While blue dog Democrats and Republicans were getting ultra serious with President Obama’s crisis in healthcare, another crisis was brewing over at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre. MIDLIFE! The Crisis Musical! …opened in Mesa this past week. Only this show was a real winner, as the regional première of the Bob and Jim Walton new musical blasted off in hilarious fashion! Leave it to Bob himself to come here to Arizona and direct his comedic masterpiece, poking fun at every angle and bulge in sight. Bob’s direction was crisp and original which brought out the best in this talented cast of mid-lifers. But bring the oxygen, you’ll need it before the nights over, as this new musical comedy gives way to scene after scene and laugh upon laugh with barely a moment to catch a breath! This marathon of comedy is the perfect answer for the maladies of a generation! From singing mammograms and prostrate exams, to biological time bombs and prescription side effects, MIDLIFE! is a musical you’ll love and laugh with all the way to the doctor’s office and back! As the signature song “Welcome to Mid-Life” warns, “you won’t be able to remember squat!” Making this an even more memorable

night are three men and three woman, who play these ‘age old’ conditions and challenges with humor and grace, while granting us a ticket to “laugh and lie” honestly. Leading the way through this comedy crisis for the men are Jeff Duncan, Chuck Caruso and Andy Kopec. These guys were a hoot all night but really showed their colors in “Weekend Warriors”, “Boys Night In”, “Lies” and ‘I Quit”. They made looking great and turning 50 the best adventure any actor could ask for! Right next to them were the hottest and funniest crisis women who reminded us “what we did come here for”-more belly laughs with the girls! With Elizabeth Loos, Francesca Amari and Jennie Hollander Carosiello strutting their stuff, they ladies brought new meaning to Midlife reality and humor in “”Biological Clock”, “He Got What He Deserves”, “A Trip to the Doctor” and “I’m Not Ready”. Even AARP could use a little insight from these ladies of laughs! MIDLIFE is a hit musical comedy everyone will enjoy! Thanks to the Prather family for bringing the regional premiere to our backyard, where we could all use a little laughter these days to lighten our spirits. Now where did I put those darn keys?? MIDLIFE plays through September 26th. For tickets call 480-3256700 or purchase online at BroadwayPalmWest.com

The Spirit of the Saguaro presented by Phoenix Airport Museum Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week Thru Aug. 23, 2009 As photographer Holly Metz puts it, ‘The Spirit of the Saguaro project is a celebration of the amazing beauty and uniqueness of this ancient desert being. It is an expression of the gratitude for the teachings the Saguaro (Hashan) has to offer if I become still, give myself over, and see with whole body and mind. . . . Buddhist and O’othham teachings influence my life, this body of work, and the image titles. . . .’ Each photograph is taken in the Gila River Indian Community (south of Phoenix) within a few miles of her home. ‘I am grateful and humbled to discover that I need to go no further to experience endless wonder, constant change, and profound beauty. It is a continual lesson in embracing opportunity by being available for life in the moment, at any moment…’

Food: Feast for the Eyes presented by ASU Art Museum Tuesday 10am – 9pm Wednesday - Saturday 10am - 5pm Thru Aug. 29, 2009 The ASU Art Museum presents the annual summer exhibition for visitors of all ages and families looking for free fun and educational outings during the hot summer months. For ten years summer family exhibition themes have ranged from, ‘What I Did on My Summer Vacation’ to ‘Out of the Woods,’ with an environmental theme reminding visitors of the importance of renewable resources. This year’s theme of ‘Food’ will be a feast for the eyes, food for thought and tastefully exhibited. Hands-on art activities in the gallery emphasize the ideas found in the exhibition and the Changing Hands Reading area provides books on related themes and comfortable chairs in which to curl up and read. Rent presented by Nearly Naked Theatre Phoenix Little Theatre Thursday – Saturday 8pm• Sundays at 6pm or 2pm alternating until Saturday, September 12th. Through Sept. 12, 2009 This incredible show follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York’s East Village. Ravaged by the physical and emotional complications of AIDS and struggling against the soul-destroying apathy and “emotional disconnection” of many of America’s youth, these friends tether to each other as they painfully learn Rent’s inescapable and beautiful lessons; Love is the only thing worth living for…and live life to its fullest….everyday. RENT is the 7th longest-running show in Broadway history and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1996. It is the only musical in the past 20 years to do so. The shocking death of RENT’s author/composer Jonathan Larson before the show opened off-Broadway created an emotional trigger to RENT that has touched millions of people.

Writer/director Quentin Tarantino has developed a huge cult following that has crossed over to the mainstream moviegoer since gaining notoriety for his unusual style of movie making for “Reservoir Dogs” (1992). The immensely popular “Pulp Fiction” (1994) followed which made his name, along with stars John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, household words. With “Kill Bill” volumes 1 and 2 (2003 & 2004), Quentin Tarantino merged the “serials of old” style of filmmaking with the technology of today and brought the “chapters” style of old to his films as bridges between sequences along with songs and music to personify the era. The style of “Grindhouse” (2007) was a reminder for us boomers of the theatres of old where the now called ‘discount’ movie houses ran double features and the prints were scratched, some with missing scenes! “Grindhouse” presented two 90-minute stories with an intermission like the movie theatres of old. In his latest, “Inglourious Basterds”, the ‘chapters’ technique is used as segues between two separate stories, happening simultaneously, that are heading toward the climax, in a cinema in France. Story one: In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Basterds” are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. Their leader, the infamous terror to the Nazis, Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt)! Their plan, blowup

FEATURING D-BOX Motion Code™ Theater Seat Technology

Story two: A French-Jewish girl (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the killing of her entire family, makes her escape to Paris where she settles into running a movie theater. She, along with her projectionist/lover, conceives a plan to blow up the theatre when the première is moved to the theatre she manages! Quentin Tarantino has firm directorial control of the story; the actors’ performances are over the top, yet subtle in their character nuances, and although the movie’s runtime of 153 minutes might seem long, “Inglourious Basterds” moves along with the right touches of comedic events! Starring Brad Pitt, Mélanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Eli

The Goods: Crazy Name, Funny Film By Randy Montgomery Temecula, California; a suburb of Los Angeles out in the Inland Empire. In Temecula lies Selleck Motors, a family owned dealership struggling to move vehicles. Threatened with closure form the bank, the owner (James Brolin) calls on the one man who can get the inventory out the door, Don Ready (played by Jeremy Piven). Ready and his team of “guns for hire” travel the country assisting ailing dealerships move cars through high-pressure tactics, sneaky tricks, creative marketing, flashy inflatable balloons and scantily clad greeters. Ready and team is in Flagstaff, Arizona when the call comes out. Still healing from an unexplained incident

in the ‘querque (that’s Albuquerque), the group decides to accept the challenge and heads west. The gang hits Temecula with a bang and promises to sell every last automobile before the weekend is over to stop the bank from taking possession. They also vow to prevent a sleazy import dealership owner (Alan Thicke) from buying the property so his middleaged son (Ed Helms) and his “man” band can perform in the empty space. The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard delivers more true laughs than any other film this summer, including The Hangover, which share many of the same cast members. The humor, while crude, racist and downright offensive never fails to entertain or incite a laugh out loud moment. Piven couldn’t be more perfectly cast, and his screenmates, David Koechner, Kathryn Hahn and Ving Rhames help make the movie.

Spend Time With Adam By Randy Montgomery

You will want to spend time with Adam before the summer comes to a close. He’s arriving in your local theatre close to the end of the blockbuster season, and this Fox Searchlight release will be far from a box office biggie, but what is does deliver is a heartwarming romance and characters that you truly care about. In fact, Adam is by far the best film I have seen so far this year, and Hugh Dancy turns in the most powerful performance since the beginning of 2009, with his co-star Rose Byrne coming in a close second. Writer/ director Max Mayer won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at Sundance and was nominated at the same festival for the Grand Jury Prize. What makes this character study so unique, is that the main character has

About Online Trading Academy…

Fernando Gonzalez - Respected trader, author, and newsletter writer

In 1997, The Online Trading Academy built one of the largest trading floors in the country. Within 6 months, OTA had 180 traders transacting about 500 million dollars in trades per day. It was evident that OTA had to develop an educational curriculum that was very unique and that would truly help the success of all the traders, beginners and experienced alike.

Kevin Green - Recently headed up Cyber Trader’s educational needs

Considering that many of these traders were trading with Online Trading Academy capital, it caused OTA to seek a team of some of the best traders in the country to help in the development of these unique strategies. They were instrumental in making the trading floor the single largest electronic trading floor West of the Mississippi. Many have made their mark in our industry:

William Rhee - Over a decade in trading and author

Are You Ready For The Next Downturn?

David Janti - Active trader and teacher Toni Turner - Eminent speaker, active trader, author of several trading books Sean Kim - Now a Market Maker Merlin Rothfeld - Taught trading in Europe and was a Professor of Economics at the University of Ancona (and who has now returned to OTA as an instructor) Mike Mc Mahon – OTA’s Director of Education, whose varied financial past has brought multiple facets to our educational processes and many others whose contributions are the foundation of the finest trader education program in the industry.

Healthy Dining Habits

prepared salads like potato salad. Don’t salt your salad. Breads. If you don’t want to skip the bread course entirely, ask for wholegrain bread, rolls or breadsticks. Try to stick to just one piece. Muffins, garlic toast and croissants generally have more calories and fat, and crackers can be high in both salt and fat.

Excess fat, salt and oversized portions when dining out can sabotage your diet in no time. Here are a few quick tips, from appetizers to desserts, to get around those never-ending obstacles. Moderation and sensibility are keys to success with any diet. Here’s how to dine out while remaining true to your goals. With these tips in mind, you can even eat at fast-food restaurants without derailing your diet.

1. Cut back on saturated fat and cholesterol You can cut back on the bad fats while maintaining taste, variety and even enjoyment. Here are a few simple ways to cut down on saturated fats when you’re dining out: Ask that your food be prepared with olive oil, rather than butter or fat. Request low-fat salad dressing, on the side. Skip the bread and rolls — or at least skip the butter. Trim visible fat off meat and poultry. Eat only a portion that’s about the size of a deck of cards, since even very lean meat and poultry still contain fat.

2. Be on the lookout for hidden salt Cutting back on salt will help control your blood pressure. Because salt often enhances flavor, it’s often used a lot in restaurants. Ask that your food be prepared without added salt, MSG or saltcontaining ingredients. Be alert for ingredients, cooking styles and labels that indicate a dish may be high in salt, such as pickled, cured, smoked, soy sauce and broth. Remove the saltshaker from your table, or at least, put it out of easy reach. Limit condiments such as mustard, ketchup, pickles and sauces that are high in salt. Opt for fruits and vegetables instead of salty appetizers or snack foods.

3. Avoid oversized servings If you’ve eaten in restaurants in recent years, you know that servings are often heaping, especially pasta dishes. To avoid overeating: Select foods prepared with healthier cooking techniques, such as steaming, grilling, broiling, baking, roasting, poaching or stirfrying.

August 20th - August 26th, 2009

Remember that you don’t have to clean your plate. Ask for the lunch size, even if you’re eating dinner. AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

Substitute an appetizer for an entree. Split a meal with a companion. Put half the meal in a takeout container before you start eating.

As you weigh your options, from drinks to desserts, keep these tips in mind: Drinks. Choose water, club soda, diet soda, fruit juice, tea and coffee. If you want an alcoholic beverage, stick to moderation. That means, in general, one drink a day for women, two a day for men. Avoid tomato juice, unless it’s low in sodium. Appetizers. Choose appetizers with vegetables, fruits or fish, such as chopped, raw vegetables, fresh-fruit compote or shrimp cocktail with lemon juice instead of high-sodium cocktail sauce. Skip fried and breaded appetizers. Soups. You’re often better off avoiding soup and choosing fruit or salad. Broth- or tomato-based soups are often high in salt. Chowders, creamed or pureed soups, as well as some fruit soups, may contain more fat. Before ordering soup, ask how it’s prepared. Salads. Order fruit salad, tossed greens or spinach salad. Avoid cheese, eggs or meats as salad toppings. Ask for dressing on the side, limit yourself to one spoonful and stick to low-fat varieties. Ask what varieties of vinegar and olive oil are available. Avoid bacon bits and

Entrees. Choose a baked, broiled, grilled, poached, roasted or steamed entree. Ask that dishes be prepared without extra salt, butter or oil. Meats and vegetables sauteed or stirfried in a small amount of oil, broth or water are usually lower in fat. Side dishes. Choose vegetables and fruit. Baked potatoes, boiled new potatoes and rice also may be good options. Skip the french fries, potato chips and onion rings, as well as vegetables slathered in cheese or cream sauces. Ask that the chef prepare your side without butter, margarine or salt. Top your potatoes with salsa instead of butter or sour cream. Most restaurants will substitute a healthier side dish if you ask. Condiments. Choose fresh tomato, cucumber and lettuce for sandwiches. Avoid olives, pickles and sauerkraut because of their high salt content. Use ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise sparingly, and use pepper or lemon juice in place of salt.

Desserts. Wait before ordering dessert to let the main course settle. It takes a while for a feeling of fullness to register in your brain. If you can’t resist dessert, though, choose fresh fruit, gelatin, sorbet, sherbet, fruit ice, meringues or plain cake with fruit puree.

Cigars are bigger, better, more plentiful and less expensive than ever……

When the cigar ‘boom’ hit in the mid 1990’s, cigar manufacturers were not ready to handle all of the new demands. In the early 1990’s, there were only one million cigar smokers in the United States. By the end of the decade, there were over six million. Today, the number is probably half of that, however the people smoking today are enjoying their cigars now more than ever! Cigar manufacturers could not handle the demand for cigars during the ‘boom.’ The result? Cigars that hit tobacconist’s shelves were NOT properly aged and were EXTREMELY OVERPRICED. I can remember paying over twenty dollars back then for a cigar that I can buy

Today’s cigar smokers want larger ring gauge cigars that are more fuller-bodied smokes. A larger ring gauge cigar is thicker in diameter. The thicker cigar gives the roller the ability to add more tobacco’s in the cigar (called filler leaves) that give the cigar varying and more complex flavors. Today’s cigar smokers also want cigars that are more fuller in body (or taste). The last noticeable trend for today’s cigar smokers is that they prefer a shorter cigar that consumes up less time for them to smoke it. A smaller cigar does not mean at all that it has less taste. It only takes a shorter period of time to smoke it! At Scottsdale Cigar Club we offer

cigars from every manufacturer you can think of. There are a few standouts that match the trends I write about above. A fabulous Honduran Cigar is a Gran Habano that comes in 4 and 5 inch versions and sells for less than $5. The Casa Magna Robusto, the highest rated cigar for 2008 by Cigar Aficionado, retails at $5.15. A La Gloria Cubana Serie R #5 is another great cigar retailing for about $6. One of the reasons I enjoy cigars so much, as most of you do, is that I have the chance to smoke many different cigars of varying size, taste and price. I typically have a dozen or so different cigars in my humidor to mach all the tastes and moods I have to match up with a cigar of choice. So sit back, grab your favorite beverage, turn on your favorite game and light up your cigar…………. Long Ashes, Brad Berko Brad@scottsdalecigarclub.com

today for $4 to $5! Case in point: at my cigar store, Scottsdale Cigar Club (www.scottsdalecigarclub. com) we offer the best rated cigar by Cigar Aficionado Magazine in all 2008 for only $5.15! This just goes to show you that a higher priced cigar doesn’t always equate to a better cigar!

Your Body is Your Temple

(Saturday Night Included) Pre-party Planning and what to eat before ‘All Systems Go!’ The weekend has arrived - and you’re more than ready to make it a good one. Pay Heed, a few words to the wise before flipping and flopping off the temple rafters. BEFORE YOU DRINK Eat: Eat something that has vitamin B and C such as fruit. If you are going to an after hour party, you should eat an early dinner before you go to the party or eat while you drink. The fructose in foods will help absorb alcohol. Vitamins B & C: Take vitamins B & C. Alcohol will deplete nutrients from your body and the vitamins will help you replace what you lose from your body by drinking. Drinking orange juice, grapefruit juice, and grape juice will also help.

MEGA CLUB OF THE WEEK ZOUK, SINGAPORE “Zouk” (zook) -noun -origin: French Creole for “party” 1. a style of dance music that originated in Guadeloupe and Martinique, featuring Caribbean rhythms over a disco beat and played with electric guitars and synthesizers 2. one of the top clubs in Singapore and on the globe. How big is Zouk? It was the first night club in Singapore to play House music, and today is all the rage with the nation’s clubbing crowd.

20

Drink Milk: Milk will help absorb alcohol slowly. Know Your Body If you know “the hangover” well, learn from your experience. Were you drinking dark liquor? Were you drinking different types of liquor all night? Were you drinking too fast? Try to analyze what your body can handle. Dark liquors (or colourless liquors) make some people feel sick. Some say drinking different types of liquors or liqueurs bring them headaches. However what you drink doesn’t matter as much as how much you drink. WHILE YOU DRINK Drink Water: always order a cup of water when ordering an alcohol beverage. Water will help rehydrate your system. The more water you drink, the better solution after the night. Eat while you drink: Try to eat while you drink if possible. Food will not only help absorb alcohol slowly, but

Zouk actually isn’t a club; it’s three interconnected clubs: Zouk, Phuture, and Velvet Underground – you can get an idea of what these three spaces are like, both visually and musically, by their names. Phuture is futuristic and plays broken beats, Velvet Underground has exquisite velvet-covered walls and plays laid-back house and soul, and Zouk, the main dancing stage, plays a blend of everything. Want more proof of Zouk’s commitment to being the best in Southeast Asia? It makes a point of sending its DJs to Europe and the US on a regular basis for “re-orientation,” and to acquire new music. Next time you plan a trip to Singapore, don’t leave until you’ve experienced Zouk.

August 20th - August 26th, 2009 AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

also slow your drinking pitch down. Order fruit cocktails: Fresh fruit juice will replace the vitamins that you lose from your body while drinking. If you know that you are not a big drinker, try cocktails with simple ingredients such as Rum and Orange Juice or Vodka and Cranberry Juice etc. Watch Your Pace: Never drink too fast. Drink as slow as possible. When you start to feel “good”, you should stop drinking alcohol and start drinking water. If the party goes longer than you expected, order some fruit juice. AFTERWARDS Drink Water: before going to bed. Do not drink coffee. Coffee will help dehydration. Vitamins B & C: Take some vitamins before going to bed.

Sleep: sleeping may be difficult because your body temperature is higher than usual. If you can’t go to sleep, drink more water. If you need to throw up, throw up. When you wake up, drink more water and eat some fruits and try to go back to sleep. Despite all the things that you could do to avoid a hangover before you drink and as you drink, if you still get a hangover, you are not trying enough. Think about what went wrong and learn from your experience. And remember, drinking is supposed to be fun!! … NOT a time to watch your temple fall.

The Night Owl If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE We’re cool like that, cool like that. Cool like that, cool like that. Yeah, you know it’s us and we’re back at you with some more of the Valley’s happenings. Everything from beer pong to a chocolate class because that is HOW WE ROLL. I know you Tweet too, so follow us @bdiggs and @myFEmy. Beer Pong: In my prime, I was considered one of the greatest dual sport phenoms; drinking sports that is—and Beer Pong and Flippy Cup specifically. Yes, with perfect form and stunning grace I can bounce a ping pong ball into a cup of warm beer and can chug beers and flip a plastic cup over with the amazing accuracy and speed, but the glory days are long behind me. However, one event is tempting me to come out of retirement; an event so big that I may have to clear off the kitchen table and set up a beer pong practice center. It is a huge beer pong satellite tournament on August 29th at Whiskey River Saloon (whiskeyriversaloon.com). The winner of the tournament gets a trip to the world series of beer pong and a chance to win $50,000. Hmmm, I think I can maybe do it, seriously. The entry fee is $30 online and $40 the day of the tournament. Are you going to pong? For more info on the tournament or to sign up visit fasttimesentertainment.com. Geisha’s Treat: Once in a blue moon the Foodie Adventist’s and the Foodie Conservative’s taste buds agree on the same thing. I think Geisha A Go Go might have satisfied both pallets with its original Rice Crispy Treat Roll. Geisha Chef Andrew Nam combines Eastern and Western influences, in fun and traditional dessert. Geisha’s Rice Crispy Treat Roll marries sticky and sweet rice crispy treat with cool and comforting Cookies ‘n Cream ice cream, and has rolled both of them together, creating a fitting summer time treat. Just like traditional rolls, this one comes with its own dipping sauce, chocolate or caramel. To see what else is on the menu at Geisha A Go Go visit, www.geishaagogo.com.

Phoenix Fish Market Closes: It’s always sad when a local institution is no more, and recently we’ve seen many our favorite haunts disappear, but the announcement of the closing of the Phoenix location of The Fish Market actually has a silver lining. The Fish Market, which opened in 1986, is closing to be reopened as the first Bluewater Grill, a popular Southern Californian restaurant chain. Keeping the restaurant “all-in-the-family” Bluewater Grill co-founder Richard Staunton

is the son-in-law of the late Fred Duckett, the co-founder of The Fish Market restaurant chain. Additionally, Phoenix resident Larry Macias will serve as managing partner, and all Fish Market employees will be kept on for Bluewater Grill. The Fish Market will close its doors September 28, and will under go an extensive remodel to transform the space into a “high style meets the beach” design, and is set to reopen as Bluewater Grill the week of October 5, 2009. Here’s what Phoenix dining aficionados can look forward to from the new restaurant, it prints its lunch and dinner menus fresh daily so the menu will always appear new, it offers a shellfish bar, full bar, wine list and a kids menu, and entrees ranging from $10 to $25, and appetizers and soups from $5 to $15. As sad as we are to see the Phoenix Fish Market go, were happy to welcome Bluewater Grill. www.bluewatergrill.com Chocolate and Wine: Chocolate and Wine? I’m in. Avalon, a chic restaurant in Scottsdale, is hosting a chocolate class with wine pairing on Friday, August 21, 2009 at 8:30PM with Executive Chef Travis Watson. At the class, you’ll learn how to make, mold and temper chocolate. The class is only $23 per person (plus tax and gratuity), and it includes the instruction plus a three-course tasting. Sounds like something fun and different and would make for a great date (don’t say I don’t look out for you fellas!) To make your reservation call (602) 656-0010, and visit Avalon-scottsdale.com for more info on the restaurant. Little Feat: You want to know a concert you shouldn’t miss? Little Feat at Martini Ranch on October 18th. Who? Little Feat. They are an amazing live band with an eclectic sound. Considering they are playing such a tiny place, the show WILL be can’t miss, of that I have zero doubt. They play a fusion of California rock and Dixie-inflected funkboogie with touches of folk, blues, rockabilly, country and jazz, which gives them a sound all their own. They are so good and fun that Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Beck, Brian Wilson, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Plant, John Lee Hooker and others have collaborated with them. Tickets are already on sale (they went on sale Monday) so hurry up and grab some at Live Nation purchase points. For more info on the band visit littlefeat.net. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

In the novel Casino Royale, Bond’s recipe is specified in more detail as made with three measures of gin (Gordon’s was Bond’s preference), one measure of vodka (Russian or Polish is preferred), and half a measure of Kina Lillet aperitif, shaken until ice-cold, and with a large, thin slice of lemon peel for garnish (properly called a “Vesper” after his love interest in the book). By the second Bond novel, Love and Let Die, Bond was drinking vodka martinis, a trend that continued when 007 moved to the screen in 1962. AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

The Best Sports Terms and Nicknames of AllTime

“Phi Slamma Jamma” University of Houston men’s basketball teams of 1982-’83 and ‘83-’84. While most look back at college, these guys looked down.

(If not All-Time…a lot of the time.)

“Steel Curtain” No team or unit name ever reflected the city it played in like “The Steel Curtain.” The name represented harddriving players and spoke volumes for the city of Pittsburgh. Our favorite team was more of a “Fabric Softener” back then.

“The Great One,” Wayne Gretzky Says it all. We could say plenty more…like points and assists and goals and rings and records and….. Ok we’ll stop.

FASCINATING FACTS

“Purple People Eaters” Minnesota Vikings’ defensive line of the 1970s. Not sure exactly how many people were eaten, but a lot of football games were won.

“The Immaculate Reception” Terry Bradshaw’s desperation pass deflected off Raiders safety Jack Tatum and then hit Steelers receiver Frenchy Fuqua before Franco Harris grabbed it and headed for the winning touchdown as time expired in Pittsburgh’s 1972 AFC divisional playoff victory. If not immaculate, it was very entertaining and quite unbelievable with very few flaws if any at all.

“Charlie Hustle,” Pete Rose Anyone who sprints down the first base line after drawing a base on balls deserves a nickname like Charlie Hustle. Either that or a straight jacket. “The Chicoutimi Cucumber,” Georges Vezina Pays respects to his hometown in Quebec and shows how calm and cool he was in the net. We’re in agreement it’s better than “Cool” Georges. “Hands of Stone,” Roberto Duran Small, fearless (at least, until the Leornard fight), he hit like a ton of bricks. He cemented his name in boxing history and his fists in many mean mugs.

Earvin “Magic” Johnson Clever, elegant, descriptive, respectful. Rabbits and Hats are plenty jealous of what Magic did with a ball. “The Thrilla in Manila” This Ali-Frazier classic gets a slight nod over another favorite nickname for a boxing match, “The Rumble in the Jungle.” Both were mega-fights that changed the course of boxing forever. Maybe not “the best” sports nickname of all time, but….. “IT’S THE GREATEST!” “THE GREATEST I SAID!!”

A face-off in hockey was originally called a “puck-off.”

Michael “Air” Jordan One of the few who outplayed his own great nickname. Earth, wind or fire wouldn’t have done MJ full justice either. Michael’s just the man. Wait, he’s more than just the man…..

“CuJo,” Curtis Joseph A Hockey Goalie Great. It’s almost getting to the point where you don’t even call him “Curtis Joseph” anymore. I mean, forget it we’re done. “Sweetness,” Walter Payton The rarest of combinations: great player, wonderful man. However, you wouldn’t want to be in his way on

STATIC-X MARKS THEIR SPOT

Calling Los Angeles quartet Static-X the Terminator of contemporary rock music may seem obvious: The band’s blunt-force-trauma melding of industrial rock, thrash metal, and futuristic disco is nothing if not cybernetic. But when you look back at Static-X’s 14-year legacy,

the comparison goes beyond the musical: Static-X have weathered musical trends, survived lineup shifts, and even severed long-time creative partnerships to emerge as a streamlined metallic machine. Static-X is getting ready to release their first-ever full-length live concert CD/DVD, Cannibal Killers Live, due from Reprise Records on October

August 20th - August 26th, 2009 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Cannibal, the band’s latest studio album, was released April 3, 2007, and debuted at No. 36 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart, selling more than 30,000 its first week out and solidifying the band’s place as one of the metal’s pre-eminent artists. The album has gone on to sell more than 160,000 copies. Static-X first burst onto the metal scene in 1999 with their platinum-certified Warner Bros. debut, Wisconsin Death Trip, followed by the gold-certified Machine in 2001. From 2005’s Start a War onward, the quartet have grown tighter, busier,

and more road-ready than ever. “Our touring just gets stronger every year,” frontman Wayne Static says, “and our fans know we’re always going to deliver.” Static-X garnered rave reviews for their appearances on the main stage at Ozzfest 2007. The Los Angeles Times praised them for pumping out “a tight, ultra-loud set of rhythmobsessed ‘evil disco’.” The Seattle Post-Intelligencer noted that their “straight-up sonic brutality through feverish riffs and rhythmic bombasts cast shrapnel-like grenades into the audience,” while the O.C. Register raved: “Static-X found its groove early on, amping up the crowd with its brand of hyperactive dissonance.” Static-X, which is Wayne Static (vocals, guitar, programming), Tony Campos (bass, backing vocals), Koichi Fukuda (lead guitar, keyboards, programming) and Nick Oshiro (drums) will go into the studio this fall to work on their next studio album, to be released in early 2009.

(Wednesday, September 2nd Mesa Amphitheatre) This summer just got a whole lot hotter, harder, faster and louder. The “PEDAL TO THE METAL” TOUR 2009, featuring MUDVAYNE and BLACK LABEL SOCIETY is headed this way. Joining the two metal juggernauts on the road will be STATIC-X, SUICIDE SILENCE, DOPE, BURY YOUR DEAD, and the extremely twisted HELLZAPOPPIN sideshow review, performing during set changes throughout the evening. Pre-sale tickets are available to all of the bands’ fan club members at www.pedaltothemetaltour.com; with general public already on sale. “The tour started as a summer tour with us and Black Label Society, but

as we started fleshing out ideas, it transformed into this really cool concept,” says Mudvayne frontman Chad Gray. The final result is the inaugural run of THE PEDAL TO THE METAL TOUR, a road ready and battle-proven assemblage of hard rock and heavy metal bands guaranteed to raise temperatures and melt asphalt over the summer months. “We’re really excited, because this package is a merging of great bands, good people and amazing fans. It’ll be great to bring them all together.” Mudvayne is one of the most creative and distinctive bands in the aggressive music world - and one of the only acts in heavy music to hold the distinction of seeing every one of their five studio albums attain at least gold certification by the RIAA. Not bad for a band that never cared about following trends or playing to the masses. Naked Dave’s Local Distortion

34

The Naked Truth: If you decided this was the weekend you were staying home, you missed out! BIG! This was one hell of a great weekend for the local music scene. First off, let’s not forget SoulFly was here. After last Friday’s dreadful attempt to do “Something Different,” I was a bit jaded about trying something new again this week. If you read last week’s article, I quoted Kevin Costner from “Field of Dreams” in which he said “There comes a time when all the cosmic tumblers have clicked into place and the universe opens itself up for a few seconds to show you what is possible,” and Friday night the universe opened and showed us Metal Elvis.

Not to sound to cliché however, OH MY GOD! These cats totally KICK ASS! Metal Elvis, was the exceptional blend of 80’s metal and Elvis songs. The King would be proud! They mix tunes from Guns N Roses, August 20th - August 26th, 2009 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Van Halen, Motley Crue, Black Sabbath, Ratt, and Led Zeppelin, with old fashion Elvis songs. Having never seen them I didn’t know what to expect, I am now a huge fan. Metal Elvis is absolutely brilliant, the crowd (and I) loved them. There is something in the show for everyone, from Grandma to the youngster’s.

Metal Elvis and his kick ass pals “Slush” (guitar), “Stikki Lixx” (Bass), and “Kattman Kelly” (Drums), will be embarking on a national tour in about six months. All Metal, all the Time! LONG LIVE THE KING!

And as if that wasn’t enough, LA Guns (the Phil version) played at Club Red on Saturday the 15th. Now, I know there is a lot of crap going around about LA Guns (Phil verses Tracii) and which

LA Guns put on an extraordinary show, as well as staying afterwards to sign autographs, and takes photos with their fans. Opening up for LA Guns was, my band “Naked Dave and the Hollywood Saints”, Suicide Circus, and Bomber. If you’re a Suicide Circus fan, they will be opening up for George Lynch’s “Souls of We” in Hollywood at the Knitting Factory. Be sure to check that out.

Not to forget Bomber, local bros out of Phoenix. Bomber formerly the band “MANTRA” was formed in Phoenix, Arizona USA in October of 2006. The high energy Hard Rock sound is sometimes compared to early Metallica and Alice in chains mixed with the new rock sounds of Bullet for my valentine, Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold. Without a doubt, Bomber clearly has

originality all of its own and have been getting a huge underground buzz from their exciting high energy shows! Superblinded the title track was picked by the Phoenix Coyotes as there official introduction song at every home game in the 2008/2009 season. Bomber than played the song live in Jobing.Com Arena for the first home opening game for the Coyotes with over 10,000 people in attendance. Bomber consists of: • Vocalist and guitarist- Jeff McGraw a.k.a. “Quick” • Guitarist- Frank Fiorenza a.k.a. “Rizzo” • Drummer- Sajym Bickert a.k.a. “Muppet” • Bassist- Robbie Hyde a.k.a. “Mr. Hyde” Bomber brings remarkable musicianship to their music and outstanding drive that you won’t find in all bands. Bomber was conceived by four friends from different parts of the United States coming together to create one of the top drawing acts in Arizona and California. Bomber is going to be unstoppable as a hard working rock band with never ending creative force and drive to make their vision become a reality. Bomber has opened for many national acts including Bullet for my valentine, NonPoint, The Exies, Dokken, and Avenged Sevenfold, Voi Vod, L.A. Guns, Crossfade, Hoobastank and more.

version is better. Putting that all aside, I thought LA Guns was outstanding. With Kenny Kweens of Beautiful Creatures standing in on bass, these guys showed us that they still know how to rip the roof off, and rock it hard! Phil Lewis’s voice is still pure gold. Van Halen’s “5150” is named after Eddie’s Peavey 5150 amp, which is built exclusively for him. If “The Dark Side Of The Moon” is played at the precise moment the MGM lion roars for the second time in the movie “The Wizard Of Oz”, the cd is perfectly sinchronized with the movie. It has been tested and proven thousands of times and seems as if it had been done on purpose. Elvis liked being overly generous. He once drove by a man who was repairing his fence (which was constantly broken by fans), on his shiny brand new truck. The man looked at him admiringly and said “I wish I could have a truck like yours! It is my dream”, to which Elvis replied “Do you have a buck?” “Yeah sure” the man gave him a buck. “Here. The truck is yours”. Def Leppard’s drummer, Rick Allen, lost an arm in a car crash in the mideighties. However, Rick decided to keep on playing, and learned to do it with his feet and some programmed drum lines. The band continued as normal, and their next album with their “new” drummer was “Pyromania”.

SASSY SISTERS UNITE FOR A VERY CLASSY CAUSE

Sassy Sisterhood Shoe Event at Cave Creek Coffee Company Cave Creek Coffee Company brings the underground Sassy Sisterhood women’s society to life this month, debuting the latest in eco-friendly fashion design, gemstone creations, candles, hair/makeup and more, all made from natural resources, every Wednesday evening. On August 26th famed architect and designer, Bryan Taglia will showcase the hottest styles in women’s footwear by “Dress up Shoe.” The Dress up Shoe line is ecofriendly and encourages women to purchase a “staple” shoe design and accessorize by adding pendants, heel straps and dress up clips to modify the style and create several different looks rather than purchasing a multitude of different shoes. Dress up Shoe encourages consumers to save the universe by reducing the consumption of global natural resources by 80% in the footwear & fashion industries. By reengineering the way shoppers think about product, Dress up Shoe

redirects financial patterns from materialism into humanitarianism. Guests are invited to sip on specialty priced cocktails including the Ruby Red Slipper martini, summer mojitos, and $4.00 chardonnay and merlot by the glass by Little Black Dress. Guests/members will also receive a FREE “girlie” gift to coincide with the week’s featured artist/designer including nail polish, lip gloss, and bath products, among others. The cost is free, don’t miss out! Wednesday, August 26, 2009 from

LEAVE HOME WITH DAMP HAIR IN STYLE! So your hair is still wet and you’re on the run. Ditch the worry, as damp hair “in a hurry” has never been easier. If your hair is wet, run styling lotion or gel throughout. Spritz hair spray onto a brush and brush hair back, letting the sides curve down. Finish with more spray. Never go to bed with wet hair! Never…No way, no how!! So, in the always fun ‘tips and tricks’ department…what do mouthwash, fabric softener and wine have to do with hair? Quite plenty actually. They’re unconventional hair treatments that are fast, fun and really do work!

40

FABRIC SOFTENER RED WINE Neutralize the green color caused by chlorine by dabbing a little red wine onto the hair. Use it as a precaution before entering the pool. Also, use before shampooing. Then make a toast to a problem solved!

August 20th - August 26th, 2009 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

MOUTHWASH Mix ¼ cup mouthwash with 1 cup water. Apply to scalp as a cleanser. Use after shampooing and DO NOT rinse out. Whaalaa! Believe it or not, you’re good to go. Kissable, minty fresh hair!

The best leave-in conditioner is none other than laundry room fabric softener. It’s very strong, so be sure to dilute it. Use 1 cup of water and ½ cup fabric softener. Experiment with different softener scents for your own personal hair “signature.” Not to mention saving big bucks over expensive hair products… now that’s a soft and cozy feeling for sure!
