THE TAFETTAS A MEDLEY OF PURE FUN! At Arizona Broadway Theatre By Nicholas Connell Gather up your bubble gum, fill your Chevy Convertible full of gas and drive straight to the Arizona Broadway Theatre for their second summer production of THE TAFETTAS! If you’ve had a chance to see their amazing production of FOREVER PLAID which just opened, then you’ll love the pure fun and medley of music Director Kurtis Overby has crafted live on stage at the ABT. This is the stuff dreams are made of and these Tafetta sisters have hit a high note only matched by the boys of Forever Plaid! This is the story of four sisters from Muncie, Indiana who are about to hit the big time as they make their debut on national television during the heyday of the 1950’s girl groups. Ed Sullivan is standing by in the wings to take them to the next level if their good enough. Not only are they good enough, their great! This medley of hits from the 50’s is better than any idol show could ever be-and it’s live and intimate as a Barbara Walters interview! You’ll need an applause meter to keep up with the positive and funny antics these cute and bubbly sisters have to share. But this show is about the music and these sisters can sing. With Donna, Peggy, Kaye and Cheryl, it’s hard to pick a favorite Tafetta. You’ll just love em all! Starring Shayla Benoit as Donna, Jeannie Shubitz as Peggy, Laura Berger as Kaye and Katrina Hagofsky as Cheryl, this

dynamic quartet scorched the hit parade with song after song of perfect harmony and emotion! If you want hits, then this show is loaded with some of the best love songs and musical numbers ever written. Starting with ‘Sh-Boom”, “Love is a Two Way Street”, “ Mr. Sandman”, and “Tonight You Belong to Me”, to the Hurt Medley with “I’m Sorry”, “Ricochet”, ‘I Cried”, “Cry”, and “Smile”, this was a “special state of love” all night and the audience loved it dearly! There was also the Music Medley with “I Wonder Why”, “L-O-V-E”, “M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-US-E”, “Puppy Love”, and ‘How Much is That Doggie in the Window”.

But maybe the heartbreak really didn’t set in for this loving audience until the Boys Medley crashed the party. With the pedal on full throttle, the Taffeta sisters put the icing on a perfect musical cake with, “Johnny Angel’, “Mister Lee”, “Dedicated to the One I Love”, “Where the Boys Are”, and “I’ll Think of You.” Backing up this beautiful quartet of singers and keeping the beats to perfection were cousin Billy Moore on piano, Dan Stotz on Bass and Thom Lynch on drums. THE TAFEETAS is a warm and loving musical affair I would highly recommend. Go see what may have been the best girl group ever to walk the stages of American television. Earlier this year, horror fans were treated to a 3-D experience unlike no other, My Bloody Valentine 3-D. While the film was not the greatest ever released in the genre, it sure was fun to be right there, in the third dimension with the psychopathic killer. For moviegoers that need a true-to-life near death experience while watching a thriller should be rushing to the theatres to see The Final Destination, the fourth in a series of horror films where those that escaped a fatal accident are haunted with the threat of something else morbidly gruesome happening to them. This is the fourth in the series of popular films. Each has become a little less exciting than the previous, but the 3-D element should add something new to the experience.

It’s Time for Halloween II Again By Randy Montgomery

The first installment of Rob Zombie’s remake of the popular Halloween series was truly repulsive, vile and obscene. Taking creative liberty with film as an artwork is one thing, but butchering a classic with over the top gore, sex, and nudity destroyed the legacy the original created. With Zombie’s next project Halloween II coming out this week, I am hesitant that I will like it, but fans of Zombie should be in for a treat. I never like to judge prior to seeing a film, so we’ll just have to wait and see how Zombie handles Laurie Strode’s run in again with the maniacal Michael Meyers.

Barthes movie came from a dream!

Review/Interview by Stan Robinson In “Cold Souls”, Paul Giamatti stars as himself, an actor in rehearsals for a Russian play and suffering from anxiety. An article in the New Yorker about a high-tech company promising to alleviate suffering by extracting souls for a time to be restored later catches his eye. Giamatti signs up for their service, with the thought that once the play is over, he would get his soul back. Complications develop when Giamatti’s stored soul is missing, the target of an ambitious and talentless Russian soap-opera actress who wants’ his soul to become a big star! Writer/director Sophie Barthes told me the idea for “Cold Souls” came to her in a dream with Woody Allen as the central character, holding a box, which contained a soul! Her first draft was written with Woody Allen in mind, and then the reality of not

having access to Woody Allen set in. Seeing Paul’s performances in many films, the script was fine tuned with Paul in mind…

that “real Paul” might have while trying to find the base of a character in real life and his reactions are priceless!

Stan: What was Paul’s reaction when the central character would be him, an actor who would be playing Paul Giamatti?

Stan: That must have been a real challenge because you as director probably didn’t want to step into to Paul’s private world as a person, yet, the film is about an actor named Paul Giamatti, who can’t find the character for the play he’s rehearsing, and decides that maybe he should put his soul in storage to better become the character in the play!

Sophie: (laughing) He’s very modest and said, “Its not going to be interesting if its about me”, when I gave him the draft of the script, he suggested that a character with a separate set of nuances could certainly be named Paul Giamatti. That’s how I reworked the script. Stan: That must have been a real chore for you, in the course of shooting a scene, what if Paul was being captured over and above the “character Paul”! Sophie: (again a laugh!) That happened quite often, the character of “Uncle Vanya” in the play that “Character Paul” was trying to capture, frequently had the reaction

Sophie: We didn’t do a lot of rehearsing, Paul and I talked about the aspects of “character Paul”, blocked a lot of the movement around the set, and worked out what “character Paul’s” reactions should be relating to the aspects of souls, storage, and what would be the mind set of a person who might not get his soul back!

heartedness when “character Paul” sets out to Russia to get his soul back! Sophie: I wanted to give just enough for the viewer to relate their feelings of the vastness and the complexity of the soul, and through the character, feel his determination at the thought he might loose it, and the all out effort he makes to get it back! Stan: Sophie Barthes, congratulations on a marvelous film that’s entertaining, insightful, and showcases the talent of Paul Giamatti!

“Play the Game”, director Marc Feinberg’s film based on real experiences! Review/Interview by Stan Robinson David (Paul Campbell), determined to help his lonely, widowed grandfather Joe (Andy Griffith) get back into dating, decides to teach him his “secrets of succeeding” with the opposite sex, while using them to meet Julie (Marla Sokoloff), the woman of his dreams. While David’s techniques appear to be off their mark with Julie, they work for Grandpa Joe, as he becomes the “player” of the retirement

Stan: How where you able to assemble such a talented group of veteran actors for “Play the Game”! Marc: It was my script! The actors I offered the roles to, haven’t been offered those kinds of parts in quite sometime. Andy (Griffith) told me he took the role for two main reasons, one, he got to have a bedroom scene, and two, he didn’t die at the end of the movie! The theme of “Play the Game” is about living life, a full and passionate life, and celebrating the life of a senior with all of its positive aspects. Stan: “Play the Game” appealed to me on the level of relating to two generations, the seniors and the younger generation, simultaneously.

Marc: The story is universal; it applies whether you’re 18 or 80. A lot of the story is based on my own grandfather! He started dating again when he was 89 years old and when I saw him going through a lot of the same things that younger people go through, I realized it doesn’t matter how old you are, its still scary, still nerve racking, sometimes upsetting, and rewarding as well. I didn’t really appreciate that until I started to really hangout with grandpa and that was the message I really wanted to bring to the story!

Taking Woodstock - Jonathan Groff, Demetri Martin

“Taking Woodstock”,

Stan: Those stories are based on your grandfather, how cool is that!

how a slice of history came to be!

Marc: Most of the stories are his, out of his life, his friends, I started hanging out with them and there are some great stories! For some reason, when the stories are coming from someone in their 80’s, rather than someone in their teens, it’s a lot more refreshing! And not to give anything away, the ending lets everyone know that life is about living and relationships!

Most know or remember the historic summer of 1969 when the “3 days of Peace & Music in White Lake”, known as Woodstock became part of the public consciousness and a part of history. “Taking Woodstock”, directed by Oscar winner Ang Lee, recreates the events leading to Woodstock based on the memoirs of Elliot Tiber. Tiber, an interior designer in Greenwich Village, has to move back upstate to help save the El Monaco motel, owned by his parents, from being taken over by the bank. When Elliot finds that a planned music and arts festival has lost its permit from the neighboring town of Wallkill, NY, Elliot calls the producer to offer his family’s motel to the promoters and generate some much-needed business. He also introduces the producer to his neighbor who operates a 600-acre dairy farm close by. That dairy farm eventually becomes the site for the music festival that gets the attention of the entire nation, and destined to become that part of history known as Woodstock!

Stan: The ending is the perfect twist; I didn’t see it coming! I won’t give it away either, I’ll just urge our readers to go on a date, young or old, and see “Play the Game”, it’s the perfect date movie for couples of any age! “Play the Game”, starring Paul Campbell, Andy Griffith, Doris Roberts, Liz Sheridan and Marla Sokoloff. Written and Directed by Marc Fienberg; Rated PG-13 for sexual content and language; Slowhand Cinema Releasing Runtime: 103 minutes.

Review by Stan Robinson

“Taking Woodstock” captures the humor, fortitude, and the dream of a music & arts festival that was destined to be 3 days to help define the peace movement of the sixties. The ensemble cast along with songs from the 60’s music icons, including The Doors, The Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane, director Ang Lee presents a look at the summer of 1969, through the eyes of Elliot Tiber and the experience of over 500,000 young people who made their way to the unknown slice of real estate in White Lake,

that changed popular culture, forever... Starring Demetri Martin, Jonathan Groff, Henry Goodman, Imelda Staunton, Emile Hirsch, Dan Fogler, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Live Schreiber. Directed by Ang Lee; written by James Schamus; Rated R for graphic nudity, some sexual content, drug use and language; Focus Features release; Runtime: 110 minutes.

WINE! SECTION

Get in My Belly: What do the words “Table Wine” signify on an American wine label? The term Table Wine means different things to wine enthusiasts and novices alike. Most of us probably conjure up a vision of wine sold by the jug or a wine that is not of good quality whatsoever. In fact in different countries “Table Wine” means different things. One of the most common misunderstandings is that the term “Table Wine” means that table grapes were used to produce the wine. While table grapes can be used to produce wine, they require the addition of an extensive amount of sugar to create sufficient fermentation to produce the alcohol we expect in wine. Second, the flavor that would come from using

table grapes instead of wine grapes would be lacking of any depth or character. A further misunderstanding is that the term “table wine” signifies a lower quality of wine, made from inferior grapes. This is simply not true. There are many fine examples of award winning table wines. Here in Arizona, Kokopelli Winery produces Sweet Lucy, which is Red Table Wine, and it is the single largest selling Arizona wine in the state. In fact, some of Italy’s most expensive wines are classified as “Table Wine”. So, what does “Table Wine” mean in America? Simply that the wine has between 7-14% alcohol. So, next time you see the term table wine on a bottle, don’t think that it means anything other than alcohol by volume.

Wine Trivia Question: Q: Who made the first wine in North America? A: French Huguenots made a wine from Muscadine grape in a Florida settlement in 1564.

Beer Trivia Question: Q: Who made the first beer in the North America? A: In 1587 the first beer was brewed at Raleigh’s colony in Virginia.

The first question we must ask is whether there are really any differences between expert and novice tasters? Are experts really more skilled at detecting and labeling flavors or do they just blow a lot of hot air? While there is no research on this question for cigar smoking, we can look at a similar hobby for answers: wine tasting. Research on wine tasting has shown that experts reviews of wines are shorter in length but contain more descriptive terms. In other words, the wine experts descriptions favored quality not quantity. In an article published in 1990, cognitive researcher Gregg Solomon found that wine experts were more consistent in their use of flavor labels than novices and were able to reliably match wines they tasted (blindly) to descriptions of wines written by other experts. Apparently, expert wine tasters have learned a vocabulary that enables them to consistently communicate flavors and have also developed links in memory that pair a particular flavor with the correct term. So, indeed, there are some significant differences between expert and novice tasters. In order to become an expert cigar taster there are two different types of expertise that must be developed: Perceptual Expertise and Verbal Expertise. Perceptual expertise is the kind of expertise gained through tasting lots of different kinds of cigars (actual sensory experiences). By trying many types of cigars (from mild to full bodied, earthy to spicy, sweet to woody), a cigar smoker will develop a larger catalog of flavor memories that can be used when trying to label the flavors in a new cigar. Verbal expertise involves experience in describing and labeling the flavors during cigar smoking. That is, by attempting to describe and label the flavors and aromas when smoking a cigar, cigar smokers will develop a better ability to organize and access their flavor memory catalog. Now let’s turn our attention to the $64,000 question: how can YOU become an expert taster? Or even just a better taster than you are now? Below are some specific guidelines that can be used to develop your cigar tasting skills. Practice, practice, practice describing your cigar experiences By far the biggest reason why most cigar smokers are not very proficient at

For cigar smokers, the best way to practice this skill is to keep a cigar journal. Jot down anything and everything you notice when you are smoking a cigar. Think of it like the word association test that psychiatrists use… say the first thing that comes to your mind when you take a draw. Don’t worry about whether the flavor labels you generate match those you have read in reviews or those detected by other smokers. Research on wine tasting has shown that novices can improve their ability to remember and recognize different tastes by trying to verbally describe the flavors, even if they do a very poor job at it at first (Solomon, 1990). The key is just to do it. As you practice labeling flavors in a cigar you will develop better connections between the analytical, language areas of your brain and your flavor processor in your gustatory cortex. Finally, when you are first starting to keep a journal, try not to read any cigar reviews right before you smoking and describing a cigar. As discussed in my last article, this could easily lead to verbal overshadowing where your brain will “detect” a certain flavor in a cigar because it is “supposed” to be there not because you are actually experiencing it. Smoke slower, taste better Another hindrance to correctly discerning flavors in a cigar is smoking too fast: draws on a cigar should be separated by at least 1 minute. Smoking faster than this rate will cause problems for distinguishing cigar flavors. Smoking too fast will cause the tobacco to reach too high of a temperature, resulting in strong bitter flavors that will mask the more subtle flavors in the cigar. Unfortunately, these “hot”, bitter flavors in a cigar also leave a long aftertaste, so it is difficult for your palate to recover from overheating. Smoking too fast can also lead to tar build-up in the end of the cigar, which will make the last third of the cigar almost unsmokeable. The final third of a cigar is where a lot of the complex flavors occur in cigar smoking. Finally, smoking too fast is not conducive to flavor identification because it does not allow time for your brain to properly process the taste and aroma signals and access your flavor memories. Leaving enough time to focus on and savor the flavors after each draw will greatly enhance your ability to identify them. If you think you smoke too fast try keeping a watch beside you and taking a draw every minute. After you have done this for awhile it will become second nature. Try a wide variety of cigars Another key to being able to recognize and identify the flavors in a cigar is to develop a

large catalog of flavor memories (perceptual expertise) that can be used to compare with the flavors you are currently experiencing in a cigar. The most obvious way to do this is to try a wide variety of cigars with a lot of different flavor profiles, wrapper types, and countries of origin. Be sure to try different length cigars and a variety of ring gauges, which not only helps us to better distinguish flavors, but is also the best way to find which cigars we prefer. Get more adventurous with your eating and drinking habits While the obvious way to achieve perceptual expertise is by smoking a large variety of cigars, your catalog of flavor memories can also be improved by trying a variety of different cuisines and libations. Many of the flavors we pick up in a cigar are also present in the substances we eat and drink. Personally, I have picked up some really interesting “food flavors” in cigars such as barbequed chicken and cinnamon. By trying different cuisines (e.g., Indian, Moroccan, Mexican) and drinks (e.g., wheat beer, cognac, wine) will help train our palate to be better prepared for cigar smoking. Smoke in an environment free of distractions As most of us know, our perception of the world is dramatically different when we are concentrating and focusing our attention on something, as compared to when we are multi-tasking. Trying to do too many tasks at once will cause many things to go completely unnoticed. Therefore, your ability to distinguish flavors in a cigar will be lessened if you are engaged in a heated conversation at your local cigar shop, distracted by your laptop computer, or engrossed in a big football game. While of course these activities can all be enjoyable companions to cigar smoking, it will be beneficial to your cigar expertise if you can also set aside some time to smoke a cigar by yourself in an environment (no TV or music) where you can focus your full attention on the tastes and aromas you are getting with each draw. Learn how to retrohale Channeling the smoke through your nasal cavity as you expel it (“retrohaling”) can substantially enhance and intensify the flavors in a cigar. Therefore, for some smokers, the very subtle flavors that are barely detectable when the smoke is expelled from the mouth will be “turned up a notch” when retrohaling. But be sure to take your time developing this skill; begin with mild cigars and only retrohale two or three times during the duration of the cigar. Jumping into retrohaling too quickly and/or with full-bodied cigars can lead to unpleasant sensations that may hinder your ability to distinguish cigar flavors. If you practice the guidelines listed above, you will certainly be able to improve your cigar tasting expertise. More importantly, as you begin to correctly identify and associate the flavors and aromas in cigars, you will be able to enjoy your cigar smoking experiences in new ways. You will enjoy more rewarding interactions with others who have smoked the same cigars and you will become better at recognizing the characteristics that you like in cigars.

Brad Berko’s SCOTTSDALE BB Smokes

One of the great joys of cigar smoking is correctly identifying flavors and aromas associated with a particular cigar. Noting the coffee and chocolate flavors in an earthy Maduro or distinguishing between the “pepper-spice” in an aged Corojo and the “sweet-hay-spice” in a Cameroon wrapper, is a rewarding and pleasurable experience. Correctly and consistently naming flavors and aromas helps us to better relate our cigar experiences with other cigar smokers and helps us to identify the characteristics we enjoy in a cigar.

distinguishing and labeling flavors is that most of us just don’t have a lot of experience describing tastes and smells. Think about it… how often do we try to pick out the spices used in a gourmet dish or tell our co-worker exactly what flavors we notice in our cup of coffee? We normally use very general labels like “that dish was spicy” or, “this coffee tastes rich”. As the research on wine tasting suggests, becoming an expert taster requires one to develop verbal expertise by being more specific in flavor descriptions; giving more precise labels for flavors such as “that dish had a nice white pepper spice” or “this coffee tastes like dark chocolate”.

GOING OUT TO DINNER – WITHOUT GOING OUT OF YOUR MIND As if it’s not already, eating out is about to become a bigger and bigger dieting challenge. Sticking to your guns away from home is hard for many reasons. They all seem to boil down to this dilemma: How can you possibly have control of your diet when you don’t control your eating environment? But here’s the surprise—you CAN control your environment, no matter where you eat. You are the customer and you are in charge. From the time you pick up the car keys to the time you pick up the check, only you can decide whether to take a simple step forward or allow yourself to be coaxed (and yes, sometimes even manipulated) into busting your calorie budget. Here are some ideas and strategies

that will help you take charge of your next culinary adventure, every step of the way: 1) CHOOSING A RESTAURANT Eating healthy while eating out is all about one word: preparation. If you go into a restaurant cold, without any thought, you’ll be more susceptible to the creamy, the fatty and the gooey before you can prepare your defenses. Give yourself a chance by giving yourself options.Avoid “all-you-caneat” places. More diets go here to die than any other type of restaurant. ●●

Choose a place with a varied menu. It’ll make it easier to find something healthy and to your taste.

●●

Don’t decide to eat out on the spur of the moment, if possible. It’s best to make plans and account for it during the rest of the day’s menu planning.

●●

●●

Make reservations. This cuts down on waiting and hunger time at the restaurant, as well as the number of drinks you have at the bar.

●●

While making reservations, check on preparation methods and their ability and willingness to accommodate your requests. Learn what options you have and what substitution choices are available.

●●

Try to reserve a table away from the kitchen so piles of delectable dishes aren’t paraded by as you’re deciding what to eat.

●●

Know what you can afford to spend out of your calorie budget – but don’t starve yourself, it’ll only court temptation.

●●

Don’t leave the house hungry. About 1-2 hours before eating, have a small, healthy snack (apple, small salad) to avoid premeal munching later.

●●

Bring along some whole wheat or rye crackers and packets of your favorite low-calories salad dressings. Don’t count on the restaurant to always have the ones you like.

with extensive salad bars usually have healthy options available. ●●

●●

Try to avoid restaurants that promote “entertainment” eating, where the food is one of several attractions. This usually means the menu is choked full of fried, fatty and huge dishes. Any restaurant with a mascot is probably bad news.

2) BEFORE LEAVING THE HOUSE The battle is often lost before we even open the door. Know what you’re getting yourself into so you’re not surprised later or forced to choose between two deep-fried evils. All it takes is a few minutes.Go to the restaurant’s website to find a menu (or have them fax one to you) and study it. ●●

Decide what you want to eat before you leave the house. Is this a chicken night or are you craving pasta? If possible, choose a specific menu item so you’re not tempted by the menu at the

3) WHEN YOU SIT DOWN This is a critical point that sets the tone for the rest of the evening. It’s when much of our mindless munching happens, we can see and smell the food all around us, and we’re usually at our hungriest. If there were ever a perfect time to take charge of your experience, this is it. Get off on the right foot. Start by politely sending back those free munchies that show up right away. Bread baskets, rolls, tortilla chips or Chinese noodles can be bottomless pits of calories. Not to mention all of the butter that usually comes with them. ●●

If you need to munch a little to ward off hunger, ask the server if something else is available. They might have rye or whole wheat bread or rolls, melba toast or whole wheat crackers instead.

Ask if there is a lower-fat alternative spread instead of the butter. If not, plain rolls aren’t so bad.

●●

●●

Choose salsa over con queso or other cheesy dips.

Ask for your food not to be prepared with butter, cream sauces or oil

●●

●●

Order water right away and start sipping. Much of what we mistake as hunger is often merely thirst.

When in doubt, opt for brighter color. Most high-calorie, high-fat menu items are brown, beige, white or pale yellow (other than some desserts, of course).

●●

A glass of spicy tomato juice or vegetable drink can bridge the hunger gap.

●●

●●

Dessert menus, with huge, tasty close-ups of caloric landmines are on the table for a reason. Even if it’s a tabletop display, give it to your server.

Don’t feel rushed into making a hasty decision. Just because your server is in a hurry doesn’t mean you have to be. At the same time, if you’ve made a healthy decision, stop looking at the menu immediately.

4) ORDERING UP Many people stumble here as they make split-second decisions and rationalize away poor choices. But since you have a plan ahead of time, it should make it easier to stay on course. If you’re faced with a menu and no time to prepare, there are still a number of rules of thumb and tricks you can use. Try to order first. Listening to everyone else’s choices can be pretty tempting. ●●

●●

●●

●●

●●

Don’t ever be shy about asking questions or making requests. The food is every bit as important as the restaurant, the table and the setting, so make sure it’s what you want. Try ordering menu items a la carte. Platters, combos and meals may come with extras you might not want. For example, a group of side items can make a great meal and fruit can make a delicious appetizer. Ask about the size of the dish. This could be important information when watching calories. You can add vegetables to just about anything (salad, pasta, soup, cheeseburgers) if you just ask. Watch out for cheese, sour cream, gravies and special

sauces.

●●

Try ordering one course at a time. Order a healthy appetizer, but don’t order your soup or salad until you’re finished, then eventually your entrée. Sure, you may be starving now, but how will you feel in 20 minutes after the appetizer? Still feel like facing that pile of country fried chicken? Take your time, relax and enjoy.

5) APPETIZERS When faced with a menu, the first reaction of many dieters is to skip right to the entrees without considering an appetizer. While they may believe they’re eating less this way, jumping right into the heavy stuff when hungry may actually load on more calories. To stave off hunger or the desire to binge, try to start with something other than the entrée. The good news is that this “something” can come from anywhere on the menu, not just the Appetizer section. Look at other parts of the menu (Salads, Soups, side items, even breakfast items) for healthy starter options. ●●

Some great starter options: fruit, melon, steamed seafood, smoked salmon.

●●

The kitchen may be able to put together a small vegetable tray for you upon request.

●●

Broth-based soups or consommé can be a tasty first course.

●●

Avoid anything fried or breaded, and be wary of any item that

●●

Use ketchup, mustard, bbq sauce, salsa or taco sauce instead of mayonnaise, tartar sauce or any creamy sauces or dips.

6) SOUPS & SALADS Often high in fiber, the right soups and salads can curb hunger and add a bunch of vegetables and nutrients to your meal. Much better to be filling up on leafy greens at the beginning of your meal after all, than munching on those last few dozen french fries on your plate. Salad bars can be good or evil, depending on how you use them. Pass over the grated cheeses, eggs, creamy dressings, bacon, croutons, pasta salad, potato salad and macaroni salad, and stick with the staples of sliced carrots, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, snap peas, raisins, nuts, garbanzo beans, fruit and other fresh produce. That alone can be quite a meal. ●●

Ask for extra vegetables on your house salad.

●●

Spend a little extra and order the spinach salad or one with more vegetables. House salad greens often lack nutrients and taste and try to make up for it with more high-calorie toppings.

●●

Always get your salad dressings on the side. Instead of pouring it on top, dip your fork in the dressing before taking a bite.

●●

If you can’t find low-fat dressing options that you like, try a squeeze of lemon, or vinegar with a touch of oil.

●●

●●

If you do end up with something breaded, peel off the coating; much of the fat usually resides here.

being high in calories. Much better to start with a house salad and ask the kitchen to add on ingredients and taco flavorings. ●●

●●

Avoid creamy soups like chowder or bisque, which can be loaded with fat and calories. Instead, try broth-based soups, like minestrone, wonton, beef barley, gazpacho, consumme, tortilla, or the classics like chicken noodle or vegetable. Bean or pea soups (like split pea, bean and ham, lentil, black bean or navy bean) have more calories, but are so packed with fiber and nutrients, and are so filling, that it may be worth it.

7) ENTREES Ah, the centerpiece of your meal – and usually the biggest collection of calories. Still, there is no need to sacrifice fulfillment and taste for the sake of eating lighter. You are usually safe with this course if you simply make good choices in two areas: preparation methods and sauces. Bad preparation words = buttery, breaded, buttered, fried, pan-fried, creamed, scalloped, au gratin, a la mode. ●●

●●

Good preparation words = grilled, baked, steamed, broiled, poached, stir-fried, roasted, blackened.

●●

Avoid sauces made with milk, cheese, oil or mayonnaise.

●●

Marinara and tomato-based sauces are usually more flavorful and healthier than creamy sauces and gravies. As a rule of thumb, red is usually better than white or yellow.

●●

Get all sauces, gravies and creams on the side so you can add to taste.

●●

Even better, rely more on herbs and spices to flavor your food. Become familiar with your favorites and ask for them by name.

●●

If ordering pasta with a cream sauce, ask the kitchen to go light on the sauce. AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

●●

Know your fatty and lean meats. Pork: fairly lean except sausage, bacon, and ribs. Fish: all fairly lean or contain healthy fat. Chicken: fairly lean especially when skin and fat is removed, and white is leaner that dark meat. Ground b eef products (in order of most to least fat): ground beef, ground chuck, ground round. Eye of round and roasts are leaner, while steaks and ribs have more fat. Don’t eat the skin of chicken, turkey or duck. You can save yourself loads of fat and calories with this simple step.

●●

Ask for your fish or meat to be broiled, with no extra butter.

●●

If you order prime rib or roast, ask for a center or inner cut, as there will likely be less fat.

●●

A recommended serving size of meat is 3-4 ounces. If you order a 9 ounce steak, make sure there is some left.

●●

Vegetarian options are not always lower in calories if they’re loaded with cheese, nuts and other non-vegetable ingredients.

BEER: THE GOOD AND THE BAD

When an advertising agency, S. H. Benson, conducted market research during the 1920’s to find out what people liked about a well known stout , people responded that they felt good when they drank the stout, the slogan “Guinness is Good for You” was born. It is still used in some countries (notably in Africa) that do not regulate advertising claims as zealously as the U.K. and North America.

With that in mind, here are the facts.

Point

Counterpoint

Beer contains no fat.

Beer contains alchohol, and there are about 7 calories per gram of alcohol, compared to 4 calories for carbohydrates or protein. Fat has about 9 calories per gram.

Beer is low in sugar.

22

We could consider this stout a proxy for beer — what’s good in stout is good in other beers, and what’s not so good isn’t. That said, not all beers are alike. Some contain more calories, some more carbohydrates, etc. Meanwhile, the medical profession faces its own dilemma: Is it ethical to advocate drinking alcoholic drinks; Or is it ethical not to when the benefits are well established?

Alcohol can cause blood sugar levels to drop more rapidly. That can stimulate your appetite, and disrupt your ability to tell when you’ve had enough to eat. This can also create fatigue and your energy level will suffer.

Beer is a source of soluble fiber which is derived from the cell walls of malted barley. A liter of beer contains an average of 20% of the recommended daily intake of fiber and some beers can provide up to 60%. As well as aiding healthy bowel function, this has a further benefit by slowing down the digestion and absorption of food and reducing cholesterol levels, which may help to reduce the risk of heart disease. Beer itself has no cholesterol.

Because alcohol interferes with the body’s absorption of vitamins and minerals, it can lessen the body’s ability to burn stored fat. Calories from alcohol may go right to your stomach. Also, alcohol is detoxified by the liver. In the process of metabolizing excess quantities of alcohol, the liver swells and may itself become filled with fat. All these factors contribute to what is known as a “beer belly.”

One 12-ounce serving of “regular” (150 calories) beer per night adds more than 1,000 calories a week to a diet, and that works out to an extra 15 pounds per year. One light beer per night adds 10 pounds.

A 5-foot-9, 160-pound, 30-year-old man must walk only about 40 minutes at 3 miles per hour (moderate pace) to burn 150 calories.

Moderate levels of consumption of beer have been shown to reduce stress and the chances of heart disease.

Alcohol can impair your judgment, causing you to drink more than you should. To top it off, many people eat high-calorie, high-sodium snacks when they drink.

Beer contains significant amounts of magnesium, selenium, potassium, phosphorus, biotin, and is chock full of B vitamins.

Alcohol destroys Vitamin C and Vitamin B complex. Drinking beer that has not filtered out the Vitamin B (such as English “real ale,” many microbrewed beers and homebrew) will help combat the effects of alcohol — most notably a hangover.

In short… Beer is good. Beer is our friend. In our world, the good shall always prevail. However, we’ll leave it to you to decide if the glass is half full or half empty. Or even partially full of emptiness. Hopefully it’s cold, fresh and ready to be embraced. Now that you’re informed, the August 27th - September 2nd, 2009

freedom to choose is a beautiful thing. Drink, consume and enjoy… with all the facts at hand. Always be safe, know when to say when, and be sure to impress your friends with this vast, in-depth knowledge. The pro’s and con’s, the up’s and down’s… the in’s and out’s of beer. AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

Regions Bistro: Hey, it’s not all doom and gloom in the restaurant business, we have some new openings on the horizon and this one to announce; Regions Bistro which opened to the public on August 18th. The restaurant, located at 9343 East Shea Blvd. in Scottsdale, features a new take on American comfort food. That’s restaurant-talk, but what that really means is the menu features things like Regions Mac and Cheese (loaded with choice of lump crab, shrimp or chicken), Roast Turkey Dinner (thanksgiving year round - roasted whole turkey, stuffing, smashed potato, and house made cranberry sauce), and Mom’s Wild Mushroom Meatloaf (served with buttermilk mash and sweet pea succotash). Plus they have a huge assortment of sandwiches, burgers and yummy small plates. I haven’t tried the food yet, but hope to soon and then will give you the REAL lowdown. Sounds pretty good though, huh? In addition to their Scottsdale location they’ll be opening another in Tempe on Mill in October. Check out the menu, stop in and let us know what you think. For more info and the menu visit regionsbistro.com.

Got a Good Band?: Oktoberfest in Tempe is a long ways off (October 2nd-4th), but they are hosting their popular garage band contest again and space is limited. Eight high school bands and eight college bands will be put into two divisions and battle head-to-head for all types of prizes and the claim. As they are only accepting eight to each, space is limited so to enter e-mail garageband@tempeoktoberfest. com soon…and then start practicing your set. Gala, Gala, Gala: You know what makes us awesome? Well, no not that, BUT the fact that we tell you where you need to go and can go from a garage band competition to an awesome charity gala you should consider. We love telling you about galas because they are fun, you can make lots of new contacts and best of all they help a great cause. So ANYWAYS, the 100 Club of Arizona, a non-profit dedicated to standing behind the men and women who stand behind the badge, has their 3rd Annual Jason Schechterle Scholarship Ball coming up on Saturday, September 26th at the Arizona Grand Resort. This particular event will help to fund the 100 Club Scholarship Program which helps the fam of catastrophically injured officers and firefighters, among others, in their pursuit of a higher education. It is a formal event that will have a social hour, silent auction, dinner, and dancing. It’s $75 per individual ticket or $750 per 10 and you can buy them at 100club.org. If you are in business or want to get into an elite social scene, this is a can’t miss event to meet a lot of the Valley’s movers and shakers.

Tap Music: Okay, okay, so I’m a music lover of all kinds, but I’ve never been to a full-fledged tap show, but I bet it’d be pretty awesome— sort of like STOMP. Well, good news for me! TAP DOGS, the most successful tap show of all time, will be at the Mesa Arts Center on Saturday, September 25, at 7:30 p.m. Created by Dein Perry, TAP DOGS is no ordinary cane, top hat and tuxedo show. Instead it’s a grooving and fun theatrical entertainment that incorporates theatre, dance, and rock concert. If you don’t believe that it’ll be fun just know that TAP DOGS has toured throughout North America, Europe, Australia, the Far East and South Africa, selling over 12 million seats in 330 cities. Seriously, 12 MILLION seats! For more info and tix visit mesartscenter.com. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

Angelo Sicilliano, had a chest that expanded to 54 3/4 inches and biceps of 17 inches before muscles were all the rage in the 1920’s. His friends at the gymnasium took notice and declared that he looked just like the statue of Atlas on the corner bank building. The name stuck, and eventually Angelo legally changed his name to Charles Atlas…His advise and books sold millions. The rest is history.

First of all, chalk manufactures set us up to waste chalk, which of course, results in having to buy it more frequently. They do this by designing a small divot in the chalk which most players assume is where they are supposed to put the tip. WRONG! Chalking from the center accomplishes two things and both are bad. First, you bore through the chalk and about half way through you are looking for a new piece which means you threw away over 50% and that is throwing away money! It is all the same chalk. The center isn’t different than the perimeter. Secondly, you ruin your cue because the chalk imbeds itself into the wood and ferrule which is a personal pet peeve of mine.

If you chalk properly, one piece of chalk can last from 2-6 months depending on how often you play. Until next time remember, the magic happens between the tip and the cue ball and that is where the chalk lives.

Robert Mallen G Cue Billiard Store

To avoid this unsightly appearance and to save money you should chalk your cue as follows: Using the perimeter only of the chalk, stroke the chalk onto the tip from the perimeter of the tip while slowing rotating the cue stick. Using forward thrusting motions, gradually work your way into the tips center. This helps

Most players prefer “Masters” Chalk; however, for a little more money, better performance (yes chalk can change your performance), and much less mess on your table, I recommend “Longoni Blue Diamond World Cup Chalk.” It is well worth it.

Zz Top Refuses To Skip A Beat Aerosmith Rumors Continue to Soar

Several unfortunate health setbacks and rumored internal bickering is fueling speculation that rock band Aerosmith is breaking up, observers say. The appearance of a fan video showing vocalist Steven Tyler, who broke his shoulder from a fall from a stage this month, looking frail as he shopped at a Pembroke, Mass., liquor store is making fans wonder if the end is near for the legendary group, The Boston Globe reported Sunday. In addition to Tyler’s Aug. 5 fall in Sturges, S.D., he also hurt his leg at show earlier this summer, causing seven dates to be canceled. Guitarist Brad Whitford hit his head getting out of a car, forcing him to miss the band’s first shows in June, and bassist Tom Hamilton, a throat cancer survivor, skipped shows due to an unspecified medical treatment, the newspaper noted. Guitarist Joe Perry, however, posted a series of Twitter messages Saturday denying the speculation, saying, “Aero is Not breaking up!” and asserting the band is only on hiatus until Tyler recovers. The Globe said Tyler’s recent decision to hire a separate management company and the continued absence of a long-promised new album are also reinforcing reports of tensions within Aerosmith.

In light of the just-announced cancellation of Aerosmith/ZZ Top tour dates which had been slated, ZZ Top is mounting a tour of its own that will hit the ground running as soon as this coming week. Routing will take ZZ Top to many of the markets that had been on that cancelled tour’s itinerary, giving fans a second chance, in a manner of speaking, to see the band after all. ZZ Top affirms a commitment to scheduling as many dates as feasible as soon as possible with more specific details relating to markets, venues, ticket sales, etc. to be revealed shortly. Aerosmith dropped out of the tour due to injuries sustained last week by front man Steven Tyler. When it became apparent that the dates they were scheduled to share with Aerosmith were in jeopardy, ZZ Top band members — Billy F Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard — caucused with management and came up with a plan to get the show back on the road on an ASAP basis. New ZZ Top dates, informally known within the band’s inner circle as the “Necessity-Is-A-Mother Tour,” will be posted on zztop.com as they are confirmed. It is expected that as many as 20 performance dates including stops in Los Angeles, Anaheim, Chicago, Detroit, Atlantic, City, Washington, DC, Boston and New York will be part of the tour that will launch within the next few days on the west coast. The band will also be spending time later this month in the studio with producer Rick Rubin before heading out on the road in September. In October the band embarks on a European tour that will bring them to concert venues in Greece, Holland, Austria, the UK and elsewhere.

Always walking a fine line between rock, blues and jazz, virtuoso guitarist Jeff Beck is captured on his first dvd ever in the intimate setting of Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club to perform predominantly his 70’s era material. Truly one of music’s most respected guitarists, Beck rolls through such trademarks as “Beck’s Bolero”, “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”, “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” along with an instrumental version of The Beatles “A Day In The Life”. They are executed with such brilliance and feeling it’s no wonder why Beck is so well respected and consider by many to be a legend. His playing is enhanced (if that’s even possible) by the musicianship of Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards) and Tal Wilkenfield (bass), or perhaps the other way around. Joining Beck for guest spots NE RECO RStone Z O are Joss D K C who turns in an incredible version of “People Get Ready” and Eric Clapton on “Little Brown Bird” and

“You Need Love”. With 21 tunes in all and interviews, this one is worth the admission price. If you’re not familiar enough with his playing other than the occasional guest spot, this is a perfect introduction to what music fans have known for years: his playing exudes class, feeling, melody, reckless abandon, masterful musicianship and sheer execution of the guitar that no one can match. Beautifully shot and with an excellent sound mix, would you expect anything less from Jeff Beck? – Stephen Wilkinson

Picture and article by Chad Haire

VW has become aggressive in its pursuit to take back its market share. It starts with their new CC and it’s a very good start too! We can begin with the styling. It looks very similar to the Mercedes CLS and it got lots of positive looks on the street. VW borrows many cabin materials and style from its sister division of Audi, which designs some of the best interiors in the industry. It shows here. This may be a $30 grand car, but it looks just as nice as an $80 grand car. Can’t beat that. The bucket seats hold you in tight and they are very comfortable. I had the base engine, which is the proven 2.0 liter turbo that cranks out 200 horsepower, hooked to a nice 6-speed automatic with manual override. Plenty of power here. Gas mileage is rated at 19-29 mpg. Mine varied since we were driving in a July heat wave and turbo engines don’t like heat. In hard city driving, it was as low as 14 mpg. We did get 28-32 on the freeway though. Overall average was 20-22, so it all evens out. The steering feel, firm brakes and firm cornering ability make this a blast to drive on curving back roads. The ride was firm, but comfortable -- a big improvement over the Passat model on which this is based. We have only two minor gripes. First, the auto-dimming mirror can’t be turned off, which isn’t good when changing lanes in heavy night traffic. Secondly, the gearbox is too easy to shift out of drive and into sport mode. Otherwise, I love the CC. With automatic tranny and satellite radio, it’s $29,325. But with a large V-8 engine, all-wheel drive, sunroof, leather trim, and navigation . . . you can hit $42,000 with ease. Yipes!

Dear goazsolar,

Dear goazsolar,

I live in a 2300 sq. ft. home with a tile roof. How big of a PV system should I install?

How many solar panels would I need to power my hot water heater?

Unfortunately, there is no one answer for the size of a pv (photovoltaic) solar panel system. The tile roof does not present a problem at all. Regarding the size of the system, there are a number of variables that come into play. Site orientation is one. Site orientation is the direction your home faces. Some of the other issues that need to be taken into consideration are what shadowing obstacles are on the roof. Air conditioning units, chimneys, skylights, mature vegetation, and venting all come into play. Any trained professional will be able to help you.

You would not want to use solar panels purely for the purpose of heating water. Solar pv (photovoltaic) panels are used for the generation of electricity to reduce your electricity consumption. Thermal collectors on the other hand produce heat for your hot water needs. They both reduce your electricity consumption but in different ways. Most people do both to maximize available space on their roof and if space is truly an issue a thermal collector is the best bang for the buck. For questions please email jerry@ goazsolar.com
