The Magic of 4 Avenue th

4th Avenue, a magic street of dreams, has undergone numerous evolutions throughout the years beginning with the building of the railroads. The 4th Avenue Business District stretches from University Boulevard on the north end to 9th Street on the south end and serves as a major link between the University of Arizona and downtown Tucson. The Avenue evolved to provide the goods and services for the surrounding residential neighborhoods along with bars and restaurants. In the late 1940s the area gradually changed into a light industrial and commercial district followed by a ghetto type blight. Then in the early 1970s the Avenue was inhabited by maturing “hippies” who opened businesses heavy in the arts & craft scene. Avenue customers were impressed that these hippies were hard working and pretty good business people. The Avenue began to draw customers from all over the City and from many socio – economic levels. This is when the 4th Avenue Street Fair came into being. The Avenue and its businesses have continued to thrive. The Fourth Avenue Merchants Association (FAMA) was formed to support the economic well being of the area businesses and to promote the arts. A group of volunteers

formed the Old Pueblo Trolley to refurbish vintage trolleys and run them between 4th Avenue and the University. FAMA planted

night time entertainment venues. Then there is the magic of people watching while enjoying coffee and a snack at one of the sidewalk

trees and flower pots all along the Avenue for beauty and shade.

cafes. There is something for everyone.

Indeed 4th Avenue has become a magic place. It is magic for the merchant who had a dream and decided to open a business along its tree lined streets. It is magic for its visitors who want a unique shopping and dining experience. It is magic with a plethora of

Of the 100 businesses in the 4th Avenue Business District, 17 businesses have been on the Avenue over 25 years. Caruso’s Restaurant and The Shanty have been around for over 70 years. 70% of the businesses are women owned. The Avenue is the perfect

incubator for new businesses. The 2 annual Street Fairs now rank in the top 100 nationwide. These are popular community events that have been enjoyed by multiple generations. Good food, arts and crafts and entertainment abound. 300,000 visitors are introduced to the Avenue twice a year. The 3 surrounding neighborhoods and 3 service organizations share in 1/2 of the beer sales profits. Numerous other non-profit organizations are afforded an opportunity to promote their charity and causes. The hiring of cleaning personnel, security staff, and supervisors benefits the whole community. The purchase of street fair goods and services pumps money into the local economy. Nearly 60,000 out of town visitors help support Tucson’s hotels and restaurants. With the 4th Avenue Street Fairs as its economic engine, FAMA takes care of sidewalk cleaning, flower planting, tree pruning and trash disposal. FAMA also markets the area with a wide distribution of brochures, TV & radio advertising and monthly sales promotions. Outdoor music venues can be enjoyed on selected weekends. There is always something happening on 4th Avenue. It is the magic street of dreams.

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Still Mine’

‘Blue Jasmine’

‘The Hunt’

‘The Look of Love’

Cate Blanchett plays a New York socialite who moves into her sister’s (Sally Hawkins) modest apartment in San Francisco after everything in her life - including her marriage to a wealthy businessman (Alec Baldwin) falls apart. (PG-13 - 98 minutes)

Mads Mikkelsen plays a former school teacher who has been forced to start over having overcome a tough divorce and the loss of his job. Just as things are starting to go his way, his life is shattered when an untruthful remark throws his small community into a collective state of hysteria. (R 115 minutes)

Steve Coogan plays adult magazine publisher and entrepreneur Paul Raymond who, as a modern-day King Midas, became one of the richest men in Britain at the cost of losing those closest to him. Anna Friel and Imogen Poots also star. (NR - 105 minutes)

Stan: An avid admirer of writer/director Woody Allen’s work since ‘Annie Hall’ (1977), his latest rates high on my list of his ‘relationship films’ as the stark realities of disappointments, neuroses, and finally the acceptances of living life is laid bare. Cate Blanchett delivers a mesmerizingly haunting portrayal of the ‘femme fatale’ in spiral.

Joseph: Destined to provoke compelling conversations born from elevated emotions, “The Hunt” demonstrates that we are all just one little white lie away from eternal and universal condemnation.

Randy: Cate Blanchett delivers one of the year’s most memorable performances. The film is a departure from Woody Allen’s two past releases which were on the somewhat whimsically comical. The movie may not garner any nominations, but Blanchett should definitely remain in the minds of critics come awards season. Also likable were the supporting performances by Sally Hawkins and Andrew Dice Clay.

Joseph: In spite of an amazing amount of authenticity, “The Look of Love” fails to fully impress as it glosses over the life of its subject rather than thoroughly probing into only the pertinent parts and unearthing some significant insight.

“The War of the Worlds” (1953) Veteran fantasy producer George Pal’s take on the classic H.G. James Cromwell and Geneviève Bujold play an elderly couple who fight against local authorities in rural New Brunswick to build their final home. (PG-13 - 102 minutes) Stan: As a ‘Boomer’ and a senior with profound thoughts of these later years, writer/ director Michael McGowan presents a moving story tempered with the right amount of humor as very serious issues are addressed. The fact that it’s based on a true story adds that grounding layer of poignancy to exceptional performances. Randy: The Phoenix Film Festival this year was chock full of moving and memorable films, one of them being this heartfelt drama/comedy starring James Cromwell and Geneviève Bujold. The release date has finally come and has been well worth the wait. The story centers around the challenges of growing old and the power of love. Cromwell is likable and Bujold absolutely shines. Don’t miss this one; yet another small gem in a sea of blockbusters this summer. Joseph: Anchored by a sterling performance from star James Cromwell, “Still Mine” is a deeply affecting motion picture that will both break your heart and genuinely rejuvenate your belief in everlasting love.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Choreographer Allison Orr (‘Trash Dance’) By Joseph J. Airdo that they want to be a garbage man. They know that there are a lot of stereotypes about who they are and why they ended up in this job.

In “Trash Dance,” which is now available on VOD, choreographer Allison Orr joins city sanitation workers on their daily routes to listen, learn and ultimately to try to convince them to collaborate in a unique dance performance thereby finding beauty and grace in garbage trucks - and in the men and women who pick up our trash. “I have worked with a pretty wide range of folks - from maintenance men and rollerskaters to traffic cops and gondoliers in Venice. I found this group of people to be the group that got it from the beginning in a way that no other group ever has. Most people don’t grow up saying

“So I think that they really saw this as an opportunity. I said, ‘Let’s create an event where we tell the true story about who you are and the true story about your job. How if you don’t show up and go to work today, how the city would come to a standstill. That we depend on your work but rarely ever take time to stop and say thank you or really recognize the skill in it.’ “What I hear people tell me is that it is really about honoring the beauty of labor, the dignity of hard work and the art in our everyday lives. I think that both the film and the performances connect people in a way that they might not have expected. There was so much content there for me as an artist to work with. It was really just a blast to get to do the whole project.’” – Allison Orr

‘Planes’ ~ Looks/feels like other Disney films (and other “chase your dream” cartoons). Capitalizes on more entertaining Pixar counterparts. Grade: B-

‘We’re The Millers’ ~ With so much potential and talent, the comedy manages to fall flat at nearly every joke. The only bright spot; Will Poulter. Grade: C

‘Smurfs 2’ ~ Way to ruin one of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons yet again. There was no need for this sequel. Hoping there isn’t another. Grade: D ‘The Conjuring’ ~ Creepy house. ‘The Wolverine’ ~ Superhero fans won’t be disappointed by Jackman’s performance or by the plethora of action. Another ho-hum summer blockbuster. Grade: B-

‘Two Guns’ ~ Run of the mill, forgettable, violent action flick with two likable actors that reminds us that this was a bummer summer for the genre. Grade: C

TEQUILA! Exotico® Tequila

El Mayor® Tequila The award winning line of El Mayor® 100% Agave Tequilas are painstakingly hand-crafted under the watchful eye of third generation master distiller Rodolfo Gonzãlez. Available in four award-winning varieties, all El Mayor Tequilas are created using only the finest Weber Blue Agave plants, handselected and estate-grown on the Gonzãlez family-owned land in the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. El Mayor Blanco is un-aged and remains crisp and light – perfect straight or for premiumization of any margarita. El Mayor Reposado is barrel-aged for up to eighteen months and provides a smooth and mellow tequila experience ideal for sipping or for elevating an existing premium Margarita (or mixed tequila cocktail) to another level. El Mayor Añejo is aged between eighteen months and three years to be full-bodied, sophisticated and luxurious – a true tequila connoisseur’s dream. And finally, the Extra-Anejo is created by continuing the patient aging in small, charred white oak barrels process for a minimum of 37 months and is only bottled when the discerning palate of tequila master Rodolfo Gonzãlez provides his final blessing. Over the past several years, each of the three El Mayor varieties has won the “Best of Show – Platinum Award” (the highest honor bestowed upon a spirits brand at the World Beverage Competition) in addition to garnering other industry accolades including San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Ultimate Beverage Competition and Beverage Tasting Institute! As the Brand continues to win over industry experts it also continues to grow in popularity among super-premium tequila consumers and retailers alike!

Exotico® Tequila Blanco and Reposado were created to fill a gap that was created when consumers began requesting more premium margaritas and tequila cocktails using 100% Blue Agave tequila. This desire to have more premium drinks without paying “Cadillac” margarita prices is the ideal sweet-spot for Exotico Tequilas! Created at Destiladora Gonzalez Gonzalez, the same producer as the super-premium line of El Mayor® tequila as well as Juarez® Tequila – one of the nation’s most popular lines of tequila used in restaurants and bars all across the country, Exotico utilizes the same time-honored techniques and methods to create an incredible tasting and quality tequila perfect for upgrading any tequila cocktail! Award-winning in its own right, Exotico Blanco and Reposado have won awards in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the World Beverage Competition and has been the key ingredient to several “Best Margarita” contests throughout the U.S.

Juarez® Tequila Juarez® Tequilas (Gold, Silver and DSS varieties) have been one of the most popular tequilas trusted by many of the top bars and restaurants in the industry to deliver the very best house margaritas! In fact, it has become one of the top selling tequilas in the U.S. and has been award the coveted Fast Track Growth Brand award for seven years straight for its continued success and phenomenal growth.

The Arizona Aerospace Foundation and the Imperial War Museum of England have unveiled a unique, Soviet-design helicopter at the Pima Air & Space Museum: the MIL Mi-24 Hind-D helicopter. The historic helicopter is on permanent loan from the Imperial War Museum. The successful partnership involved conquering the major endeavors of negotiation, dismantling and shipping the Mi-24 Hind helicopter across the world to Tucson, AZ. After reassembly and restoration, the helicopter is currently on display. This “import” is unlike any Western helicopter and is currently the only non-American helicopter in the Pima Air & Space Museum’s collection.

The MIL Mi-24 Hind-D, serial number B4002, was born in the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant and delivered to the East German Air Force around 1977. Also known as the “Hind,” it served on an East German flying unit that was based at Cottbus Air Base during the reunification of Germany in 1990. The helicopter was taken into service with the reunified German Air Force and given the number 96+21. By 1993, Germany was disposing of most of its Sovietbuilt aircraft, and the B4002 was donated to the Imperial War Museum in the United Kingdom. It was put on display in Duxford until last year when the museum began collaboration with the Pima Air & Space Museum to bring the helicopter to Tucson. Its current

markings are “East German Air Force, 1990.” “We are pleased to collaborate with the Imperial War Museum and bring this unique aircraft to America,” Scott Marchand, Director of Collections and Restoration, of the Pima Air & Space Museum said. He continued, “This helicopter is unlike any Western helicopter ever built, so it’s an intriguing contrast to the museum’s other helicopters.” The Hind was built to pull double duty by combining the features of a heavily armed and armored helicopter gunship with the troop carrying capability of a light-assault helicopter. In 1970, production and deployment of the helicopter to Soviet forces began.

It was also widely sold to the Soviet Union’s allies. The Hind first saw combat in 1977 in Ethiopia during its war with Somalia. The helicopter gained stardom during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan during the 1980s. The Hind proved difficult to shoot down, and its combat prowess helped lead the United States into supplying direct military aid to the Afghans. The Hind has managed to survive the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, and is still in

Boca Tacos y Tequila Becoming a chef was an accident for Maria Mazon, Executive Chef of Boca Tacos y Tequila. Growing up around good food and homecooked meals, Mazon was inspired by the flavors and ingredients around her. The love of food and the desire to bring real authentic Sonoran-Mexican flavors to Tucson, she found herself in the position she is in today. A selftaught chef, Mazon started Para Llevar catering company at the age of 21. From 2007 to 2010, she was the executive chef at Papagayo Mexican Restaurant and Cantina. In May of 2010, she opened Boca Tacos y Tequila, a specialty taco shop. Although, Boca is a taco joint, Mazon loves to cook Mexican food or any type of food with a spicy Latin flare. In Boca’s short two years open, it has become known not only for its gourmet tacos but the fresh and unique salsas prepared every day. Customers can experiment with adding different levels of flavor to their food. Acacia Chef Albert Hall of Acacia is an Arizona native, well-known for his unique culinary style and caustic outlook on the world in general. “Gabacho” has lived in Tucson for 16 years and has burned food at several prestigious Tucson eateries. His infamous Gabacho Salsa is the perfect example of true Latin flavors gone to hell in a hand basket. Years in the making, Chef Hall has “gabachoized” many

classic family salsa recipes to arrive at the perfect blend of Latin ingredients imported from Canada and other exotic locations. He is known as the “Godfather of Haut Sonoran Cuisine” by the ladies that make the tortillas at Mission San Javier. El Saguarito Mexican Food Albert and Blanca Vasquez and their children Jacqueline, Albert Jr. and Emilio, have brought healthier Mexican dining to Tucson since 1989. The family’s roots in Mexican cooking span generations. Blanca grew up in a Douglas, Ariz., at a restaurant where her mother, Maria Herrera, cooked what was voted the Best Mexican Food in the State. Blanca learned to cook alongside her mother, and her love of making hungry customers happy was born. Albert, a native Tucsonan, loved home-style Mexican food. Because Mexican food is often prepared with lard, it was a challenge to find restaurants where Blanca, who was vegetarian, could eat. So in 1989, Albert and Blanca opened El Saguarito Mexican Food. Maria was behind the stove again, helping create El Saguarito’s signature dishes. The Vasquez family prepares their dishes with only the freshest ingredients, using canola oil instead of lard, and are pleased to share their authentic and healthy Mexican cuisine with the community. Lodge on the Desert The restaurant at Lodge on the Desert offers one of the best dining options in Southern Arizona, with new American cuisine. The decor is intimate and richly historic. Executive Chef Ryan Clark blends flavors from America’s melting pot with cooking techniques both traditional and unconventional. A native Tucsonan, Clark’s farmto-table concept and slow-food motif is an ideal complement to the casual elegance of Lodge on the Desert. After initially working as Sous Chef at Fuego Restaurant, he went on to graduate from The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Graduating the dean’s list near the top of his class, Clark was selected by The Continued on page 10...
