If you are like me you probably have great memories of the “Best Fest” celebrated in Prescott for three days in September of 2011 as part of Arizona’s Centennial Celebration. Now it is Prescott’s turn to celebrate a major historic milestone of our own – Prescott’s Sesquicentennial or 150th birthday. We all know that Prescott was the original Territorial Capital of Arizona dating back to a series of events in 1864 that include the naming of Prescott on May 30th. The City of Prescott will be kicking off our Sesquicentennial Celebration on May 30, 2014. The celebration will begin at 5:00 pm on Friday, May 30th with the reading of an official proclamation by Mayor Kuykendall followed by remarks from the Mayor and other elected officials accompanied by a period correct color guard and music on the north side of Courthouse Plaza. A 150 square foot cake (donated by Costco) will be cut and distributed to the public. The Sharlot Hall Museum will be hosting a “Territorial Dinner” that evening and a free concert will

He’ll perform hits from his 30-year discography, beginning with his eponymous 1982 debut and extending through 2012’s Tuskegee, a platinum-selling collection that features duets of his hits with a variety of artists. How many people have their trusted garage door repair company’s phone number saved in their phone? I mean, if they’re really good, you don’t need them…right? There are over 200 garage door repair companies in the Phoenix Valley and they all claim to be the best and the cheapest with the highest quality equipment. I did some research and talked to some “experts” to find out a solution to my squeaky and lopsided door.

$225. I asked each of the companies what the difference was between the two quotes and there wasn’t any. Some people just list to charge more I guess.

The first thing everyone told me was “DON’T DO IT YOURSELF!!!” It’s a very dangerous job and there is absolutely no need to end up in a hospital. I was also told that when people try to fix it themselves and then call a professional, the rate is typically 4 times as much. A quick $200 fix can turn into a $1000 fix because they have to undo what the homeowner tried to do. I called the BBB to check out some ratings and that narrowed my search quite a bit. Don’t settle for anything less than an A+ rating with the BBB. They have never steered me wrong, so why not trust them now? I also wanted to see who’s been in business the longest. 4 months of experience just doesn’t do it for me, but when they have over a dozen trucks and have been in business longer than 10 years, I feel like they’re doing something right. It came down to 3 different companies for me based on the criteria above. I had three different quotes with one of them telling me I needed a whole new door and opener. The other two told me that they could fix the tracks, add a little lubricant, tighten some screws and I would be as good as new. I believed this was the way to go, but one wanted to charge me $499 while the other was

The company that was honest and offered the same warranty but was over 50% less was A-Authentic Garage Doors. On top of it, they were available 24 hours a day to fix my garage, although I had it done at 4pm. They also offered me same day service and guaranteed their work.

I found out after the job was done that A-Authentic was tested on Dateline…. twice! They passed the honesty test with flying colors. They are also the exclusive garage door company for Rosie on the House, a trusted home improvement show for the past 25 years. They have won awards throughout the valley including a Super Service Award with Angie’s List. I asked Darrell, the owner of A-Authentic, what his policy was for his business and he started throwing back words like Integrity, Honesty and Reliable. It was nice to hear. I understand that people have choices when it comes to getting their garage doors fixed, and I would suggest you do your own research before you find the company that best fits your needs. In my experience, with the longevity of his company, the large number of trucks he has, and his awards and ratings with the BBB, I felt he was best for me. On top of that, the job was done right and I don’t anticipate calling him…or any other garage door company for a long time…or at least until my neighbor’s kid decides to back into it.

After auditioning Nigel 2,300 dancers for the Lythgoe 11th season, Nigel and Mary Murphy Lythgoe is fired up over Fox’s Wednesday summer staple, “So You Think You Can Dance.” A few weeks before its May 28 return, Lythgoe relaxes over coffee and toast with honey in a posh Manhattan restaurant and considers what’s new on the show that features the best dancing on television. “We have new talent, what these kids are bringing to it and new choreographers,” he says. This season will also feature dance crews, which viewers can vote for via Twitter, but they will not be part of the competition. “The competition is the competition,” he says. “This year it’s back to the single, individual dancer.” The judges remain the dynamic duo of Lythgoe and Mary Murphy, and the third alternates among those who have studied dance including Jenna Elfman, Misty Copeland and Tara Lipinski. “She’s really good at telling somebody they are really bad,” Lythgoe says of the skater. Irina Dvorovenko, a ballerina, has told hopefuls, “ ‘You have very bad feet. You are not a bad dancer. Your face is very ugly,’ ” Lythgoe says. She doesn’t mean your face is very ugly; she means you are not using it well.” Tony winner Billy Porter is also a guest judge, and Lythgoe is keen on having Broadway talent on the show. “I love performers as well,” he says. “ ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ is just as much about performing as dancing. ... I would never want it to be the best dancer. It is the favorite dancer.” Lythgoe, who describes himself as the original Billy Elliot, admits he never expected this show to hit. “I didn’t even think we would make it through the first season,” he says. A former Fox executive had the foresight to have him make a pilot, which Lythgoe says was so awful it will “be buried with my bones.” From that mess came the show, which ignited a passion for dancing. And dancing, as he says frequently, is all about passion.

hen you think about men’s fashion in the 1720s – for those of you pondering such unusual thoughts – what must strike first are the cuffs. The cuffs were outrageous. Sometimes they were folded back to the elbow. Other times, as John Malkovich models in his portrayal of Blackbeard on NBC’s “Crossbones,” airing Fridays, they fan off from his forearm and make him look as if he could take flight. The summer drama revolves around Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, in 1729. It’s the usual scurvy lot of raggedy-looking men, some in tattered uniforms, others in whatever finery they picked up in their travels. Costume designer Caroline Harris scouted around to ensure the accuracy of the costumes. “Historically, we have a decent idea of that, and we know what they wore on ships,” Harris says. “Pirates often came from other ships because life on the ocean ways were so brutal, so any chance to get away was an element of freedom. It was far more democratic than working under a captain on a ship.”

The Palms Theatre in Mesa, Arizona announces their 2014-2015 season beginning with the hilarious musical comedy Two By Two. With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Martin Charnin, this is a fresh retelling of the Biblical story of Noah. It seems that the building of the ark was only the first of Noah’s many daunting challenges in a journey that wasn’t always smooth sailing. By turns inspirational and hilarious, we discover that being chosen by God for great things does not necessarily simplify the daily demands made of a father and husband. It’s good fun from The Good Book and when the land has dried, man and beast alike are invited to go forth and prosper in a bright New World. ‘The German Doctor’

Mads Mikkelsen plays a horse dealer who leads a happy family life. But when a lord treats him unjustly, he raises an army and puts the country to fire and sword in order to have his rights restored. (PG - 122 minutes)

Alex Brendemühl plays a German doctor who meets an Argentinean family and follows them on a long desert road to a small town where the family will be starting a new life - not knowing that they are harboring one of the most dangerous criminals in the world. (PG-13 - 93 minutes)

Stan: Admittedly attracted to stories set in the 16th century with themes of legends relative to superior horse and swordsmen, the breathtaking settings of the Cévennes mountains in France and this story of one man against all odds to right the wrong of individual rights, is enhanced by this French language film as the fervor of commitment no matter what country, is reinforced within our own psyche relative to the will to succeed. Randy: Mads Mikkelsen truly is one of the greatest actors of our generation. While not a household name in America, fans of foreign film have grown to appreciate his gift of acting in a variety of roles. The story and historical legend may not be familiar with Hollywood’s movie going audience, which may hinder box office success here in the states. The film starts off slow and gradually gains steam. Those with a sense of historical adventure will be rewarded with an honorable performance and a worthwhile experience.

Stan: At the onset, ‘The German Doctor’ easily and quite effectively leads us down the familiar path of a WWII based story on true events as the English subtitled filmheightens our expectations of hope as we attach our emotionally stimulated alliances with the family depicted. As the actions of ‘The Doctor’ become more apparent, we, as well the family, are lead down that ‘primrose’ path for an intriguing psychological thriller. Randy: History and WWII buffs may enjoy the premised behind this dramatic thriller. As seen time and time again, a cast of professionals manage to elevate an otherwise bland retelling of an otherwise intriguing story. There are no major flaws with this one, but other than the incredible true story of such a heinous figure, there is nothing particularly memorable either.

Emma Roberts plays a young woman who is torn between an illicit flirtation with her soccer coach (James Franco) and an unrequited crush on a sweet stoner (Jack Kilmer). (R - 98 minutes) Randy: While not groundbreaking to the genre of teen angst, Coppola does manage to create an experience where you feel a part of the character’s lives. You may not always actually “feel” for them, but you will become involved in the story. Although, it does feel as if these stories have been told before by teen film “shock” director Larry Clark. A so-so film examining today’s youth. Joseph: “Palo Alto” accommodates just about every annoyingly trivial reason a teenager could possibly have for feeling as though their life is one big ball of suffering. Writer/ director Gia Coppola’s vision is competent if not derivative but the complete lack of focus and frivolous nature of it all make for one exceptionally boring exercise in ensemble insanity.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director Gia Coppola (‘Palo Alto’) By Joseph J. Airdo “[James Franco and I] got introduced at a party by my mom. I had just finished college as photography major. I sent him my photographs and we wanted to work together in some way. He said that he had this idea of making his book into a feature film and he thought that it would be a good fit [for me]. I really loved his book when I read it and was excited by the opportunity because filmmaking felt like an extension of photography. “What originally drew me to these stories was that they felt very realistic.

The depictions of the emotions of that age were really raw and realistic and the dialogue was really spot-on. I had just finished college so I had enough of a separation to understand my awkward teenage years a little bit better whereas at the time it just felt really painful. “In order for me to understand the characters and be helpful to my actors, I really had to dig deep within myself to figure out why the characters were acting the way they were. I feel like we are all human beings and we are all very complex.

Nothing is black and white so I tried to portray people that way. “There are definitely some dark stories in [James Franco’s] book. I didn’t necessarily experience some of those issues myself but I knew that that stuff was going on. I felt like my job, as a creative person was to find a way to make that work within my comfort zone because these are important stories to tell. I hope that when people watch this movie they can connect to the emotions and maybe feel less alone.” - Gia Coppola

Driver gets wrecked, becomes overwhelmed with fury and races towards the driver deemed responsible. It’s a fact of life in the highstakes world of stock car racing and comes with a long history of intense feuds, both on and off the track. Let’s take a look at some of the most notorious beefs and battles the sport of racing has seen throughout the years. Those under the millions of watchful eyes fans eagerly follow with mega doses of fiery interest and opinion. Enter….

GORDON VS. KENSETH

RACE! SECTION

FIERY FEUDS TO REV UP YOUR RACING MOOD! March 26th 2006 Tensions always seem to run high in Bristol, and the March 2006 event ignited the tempers of two generally even-keeled champions: Matt Kenseth (right) and Jeff Gordon (left). Leading with five laps remaining, Kenseth was knocked out of the way by former teammate Kurt Busch, then took out Gordon, who showed his frustration postrace by shoving Kenseth until officials intervened. “I’m sure he didn’t mean it and all that stuff, but I wasn’t happy about it,” Gordon said.

BMW X-1 SUV Test & Photo by Chad Haire Having to pick between a sports sedan and a more practical SUV can be a problem, but not with the BMW X-1. This vehicle can fulfill the duties of both. With large storage capacity, high-ground clearance, and strong engines, the X-1 has the capability for that dirt-road adventure or weekend camping trip--even more so if you order the all-wheel drive option. Most of the mechanical parts are borrowed from BMW sport sedans & coupes, so the steering, handling, and brake performance is about the same. I took this ride on the tight twisty roads in northern Arizona and it stayed glued to the road. Under the hood is a tiny 2.0 liter four-cylinder, but with twin turbos it cranks 240 horsepower. It’s hooked to a slick 8-speed automatic. I saw 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. Gas mileage after 700 miles on the clock was 27 mpg. For $8K more, a powerful 300 horse engine with AWD is offered. I didn’t care for the lousy run-flat tires. They are too stiff, and destroy ride comfort--also cost about $2K to replace. BMW doesn’t provide a spare tire, but you can special order a compact one with jack for a hefty $678. None of these prices are cheap, but the BMW has never been a cheap car.

D-backs & Paul Goldschmidt Announce Unique Program to Benefit “Goldy’s Fund 4 Kids” The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt have teamed up to launch a “Bleacher Creature” program that will raise money to benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital through Paul Goldschmidt’s new fund, Goldy’s Fund 4 Kids. “It’s just a natural fit,” said Goldschmidt about the partnership. “My wife, Amy, and I have had the opportunity to volunteer over at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and see a lot of the needs over there. It’s a very worthy cause. There are a lot of families with kids there that can use the help, and with them being a partner of the D-backs, it was just a win-win for everyone. Plus, the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation does so many great things in the community, so working with them means a great partner and a great opportunity. I’m just glad to be a small part of it and try to help out as much as I can.”

The Bleacher Creature showcases Goldschmidt in the D-backs Home (White) Uniform and starting today, fans can purchase the Bleacher Creature plush doll for $44 (Goldschmidt’s uniform number) at dbacks.com/ goldyfund or at D-backs home games at Season Ticket Headquarters (Section 111). Sales from the Bleacher Creature will benefit Goldy’s Fund 4 Kids, which works closely with Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Paul and his wife Amy frequently visit patients and families at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and are seeking to raise $100,000 to benefit PCH through the Bleacher Creature program and Goldy’s Fund 4 Kids. Last year, a limited edition Goldschmidt print was sold during the annual FOX Sports Arizona broadcast auction and raised $100,000 for the hospital. BEER AND BURGERS Occasionally we like to look at pairing food and beer. We always talk about some interesting and even exotic pairings. One thing we don’t always discuss is the traditional beer and burger. There are some amazing burger places out there and many of them have just come to Arizona in the last few years. Since both beer and burgers have achieved a new found respect recently, what better time to cover this topic? While everybody may think they know the history of the hamburger, few realize that its ancestry actually dates back to the Thirteenth Century and Genghis Khan and his “Golden Horde” or the Mongols, as we know them. While they were off conquering two thirds of the known world, they had very little time to stop, dismount and have a meal. So they would use lamb or mutton scrapings which they formed into a patty (the better to eat with one hand while riding) and slipped it under their saddle, where it would

tenderize. They would then eat the meat raw after battle. Several years later, Khan’s grandson went in to the family business and invaded Russia. The Russian people adopted the raw meat patties, added raw onion and egg to them and named them “Steak Tartare”…Tartar being the Russian word for Mongol. The Russians then brought this delicacy to Germany where it ended up in the town of Hamburg, where, lo and behold, somebody thought to cook it. The early Hamburg steaks were nothing like the burgers of today. They were tough cuts of meat, shredded and mixed with bread crumbs and onion. Sometime in the 19th Century, German immigrants to America threw this steak between a couple of slices of bread for convenience and the modern hamburger was born. So much for history, let’s get to modern times and figure out where beer comes in. Burgers have always been a staple of backyard barbecues, and so has

beer. It’s only natural that they are thought of together. Burgers are also easily prepared food for taverns with small kitchens, and they have always been popular with the working class. Beer, of course, has long been thought

of as a working class beverage. Beer and burgers have changed their image over the past decade. You can get gourmet bison, elk, or even ostrich burgers at many restaurants, just as you can get great beers at variety of places. Before we ruffle any feathers, we are aware that there are literally thousands of great burgers out there, and many of the restaurants that carry them serve great beer. No argument there. But let’s examine the modern phenomenon of burger bars, places where the signature dish is a gourmet burger, and carry world class beer to support it. There are probably places that did it earlier, but one of the first restaurants that came to our attention was Father’s Office in Santa Monica, CA. Described as one of the early gastropubs, restaurants where beer has a focus with the food, their signature dish is the office burger. Paired with any of their 36 draft beers, it’s a treat for anyone. In Arizona, one of the first gourmet burger places to open up was Delux at 32nd Street and Camelback in Phoenix. Delux offers 40 taps, all craft and import, along with two outstanding Continued On Page 30...

...Continued from page 28 burger choices, and they have added everything from gourmet hot dogs to sake marinated fish. Incidentally, Business Insider just named the Delux Burger as the top burger in the state of Arizona. Pretty high praise for a state that has so many great burgers. In short succession, great burger and beer places have opened up throughout the Valley, The Grind in Arcadia brings a unique coal fired oven experience along with some great local beers. Stockyards Restaurant on Washington in Phoenix offers complimentary sliders at happy hour, along with a killer burger on the regular menu, and a nice selection of craft beer. Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers in the Grayhawk Shopping Plaza in North Scottsdale and in Old Town Scottsdale

has a name that says it all. Look for a great selection of craft beer in a can and on tap there. The Garage Wine and Tap at 16th Street and Bethany Home has a great burger and your choice of beers like Anderson Valley Hop Ottin, Breckenridge Vanilla Porter or even import favorite Tripel Karmeliet to go with it. Hopdoddy on Scottsdale Road is excellent and also focuses on local craft beers. The list goes on and on. Wherever there are good burgers, there is beer. But what you want to really look for is the spots that offer amazing burgers and amazing beer. Then you will be enjoying yourself‌but by all means, avoid any place that asks you stick your burger under your seat cushion before you eat it. After all, you’re not a Mongol.

Solarte blossoms in the Yankee Stadium dirt

Yangervis Solarte

Coming into the 2014 season, the New York Yankees’ infield was supposed to be a mess. Mark Teixeira, Brian Roberts and Derek Jeter, all fighting age and injury issues, were supposed to be major question marks at first base, second base and shortstop. And third base was going to the black hole formerly manned by he-who-mustnever-be-mentioned. Well, after two months of play, Jeter and Tex have performed solidly. And while Roberts hasn’t exactly torn up the league, a career journeyman by the name of Yangervis Solarte has rendered the memory of the disgraced Alex Rodriguez nothing more than that. Full name: Yangervis Alfredo Solarte Birthplace: Valencia, Venezuela Birth date: July 7, 1987 Height/weight: 5 feet 11 inches/195 pounds Road to stardom: Attended Tomas Alba Edison High School in Valencia ... signed by the Minnesota Twins as a nondrafted free agent in 2005 ... played in the Twins (2006-11) and Texas Rangers (2012-13) systems, compiling a career minor-league average of .286 with 41 home runs

IT’S TV JUST FOR ME.

Through mid-May, the 26-yearold switch-hitter was leading the Bombers in batting (.336) and RBIs (22), to go with three home runs and a .412 on-base percentage. And the career utility infielder’s play at the hot corner, while not spectacular, has certainly been respectable enough to keep Yankee Stadium’s notorious Bleacher Creatures on mute. But are Yankee fans witnessing a late bloomer finally coming into his own or the coach that will surely turn back into a pumpkin as the summer wears on? At this stage, only the baseball gods know for sure. Solarte and the Yankees can be seen in action on the road against the Kansas City Royals Saturday, June 7, in a game airing on Fox. and a .336 on-base percentage ... signed a minor-league deal with the Yankees in January 2014 Career highlights: Made major league debut April 2 vs. Houston ... collected his first career hit and RBI in a 3-for-3 effort the following day ... hit first career home run April 17 vs. Tampa Bay Personal: Lives in Valencia ... uncle is former major league outfielder Roger Cedeno, who persuaded his agent to take on Solarte as a favor

“Dora the Explorer”

FRIDAY

gives SpongeBob his most cherished possession in “The Gift of Gum.”

The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! 9:30 a.m. on 8 KAET

My Fair Lady 5 p.m. on TCM

In this episode, a swimming lesson with a mother manatee and her son teaches Nick and Sally the importance of keeping them safe from boats in “Manatees and Mermaids.” After the Cat eats the two chocolates that the kids planned to give their moms, he takes them to the Cocoalicious Forest, where they learn how the sweet treat is made in “The Last Chocolate.”

Dora the Explorer 10 a.m. on NICK A new friend joins the cast when Dora hangs out with her cousin in “Meet Diego.” Diego works at an animal rescue center, can talk to wild animals, and has a bond with Baby Jaguar. When his feline pal gets stuck near a waterfall, Diego sets off to save her, making a menagerie of friends along the way.

It’s “loverly,” indeed. This winner of eight Oscars stars Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who catches the eye of Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison), professor of linguistics. He bets he can pass her off as a lady. Jeremy Brett (“Sherlock Holmes”) plays a love-struck beau; Stanley Holloway and Wilfrid Hyde-White also star in this 1964 version of Lerner and Loewe’s stage smash, inspired by George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion.”

SUNDAY The Librarian: Quest for the Spear 9:30 a.m. on TBS Library worker Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle) holds the fate of the world in his

hands in this adventure drama. His job is to guard a stash of treasures hidden under a large public library. One of them is a spear that’s in three pieces. When they’re put together, whoever possesses it will rule the world. It’s up to Carsen to prevent that from happening after one piece is stolen. Kyle MacLachlan and Olympia Dukakis also star. The two sequels follow.

MONDAY Son of Lassie 11 a.m. on TCM Lassie is a mama dog, and her young master, Joe (Peter Lawford), is all grown up in this 1945 sequel to 1943’s “Lassie Come Home.” When Joe leaves to fight in the Second World War, Laddie — Lassie’s son, in case you hadn’t guessed — follows him, and the two of them are shot down over Norway and must find their way home to England. Donald Crisp reprises his “Lassie Come Home” role; June Lockhart also stars.

Tuck Everlasting 1:30 p.m. on FAM

This episode finds the mischievous monkey at a radio station, where the Man With the Yellow Hat is picking up concert tickets he won. George accidentally locks himself in the DJ booth just as an important callin interview is about to start in “DJ George.”

WEDNESDAY Wild Kratts 7:30 a.m. on 8 KAET Leapin’ lizards! Make that flyin’ lizards! In “Flight of the Draco,” Martin and Chris set out to find out the secret of the Draco lizard’s ability to glide through the air. They encounter an evil fashion designer who wants to use the animals in her fall collection. The brothers use their newfound knowledge of gliding and gravity to thwart her plan.

Many consider Rosalind Russell’s performance in this 1958 comedy the best of her career. She earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the zany free spirit raising her orphaned nephew over the objections of her brother’s executor, who believes she’ll corrupt the boy with her wild ways. Forrest Tucker and Joanna Barnes also star.

A young woman must decide between love and life in this 2002 adaptation of the Natalie Babbitt novel. Alexis Bledel (“Gilmore Girls”) stars as Winnie Foster, a teenager who meets and falls in love with Jesse (Jonathan Jackson), not knowing the dangerous secret his family has. William Hurt, Sissy Spacek and Ben Kingsley co-star.

Wanting to have a great day, SpongeBob plans to do something with everyone he considers a friend. (Run, Squidward!) Unfortunately, they seem to be having bad days of their own, and SpongeBob takes the time to solve all their problems in “The Best Day Ever.” Then Patrick

Film legend Ida Lupino directed this delightful 1966 comedy about two teenagers (Hayley Mills, June Harding) who turn a convent school on its wimpled ear with their “scathingly brilliant” pranks, despite their forbidding mother superior (Rosalind Russell). It adds up to ideal family fun that is surprisingly uncloying and unexpectedly touching in its final scenes.
