GET RID OF THE FAT THAT YOUR GYM CAN’T
Courtesy As It Applies To Tae Kwon-Do and Business
Get Your 1st Treatment For Only $79
I started my training in the Martial Arts over 57 years ago. At first I trained in Shotokan Karate for 10 years, attaining the rank of 2nd Degree Black Belt. After watching a demo of Tae Kwon-Do by the 29th Infantry, Korean Tigers while in Vietnam, I switched arts and started all over again from the rank of white belt. I’m happy I had to start all over because as a white belt I had to study and learn and eventually embody the tenets of Tae Kwon-Do. These ‘tenets’ give the real meaning of Tae Kwon-Do training…they’re a statement of commitment, personal dedication and effort expended to the limits of our abilities towards our own personal and spiritual growth in addition to our physical health.
(limited time only)
480-359-5929
Scottsdale & Arrowhead • www.skinsultry.com
The first of these five tenets is courtesy. First, because in the world of Tae KwonDo, without respect and courtesy towards our instructors, fellow students, the world and ourselves, the student is empty. Without instilled courtesy…when faced with difficulties of training or techniques, personalities, inadequate facilities or any other obstacle, the student…without question…will fail. Why? Because courtesy is the internal flexibility that allows giving and understanding. It allows you to look at the world and see beyond yourself. This ‘internal flexibility’ is the true confidence that allows you to see the needs of others. If a person is blind to the needs of others, they are also blind to their own true needs… and success, achievement or victory is simply not possible in mental and spiritual darkness. This is just as true in business as it is in Tae Kwon-Do.
Bill Stilwell from the Management Institute, University of Wisconsin said: “So, to the degree you give others what they want, they will give you what you want.” I was amazed by the simplicity and basic truth of this statement. I’ve never forgotten it. I saw it as one of those rare precious moments that can change your life if you can truly grasp its meaning. I mean…this is the key to persuading, motivating and leading others. This is the key to getting people to do things for you. Oh, my…it seems so simple and maybe it is, if you really understand it. But, even if you know the rule you must also learn how to communicate the rule before it can actually work for you and not against you. For most, it works in reverse because they want to get what they want BEFORE they give others what they want. For example, a man says to himself, “I would give my wife roses if she would show me more affection.” That’s the problem…you must FIRST give others what they want… then they will GLADLY give you what you want. People have it twisted around. Learning how to communicate courtesy and to find out what people want is another important area of growth. Six important words that communicate courtesy are “I admit I made a mistake.” For a business to admit a mistake actually gives confidence to a customer, not the other way around. It gives the business permission to make things right. It takes courage and patience to find out what people want. You need the courage to ask the question with the four most important words in the English language. “What is your opinion?” Again, it builds confidence and you’ll get an answer you can use. Remember…this isn’t about getting, it’s about giving. And…along the way, you’ll become immensely successful. If you can get things done with people being courteous and joyful, helping them grow and helping them become more than they have ever been before, then you, in addition to receiving everything you have ever wanted, will also have one of the most treasured talents and abilities anyone can possess. And…the world needs more like you. -Mack Newton 8th Degree Black Belt Senior Master in the Global Tae Kwon-Do Federation International and Chairman of the World Technical Committee

They Don’t Even Know Me-They Could at Least Get to Know Me Before They Reject Me! We’re all guilty of it at some point. Whether it was to a person’s face, sitting safely behind a computer screen, or with the thoughts in our head, we’ve judged a person before really getting to know a person. I remember when I was in high school and shopping for formal dresses my mom would always go with me. There were so many times she would bring something to the dressing room and I would look at her and be like really mom that’s not even cute, but she would always respond the same way-Try it on! Looking back I can’t think of a dress that I wore to a formal that my mom DIDN’T pick out. Why? Because she always made me try everything on, even if I thought it looked bad on a hanger. The same goes when it comes to dating. Now, I understand that everyone has their morals and faith and those can’t be compromised, but can you look yourself in the mirror and that you’ve never said no to a person based on their looks, age, profession or income? Take success couple Michael and Nancy for example. Nancy had it in her head that she would only date someone five years older or five years younger than she, and she wasn’t going to budge. When browsing through profiles one day she came across Michael’s profile, she was intrigued by Michael and selected him. What she didn’t realize when she was picked her filtering options she didn’t put in an age group, Michael was 10 years older than her. Nancy contributes their relationship to fate. Before deciding against someone who has selected to meet you give them one shot. By joining a dating service you made the decision to make a change in your dating life; you weren’t meeting the right people. How can you expect to see a change when you’re not willing to adjust your expectations? You have to change your expectations and possibly make an adjustment to your “Perfect Mate CheckList” to actually find the relationship that you want, and when you do make that adjustment that person you thought wouldn’t live up to your ‘standards’ just might surpass them. On the other hand—maybe you keep hearing the word no because you’re not going after the right people. Again, you too have to make adjustments to the people you’re trying to date. If you’re a 65 year old man going after 20 years olds at the bar and it isn’t working, chances are it’s not going to work anywhere. Sometimes by dating someone that you wouldn’t typically date, your eyes will open up to new possibilities. So next time someone asks you out, before you say ‘no’ ask yourself why not. Why am I declining to give this person a shot? If your reasons are ligament, like different religions, then go ahead, but if your reason is “eh-they’re very good looking” or “well they work as a _____, so they probably don’t make enough money,” stop and look at yourself and ask- “How would I feel if someone said no to me based on that reasoning.”

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.
‘I’m So Excited’ When it appears as though the end is in sight, the pilots, flight crew and passengers of a plane heading to Mexico City look to forget the anguish of the moment and face the greatest danger, which we carry within ourselves. (R - 90 Minutes) Stan: First, ‘I’m So Excited’ is wacky, irreverent, risqué, earthy, raunchy, and a whole lot of fun! This latest Spanish language romp joins my list of two of my previous favorites from writer/ director Pedro Almodóvar. ‘Volver’ (2006) starring Penélope Cruz, and ‘The Skin I Live In’ (2011) starring Antonio Banderas featured eclectic stories of unusual circumstances with varying spins and twist on other wise ordinary situations. This latest is no exception; I never look at flying in the same way again.

‘Pawn Shop Chronicles’ A man searching for his kidnapped wife, a couple of white-supremacist meth heads and a sad-sack Elvis impersonator pawn more than they bargain for at a Southern small-town pawnshop. Stars include Brendan Fraser, Elijah Wood, Vincent D’Onofrio, Thomas Jane, Lukas Haas, Norman Reedus, Matt Dillon and Paul Walker. (R - 112 minutes) Joseph: The phrase “off-thewall” does not even begin to describe “Pawn Shop Chronicles.” In fact, there is little that one could actually say that would accurately relay the intensity of the insanity that director Wayne Kramer achieves in his new darkly comedic anthology. The same could be said of the resulting entertainment value, which is - at the very least - through the roof. Accentuated by an all-star cast, many members of which are practically unrecognizable, these three salacious stories will have your head spinning in circles and cause your jaw to punch a hole straight through the floor.
‘Trash Dance’
‘V/H/S/2’
Choreographer Allison Orr joins city sanitation workers on their daily routes to listen, learn and ultimately to try to convince them to collaborate in a unique dance performance thereby finding beauty and grace in garbage trucks - and in the men and women who pick up our trash. (NR - 65 minutes)
While searching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his house and find collection of VHS tapes. Upon viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize that there may be dark motives behind the student’s disappearance. (R - 95 minutes)
Joseph: Anyone who identified with the insights shared by Wes Bentley’s Ricky Fitts character in “American Beauty” as he recounted seeing a plastic bag blowing around in the wind will feel as though their heart is going to cave in while watching “Trash Dance.” Filmmaker Andrew Garrison’s new documentary demonstrates to viewers’ delight that beauty is, beyond any doubt, all around us even in the most seemingly mundane things of everyday life. To see these sanitation engineers smile as they step outside of their comfort zones and bring artistic significance to their work is inspiring, uplifting and entertaining.
Joseph: Less than one year after “V/H/S” was released, we get its aptly titled sequel “V/H/S/2.” And although the new horror anthology remains mostly meaningless with its solitary strength being the ingenuity of its found-footage techniques, the directors this time around have dialed down the unnecessarily shocking nature of each of their shorts and instead simply focus on taking full advantage of their respective gimmicks. None of the four would warrant a feature-length treatment and even wear on their welcome in short-form but all are novel enough to entertain fans of the found-footage genre.

COLUMNISTS
“‘The Way, Way Back’ is a coming of age story about a kid who is disconnected from his mom. He discovers this eclectic water park and has a rite of passage. Actually, it’s a rite of passage for all of the characters; the adults as well as the kids. They are all in transition. I hope people take away that… the people surround you give you the support or change to move into the next chapter of your life… that we can start the net part of our lives and become better people.” - Nat Faxon “We got to Sundance and were very excited and very nervous.
Up until that point only 20-25 people had seen the film. It was the first time the cast had seen it. To have the movie so warmly received, it was quite emotional. To finally get to that point was so wonderful and gratifying.” – Jim Rash “The very first scene of the movie; where Trent is asked about the scale of 1-10 actually happened to me when I was fourteen. I was in a station wagon as well. We were on our way up to our summers in Michigan and my stepfather had that same conversation. We then came up with the idea of
Randy: For the love of country. This controversial film is a tense political thriller that has a few extra twists not usually seen in a film of this subject matter. The complicated topic of the Middle East conflict intertwines itself with romance and patriotism. Ali Suliman delivers a perfect performance, as does the supporting cast. An interesting and worthy watch.
‘A Hijacking’ Pilou Asbæk and Roland Møller play two crewmembers of a cargo ship that is hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. With the demand for a ransom of millions of dollars, a psychological drama unfolds between the CEO of the shipping company (Søren Malling) and the Somali pirates. (R - 99 minutes)
Joseph: “A Hijacking” is a movie about a hostage situation in the same way that “Moneyball” is a movie about baseball. That is to say that it is about the business as opposed to the action. And “action” is the keyword here as the new Danish import is sufficiently lacking such - at least in the traditional sense of the word. Granted, corporate conference room negotiations and prolonged exposure to unpleasant conditions are reality-based whereas heroic rescue attempts and retaliation efforts are far more fictional, but one is much more entertaining to watch while the other will likely put you to sleep.
water parks we went to on the East Coast. We thought that would be a great eclectic place where characters could be at odds for a story. We both had families that did the destination summer vacation at the same spot year after year.” – Jim Rash “It was important for us to find a park that was close to where we were filming. Luckily we found Water Wizz. It was perfect for our movie in the fact it wasn’t so large in scale that is seemed too corporate. It is a family run place. It was ideal for what we needed. We shot when they were fully functioning.”-Nat Faxon

Do you love to win big money? Well one lucky poker player could walk away with over $200,000 this year at the 9th Annual Arizona State Poker Championships. This tournament is making its exciting return to The ARENA Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale August 9-13, and will once again pit players of all skill levels against each other for a share of the projected $1 million prize pool.
the last two hours, come from dead last at the top of the stretch (the last hour) to win the tournament!
each player with $15,000 worth of chips. An optional $30 Staff Appreciation add-on will give players an extra $10,000 in tournament
“Each year our number of entries, audience turnout and prize pool grow because we strive to make the event a fun experience for both competitors and spectators,” said Kent Odekirk, director of poker at Talking Stick Resort. “The atmosphere is great. Supporters cheer on their favorite players, and while the stakes are high and everyone’s trying to win, they’re still looking to have a good time.” This year marks the fourth time in the No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em Championship’s nine-year history that the prize pool is expected to hit $1 million, which ensures the TOP 100 PLAYERS walk away with no less than $2,250! If the minimum, 1,000 entries, is met, the first place winner will take home a grand total of $208,300, a championship bracelet and trophy. Second and third place winners will take home $127,500 and $85,000 respectively, as well as trophies to commemorate their win.
Mind blowing finish in the 2012 tournament!
Don’t miss the “Warm-Up” Tournaments There is even more excitement during the week before the Main Event. On Monday August 5 thru Thursday August 8, The Arena Poker Room is holding “Warm-Up Events” at 11:15am each morning. These NLHE tournaments vary in buy-in amounts – Aug 5th $120 buy-in, Aug 6th the buy-in is $225 Aug 7th is a $330 buy-in and there is a $550 buy-in on Aug 8th – Prize pools vary, call for details. Over the course of the Championship, a designated number of participants will play on days 1, 2 and 3. Players eliminated on the first day will be allowed to re-enter on day 2 or 3 for the full buy-in amount of $1,080. Players eliminated on the second day will be allowed to re-enter on day 3 with a $1,080 buy-in. Those days of play will determine the semi-finalists, who will move on to compete on Day 4 – Monday, August 12th until just ten players remain. The exciting finals occur on Day 5 of this event on Tuesday, August 13th where the “Final Table of 10” will battle it out until a 2013 champion is crowned.
Two ways to enter this tournament Sign-ups for the Arizona State Poker Championship began June 1. To enter, players can pay a $1,000 buy-in with an additional $80 entry fee. The buy-in provides
chips. Players also can “win a seat” into this prestigious tournament by participating in The ARENA Poker Room’s satellite tournaments going on daily until Sunday, August 11 at 6am.
Last year’s Championship welcomed a record-breaking 1,233 players. The large number of entries raised the prize pool well above the estimated $1 million to a total of $1,233,000, which, in turn, increased the first place winnings to a total of $233,696 that went to an excited “BG” Gant II from Casa Grande. “BG” came back from being down about $30,000,000 in tournament chips to just a shade over $1,000,000 – when only two players were left standing. WHAT A FINISH! It was like watching a mile horse race, with the top three horses dominating all the way – only to have a long shot (“BG”) who trailed the entire field of ten AZWeeklyMagazine.com

BLACKJACK CORNER losses plus a unit. The problem with this system is that it is easier than you think to lose a lot of bets in a row and quickly run out of betting money, or reach the table max bet.
Betting systems I receive a lot of e mail about “Betting Systems” - Plain and simple, there has never been a betting system devised that can mathematically overcome the house advantage on a casino game, in fact they can’t even make a dent in it. The bottom line is that dice and roulette wheels have no memory. Each toss of the dice and every spin of the wheel is independent of all past events. Just because you see black come up on the roulette wheel six times in a row does not make red any more likely to come up on the next spin, the odds are always the same. The longer you play, the closer you will get to the expected outcome for that particular game, a loss. The biggest gambling myth is that an event that has not occurred recently is overdue and thus is more likely to come up. This is the basis for most of the betting and playing systems that you see in magazines and on the internet making wild claims. For example; one roulette system says that if you see red come up three times in a row - you should load up on black for the upcoming spin. The problem is that the previous three spins have nothing to do with the upcoming spin, it is completely independent and the probability of red or black remains the same. Martindale The system that I get asked about the most is the “Martindale System” - This is a system where the player doubles their bet after losing. For example if you bet $1 and lose, your next bet is $2, if you lose that your next bet is $4, if you lose that $8, if you lose that bet $16, and so on.
Gambling magazines and the internet are full of people selling betting systems with the promise of huge wins over the casino at games of chance. These offers are the modern day equivalent of the old wonder tonic pitchmen out of the old west. Never spend one penny on a gambling system. Every time one has been put to the test in a computer simulation it has failed and failed miserably. They always show the same ratio of losses to money as flat betting. Gambling systems have been around as long as gambling and not one has ever been proven to work. You can gain an edge over the casino by learning to count cards in the game of blackjack. It takes a lot of work to master this, but it is mathematically proven to overcome the casino edge. By assigning a plus value to smaller cards and a minus value to the tens and aces it gives you the composition of the remaining cards to be played, you know if there is a surplus of tens or a surplus of small cards yet to be dealt. With this information you know if you or the house has the advantage on the upcoming hand and you then select your bet size accordingly. Additionally there are 43 changes in playing strategy over basic strategy. This gives you a more accurate way to play the hands. By playing this way instead of the casino having a .57 advantage over the basic strategy player, you have a long term advantage of about 1 1/2%. You have to play perfectly in order to have this long term advantage and it takes practice but in the long run it is worth it. You can learn to count cards in my book, available on my website WWW.freewebs.com/tjsblackjackcorner T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play. He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world and has won the prestigious World Series of Blackjack. His book, “Beating the Casino at Their Own Game,” is available through his web site www.freewebs. com/tjsblackjackcorner or by e-mail TJ4justice1@msn.com
The idea behind this system is that by doubling your bet after a loss you would win enough to cover all past

Image Home Improvement Live! How much to replace your roof? That depends… The one part of your house that protects everything you own is your roof. It is your first line of defense. Your roof is exposed to many weather elements. From the intense summer heat to the colder winter months, the expansion & contraction will age your roof. Whether you have a shingle, tile or foam roof it must be checked periodically to ensure that its integrity is still sufficient.

Your roof’s durability depends on several factors: type and quality of roofing materials, manufacturer, attachment method, preparation work (overlaying old roofs or removing and replacing), life expectancy, best colors for the desert, cost and warranty. Image Home Improvement, Inc. can assist you with making the right choices for your home. Re-Roof or Repair? An assessment of your roof’s condition can be done. If it is an older shingled roof it may need to be replaced entirely instead of spot repairs. Signs of a shingled roof deteriorating are many granules on the ground from the shingles after a rainstorm, missing sections of shingles, leaks within the home after a rainstorm causing stain spots on your drywall ceilings and walls. Shingles are made of a base (organic or fiberglass) that is saturated with asphalt and coated with minerals on one side to resist weathering. Fiberglass shingles are more flexible and stronger than organic shingles. Shingles come in a widevariety of styles, quality, and colors. Shingle roofs can overlay
an existing roof if the initial roof is a single layer (3-tab shingle) and in good condition. Shingle material warranty will range from 20 to 50 years. A certified installer must install the roof to be under warranty by the manufacturer. Tile roofing is an option for some homes. You can’t take a shingled roof and replace it with a tile roof without beefing up the truss structure of the home. Tile weighs more than singles do.This new support structure should be engineer approved as the truss structure must be supported correctly to handle the new weight load. The home becomes waterproof by using an underlayment, or felt paper installed underneath the tile. Some felt is organic, but all deteriorate over time, especially in the “Arizona sun”. This usually takes 12 to 20 years, depending on several factors, and then the felt must be removed and replaced (R&R). Sprayed polyurethane foam (SPF) systems or better known as just plain “foam roofs” can supply the homeowner with many benefits. The two most prominent benefits are waterproofing/leak prevention and insulation value. Foam is usually used on flat roofs. Its expansion results in a weathertight roofing membrane that is fully adhered to the substrate. There’s something magical about sitting down around a big table, sharing a meal, sharing stories, maybe having an argument or two, but experiencing a rare solidarity that’s hard to achieve in other settings. For many families where members are scattered at dinnertime, or for families separated by “Here circumstances, the family dinner may not happen every night, but only on Sunday or a holiday or Comes other special occasion. Honey Boo Boo” And for some folks, friends make up the fellowship of the dinner table. For all these realities, there’s reality TV there to reflect them. Returning on Tuesday, July 17, for its second season, TLC’s “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” features child beauty pageant participant Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson and her family in rural Georgia. In between pageants, Honey Boo Boo and her family – parents June (“Mama”) and Mike (“Sugar Bear”), and her three older sisters – sit down to family dinners on a weekly family food budget of $80.

BEER! SECTION
BEER!
The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”
BACK TO BASICS The three “R”s are what we are first taught in school. Reading, Writing and Arithmetic… the basics, if you will. Before learning the complexities of anything we must first learn the basics. We are frequently exhorted to get back to the basics. Craft beer is no different. Most of the time the phrase implies that some sort of problem has arisen and getting back to the basics means let’s start over and do it right. Clearly that is not the case with the craft beer industry. So why is it important now to get back to the basics to re-learn, and more importantly, understand where the industry came from? Fortunately, but not surprisingly, I have an opinion. It is one we have discussed before in this column, but one that bears repeating. There have been several recent articles calling into question the need for a brewery to have a flagship brand. I have even heard people suggest that all craft breweries should brew nothing but high end, special release items. Clearly this is absurd for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, there is a limit to how many $10$30 bottles of beer people will purchase. Not everybody has the bank account to support that kind of habit for long. And for those of you that think that a brewery could lower their prices if that was all they were producing, I say…exactly the opposite. Many of these breweries are able to produce and sell their specialty releases at, or even below, breakeven because of the success of their flagship brands. If they had to recoup all expenses in running a brewery through the sales of limited release beers, then beer costs would probably double.

So what has happened? Is the industry running amok with the thought of producing the next big thing? Must every beer consumer consider themselves a Captain Ahab in search of their own “white whale?” Or is there room for everything to peacefully co-exist…a balance that can be achieved between flagship and specialties? I would suggest the latter must be true in order for craft beer to survive and continue to flourish. The main reason for this is that it is not the hardcore beer geeks that are responsible for the growth of craft beer. A growth that is annually in the double digits. Lest we ruffle any feathers, the hardcore beer geeks should get credit for being early adopters and influencers of craft beer…and certainly do their share to build a community’s craft culture. But the real success of craft beer lies in the conversion of new drinkers. Some come from the American Premium Lager camp, looking for bigger flavors; while others come from the wine drinking community, looking for the big flavors they already know but with a little less alcohol or at a lower cost. In fact, the craft beer industry gained many wine consumers during the Great Recession of 2008 (and 2009 and 2010…) when wine drinkers realized that they could still get full flavored beverages, but instead of paying $12 per glass, they could do it at $5 per glass just by switching to beer. I think we all realize that the first step to gaining a new, regular consumer is getting them to try the product. Craft beer is no different. So are all these new consumers out searching for Dark Lord or
Canadian Breakfast Stout? No, they are reaching out to the flagship brands…the brands they can find at the bars and restaurants they frequent, as well as the grocery stores where they shop. These are the people that are raising the industry to new heights with their discovery of craft beer. It should come as no surprise then that most people come to craft beer through various flagship brands. Many of these are brands that the beer snob would look down on. I would be willing to bet that the single biggest transition or gateway beer is probably Blue Moon. It is safe to say that without Blue Moon, there would be a lot less craft beer drinkers in the world. If you took away brands
like New Belgium Fat Tire, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Anchor Steam, that number would drop even further. Of course you will have some people that will make the inevitable discovery (learned that phrase watching Law and Order) of fuller flavored beer without ever touching a flagship brand.Just as you will have some brewers that will be successful

without brewing a flagship beer. However, these are the exceptions, not the rule. At the end of the day, we all get to drink craft beer because people took a risk and created a flagship brand to back a company that they were just getting started. They needed a brand that would sell well enough to create the cash flow needed to build the company, and maybe to experiment with beers that had even more flavor. New Belgium is the classic example of this. Don’t think for one minute that a brewery could create the kind of brewery that produces La Folie and the rest of the Lips of Faith series, without first getting their feet under them with Fat Tire. It is only fitting that the “flagship” beer bar in Arizona, Papago Brewing, would recognize this trend towards Flagship Fatigue and realize that if the craft beer industry it to continue to flourish, something must be done to remind people of why they are craft beer drinkers in the first place…to bring us all back to basics. That is just what they are doing on Thursday July 11th. Imagine several iconic craft breweries gathering to share their flagship beers while holding a panel discussion about the importance of getting back to Continued On Page 40

Since we are getting back to basics, it would be appropriate for a journalist to end an article with a nice closing paragraph tying everything together. Well, if you ever meet a journalist, make sure you tell him or her that. Me…I’m just going to tell you that I look forward to seeing you at Papago Thursday night.

Doug Odell of Odell Brewing; Jim Roper and Andy Ingram from local heavyweight Four Peaks; and perhaps a few others will discuss their flagship brands, along with the importance of understanding and appreciating the basics of craft beer. This promises to be an exciting event and will likely play to a packed house at Papago. Start time is 6:30 PM, but plan on getting there a little early to get a good seat and to enjoy a beer or two prior to the event. Of course, there will be plenty more than just flagship beers available. After all, nobody is advocating the elimination of the more limited specialties, just the importance of co-existence with the flagships.

Featuring four craft beers from Grand Canyon Brewing Company’s bomber bottle line, the Desert Botanical Garden’s new restaurant, Gertrude’s is set to host a delicious four-course dinner on Wednesday, July 17 at 6:30 p.m.
Open since January, Gertrude’s offers a fresh new food experience focusing on ingredients directly from the farm and pasture to the plate. This delicious summer collaboration beer dinner with the Grand Canyon Brewing Company is no exception. The first course features Charred Dry Aged Beef Carpaccio paired with GCB Shaggy Bock— a classic bock style using three different
types of sweet German Munich malt smoked over shaggy bark juniper, giving a hint of campfire flavor. Then, German Perle and Saphir hops are added to balance all that malt, 6.74%, ABV. This brew is conditioned with a Flavor Bomb containing a toasted oak stick so it just keeps getting better and better with age. Next up, enjoy Grilled Spicy Quail with Blue Cheese paired with GCB Hop Bomber India Pale Ale—not your run of the mill IPA, it’s made with Marris Otter malt with a plethora of hops. The Flavor Bomb is filled with a variety of hops cones before it’s inserted into the bottle, 7.5% ABV. The third course is Roasted Swine with Crispy Fingerlings, Heirloom Tomato, Roasted Corn and Salsa Verde which will pair perfectly with GCB Sunset Amber Ale—a blend of German, United Kingdom and Canadian medium roast crystal malts along with rich Munich and Pale malts give this amber a complex color and sweetness. Cascade hops help to tame the sweetness. Finally, finish off this scrumptious
meal with a Dime Store Banana Split paired with GCB Coffee Bean Stout—a full bodied stout with pale, Munich, caramel, crystal and chocolate malts that lend sweet coffee and toffee flavors. Then, UK Golding and a high roast barley finish this beer making it toasty and dry, 5.2% ABV. Coffee Bean Stout has 100 lbs of oatmeal per 15 bbl batch smoothing out the middle and the Flavor Bomb is packed with locally sourced Sumatra coffee beans for optimum flavor conditioning. The Dime Store Banana Split is prepared with Coffee Bean Stout gelato, banana gelato, smoked hot fudge, candied bacon, stout whipped cream and cherries. Space is limited for this craft beer and craft food experience. Call 480-719-8600 to make reservations, $50++ per person. Hurry up, seats will go fast! Gertrude’s is located at the Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix. Visit www. gertrudesrestaurant.net for more information. Also, visit www.dbg. org for information about the Desert Botanical Garden, open daily 7 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Greetings beer lovers, today lets head south of the valley and chat about the Tucson Beer Scene. After spending a day out that way checking it out I must say it is worth sharing!
BEER! SECTION
Tucson Beer, Bet Ya didn’t Know!
First we’ll begin with the pubs. My favorite is 1702 Pizza located right next to the university. With fifty two beers on tap, this is the place to try all the hottest new releases. Owner operator Austin Santos has a passion for craft brew truly unmatched by most people I know anywhere in Arizona and it shows through the amazing selections always available on draught. Following closely in Austin’s footsteps is the new Tap & Bottle located just a few short miles away in town. This brand new operation features twenty ALL craft beers on tap plus a huge selection of rare and hard to find bottles not seen anywhere else in the area. With a good mix of American Craft and Belgian styles this is a must see when you find yourself in the neighborhood.
Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com
What list would be complete without mentioning the breweries? With three new breweries including Borderlands, Dragoon and Ten Fifty Five, you will have your hands full trying to see them all in a day. There are still a few veterans in the area including Nimbus and Barrio but it’s these aforementioned new kids that are really pushing the boundaries of craft. Did you know that Borderlands has a welldeveloped SOUR program? My god are these beers wonderful. Then take Dragoon and their fantastic Berliner Weiss style called Daisy or the Double IPA named Sarcosucus (SuperCroc). Not many breweries here in the valley have dared be so brave. Trouble is a brewin’ down south and it’s delicious. Day Trip Anyone? Until Next Week, Cheers!

For the second cocktail, Matt will pour a slightly different whiskey or bourbon and compare it to the first. This second cocktail will be less involved and easy for beginners. Complementing appetizers will be offered during the event. Happy hour snacks and drinks will also be available for purchase. Complimentary three-hour, self-parking with validation is available in the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel parking garage, which is adjacent District American Kitchen and Wine Bar.

Quick, think of the best all-around hitters in baseball history. What names come up? Lou Gehrig? Ted Williams? Rogers Hornsby? Jimmie Foxx? One current player who might belong with that august group is Miguel Cabrera, the slugging third baseman for the Detroit Tigers. A triple crown winner a year ago, the 30-year-old Venezuelan is once again putting up formidable numbers in the 2013 season’s first half. At this writing, he was leading the American League in batting with a .370 average, to go with 20 home runs (tied for third) and 75 RBIs (first). Prior to 2012, no hitter had won the home run, RBI and batting titles in the same season since Carl Yastrzemski did it in the pitching-dominated year of 1967. So how do Cabrera’s career stats stack up to the immortals? Through 10-plus seasons (through late June), Cabrera had a .321 average with 341 home runs and 1,198 RBIs. Compare that to Gehrig (.344, 348, 1,447), Williams (.347, 323, 1,261), Hornsby (.363, 180, 958) and Foxx (.333, 379, 1,345) at the same stage of their careers, and one can see that for power and run production he’s as good as anyone, though his batting average may be somewhat lacking – relatively speaking.

Magic: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014
PC/$9.99/Available Now As the popularity of Magic: The Gathering grew, Wizards of the Coast began to transition the collectible card action from tabletops to computers and consoles. While many players still enjoy the face-to-face action of a physical card game, the allure of a fast-paced game without having to track health, look up rules or deal with unruly competitors became preferable. “Magic: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014” expands on the virtual card fun introduced in 2009 by offering new additions including Sealed Play, which allows players to create decks by opening booster packs and play against AI or human players. Also included are new additions to the popular Sliver creature type. With new gameplay options at their disposal, new creatures to control and a low price point of 10 bucks, it’s hard to imagine any fans of the card game passing up “Magic: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014.” AZWeeklyMagazine.com
If you’re a betting man or woman, it’s hard to mount a compelling argument against Chris Froome in this year’s Tour de France. Indeed, the 28-year-old Kenyan-born Brit enters this year’s 21-stage, 2,115-mile race through the French countryside as the odds-on favorite to make it two in a row for Great Britain after countryman and Team Sky teammate Bradley Wiggins won it in 2012. He’s coming in in top form, having recorded victories this year in four major stage races: the Tour of Oman, the Criterium International (Corsica), the Tour de Romandie (Switzerland) and the Criterium du Dauphine (Switzerland and France). And rather than kicking back at home in Monaco after his most recent win in June, he headed off to check out the Alpine climbs that will figure heavily in the Tour. After that, it was off to training camp in France.

Bill Frisell is one of the masters of taking what you know about jazz guitar and gleefully throwing it out the window. On his latest, Big Sur, Frisell once again offers an entrancing series of vignettes and sonic landscapes inspired by the famed section of California coastline. With the surf rock of “The Big One” and the easygoing Americana of “The Music of Glen Deven Ranch,” Frisell keeps you on your toes. A string ensemble lightens the mood as Frisell plays the melodic “A Beautiful View” and helps augment the sinister quality of his distorted electric guitar on “Highway 1.” “Hawks” is an upbeat improvised jazz jam that mirrors the erratic movements birds can make, so that track is especially good fun. Lush, varied Big Sur is Frisell at his visionary best.
Liam Gallagher will always be synonymous with Oasis, but on Beady Eye’s latest he is continuing to try to make a new name for himself. “Second Bite of the Apple” riffs on the rhythm of The Zombies’ classic “Time of the Season,” while “Soul Love”’s plodding bass and ominous atmospherics make for an unexpectedly moody track. The jangly rocker “I’m Just Saying” surprises with its sing-songy “one, two three” chorus, and it sounds odd when Gallagher sings “Give peace a chance” on the epic folk track “Don’t Brother Me.” Gallagher’s thin vocals are starting to betray him at times, but he still has an undeniably magnetic quality about him. Be won’t change your life, but it’s better than their uneven 2011 debut, Different Gear, Still Speeding.

Sunday, July 14 at Celebrity Theatre For Nuge maniacs, a Ted Nugent show is not just a performance— it’s a fire breathing celebration! The guitar wild man brings his Black Power tour to the intimate Celebrity Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, in honor of all his black heroes. At 64, Nugent has carved a permanent place in rock ‘n roll history as the ultimate guitarshredding showman. His career spans five decades of multiplatinum hits and more than 40 million albums sold. Both as a solo artist and with the Amboy Dukes and Damn Yankees, the veteran rocker has amassed a sizable list of well-known numbers, including “Journey To The Center Of The Mind,” “Stranglehold” (ranked in the Top 100 Classic Rock Songs and #1 Guitar Lick), “Free For All,” “Dog Eat Dog,” “Wango Tango,” “Cat Scratch Fever” (32nd Best Hard Rock Song of All Time), “Motor City Madhouse,”

cult classic “Fred Bear” (the most requested song for radio airplay in Michigan and Wisconsin), “High Enough” and “Love Grenade.” Nugent and his inimitable sound has been featured on VH1’s Behind the Music. Fondly called the Motor City Madman, Nugent was named Detroit’s Greatest Guitar Player of All Time by readers of MLive! This year he’s calling his tour Ted Nugent: Black Power 2013 to continue the celebration of the Funk Brothers. Nugent, a Michigan native, resides in Texas, and is known for his ultra conservative political views. He is also an avid gun rights activist. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets to see Uncle Ted ($45 and $60) are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www. celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext.1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is located just four blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix. AZWeeklyMagazine.com
