be $8.00 at the gate or $15.00 for two, and children under 12 years old are free. The event is scheduled from 4 – 11 p.m., but with Mill Avenue within reasonable walking distance you can party before and after the display. www.tempe4th.com Fabulous Phoenix Fourth – nearly 25 years running, Phoenix’s Steele Indian School Park is always drawing big crowds for its legendary fireworks display. The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m., but if you are planning on indulging you can stay at the nearby Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix/Midtown for a low $59 dollar rate. www.phoenix.gov 4th of July Great American Picnic – if you’re looking to squeeze in a mini-vacay, then you’ll love The Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa’s old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration. You can enjoy a resort style barbecue with music via a live DJ, and military vehicles and F-16s sightings provided by Luke Air Force Base, and a fireworks display starting at 9 p.m. Plus, the resort is offering a smoking deal on room packages, visit www.wigwamresort.com for details. 7UP Fireworks Spectacular – Chandler’s refreshing and fun way to celebrate America’s birthday. The event features many family friendly activities including live music, a bike parade, classic cars on display, and a 35-foot water slide. Best of all admission is free and parking is only $5, check out www.chandleraz.gov for more info. Fireworks Extravaganza – the name says it all. Harold’s Cave Creek Corral is hosting this Independence Day blow out which will feature Americana music that’s a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll from local band Young Country and EastonAshe. Partygoers will also enjoy a barbeque, drink specials, fun kids activities, and of course fireworks. www.haroldscorral.com Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

Day or Night – The W Delivers Thursday’s the day this summer, as The W Scottsdale Hotel will be hosting laid-back evening swim parties with live acoustic music, special drink prices and a relaxed dress code sure to inspire the majority crowd to kick back and feel right at home. With gorgeous scenery and plenty to see, the sights and sounds promise to deliver a poolside evening to please. Once through the Living Room lobby bar, partiers and pool-goers can make their way up the extra-wide, glass-lined staircase to the beautiful, uplifting Shade and Sunset Beach bars. With the summer heat in full effect, it’s quite inviting to swing by in shorts, tank-top and flip flops, kick

your feet in the pool and take it all in. The scene at The W Scottsdale Hotel continues to set trends, as it is now showing movies every Wednesday night by the pool and hosting live acoustic concerts appropriatelytitled “Sunset Sessions” every Sunday throughout summer. The W joins the Wyndham Hotel in downtown Phoenix as one of the only clubs hosting nighttime pool parties. The Wyndham hosts Saturday and Sunday evening parties called Star Swim and Adult Swim, respectively. Guests whom wish to come enjoy the beautiful, unique setting can relax and unwind in overly-cozy chaise lounges (poolside mini beach) and even oddly enough enjoy mood-lifting beats while listening underwater. Day or night, each poolside gathering is certainly something unique, bringing a new kind of fun to the valley this summer.

Every year, kids in North America spend close to half a billion dollars on chewing gum. A goldfish has a memory span of about 3 seconds. If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. If you have three quarters, four dimes, and four pennies, you have $1.19. You also have the largest amount of money in coins without being able to make change for a dollar. In ‘Silent Movie,’ mime Marcel Marceau is the only person who has a speaking role. Golf is indeed one of the greatest games on earth. It can be however, somewhat frustrating at times, to say the very least. To master the craft takes time, patience, dedication and a true passion for the game. And perhaps most importantly, a good sense of humor….

Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle. “I wish I could play my normal game....just once.”

The best wood in most golfer’s bags is the pencil. I play in the low 80’s. If it’s any hotter than that, I won’t play.

Golf! You hit down to make the ball go up. You swing left and the ball goes right. The lowest score wins. And on top of that, the winner buys the drinks.

In golf, some people tend to get confused with all the numbers...they shoot a “six”, yell “fore” and write “five”. Golf is harder than baseball, in golf you have to play your foul balls.

Home Runs, Base Hits and Icy Hot Jockstraps With such a long season, life in the majors has its fair share of cruel but funny pranks played on fellow teammates. Here are some of the classics recalled by a few players around the league.

Wes Helms, Florida Marlins “This year in spring training when I was with the Phillies, they told Kyle June 25th - July 1st, 2009

Kendrick that he got traded to the Japanese league for the famous hotdog eater. They wrote up an original contract with the general manager and had his jersey made

Eric Byrnes, Arizona Diamondbacks “Adam Piatt came back to play us in Oakland when I was there. Well needless to say some of the guys there wanted to get him back for practical jokes he’s played on them. You’ve heard of people “Icy Hot-ing” the jockstrap or the under wear, well we did that to his regular underwear and draped his entire suit with the Icy Hot stuff. Halfway to the airport he started profusely sweating and he couldn’t figure out why. He later said it was the most miserable plane ride ever.”

and everything made up in Japanese. They had his agent in on it, the media in on it, even his mom in on it. He truly thought he was traded and the look on his face—I mean you can’t—that’s something I’ll always remember. Everybody held their face for a good 15 minutes.” Torii Hunter, Los Angeles Angels “When I was with the Twins, David Ortiz, ‘Big Papi’, was with us and Corey Koskie put peanut butter in his underwear. So David got out of the shower and he’s talking and laughing. Everybody’s talking to him but we

knew that peanut butter was in his underwear. Then he put his pants on, put his shirt on, put his shoes on, walked out about 10 yards and then felt something funny and started getting upset and screaming at everybody, ‘Who put peanut butter in my underwear? What’s in my underwear?’ Truly hilarious it was a classic moment indeed.” Luis Gonzalez, Florida Marlins “In Tampa I filled a jelly donut with mustard. We were all waiting for someone to eat that particular one. Then sure enough some clubhouse guy picked it up and ate it. He asked another clubhouse guy to call over to the donut shop because he thought one of the guys had spiked the donut. He was a mess and ready to raise hell.”

Kevin Youkilis, Boston Red Sox “Trot Nixon super glued my suitcase one time. I couldn’t open it. We were in Texas and he locked my bag and super glued it. I had to get one of the guys to come up there and cut it open. It was a mess. I had to get a whole new bag. I was furious man, but all in all, it was actually quite funny.”

What is the difference between Leather, Phenolic and Carbon Fiber Tips on a Break Cue? Leather tips are usually very hard, however they still compress to some degree. When this occurs, some percentage of your power is lost which results in slower cue ball speed to the rack. This can affect the spread and the potential for not pocketing a ball. The current trend in Break Cue and Jump Cue technology is the use of Phenolic resins or Carbon Fiber, or a combination of both in ferrules and tips. These materials virtually eliminate any tip compression like leather which results in maximum ball speed to the rack. The great thing about these materials is the player’s ability to control the break speed and the spread. This can be critical,

depending on who you are playing and what you can afford to give up on the table. There is also a downside for some players. With Phenolic or Carbon Fiber, you must hit the cue ball dead center. If you don’t, a miscue is a certainty. Some players don’t like this, as using English on the break shot is an important part of their game. It is, as with your playing cue, a matter of personal preference. Doing what is best for you is the soundest advice I can give. The final option is to find a tip with a leather/resin combination, but those are slim pickins. Stop by your local Billiard Store and ask for a demonstration so you can test ALL the options before buying. Until next time, remember… the player with the most weapons in their bag has the best chance of winning the battle.

The Art of Collecting

1. It satisfies the soul. 2. They have a friend or family member who encouraged them.

Do you currently have a personal collection you’re passionate about? If not, you may want to reconsider. Many people around the world collect a variety of things, while others ponder why. Some just can’t get enough of a particular item which captivates the mind, while others just can’t seem to understand the motivation behind such a truly unique, yet sometimes strange science. All walks of life are often committed to the art of collecting – whether young children, teenagers, stay at home moms, busy professionals, even grandparents. Each has their own reasons as to why they began their collection and why it has remained an extremely enjoyable hobby. Following are some of the primary reasons people buy, collect and cherish certain items, whether particularly rare or simply fun.

3. They like the feeling each addition gives them. 4. Collected items make great conversation pieces. 5. Most everyone loves something in particular, to the fullest. 6. Investment purposes. 7. It’s just a lot of fun!! Collecting is a great hobby because it can be different, completely unique for everyone. Each found item has its own ‘story.’ In the process of collecting, you continue to learn. As you build any collection, you apply skills in identifying, selecting, discriminating, evaluating, classifying and arranging items. Those who view collecting as trivial or a waste of time, miss the connections

that it has to life skills and occupations. Scientists also collect things; they gather information, data, and samples. Museums and libraries are collections. Many people make their livelihoods by collecting and disposing items. In fact, all of us go through our lives collecting and discarding things around us. So… from stamps and butterflies to boats and cars, the art of collecting is

Tips for reducing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: -Get adequate, regular and consistent amounts of sleep each night. -Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and drink plenty of water throughout each day. -Exercise regularly. -Learn better ways to relax including

Give Chronic Fatigue the Boot with a Chronic Healthy Lifestyle

Common Causes of chronic fatigue symptoms

Chronic fatigue symptoms are different from drowsiness. In general, drowsiness is feeling the need to sleep, while fatigue is a lack of energy and motivation. Drowsiness and apathy (a feeling of indifference or not caring about what happens) can be symptoms of fatigue. Fatigue is a feeling of weariness, tiredness, or lack of energy. Fatigue can be a normal and important response to physical exertion, emotional stress, boredom, or lack of sleep. However, it can also be a nonspecific sign of a more serious psychological or physical disorder. When fatigue is not relieved by enough sleep, good nutrition, or a low-stress environment, it should be evaluated by your doctor. Because fatigue is a common complaint, sometimes a potentially serious cause may be overlooked.

34

The pattern of chronic fatigue symptoms may help your doctor determine its underlying cause. For example, if you wake up in the morning rested but rapidly develop fatigue with activity, you may have an ongoing physical condition like an underactive thyroid. On the other hand, if you wake up with a low level of energy and have fatigue that lasts throughout the day, you may be depressed. June 25th - July 1st, 2009

yoga or meditation. -Maintain a reasonable work and personal schedule. -Change your stressful circumstances if possible. (For example, switch jobs or take a vacation, even deal directly with a problem in a relationship.) -Consider a natural remedy.

There are many possible physical and psychological causes of chronic fatigue symptoms. Some of the more common are: -Anemia (including iron deficiency anemia) -Sleep disorders like ongoing insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, or narcolepsy -Ongoing pain -An allergy that leads to hay fever or asthma -An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) -Use of alcohol or illegal drugs like cocaine, especially with regular use -Depression or grief Chronic fatigue symptoms can also accompany the following illnesses: -Infection, especially one that takes a long time to recover from or treat, like bacterial endocarditis (infection of the heart muscle or valves), parasitic infections, AIDS, tuberculosis, and mononucleosis, congestive heart failure, diabetes, kidney disease, addison’s disease, anorexia, malnutrition, cancer. Certain medications may also cause drowsiness or fatigue including antihistamines for allergies, blood pressure medicines, sleeping pills, steroids and diuretics.

Dodge Nitro

Pictures and Review by Chad Haire The Dodge Nitro is a vehicle that gets lots of attention. Few realize that underneath are the mechanicals of a Jeep Liberty. Well, almost. The Jeep has low-range gearing for serious offroad use. The Nitro is offered with part-time 4-wheel drive, but with no low gears. Since the front bumper has limited ground clearance, it’s just as well. An all-wheel drive system for street pavement is available too. Either way, the Nitro has limitations for off-road use. On the street, the ride is firm, but still comfortable. It is still a Jeep, not a

sports car, so taking corners at high speeds isn’t going to happen. The base engine has 210 horsepower, but the bigger 260 horse motor would be my pick. The cabin has too much

Heavy metal institution Megadeth have announced Endgame as the title of their twelfth studio album. The album is expected to be released in September. Endgame is being produced by Andy Sneap and Dave Mustaine. Sneap also manned the boards for 2007’s United Abominations. Endgame boasts the technicality, ferocity and snarl that’s synonymous with Megadeth and Mustaine. In short, it’s the Megadeth record that fans of classics like So Far…So Good…So What? and Rust in Peace have been chomping at the bit for. June 25th - July 1st, 2009

R&B legend and dance sensation Ginuwine will release his 6th CD, A Man’s Thought’s on June 23rd. The CD features the new Top 10 Billboard R&B hit, “Last Chance,” which was released in March amid controversy about the Juwan Lee directed video clip. The CD also features the kinetic dance single, “Get Involved,” the first collaboration featuring Ginuwine, Timbaland and Missy Elliot in nearly 8 years. The trio all grew up together musically having first collaborated on Ginuwine’s 1996 debut, The Bachelor. “It feels great to have the original team reunited. The fans have always loved us together and now we’re back,” commented Ginuwine. Another event on the CD is “Bridge To Love” Ginuwine’s slow jam duet with Pop/R&B Princess, Brandy. It marks their first musical pairing despite the parallel success they’ve enjoyed dominating the charts over the last decade.

A new Ronnie Earl CD, Living in the Light, has just been released. It’s his fifth recording for and his most deeply felt, intense and emotional album yet. Like his other albums, it offers a varied mix of blues, soul and gospel, all marked by his distinctive guitar style and the passionate conviction he brings to every note he plays. Living in the Light also features many surprises and deep pleasures - among them New England singer Dave Keller, who delivers two gospel influenced songs - the powerful opener “Love Love Love” and Bob Dylan’s “What Can I Do For You” - which also features a 10-piece choir from Earl’s Baptist Church.

Duke Robillard’s latest effort digs deep into the riotous, raunchy, rockin’ ‘40s and ‘50s R&B that helped launch rock and roll. The new CD, Stomp! The Blues Tonight is certainly different from anything else Robillard has recorded. The band, with long-term colleagues Doug James on baritone and tenor, and Rich Lataille on tenor and alto - makes sure that tunes like “Stomp the Blues Tonight,” “Do Me Right,” “Look and Don’t Touch,” “Tore Up” and “Playful Baby” roar out of your speakers. A rock solid rhythm section, and Bruce Bears’ inspired piano playing gives the tunes the lift they need.

Tiny Masters of Today released Skeletons earlier this month. Neither the name of the band nor the album really give much away; the pink background on the album cover might give a slight inkling that what’s inside might be of a punkish nature, so it might surprising to find out that the band is actually two kids from Brooklyn. They have taken tunes that are fairly straightforward and added a techno/punk edge to it which makes for some very interesting listening. Probably not adult material, but this is definitely one that the tweens should check out! Visit myspace.com/ tinymasters for more information.
