REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘You’re Next’

‘One Direction: This is Us’ Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock traces boy band One Direction’s meteoric rise to fame - from their humble hometown beginnings and competing on the X-Factor to conquering the world and performing at London’s famed O2 Arena. (NR - 85 minutes)

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

‘Scenic Route’

‘The World’s End’

Josh Duhamel and Dan Fogler play best friends who are on a road trip when their old pickup breaks down, leaving them stranded on an isolated desert road. As the relentless elements of the desert grind them down, they start to attack each other’s life decisions with unwavering brutality. (R - 85 minutes)

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost play childhood friends who, upon reuniting in an attempt to top their epic pub-crawl from 20 years earlier, unwittingly become humankind’s only hope for survival. (R - 109 minutes)

Randy: Both Duhamel and Fogler turn in the best performances of their career in a story that haunts and stays with you for a while. Joseph: Anchored by a razor-sharp screenplay and amplified by two powerhouse performances, “Scenic Route’s” intensity escalates from trivial friction to extreme brutality, eventually landing smack-dab in the center of psychological unbalance.

Stan:The ‘Awesome Threesome’ of director/writer Edgar Wright, actor/writer Simon Pegg, and actor Nick Frost who gave us the hilarious romp ‘Hot Fuzz’ (2007), present a zany ‘Social Science Fiction’ story that’s a non-stop, ‘hang on to your hat’ ride!

8

August 21st, 2013 - August 27th, 2013

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Stan: Rather surprised by director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett’s film in the horror/thriller genre, ‘You’re Next’ delivers the ‘bump scares’ with just the right amount of humor to ease the tension, prompting a sigh of exhilaration at the timely ending. Joseph: “You’re Next” will not only scare the living daylights out of you, but it will also afford you one of the most frighteningly fun times that you will have while watching a movie all year. The endresult is a uniquely engaging experience.

BEST KEANU REEVES MOVIES

BY JAY BOBBIN

“The Matrix”

Considered the most profitable movie in Hollywood history,‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ (2002) had a budget of only $6 mil & revenues of $369 mil, for a whopping 6150 % return on investment.

When a gang of masked, axwielding murderers descends upon a family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped - until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all. (R - 94 minutes)

“The Day the Earth Stood Still” (2008) Reeves’ minimalist acting style works well for his turn as Klaatu, the unemotional alien who has a warning for Earth’s residents, in this update of the sci-fi classic. “Something’s Gotta Give” (2003) A very charming Reeves plays an amorous doctor who romances an older woman (Diane Keaton), a result of his treating a man (Jack Nicholson) who’s been wooing her daughter (Amanda Peet). “The Gift” (2000) Reeves is quite effective in an atypical role as a woman’s (Hilary Swank) abusive, very rough-around-the-edges husband, one of those suspected by a psychic (Cate Blanchett) of being involved in another woman’s disappearance. “The Matrix” (1999) A genuinely iconic Reeves film, this mind-bending sci-fi saga casts him as a computer hacker drawn into an alternate universe where he must fight to save mankind.

By Joseph J. Airdo

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actor Josh Duhamel (‘Scenic Route’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I think that it is a true in life that sometimes if something scares you, then you should do it because usually you are going to be happy that you went through that experience. This was a really scary undertaking because it was such a dense script and so difficult emotionally and physically to get through. And I learned a lot. I am a lot more confident and brave as an actor going forward because I went through something like this. So I learned a lot both from this character and from just the experience of making this movie.” - Josh Duhamel “I knew that it was something that I wanted to do right off the bat. I related to it in a lot of ways. I got to have a Mohawk, which was cool. I never had the chance to have a Mohawk before, so that’s always good. And it was just a challenge for me to show something that I had never had a chance to show before. You always look for that as an actor to try and stretch and show people different sides of what you are capable of. “I think that the lesson here is even though you may have big dreams as a 20-year-old and thought that you were going to go out and set the world on fire but look back and have not necessarily achieved all of the things that you thought you might, sometimes it takes dramatic events like this to realize that you have a lot of blessings in your life and that you should appreciate some of things that you do have.

“To be honest, in reading the script, I never saw it coming. It was not until we actually got on set and we started shooting that insane dinner table scene that unfolds at the beginning of the movie. I was sitting across the table from Joe Swanberg, Ti West, Amy Seimetz and AJ Bowen, just watching them have this unbelievable dialogue floating between them that literally had us all in stitches. “And I turned to Nick Tucci and Wendy Glenn and said, ‘Are we shooting a horror or a comedy because this is funny.’ I did not see it coming. And then I wasn’t sure if it was just like an inside, on-set joke that we all thought was funny or if audiences were actually going to be able to get on board with the humor as well. It was such a new experience for me to see the tonal shift in the film and the way that we can infuse the

elements of horror and comedy and have them both as prominent as one another within the film. “One minute you are really are laughing and then you are really terrified. It is not common that you are laughing with the characters and at the actual situations. More typically, you are kind of laughing at the characters. So I think that we blended that really well and that is full credit to a great screenplay from Simon Barrett but ultimately casting the right people who were able to bring these characters to life and give them that type of humor and personality.” - Sharni Vinson

The Magic of 4 Avenue th

4th Avenue, a magic street of dreams, has undergone numerous evolutions throughout the years beginning with the building of the railroads. The 4th Avenue Business District stretches from University Boulevard on the north end to 9th Street on the south end and serves as a major link between the University of Arizona and downtown Tucson. The Avenue evolved to provide the goods

10

and services for the surrounding residential neighborhoods along with bars and restaurants. In the late 1940s the area gradually changed into a light industrial and commercial district followed by a ghetto type blight. Then in the early 1970s the Avenue was inhabited by maturing “hippies” who opened businesses heavy in the arts & craft scene. Avenue

customers were impressed that these hippies were hard working and pretty good business people. The Avenue began to draw customers from all over the City and from many socio – economic levels. This is when the 4th Avenue Street Fair came into being. The Avenue and its businesses have continued to thrive. The Fourth Avenue Merchants Association (FAMA) was formed to support the economic well being of the area businesses and to promote the arts. A group of volunteers formed the Old Pueblo Trolley to refurbish vintage trolleys and run them between 4th Avenue and the University. FAMA planted trees and flower pots all along the Avenue for beauty and shade. Indeed 4th Avenue has become a magic place. It is magic for the merchant who had a dream and decided to open a business along its tree lined streets. It is magic for its visitors who want a unique shopping and dining experience. It is magic with a plethora of night time entertainment venues. Then there is the magic of people watching while enjoying coffee and a snack at one of the sidewalk cafes. There is something for everyone. Of the 100 businesses in the 4th Avenue Business District, 17 businesses have been on the Avenue over 25 years. Caruso’s Restaurant and The Shanty have been around for over 70 years. 70% of the businesses are women owned. The Avenue is the perfect incubator for new businesses. The 2 annual Street Fairs now rank in the top 100 nationwide. These are popular community events that

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

have been enjoyed by multiple generations. Good food, arts and crafts and entertainment abound. 300,000 visitors are introduced to the Avenue twice a year. The 3 surrounding neighborhoods and 3 service organizations share in 1/2 of the beer sales profits. Numerous other non-profit organizations are afforded an opportunity to promote their charity and causes. The hiring of cleaning personnel, security staff, and supervisors benefits the whole community. The purchase of street fair goods and services pumps money into the local economy. Nearly 60,000 out of town visitors help support Tucson’s hotels and restaurants. With the 4th Avenue Street Fairs as its economic engine, FAMA takes care of sidewalk cleaning, flower planting, tree pruning and trash disposal. FAMA also markets the area with a wide distribution of brochures, TV & radio advertising and monthly sales promotions. Outdoor music venues can be enjoyed on selected weekends. There is always something happening on 4th Avenue. It is the magic street of dreams.

By Chef Jon Wirtis C.E.C. Welcome to Caridad Community Kitchen, a program of the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona where the changing of lives begins, and a piece of the fight against hunger in our community ends. The purpose of our 10-week culinary training program is to prepare those who meet low income requirements, are unemployed or under-employed for careers in the foodservice and hospitality industry.

The program begins with the learning of proper safety and sanitation practices and culminates in a student-prepared Grand Buffet. Chefs Jon Wirtis and Abby Rosen teach and share their knowledge in the development of good knife skills, a good foundation in fundamental cooking skills, basic sauce making, flavor building and a nutritionally balanced meal wherethe students prepare to help themselves and others. This is real culinary world “hands-on” training where the student produce over 14,000 hot meals and sack lunches each
