By Jim Gressinger Two blocks east of our University of Arizona in the historic Sam Hughes Neighborhood you will find one of Tucson’s best B&B’s: Adobe Rose Inn. While suitable for just about any reason for a stay-over in Tucson, the Adobe Rose is particularly attractive to (1) travelers who have business at the University and (2) visiting parents of UA students given its proximity and the fact that, with prior arrangement, students can join their parents for one of best breakfasts in all of Southern Arizona. The Adobe Rose Inn has 6 rooms of varying sizes, each one unique, but all delightfully appointed in early Southwest. All have air conditioning/heating, private bathrooms, free wireless access, cable TV, coffee makers, robes, hairdryers, iron and ironing boards, original works of art and artifacts. In addition, some rooms have sofas, fireplaces, mini fridges, and microwaves. The Santa Rita Suite also has a private balcony and full kitchen with a large refrigerator. All the rooms are comfortable and pleasant, but my favorite for a brief stay is also the most popular. Named for the wife of Tucson pioneer, Sam Hughes, the

Atanacia Room not only has a stunning 8-foot tall stained glass window, and a kiva fireplace, but also a private doorway that opens onto the patio, pool, and hot tub area with its magnificent flowering bougainvillea adorning the walls. The pool area has a shaded patio table and is lined with flowering potted plants & Mexican wall art. The east patio is has colorful Mexican pots with flowering plants, plus shade from mature orange & lemon trees. The 2nd Street courtyard is similarly colorful & fragrant, but more private. Marion & Jim Hook are the innkeepers here. Two more professional, friendly, & knowledgeable hosts you are not likely to find anywhere. Like most couples who operate small inns, Marion & Jim have worked out a reasonable division of labor. Jim handles the bookkeeping. Marion is in charge of the kitchen.

They tell me that once a gentleman stayed with them a month and he swears he never had the same breakfast twice. But what she’s most famous for is her Adobe Rose Inn Buttermilk Scones, the best I have ever

Marion & Jim are seasoned travelers & artful conversationalists. Naturally, they attract a highly educated and worldly clientele. I don’t believe there’s a more interesting breakfast table in all of Tucson. Is the Adobe Rose Inn the Best Bed & Breakfast in Tucson? Maybe. REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

cut-a-ways or reverse angle shots. The dialogue, written by Richard Linklater and costar Julie Delpy, is sharp, crisp, and poignant at times without the ‘preparedness’ edge that sometimes leaks forward in filmmaking. In short, a powerful film on relationships and particularly Jesse and Celine’s next chapter in their lives.

‘Before Midnight’ Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy reprise their roles of Jesse and Celine who, 9 years after we last saw them, embody the realities of a long-term relationship - the weight of children, work, ambitions and disappointments. (R - 108 minutes) Stan: This installment in the ongoing story of Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) features long running takes with the two actors delivering their character nuances going from doubt, accusation, and self empathy to understanding, acceptance and admitting there it love at the base of their long term relationship, without the benefit of ‘cuts and roles’ to heighten the cinematic impact all within one long take. In theatrical presentations these are viewed from one stationary perspective based on your seat in the audience. Director Richard Linklater uses the camera in the same stationary perspective with 2 shots of the central characters subtly moving from one to the other with the visual interruption of

12

Randy: We first met Jesse and Celine nearly twenty years ago in 1995. Audiences and fans of the “series” have grown and matured, as have the characters Hawke and Delpy have made famous with art-house fans. This is far and away their best performances to date and the situation they find themselves in years after first meeting are real, relatable and believable. One of the best films of the year. Joseph: Like its predecessors “Before Sunrise” and “Before Sunset,” “Before Midnight” is deep, meaningful and realistically romantic. However, that last quality receives somewhat of a melancholy modification this time around. Whereas the first two films were hopeful, this one hits viewers - especially those who feel connected to these two characters with whom they have grown up for the past 18 years - in the gut like a ton of bricks. The insights and revelations about time’s impact on true love are devastating. But because they are reflections of reality rather than some fairy tale, they culminate in this franchise’s most emboldened ending yet.

thriller leaves viewers feeling oddly empty, as though they have eaten an exquisite meal of tiny-yet-tasty delicacies only to walk away from the table with their stomach craving something of more solid substance. Nonetheless, it is still worth seeing if - for nothing else - the sheer curiosity factor alone, as its forebodingly deathlike composure will render you unconscious.

‘Only God Forgives’ Ryan Gosling plays the owner of a Thai boxing club and smuggling ring whose brother is murdered. When his crime lord matriarch (Kristin Scott Thomas) forces him to settle the score with his brother’s killers, the respected criminal figure finds himself in the ultimate showdown. (R - 90 minutes) Randy: Having loved “Bronson,” I rushed out to see Nicolas Winding Refn’s latest project. That combined with the fact that his previous collaboration with Ryan Gosling (“Drive”), ended up at the top of my “favorites” list in 2011. In terms of style and cinematography; this one is a sure-fire winner. But the slow moving pace kills it and makes it a partial let down. The extreme violence certainly will not be for everyone. Joseph: “Only God Forgives” is thematically monumental, taking the striking cinematic style of “Drive” - writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn’s previous collaboration with actor Ryan Gosling - and multiplying it by a million. However, unlike that earlier effort, the new art house

‘Still Mine’ An elderly couple (James Cromwell and Geneviève Bujold) fight against local authorities in rural New Brunswick to build their final home. (PG-13 – 102 minutes) Stan: My own quote of ‘It’s the smaller independent films that are the real gems of filmmaking because we as cast and crew on a film, pour our hearts and souls into the project, and magical filmmaking happens’. As a ‘Boomer’ and a senior with profound thoughts of these later years, writer/director Michael McGowan presents a moving story tempered with the right amount of humor as very serious issues are addressed. The fact that it’s based on a true story adds that grounding layer of poignancy to exceptional performances. Randy: The Phoenix Film Festival this year was chock full of moving and memorable

Joseph: Anchored by a sterling performance from star James Cromwell, “Still Mine” is a deeply affecting motion picture that

will both break your heart and genuinely rejuvenate your belief in everlasting love. Writer/ director Michael McGowan tells a tale that, based on a true story, demonstrates that life does not fit inside of a box. It is somewhat slow moving but never the least bit boring as it arrests your emotions from beginning to end, beautifully manifesting what it means to truly treasure another person. Not everyone has the land on which to build a home for someone, but we all certainly have the equipment.

Kevin Costner’s

top Movies “The Upside of Anger” (2005): Costner lets himself go, to great effect, as a jock-turned-radio personality who romances a mother of four (Joan Allen) apparently deserted by her husband. “JFK” (1991): This really is director Oliver Stone’s film, but Costner is fine as District Attorney Jim Garrison. “Bull Durham” (1988): Costner cements his amiable-athlete image in this baseball comedy. “The Untouchables” (1987): Costner successfully reinvents Treasury man Eliot Ness, who pursues mobster Al Capone (Robert De Niro) and partners with a veteran Chicago cop (Oscar winner Sean Connery).

films. One of them being this heartfelt drama/comedy starring James Cromwell and Geneviève Bujold. The release date has finally come and has well been worth the wait. The story centers around the challenges of growing old and the power of love. Cromwell is likable and Bujold absolutely shines. Don’t miss this one; yet another small gem in a sea of blockbusters this summer.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actor James Cromwell (‘Still Mine’) By Joseph J. Airdo “Craig is far more empathetic, forgiving and accepting than I am. I have those traits in me but I often do not acknowledge them or exercise them. I was reading the new book by Tom Sadyak. He is on a spiritual quest and was saying that in his mind there are these two wolves - the dark, egotistical, self-destructive and violent wolf and the compassionate, empathetic, generous and grateful wolf. And he asks, ‘In your life, which wolf wins?’ The answer is the one you feed. “I think that, for the most part, Craig fed the lighter wolf. And I respect that immensely. And I have that as a goal in my own life. The man is no longer alive. He died soon after this picture was completed. But he did get to see the picture. And he seemed to be pleased with it. I met him when we were shooting in New Brunswick. I met him at his house that he built, which is extraordinary because he not only built the house but he sawed the logs and milled them, framed it, poured the foundation and roofed it. “When I was younger, the roles - although I had a number of wonderful ones - were less substantial. As I get older, I have a certain amount of gravity to bring. So people now cast me because I have a body of work. I project something. This was really one of the few times that I have had the chance to play an ordinary person. A role is only as rich as you make it. But this is a good role. This is a really good role. It is a wonderful role and I hope that I get a few more.” – James Cromwell

Well there you have it Tucson, the best of the best in the Southwest. I hope you find this list as much fun and as enlightening as I did in writing it. Hope to see you down south again soon. Next go round, let’s chat about all of your new and amazing breweries.

Last But Not Least, it’s time to talk about my favorite Tucson pub, 1702 Pizza. With fifty two, yes I said fifty two, ALL craft beers on tap this is my go to spot every time I find myself in town. Owner operator Austin Santos is one of the most passionate craft beer aficionados in the state and it shows. The beer selection here is bar none the best in Arizona, yes I said it, the entire state of Arizona. If you need proof, just pop in and see for yourself. The pizza here is also killer as one single slice is as big as your head and artfully crafted from scratch with beer in the batter. The feel here is totally college town but that’s ok when everything else is so bloody good! Make 1702 your first stop every time and life will find you well. CMMI: Hop Bread and a Build Your Own Giant Slice.

Time to get sporty, ever been to RJs Replays? With thirty two dedicated craft tap handles and all your favorite sports on thirty or so high definition televisions, this is an amazing place kick back for the day, catch the big game and enjoy a quality cold one. Not finding what you want on tap? No problem as there is a seemingly endless selection of bottles as well. Gotta be hungry by now right? The menu here is packed with great sports fare such as Mississippi Blues Fries and street tacos. Need more? The wings come out hot and spicy plus the Left Hand Milk Stout Burger SCREAMS Craft and the Baseball Bacon Wrapped Sirloin is truly fab! Hint: Have this steak smothered with blue cheese and heaven awaits. What more could you ask? Football season is right around the corner! CMMI: Left Hand Milk Stout Burger w/ Swiss Cheese.

Do you have any English in you? Would you like to? If so you gotta see the Frog & Firkin. This great little English pub has been around for quite a log time and has served the needs of the American craft beer community for as long as I can remember with a huge bottle plus draft selection of English and American brews. Pair that with freshly prepared fish and chips and you have a winner! Hungry? CMMI: Melted Brie w/ Roasted Garlic and The Queen’s Repast Sandwich.

Time to be crowned, Canyons Crown that is, a traditional British style pub with a twist. The beers are a great combination of British classics mixed with popular American craft, plus a sprinkle of big domestics for the girly lads. I love the rotating tap handles as there is always something fresh and interesting. This sort of thinking is not common in pubs of this type and was a nice surprise. So how about the chow? British food has long worn the scarlet letter in the minds of many Americans but Canyon’s Crown comes good with a splendid selection of English and continental menu items that work well with the beer. Fresh and modern dishes balancing classics such as fresh scotch eggs make for interesting choices and a great gastronomic time. Try it, I promise you’ll like it! CMMI: Pub Philly or Guinness Pie.

Hello Tucson! Glad to be here with you this week for the cover story on Craft Beer and how it relates to T Town. There are a ton of great places dedicated to craft right on your front doorsteps and each one of them are fighting the good fight to bring you quality brew and many with cuisine to pair every day. Look out for my Can’t Miss Menu Items “CMMI” at most locations for great menu suggestions. Now I can already hear your thoughts, who is this Wanka and why is he writing about Tucson Beer when he actually resides in the in the Phoenix East Valley? Well allow me to elaborate. In

order to bring it to you straight, I visited your fair town two weeks ago and did a whirlwind beer tour, seeing every listed place in a ten hour period and lucky to have a designated driver! Furthermore, I partnered with Austin Santos of the legendary 1702 Pizza and John P. Gestautas, Certified Beer Cicerone and Craft Beer Trainer at local beer distributor Golden Eagle to make sure I rang ALL the right bells. Lastly, this list is in no particular order as everyone here deserves their spot in this most important of registers. Having said so, let’s dive right in!

Borderlands Brewing, these guys and gals have their heads on straight! With twenty rotating craft tap handles including a focus on LOCAL and a large “To Die For” bottle selection of American and Belgian style craft brews, this is the new place for beer lovers of all skill sets and ideals. Located in an old warehouse, the place already feels broken in and comfortable. The staff is eager to tell you about what’s on tap and every customer I watched walk through the front door was as excited to see it for the first time as I was. I personally spoke with owner Rebecca Safford who was simply glowing. It’s a great feeling to see so much passion in a brand new place on both sides of the bar.Visit here often.

We’ll begin with newcomers Tap & Bottle. Located a short walk and right around the corner from

Next up, lets chat about Noble Hops. Wow, what a place. With twenty eight craft beers on tap plus at least one hundred and fifty or so (yes I counted) bottles to choose from, there is a beer at this Gastro style pub for everyone. What I really appreciate about Noble is their focus on pairing beer with cuisine. The menu is chock full of delicate small plates and robust dinner dishes that work well with the many available brews. Hosting dinners with breweries such as Firestone Walker, Stone and Left Hand plus many others just about every month, this pub shows it really has a handle on how beer and food work together. Even more amazing is their indoor/outdoor bar and patio which has to be seen to be believed. The mountain views are amazing. Date Night anyone? CMMI: Spicy Tuna Tower or Sweet Swine Big Plate.

Leinenkugel’s® Summer Shandy® is crisp, refreshing wheat beer brewed with natural lemonade flavor which makes it perfect for summer days and nights. So kick your summer off right and join us out here. Summer Shandy season is officially here.

Ok, let’s head to the HUB, a chic craft beer mecca and ice creamery, yes I said ice creamery, together in place with modern diner style fare that ticks all the right boxes. Do the beers and cuisine work well together? As a matter of fact, yes they do. Did they mean to create a beer menu that pairs so well with Shrimp and Grits plus the other current home style meals on the menu? I hope it wasn’t just a happy accident because it’s brilliant! With twenty all craft beers on tap ranging from import pilsners to India Pale Ales and American Milk Stouts plus rotating seasonal, there is even beer for dessert. Ever wonder how Left Hand Milk Stout would taste in an ice cream float? It’s hot outside so get down there and find out! CMMI: Warm Lobster Rolls or Home Made Chicken Pot Pie

Still thirsty I hope because there is plenty Tucson left to see! As an example, let’s check out Riley Craft Pizza & Drink. Dedicated to the art of modern minimalist Italian cuisine including pizza, fresh greens, Gourmet sandwiches plus craft beer, this bistro is making a real splash in popular beer circles. It was the first place a few regulars at 1702 mentioned to me as a “must see” on my last visit. The décor is clean and modern as the menu and the tap selection leaves nothing for want. With fourteen craft beers on tap such as Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Black IPA and the aforementioned menu to pair, this makes the perfect lunch spot while day drinking or dining on that all July 17th, 2013 - July 23rd, 2013
