Cathy Breslaw: “Light Moves”

presented by West Valley Art Museum Tuesday – Sunday 10am – 4pm Thru Sept. 20, 2009 This show will amaze some and confuse others. The materials out of which the art is made are not conventional. The plastic mesh, used to construct the ‘paintings’ is manufactured by extrusion molding machines and made into garbage bags for Japan. This material is also made into bags for carrying vegetables and fruit for the grocery industry, as well as floral wrappings for flower distributors in South America. Certainly not the ordinary paint and canvas. Yet, the results are as compelling as any other expression in more common materials.

Sharks 3D

presented by Arizona Science Center Sunday – Saturday Noon Ongoing Arizona Science Center, Jean-Michel Cousteau and 3D Entertainment, invite audiences to a stunning, immersive diving experience with Sharks 3D, the first-ever shark-themed 3D IMAX film. This 3D film dives viewers into the deep and explores the world’s oldest predators, while explaining the essential role they play in the health of our planet. Each shark explored is either endangered or critically endangered, from the endangered giant Pacific manta ray to the critically endangered whale shark, or the critically endangered large tooth sawfish, which isn’t a fish at all!

Fashion and Relationships Examined in Valentino By Randy Montgomery Fashion and/or documentary fans may find Valentino: The Last Emperor quite fascinating. Born in 1932, Italian Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani became one of the worlds most famous fashion designers. Produced and directed by Matt Tyrnauer, a correspondent for Vanity Fair, the film follows the final two years of Valentino’s career and his relationship with business partner and companion Giancarlo Giammetti. In addition, viewers get an inside look into the fashion industry. After receiving critical press worldwide, having its premiere at the Venice Film Festival and screening at Toronto, Valentino: The Last Emperor is opening at Harkins Theatre Valley Art in Tempe.

Esther Makes This Orphan Worth Seeing By Randy Montgomery There’s something wrong with Esther. Boy is there. Esther may not have turned out to be the best choice for adoption at the church-run orphanage, but she sure makes for a good horror movie. Actually, Orphan is more of a psychological thriller filled with intense moments and edge of your seat anticipation than gore and

Kate and John Coleman (Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard) have two children and were expecting a third. After losing their baby in child birth, the couple, still reeling from their loss decide to adopt. Kate is still devastated and is suffering from post-traumatic stress, but is willing to bring a new member of the family into the house. They visit a local orphanage where John immediately takes a liking to a shy, yet highly artistic and intelligent 9-year whose charm wins him over. Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) reciprocates the feeling and proves to be a perfect choice. The charm that won John over fades as soon as Esther enters the home and begins demonstrating odd, and eventual violent behavior. Kate immediately sees the manipulation and finds Esther’s actions a threat to her other two children. John believes Kate’s inability to connect has to do with the trauma she has recently endured.

fright. A good spooky movie should always rely on real fear than blood and guts, and Orphan does just that. There are no masked maniacs or supernatural creatures, simply a little girl with an unexplained past. Now that’s creepy.

Orphan is an intelligently written thriller and features strong performances by Farmiga and Sarsgaard and Fuhrman is worthy of a nomination come award season. While parts of the film are far from original, the story takes enough twists and turns to place it in the history books as one of the most entertaining and shocking entries to hit the genre in decades. Esther has a secret as the trailer suggests, but you’ll never figure it out.

“3-D on DVD’s, Yea or Nay?” By Stan Robinson Just a short time ago, the movie going market had tapered off and DVD sales where up, substantially. Especially with the shortened window of the time from theatrical release to DVD. Blu-Ray came into the mainstream, which showcased the HD quality of the next generation of TV and DVD’s had a firm hold in the household. With the enhanced 3-D process and polarized lenses (unlike the red/blue glasses of old), movie goers once again returned to the local cineplex for the 3-D experience. The added cost of 3-D for a movie is about $15 to $20 million more than regular 2D productions. The 3-D in theatres is very impressive technology over the previous process of years ago. One point, the 3-D glasses are not interchangeable. I brought two different pairs with me to a recent 3-D screening. One pair I really like for comfort, although the 3-D effect wasn’t present, the shadow effect was gone. The 2nd pair didn’t work at all. The pair provided of course worked fine! 3-D on DVD’s is the next step in home movie viewing. To duplicate the 3-D experience of the theatre in home theatre systems is the challenge. No matter how large the TV screen, the theatrical-to-DVD conversion apparently downgrades 3D movies to lesser-quality Anaglyph technology. “Anaglyph 3D DVD’s are viewed with red/cyan or red/blue glasses

and work best on HD-TVs or computer monitors due their better color re-production”. Although 3D-at-home equipment and delivery is currently available, there are no standards guaranteeing content will render accurately on all 3D-ready devices. Some digital analysts say that a profitable 3D home-theater market won’t develop for another five to seven years. Cost is one factor using the $1,499 to $4,999 of Mitsubishi’s new 3D-ready TV line as an indicator. Companies like Kerner New York, a 3D production firm from Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic, continue to design 3D-at-home devices.

Industry experts estimate there are about 2.5 million 3D-ready TV’s currently in homes of the 114.5 million with HD-TV, so, is 3-D on DVD’s, Yea or Nay? I watched “Coraline” on 3-D DVD with the glasses (green/pinkish lens) that came with the DVD, on my Mac Mini with a 19” LCD widescreen monitor that’s 8 months old, it worked! Am I going out to get a 3D ready TV? Not yet, I’m remembering the VHS vs Beta battles of old. For the time being, 3D DVD’s work fine on my Mac…

Mears is the Director of Operations at Sportman’s Fine Wine & Spirits, with multiple Valley Locations (www.sportsmans4wine. com). If you have questions or comments, please write to nate@ sportsmans4wine.com.

In my years at Sportsman’s Fine Wines & Spirits, I have fielded thousands of wine questions. It is my hope to spend the next few weeks addressing the more frequently asked questions. If you have a question you’d like to read Phoenix about please feel free to e-mail me 3205 E. Camelback Rd at the following address: nate@ (602) 955-WINE sportsmans4wine.com Glendale But first, let me take a moment 6685 West Beardsley to introduce myself, my name (623) 572-WINE is Nathan Mears, and I am the Director of Operations at Scottsdale Sportsman’s Fine Wines & 10893 N Scottsdale Road Spirits. For the last twenty Scottsdale 85254 years or so, I have worked in the 480- 948- 0520 food and beverage industry, I am passionate about all things food and wine related, and I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm with you. This week is short and sweet. A particularly “hot” topic here in the desert is, “How long can I leave my wine in the car?” The answer is: you can’t. Wine should be on that list of things you can’t leave in the car, along with: kids, dogs, ice cream and raw chicken. Wine like any perishable food is damaged by heat; over-heated wine will have little to no fruit characters and have cooked aromas something like burnt fruit or jam. Another keen thing to remember, liquid expands as it heats; imagine the mess Cabernet makes when it leaks all over the seat of your car. A few simple rules to follow: 1. Always use the air conditioner; 2. Never put the wine in the trunk, and 3. When traveling great distances or making stops Utilize a cooler or insulated bag with ice. Until next week, Cheers!

The Animal Crackers box was designed with a string handle for good reason. The animal shaped cookie treats were introduced in 1902 as a Christmas novelty and packaged so they could be hung from the Christmas tree. We’ve

heard of opening presents early, but eating ornaments must have been plenty of sneaky fun. A quick bolt of energy before heading out the door is actually easier (and more natural) than you may know. Apples have been proven to be more effective at keeping people awake in the morning than caffeine. Who knew? ‌an apple a day can keep an afternoon crash away.

DINE! SECTION The Burger Hits its “Prime” Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar

Adds a $6 Prime Burger to its Popular “5 for $6 ‘til 7” Menu America’s favorite food, the hamburger, is now available in its full-flavored splendor at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar. Recently introduced as part of the restaurant’s hugely successful “5 for 6 ‘til 7” bar menu, the Fleming’s Prime Burger isn’t just any hamburger. It starts with eight-ounces of ground Prime beef, a relative rarity in the world of burgers. It’s only natural that any burger Fleming’s serves its guests would be of the same high grade and quality as its Prime steaks. After hand-shaping the burger, the same preparation techniques for cooking a perfect steak are utilized: the burger is simply seasoned with kosher salt and coarse black pepper, seared on a flat top to lock in the juices and create a slight crust, then finished off in Fleming’s 1600° broiler. The sizzling burger is then topped with sharp Cheddar cheese and two slices of thick cut, brown sugar glazed bacon that give the beef a sweet and spicy kick. Crisp iceburg lettuce, a thick slice of tomato and chipotle mayo are served alongside so guests can build their burger. Of course, as with anything at Fleming’s, the burger can be customized to a guest’s exact liking, including temperature. The Prime Burger is then served open face on a custom baked, knotted challah bun and accented with two Fleming’s signature colossal onion rings. This summer is the perfect time to experience the Prime Burger, offered on Fleming’s “5 for $6 ‘til 7” menu for just $6 -- a remarkable value for a remarkable burger. Fleming’s introduced the “5 for 6 ‘til 7” menu in the bar earlier this summer. The menu offers 5 premium cocktails,5 award-winning wines by the glass, and 5 signature appetizers – now including the Prime Burger - all priced at $6 each, until 7 p.m. nightly. After 7 p.m. the Fleming’s Prime Burger will continue to be available in the bar for $12.00. 6333 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale - (480) 596-8265 905 N 54th St, Chandler - (480) 940-1900 20753 N Pima Rd # R, Scottsdale - (480) 538-8000 www.flemingssteakhouse.com

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE Well, we are just about halfway there; halfway through summer until the heat subsides and we can enjoy the 8 months of beautiful weather that we live here for. Until then, we have officially entered the dog days of summer. The dog days mean that you just buckle it down, get out of town or live with a frown. I say let’s buckle it down because there’s nothing a cold beer or margarita can’t get us through. This week to help you get out of a rut, we’ve included a myriad of entertainment options. For all that happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley, read on. Seriously, are you following us on Twitter yet? @ bdiggs and @MyFeMy ½ Price Lawn Seats: Live Nation had a cool ticket contest where they asked fans to vote on what kinds of changes to tickets they’d like to see. No service fee? Discounts? When it was all said and done more than 35,000 people voted and this winner was…buy one, get one free lawn tickets, which captured 72% of the votes. The promotion will give you a 50% discount off the total price and fees of tickets in multiples of two, and is available at participating shows at Live Nation amphitheatres only. So when’s the first time you can cash in on this great deal in Phoenix? Aerosmith with ZZ Top – July 27, Lil Wayne with Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy, Drake and Jeremih - August 12, Toby Keith with Trace Adkins – August 14, Def Leppard with Poison and Cheap Trick – August 29 and Brad Paisley with Dierks Bentley & Jimmy Wayne – October 1. That’s a lot of good concerts and all at half price. Jump on the deal now before those lawn seats sell out! For more info visit livenation.com. Best Dance Crew. The best part of this new talent search show? It features 20-year-old Phoenician Marissa Shipp. I think she is part of the big Shipp clan in Phoenix including Channel 3’s Brittney Shipp and ASU basketball player Jerren Shipp, but I’m not 100% on that. Anyways, the show will handpick the next “global superstar” and that star will receive the best training from music industry vets Laurieann Gibson (choreographer to megastars like the Jonas Brothers, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Diddy), Tamara Conniff (former executive-in-chief at Billboard Magazine), and Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins (Grammy-award winning songwriter/producer of superstars like Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Pussycat Dolls, Destiny’s Child, Mary J. Blige). So when you are watching be sure to cheer for hometown girl Marissa.

the work of 12 Chicano and Latino artists living and working in the PHX. The contemporary art work takes a look at issues of identity, tensions between high and low culture and a broad range of artistic styles. The exhibit is composed of paintings, sculptures, installations, prints, and photographs. Local artists featured include Claudio Dicochea, Fausto Fernandez, Luis Gutierrez, Annie Lopez, Melissa Martinez, Monica Aissa Martinez, Martin Moreno, Hector Ruiz, Roy Wasson Valle and DOSE, Lalo Cota and Mykil ZEPata. Have you been to the Phoenix Art Museum? If not, this is a perfect time as you can beat the heat and see what artists are portraying and seeing in our town. The exhibit runs through October 25th and costs $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $8 for full-time college students with ID, $4 for children ages 6-17. For more info visit phxart.org. Scottsdale Dining Things: Chef James Porter, one of our great local chefs formerly of Tapino Kitchen & Wine Bar, will open Petite Maison sometime this summer. It will be French-themed country bistro bringing good food at a lower price point. The menu will be small to match the size of the 80 seat restaurant and will focus on classic Gallic for lunch, dinner and brunch with highlights like beignets and chicory coffee. There have been a lot of recent closings at Southbridge so The Chef’s Loft is a welcome addition, even though it isn’t a restaurant. What is it? A state-of-the-art chef’s studio that will play host to a culinary school with classes headed by renowned chefs from across the country. Whether you’re a wannabe chef or just a fan of food, you’ll be able to take part in their programs and classes. The space will also include areas for private events in addition to public demonstrations for guests. It’s set to open in September 2009. For more info visit thechefsloft.com. Who’s Got a Kilt?: The sports world was abuzz with Tom Watson’s run at the British Open. A local golf course, Kierland Golf Club, has come up with a cool promotion, the Scottish Golf Experience to help you feel like you’re playing golf old school style. To honor Scottish immigrants who helped develop Arizona, you can rent kilts (or wear your own) and enjoy Johnnie Walker beverages while you’re hacking around the course. Bagpipes will signal the end of the day and the start of the Scottish Pipes at Sunset Series, where Bagpiper Michael McClanathan will play the tunes of Old World Scotland at the Dreamweaver Canyon fire pit. Ah, its something different and wearing the kilt will keep you a little cooler; just don’t go commando you dirty birds! For more info visit kierlandgolf.com. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

Check your swing. Take as many warm-up swings as needed to trigger your mind and ease your body into a good form, posture and rhythm for the day.

GEARING UP FOR A GREAT START Whether you warm-up with a bucket of range balls or not, follow these few simple steps to make sure your first shot is a good one. The Almighty, Rule #1….. No more rushing to your tee time! Be sure to get to the course with plenty of time to spare. Stretching, along with a few warm-up swings (if not a bucket or two of range balls) is all too crucial to ignore. No rush, no worry. Start off with a bang instead of waiting to find your groove somewhere along six or

seven. (or even the back nine.) Run through a check list before you hit the links. It won’t take you long at all – and will work wonders come that first all-important tee shot. Count your clubs (You’re allowed 14 clubs in your bag. Although your friends may not hold you to this, it’s nice to know you didn’t leave your beloved 7 iron on the back porch at home.) Prepare your mental strategy. Get to the first tee with time to spare. Close your eyes and devise a game plan for the day.

Gear Up. Check all the pockets in your bag for the proper essentials. A few necessities include a glove, plenty of tees, a pencil, ball markers (or coins)

…and of course, a scorecard. (If you’re keeping score) Here in Arizona, it’s nice to have sunscreen and lip balm on hand just in case. Golf is a game of preparation and strategy. Not just the days or weeks leading up to a round of play, but the day itself as well. Slow things down and approach each round of golf with a cool, calm collectiveness. You’ll soon discover just how thankful your scorecard will be.

Draft Your Fantasy Teams Here!

THE LIBRARY BAR & GRILL

(5th and Mill in Downtown Tempe)

Interviews

Football is a team game, but preparing for the draft is a solo journey. On the field, it’s easy to feed off your teammates drive and energy. The draft however is you and you alone. Your friends on the field won’t be there to fire you up and push you through the battle. It’s crucial for players to dig deep and find the drive within. On these days….There’s No “I” in Team but there is in “Win.”

It’s best to be honest and just be you. Life in the league is much easier this way, especially if a potential team-to-be knows exactly what they’re getting. Many players think it’s smartest to say what a coach or scout wants to hear. Honesty during the interview process is indeed a much better policy. Relax and stay loose, but be plenty ready. Teams ask players every question under the sun. It’s an athlete’s version of a “presidential debate” and a pretty good time to be plenty prepared. “What’s your life like at home? Do you have any girlfriends? What do you do for fun? Why did you decide to leave college early? Where were you on the night of….?” In other words, a standard episode of CSI. Players are better off telling the truth…. the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Planet Combine

Your Inner Circle

If ESPN covers it, you better know it, live it and love it. The NFL Combine and Draft is a three ring circus, a media frenzy with over 40 million viewers watching around the world. A player’s every move is watched like a hawk. Previous play along with game tape obviously speaks for itself. However, preparing your mind and body for the combine is an entirely different monster. Strength, power, agility, coordination, stamina and speed are all under a microscope. Your 40 times are under extreme surveillance. All the numbers recorded from an obstacle course of numerous difficult drills (vertical leap, bench press, broad jump, cone drills, shuttle, etc.) can in many cases make or break your draft status. In short, the days leading up to the big event requires a well-prepared body and a clear frame of mind. It’s quite a good time to wake up on

A good agent is key. It’s extremely important to have a good solid Jerry Maguire type on your side. A fair and honest, smart-minded, business-savvy agent can play a key role in the success of one’s career. Those around you will play into the picture as well, more often than you know. If a player has the talent and potential for a long and illustrious career, he better have a posse of good people in his pack. One bad apple can spoil the bunch, so only bring aboard true friends and family, you’ll be plenty thankful you did. Be prepared early for the circus act ahead. Agents are everywhere, knocking down doors and making girl scouts look lazy.

Solo Act

THE NFL DRAFT

QUICK FACTS

Graduating college is a major accomplishment. A time to celebrate, reflect and look to the future. For a few of College Football’s finest, it’s a time to be prepped, prepared and on top of your game. Although extremely challenging, life in the National Football League is a good one indeed. It does however require tremendous mental and physical preparation, both on the field – and in one’s psyche. The NFL’s second-most anticipated event after the Super Bowl, it’s one with plenty of twists and turns. “Future Hall of Famers” can turn out to be duds and late round picks end up in the Hall of Fame. These days, the increasing number of people writing, reporting and blogging about the draft is mind-boggling, nothing short of amazing.

the right side of the bed and head for a bowl of Wheaties.

For players, it’s an experience like no other, an ideal time to have their “A” game armed and ready.

All The NFL Games!

You might think a yo-yo is just a fun toy. But it started out as a weapon in the Philippine Islands in the 16th century. It weighed four pounds and had a 20 foot cord. It was introduced to the United States as a toy in 1929. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

You’ve probably heard your coach or parents say, “It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye.” Well that phrase comes from Ancient Rome. The only rule during Roman wrestling matches was, “No eye gouging.” Biting, kicking and scratching were allowed but the only way to be disqualified was to poke someone’s eye out.

Choose Wisely The agency and financial advisors a player chooses can play a crucial role in the big picture. How close are they from home? What’s their track record like? Do you have any feedback from existing clients and/or friends and future teammates? It can be a bit overwhelming, but a strong business backing you through the journey is an essential element and vital piece of the puzzle. While your focus is football, it’s good to know their focus is you. Cornfields aside… If you find them, they will come. A Need for Perspective There will be plenty of hoopla and buzz in the air. It’s very easy to get “caught-up” in what can feel like the Rise of a King and Heir to Your Throne. Those around you can be a media madhouse themselves. When will you get drafted? What round? Who’s in the way? What city are we heading to? How much playing time will you get and who will be on your team? The process can be very surreal, but the key focus should be on truly enjoying the experience and taking it all in. Afterall, you’re about to get paid (well) to do what you love… playing football in the NFL. Have a blast, but stay low key and down to earth. Instead of letting it all go to your head… let it all go every Sunday on the field.

Cue & A Is it OK to leave my pool cue in the car? Absolutely NOT! Never leave your cue in the car, not even for 20 minutes. Arizona’s dry heat will ruin your cue. It’s like putting your cue in the oven and setting it for 100 to 140 degrees. The dry heat removes moisture from the wood causing shrinkage. This results in the inlays appearing to be swollen. If the inlays are wood, they can shrink. Heat also causes swelling of metal rings and joints that push through the finish and the finish can shrink depending on the percentage of moisture used in the lacquer. All of these things can result in the shaft and/or butt of your cue warping.

Bonus:

If you protect your investment, it will last a lifetime. Robert Mallen G Cue Billiard Store

If you do forget and leave your cue in the car, bring it indoors, LEAVE IT IN THE CASE, and allow it to cool down naturally over time. The reason cues usually warp is not the heat directly, but a rapid change in temperature. It is like placing a hot glass right from

Remember that wood absorbs and releases moisture, is elastic, and has a memory. This is one reason you can swell dents out of your cue. Depending on the elements your cue is exposed to, it can shift shape over time. Try to keep the environment as consistent as possible and this will preserve the quality of your cue over time.

The Importance of Glutamine and Why We All Need It Glutamine is an amino acid. Amino acids are the building blocks to protein. Glutamine is not just any amino acid, it is the most abundant amino acid in our body - and highly concentrated in our muscles. It has recently been re-classified as a conditionally essential amino acid. This means that while the body can make glutamine, there are often times when the body’s need for glutamine is greater than its ability to produce it. Glutamine is important for protein metabolism and increasing the volume of cells. It also promotes secretion of human growth hormone which plays a major role in metabolizing body fat while supporting new muscle growth. The anti-catabolism effect of glutamine prevents breakdown of the muscles. It’s important to know that muscle is NOT created during a workout. It’s the recovery process that allows muscles to rebuild. The need for glutamine is three times of what the body will produce on its own. As an additional supplement, glutamine powder will enhance the repair of damaged muscle proteins which occurs after exercise. With its role in muscle loss prevention, glutamine stimulates the synthesis of muscle protein and protects skeletal muscle

mass. Supplementing the body with glutamine powder will most definitely enhance performance of the muscles while stimulating essential energy promotion. It decreases the aches and pains of a hard workout during the recovery process while also enhancing your immune system and regulating high levels of stress. Your next trip to the health food store should be a rewarding one indeed. Be sure to implement this crucial supplement into your dietary regimen. Your body quickly will thank you for the kind gesture. As always, if you are on any medications or have a medical condition, you should always consult with your Doctor before taking any dietary supplement. The following people should NOT take glutamine: - People with kidney problems - People with cirrhosis of the liver - People with Reye’s syndrome - Pregnant women - Women who are breast feeding

Cankle Lipo: If you’ve ever seen thick ankles that look like a continuation of calves, you know what a “cankle” is. Some women are genetically predisposed to have more leg and ankle fat, and fatty deposits in the ankles are among the most resistant to diet and exercise. Doctors can now use liposuction to sculpt a more shapely transition from calf to foot.

Toe Facelift: Patients are having toe fat removed in their big toe or adding fat to the balls of their feet to help them endure a busy lifestyle. Also popular is a procedure involving surgical shortening of the second toe, preventing long second toes from dominating the others, hanging over the edge of an open-toe pump. future distractions. Helping children in the family with basic discipline may teach them to be more focused. Distractions they need to be concerned with are extremes in watching television, playing video games, or constant use of the cell phone. These are great distractions which will limit their ability to learn and develop into productive adults. This is when family plays a very important role in limiting their children’s distractions and interruptions. It’s never too early to start managing your time and their time. Being part of a family is a lifetime learning process. We all can learn from the mistakes we make – this includes the children in the family with no exceptions. In fact, you learn your basic life skills when you are a child. If we believe we made mistakes, or believed we didn’t, when we are young, we will become very self centered and jaded adults. If we are adults and believe we are always correct, the interruptions we receive along the way of our lives will remind us that we too are human and need to sometimes allow those interruptions into our lives to keep our focus for

Naked Dave’s Local Distortion

Naked Dave’s gear pick of the week: My gear pick of the week is the Greg Bennett Avion 7 guitar. With a mahogany body and rosewood fretboard, Grover tuners, 22 fret/24” scale, and a 12” radius mahogany neck, this guitar rivals the Les Paul. With deep tunes, and easy playability, you can’t go wrong with this guitar. Sold new for about $599.99 and with the economy where it is, this is a smart buy.

The Naked Truth:

On July 24th Loren Battle hit the stage at the Clubhouse with an intense enthusiasm, and passion that is rarely seen anymore in the Known more by his nickname “Head”, and his days with Korn, Brian “Head” Welch headlined the show at the Clubhouse on Friday July 24th. His new solo project, simply titled “HEAD”, is proof positive that Mr. Welch is no “Gumby”. As Head brought his new project to the stage, opening with “Re-Bel” he seized our attention. And with other hits like, “Die Religion Die”, and “Save Me From Myself”, Head proves that he still knows how to rock hard. The only difference is how he does it with a new found passion and conviction in his spiritual beliefs.

local scene. The opening band for Brain “Head” Welch of Korn, they absolutely brought their “A” game; and earned that right. With their Killswitch and Gauge meets Sevendust style of metal and Joey’s thunderous vocal’s, they captivated everyone. Loren Battle toured on the Van’s Warp Tour in 2008, and it definitely shows, because these young men preformed like seasoned veterans. Not even “Strap Malfunctions”, could stop them from completely rockin the house. With Joey at the helm, Logan and Jason on guitars, Eric on bass, and Ryan on drums, Loren Battle is a force to be reckoned with.

36

For those of you who think Brain “Head” Welch has gone soft, I have one word to say to you. “WRONG!” July 30th -August 5th, 2009

Creepsville 666, the only band of the night at The Breakroom, needs no other supporting acts to bring you one hell of a ghoulish night. An Alice Cooper meets Buddy Holly style Glamabilly band, Creepsville pommels you with songs about zombies, werewolves, the undead, and psycho girlfriends. This is an outstanding band, that hold’s nothing back. They will scare the hell out of you with they Night of the Living Dead style of lyrics, and at the same time entice you with their mesmerizing beats. As Geno Dellamorte (singer/Guitar player) will tell you, “Our music is raw and in your face, it’s not for the squeamish”. With Dez K. Daver playing upright bass, and new comer to the band Sean “Needles” McKee, and Robbie Six on drums. This band is on the fast track to success.

Dodge Dakota

Picture and Review by Chad Haire The Dodge Dakota is a truck that makes sense. It’s big enough on the inside for fullsize adults, yet small enough on the outside to fit into a parking space or narrow desert trails. It is also available with a potent 300 horsepower V-8. Too bad the Dodge boys didn’t have this motor available to me at the time. They sent me the base V-6 engine instead. It was a bit strained pulling the optional 4-wheel drive system, but got 15-19 mpg overall.

Previous Dakota models I have driven had a stiff riding suspension, but this newer version was very smooth. The cornering, steering, and braking was better too. The interior is rather plain, but simple. The base truck starts at about $20 grand. A fully-loaded double cab with a big V-8 and all the goodies can hit $34 large. But keep in mind, Dodge dealers are discounting at the moment, so good deals can be had.
