Though suspended in air, the Evans Family SkyCycle features a large weight suspended underneath the bike, teaching riders about the principles of counterbalance and center of gravity. The suspended counterweight acts as a resisting force, lowering the center of gravity and keeping the bike in an upright position. Swaying of the cable and bike, caused by the rider’s actions, add to the thrill, but the rider is never in danger of falling.

Departures is a wonderfully moving film that presents the question that each of us has faced as working adults while weaving into the story, the aspect of family disconnections and acceptance. The question? What do you do when one reaches the decision of making a living at what one wants to do, or making that living by what one is good at doing… That’s the decision that Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki), a devoted cellist in an orchestra that has been dissolved, has to make. Daigo decides to move back to his old hometown with his wife to look for work and start over. He answers a classified ad labeled “Departures” thinking it’s for a travel agency. The job is actually for a “Nokanshi” or “encoffineer,” a funeral professional who prepares deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life. Although it pays very well, his wife and others feel the job is despicable and below his stature. As Daigo delves into the meaning of what he is providing, he begins to perfect the art of “Nokanshi,” acting as a gentle gatekeeper between life and death, between the departed and the family of the departed. Departures follows Daigo’s profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life, and, living. There wasn’t a dry eye after the screening, not tears of sadness, but tears of joy, and the cinematography is breathtaking! In Japanese with English subtitles. Starring Masahiro Motoki, Tsutomu Yamazaki, Ryoko Hirosue, Kazuko Yoshiyuki, Kimiko Yo, and Takashi Sasano. Directed by Yôjirô Takita; written by Kundo Koyama; Regent Releasing release; Rated PG-13 for thematic material; Runtime: 130 minutes.

animals and the conditions in which they are processed will shock you. The process is so shocking that the government along with the food companies have tried to pass legislation banning any type of filming or photography in the facilities. The producers and ranchers refuse to speak on camera, and the industry has seen somewhat of a deregulation based on pressure from these handful of companies.

Food, Inc. You Won’t Want to Eat By Randy Montgomery “You’ll never look at dinner the same way,” says the tagline for the new documentary Food, Inc. by filmmaker Robert Kennedy. Kennedy and the rest of the production team spend 94 minutes exposing the inner workings of our nation’s food producing industry. What they show us is at times eye-opening and disturbing. It may comes as a surprise to know that nearly all of the beef, pork and chicken in your locally grocery store all comes from just handful of different companies. Despite numerous labels sporting “farm fresh this,” and “home grown that,” most of the meat products consumers purchase on a daily basis is raised in production facilities that in no way resembles the wholesome graphics used on the packaging. In fact, acres upon acres of cows, chickens and pigs are squashed together, fed hormones and steroids and are raised solely for slaughter. While this may not come as a shock to most people, the way the animals are treated, the methods in which producers accelerate growth of the

Some of Food, Inc. makes you think twice about before buying that packaged chicken at the grocery store, but the film itself moves at such a snails pace, you find yourself wanting to get up and get a hot dog half way through to break up the monotony. The filmmakers certainly prove a point, but did it make me want to effect change? Not so much. The factory conditions are deplorable, but the example they use of local, farm raised meat wasn’t much better - a bunch of backwoods farmers processing food in unsanitary conditions with their hands, didn’t make me want to buy local. Food, Inc. is rated PG and is distributed by Magnolia Pictures. Now playing. Make it a “Food Evening” with these other documentaries and films that expose the current state of food production in the United States: Supersize Me (2004) Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock eats nothing but McDonald’s for thirty days. Here’s a shocker; he gains weight. (On DVD) The Real Dirt on Farmer John (2005) A farmer transforms his farm and elicits social change. (On DVD) King Corn (2007) Two college buddies move to Iowa and raised genetically altered corn. They follow the corn through production and find some disturbing facts. (On DVD)

Fans of Anime Unite: Evangelion 2.0 Hits Theatres By Randy Montgomery

Anime fans may be excited to hear the second installment of the Evangelion series is being released. For those not in the know, the Rebuild of Evangelion is a series of films being released over a several year span that is a remake/ reimagining of the Japanese anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance continues where part one left off, and will be followed by two additional films that will released in the next few years. With a running time of 108 minutes, internet buzz calls this film, “the greatest piece of serialized anime and giant-robot science fiction.”

“The Merry Gentleman”, an old school style “Who Done-it”, that works! Review by Stan Robinson

Actor Michael Keaton, who most remember as Beetle Juice (1988) and his two appearances as Batman (89’ -92’), makes his directorial debut as well as stars, in this story of a hitman who works as tailor in a men’s haberdashery, which is the perfect cover for his free-lance activities. He’s good at both, but is dealing with a dark secret. Enter a woman with a past (Kelly Macdonald), who unknowingly can place him at the scene of one of his “free-lance” assignments but is unaware of that fact. And then there’s the detective (Tom Bastounes who also produced the movie), who’s trying to put the pieces together to solve the mysterious deaths in his district! I was reminded of the ‘old school’ type of detectives like “Columbo” and “Kojak” as the detective in this story

uses “brains” rather than “brawn” and action, to get to the bottom of the “hits”! Tom Bastounes who stars as the detective and produced the movie, is trying to work into his schedule a visit to Phoenix for the opening on July 17th and may just do a “Q & A” after the film! Check at www. ScreenScene.org where I’ll post the details as soon as Tom calls to let me know! The Merry Gentleman Starring Michael Keaton, Kelly Macdonald, and Tom Bastounes. Directed by Michael Keaton; written by Ron Lazzeretti; Samuel Goldwyn Films release; Rated R for language and some violence; Runtime: 110 minutes.

“Unmistaken Child”

This documentary follows the 5-year journey of a Tibetan monk in search for the reincarnation of his master. The traditional stylish aspects of a documentary are put aside including a narrator’s voice. Instead we follow along as he is given some clues. It’s the subject and the journey that makes the film interesting. It’s the tradition and foundation of the Tibetan philosophy that the “master” starts as a child that grows into the meditative force that is the foundation. With a life of its own, this film captures the dignity, humility, and essence of the journey of enlightenment of the monk and the people he comes in contact along the way. As the film reveals, substance isn’t about how much and depth is not always as complex as it may seem. Its insightful and revealing as the monk strives to fulfill his quest. Written & directed by Nati Baratz; Oscilloscope Pictures release; Runtime: 102 minutes.

The Books:

Harry Potter is a name that has millions of follower’s world wide, from literary readers to moviegoers. Many of the film watchers haven’t read a Harry Potter book but are avid Potter loyalists. With the release of the current film, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, the anticipation is high, especially with the news that in the last novel by the author, major characters perish. British author J. K. Rowling, as well as her publisher, is keeping that news of “who”, under-wraps. Here’s a timeline for the books as well as the movies, as the sixth book in the series makes its theatrical premiere!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone; September 1,1998 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets; June 2, 1999 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban; September 8, 1999 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire; July 8, 2000 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix; June 21, 2003 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, July 16, 2005 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, July 21, 2007 Notable highlights of the books include: As of June 2008 the book

“Harry Potter”, An Overview of a Phenomenon

The basic theme of the books follow a young wizard named Harry Potter and his close friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. They attend the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The basic theme center’s around Harry’s struggle against the evil wizard Lord Voldemort, who killed Harry’s parents and has plans to not only rule the wizards of the world but also everyone without powers. In the fantasy world created by the author, children with inherent wizard abilities are sent to the boarding school to sharpen and fine-tune their skills, while they cope with the magical, social, and emotional elements that growing up brings. Each of the books is a one-year chapter in the life of Harry and his close friends, as they grow up and confront the magical obstacles of Lord Voldemort as he continues his quest for control of the world of wizards.

an indelible impact on modern day popular culture. From being credited as the main catalyst of the dance music revolution that took hold of the UK in the late 1980’s, to bringing DJ sets to stadiums via his opening slots for major pop acts such as U2, to remixing artists as diverse as Radiohead, Justin Timberlake and The Rolling Stones, the UK-born Oakenfold has consistently been recognized as an artist able to spread the gospel of club music beyond the confines of club culture.

Paul Oakenfold Claims #1 Spot on iTunes Perfecto Vegas Physical Album Now Available The internationally acclaimed DJ and producer who is currently on tour with Madonna, has unleashed his latest album Perfecto Vegas (Thrive/Perfecto). Amazingly enough, pre-digital sales of the album beat the late and legendary Michael Jackson to the #1 spot on iTunes’ dance chart and #1 on the Amazon digital album chart this week. The man simply cannot be stopped. After almost 20 years in the music business, workaholic Paul Oakenfold has proven yet again that he’s still at the top of his game. Where there is a demand, “Oakie” can still most certainly supply us with the goods. Oakenfold has been one of the few figures in dance music to have-made

Re-affirming this fact, legendary Queen of Pop Madonna -- renowned for her impeccable taste and ground breaking choice of collaborations with the world’s best producers -recruited Paul to produce brand new material for her forthcoming greatest hits album (slated for Sept ’09). “Cutting edge sounds combined with classic Madonna,” says Oakenfold of the new songs. Oakenfold is also set to embark on a lengthy world tour this summer that will cross 25 countries in just over two months, which includes opening for Madonna on all of her “Sticky & Sweet” UK and European dates. Oakenfold continues to work on his new original studio album, Pop Killer, which will be released in 2010. The project already features collaborations with The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, and Ce-Lo. His previous two solo releases have sold over 2 million units combined. Needless to say, the legendary DJ has made his claim to fame – and it seems he has no plans of slowing down anytime soon.

Enhance Mind, Body And Soul With The Power Of Music Music has been called ‘The International Language’ - a very simple thought with much meaning behind it. Even if you can’t speak the language of a country, you can move, sway, dance and most of all, enjoy the music of the country. We may not understand the words of a musical selection but we certainly understand the beauty and powerful mix of emotion it brings. Have you ever heard the saying, ‘Music soothes the savage beast?’ It’s true. Music can calm and revitalize us in ways even a lengthy nap can’t. Music holds the power to release endorphins, revitalize your mind and kick-start your body, all while elevating our moods above and beyond any worry on earth. Often used in exercise and dance, music has power to unlock your inner self and set your soul free. How many times have you turned to music to uplift you even further in happy times, or sought the comfort of music when melancholy strikes? Is there a link between music, moods & emotions? Yes indeed. Music affects us all. But only in recent times have scientists sought to explain and quantify the way music impacts us at an emotional level. Researching the links between melody and the mind indicates that listening to and playing music actually can alter how our brains, and therefore our bodies, function. It seems that the healing power of music, over body and spirit, is only

just starting to be understood, even though music therapy is not new. For many years therapists have been advocating the use of music - both listening and study - for the reduction of anxiety and stress, the relief of pain. And music has also been recommended as an aid for positive change in mood and emotional states. In general, responses to music are able to be observed. It has been proven that music influences humans in extremely good ways, from increasing those beloved feel-good endorphins to actually healing the mind, body and soul, both internally and externally. These effects are instant and long lasting. Music is thought to link all of the emotional, spiritual, and physical elements of the universe. Responses to music are easy to be detected in the human body. As the body becomes relaxed and alert, the mind is able to concentrate more easily. Music affects the amplitude and frequency of brain waves, which can be measured by an electro-encephalogram. It also affects breathing rate and electrical resistance of the skin. It has been observed to cause the pupils to dilate, increase blood pressure, and increase the heart rate. So, come Friday night, set yourself free inside and out. Ditch that next day morning hangover for a renewed, revitalized state of mind. Your mind, body and soul are waiting - and weekends are now more important than you ever knew.

To find out what happened, what’s happening and what will happen in the—OHMYGODITSSOFREAKINGHOTOUTSIDETHATIWANTTOBEBURIEDINANAVALANCHE—Valley, read on. Lounge, Jazz, Swing: Before this past Wednesday, I hadn’t visited Merc Bar in a while. As soon as I walked down the narrow entry, and stepped through the red curtains, I realized the error of my bar hopping ways. Dimly light, with plush seating, and one of the most knowledgeable bar staffs in the city, I quickly remember why I had declared Merc Bar among my favorite watering holes. I decided to stop in mid-week to catch a set of the lounge, acid jazz, and G-swing music I heard was taking over the bar Wednesday nights. Following the success of the “Red, White & Blues” party, the MJ Tribute, and Sundays evenings, JonnY Rogers and Chris Wright were invited to host a special session last Wednesday night. Roger’s and Wright, pulled it off again because the evening’s entertainment was a perfect complement to Merc Bar’s throw back speak-easy vibe. Whether you like classic cocktails done right or lounge beats, you’ll find both at Merc Bar. It is, in this Night Owl’s opinion, one of the most underrated lounges in the city. www. mercbar.com Fridays @ Incognito: The more I explore what the Valley has to offer, the more I’m pleased and surprised. It seems like very weekend I get to discover something new about the Valley whether it’s where to get the best food after 2 a.m., the best place to shop on the cheap, or where to find the best dance parties. I recently was let in on Social and Unity Friday nights at Incognito. Located at Thomas and 24th Street in Phoenix, Incognito features 13 of the Valley’s best house DJ’s spinning all types of house music including funky, Chicago, progressive and more from 9 p.m. until 4 a.m. The place is a bit of dive, but full of friendly faces shaking off the week. See you on the dance floor! www. socialphx.com Nothing Bundt Cake: So I had a summer swimming pool party extravaganza thing at my place. I’m a griller, but not a baker and I needed a desert. As a killer desert is essential to pleasing the people, I decided to get something from Nothing Bundt Cakes.

Ever heard of it? Well you should because they are awesome (celebs even love em), and helped make my party go down in annals of backyard swimming parties (again…). I got the marble which was moist yellow cake with a big chocolate swirl topped with some awesome frosting that was cream cheese-based. Nothing Bundt Cakes has a variety of flavors including lemon, white chocolate raspberry and red velvet. The other great thing is that the presentation is beautiful so they’d make a great gift, and the ladies love em! For more info and to get your bundle of bundt yumminess, visit nothingbundtcakes.com. Phoenix Drivers Safe?: Okay, we don’t usually comment on regular news, but did you see that Phoenix was ranked #1 in safety by Allstate? I call bullshit. It may be #1 in safety, but it is also #1 in sucky drivers who are old, tourists, from other countries, just to moved to Arizona from another state or some combination of all of them. It is also #1 for idiots who drive less than the speed limit in the left lane of the 101. Thank you for listening to our rant… ROLLER DAMES!: After watching UFC 100, I’m pumped! I want to see roughhousing, I want to see action, I want to see a scantily clad woman give a whip and then elbow the jaw of her opponent all while on roller skates. Hey, I’m in luck! The Arizona Derby Dames female roller derby league is having a double header roller derby on July 18th at Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum. I’ve NEVER been to one, but in the heat of July, something is drawing me to it. I like unique experiences, and I think this’ll fit the bill. A few beers, a few off color comments, watching some roughhousing; I’m in. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $20 for VIP—can’t beat it. And you’ll get to see The Bombshells vs. The Brutal Beauties and The Schoolyard Scrappers vs. The Runaway Brides. I think I’m going to cheer for the Schoolyard Scrappers. I’m excited, I really am. Plus this experience will prep me for Drew Barrymore’s (my actress crush) new movie “Whip It,” which is supposed to come out in the fall. For more information or to check out the ladies and the league visit azderbydames.com. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

In the words of DJ Scratchy McSpinsworth “In a postmodern society, DJs are a dime a dozen. And for this reason, I fight to be as unique as possible. It is well known that a disc jockey’s job is to spin many artists’ records in one evening and I know that I am not playing anything that hasn’t been heard before. Therefore I create unusual “mash ups” to receive a positive response from my audience. I enjoy adding my own twist to selections while reaching my listeners through the music I mix. After receiving an upbeat response from the crowd, I find myself enjoying my art and playing at my best. If I’m not having fun, my job as a DJ is not worth my time. Since a DJ’s greatest challenge is to ensure that their audience is having the best possible experience, music selection is key. I find that the more diverse the crowd, the harder my responsibility of creating a specific atmosphere becomes. My partnership with DJ Delikacy is an advantage in this regard. If I feel that I am

not reaching the crowd, Delikacy will have his own idea of what may capture the audience. Working as a team with Delikacy has assisted in our success over the last five years and we plan to continue to give patrons an experience that will keep them coming back. In the words of DJ Delikacy Vast music knowledge and quality track selection, to me, is the most important aspect of DJing. Having been around the music scene for the last twenty years and DJing for the last ten, I’ve seen music trends come and go, but great songs are timeless. I don’t stick to one style of music, I love so many genres of music. I like to go through the whole spectrum from funk, soul, reggae, hip-hop to modern, indie and classic rock. With no obvious beginning or ending, it’s all about using your imagination and not being a prisoner to the trendy sound of the moment.

Golf sensation Tiger Woods continues to make efforts to attract young fans to go see the game of golf in person. With ticket prices through the roof in other traditional sports such as baseball and basketball, Woods wants to make sure young upand-comers are not closed out from enjoying a day on the links to watch the pros do their thing. “We don’t want to have what happened at Yankee Stadium,” Woods said at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., site of the AT&T National which he hosts. “Tickets are so overpriced that you can’t bring the family. We want to have everyone come out and enjoy being in a family atmosphere, walk around, have a good time and not have it cost an arm and a leg.” Woods’ tournament, “The AT&T National” is admitting children under 12 free, following suit with a growing trend in golf. Most recently,

the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black on Long Island followed the thoughtful trend allowing kids under 12 in for free, as well as offering reduced rates for teenagers. The British Open, another major tournament played by the best in the game, long has had a policy of free admission for kids as well. Woods said letting children on the course for free gives them exposure to the game they might otherwise never enjoy. “We want to have kids come out here and enjoy golf,” Woods said. “A lot of these kids may not have an opportunity to ever be on a golf course or play golf. This is their introduction to the game, and we want it to be memorable. We want them to come out.”

Mixed Martial Arts Continues to Grow at an Exponential Rate Mixed Martial Arts continues to set records in live gate attendance and on Pay-Per-View. Confident in the dynamic appeal of their product, major promoters are visiting cities they’ve never before visited, or in the words of UFC’s President Dana White, “bringing the fights to the fans.” Grassroots organizations are expanding into every region of the country. New MMA gyms and training facilities are sprouting up overnight and virtually anyone is but a short drive away from seeing MMA action live and in person. Mixed Martial Arts is muscling its way in with corporate sponsors, payper-view specials and star-flecked audiences. The fourth episode of Spike TV’s hit series, The Ultimate Fighter 3, out-delivered more men in the hard to reach demographic of males age 18-34 than the combination of the NBA Playoff on TNT, the NHL Playoff on OLN, and a marquee MLB match-up between the Red Sox and Indians on Thursday, April 27. The Spike TV telecast drew 799,000 Men 18-34 while the three combined telecasts drew 725,000.

Ex-Boxers, NCAA Champion Wrestlers, Decorated Soldiers, Former Olympians, Construction Workers, Bartenders, Teachers - some even have Master’s Degrees! The UFC broke the Pay-Per-View industry’s all-time record for a single year of business and generated over $220 million in revenue during 2006. MMA coverage is greater than ever. UFC, Affliction, Strikeforce, Dream, and K-1 all have television deals not only on pay-per-view, but networks such as Spike, ESPN, MyNetworkTV, Fox Sports, and premium cable channel Showtime. Not only is MMA bigger than boxing today, but it’s also bigger than boxing ever was in terms of the Pay-Per-

Here’s why….. MMA is the fastest growing sport in the country, appealing to the coveted demographic that advertisers have been losing steadily - males ages 18 to 34.

View numbers. In 1999, boxing set an all-time record with just over $200 million in combined Pay-PerView revenue. In 2006, the UFC alone (not counting Pride, K-1, etc) broke that record with an amazing $220,000,000 in PPV buys. Valley residents are in a perfect position to enjoy Mixed Martial Arts and its incredible rise to the top of the sporting universe, as ‘Rage in the Cage’ brings events to the valley many times throughout the year. There are several top-notch MMA Academies around the valley for people of all ages to train and learn these proven self-defense and technical fighting techniques. And of course, the Mandalay Bay, MGM, Palm and Hard Rock Casinos, right next door in Nevada, host the Superbowl of MMA… ‘The Ultimate

Fighting Championship.’ In short, it’s good to live in the valley with full access to one of the greatest sports on the planet…. Mixed Martial Arts.

Simonis Billiard Cloth that is… Simonis is legendary for providing superior cloth for the billiard industry. Founded in 1680 (no, this is not a typo), a century before cloth was used to cover billiard tables; Simonis craftsmen in Belgium were perfecting the craft of weaving quality wool. Throughout its 300 years in existence, the distinctive quality of Simonis wool cloths has never been duplicated. You do not need to be a Pro to feel the difference in how this cloth plays and why it is worth the extra money. In addition, there are numerous advantages well beyond improved play that benefit even the most novice players. For instance, the tight weave repels liquid spills and stains, reduces ball burns, and lasts 2-3 times longer than ordinary cloth, making Simonis cloth a great value

G CUE

for your investment. Cloth is the least understood and one of the most important parts of the game. You can buy a great table, but you cannot play your best game without superior cloth. Since cloth last anywhere from 2-8 years, depending on how often you play, why not spend the extra $$$ and play the game the way it was intended to be played. Test it for yourself at your local Billiard Room and feel the difference. That will convince you. Remember, you are only as good as the equipment will allow you to be.

Think You Know Water Inside and Out?

purification processes: 1) Resin bed softens water; 2) Charcoal filter removes dissolved contaminants;

Get Real.

Real Water™ is the only alkalized, antioxidant bottled water with stable negative (-) ions on the market today. The purified water will help move your body to an alkalized state by removing acidic toxins. Real Water’s proprietary E2-Electron Energized technology adds electrons to the water through electrical restructuring at the end of the purification process. The added negative (-) ions act as a powerful antioxidant to neutralize harmful free radicals and aid in cellular hydration. Quick Facts: •

Your body is over 70% water.

Most water and water-based products are damaged because the water has traveled through pipes, filtration devices and various systems. During these travels, it has been stripped of electrons (-).

Most bottled and tap water is very acidic.

How is Real Water™ made? Real Water™ starts with municipal water that is approved by the Southern Nevada Health District and regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for human consumption. The water is then run through seven different

3) Double stage reverse osmosis system; 4) De-ionizing bed that removes any latent dissolved ions; 5) Ultra Violet (UV) light sanitizing unit to kill any potential bacteria; 6) Ozone chamber to further kill any possible bacteria; 7) One micron filter removes any remaining particles or bacteria.

It is after these seven purification steps that the water is treated with the E2 Technology™ which adds in trace amounts of magnesium and potassium for a bottle of water that is alkalized and maintains a stable negative ionization. It’s widely known how crucial water is in our lives. We also know we need as much as we can get in our system. Your body is indeed your temple – and Real Water is likely to be the brand new beginning to your look good, feel good lifestyle! Real Water is available at Whole Foods Markets in the Southwest, and online (with no shipping costs). The retail price is $1.50 per 16.9 fl oz bottle.

California’s Napa Valley wine region is as close to a house hold name as I can think of. We see it on wine labels, read about it in books and magazines and hear about it on TV. When you see Napa Valley on a wine label what does it mean to you? Let me share some of the thought that come to my mind when I think of Napa Valley. A visit to Napa Valley has cast a spell on many people causing them to make staggering life changes. Some believe they’ll be a great winemaker, some dream of becoming a millionaire; still others love the land and the agricultural life. I on the other hand simply love the diversity and quality of the wine produced there. Each time I visit Napa Valley whether it’s via Plane, Automobile or Glass I am reminded just how much I enjoy the wines from this special place. Napa Valley really isn’t as big as the numerous wine labels might imply. The fact that all of those wineries & wines come from an area roughly 30 miles long and 5 miles wide is remarkable. What makes all of these wines possible is a question with many answers. Napa Valley has been blessed with many different climates and soil types all wrapped up with lots of sunny days. This is most evident by the number of smaller AVA’s in side this already small area. An “American Viticultural Area” is quickly defined as a wine growing area that has distinctive characteristics in its growing conditions i.e. soil, climate etc…. You can enjoy Zinfandel from Chiles Valley to the west, a rich Merlot from Oakville in the center or an elegant Pinot Noir or ripe refreshing Sauvignon Blanc from Carneros to the south without leaving Napa Valley. I have only mention 3 of the 14 AVA’s with in the Napa Valley AVA and we already have a wine for almost every one.

I can talk about the diversity of wines until I am blue in the face, but when I talk about Napa Valley I have to make special mention of Cabernet Sauvignon. Napa Valley is unquestionably one of the great places in the world to grow Cabernet Sauvignon. One of my favorite tasting events is one that involves a selection of cabernets representing several of the great Napa AVA’s. This is an experience you’ll remember, which is a good thing because it won’t be cheap! Gather a small group of friends, not so big that you don’t get a good share of the wines and a bottle each from 4 to 6 AVA’s. Try them all together, side by side if you have enough glassware. Then you will see while the world has been talking about Napa Valley for the past 30+ years!

The Law of Distraction and InterruptionTM ·

Life’s Distractions, if you allow them, will keep you from achieving your goals and dreams.

·

Interruptions either slow you down or completely stop you from what you set out to accomplish.

I feel that Technology is the Ultimate Distraction and Interruption. The phone rings and no matter what you are doing, you rush to answer it. You answer the phone and it’s your friend who needs you now! You drop what you are doing and go to his house to find out it’s not the emergency he made it out to be. You receive an email from your boss that indicates she needs you to drop everything you are doing and look up some information for her. So you drop everything and after 45 minutes of research, she emails you again and tells you she found what she was looking for. These are only just two examples of how technology will interrupt and distract you. Technology has affected society in a number of ways. Technology has helped develop more advanced economies, including today’s global

economy, and supposedly has allowed us to have more leisure time. Various implementations of technology influence the values of a society and new technology often raises new ethical questions. Examples include the rise of the notion of efficiency in terms of human productivity, a term originally applied only to machines. Technology can create wonderful and useful tools, but it can be the ultimate distraction and interruption. Nissan Maxima

Picture and Review by Chad Haire The previous Maxima had a reputation as being a great sport sedan, so I wanted to get the new updated model for comparison. This is now a front-wheel drive sedan. The advantage is more interior and trunk room. The disadvantage is that most of the weight is moved to the front, which results in a slight loss of handling when taking fast corners. Fortunately, the factory engineers did a good job of balancing the chassis, so the Maxima still handles well. The ride quality is very smooth. There is a sport suspension option, but I think the standard set-up is more practical. The only engine is the proven 3.5 liter as found in the 370-Z sports car. It’s hooked to a belt-driven CVT

transmission. As a rule, I don’t like these gearboxes, finding them noisy with slow shifting. But again, the engineers did a great job on this one. It’s quiet, responds to commands and has a manual-shift override divided into six-gear ratios. I clocked a 0-60 mph time of 6.1 seconds in manual mode and 5.8 seconds in the automatic “drive” setting. Fast enough for me. While the Maxima has been slightly “detuned” when compared to the previous versions, it’s still a nice sporty sedan. The base Maxima starts at about $26,000. Mine was a loaded SV that came with about everything, so it hit $33,900.

Reprise recording artists Cavo will join the newly-created Monster Energy second stage line-up of Mötley Crüe’s hard-rock summer tour extravaganza Crüe Fest 2, which begins July 19th in Camden, NJ. The tour will make a stop in Cavo’s hometown, St. Louis, on August 11th, which is also the release date of their major-label debut album Bright Nights * Dark Days. Cavo is burning up the Rock radio charts with their propulsive debut single “Champagne.” After hitting airwaves in April, the track has reached an audience of more than 53 million, scoring over 150 radio adds amongst all Rock formats. The single has claimed the No. 3 slot on Active Rock, broken into the Top 10 on the Mainstream Rock Chart, and gone Top 30 on the Modern Rock Charts. “Champagne” is also in rotation on

Rock with Dokken, MSG, L.A. Guns & More this Friday!

Sanderson Music Series welcomes the Rock Til We Drop Tour featuring DOKKEN and MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP (MSG) with special guests L.A. GUNS and BANG TANGO at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 17th at Celebrity Theatre. The 80s saw the rise of one of the most respected vocalists of the decade, Don Dokken. With his unique voice and passionate style, he helped make the band DOKKEN one of the most dominant and creative forces in hard rock. Lightning Strikes Again 2008, Dokkens debut album for Rhino Records, marks a return to form that rivals the group’s past platinum successes, such as the bands 1985 certified platinum album Under Lock And Key. Our goal, says Dokken, was

“Champagne,” which had the highest R&R Active Rock chart debut for a new artist since Avenged Sevenfold’s “Bat Country” in August 2005, is the first single from Cavo’s debut album. Bright Nights * Dark Days--produced by David Bendeth (Breaking Benjamin, Paramore, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus)--is a passionate collection of powerful rock-and-roll and keenly felt lyrics. The album also includes the track “Let It Go,” which is featured on the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen soundtrack, released June 23rd. Cavo, which features singer Casey Walker, guitarist Chris Hobbs, drummer Chad La Roy, and bassist Brian Smith, is currently on the road before the launch of Crüe Fest 2.

Fueled, as ever, by Dokkens formidable lead vocals, standout tracks include Standing On The Outside, Oasis and Heart To Stone, all of which capture the potent crush of barbed-wire riffs and razorsharp melodies. MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP (MSG) co-headline the tour with their In The Midst of Beauty World Tour. German guitar great Michael Schenker debuted with the Scorpions on their debut album Lonesome Crow at age 15 and was lauded at the time for his mature technique. After Scorpions, Schenker joined UFO. He wrote the music for most of UFO’s major label debut album Phenomenon. In 1979, he founded the MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP. In 1990 Schenker briefly played guitar for the band RATT appearing on their MTV Unplugged performance. Schenker is famous for his half-black, half-white

Country Singing Sensation Ashley Monroe To Open for Jewel at Mesa Arts Center Ashley Monroe, American country music singer-songwriter and native of Knoxville, Tennessee will be opening for Jewel here in Phoenix on Friday, July 17th performing live and acoustic. Ashley has released two solo singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, reaching #43 with “Satisfied” and #37 with “I Don’t Want To”, which featured singer Ronnie Dunn, of Brooks and Dunn. Both singles are featured on Monroe’s debut album, which was released on May 19, 2009. Monroe has co-written for Carrie Underwood and collaborated with Ricky Skaggs on The Raconteurs single, “Old Enough”, which was released in bluegrass form and as a music video currently in rotation on CMT. A contemporary folkie renowned for her expressive, crystalline voice, singer/songwriter Jewel was among the most successful female performers to dominate the pop charts throughout the 1990s. Working with producer John Rich of Big & Rich, Jewel subsequently refashioned herself as a country singer for 2008’s Perfectly Clear, which debuted atop the country albums charts. It comes as no surprise that Jewel, an acclaimed American singer, songwriter, actress, poet, painter, philanthropist and daughter to an Alaskan cowboy singer-songwriter, finds herself in the embrace of country music for the release of her seventh career album, Perfectly Clear.

Jewel has always been a charismatic live performer, earning the respect of other singer-songwriters such as Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan and Neil Young, who, not only invited her to open their shows, but mentored her in the early phases of her career. Her singular style and beauty continuously land her on the covers of such diverse magazines as Time, People, Entertainment Weekly, Vanity Fair, InStyle, Glamour and Seventeen. Stuff Magazine listed her among its ‘102 Sexiest Women in the World’ while Blender went further, crowning her ‘rock’s sexiest poet.’ It all goes down Friday, July 17th at 7:30pm. Tickets to the show will likely go fast, as both Ashley and Jewel will encounter an endless sea of eager, excited and enthusiastic fans on this special night of country music here in the valley. Tickets are available through the Mesa Arts Center Box Office at 480-644-6500 or online at mesaartscenter.com.

From the remote ranch of her Alaskan youth to the triumph of international stardom, the three-time Grammy nominee, hailed by the New York Times as a “songwriter bursting with talents” has enjoyed career longevity rare among her generation of artists. ‘Tears For Fears’ Happy and Confident as Ever (Pop Icons to Bring Years of Success Back to the Valley)

Eighties pop icons TEARS FOR FEARS announced a limited seven date U.S. tour for mid-July, which includes a show at the Valley’s own Celebrity Theatre at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21st. Tickets for the Sanderson Music Series events are still available. With chart toppers such as Everybody Wants To Rule The World, Shout, and Sowing The Seeds, TEARS FOR FEARS sold more than 22 million albums worldwide (including over 8 million in the U.S. alone). Recently, American Idol finalist Adam Lambert performed Tears For Fears (TFFs) Mad World, and received a standing ovation from Simon Cowell. After only four days the various Youtube videos of the performance approached 1,000,000 hits. This was not the first time a cover of Mad World made it to the

top. In 2003, an acoustic version of the song by Michael Andres and Gary Jules was featured on the cult movie Donnie Darko and reached the #1 position in the U.K. TFFs latest album Everybody Loves A Happy Ending signaled one of the most welcomed reunions in pop music for the duo behind the band, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Formed in the early 80s, Britain’s TFF was always more ambitious than the average synthpop group. Their very name was derived from Arthur Janov’s primal scream therapy, and his theories were evident throughout their debut album, The Hurting, which became a major success in the U.K., generating no less than three Top Five hit singles. Two years later, the group released Songs from the Big Chair,

which became a huge hit in America, rocketing to the top of the charts on the strength of the hit singles “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and “Shout.” Its follow up, “Seeds of Love” generated the smash hit of the same name. Smith left the group in 1992 to pursue a solo career.
