Scottsdale & Arrowhead • www.skinsultry.com

There are some things in life which I simply refuse to compromise on. My peace of mind is one of those things. The best definition I’ve ever heard of for peace of mind is that it is freedom from anger, fear and guilt. You go to bed every night free from anger, fear and guilt and you wake up the following morning also free from anger, fear and guilt. Just imagine how many people go to bed every night with feelings of anger dominating their thoughts. What kind of sleep can result with anger freeflowing through their minds? Keep in mind that whatever thoughts you hold in your mind on an extended basis, grows. So, it’s like dwelling upon and attracting the very thing that you don’t want into your life. The same applies to fear and guilt, as well. This kind of explains why so many people have fitful sleep, no sleep at all or wake up already upset at the upcoming day. Without this peace of mind, nothing else seems to have much value... at least not to me. The amount of inner peace I’m enjoying tells me how I’m doing at life at any given time. I won’t compromise it…it’s my internal

gyroscope. Compassion, optimism, forgiveness, humility, discipline, and thankfulness are just a few of the values that I’ve identified as central to my attaining and maintaining my inner peace of mind. Living in harmony with your highest values will keep you perfectly balanced in life and you will enjoy peace of mind… but , if for any reason you compromise your values, your peace of mind will be the first thing to suffer. Never compromise your peace of mind for anything. Not anything! Literally speaking, folks, it’s our highest human good. Everyone whose life touches yours will be positively affected by it. If you ever trade your peace of mind for anything, it’s most likely that you’ll end up with neither. Whether it’s a job or a relationship, you’ll end up without the job, the relationship OR your peace of mind. It’s not worth it… simply NEVER compromise your peace of mind for ANYTHING. Like so many other valuable things in life, it’s not free. There is a price you have to pay for peace of mind and for each person… that price is different. The rule is simple: Whatever the price is… PAY IT! Pay it… sooner than later. Keep in mind that the sooner you pay the price, the sooner you’ll be free from anger, fear and guilt moving forward in your life. This is part of the being ‘true to yourself’ principle. Nature demands it from everyone for the success and happiness you seek. Don’t wait, thinking it’ll get done by itself…it won’t. Pay the price…you’ll feel wonderful about yourself. -Mack Newton Mack Newton is an 8th Degree Black Belt, Senior Master Instructor, Global Tae Kwon-Do Federation International and Chairman of the World Technical Committee

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

rules - shot for three-point shot - and thus cannot really be called original much less groundbreaking. Moreover, the scenes on the court are not exactly nailbiting (or even authentic for that matter). But that is why director Susan Seidelman’s motion picture is so universally appealing; it scores with its humongous heart as opposed to its superficial skills.

‘Broken’

‘The Hot Flashes’

Eloise Laurence plays a young girl whose innocence begins to vanish after bearing witness to a savage beating. Overwhelmed by her experiences, she is drawn into an ethereal chaos from which she may only return through the intense love of those closest to her. Tim Roth and Cillian Murphy co-star. (NR 90 minutes)

An unlikely basketball team of unappreciated middle-aged Texas women, all former high school champs, challenge the current arrogant high school girls’ state champs to a series of games to raise money for breast cancer prevention, become a national media sensation. (R - 99 minutes)

Joseph: “Broken” is a cinematic exercise in miserablism. If director Rufus Norris’s new drama adapted from Daniel Clay’s novel had some sort of constructive comment about a child’s sudden awareness of this world’s darker aspects, said experience would have at least had meaning. Instead, we must settle for mere feeling transference. In other words, the aforementioned misery is infectious. Granted, we all have our own issues that rear their ugly heads from time to time, but if real life were even remotely this melodramatic with earthshattering dilemmas flaring up for everyone we know simultaneously, suicides would be a far more common occurrence.

14

Randy: The film and its crew have their heart in the right place; unfortunately it’s not very good. A talented cast cannot save a predictable script, stereotypical characters and silly scenarios. Having lost my own mother to breast cancer, the effort of the characters and crew to raise awareness for the disease is admirable, but the movie doesn’t quiet cut it. Wait for the DVD and “flash” forward through it. Joseph: “The Hot Flashes” is a good-natured film about refusing to be sidelined due to one’s age - especially when the incentive is a bit bigger than a championship trophy. Having said that, the new sports comedy plays strictly by the genre’s

and 1/2 hours long in French with English subtitles deter one from a very powerful story of self-discovery and acceptance, while providing that catalyst for our own reaffirmation.

‘The Look of Love’

‘Laurence Anyways’ A drama that charts ten years in the relationship of a male-to-female transsexual’s relationship with her lover. (168 minutes) Stan: Writer/director Xavier Dolan presents a stark and revealing portrait of realization of the central character’s quest for personal identity and the effect it has on those in his/her orbit. Don’t let the fact that ‘Laurence Anyways’ is slow and methodical, and over 2

Steve Coogan plays adult magazine publisher and entrepreneur Paul Raymond who, as a modern-day King Midas, became one of the richest men in Britain at the cost of losing those closest to him. Anna Friel and Imogen Poots also star. (NR - 105 minutes) Randy: There is nothing not to like about this Steve Coogan biopic about England’s king of nudie musicals on London’s West End, but there is nothing overly memorable about it either. His nude magazines may have been groundbreaking in the 60’s and his philandering scandalous, but an interesting story for 2013 it does not make.

The first ‘Twilight’ (2008) is the only film in the saga to not receive any Razzie Award nominations.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actress Virginia Madsen (‘The Hot Flashes’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“I didn’t know how to play basketball. And even though I studied dance for years, was physically fit and was up for the challenge, I felt very selfconscious about playing a sport. I just did not think that I could do it. I was really scared but I found out that I was pretty good at something that I had never done before. I could really do it and that was a huge surprise to me.

spread their wings and fly. And they start doing it again when you are in your late 40s. People start saying, ‘Oh, you can’t do that! You can’t dress that way! You must be frightened that you are getting old!’ They discourage you from still having adventures in your life. “A friend of mine recently decided to change careers.

She retired from her business, moved to another country and people were like, ‘You can’t do that! You’re 45 years old! What if you fail?’ Of course, I told her to go for it. And she made a great success of it because she believed in herself. That is another thing that you can take away from this movie. Believe in yourself against all odds.” – Virginia Madsen

Randy Montgomery’s reactions reveal the emotional intuition of an average moviegoer. With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. E-mail him at Randyjay7694@yahoo.com.

JOSEPH J. AIRDO

Bill Murray was originally considered for the role of Han Solo in ‘Star Wars’ (1977). The role went to Harrison Ford.

RANDY MONTGOMERY

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With more than 22 years of experience in media production, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. E-mail him at Movies@StanRobinson.org.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT “As you know, there are not a lot of movies about women and you might be the only woman in the movie if you get a part in one of them. To work with this cast, I almost said, “Yes” without even reading it. And when I did, I loved the role. I loved that she was kind of the town tramp. She was a lot of fun to play. She was very sassy.

ABOUT THE FILM

FILM! SECTION

Joseph: “The Look of Love” is the kind of movie that truly transports viewers to a previous point in time - in this case, the 1960s with an amazing amount of authenticity. That is to say that director Michael Winterbottom’s new biopic is the closest thing to a time machine that we will likely ever see. However, in spite of not only that but also the purity in the performances of its three stars, the film fails to fully impress as it glosses over the life of its subject rather than thoroughly probing into only the pertinent parts and unearthing some significant insight.

Joseph J. Airdo’s remarks represent the analytical perspective. With a bachelor’s degree in media analysis and criticism from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, Joseph contemplates the real life implications and applications of a motion picture’s themes in order to determine its existential purpose. E-mail him at joseph.airdo@gmail. com.

Checking in with Priscilla Faia If “Rookie Blue” wanted to revisit what being a brand-new cop is all about, Priscilla Faia’s portrayal of Chloe Price is filling the bill. Chloe actually had eight months on the job already when she transferred to 15 Division at the start of Season 4 of ABC’s Thursday police drama, but she’s still enough of a novice – with her relative inexperience matched by an unfiltered enthusiasm – that the show can dial back to where it began, while continuing the stories of such nowfamiliar officers as Andy McNally and Dov Epstein (Missy Peregrym, Gregory Smith). “I’m a big ‘Rookie Blue’ fan, and I was before (starting to work on) the show, so it’s great,” the abundantly friendly Faia notes. “I have to say that the writers have done such an incredible job this season. There’s so much happening. It’s such a large cast; I mean, we have 14 regular cast members, so it’s quite the task to give everybody their own stories while still maintaining the excitement with all of them.” For Chloe, that excitement partially has involved her budding relationship with Dov, which has been straddling a thin line between the personal and the professional. Faia cites that as “the best part” of playing her character, “getting to work with Greg. He’s so talented and so great, and he was so supportive and helpful to me.

“The first scene I ever filmed on the show was of us walking out to the (patrol) car, and it was a little bit nerve-racking. You’re working with a crew that’s been together for years, and you put your uniform on and it’s like, ‘OK. Let’s do this.’ ” Faia adds that she finds the connection between Chloe and Dov “really awesome. He’s rendered speechless by her, and I think that’s why she has her eye on him. He’s kind of a challenge.”

An 80-year-old Kolkata retiree is on a mission to get his neighborhood streetlights turned off after sunrise after he notices they stay on all day as well. Shyamal Uncle finds his sense of propriety upset by this wasteful expense of electricity. But finding someone to take him seriously proves a battle against an indifferent bureaucracy and a complacent status quo (and is just maybe a welcome distraction from his otherwise dull routine). WORDS FROM THE WISE

Love comes when manipulation stops, when you think more about the other person than about his or her reactions to you. When you dare to reveal yourself fully, when you dare to be vulnerable.

“It is very important to generate a good attitude, a good heart, as much as possible. From this, happiness in both the short term and the long term for both yourself and others will come.”

Blanco Tacos + Tequila, the popular contemporary Mexican spot known for its hand-crafted margaritas, beloved tacos and award-winning guacamole, will open its first Phoenix location in the city’s premier shopping destination, Biltmore Fashion Park. The boutique Mexican eatery by Fox Restaurant Concepts will join the street-side shopping district by the end of 2013. Occupying the former location of Ling & Louie’s Kitchen, Blanco will neighbor concepts Zinburger and True Food Kitchen, bringing a south-of-the-border sizzle to the mall’s existing culinary scene. “It’s no secret that we think the Biltmore area is a great place to open a restaurant,” said Sam Fox, Founder of Fox Restaurant Concepts. “It’s the city’s intersection for business professionals, shoppers and neighbors, who, we hope, will enjoy Blanco’s fresh approach to Mexican cuisine in an energetic environment.” Blanco opened its first location in Tucson in the spring of 2007 followed shortly by the location at Scottsdale’s Borgata in the fall of 2008. BEER!

The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

King James’ Valleywide CRAFT Beer & Food Guide 2013 Hello everyone, this is a very special week for us. This week, here in pages of AZ Weekly, we get the Cover Article and with it a Go to Guide showing love to the local bars and pubs that support our thirst for that artfully hewnbroth we call beer. This directory differs from previous articles as the focus is now valley wide and a tribute to the growing popularity of craft beer and pairing cuisine. Be sure to look for my Can’t Miss Menu Items “CMMI”, at many locations. No big breweries here, just the great local places that make everyday life so enjoyable. Lastly, this list is in no particular order as all of these places have rightfully earned their spot. With that said, let’s take a closer look.

The first pub on this year’s list is Flanny’s. Located in Tempe AZ, they feature 24 beers on tap and live for the art of small batch and local beer. Managing partners John Flanagan and John Jr. have it down to a science with an ever rotating beer selection and a food menu to match.Very importantly, as I have mentioned in the past, this is truly a family run operation as everyone in the Flanagan clan gets in on the act. To me there is something quite comforting about knowing the entire family is there making it all happen. Known valley wide for their Third Thursday Tap Takeovers, the place essentially becomes one brewery’s specialty tap room for the evening and let me tell you, it’s a party! Get there early because the beer doesn’t last long! CMMI: Steak and Blue Cheese Sliders.

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com

Being that we are in Tempe, I’d be remiss not to mention World of Beer on Mill Ave. If you have not been here yet, know that you are missing out! With 50 craft and local beers on tap plus five hundred different bottles to choose from, W.O.B strikes a perfect balance between hardcore, hard to find micro brews and easily approachable gateway beers that are perfect for those just finding their way into quality frosty beverages. No food here, but more important are their “Beer Education Classes” taught by Certified Cicerone Zach Fowle. For beginners and experts alike, this is the perfect opportunity to learn what makes beer so special. Check their website for class dates and see you there!

While we’re down there so to speak, another great new establishment on Mill Ave. is the HandlebarTempe. With 24 craft and import beers on tap, a 2000 square foot covered patio and great classic beer cuisine, Handlebar earns a solid spot in this register. Who can beat the age old pairing of quality beer with sausages and stone ground mustard? In Arizona, it seems everyone loves patio life and this place delivers with a beer garden unlike anywhere else in town. Julian Wright, the brain child and proprietor of this establishment, is well known locally in the restaurant industry as owner of other establishments such as LaBocca Urban Kitchen. Just because it’s such a cool joint, I will mention that LaBocca also has a great tap selection as well. CMMI: Smoked Polish Sausage or the Gruyere Burger

Moving into South Tempe, let’s check out Lucky Break. What’s cool about this establishment is that it’s a posh pool hall with plenty of craft beer and a great kitchen. How many pool halls do you know that have a nice selection of great beer on tap? This one does and the kitchen puts out burgers, fresh salads and appetizers to die for. Check it out soon and bring your cue, you’ll be glad you did. CMMI: Ultimate Grilled Cheese w/ Bacon

Ok, let’s stick to Tempe for a while longer and mention Boulders on Broadway and its brand new sister Spokes on Southern. As many of you know, Boulders has been around for quite some time and is well known for their pizza and beer selection. Being an older July 17th, 2013 - July 23rd, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

establishment, Boulders is quite comfortable in their own skin and features just about every different kind of beer on a regular basis. Not yet a craft beer drinker? No worries, they got you covered but will gladly help those who are curios to experience more. With beer superstars like barman Chris Shinn and manager Rob Knutsen always around, you can count on gettin’ what you need.

Spokes on Southern, Boulders brand new sibling, plays it a bit different. Sitting in the old Streets of New York Uptown Brewery location, there is tons of room for parties and an amazing lakefront patio. With a clean, simple easy food menu and 24 tap handles focused on craft beer, this is definitely a new hot spot for those seeking enlightenment. I have been there a few times, and really enjoyed it.

Still thirsty I hope? Awesome, let’s take the action down to Chandler

and check out The Hungry Monk. As Chandler’s only entry in this year’s list, the Monk as it’s known to regular customers is famous for two things, IPAs and Hot Wings. Owner operator Jim Lolli loves his hops and it shows every day as there are at least ten IPAs and pale ales to choose from at any given time. With 28 beers on tap, he does manage to keep a nice balance, but if it’s spicy food and bitter beer you seek, look no further. Also in the news, Jim has just opened a mobile version of his pub called the Traveling Monk. That’s right, it’s a food truck! Look for it at all of the better beer festivals and events in your area soon. CMMI: Garlic Parmesan Hot Wings

2nd floor, across From Jobing.Com Arena

Now it’s time for a quick journey out east to Queen Creek to visit the Wild Side Grill. Formally called Trophy’s, the Hunter’s Steak House, Wild Side still has a hunting and wild game theme, but with 18 beers on tap and a more relaxed menu and atmosphere. Fifteen of the tap handles are dedicated to craft breweries such as Odell, Firestone and Four Peaks while the food menu brings you great burgers, sandwiches and cool summer salads. Former managing partner Brett Dettler, now with soon to be open Wilderness Brewing has made sure the place stays in the family and true to craft beer. Having said so, I never want to hear anyone say there is no place to go in Queen Creek again! If you live out east this place is quite nice and on your front door step! CMMI: Crab Creole Burger

Right, we covered the east now let’s head north to Scottsdale where there is more to beer than meets the eye! First up is a great new place I discovered only last week called Daily Dose. Well off the radar but with 12 tap handles

July 17th, 2013 - July 23rd, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

dedicated to craft and local beer, quite a few craft bottles, a really chill patio and Superb Happy Hour Cuisine, you just can’t go wrong. With a gastro pub style menu featuring street style tacos, gourmet sliders and more, this should be Scottsdale’s craft beer and nosh happy hour destination. Did I mention that happy hour runs 4-8pm? Nice and late every day of the week. How many times can one person say Happy Hour in a paragraph? I may have broken the record, but trust me it’s worth it. Get down there for happy hour now! CMMI: Southwest Cheese Steak Sliders

Another Scottsdale newcomer to this list is Pig & Pickle, another gastro style pub where they truly Dig the Pig and I mean every part of the pig, just as it should be. I’m sure in the past many of you have heard me say that “Bacon is the perfect food.” With 6 craft beers always on tap, thirty or so bottles and an eye for pairing and preparing their cuisine with beer, the possibilities are almost endless. Pork and beer heaven plain and simple. Oh yes, almost forgot, their late night menu is perfect for pairing with a cold brew. CMMI: Shrimp and Grits with Asiago, Trinity & Tomato

Papago Brewing, also in Scottsdale has been doing the craft beer thing for quite some time. Although you see the title “Brewery” in its name, Papago qualifies for this list because their beer is made off premise and they do sell plenty of different beer from all over the world. Both on tap with 30 handles and in a multitude of bottles, Papago’s Continued On Page 37

Next up in Scottsdale is the Skeptical Chymist, a traditional Irish style pub with a big twist, lots of craft beer. After seeing the tide turning away from imports and onto Craft, the Chymist’s owners wisely brought in beer guy Remy De La Mora to churn things up a bit. Seems like a wise choice as now the bar features 14 craft beers on tap with hot sellers from breweries such as Firestone Walker, Deschutes and Napa Smith. Being an Irish pub, this

place should come good on the cuisine and that they do. I adore the Bangers and Champ and the Beer Batter Fish and Chips really ring my bell. Wanna drink great beer and see a proper football match? This is your place. CMMI: Beer Batter Fish & Chips

Time now to discuss Phoenix, as there are a few great newcomers here. First and foremost, the place to be in the Phoenix area is OHSO. Located in east Phoenix near Scottsdale, OHSO has 30+ beers on tap of which 18 are always LOCAL. With a menu chocked full of “feel good”comfort food items, two patios (front & back) and a Nano Brewery, this place has something to offer everyone. Yes you heard that right, Nano Brewery. They brew very small batch beers, two kegs at a time, to suit the needs of the community right in their own back yard. Speaking of community,

owner operator Jon Lane is a huge supporter of all things local and the people around him. This is evident in the plethora of fundraising and charitable events constantly happening there. Pretty cool ‘eh? CMMI: Hot Pastrami Sandwich w/ Bonus Burger or the All You Can Eat BBQ.

The people watching here is also, bar none, the best in town. Ever wonder who frequents those chic shave shops in your local mall? They all come here! The feel is big, open and clean with small white tiles on the back bar that bring back memories of old school English fish and chip shops. Having never eaten here, I don’t have a menu recommendation this go round, but I hear good things. Definitely a must see if you find yourself downtown.

The next step in our capitol city has to be Angels Trumpet. Located in central Phoenix, this establishment is rather new to the scene but has a lot to offer. With 31 craft tap handles, a focus on Belgian styles plus a huge dog friendly patio with outdoor seating and close proximity to the ball park, this is the perfect tailgate before or after the games.

So now let’s go bar hopping. Just down the street and around the corner from Angels Trumpet is Copper Blues at Cityscape. Located next to the Stand Up Live Comedy Theatre, it’s a place I always describe as the Hard Rock Café with craft beer. Remember way back when the Hard Rock was super chic? Copper Blues is now the boss and they have the gig down to a science. With 20

selection is hard to beat and the food is tasty as well. Known city wide for their thin crust, handtossed, beer dough pizzas, there are always great eats to be had here after a few cold ones, plus owner and Certified Cicerone Ron Kloth always keeps the rotation fresh and exciting. CMMI: Flammekuek Belgian Pizza

If you were to look in our ice chests this summer, these are the beers you’d find. We’ve handpicked three of our favorites for the season, plus for the first time in bottles, a special limited release originally crafted on our five-barrel pilot system. Typically available only in our Ft. Collins taproom, our pilot brews are experimental, hard to replicate and about as short-lived as a Colorado summer.

out of 60 beers on tap dedicated to LOCAL breweries, live rock and blues music, a modern atmosphere, great burgers and close proximity to everything happening downtown, this is a can’t miss when visiting the big city. CMMI: Copper Blues Signature Burger w/ Beer Mac & Cheese

Rounding out the line up in Phoenix is Bar Maximus. Known well around down town for their inexpensive take on “Unpretentious Fine Dining”, Maximus features10 rotating tap handles always dedicated to craft. Beers such as Sonoran’s White Chocolate Ale, Dogfish Head 90

Minute IPA, Left Hand Pole Star Pils and Stone’s Arrogant Bastard constantly keep it real. Food Specials include very upscale and artfully crafted five dollar lunch specials as well as great paninis and cheese boards. I love pairing beer and food here as it’s always a good time and always delish! CMMI: Prosciutto, Blue Cheese and Apple on Focaccia

Heading out into the Wild West, let’s now say hello to Ground Control in Litchfield Park. Part craft beer bar, gourmet coffee shop and kitchen, this place is an island oasis out in the west

July 17th, 2013 - July 23rd, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Next up way out west is Caballero Grill, located not far from Ground Control in Goodyear. I was quite surprised to find such an eccentric place in what might be considered a very blue collar area, but boy what a surprise! With 16 craft beers always on tap including a Signature IPA, this place is preaching the gospel every day and the cuisine is no different. For starters, there is a fresh ceviche bar, traditional street style tacos and parmesan or coconut crusted fish sandwiches on Brioche. Partners Anthony Geurriero and Paul Fratella have certainly drawn a line in the sand and “craft” begins there. Simply Heaven! CMMI: Pulled Pork Stacker and Ceviche Bar

Do you like BBQ? Before we go any further we simply must talk about Bryan’s Black Mountain Barbeque. Located in Cave Creek, this celebrated establishment carries a large selection of craft beer to pair with their legendary chow. With beers from breweries such as Deschutes, Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada, there’s something craft to please everyone enjoying all that carefully smoked meat. Last but not least way out in Anthem, we have Hops and Tannins. This place is sort of an enigma, wrapped in a sweater. It’s a home brew shop but with so much more. In addition to D.I.Y beer and wine supplies, they keep a large rotating selection of craft beer in the fridge for purchase and here’s the real kicker, they don’t have food but instead food making supplies. siiiieeede. With 25 all craft beers on draught, “No Crap On Tap” is the slogan here and you know it’s true as signs and posters all over the bar say so. The beer program here is run by local guru Ian Harwell and has been a huge hit sweeping up many area awards, accolades and media mentions along the way. So much so that Ian was invited to make his own beer at Odell Brewing in Fort Collins, Colorado. What did he brew? Why a coffee stout of course! What impressed me most about this place was the balance, great beer, a nice menu to pair and fantastic espresso to finish. Lastly, there the website says NO WIFI, at Ground Control, conversation is king. Not sure if this still holds true but just in case, be ready to chat! Honorable Mentions include the Yucca Tap Room. Known for many years as the “tap room without taps” they now feature a great craft beer selection on draught, live music and an eclectic, fresh food menu worth checking out. We must also give props to Taste of Tops. A great bottle shop and bar when the beer is

all that matters. Owner operator Greg Eccles is a longtime friend and believer of craft beer here in Arizona and has been selling it for as long as I can remember and long before it was cool. A true ground breaker, this list would not be complete without him. There you have it, my list of GO TO places valley wide for 2013. A bit different than last go round and with good reason as there are many new and exciting places to see. Over the course of this year, try to visit them all if you have the means. Craft beer is growing by leaps and bounds all over the valley and the ways to enjoy it are almost endless. Lastly, if you have a favorite place that I didn’t mention here please feel free to elaborate. There is always room for new friends at the table. Until Next week, Cheers!

Quiessence Chef Makes Next Move to Mill Avenue for a Limited Time Only! Their time with Quiessence may have come to an end, but Chefs Greg LePrad and Anthony Andiario are far from out of the Arizona restaurant scene. While LePrad is working to open his next venture in Sonoita, Andiario has taken on a venture of his own—Tempe’s first pop-up restaurant. Andiario has transformed Ncounter, a popular daytime breakfast and lunch joint, into his own pop-up dinner restaurant for three weeks. June 12 -13 was opening weekend, and the restaurant will operate Friday and Saturday nights through the end of July only.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Simply called, “Supper,” Andiario’s restaurant will serve 30-40 people each night it’s open. The dinner menu will change weekly and offer locally sourced ingredients with Andiario’s Italian flare. “It’s summer, and my menu will reflect the season,” says Andiario. “And yes, there will be summer pastas.” Wine pairings are available and the four-course dinner menu is priced per person. Check out next week’s menu at Facebook.com/SupperPopUp. For reservations, call (480) 4777248 or email TempePopUp@ gmail.com . July 17th, 2013 - July 23rd, 2013

Team to sell Yarnell 19 replica jersey T-shirts to raise additional funds

The Arizona Diamondbacks have raised $705,395 in support of the families of the 19 firefighters who perished fighting the Yarnell fire as well as members of the community who have been affected by the fires. The money was raised in various fundraising efforts that began two days after the June 30 tragedy and throughout the D-backs 10game homestand. The funds raised throughout the homestand will benefit the 100 Club of Arizona, American Red Cross, Prescott Firefighters Charities and other charities that will assist in the rebuilding efforts. 50/50 Raffle: The D-backs 50/50 Raffle, which is held at every home game, raised $354,061 in total, with $177,031 going to the raffle winners and $177,031 benefitting the charities. In addition, the D-backs set a 50/50 Raffle record on July 5 with more than $100,000 raised in one night. Online donations: More than 5,000 fans donated online for a total of $252,364. The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation added $200,000 with a

matching grant for a total of $452,364 raised. Fans who donated at least $19 online at dbacks.com/19 were entered into a raffle to win a team autographed “Yarnell 19” jersey. Online auction: The D-backs raised $76,000 through an online jersey and nameplate auction held online at dbacks.com/auctions during the homestand. The D-backs auctioned off the newly created game-worn and autographed black “Arizona” tribute jerseys that players and coaches wore throughout the entire homestand as well as autographed player and coaches nameplates that feature the “19” logo. Starting next homestand, fans will be able to purchase a T-shirt replica of the black “Arizona” tribute jerseys for $28 at the Team Shop located at Chase Field. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the T-shirt sales will benefit the 100 Club of Arizona, American Red Cross, Prescott Firefighters Charities and other charities that will assist in the rebuilding efforts. The T-shirts were made possible by a partnership between the D-backs, MLB Properties, Gameday Merchandising and Majestic Athletic and will be available while supplies last.

Robert Randolph & the Family Band’s Lickety Split is their best record yet. The raucous opener “Amped Up” is a dance party begging to happen, “Born Again” and “Get Ready” are undeniable, hip-shaking, Gospel rock of the highest order, and although the crunchy rocker “All American” seems to riff on Yes’s classic “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” this track is infinitely more fun. The funky rocker “Brand New Wayo” features Carlos Santana and solos from every member of the band, and it is clear from Randolph’s call outs that he had a ball making this song. Randolph dazzles on his pedal steel guitar and leads the charge with the sort of verve and energy we’ve never seen from him. If you’re looking for a dance rock party, you won’t find a better one this summer than Lickety Split.

One is a great country folk-pop debut for Sarah Miles. Miles has gorgeous vocals and knows how to write deeply personal songs which are still widely relatable. The folk-pop opener “Middle of Nowhere” features lyrics like, “If I could run a hundred miles/I’d still be/So far from anywhere worthwhile,” while the pop rock track “Bad Intentions” centers around an unhealthy relationship. But the lovey-dovey country pop song “Just So You Know” and the empowering “Take the Lead” demonstrate her knack for writing encouraging, happy material as well. Whether she is singing breathily on the swelling “Meet Me There,” or in a high register on the acoustic ballad “Gray,” you’ll be hooked in no time. One is a hell of a debut.

Brian Setzer Orchestra Christmas Rocks

The three-time Grammyaward-winner is a “Musician’s Musician” credited with consistently taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles, while single-handedly resurrecting two forgotten genres of music (rockabilly in the ‘80’s and swing in the ‘90’s). If that wasn’t enough, Setzer found tremendous success in redefining Christmas music for a generation desperately desiring something new and exciting around the holidays. The result was three bestselling holiday albums (Boogie Woogie Christmas, Dig That Crazy Christmas,Christmas Rocks!: The Best Of Collection) and an annual Christmas tour that has certainly become the most exciting annual rockin’ Christmas event on the planet. The Los Angeles Times calls it a show “whose sheer joy is irresistible!” Doors open at 6 p.m. Celebrity Theatre is conveniently located just 4 blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.
