As the UFC lightweight world champion, Glendale, Arizona’s Benson Henderson knows that as the top 155-pound mixed martial artist in the world, he’s not in a position to be picking fights. But if he was, you get the impression that for his fourth title defense at Milwaukee’s BMO Harris Bradley Center on August 31, he would choose the man he is facing in the main event of UFC 164: Anthony “Showtime” Pettis.

WHITE

The reason is simple: the two have a history dating back to their days in the WEC organization. That history included an epic 2010 championship fight in which Pettis broke open an even fight in the final round with a spectacular kick in which he propelled himself off the cage to knock Henderson down. The maneuver was immortalized on highlight reels forever as “The Showtime Kick.”

Pettis went on to win the WEC title via unanimous decision, and while the two went on to join the UFC roster in 2011, their paths diverged. Henderson went on to win seven consecutive fights and the lightweight title he has successfully defended three times, while Pettis battled an early loss and injuries before reeling off three straight wins, two of which earned him Knockout of the Night honors. On August 31, they meet again in the biggest UFC lightweight title fight ever. And for Arizona’s Henderson, the wait for redemption is finally over. Relationship Truths: Rules to live by if you’re in a relationship or seeking a relationship with someone. 1.

a.

2.

3.

7.

Don’t think too much. You’ll create a problem that wasn’t there. a.

If you do not trust someone, then why are you with them? You’ll never truly love them if you don’t trust them.

Every day that you spend together may not always be a fairy tale, but you must constantly find something new that you love about that person. You may not find something new every day or every week, but once you realized there’s nothing new coming into the relationship it’s time to freshen things up or make some changes. Find ways to keep the relationship new, fun and exciting.

Every relationship has its own problems, but what makes it perfect is when you want to be there when everything sucks. a.

August 21st, 2013 - August 27th, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

You can’t be half in half out of a relationship. If you’re going to be with someone you have to give 100% of yourself. Remember a relationship is 100/100 not 50/50.

A successful relationship requires falling in love many, but always with the same person. a.

5.

A good relationship isn’t something you can force, it comes naturally. If you and that person truly want to be together then everything will eventually fall into place.

Love cannot live where there is no trust. a.

4.

a. As someone who has been cheated on in the past I don’t understand the point behind cheating on someone. As Johnny Depp once said, “If you fall in love with two people at the same time pick the second one because if you truly loved the first one you wouldn’t have fallen for the second one.” If you feel the need to cheat stop and think why you feel this way. Be honest with your partner; work it out the best way for your relationship, even if that means leaving the person. It’s always better to be hurt by the truth then by a lie.

Being in a relationship is a full time job. If you aren’t ready, then don’t apply. a.

6.

6

Good relationships don’t just happen, they take time, patience, and two people who truly want to be together.

There’s no such thing as a perfect relationship. Everyone is going to have their ups and downs, but what makes a relationship perfect for those people is when they realize that they want to be together even during the down times.

Relationships aren’t a test, so why cheat?

8.

Happiness is a journey not a destination. a.

9.

I’m guilty of this, taking a situation thinking in to it too much and picking a fight over nothing. If something is bothering you, talk to the person, becåause most likely there’s nothing wrong and it’s all in your head.

Happiness is not a destination in a relationship; it’s a journey you take every day with that person.

The longer you wait for something the more you’ll appreciate it when you get it. Anything worth having is worth the wait. a.

Patience is a virtue, and if you’re anything like me, it’s not your strong virtue. Appreciate the little things that come to you as you wait for the one thing you want.

10. Words and hearts should be handled with care for words when spoken and hearts when broken are the hardest things to repair. a.

Actions and words can’t be taken back after they’re out in the open. Make sure you don’t regret what comes from you because even though you may be forgiven, what you did or said may never be forgotten.

ARIZONA EDUCATION: AN OVERVIEW Arizona’s educational quality, at both the secondary and collegiate level, is constantly regarded as below the standard for how we expect our children to be educated. In 2012, edweek.org ranked Arizona 44th in overall education for elementary and high schools—which should scare some students and parents. We also hear cries about Arizona State consistently being “ranked as one of the top party schools,” and “it’s a jock school”—there’s probably a “bro” or “dude” following the statement by the incoming freshman that proudly restate the moniker—which is also not something you want to hear when considering an academic institution for your children. But, are Arizona’s educational choices really that bad? Are our children doomed if they go to high school or college in state at our “subpar” institutions? No. No they are not. And, as a matter of fact, there are some pretty good schools here in the Grand Canyon State.

Tucson?” Well, your children are in luck. The top ranked schools are scattered throughout the Phoenix metro area, and throughout the state. Schools in Gilbert, Tolleson and Flagstaff made the national 100 list, and schools in the west valley, central Phoenix, Oro Valley, and Casa Grande made the overall list, too. But what about college? They’re all schools for jocks or party schools, right? Wrong.

Let’s start with the high schools:

Not a single college in Arizona made the top 20 in the Princeton Review’s 2013 annual list of party schools—contrary to what many freshman party-goers were hoping for. Now, Arizona doesn’t lay claim to an Ivy League college or the likes of Stanford or Berkeley, but neither do a lot of other states west of New England, not named California. Arizona does, however, have many nationally ranked programs within the borders of our insanely hot state, and the cost is definitely a huge selling point, too.

Basis Tucson, a charter school, was ranked as the number one high school in the country for years in a row, and though its ranking dropped this year, it is still holding strong in the number two spot nationally, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2013 annual rankings. That’s right, this year’s second best high school in the country is in Tucson, AZ. Then, there’s Basis Scottsdale at the number five spot. Both schools have a college readiness ranking of 100/100. That means that if a child graduates from either school, he or she could conceivably attend any university in the nation and be ready to excel. Arizona has seven schools in the top one hundred and 123 out of Arizona’s 514 schools made the list out of the 21,035 schools across the country that were reviewed last year. Roughly one out of five of Arizona’s schools made the U.S. News list of best high schools. “But, are the schools just in affluent areas? What if I can’t afford to live in Scottsdale, or the Catalina Foothills of

Based on the 2013 U.S. News and World Report’s rankings, ASU has over fifty programs ranked in the top 100 and many of those programs are in the top 25. ASU’s Supply Chain Management/ Logistics bachelor’s program rank 3rd in the nation, the Aeronautical Engineering program is 21st, and the Law School ranks 29th in the nation. ASU also ranks 4th for “Up and Coming Programs.” The University of Arizona has a nationally ranked medical school for both primary care (44th) and research (70th) programs, as well as top ranked pharmacy (10th), and economics (36th) degrees. Though Northern Arizona University can’t claim a national ranking as high as its southern counterparts in the state, it does have a solid Speech-Language Pathology program (106th) and Physical Therapy Doctorate (34th) as well as other nationally ranked programs like education (108th) and its biological sciences comes in at 160th, which might not seem like the most astounding number, but when ranked against the

August 21st, 2013 - August 27th, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

other approximately 2,700 4 year colleges (http://nces.ed.gov/) in the nation, it seems pretty impressive. The other major plus for the three public universities in our state is the cost. Residents have access to numerous top ranked programs for a price ranging from just $7,500 a year to $10,000 a year. The cost to attend an out-of-state, or private university, would cost 2-3 times as much just for tuition alone and doesn’t include the cost of room and board as well as other expenses that may be mitigated by living at home with parents. Arizona has educational options and it’s about time people start to recognize them. Are many of the high school teachers overworked and underpaid? Most likely. Overall, can some of the aspects in the state’s educational system be improved? Definitely. But, instead of discounting the state’s ability to teach our students as a whole, why aren’t we looking at these thriving schools and asking what they are doing differently and how can our school do the same? Parents and students need to research their education options and see if there are realistic alternatives to attending an underachieving school that they happen to live within the district boundaries of. There may be a great school right around the corner waiting for your child. As for the colleges, students can live in Arizona where the party scene is robust, the weather is beautiful, and now, the academic quality is really starting to make waves on the national level, all with an affordable price of tuition and reasonable cost of living. It’s time to put down the applications to out-of-state schools and research those in Flagstaff, Tempe, and Tucson. 13 SMART PODCASTS

Want to get smarter during your commute? There are a lot of fantastic podcasts that will teach you new things in a thoroughly entertaining way. Here are 13 podcasts that will expand your brain with cutting-edge science and cultural analysis.

1. Radiolab Radiolab is a beautifully produced podcast that weaves together science and personal narratives into a thematic whole. Host Jad Abumrad’s background in music composition and production adds a lyrical and poetic feeling. Every month the main show centers on a theme like bliss or color and is composed of several segments with interviews. The interviews can be with experts or just people with an interesting story to tell. Shorter features about specific stories, like ant invasions or the founder of the Heimlich maneuver, are released to fill in the gaps between the main shows. The main shows are about an hour and shorts between 15-20 minutes

2. The Infinite Monkey Cage This British chat show is hosted by physicist Brian Cox and comedian Robin Ince and consists of a panel of other scientists, comedians and celebrities. Each show has a loose topic of discussion like space exploration. The show is fast pace and very funny if you like

British humor. The negative is the podcast only has a six week run twice a year, and shows are only 29 minutes each. New episodes won’t be out until June.

3. The Dork Forest The Dork Forest is a safe place where all the Rangers of the Dork Forest can go as deep into whatever dorkdom they have. Comedian Jackie Kashian interviews people one on one about whatever obsesses them in life. The topics can range from beekeeping to comic books. Since Kashian is a comedian many of her guests are also standup

4. Stuff You Should Know

Hosts Chuck Bryant and Josh Clark chat about a topic and break down the complex science or sociology behind it into easy to understand concepts. The conversational tone of the podcast makes you feel more like you are sitting with friends instead of being lectures. There is a real sense of curiosity from the hosts as they talk about subjects from platypuses to zombies. The bite size podcasts are only about 25 minutes each but come out at least once a week, sometimes more.

something cool that is interesting to know. Shows are around a half an hour and come out about twice a week. This podcast like Stuff You Should Know is put out by howstuffworks.com. http:// www.howstuffworks.com/hswpodcast.ht...”> How Stuff Works puts out a few podcasts on a variety of topics and is worth checking out for some additional recommendations.

6. Story Collider This is a really neat podcast where people tell stories about how science has touched their lives. The focus here is story telling. Participants and stories range from scientists falling in and out of love, bartenders studying quantum physics and people struggling with disease and grief. They are compelling tales that take a human look at science and technology. Podcasts are usually just shy of 15 minutes in length and come out once a week.

7. Star Talk Radio comedians making for good banter and funny off topic asides. She also gets guests like comic book author Bill Willingham and novelist Lois Mcmaster Bujold. It is a grab bag of a show, where you always learn about something interesting. Podcasts are usually an hour long and come out once a week.

5. Stuff to Blow Your Mind The podcast explores the possible science behind fringe phenomenon like human lightning rods or the applications of cutting edge technology, like 3-D printers, and what is means for society, or sometimes the topic is just

Science hero Neil Degrasse Tyson has a podcast, and he rocks it with his late night DJ voice. Sometimes the podcast focuses on interviews with celebrities like Alan Rickman and Anthony Bourdain. 8. 99% Invisible The very concept of this show is cool. It is exploring “the 99% invisible activity that shapes our world”. The focus is on how design and technology impact the world around us in ways we don’t even really notice. It is beautifully produced and edited, telling compact and complete stories. The website offers interesting supplementary material to the features. If you like Radiolab this is one to check out. Sadly this lovely show is only between 11-25 minutes in length and comes out every two weeks.

9. Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy This podcast hosted by John Joseph Adams and David Barr Kirtley will be of particular interest to fans of science fiction and fantasy literature. The first part of each podcast is an interview with a well-known or hot author in science fiction or fantasy. Recent guest have included Hugh Howey, Naolo Hopkins and Gregory Maguire. The interviews touch on some fascinating topics about the author’s works. The second part of the show is a discussion between the hosts and another guest, who is generally an expert on whatever the day’s topic is. Usually the discussion topic is thematically tied to the author interview and ranges from self-publishing to fencing. Episodes length from one to two hours about every two weeks.

10. Quirks and Quarks This weekly radio show hosted by Bob McDonald is a great way to stay current on interesting science news across all disciplines. The show consists of several segments about different stories in the science news, and in each segment there is a brief conversation and Q&A with the scientist behind the findings. The show is very polished

and the host is engaging and professional. The podcast has a lot jammed into an hour making it a good overview. The excellent website also allows listeners to pick out the segments they are interested in hearing instead of the entire show.

11. Science Friday Host Ira Flatow and a panel of expert guests discuss science topics in the news. The two hour radio show is chopped into small segments and distributed via the RSS feed in short little topical features that run around ten minutes long. There is a new program once a week that is presented in 7-9 segments for podcast listeners. This is a good option if you need flexibility and can’t commit to a long podcast.

12. The Tolkien Professor If you love Tolkien this is the podcast for you. Presented by Dr. Corey Olsen a professor of English at Washington College, this podcast is solely about the in depth study of Tolkien’s works. How in depth? The show is currently on seminar 33 about the Simarllion. The show is really erratic in scheduling, putting out 2-8 episodes a month.

13. Professor Blastoff This show isn’t exactly science, more science adjacent. Comedians Tig Notaro, Kyle Dunnigan and David Huntsberger have a weekly conversation with a guest about topics that interest them from science to philosophy to the metaphysical. Sometimes the guests are other comedians and sometimes actual scientists. The conversations are funny and often times thought provoking. If you are a new listener you’ll probably need to get past the intro and into the subject matter to warm up to the show. The shows come out once a week and run a little over an hour. REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Ain’t Them Bodies Saints’ Casey Affleck plays an outlaw who escapes from prison and sets out across the Texas hills to reunite with his wife (Rooney Mara) and the daughter he has never met. Ben Foster also stars. (NR - 97 minutes) Randy: A beautifully shot and well-acted American drama. Affleck and Mara shine in their tragically romantic roles. Joseph: There is an awful lot of substance packed into several aspects of “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.” - except its story, which is so meager that it cannot sustain viewers’ interest for the film’s relatively brief runtime.

‘Spark: A Burning Man Story’ Filmmakers Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter provide an inside look at the Burning Man organization and the challenges it is facing as it grows in global recognition and popularity. (NR 112 minutes)

‘Austenland’ Keri Russell plays a woman who, obsessed with the BBC production of “Pride and Prejudice,” travels to a Jane Austen theme park in search for her perfect gentleman. (PG-13 - 97 minutes) Randy: A light-hearted take on an otherwise stuffy literally author. Not sure who the target audience is as it is quite silly. Stan: Director/Co-writer Jerusha Hess’ wonderfully enchanting view of a Jane Austen ‘wonderland’, is thoroughly inviting for avid readers of the romance fiction of the English novelist. A vacation there would be exceptional!

Stan: Learning of Burning Man upon my arrival in Arizona a mere 14 years ago from a friend who participates, this insight on the ideals of a new world based on freedom and inclusion, is enticing ‘must see’ filmmaking. Randy: A perfect mix of backstory, current challenges associated w/ growth of the

‘Europa Report’

‘Savannah’

An international crew of astronauts undertakes a privately funded mission to investigate the possible existence of alien life on Jupiter’s fourth largest moon. Stars include Michael Nyqvist, Sharlto Copely and Dan Fogler. (PG-13 - 90 minutes)

Jim Caviezel plays a postCivil War aristocrat who seeks his fortune as a market hunter on the Savannah River and clashed with the government while exercising his right to free enterprise. Along the way, Allen remains deeply loyal to his business partner (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and falls for an irrepressible Southern belle (Jaimie Alexander). (PG13 - 101 minutes)

Randy: Far from perfect, but more entertaining & tense than big budget sci-fi flicks released this year. Interesting concept & execution. Joseph: Chances are, if you are able to stay awake throughout the entire duration of “Europa Report,” you would make an excellent astronaut. The new sciencefiction thriller plays up the science but skimps on the thrills.

event & visual scenery. Black Rock City here I come. Joseph: The up-close and personal tour into something so exceptionally eccentric and especially exotic is the primary appeal of “Spark: A Burning Man Story.” It is a titillating tour that is well-worth taking.

Joseph: “Savannah” is the cinematic equivalent of a folk song; the melody is certainly pleasurable but the lyrics sing an all-too-familiar tune. It exits your memory the moment that you exit the movie theater.

Across the land of the USA, late August/early September signals its ‘Back To School’ time for various levels of education. That in turn, prompted me to think of my favorite ‘school-themed’ movie. I asked those in my immediate orbit for their favorite ‘School’ film! The responses are just as broad as our generational ages as each of us presented solid themed movies on the school attending experience.

‘Back To School’ Movies!

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director David Lowery (‘Ain’t Them Bodies Saints’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“First and foremost, they are all amazing actors whom I have been fans of. More than anything else, the reason that I wanted them - aside from their talent was the fact that I felt that they all could blend into the time period and setting of the movie. I wanted actors who could be part of that texture and part of that ruffian feel that is part and parcel with small-town Texas - especially the time period in which the movie takes place. “They all have a quality to them that is distinctly un-modern and that was really important to me. I did not want them to stick out. I did not want them to feel like modern person in an oldfashioned town. I wanted them to feel like they have grown up in these places, lived there

and spent their whole lives in this one little area. That was something that I felt that all three of them could completely disappear into that world. “What I hope that people take away [from the film] is the feeling that they have gained a new perspective through a very old-fashioned lens. That is a weird way to put it, but I wanted to make a movie that felt old and familiar and almost comforting in how traditional it was and yet because it is so familiar you are able to access very immediate and very deep emotions that are hopefully applicable to whatever is going on in your life. As a filmmaker, you always hope that something that means a lot to you will mean a lot somebody else. I hope that they feel that

LIFE SKILLS 101 • WHAT YOU WON’T LEARN IN SCHOOL… 32 CRUCIAL LIFE SKILLS FOR A SELF-RELIANT ‘YOU’ By the time you’re 30, you’ll be hit with the crushing truth of just how much the grown folks didn’t teach you when you were in school. And, while liberals and conservatives haggle over whether public schools need more funding or more lessons on the Ten Commandments, we think all can agree there are some very basic, useful things that our children really, really should know. INDUSTRIAL ARTS: EMERGENCY REPAIRS This does not require a great deal of elaboration. Quite simply, there are certain things a person who is about to be living on their own needs to know how to do. And building a bird house is not one of them. A few are as follows: How to Patch and Paint a Wall So You Can Get Your Deposit Back From Your Landlord; Identifying Which Wires in Your House Will Kill You if You Touch Them; What to do When You Wake Up to Find Your Toilet/ Refrigerator/Hot Water Heater/Air Conditioner/Sink is Puking Water Onto Your Floor; When to Call the Repair Guy; How to Figure Out if the Repair Guy is Screwing You; Foreign Objects You’re Going to Try to Put in the Microwave at Some Point so Let’s Just Get it Out of Your System Now. BUSINESS SUCCESS: MEETING THE RIGHT PEOPLE All of those successful people you see around town, with their convertibles and huge televisions… Approximately 100 percent of them got where they are because they had three things. All three are absolutely essential, but one of them is almost never mentioned. They are: Talent, Hard Work & Randomly Meeting the Right People and Leaving a Good Impression. The autobiographies of famous people will do everything they can to downplay that third part, because it has the element of sheer luck. People get offended when you mention it, because they think it somehow undermines

the first two. But remember, we said you need all three. Just wait and you’ll see. SMART HEALTH: HOW TO STOP THROWING AWAY YOUR MONEY Go to the drug aisle in your grocery store. In between the pills and the vitamins will be a huge shelf full of herbal supplements that promise to do everything from helping you lose weight to easing joint pain to making your brain work better. And it’s all garbage. All of it. Worse, it’s garbage that we spend $34 billion a year on, almost a third as much as we spend on prescription drugs that actually do something. Just to be clear: Scientists have spent billions in government money carefully testing the effectiveness of this stuff. Their results? No, echinacea can’t cure your cold. Gingko doesn’t do anything for your brain, glucosamine and chondroitin won’t fix your arthritis. Hoodia gordonii won’t help you lose weight. In short, don’t believe the hype. HOME ECONOMICS: HOW TO COOK CHEAP FOOD THAT WON’T KILL YOU Most of you will gain weight in college. You’ll be poor, and cheap food makes you fat, as adding salt and fat is the easiest way to make poor quality food taste good. Ramen noodles, Taco Bell burritos, six-dollar pizzas from Papa John’s... all of it is dirt cheap, and all contains way more calories than you’re going to burn while sleeping through classes and playing Guitar Hero. Fortunately, there are ways around this if you’re willing to put in a little time. As it turns out, spices are also cheap, as are some meats, and dried pasta, and vegetables. You just have to combine them the right way. But no matter what you come up with, it would be extremely difficult to cook something as unhealthy as a Quarter-Pounder Value Meal. responsibility than paying for their own video games, these are the great mysteries of life – and they shouldn’t have to be.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION: PRACTICAL SELF-DEFENSE We’re calling this course “Practical Self-Defense” but a more accurate title would be, “How To Get Away From Somebody Who is Trying to Mug or Rape You.” Some of you guys who grew up on The Matrix still fantasize about beating the snot out of a street full of thugs in a fight that looks like a choreographed dance. This class will not teach you how to do that. No class will teach you how to do that. Realistically, if you are going to be civilized and successful parents, homeowners and taxpayers, the odds are you will never be overwhelmingly good at fighting. However, if your schedule allows, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai classes in your spare time will keep you in tip top shape and plenty prepared to throw down and stand your ground should the need arise. MONEY MANAGEMENT Yes, math is taught in school. No, that kind of math isn’t doing anyone any practical good. You will never need to do coordinate geometry while paying your taxes, and you’ll never have to work with radians at the grocery store. Unless kids are fortunate enough to have been brought up in a rare household that isn’t bad at literally everything pertaining to money, they’re going to have a rough time once they’ve been cast out of the academic womb. What percentage of their monthly budget should go to rent? How much money will they have to make in order to avoid sharing a tent in the woods with four other people? For kids who’ve never faced greater financial

HOW TO SET GOALS AND MANAGE TIME Want to know how to get anything done in life? Our school system doesn’t emphasize it, but it’s perhaps one of the most important skills one could ever attain. The research that has come out lately is groundbreaking…everything from eliminating multi-tasking, using blocks of uninterrupted time where phone and email are off, prioritized to-do lists, urgent but unimportant vs. non-urgent but important tasks, etc. Check out the book 7 Simple Steps to Build a Successful Mindset. If you have ever found yourself being busy all day only to wonder what you accomplished at the end of it, then you need to learn this stuff. Understanding productivity will give you such an advantage over other people it’s hardly even fair.

HOW TO SAVE AND INVEST Again, people are never taught how to build wealth, which is why we have a nation in credit card debt. Moreover, they are never taught the power of passive income streams and how to really break free from the rat race of working 9-to-5. There is a whole body of literature on this topic which is never even touched upon Continued on page 20...

IQ & COMMON SENSE Who Wins the Battle of Book vs. Street Smarts? The IQ test is certainly a good estimate of one’s intellectual intelligence, but what about common sense? We all know that one person who is intellectually smart, but lacks basic common sense. So stands the question. Does intellectual intelligence have any correlation with common sense? Many believe so, simply because the ability to make a “smart” choice or decision in life requires some level of intelligence. But to what degree does intelligence play a role? Intelligence has been proven to have a powerful genetic component. It’s important to keep this in mind before diving deeper. There are a number of environmental aids and hindrances as well, including a stimulating environment, parental encouragement, good schooling, specific reasoning skills, continued practice, and so on. All of which certainly help a person become more intelligent early on. Likewise, there are certain biological factors that are nevertheless environmental: prenatal care, nutrition (especially in early childhood), freedom from disease and physical trauma, and so on, all playing a role in our pre-adult lives. One idea that has been widely presented is that intelligent people often share similar characteristics that often classify them as “intelligent”. People with higher IQ’s tend to be very analytical of situations

and ideas and often analyze something too much to the point that it ultimately hinders smart choices in life. Being overly analytical of things may cause people to perceive you as less intelligent when it comes to common sense, simply because the thing you are being analytical about may actually be very simple. Also, being overly analytical to a situation can result in inappropriate behaviors and actions. Distinguishing the difference between “book smarts” and “street smarts” can be both simple and puzzling, but always quite interesting. Ultimately, it comes down to the different degree of “smarts” being studied and how the intelligence is applied. We have all heard the term “Nutty Professor”, which brings to mind the highly intelligent, yet socially inept individual; excelling in the academic world, yet failing miserably in the realm of common sense. So, is there actually an evolutionary explanation for why this phenomenon exists? The collective studies of several professors and researchers around the world have concluded that the association between intelligence and personality is that an increasing relative level of IQ brings with it a tendency differentially to over-use general intelligence in problem-solving, and to over-ride those instinctive and spontaneous forms of evolved behavior which could be termed common sense.

August 21st, 2013 - August 27th, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Research furthermore suggests that a tendency to rely on analytic ability to problem-solve everyday situations results in inappropriate behaviors and ideas, whereas one with common sense would simply act or react “appropriately” without any level of calculation or deep thought. These often strange or inappropriate analytical responses and behaviors in social situations have been found to stem from personality traits of Openness to Experience, one of the only personality traits that is highly correlated with IQ. This “clever silliness” as it has been coined, is characterized by a preference for novelty, experiencing new things and ideas, and appreciation for art and aesthetics. This of course sounds admirable, but when it comes to lacing a pair of tennis shoes or fixing a sandwich, where does basic logic fit into the grand scheme of things? Do all high IQ people lack common sense? Certainly not, however the person with both a high IQ and high level of common sense, or Practical

Intelligence, is without a doubt a rare breed of genius. In short, defining “smart” and what constitutes “intelligence” is no easy task and more-less anyone’s guess. Some of the smartest people in the world do not have a college degree or higher level of education. Many successful entrepreneurs have failed IQ tests miserably. There are folks who are socially smart, but could never do their own taxes. There are people who are street smart, but can barely understand the purpose of a handshake. There are people who have tremendous common sense, but can hardly comprehend the concept of gravity. There are people who are brilliant businessmen, mathematicians, engineers, and designers - but could never find something in their closet if their own life depended on it. In other words, “who the heck knows” is probably the smartest way to end the debate.

MICKEY MOUSE

World Series, U.S. Final: Teams TBA. From Williamsport, Pa.

The movie may not be Oscar-worthy, but there are Academy Award winners to spare in this would-be comedy that’s a thematic spin on “The Birdcage.” Robin Williams starred in that film, and he also turns up in this tale of a divorced couple (Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton) pretending still to be married for the sake of their soon-towed adopted son (Ben Barnes). Susan Sarandon is another Oscar owner in the cast. Katherine Heigl and Amanda Seyfried appear as well.

Scottsdale & Arrowhead • www.skinsultry.com

We need leadership today more than ever before in America and in our world. We need more courageous leadership from parents in the home… more honest and focused leadership from business…and, more principled and moral leadership from government. The great Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once said: “there are three types of people, there are people who make things happen, there are people who watch what’s happening and there are people who don’t have the slightest idea what’s happening.” I agree. In America today, we need more of the people who make things happen. These are the people who are going to take us into the future, and, by that I mean people who have vision and the courage to take the risks that lead to solutions to serious problems that face us as a nation today. This type of leader is called a transactional leader. This is the person who gets things done. This doesn’t mean that they do it all themselves…it means that they get things done with and through others. That is the TRUE measure of leadership. People who are able to get extraordinary performances from ordinary people. They are able to uplift and inspire by words and deeds and get others to share their vision and perform at levels far beyond anything they’ve ever done before. These are the kind of leaders we need more of today. A question I’ve been asked in the past

is: “Are leaders born or made?” I’m sure there are many varying opinions on this, but I am of the opinion that leaders are made not born. Clearly, some people feel a strong urging to lead and they seek the people and the knowledge that enable them to fulfill that calling. Talking with many great leaders, I’ve found two things are very clear. One, they’ve all trained with great leaders and learned from them, and secondly, they all considered themselves to be great followers. The reason for this is simple. We all have tendency to become like the people we most admire. The more time we spend either with or reading about the people we most admire…the more we become like them. You actually begin to absorb the qualities and characteristics of these leaders and soon you begin to talk and act and behave like them. As you sustain these qualities and develop the behaviors of a leader, over a period of time…you become a leader yourself. I believe every person has inside of them a desire to be committed to something bigger than themselves. Most, however never act on that desire for something. Leaders, however can visualize that something. They can see it clearly and that vision motivates them into action. Leaders are clearly visionaries and are intensely ‘action’ oriented. They get a concept, get a mission and then they literally launch themselves like a rocket headlong into it. It’s the vision that gives the leader a feeling of destiny and purpose while the passion sustains them when obstacles arise. Literally, they see themselves as a force of nature and can’t be stopped. If you feel these qualities in yourself or you would like to develop these qualities…by all means act on it. The world needs more of you. -Mack Newton Mack Newton is an 8th Degree Black Belt, Senior Master Instructor, Global Tae Kwon-Do Federation International and Chairman of the World Technical Committee

A COLLA“BREW”TIVE EFFORT Heroes 19 Events Planned - Beer Ready, All Proceeds Donated

The Arizona Craft Brewers Guild is pleased to announce that Heroes 19, a special craft beer brewed in honor of the 19 victims of the Yarnell Fire, is now available statewide. The American Brown Ale is the result of a “collabrewtive effort” by all 35 members of the Brewers Guild, and 100 percent of the proceeds of the blend of 19 different hops will benefit Prescott Firefighter Charities and the families of the fallen. Many breweries, bars and restaurants have planned special events for the tapping of the new beer. SanTan Brewing Company, Coach & Willies, Bourbon Jacks and Irish Republic held a wonderful family fun event with Chandler firefighters, fire trucks, food specials and special toasts for the fallen where ‘Heroes 19” was officially tapped. On Thursday, Aug. 22nd all BJ’s Brewery locations in Arizona will be tapping their kegs. Heroes 19 will be $5 a pint with all proceeds going to charity, and BJ’s will also donate 20 percent of all food sales (for those that bring in a flyer available at craftbeeraz.com.) Sleepy Dog Brewery in Gilbert will also be hosting an event with live music, food specials, a 15 percent discount for service members and the tapping of Heroes 19. STUDY HARD: AND EAT THIS! Chocolate. Yes, chocolate, it’s really high in flavonoids, which may help neurological functioning. It likely works by increasing blood flow to the brain. Stick to dark, bittersweet chocolate and no more than a few squares a day, about half an ounce. Or stir a teaspoon of cocoa powder into your Greek yogurt. Avoid alkalized or Dutch processed cocoa, which has fewer antioxidants than regular cocoa.

Poring over textbooks, organizing lecture notes, and prepping for tests takes a toll on your brain. Give your gray matter the fuel it needs to help you stay focused and absorb what you learn in the classroom. Milk and Yogurt. Low-fat dairy products are packed with protein and B vitamins that may help you concentrate and work efficiently, says dietitian Marjorie Nolan, RD, a nutrition counselor and personal trainer in New York City. She recommends plain, nonfat Greek yogurt, which is super high in protein and has no added sugar. Milk and yogurt are fortified with vitamin D, which also supports brain health. Oats. It’s hard to beat oatmeal at breakfast. Oatmeal is a minimally processed whole grain, which you digest slowly, letting it provide steady energy to your brain and body.

38

Blueberries. One of nature’s perfect foods, blueberries are packed with antioxidants and phytochemicals, the compounds that make them a deep-blue color. Blueberries may help maintain peak brain performance by ridding the brain of harmful molecules called free radicals. A recent study indicates that blueberries may improve both learning and August 21st, 2013 - August 27th, 2013

working memory. Salmon. We need fat for our brains. Salmon is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids, healthy fats that studies suggest may aid brain development, protect the brain from deterioration, and enhance brain function. The brain can’t synthesize omega-3s, so they are an essential component for the diet.

Dark Green Vegetables. Spinach, asparagus, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts all provide folate, which appears crucial to brain function. Low levels have been linked to cognitive deterioration and dementia. Make sure to eat a good mix of veggies rather than favoring just one or two. Variety seems to be very important because a deficiency in just about any mineral can create problems for the brain.

Beans. Bring on the burritos! Beans supply high-quality protein, magnesium, and B vitamins, all of which help your brain work as it should. Because beans also have lots of fiber and complex carbohydrates, you’ll digest them slowly and benefit from them over the course of the day. Across the board, all beans provide about the same amounts of protein and fiber. They are also good sources of omega-3s and antioxidants, particularly kidney beans. Try to eat one-half to two-thirds cup of beans every day. Coffee. Caffeinated coffee gives you a much-needed dose of early morning energy, and, in small doses, it can also help you concentrate. The key word here is “small.” Stick to 8-ounce cups instead of grande-size portions to avoid caffeine jitters -- and extra calories, if you’re a latte, mocha, or cappuccino drinker.

All Day - Every Day!

Walnuts. While all nuts provide brain fuel in the form of protein and both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, walnuts are best. One study found that students who regularly ate walnuts were better at deductive reasoning. The healthy fat in nuts is still fat, so you don’t want to eat too many. Stick to a daily 1-ounce serving, just enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Hempseed. Hempseed is a real superfood and provides brainpowering protein, omega-3s and -6s, and a variety of antioxidants and other nutrients. Often packaged as a powder, the seeds of Cannabis sativa -- better known as hemp -- are totally versatile. Their nutty flavor blends well with lots of breakfast foods and baked goods. Stir a couple of spoonfuls into oatmeal, mix with milk or yogurt, sprinkle on cereal, or bake into muffins.

BEER! Seasons change…and beers change with them. Seasonal beers have become the hottest thing in craft beer and further proof that the more things change the more they stay the same. Why is that? Because you can go your entire craft beer drinking life without ever trying a seasonal release and still be perfectly happy. Why you would want to do that, I can’t explain, but you theoretically could. However, seasonal brewing is really the history of brewing. In the days before modern refrigeration, all brewing was

seasonal. Every ingredient available, the yeast used, and the techniques employed varied as the seasons changed. Our modern seasonal releases reflect the rich history of beer by highlighting the traditional styles available during certain periods of the year. Typically, these are lighter more refreshing beers in the spring and summer and dark more warming beers in the fall and winter. Most seasonals will have a modern twist on these classic styles given more modern brewing techniques and availability of more diverse ingredients.

How do you stay in touch and make sure you know what is out there and when the seasonal beers are released? There are a variety of ways. Most of us drink craft beer at a local establishment. This could be a restaurant or pub. If your local watering hole carries seasonals and limited editions, your server will know what’s available. Make friends with your servers. They will remember you and let you know when the good stuff and rare beers are on tap. Connect to your favorite breweries. The world is becoming more tech and social savvy every day. Craft breweries are no

exception. They have websites, Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, and newsletters. An easy way to find out when they are releasing seasonals is to get connected through one of their social outlets. The great thing about the fall season is we have the ability to try three entirely different types of beers. The first to hit the shelves are the pumpkin beers, followed by Oktoberfest beers, and finishing up with Fresh Hop beers. There may be a few others, but these are the ones you will see out the most. Pumpkin beers are somewhat enigmatic, they tend to be darker, richer beers made with traditional pumpkin pie spices. One of the most exciting is Grand Canyon’s Pumpkin Springs Porter. Named after the Grand Canyon phenomena, Pumpkin Springs Porter is an ale brewed with pumpkin, squash, sweet potatoes and spices. This porter is dark and smooth with a warm finish and pairs perfectly with the flavors of fall. Pumpkin Springs is a huge pumpkin shaped pond along the Colorado River, overflowing with murky hot springs water stained orange from trace minerals and arsenic. The Pumpkin Porter has none of these minerals and chemicals in it. Instead it is made from the purest of waters and has developed quite a following. One of the earliest released pumpkin beers, this beer has grown to be a favorite over the past couple of years. Try it early because it doesn’t last too long. Pumpkin beers overall are very popular. You can also find first time releases from New Belgium, Alaskan and Anderson Valley.

New Belgium’s Pumpkick has all the traditional flavorings but adds a little hint of cranberries and lemongrass to give your taste buds a slightly tart counter point to the spices. Alaskan is adding some of the same smoked barley used in their award winning smoked porter to bring a different flavor to their beer. Anderson Valley’s Fall Hornin, a play on their slogan “BahlHornin” which means “Good Drinking,” is exactly what you would expect from this Northern California powerhouse. A brilliant, deep copper hue and creamy beige-colored head, with inviting aromas of caramelized malt and baking bread and highlights of cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin and seasonal spices. This beer has a pleasantly creamy

mouthfeel and a silky body that embraces the sweet caramel flavors and tang of spices (with just a hint of hops) finally ending in a smooth, round finish. Of course, you will see Epic Brewing’s Fermentation Without Representation, Lakefront Pumpkin Lager (one of the few commercially available pumpkin beers that is a lager), Tommyknocker Pumpkin and Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale will all be back. Look for all of these great beers at your favorite beer store. On to Oktoberfest beers. Start with the always popular, traditionally brewed Left Hand Continued on page 46...

Hello again everyone, this week I’d like to tell you about my weekend trip to Cali. The plan was to get “Stoned” so to speak at their Seventeenth Anniversary Celebration and generally noodle around in the meantime. Wow, what a noodle!

California (CRAFT BEER) Dreamin’

The fun Began at Monkey Paw Brewing with Pineapple Xpress Extra Pale then over to Blind Lady Ale House to taste their in house Automatic Brewing sour beers. Of course from there it was over to Stone World Gardens and then to Hamilton’s tavern for a HESS Brewing Tap Takeover. All in the course of a few hours! And yes I had a Designated (my beautiful wife) Driver. Next day it was off to Churchill’s Pub for lunch before the Stone Festival began. Fifty all craft taps and not one wasted. Let me say that I have now found my favorite craft beer bar in the world. Owner Ivan Derezin is so into craft beer that he keeps an insulated and cooled Sea Container full of kegs in the back area of the pub. Yes I said SEA CONTAINER. Hundreds of kegs, each dated and organized for the purposes of resting/aging. It’s an amazing sight to see. The Stone Beer Festival was indeed an amazing thing as every brewery was on point with great beer. You’d think we had enough right? WRONG! From the fest we headed to Lost Abbey Brewing where I proceeded to lose my shirt in a PORT MONGO DIPA chugging contest. At least the beer was great!

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

Saving the best for last, Sunday was all about The Bruery. We got a special tour and spent the day “Pulling Nails” in their Barrel room and tasting some of the rarest brews known to man. Good weekend? Yea kinda………….. Until Next Week, Cheers!

Oktoberfest. Left Hand starts brewing this beer in the summer with ingredients imported exclusively from Germany and then lagers it properly so it is ready to release in September. With all of the expense and fermentation tank space they put into this beer, it should be a lot more expensive than it is. Bell’s and Lakefront also make traditional

Oktoberfest beers, while Abita is releasing one this year as well. A slightly different take on the traditional beer is Autumn Ale from Breckenridge. Created like an Oktoberfest beer, but then fermented with an ale yeast, this beer is a little more fruity and floral than the more traditional beers. Oktoberfest in Germany starts on September 21st this year and runs for 16 days. Fortunately, these beers will be available sooner than that…and last a little longer.

in order to prevent mold and other nasty things from happening while they are stored for future use. Since fresh hop beers use the hops right away, they are still full of wet hop goodness. For that reason, they are sometimes called wet hopped beers. Look for long time favorites, Port Brewing High Tide, Left Hand Warrior, Great Divide Fresh Hop and Bridgeport Hop Harvest to make the rounds soon. Since the hop harvest dates can vary from year to year, the release of the fresh hop beers also varies. Expect to see this year’s

batch a little earlier than usual. Seasonal beers are a powerful lure for both the experienced and novice craft drinker. Most beer bars and package stores have recognized that and carry a variety of these once a year offerings. Stay in touch with your favorite places to see which of these fine beers they will have available and when. In the meantime, enjoy the last of the summer seasonal releases so you can help those retailers make room for the fall beers.

The final fall beer category is fresh hop. Produced with hops freshly picked and placed in the brew kettle within hours of being picked, these beers feature a fresh, sparkly, hop flavor and aroma that is just not present in most beers. Typically, hops are dried right after harvest

Arizona IPA Meets Belgian Wit in SanTan Brewing’s Citrusy Super Hero Style Belgian IPA, SuperMonk, Launching Labor Day

Belgian Monks are known for brewing much of the world’s best craft beer, and now SanTan Brewing Company is delivering a hybrid brew that marries the hoppy magic of a West Coast IPA with the traditional spice and fruitiness of a Belgian Wit beer in this fall seasonal, SuperMonk IPA. 12 oz cans of SuperMonk IPA will be available at valley craft beer retailers from Labor Day through the end of October. SuperMonk IPA is a naturally hazy, Belgian Style IPA with notes of citrus and orange peel dominating the aroma. Upon first sip, hoppy

bitterness dances with peppery clove notes and finishes with a light orange and fruity flavor. SuperMonk IPA is a very drinkable craft beer. It’s light on the palate and ideal for craft beer lovers and hopheads alike. Made with a hybrid “super yeast”, the secret behind SuperMonk is a combination of Proprietary California Ale yeast and a Trappist Ale Yeast Blend with Cascade and loads of Columbus hops. During the fermentation, the Belgian strain came across slightly more dominant and thus the SuperMonk name was born!

SuperMonk IPA Quick Facts Style: Belgian Wit IPA Malt: Pale Malted Barley, White Malted Wheat, Munich Malt, Vienna Malt Hops: Cascade and loads of Columbus Yeast: Proprietary California Ale Yeast/Trappist Ale Yeast Blend OG: 16 Plato (1.065) ABV: 6.5% Color: 5 SRM IBU: 70 IBU SuperMonk IPA pairs well with spicy dishes including curry dishes, sharp aged cheddar, rare prime rib with horseradish and crème brulee for dessert. It is the fourth seasonal brew to don an alumni suit. To find a pint of SuperMonk near you, visit SanTan Brewing Company’s Beer Detective online at www.santanbrewing.com/find-santan-on-tap.

By Alison BailinBatz Wine served up without a splash of snobbery is just the tip of the iceberg for Cave Creek neighborhood wine store, Vino 100. From its start in 2006 to co-founder Laura McCormack’s background, it’s no cheesy wine story. “I wanted to do something different and have more control over my future,” said McCormack, a horticulture graduate who was a sales representative for a wholesale nursery for more than 20 years before opening Vino 100. One visit into a West Valley wine store changed McCormack’s career forever. “I was getting the sense that I wanted to own my own business,” the Phoenix native explained. “Even though I loved wine, a wine

Once it presented itself to me, I knew it was just what I was looking for.” From there, McCormack started researching the type of wine store she wanted to open. “It’s one thing to have a passion for wine and another to make it into a successful business.” She was drawn to Vino 100’s casual, reasonably priced and fun way to buy wines. Like her, many people enjoy wine but find wine bars expensive or intimidating. On the other hand, superstores have an overwhelming quantity of wine, and the quality of wines and service is lacking. “Vino 100 is the wine store for everyone,” McCormack said. Any one of three wine enthusiasts, including McCormack, welcome

McCormack’s favorite reds and whites: Scout’s Honor – McCormack says she likes this Zinfandel blend because it carries her favorite attributes of several varietals in one. Blazon – She likes full-bodied Pinot Noirs like this one. Dreaming Tree Everyday White – This is one of Dave Matthews’ line of wines collaborated with awardwinning winemaker Steve Reeder, but that’s not why she likes it. McCormack nicknamed it the “‘patio pounder,’ because it’s perfect for drinking out on the patio, and it’s gone before you know it.” Naked Chardonnay – Its name is derived from being aged in stainless steel vats instead of oak barrels. “It’s pure with more crispness

and citrus, like what Chardonnay grapes really taste like,” McCormack described. “And I don’t like wine that has been overly fussed with.”

Arizona wines available at Vino 100: Arizona Stronghold Page Springs Cellars There is always a bottle open to taste. You can also create your own wine flight from nine different daily selections. Vino 100 is open Tuesday – Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.; Thursday – Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.; and closed Sundays and Mondays. The store seats about 30 for inhouse tastings and other events, such as corporate gatherings, wine tastings and private parties, in house or off site. The staff is also available for community fundraising events. Additionally, Vino 100 hosts a wine club, a bi-monthly vino and canvas event and wine dinners. And there’s always live music on the weekends. Co-owned by Laura McCormack and Kim Cramton, Vino 100 is located at the Tuscany Village Center, 30835 North Cave Creek Road, just one-half mile north of Tatum Boulevard in Phoenix.

Awards and White Wine at Javelina Leap Vineyard & Winery of wines made by women winemakers.

Deb serves up some great wine and conversation at Oak Creek Vineyards & Winery and, right next door, Javelina Leap Vineyard & Winery is the talk of the town lately with two big announcements! By Kimberly Gunning Arizona wine lovers have plenty of reasons to visit the wonderful vineyards in Cornville. On Page Springs Road, Eric Glomski’s Page Springs Cellars offers spectacular vineyard views and a popular wine-tasting atmosphere,

Owners Rod and Cynthia Snapp are making waves in the wine industry with their award-winning wines. Most notable, Cynthia brought home Gold from this summer’s 2013 International Women’s Wine Competition. Held in Sonoma, 36 professional judges from all over the world came together for a blind tasting

Javelina Leap’s 2012 100% AZ Merlot was awarded a Gold and Best of Class. Additionally, Javelina Leap’s 2011 100% AZ Zinfandel , Javelina Leap’s 2012 100% AZ Tempranillo and Javelina Leap’s 2011 Syrah each took Silver, and Javelina Leap’s 2011 Prospectors Blend was awarded Bronze.

Javelina Leap is working on expanding the winery by adding white wines to their production. The Snapps recently purchased AZWeeklyMagazine.com

a new fork lift and two cold fermentation, white-wine containers of 550-gallon and 450-gallon capacities. A Pinot Grigio is planned to be the couple’s first white-release and will be available spring 2014. It’s safe to assume that if Cynthia’s white wines are as much of a crowd pleaser as her reds, we will be hearing much more about Javelina Leap in the future! Check out the vineyard during Labor Day Weekend, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., for music all weekend long in the Arizona Room. August 21st, 2013 - August 27th, 2013

REVENGE AND HARD KNOCKS WITNESS A WORLD CLASS UFC WEEKEND WITH COX

Arizona’s Own Benson Henderson Set to Defend UFC Lightweight Championship Belt in Sure to be Epic Feud-Filled Battle When Glendale, Arizona’s Benson Henderson puts his UFC lightweight championship belt on the line against Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s Anthony Pettis in the challenger’s hometown Saturday, August 31st, it won’t be the first time these two pugilists have danced a round (or five) in the cage. In a closely contested bout in 2010, Anthony Pettis got the judges nod after five rounds of fighting, where he landed a kick after jumping off of the cage to spring in the air and deliver the final blow in a stunt more suited for a scene in The Matrix than in any sort of real-life athletic affair. However, since the two first met, it’s Henderson’s career that has shined as he’s stormed through

the UFC in dominant fashion to take claim of the belt. Pettis however, has been equally, if not more-so dominant, in his last three fights after dropping a loss to game fighter Clay Guida in his first UFC appearance. But the excitement this weekend doesn’t start and stop with the main event. On a thoroughly impressive undercard, long time dominant heavyweight grapplers go at it as Frank Mir takes on Josh Barnett, and in the featherweight division powerhouse Chad Mendes will take on the most energetic human to walk the earth in before mentioned Clay Guida. Fans of all fighters will be able to watch the preliminary fights for free this Saturday on Fox Sports 1 and can order the Main Card, where Benson Henderson seeks to prove the loss to Pettis was a fluke, through Cox Cable on PayPer-View.

Where You Stand is such a good album that it will challenge 2007’s The Boy With No Name and 1999’s The Man Who as the band’s best yet, and it seems like their five-year hiatus has been a good thing. Fran Healy’s delicate, sometimes cracking falsetto gives tracks like the otherworldly piano pop shuffler “Boxes” a haunted sort of beauty despite its lament about how commerce and the daily grind saps away our lives, while the piano ballad “The Big Screen” details Healy’s rapturous efforts to make every moment count. A lot of the record feels dreamy and organic, as on the the mid-tempo rock track “Moving,” while “Mother” reminds us how skilled they are at making gorgeous piano popl. Where You Stand is a solid release.

If you like your albums filled with any combination of Americana, folk, country, blues and soul then Lee Koch’s latest release, Whole Heart, should be right up your alley. “Journey to Unfold” has an easygoing Americana vibe, while “Sweet Release,” on the other hand, has more of a footstomping, dirty blues sound that will get you dancing in short order. “Trusty Branch” is a solid little romantic ballad that is aided mostly by an acoustic guitar and stretches of whistling, “Being Broke”’s upbeat bluegrass sound will make being penniless sound a lot more appealing than you might think, and you’ll be hard-pressed not to chuckle at “Celebrities” when it highlights how shallow celebrity worship is. Koch is not a household name, but Whole Heart’s variety shows why he might someday become one.
