“Charlyne Yi does not believe in love. Or so she says.” This according to the press notes for her new film. She’s a selfproclaimed “modern-day” skeptic on love. Her skepticism was the basis for an idea Yi and friend/director Nick Jasenovec had when developing Paper Heart, a twist on your typical Hollywood love story, combing documentary-style elements, storytelling and truly unique fantasy sequences featuring puppets. Twenty-three year old Southern California-born, Yi grabs a microphone and hits the streets to interview a variety of people on the topic of true love while Phoenix native and Arcadia High School graduate Jasenovec takes hold of the camera and captures the moments on tape. The duo with crew in hand set out on a four-week cross country road trip to learn more on the subject and possibly turn Yi into a romantic herself. Along the way, Yi meets actor Michael Cera and a romance buds. “I went to Nick and thought it would be cool to make a documentary about love,” says Yi. “Most movies have some sort of love, relationship… why not make a movie about that.” “Charlyne just wanted to make a traditional documentary. She’s a performer; she performs around Los Angeles regularly. She’s a personality, so it made sense for her to be on camera,” adds Jasenovec. While nervous as first, Yi found is easy to interview subjects for

the film. “It was scary. It was terrifying. I had done man on the street before, where I didn’t speak at all, and people got upset with me. I was worried when we went to Las Vegas that someone would want to beat me up. You don’t know what is going to happen. But, it ended up that some of the subjects I interviewed on the street were more comfortable on camera than me. I met a lot of interesting people who opened up to me, strangely. I was like wow, these stories are awesome.”

What made it easy for the subjects to open up? Jasenovec believes it was Charlyne’s innocence. “She was as nervous as the subjects were, which helped put them at ease.”

Yi adds, “Sometimes it takes a month, sometimes it takes a year for someone to realize they are in love. I think personally that there’s no true way of figuring it out, or timeline. I have met people who had love at first sight, although I might not believe in love at first sight, it worked for them and they are still together to this day. Or, you might be in love at one time and fall out of love. It doesn’t mean that love wasn’t true.”

While Yi at times calls herself a skeptic on love, she is quick to point out that, “Skeptic is taking it negative sometimes. It’s more just taking it smart and not jumping to conclusions and blindly saying ‘this must be love.’ You cannot think that ‘he said two funny things and he looks nice.’ That’s not love. Love is so much more than that. You’ve got to get to know the

marketplace… a French cookbook printed in English. The process took years, but as well all know, her career turned out to be quite successful after her first cookbook was published in 1961. The second half of the story beings in 2002 and follows Julie Powell (Amy Adams), a late-twenties New York City resident who is bored with her job at the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. She spends her days dealing with grieving and irate citizens coping with the aftermath of 9/11. Bored with her dead end job, and aspiring to be a writer, she takes the advice of hr husband and begins a blog. A fan of cooking, she decides the tackle the enormous Julia Child Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume I cookbook and documents her daily experiences. She proposes to cook all 524 recipes within 365 days in her tiny apartment kitchen. As her obsession with the project grows, so does the fan support. When the media grabs hold of the story, Powell becomes a national phenomenon. The movie itself switches back and forth between stories lines and time periods, each part of the story is just as charming and entertaining as the other. Streep gives an awardworthy performance which a fellow colleague of mine said captured the

real Julia “to a T,” having worked with her years ago at a PBS station. Adams is one of the most likeable faces in Hollywood today, and she certainly does not disappoint in the film. Julie & Julia is the sleeper hit of the summer, and as it may unfortunately not be viewed by the largest audience nor see the biggest box office receipts during the blockbuster season, it proves to be one of the best and most enjoyable films we have seen in months.

Make It an Evening of Food By Randy Montgomery After heading out to see Julie & Julia in theatres, may I suggest the following light-hearted food themed films to round out your evening upon returning home: No Reservations (2007) Based on the 2001 German film, Mostly Martha, Catherine Zeta-Jones plays a chef who falls for her sous-chef (Aaron Eckhart). Julie & Julia Cook Up Fun on Screen By Randy Montgomery I smell something cooking and it’s not beef bourguignon. It may be an Oscar nomination for Meryl Steep in director Nora Ephron’s new comedy Julie & Julia, which is based on a book of the same name and the life of world-famous chef, author and television host Julia Child.

Julie and Julia is actually two separate true stories in one. The first story line follows Child as she and her husband move to France August 6th - August 12th, 2009

from the United States in the late 1940’s. Bored, Child takes up several hobbies such as hat making and bridge. When neither of these new talents satisfy her interest, she decides to enroll in a cooking class at the Le Cordon Bleu culinary school. Child, who always said that, “I feel that I am French,” and proclaimed that she was a “renegade foodie by night,” found great pleasure in cooking the advanced dishes presented to her by the instructors, and also realized that she quite a bit of talent in the culinary realm. “Soul Power”, a trip down memory lane… Review by Stan Robinson The year of 1974 became a memorable year for two main reasons. It was the year of the famous “Rumble in the jungle” boxing match in Kinshasa, Zaire between Muhammad Ali, who faced the heavyweight champion George Foreman. That event was presented in the 1996 documentary “When We Were Kings”. The second event was the 12-hour, three nightlong concert in Zaire during the same time frame as the boxing match. The two events were intertwined because of the assistance of boxing promoter Don King.

BABALOO’S CUBAN CAFÉ IS THE BOMB! In Southwest Phoenix - By Nicholas Connell In the foothills of Phoenix near 12th street and East Chandler Boulevard sits a very special and exquisite Cuban Café, Babaloo’s. For those who have had the pleasure of tasting this unique dining experience over the last year – my words will pale in comparison to the pleasure our pallets have enjoyed. Simply put in modern slang, “this place is the bomb!” Mayra, George, Chef Robert and Lisa Gonzales, have put their inspiration into this scratch kitchen for everyone to come and celebrate the traditional recipes of Cuban soul with the modern interpretation of rustic family recipes. Can you say pure enjoyment! This evening we were treated to fifty years of family cooking, smiles, laughter, and a celebration fit for a King! Right from a little town in Cuba named Esperanza, full of the smells of garlic, onions and cilantro. Of course there was some beautiful pairings of wine too- courtesy of Southern Wine and Spirits-that complimented Babaloo’s “antiguo y moderno”, Spanish for ‘antique and modern’ as Mama Gonzales would call it. The Croquetas de Famon opened the nights festivities paired with a Broquel Chardonnay. This countryside favorite of sweet ham minced and blended with béchamel sauce and served with a Sofrito Mornay sauce was a delight!

This was followed by an Amuse Bouche, paired with a Graffigna Pinot Grigio. As a Pineapple Ceviche in a Tostone Cup, this resurrected Latin American version was incredible! Our next course of Camarones en Salsa Verde was paired with a Monticello Crianza. These shrimp, sautéed in a traditional Basque sauce with Salsa Verde of parsley, onions and lemon juice, then served over white rice with roasted tomato and tropical pesto was a 10! And just as the ahh’s were subsiding, Chef Robert and family brought one more Cuban classic to life with Ropa Vieja, paired with a Campo Viejo Gran Reserva. This Flank steak slow cooked with tomato sauce, red wine, bell peppers, garlic and onions, then shredded and served with black beans and rice, was maybe the best of show all night! Until, the Tres Leches appeared from heaven for desert! This Latin pastry tradition, a white cake infused with a blend of sweet creams, paired incredibly with a Pyrat Cask Barrel aged Rum, was worth a pirates ransom and more! We all would have stayed for seconds, but there were fresh cigars to be rolled by Willie Guillermo of Willy Cigars, and more hot Latin music from Guitarras Latinas playing as a warm breeze brushed our cheeks while the sun slowly set in the southwest.

This fact surprises the uninitiated who last tasted something called tequila (outside a margarita) in college. On Memorial Day, we celebrated the first weekend of summer with a nice blanco from the lowlands. It was as fresh as the weather, and we could taste the earth the agave was grown in. The night before, we had a super-premium that would stand up to any single malt in both complexity and richness. Completely different experiences and both very compelling. Good tequila does not cause hangovers. Plain and simple. If you are hungover the next morning, something else caused it. Tequila seems to have a mildly hallucinogenic edge. Maybe it’s just us, but the world looks a little cockeyed after a tequila or two. Tequila is not a depressant. Seldom is the time that tequila has left any of us nodding off over our plate or head lolling back on the couch, as can happen all too

Quality tequila can be paired with most foods... ...but it should not be mixed with any other liquid, with the exception of water. Preferably frozen. An excellent bottle of tequila is a fantastic gift. First, because it’s likely that the recipient of the gift doesn’t have much, if any, excellent tequila. Second, tequila manufacturers go to great lengths to make artwork of their bottles and often put those bottles in interesting boxes. Leyenda, from Gran Centenario, comes in a nifty burlap coffin. And each year, the Cuervo family commissions a renowned artist to decorate the boxes in which it places its dark-brown bottles of Reserva de la Familia.

I know you Tweet too, so follow us @bdiggs and @myFEmy. What’s not going at Myst?: I associate Myst with loud electronic music, nonstop go-go dancers, busy bars, and sweaty, packed dance floors, but when I arrived Friday night I found more doormen than people. It was like a walking through a ghost bar, even the people working looked muted. The only up side was that I was able to get a very quick, very neat drink. As I sipped my cocktail I tried to figure out what had happened to this Scottsdale institution? Maybe it was because in the past few months its had begun to allow the 18 to 20 years old crowd in on Friday nights causing the 21 years old and up crowd to get sick of being sectioned off and herded into “drinking” areas. Maybe Myst again, turned off their faithful clientele by introducing another change of switching back to 21 years and older on Friday nights. Perhaps Myst was barren because it now promotes Friday night events through 101.5 Jamz, a hip-hop radio station, even though Myst is a notoriously well known for its mostly electronic music. Or maybe it was simply an off Friday. I hope for the sake of Myst the people in charge figure out what’s ailing the empty club soon because if there are any more nights like last Friday they will alienate even their most loyal club goers. recently held an open audition, looking for new talent. Many comedians at NCT came in with no prior experience, so NCT opens auditions to anyone with the guts to get onstage. CrackerJax Announces New Bungy Dome Jump for Charity CrackerJax is hosting a grand opening for their newest attraction, The Bungy Dome, on August 9, 2009 from 10am to 10pm. Kids and adults alike are invited to donate school supplies that will benefit “Save the Family”, an Arizona based non-profit that aids families in crisis. THE MADDEN CURSE (An Eerie Football Jinx Too Real to Ignore) Superstitions are pretty prevalent in almost every sport. Whether it’s the North Carolina shorts that Michael Jordan wore under his Bulls shorts for every game�, Patrick Roy talking to the goal posts, to Roger Clemens who always touched the head of the Babe Ruth statue before playing at Yankee stadium, sports athletes of all kinds follow these quirky behaviors because they believe in luck. The same goes for curses, something that no sports player really likes to talk about. The most famous curse is that of the Billy Goat, which seems to have decimating the Cubs, as they haven’t been to a World Series in 63 years. The curse on topic though deals with football. Specifically, the all too ironic “Madden Curse”, one of the more feared curses to this day. Starting in the year 2000, a player from the NFL was selected to appear on the yearly installment of EA’s Madden football game, one of the most popular and successful video games of all time. Once becoming the game’s cover athlete however, a laundry list of bad things have happened to these players afterwards. Several NFL players, who play the game religiously, prefer not to appear on the cover because they fear the worst. In last February’s Super Bowl, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu were the brightest stars on a

glittering stage. On April 24, EA Sports announced the longhaired pair would share the cover of Madden NFL 2010, the newest edition of one of the world’s most successful videogame franchises. It’s an honor that’s historically been given to the top players of the previous NFL season — and one that may cause Arizona and Pittsburgh fans nightmarish visions of sprained ankles, torn ACLs and wasted seasons. That’s because many believe gracing a Madden NFL box is the surest path to the inactive list. Since announcer John Madden first ceded the cover of his eponymous game for the 1999 edition, one of the NFL’s quirkiest subplots has been the “Madden Curse,” which appears to leave the game’s cover boys injured or ineffective the following season. “The jinx thing bites us every year,” Chris Erb, a marketing director for the juggernaut video game, said in 2007. “I haven’t told this to people, but I’ve got a bottle of champagne in my office that we’re ready to pop once someone breaks the curse.” Some people think this is nonsense, others a coincidence. How about we let the facts speak for themselves? In 2000, Hall of Famer and the great Lions running back Barry Sanders, who was a lock to break the all-time rushing

No one on earth seems very satisfied by the non-reasons he gives. Madden Curse 1 Naysayers 0 In 2001, running back Eddie George was on the cover of the game. He had one of the worst statistical seasons of his career, failed to break 1000 yards rushing for the first time in his career, and the Titans finished 7-9 and failed to make the playoffs. Worst of all, George couldn’t handle a pass at the end of the season, which resulted in a Ray Lewis touchdown and effectively ended their season. And to think, they were in the Superbowl the year before. George retired 3 years later at an early age from the wear and tear on his body. Madden Curse 2 Naysayers 0 In 2002, quarterback Daunte Culpepper was on the cover of the game. He suffered severe setbacks in his output, throwing for far more interceptions and less touchdowns. Culpepper never looked like the same player as he did the previous season

Again, as this trend continues, Faulk had one of the worst statistical seasons of his career, and a nagging ankle injury haunting him all season. He was never the same player as the one on “the greatest show on turf” of years past. He never seemed to be able to get healthy after this year and never cracked the 1000 yard mark. Injuries forced him into retirement. Madden Curse 4 Naysayers 0 In 2004, Michael Vick appeared on the cover of the game. Unfortunately, Vick broke his leg during a pre-season game before the season even started and missed most of the season. The previous year he had his best statistical season of his career. Vick never again touched those numbers, and was found guilty on organizing a dog-

He also was found not guilty on federal drug charges. Besides some minor set backs, Lewis had a pretty good season.

Madden Curse 5 Naysayers 1 In 2006, quarterback Donovan McNabb appeared on the cover of Madden. Prior to that season, McNabb had a career year and the Eagles made it to the Superbowl. The curse hit him in early in the season where he suffered a hernia. He tried to fight through the pain for most of the season and played terribly, throwing a large number of interceptions. His season was cut short when he was knocked out of the game against the Dallas Cowboys and then decide to have surgery to repair the hernia ending his season. The Eagles finished 5-11, their worst record in half a decade.

Madden Curse 8 Naysayers 2 Brett Favre appeared on the cover of Madden 2009, becoming the first retired NFL player to do so. Several months later, he announced his desire to play again. Packers management made this a complete mess as training camp started, failing to grant Brett Farve’s wish to be re-activated. The Packers have decided to focus on the youngster Aaron Rogers, as Ted Thompson does not seem to care about putting his best players on the field right now. This created a media circus, and now looks as though Brett Favre will be lucky for a chance to play for a different team.

Madden Curse 6 Naysayers 1 In 2007, running back Shaun Alexander appeared on the cover. Much like the trend before this, prior to this season, Alexander had MVP numbers and set an NFL record with 27 touchdowns. Alexader broke his foot early on in the season causing him to miss almost half the season, and his own touchdown record was broken by LaDainian Tomlinson. Alexander

There you have it. So far the Curse has affected 8 out of 10 players pretty drastically, you really can’t argue with the numbers. Will our beloved Arizona Cardinals be affected by the talented Fitzgerald gracing this year’s cover? Only time will tell. Either way, Madden Football is a proven, top-notch video game to be loved for generations. The curse if anything, adds a touch of controversy that ultimately takes the charm of the game to an even higher level. They say “any publicity is good publicity”, as long as your team is unaffected, of course.

Multi-Platinum Band Hits The Road In Support Of New Album, 21St Century Breakdown, To Be Released Worldwide On Friday, May 15Th, 2009 Reprise Records’ Grammy® Award winning rock band Green Day has announced they will hit the road for their first proper tour of the United States and Canada in more than three years beginning July 3rd in Seattle, WA. The first leg of the tour will cross North America through the summer and will make a stop in Phoenix at US Airways Center on Saturday, August 22. The show will begin at 8:00pm. Tickets go on sale Friday, May 8 at 10am. The band has come a long way from its stage-diving roots to sell millions of records by melding punk with pop. The rock opera “American Idiot” and hits such as “Wake Me Up When September Ends” made the band rock royalty, along with Coldplay and U2. The trio, inspired by artists such as Queen and Bruce Springsteen, deliver swelling flourishes, harmonies, anthemic choruses and enormous riffs. Although Green Day long ago traded open-throttle minimalism for radio-friendly songs, it still has the anger that sparked a generation to slam-dance to the likes of Fear and Black Flag.

Green Day decided to take the plunge and move to a major label, signing to Warner Brothers subsidiary Reprise Records, despite bigger offers from elsewhere. A&R man Rob Cavallo

was also recruited as producer for their third album. Released in 1994, Dookie gradually stalked the charts going on to sell over nine million copies in the USA. The album tracks “Long View”, “Basket Case”, “Welcome To Paradise”, “When I Come Around” and “She”, in addition to the soundtrack cut “J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva)”, received extensive airplay on rock radio and MTV. The band’s arduous touring schedule was the chief reason for their rise, and was topped off by appearances on the 1994 Lollapalooza package and the revived Woodstock event. Green Day is touring in support of their long-awaited eighth studio album 21st Century Breakdown, which will be released globally by Reprise Records on Friday, May 15th, 2009. Century Breakdown since early 2006 with producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins). The first single, “Know Your Enemy” was released to radio and digital retailers on April 16th. Green Day recently performed 21st Century Breakdown in its entirety during a series of warm-up club shows for hometown fans in the Bay Area. In its review of a show at Oakland’s Fox Theater, Rolling Stone commented that the band, augmented by guitarists Jason White and Jeff Matika, and keyboardist Jason Freese, had the “Quadrophenialike hang of 21st Century Breakdown’s classic rock melodies and lifetimepunk drive down solid” and that the album is “rock opera in which the rock always comes first.” “21st Century Breakdown is Green Day’s best album,” the reviewer concluded, “and at the Fox, they proved that the rock opera can be as punk as a Clash 45.”

21st Century Breakdown is Green Day’s first studio album since 2004’s two-time Grammy Award-winning punk-rock opera American Idiot, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles and went on to sell more than 12 million copies worldwide. Naked Dave’s Local Distortion The Naked Truth: WOW! What a head bangin weekend. If you were not at Club Red on Friday the 31st, you missed the Rock and Roll social event of the summer! Naked Dave’s Music hosted the night of Arizona’s rock family. With a red carpet list consisting of Dan Wexler and John Aquilino of Icon, Pete Loren of Trixter, Steve Conley of F5, the gents of Metal Elvis, Jack of Mudd Guitars, Tom of B.C. Rich, Creepsville 666, Prophet and Lucius of St. Madness, Bernie and John of Dagger, it just goes to show you that the valley’s musical family is ALIVE, and thriving.

The night was full of guitar screaming solos, leather pants, and bra busting music, from both local/national acts. The night started with Chasing Claymores, a band out of San Diego, California. With their Good Charlotte (but better) meets Theory of a Deadman style of music, these young men sure make it hard to be the band after them. With Joey Shelly (Lead Vocals), Charlie Santilena (bass), Ian Hoey (drums), and Robbie Blatt (guitar/ vocals), this band shows us a level of energy and charisma. Look out Billboard here they come! Tucson’s own Love Mound. A trio that is Jimi Hendrix meets ZZ Top (with as dash of COC), these boys south of the valley brought it loud and hard. As Mikey (singer/guitar player) will tell you, “That’s how we roll, loud and hard, DEAL WITH IT! With songs like El Remolino, Burn the Sun, and Across the Plains, all I can say is, move over ZZ Top, there’s a new gunslinger in town! At the Red Owl, Miles to Nowhere played their own style of Punk/Indie tunes. Another trio, this Green Day meets Josie and the Pussycats group, draws you in with hooky tunes, and the cute, and bouncy, Kristen Taylor (vocals, and guitars) on the mic. With Stephen (bass), and new comer to the band Russ “Thunder” Ives on drums, completing this band, you do not want to miss them. Kristen is endorsed by Greg Bennett guitars, and Red Bull, and she also hosts an open mic on Sunday nights at The Big Fish Pub in Tempe.

Up next was The Relics, from the north side of the valley. These Iggy Pop meets The Ramones with some Red Hot Chili Peppers mixed in gents; prove you can rock it at any age. Keeping the Punk scene alive and well in the valley, with Vic (vocals and guitar), D Tease (bass guitar and vocals), Dan (lead guitar and vocals), and Terry Silveus on drums, they truly have musical genius flowing in their veins.

Headlining at Club Red that night was Big Cock. And all I can say is if you were not there, YOU MISSED OUT big time! BC has not played in the valley in over a year, and they brought people out of the woodwork.

Robert Mason (lead vocals) was spot on, and Dave Henzerling’s guitar slinging, showed us how guitar playing should be done. John Covington pulverized us on drums, and Mr. Colby (bass) held up the bottom end like a rock! They earned the right to be called “The Hardest Working Band” in Rock and Roll. Last, (but surely not least) was Bash. Boys out of El Paso, Texas, these 16-17 year old teens gave the big boys a run for their money. These young men are very talented; and give them a year and they could be all over the radio. Also playing Joe’s Grotto on Saturday August 1st, the crowd could not believe these guys were just teenagers. Members include Sebastian Felix (Vocals, lead guitar, composition), Chris Frias (Rhythm guitar), Adrian Rodriguez (drums), and Michael Russo (bass). Just a note to the young lady’s out there, they look as good as they sound so don’t miss them next time they are in town! Over all Naked Dave’s Music Charity night was a great success. We would

Closing the night at the Red Owl was Dirty Dan and the Distributors. Ruby Cheeks of KDKB once called them Johnny Cash meets X, style of Rockabilly. Another favorite of the night, they are definitely “bad to the bone”. With songs like Gone Fistin, Hot Rod Baby, and Payson, Dirty Dan and his boys took us on a musical ride that we DID NOT want to end. CHEAP TRICK – THE LATEST (CT UNLIMITED) For those only familiar with Cheap Trick from their handful of radio hits, listen up… it’s time to learn more about what is arguably rock’s most underrated band. Their sense of humor is evident as the title could easily be interpreted as ‘The L.A. Test’ showing the band at Venice Beach, CA combing the beach with metal detectors while guitarist Rick Nielsen is buried up to his elbows in sand. (Somewhat odd for a band from Rockford, Illinois.) In the midst of their 35th year together and their 15th studio album, it’s only natural to assume that this (or any band for that matter) is running out of gas. While the band certainly hasn’t knocked it out of the park with every release of their career, if there’s any justice this release will find the band receiving the praise and attention that has eluded them with subsequent releases. This is easily their Sgt. Pepper - and not simply because there is a Beatles-esque feel to alot of the record. The vibe and flow throughout, well crafted songwriting and at times the sound makes you realize this is a masterpiece waiting to be discovered.

“When The Lights Are Out” may be a Slade cover, although you’d never know it here as Cheap Trick puts their stamp all over it. “Miss Tomorrow” is utter pop brilliance while “Sick Man Of Europe” (also August 6th - August 12th, 2009

the name of the band Nielsen and bassist Tom Petersson played together in before Cheap Trick) is easily the album’s heaviest track and arguably the sickest bass lines the 12 string bassist has ever put on tape. “Every day You Make Me Crazy”, “California Girl” and “Alive” are upbeat, tight rockers while “Everybody Knows” and “Closer, The Ballad Of Burt And Linda” are so close to The Beatles that Yoko Ono and Michael Jackson’s estate are probably on the phone at this moment trying to collect royalties. The songs are interwoven into a pattern of sheer pop ecstasy from one to the next. A number of tracks are slower and at first listen may take repeated listening to absorb the brilliance within. Rich sounds and fabulous production that continuously reminds one of The Beatles is admittedly the band’s biggest overall influence. So much so that the band will be performing the fab four’s Sgt. Pepper album in its entirety for a 10 day Vegas run this September. So they proudly wear it on their sleeve. At over a dozen spins as of this writing, it gets better each and every time. Nissan Maxima

Picture and Review by Chad Haire The previous Maxima had a reputation as being a great sport sedan, so I wanted to get the new updated model for comparison. This is now a front-wheel drive sedan. The advantage is more interior and trunk room. The disadvantage is that most of the weight is moved to the front, which results in a slight loss of handling when taking fast corners. Fortunately, the factory engineers did a good job of balancing the chassis, so the Maxima still handles well. The ride quality is very smooth. There is a sport suspension option, but I think the standard set-up is more practical. The only engine is the proven 3.5 liter as found in the 370-Z sports car. It’s hooked to a belt-driven CVT

transmission. As a rule, I don’t like these gearboxes, finding them noisy with slow shifting. But again, the engineers did a great job on this one. It’s quiet, responds to commands and has a manual-shift override divided into six-gear ratios. I clocked a 0-60 mph time of 6.1 seconds in manual mode and 5.8 seconds in the automatic “drive” setting. Fast enough for me. While the Maxima has been slightly “detuned” when compared to the previous versions, it’s still a nice sporty sedan. The base Maxima starts at about $26,000. Mine was a loaded SV that came with about everything, so it hit $33,900.
