2009. Performances times are 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the Arizona Broadway Theatre. Show tickets are $7.00, and meals will be available for purchase at all performances. Based on a fairy tale by Oscar Wilde, The Selfish Giant centers on a giant who after many years, returns to his home, only to discover that children have been using his garden as a playground. To keep the children out, the giant builds a wall. What ensues is a story of hope and belonging that helps remind the giant that there is much joy in helping others. Arizona Broadway Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) kicked off its program last summer with a highly acclaimed production of The Wizard of Oz. Past TYA productions includes The Elves and the Shoemaker and Charlotte’s Web. “Theatre for Young Audiences is our opportunity to perform shows more suited to children. It’s a great way for children to experience live theatre with their parents,” remarked Kurtis W. Overby, who oversees ABT’s children’s programs. “Over the last year, we have introduced live theatre to many children in the valley and will continue to do so throughout the coming year with other great productions including, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Last Dragon and Alice in Wonderland. Arizona Broadway Theatre for Young Audiences is sponsored by ‘You Are Here, an urban stroller’s guide to the northwest valley’. Arizona Broadway Theatre is conveniently located south of W. Bell Road off the Loop 101, east of the Peoria Sports Complex. Interview/Review by Stan Robinson Most will remember Michael Keaton as Beetle Juice (1988) and his two appearances as Batman (89’ -92’). I remember him with fond memories because in 1986, I worked on the hockey story based movie Touch and Go that was filming in Chicago. He was laid back and easy going as we braved the Chicago winds of late fall. Now, it’s like the “Six degrees of Kevin Bacon” game (based on the concept of the small world phenomenon and any actor can be linked through their film roles to actor Kevin Bacon within six steps), that I had the opportunity to talk with actor/producer Tom Bastounes. His latest movie, A Merry Gentleman, is directed by and stars Michael Keaton (his directorial debut), filmed in Chicago, and is Tom’s first as an actor, and producer, of a major motion picture! It’s the story of a hit man with a secret (Keaton), a woman with a past (Kelly Macdonald), and the detective (Tom Bastounes) trying to piece it all together. And, that’s on screen as well as off screen, for Tom Bastounces! There are the actors who also direct. Tom is an actor who also produces. “Its so challenging to be involved in more than just one aspect of a film” says Tom, “Film making is very collaborative, playing the role is fun and one aspect of it, to be the ‘Sheppard’ of the project is the ultimate challenge”. Stan: How did the film come together with you as producer and Michael Keaton as star and director? Tom: I read the script, and the writing is very smart, with a story book-fable quality with a mystical feel to it. In terms of my character of the cop, we have a mind-set of the typical macho cop. This cop is a surprise. I’m really flattered by your reference Stan, to the “Columbo” aspect of the cop. The cop in the film is really reflective

Stan: Now comes that big question Tom, how did you and Michael work this out. There’s the aspect of you as producer, the guiding force of the project, and the director’s vision of how he tells the story with the added aspect that it’s the first time for you both (with a chuckle)! Tom: (laughing) Michael made it easy! He was very collaborative, it was his first time directing, and I hadn’t done any thing on this level before and we both looked at each other as equals! We were very supportive of each other, and the crew was really in our corner! When we ran into a little roadblock, we’d confer, talk about it, everybody wanted to make a good movie! It was easy because the material was so well written, it’s like you stop at a corner because you’re lost and you take a look at your map, our script, it provided what we needed so we stayed true to it. Stan: Its been my experience working on films where the director is also starring, that the cinematographer is key to letting the director/star know if it’s a good take or not, and on track? Tom: So very true! Our cinematographer is Chris Seager, a Brit that Michael became good friends with on 2005’s “White Noise”. Michael had been thinking about directing and paid close attention to

of the time when stories involving cops played to their “smarts” as opposed to the action. My models for the character were the Columbo’s and the Kojak’s, who seemed slow moving on the surface, but realized that they were very smart! That was the fun of those shows, that’s were the character came from. The writing (script) was also the major factor that attracted Michael (Keaton) to the project. Kelly Macdonald was on board before Michael, and he really liked her work”.

Jeremy Renner Stars in The Hurt Locker

THE BIGGEST MOVIE OF THE SUMMER HAS ARRIVED.”

By Randy Montgomery At 38 years old, California born actor Jeremy Renner has taken on numerous challenging roles, such as playing Jeffrey Dahmer and the moving and tragic Take, but none have been quite as intense as Director Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker. The script is written by Mark Boal, a journalist who was embedded with U.S. military bomb squads in Iraq. Within seconds of the film starting, we get a feel for what team members of the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal, or EOD deal with on a daily basis. The EOD is an elite squad, with by far one of the most challenging and dangerous of all positions, yet few know their story. The filmmakers chose it wise to open the film with a quote which states, “War is a drug.” When you see the adrenaline pounding drama these soldiers deal with, you can fully understand that statement. Set in Baghdad in 2004, the story follows three soldiers in Bravo Company who only have 38 days left to serve. After losing their teammate, Sergeant JT Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty) are shocked to see the recklessness and disregard for protocol demonstrated by the newest member of their team, Staff Sergeant William James (Renner). While a genius at his trade, James shows his bravado and lack of fear when tackling such threats as car bombs, ambush attacks and bombs stuffed into dead human bodies. The war in Iraq is unlike any other before. There are no jungles in which to fight, the opposition simply needs to hide an IED – Improvised Explosive Device (homemade bomb) which is capable of wiping out city blocks. The EDO is trained to find these devices and disarm them before they explode. What exactly is a “hurt locker?” Renner answered, “(Director) Catherine’s interpretation is that is it the ultimate place of pain, which certainly I agree with. When I read the script I thought it was a casket or a hospital bed. Maybe emotional, mental anguish. No matter how you look at it, it’s not a good place. It’s somewhere you do not want to be. But you’ll know it when you are in it.” Upon getting an idea of the stress and pressure put on those in the EOD, one could easily see how all of those explanations certainly would fit.

in Jordan, a close neighbor to Iraq. “We didn’t build one set,” says Renner. “We were really on city streets, and half of the people that ended up in the movie really weren’t supposed to be in the movie. There were always people running through. Cats, children… we never knew if they were supposed to be a part of the movie or not. It made it real for us.” Adding to the realism was the 125-degree, 100-pound suit Renner was forced to wear. The suit is exactly what you would see real EOD troops wearing. “(The troops) were the ones who helped me put the suit on, understand it and train in it – what it does, what it doesn’t do. What you think when you are wearing it. It was a fantastic experience working with them. I have great respect.” Telling the story of these soldiers and the emotional and mental toll the job takes drew Renner to the script. “It’s tragic. I am an American, we are involved in this war, but I never understood what was going on. We got to tell a story about the guys that are doing this job,” says Renner who hopes that audiences take away, “An awareness of the job, first and foremost. To take away something, a feeling, a thought they didn’t have before. To walk away with something, and I am pretty confident they will.” Does Renner have what it takes to be a real EOD? “There are parts of me philosophically like my character, but I don’t have what it takes to do what these guys do, not even close.”

Spanish wines have been taking the wine world by storm, and it’s about time. Spain has been at the top of my recommendation list for many years. I feel it has a wine for everyone. Spain provides wines with the history, romance and terrior of the old world. That said, rich textured, fruit forward new world styled Spanish wines are as much the norm as their earthier old world sibling. As you’ve heard me say before, wine is an opportunity to experience other cultures and have fun doing it. Gather some friends and take a little journey to the Iberian Peninsula this weekend, I’ll show you the way. Let’s begin in the west, just above Portugal, on the lush green shores of Galicia. Galicia still holds to some of its Celtic traditions dating to the 3rd Century BC. So if you happen to spy a bag piper you might just think you’re in Scotland. Keeping with its regional individuality, Galicians specializes in crisp white wines made from the Albariño grape. These wines have bright citrusy notes and a complex minerality that goes perfectly with all manner of seafood. Next we discover the big, bold Tempranillo based wines of the Toro region. Toro is south east of Galicia just east of the Portuguese border. In this hot sunny area they refer to the Tempranillo grape as Tinto de Toro. Full bodied and teeth staining are two descriptions you use for the wines of Toro. These wines scream out for rich grilled red meat or maybe Spanish Cabrales blue cheese for the vegetarian set.

Moving North East we arrive in Rioja. Its elegant Tempranillo based wines are some of the Spain’s most famous wines. Here are wineries generations old steeped in tradition along side shiny new modern operations with the latest in technology. The wines reflect this sense of tradition and progressivism. Some wineries make wines in a bold, fruit forward style, others create dry, earthy styles as they have for generations and some make both. Last stop Cataluña, on the north eastern coast. This area encompasses or borders wine regions that run the gambit of red, white and sparkling wines. Cava bars dot the streets of Barcelona paying tribute to the many sparkling wines made in Penedès region south of the city. A few hours drive west of Barcelona is the area known as Costers del Sergre where they produce earthy old world style reds by blending many grapes with, Tempranillo, Garnacha & Cabernet Sauvignon among them. Some of my favorite wines come from the areas of Montsant, Tarragona, Terra Alta and Priorat. The wines from these areas use many different grapes. For me the finest reds are Garnacha (Grenache) and/ or Cariñena (Carignan) based and the white wines of Garnacha Blanca (Grenache Blanc) are stunning. Now that we’ve traveled across Spain gathers some friends, wine and food and take the trip together. Wine recommendations: Penedès – Codorniu Brut Pinot Noir Cava (Sparkling Rosé) $15 to $25 Galicia – Burgans Albariño (White) $15 Toro – Bodegas Numanthia “Termes” (Red) $25 to $40

Blues foundation rooms across the country, and access to special events and discounts. The outdoor patio has a jaw-dropping view of the Strip.

PURE Caesars Palace PURE at Caesars Palace is a certifiable celebrity magnet—a prominent British clothier recently dropped $176,000 here. Patrons can generally get in for under a few grand, but it’s common to spend $20-$50k for a premium night out. Get an oversized bed above the dance floor, seek refined privacy in the Red Room, or party on the Terrace.

TAO at the Venetian The entry hall sets the tone here; it usually features a startling display of lingerie-clad models painting henna tattoos on one another. The nude model in the rose petal strewn bathtub is another giveaway. Warm up with dinner alongside a giant Buddha downstairs at Tao restaurant before heading up to this sexy Asian escape.

Tryst at Wynn

Light at Bellagio The doormen here select who can enter into Vegas’ first “European Bottle Service Club.” VIPs who prefer anonymity over showing off their wealth come here and ask for the blue room, while those want to want to enjoy the entertainment choose the main room. A Methuselah (six liters) of Dom Pérignon Champagne ($25,000) and a Rémy Martin Louis XIII ($14,500) are available, just ask.

Tryst boasts a 90-foot waterfall and a lagoon-themed atmosphere. Since it’s a partially open-air club, the outside breeze gives the dancers at Tryst a little extra lift. The most desirable tables are those on the dance floor, near the obligatory stripper pole and outside by the waterfall.

Moon Playboy Club at Palms The Playboy Club has its bunnies, while Moon has its views—a retractable ceiling opens up to the night sky every half hour. Both clubs are perched 53 stories high in the Palms Fantasy Towers. $14,000 gets you three-liter double magnum bottles of Cristal, and a friendly visit from a hostess.

Studio 54 at MGM Grand

Body English at Hard Rock Only the most fashionable will pass. Of the 57 tables, get one downstairs where the VIPs and celebrities loiter (the three “U booths” around the dance floor are the most popular). Jamie Foxx and Chris Tucker decided to stop over Memorial Day weekend.

July 9th - July 15th, 2009 AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

This is a 22,000 square-foot, highenergy club where VIPs can be voyeurs—the tables that look down on the dance floor. Half nightclub, half Cirque du Soleil act, Studio 54 also features “wall walkers” and dancers twirling above the bouncing dance floor. Look up, that’s confetti (not money) raining down on you. Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay For members only, plans start at $1,250 a year for individuals, and goes up to $8,500 a year for corporate groups. Membership includes access to all of the House of

Rain at Palms Not the newest club in town, but still very popular. Expect long lines, a dance floor surrounded by a water mote, go-go dancers on swings, and the occasional fire blast. A great place to come if you want to meet friendly visitors. There are plenty of VIP tables and skyboxes for preferred service.

How was your red, white and blue experience last weekend? As the heat presses upon us, we’ll tell you were to get a feeling of Christmas, some margaritas and will explore some of the Valley’s water parks. For all that happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley; read on. $5 Patron Margaritas: Café Carumba’s signature logo is a picture of a cowgirl circa the 1940’s in a bikini playing a guitar, its signature specialty is Southwestern fare, and its signature drink is the affordably priced $5 house margarita, served “all day all the time.” Located in Old Town Scottsdale and boasting a selection of over 60 tequilas, the café has one-upped itself by offering Patron Silver margaritas for only $5 throughout July. If you are not a margarita fan, you can enjoy other drink specials at Café Carumba’s 4-7 p.m. TuesdaySaturday Happy Hour with half price well drinks, house wines, draft beers, and select $5 appetizers. You can also stop in to enjoy Café Carumba’s Southwestern influenced breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu. www.azeats.com/cafecarumba Christmas in July: Why celebrate Christmas in July? “Why not?” is probably what The Ritz-Carlton, Phoenix would reply. Beginning July 10-13, the hotel will have familiar winter festivities that will spread cheer and good tidings this summer. Jeffrey the Bear, the Ritz-Carlton Afternoon Tea Mascot, will host afternoon teas July 10- 12 with noon and 3 p.m. seating. Families will enjoy tea, gourmet hot chocolate with marshmallows, finger sandwiches and petite pastries, and a sing-a-long around the piano. Adults can look forward to a Cupcake Tea and Hat Fashion show, featuring hat-designer Melissa Ondo’s creations on July 12 at 4:00 p.m. and Cocktails and Caroling July 13 at 7:30 pm. Each event is priced between $25-$35 and interested tea-tendees are encouraged to make reservations by calling, (602) 468-0700. Merry July! Calling all Cajun Cooks: Jambalaya, a crawfish pie and fillet gumbo – The Cajun Cactus Foundation is calling all cooks to register for the Fourth Annual Great Cajun Cook-Off. Applications are due by September 1, 2009. The actual event will take place Sunday, November 1, 2009 from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Lath House Pavilion on Heritage Square in Downtown Phoenix and will feature the best of the best homemade gumbo and jambalaya recipes. If you think you have what it takes get your recipes together now, and feel free to send samples to the Night Owl. Check out www. greatcajuncookoff.com for more information, applications, and rules. Good luck!

Wicked: What else is there to do during an Arizona summer, but find new places with the coldest air conditioning? Most people head to the movies to stay cool and entertained, but you can also go to the theater. Right now through July 26, ASU Gammage is featuring Wicked, a musical about what happened between Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch before Dorothy dropped in on Oz. The musical has gotten rave reviews from The Wall Street Journal and Time Magazine, and has Tony honorees working on production. So instead of heading to the movies for sticky seats and expensive treats try the theater. Tickets for Wicked start at $32, for more information, visit www. asugammage.com. specials, fun kids activities, and of course fireworks. www.haroldscorral.com Hot, Wet and Wild: For eight or nine months of the year, we have no use for water parks, but this time of year I demand one on each and every corner. Here are a couple of the Valley water park options, including some information on the brand new and much anticipated Wet ‘n’ Wild. In general, these are family oriented places, but that doesn’t mean adults who are looking for some fun can’t go too. A lot of these places have various specials and deals so keep your eyes and ears open for them. Big Surf: Big Surf has been the big dog in town for a while. Located in Tempe, Big Surf is celebrating their 40th anniversary. Can you believe that? Their main attraction is “Waikiki Beach” a 2 million (yes million) gallon wavepool were you can boogie board, body board or just frolic in the waves. They also have a number of slides including their newest attraction, Kilauea Cove. I’ve been to Big Surf a few times and always seem to have a blast. A hotel or backyard pool just doesn’t give you the thrill of flying down a humungous slide. Adult price is $26, and for more information you can go to golfland. com/tempe. Wet ‘n’ Wild: The newest kid on the block, Wet ‘n’ Wild has come with much hype and praise. Formerly known as Waterworld Safari, it was bought by and Australian company specializing in water parks, and just opened on July 4th. The park features a number of attractions including the world’s only dueling H20 rollercoaster, a whitewater rafting experience, and a number of other slides. From what I’ve heard from people, it is a bit more “extreme” than Big Surf. Adult admission is $35 and you can find more information at phoenix.mywetnwild.com. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

“I just need a Red Bull.” Chances are you’ve heard a friend or two utter these famous words. Although nothing will ever replace a healthy diet and good hydration (this means water), energy drinks have changed the way we function as a society and act as the perfect springboard for a night on the town. So what exactly are the best weapons of choice – and how can you safely mix them with one of your favorite adult beverages? If you think it’s just Red Bull and Vodka, think again. Here are 10 alcohol/energy drink combos that will have you feeling good and the party going full speed ahead in no time.

The Headless Barman

With Raspberry Pucker on board, this plenty delicious cocktail is a girls night out superstar. Within it is the perfect mix of sugar and caffeine, perfect for pre-party get-togethers. Ingredients - 1 oz. Sour Raspberry Pucker, 1 1/2 oz. Vodka, lemon, ½ Redbull, ½ Mountain Dew, 2 oz. Pineapple Juice --- Directions: Add pucker, vodka, and pineapple juice to a glass half-full of ice. Stir. Top up with energy drink and Mountain Dew.

The All-Nighter

When you’re ready to graduate from Vodka, this drink will be at the top of your list. This one fits nicely in the “Party Like a Rockstar” department. You’ll be leading the charge for quite a while. Ingredients: 1/2 oz. Rum, raspberry, 1/2 oz. Sour Apple Pucker, 1 1/2 oz. Red Bull, 3/4 oz. Pomegranate Juice Directions --- Stir ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into glass.

1.21 Gigawatts

Holy Mother of Pearl!! This is a feisty one. Get a bottle of Hypnotiq, the name speaks for itself. Mix it up with a bit of Red Bull and a shot of vodka and you have yourself a drink that will help create stories for generations of grandkids. You may want to grab a camcorder to enjoy the night’s events a few days later. Ingredients - 1/2 shot Hpnotiq, 1/2 shot Vodka, raspberry, 1 splash Grenadine, 5 oz. Red Bull Directions --- Similar to a Car-bomb… Grab a pint glass for your Red Bull and a shot glass for the other ingredients, Pour raspberry vodka and Hpnotiq into shot glass. Now pour a splash of Grenadine into the shot glass. The grenadine will sink, layering the drink. Drop the shot glass into a tall glass half filled with Red Bull.

K-12

The booze outweighs the energy, so you may want to take a seat for this one.

Ingredients - 1 shot Gin, 2 oz. Tequila, white, 1 oz. Triple Sec, 6 oz. 7-up, 2 oz. Rockstar, 3 cubes Ice Directions --- Using a highball glass, Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into glass.

1, 2, 3, Floor

This drink really needs no introduction with its name, but it promises to start the party with a bang. Ingredients - 1 bottle Champagne, 1 shot Hpnotiq, 8 shots Vodka, 2 cans Red Bull, 3 handfuls Ice Directions --- Using a big Pitcher and serving glasses, Put ice into pitcher, then add the bottle of champagne. Add the 8 shots of vodka and 1 shot of hypnotiq. Finally add the two cans of red bull and stir. Serve highball glasses to finish.

The Fearless Jedi

Bruce Lee Bomber

Enter the Dragon of Drinks, this one is another car-bomb drink and will give you a kung fu grip in a hurry. Golf is indeed one of the greatest games on earth. It can be however, somewhat frustrating at times, to say the very least. To master the craft takes time, patience, dedication and a true passion for the game. And perhaps most importantly, a good sense of humor….

If you do find that you do not mind playing golf in the rain, the snow, even during a hurricane, here’s a valuable tip: Your life is in trouble. Golfers who try to make everything perfect before taking the shot, rarely make the perfect shot. The term “mulligan” is really a contraction of the phrase “maulit-again.”

Golf’s a hard game to figure. One day you’ll go out and slice it and shank it, hit into all the traps and miss every green. The next day you go out and for no reason at all you really stink.

The best wood in most golfer’s bags is the pencil.

Golf is the only sport where your most feared opponent is you.

In golf, some people tend to get confused with all the numbers... they shoot a “six”, yell “fore” and write “five”.

Golf is like marriage: If you take yourself too seriously it won’t work....and both are expensive.

To some golfers, the greatest handicap is the ability to add correctly.

Why is it twice as difficult to hit a ball over water than sand?

Soccer is a Beautiful Game – the Rest of the World Will Agree

30 30

The beauty of soccer is in its simplicity. By far the most popular sport in the world, you don’t have to be a professional athlete to play soccer. You can enjoy playing the game regardless of how athletic you are. And it is a sport that transcends wealth. It’s played in every country by every ethnic group and religion. The rules of soccer are so adaptable that the game can be adjusted to fit your needs and it still works. You don’t have to have perfect hand eye coordination like in baseball or be muscular like in football. You don’t need skates and you don’t have to shoot a ball through a small hoop on a pole. You can play soccer barefooted in a pair of shorts and you will be fine. The game is made in such a way that all skill levels can still play. All you need is the desire and the basic ability to run and jump. No one is

left out. That is the beauty of it. You don’t need to be a great player to participate. The game of Soccer is alive and kicking among youths across the U.S. It’s fun, popular and a joy to play. However a majority of older Americans claim to dislike the potential lack of scoring, or the fact that a game could possibly end in a tie. In our minds is a need for consistent scoring, constant stimulus and a clear and definite outcome. In this county, no winner is “no good.” Attention deficit disorder aside, Soccer is so popular around the world because it can be played anywhere in any type of climate; indoors, alleys,

streets, ball fields, parking lots and dirt fields. The size of the field is relative to the size available to you. The amount of people that play depends on who is willing. You don’t need a referee to oversee the game. Fouls are obvious enough and they can be called or ignored depending on who is playing. Regardless if you are wealthy or poor all soccer requires is the will to play. Goals can be made of anything; cups, shoes, shirts, lines carved into the dirt. Not only that, you don’t even need a goalie. You just narrow the goal posts to make it harder to score. It all works in soccer. Plus you don’t need to have an official ball to play. The only rule in soccer that remains consistent is the hand ball. You can’t touch the ball with your hand. Outside of that rule all the other ones can be adapted to your situation. A kid can also play alone and hone his skills. He can practice ball handling, juggling, and shooting. He can kick the ball against a wall and just have a good time. It’s one of the few sports where you can practice and increase your skill level alone. Soccer is a beautiful game, especially so when it is played

almost every continent contend for the bragging rights as the best soccer playing nation on the globe. Regardless if you are a rich or poor nation the competition is fantastic. Since soccer is played in barrios and ghettos as well as the well groomed fields of suburbia, there is a greater opportunity for the best players to show off their talent and represent their country. What sport can offer so many people of varying backgrounds the same opportunity to achieve and excel and show the world their ability? In my opinion, the answer is soccer and soccer alone. Hopefully America will soon clearly see, why the rest of the world loves soccer so dearly.

Even though it was outlawed in 1920, the last legal spitball was thrown by New York Yankee Hall of Famer, Burleigh Grimes in 1934. At the time of the outlaw, anyone already using a spitball was allowed to continue. Burleigh Grimes continued for another fourteen years.

“STOP AND THINK ABOUT IT”

At Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, Florida, on June 26, 1985, organist Wilbur Snapp played “Three Blind Mice” following a call by umpire Keith O’Connor. The umpire was not amused, and saw to it that Mr. Snapp was ejected from the game. In playing poker, there is one chance in 500 of drawing a flush.

The ‘huddle’ in football was formed due to a deaf football player who used sign language to communicate and his team didn’t want the opposition to see the signals he used and in turn huddled around him. The only two days of the year in which there are no professional sports games (MLB, NBA, NHL, or NFL) are the day before and the day after the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Attention to Detail

It’s important for the shoulder pads on your jacket to fit square on your shoulders. If they fall too far to the front or back, the jacket you selected is simply too big. A good jacket should outline your frame and body-type instead of hugging your torso.

The wider the opening between collar points on a dress shirt, the larger the tie knot between the two should be. Let the knot fill the space along with a clean dimple for just the right look and feel.

Let the Sleeves Breathe Your shirt sleeve should extend half an inch past the jacket sleeve. The small glimpse of white from your sleeve will work wonders for your look as a whole. Be sure to bring your

Have a Ball (or two) Eliminating Back Pain An Effective Do It Yourself Massage - Anytime Anyplace

ball floor massage is done with just one ball. Simply lie on your back with the tennis ball under your lower back, raise your knees like a tent, and rock your hips left and right. This works well for lower back pain and tension. Step 2

With a busy, non-stop lifestyle comes plenty of tension and stress. It’s hard to make time for an appointment, and near impossible to reach around to give yourself a back or shoulder massage. Even if you have somebody available to do it for you, he or she may not massage you properly. What can you do? Well, if you have two tennis balls and a sock, there’s a fun, easy way to give yourself a quick, effective massage that feels great and can be done just about anywhere.

To floor massage your back with two balls, place one ball at the bottom of the tube sock, tie a knot, place the other ball inside, tie a knot, and cut off the excess sock. You now have a peanut shaped back roller that can be used as in step 1. You can roll your back up and down and adjust the position of the balls to massage higher up on your back. Step 3

Just a few simple items you will need….

Tennis Balls – Floor or Wall Tube Sock Step 1

You can also massage your back by placing a tennis ball between your back and the wall. Find the right spot for the ball, and rock your body up and down or left and right to work out knots and tightness in your back.

One of the easiest methods of tennis

Remember to stretch before and after you massage yourself to get the most out of the tennis balls. Stretching will loosen your muscles up so that the massage is more effective. Also remember not to do anything that creates more pain. If one position is uncomfortable, try another.

Step 5 The tennis ball is also great for treating foot pain that can often accompany back pain. Roll the ball under foot to massage away pain. This feels heavenly when you also put spacers between your toes. Step 6 Some people with lower back pain work their way down to smaller and harder balls. If you want to try this, start off gently with the tennis ball method and then gradually work your way down to balls that give you more pressure. Remember that you don’t want to create more back pain for yourself. Often the tennis

ball is enough to relive the most stubborn back pain and tension.

If your back pain is higher up and into your shoulders, you can take advantage of a heavy beam or corner to place the ball between your shoulder and the wall.

Mazda Miata Picture and Review by Chad Haire

Several years ago, Mazda dumped the Miata name for its small sports car, calling it the MX5. But the loyal fans wouldn’t hear of the name change, so now it’s called the MX-5 Miata to please both parties. Regardless of what we call it, this little car has proven to be very popular and has been refined over various model updates. The Miata comes standard with a soft-top. It’s easy to put up or down. An optional power folding hard-top is available. It does a better job of keeping the weather out, but adds weight and costs more. Under the hood is a small 2.0 liter engine, rated at 170 horsepower. It is hooked to a manual transmission with 5 or 6 speeds or a 6-speed automatic. Acceleration is not

breathtaking, but still sporty enough. Gas mileage runs between 2-28 mpg overall.

RIDE! SECTION

a s e M

This is a sports car, so the steering is quick, the cornering ability is plenty and the brakes are firm and effective. Most Miata cars I have driven had a comfortable ride, but this one had the optional sport suspension that resulted in a stiffer ride. Take your pick. The base price of a Miata is only $21, 585. A good deal. Mine was loaded up with luxury goodies, so it hit 30 grand. With the hard-top, automatic gearbox and minor stuff, these can max out at 35 thousand. But how else can you save gas and have fun at the same time?

representing for the rebels of the world. It’s where hip-hop meets the mosh pit! The world-wide hit song “Slam” by ONYX was the song that crossed them over. “It was like a rock n’ roll record and we never really went down the rock & roll/hip-hop lane before. We always kind of steered away from it and now we’re going to do a whole album inspired by that sound,” adds Sticky Fingaz of ONYX. One thing is certain, it’s an opportunity to see a passionate, inspiring act like no other – and promises to be an evening you won’t soon forget. what songs to play. It doesn’t give you a lot to do as far as stage time. But you know, summer run, it’s going to be a fun festival. The bands that are playing are really good bands. It’s a good show and I think people are going to get their money’s worth.”

The Mayhem Festival Tour by Jason Walsh Summer is the season when legions of trucks hit the roads bringing dozens and dozens of bands in touring festivals to every major city across the country. This year’s biggest metal smorgasbord is the Rockstar Mayhem Festival, with co-headliner’s Marilyn Manson and Slayer leading the pack with some of the world’s most heavy-hitting outfits. The madness comes to the Phoenix this summer as the carnival of brutality descends on the Cricket Wireless Pavilion on July 17. “I have good news and bad news to announce,” Manson said. “The good news is that I am completely aware now that our music and our Mayhem tour will have a negative, destructive influence on America. The bad news is that I don’t give a …..” Brian Warner, a.k.a. Marilyn Manson, formed the band back in 1989 as Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids with founding member and bassist Jeordie White, a.k.a. Twiggy Ramirez. Ramirez left the band in 2002 and recently rejoined to collaborate on Manson’s 7th studio release, “The High End of Low,” which hit the shelves this past May.

“I think my life definitely ended and

began,” Manson said. “The record sounds very final, but it’s almost optimistic, though that feels like a strange word to use. It’s a phoenix from the fire and a redemption resurrection.” Sharing the marquee with Manson on this year’s tour are the undisputed masters of thrash metal, Slayer, who have spent the past quarter century defining the true nature of the genre of which hundreds of bands have followed in their wake. Guitarist Kerry King said he was excited about being on the bill with Manson for a second year in a row. “We co-headlined with Manson once before, a couple years ago,” King said. “So, we all know what we’re getting into. Manson and I probably drank a little too much absinthe on that tour, but we had a really good time hanging out and playing good music. We’re looking forward to doing the same this summer on Mayhem.” Slayer front man and bassist Tom Araya also expressed his enthusiasm about the festival tour and for him it was a chance to make the Mayhem a family affair. “Yeah, actually that’s going to be good,” Araya said. “You know, it’s going to be a fun summer tour. I’m going to have my family out with me so it’s going to be fun. You know, we play an hour, which really doesn’t allow for too much, you know what I mean, so we have to seriously decide

Slayer has also been in the studio this past year working on their eleventh studio offering which is currently untitled, but according to the Araya will be released some time before year’s end. “Psychopathy Red” was a preview single of the new album which was released earlier this year and flew off the rack on its debut day. Araya expresses great satisfaction with the new material, which takes the band back to the earlier, heavier, lightning-fast moments of which the band made their bones. “I got nine songs that are mixed and sound amazing,” Araya said. “It’s

going to be awesome. It’s really, really good. It’s Slayer. It’s everything you want to hear Slayer do.” After twenty-five years of touring the world countless times, millions upon millions of sold records, and nods from the industry with two Grammy wins, Araya says that performing for the fans is still the most rewarding part of continuing the Slayer legacy “The stage time is the best time,” Araya said. “And, the fact that people want to come and listen to your music which is a phenomenon in itself. You know what I mean? That people actually want to come and listen to music that you created and play it. It’s amazing sometimes.”

Returning to Phoenix, like many cities across the country, brings out the diehard fans who never miss a Slayer

“It is crazy,“ he said. “We’d done in-stores and stuff and a few were where you get a proud father with a baby and then the next time you see him, the baby’s grown, with their own baby. Yeah, it is crazy and pretty neat to see and you can see it out in the audience too. And then the fans are

so loyal that whenever you play any certain cities you recognize faces. You know you’ve been seeing the same faces for the past twenty-five years, so it’s kind of neat when you’re like looking at the audience and you’re like, ‘Dude! I recognize you!’ and they know you recognize them. It’s kind of cool.” The Rockstar Mayhem Festival Tour swings into the city this August with an impressive lineup of supporting acts: Killswitch Engage, Bullet For

My Valentine, Cannibal Corpse, Trivium, God Forbid, Behemoth, All That Remains, Job For A Cowboy, The Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, and Mushroomhead. Araya said with a lineup like this, fans should not miss the spectacle.

ROCKSTAR MAYHEM FESTIVAL TOUR

“The bands are really good,” he said. “The bands on this bill are really good. It’ll be exciting. And, then they should come see us because we’re Slayer (laughs). That’s about it.”

Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra Summer Tour

Five-time Grammy nominee guitar virtuoso Ottmar Liebert and his band Luna Negra bring their summer tour to the intimate Celebrity Theatre on Thursday, July 16th. The Sanderson Music Series event begins at 8 p.m.; doors open at 6:30 p.m. Ottmar Liebert, one of the truly great modern flamenco guitar players of our time, will be releasing “Spanish Sun” exclusively through Target Stores nationwide on July 12th. Current releases by Liebert also include “Scent of Light” and “Up Close” which are being continuously played on over 90 smooth jazz and specialty stations around the country. The music mix in these recordings blend provocative sounds from fiery flamenco, Brazil and Peruvian rhythm with a touch of texture from ambient electronics and the solid back-ups from Jon Gagan on Bass and Stephen Duros on some blazing electric guitar. In February 2009 Liebert received the Silver award for Best Flamenco Guitarist from Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Gold went to Paco de Lucia and bronze to Vicente Amigo. Liebert has 15 Gold Awards and 23 Platinum and Multi-Platinum awards to his credit.

In addition to his performance and recording talents, Liebert is an accomplished photographer and savvy in the graphic communication arts. His release of the limited edition box set of ‘La Semana’ has received the 2006 Gold Star Award for CD/ DVD packaging (beating HBO’s DVD package for Deadwood and Universal Home Entertainments DVD package for the Marx Brothers). ’Creativity’ is an annual publication by Collins Design, an imprint of Harper Collins Publishers, and one of the oldest and most established graphic design competitions. Tickets ($45 and $65) are on sale now at Celebrity Theatre, or online at www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-2671600 ext.1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is conveniently located on 32nd St., just 4 blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, in Phoenix.
