money…they only start making it once they’ve stopped working just for it. In other words, they involve themselves in work they love and the money just flows automatically. They have money because they’ve let go of it…the person is working because they love the challenge and rewards of what they’re doing more than the money! That’s probably why they’re rich!

Letting Go Benjamin Hoff wrote a wonderful book, “The Tao of Pooh”, in which he explains the eastern philosophy of “Tao”in relationship to “Winnie The Pooh, the bear of little brain”. Hoff writes: “We love Pooh because he doesn’t try too hard. Pooh lives in the present moment. Pooh just is.”

When it comes to business and even our personal lives, our happiness and accomplishments are more assured once we’ve learned to let go…live and let go. It can be as simple as that…live and let go... especially of end results. ESPECIALLY end results. To let go is not to deny, but to accept. Acceptance is the key word here. Acceptance is a fundamental precondition to any change. Acceptance leads to relaxation and inner peace. Acceptance allows us to work hard towards our goals and dreams and not be imprisoned by them. I have always been impressed by people who are the least concerned about making an impression. They’re just being themselves and allowing an impression to be made. In addition, they spend their time being impressed by you and, as I said…just being themselves. All the while they have let go of any desperation for affection, so they automatically have the affection they seek. Another example is people who make a lot of

To my way of thinking, we need to be able to live without something in order to attract it to ourselves. Once we let go, we magnetize ourselves to what we want and not only is it drawn to us, but even greater rewards. Even in business, it’s known that in order to close any big deal, we first have to ‘release’ or let go of the big deal. Now, once we’ve set the goals and done the work, it’s time to allow the results to happen in their own natural time. That’s why Fortune 500 companies are so in love with college graduates who grew up on farms because they know very well if you plant a crop, don’t go out every day to see if it’s growing yet, that won’t help, it’ll just ruin the growth process. I have a basic philosophy; “Set your goals, do your work and just let nature take its course.” Yes, just let nature take its course. Just relax and let go. To let go is not to care for, but to care about. To let go is not to be in the middle arranging all the outcomes, but to allow others to determine their own outcomes. To let go is not to cut myself off, it’s the realization that I can’t control another. To let go is not to regret the past, but to grow and live for the future. To let go is to fear less and love more. -Mack Newton Mack Newton is an 8th Degree Black Belt, Senior Master Instructor, Global Tae Kwon-Do Federation International and Chairman of the World Technical Committee

If you love something let it go…

We’ve all heard it said if you love someone let them go. If they come back they’re yours, if they don’t then they never were. As I reading on Cosmo’s website today, they said that this was one of the best pieces of relationship advice that could ever be given to someone. I thought about for a second and then I realized… this is the biggest load of CRAP! Stop and think about it for a second, if you love someone why would you let them go? If they truly loved you as much as you love them then there wouldn’t be a reason for you two to separate. I understand that there comes a point in every relationship when you’re in an argument and you need time to cool off, but if you need more than a day or two away from each other then you need to reevaluate your relationship. If you’ve reached a point in your relationship where you feel you need to completely separate, as in break-up, stop and think why you’ve reached that point. If your partner leaves you then why should you sit around and wait to find out if they’ll come back to you? You need to find someone who’s going to love you and not have a reason to

leave; the right person for you is going to know you two are right for each other while you’re together not apart. So you let that person go and they’ve come back, now what? It’s always going to be in the back of your mind that they left, they walked out on you and needed to find out what life was like without you. Who’s to say it won’t happen again. When it comes to getting back together with ex’s there’s no real starting over. Problems that you two had are always going to be there, regardless of the amount of time you spend apart. In the end, your relationship was second to what that person felt like they needed in their life, YOU were the second best thing. No one deserves to be second best in love and relationships. “When people walk away from you, let them go. Your destiny is never tied to anyone who leaves you, and it doesn’t mean that they’re a bad person. It means that their part in your story is over.” (Unknown Author) Now that you’ve realized that you’re tired of waiting around to see if your ex is going to come back to you, make the decision to make a change in your dating life.

,

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

Golshifteh Farahani plays a Muslim woman whose paralyzed husband (Hamid Djavadan) unconsciously assumes the role of a magical force, which shields her from the sorrows of life in her war-torn village. (R - 98 minutes) Stan: An outstanding performance by actress Golshifteh Farahani who virtually carries the film with almost a 100% of the screen time, and delivers the emotional roller-coaster ride of living in a Middle East city besieged by continuous attacks and as she demonstrates the will to survive at all costs.

‘Devil’s Pass’

‘Drinking Buddies’

Five young filmmakers retrace the steps of a doomed group of Russian hikers in pursuit of an unsolvable mystery. What they find is far more shocking than anything they could have imagined. (R - 96 minutes)

Jake M. Johnson and Olivia Wilde play co-workers at a Chicago brewery, where they spend their days drinking and flirting. They are perfect for each other - except that they are both in relationships. Ron Livingston and Anna Kendrick also star. (R - 90 minutes)

Joseph: After a first hour during which very little happens, “Devil’s Pass” goes completely off the rails. If anyone remains duped and thinks that any of this ridiculousness is real, they are likely a danger to themselves as well as those around them.

Joseph: “Drinking Buddies” operates so much sexual tension that it can be cut with a knife and addresses a universally relatable dilemma in a natural and authentic way with its heart in a goodintentioned place. The experience is extremely intoxicating.

Denzel Washington’s

top Movies “Flight” (2012): An astonishing Washington plays a

pilot whose vices catch up to him in the probe into the crash of a passenger plane he flew. “American Gangster” (2007): Washington is so good at playing bad, heroin marketer Frank Lucas is bound to be cited as one of his defining roles. “Crimson Tide” (1995): Gene Hackman and Washington square off in this tense submarine thriller about a possible nuclear missile launch. “Malcolm X” (1992): The trademark energy of director Spike Lee helped fuel Washington’s notable work as the Muslim icon.

experiences. Hopefully you end up with the kind of relatable authenticity of each character but then also there is not somebody sitting in the audience saying, ‘Hey, they are just making an autobiography here.’ It can take on the dimensions of a character rather than being 100 percent a personal self-expression.” “I hope that people come away feeling like men and women can be friends - even if there is sexual tension there. The pathway to that friendship has to involve acknowledging that sexual tension and overcoming it somehow. I think, additionally, with Jake and Anna’s characters in the film, I am hoping to thematically tell a story about a couple who is able to encounter and then overcome obstacles in their relationship and somehow say that the right person for you is not always obvious.” - Joe Swanberg

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

“It very much came from my own personal experience. I kind of always start there at least. The model of the movie and sort of the relationships were all coming out of things that I related to or had happened to me or friends of mine. And then you get into the fun territory of bringing the actors into the process and sort of

seeing how they relate personally to the story and what they want to bring from their own lives to it. “And you end up with a really nice combination of personal stories that, in the end, don’t resemble one specific person. They become a nice amalgamation of a different people’s

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With more than 22 years of experience in media production, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. Over the years, New York Giants football has been pretty formulaic: Run the football, eat up the clock and keep the defense off the field. And when the defense is on the field, stop the other guys. Except Big Blue didn’t do either very well last year, a big reason why the team released its top runner, Ahmad Bradshaw, in February, thus paving the way for 2012 first-round pick David Wilson to assume the role of workhorse back. Wilson is an intriguing talent. Taken 32nd overall out of Virginia Tech, the former two-sport star (he also competed in track and field) impressed scouts with his speed and agility at the ’12 combines and was widely considered a top-five back in the draft behind Trent Richardson (who would go third overall to the Cleveland Browns). And he certainly backed that up in limited duty his rookie season, rushing for 358 yards on 71 carries while flashing big-play ability with four touchdowns.

The Arizona Lottery is Changing Lives Statewide Under the education pillar, Arizona Lottery dollars fund a variety of statewide programs that are rich in arts and culture, science and technology, and touch many diverse cultures throughout the state. Examples of beneficiaries under this pillar include ASU Gammage and the Greater Valley Area Health Education Center (GVAHEC).

Most people aren’t aware that Arizona Lottery dollars fund a wide variety of public projects and programs that enrich the lives of Arizona residents. In fact, the Arizona Lottery generates $3.4 million per week for important state programs. Every time you play the Lottery, you are participating in the growth and future of our state. The Arizona Lottery focuses its support on four main pillars: education, health and public welfare, the environment, and economic and business development in cities and towns throughout all 15 counties in the state of Arizona.

T

The Arizona Lottery also lends support to critical health and public welfare initiatives that advance the health profession’s workforce and enhance the wellness of Arizona residents. One of the Arizona Lottery’s beneficiaries under the public welfare pillar is CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. CASA volunteers serve as advocates to speak up for abused and neglected children in court. CASA is solely funded by Arizona Lottery dollars, and more than $47 million has been transferred to CASA from the Arizona Lottery to date. This funding has enabled CASA to serve more than 13,500 children statewide. Perhaps one of the most touching CASA stories has been about a special foster child

assistance to aspiring business owners. Since July 1981, the Arizona Lottery has paid out more than $5.4 billion in prizes to players, nearly $3 billion in net funding to the State, and more than $641 million in commissions to retailers. Thanks to the ongoing support of players and the Arizona Legislature, the impact of Arizona Lottery dollars will be felt in even greater measure in the years to come.

In regards to the environment, the Arizona Lottery contributes to the conservation and protection of Arizona’s wildlife and supports wildlife educational and awareness campaigns for residents of all ages throughout the state. Currently, $10 million per year goes to the Arizona Game and Fish Department. This funding is used for public access, environmental education, schoolyard habitats, and the protection and management of urban wildlife.

The Arizona Lottery invests in Arizona’s future through programs and partnerships with Arizona’s state universities, the private sector and multicultural organizations. The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

BEER STYLES PART 1

Ever since Michael Jackson published his seminal work on beer styles, The World Guide to Beer, there have been efforts to pinpoint each style and pigeon-hole beers accordingly. And, while this has been helpful to most consumers since it allows them to easily determine which types of beers they prefer to drink, it has been equally maddening because many beers don’t lend themselves to rigid classification. Given the creativity of American brewers, along with the multitude of European and Asian brewers making their versions of traditional American styles, the lines have somewhat faded. Regardless, over the next few weeks, we are going to attempt to give you our interpretation of most of the basic styles of beer. Hopefully, this helps you find your favorites and expand your beer horizons. We’ll start with the Ales. All beers are essentially ales or lagers. Ales are brewed using top fermenting yeasts at temperatures normally in the 60-75F range. These yeasts normally produce additional fruity type flavors and the higher temperatures result in fast (one week) fermentations. Most ales can be sub-classified into one of the many ale categories. In some cases (i.e. Amber Ales), categories have been created just because nothing else fits.

52

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com

Altbier Sometimes referred to as Germany’s brown ale, altbiers are fermented beers native to the North German area of Dusseldorf, brewed under cooler temperatures than most other ales (and later lagered). They are crisp and clean (more similar to lagers), and typically take on an

orange-copper color appearance with a thick head. The beer’s backbone is normally moderately malty with an assertive bitter hop profile and a dry finish. Depth and balance of both malt and hops is quite common in a classic altbier.

Amber Ale - A “catch-all” category of ales that has a broad spectrum of attributes, amber or red ales encompass those hard to classify beers with more color than an American pale ale but less than a brown ale (the amber to copper range). Because of their diversity, amber ales can have low to high malty character (although most are moderate to high with caramel representing the most common component of both aroma and flavor) and a hop level (citrus aromas and flavors common) that is anywhere from supporting and balanced to aggressive. The mouthfeel of an amber ale is heavier than an American pale ale and the roasted character nearly absent relative to an Irish red ale.

American Barleywine – Like many styles, the American Barleywine is derived from the English versions and then amped up a notch. American barleywines are among the highest strength beers available (at least 8% ABV, normally more than 10% ABV, and sometimes much higher), which is where their name is derived (like wine made from barley instead of grapes). They are typically amber to light brown in color with varying head sizes, sometimes cloudiness, and very thick bodies. Within the spectrum of

September 4th, 2013 - September 10th, 2013

beer styles, American barleywines are stronger (alcohol and malt) than strong ales. The same is generally true relative to imperial IPAs, although the latter are typically more strongly hopped. American barleywines are distinguished from their English siblings in that they are generally hoppier in aroma, flavor, and bitterness and feature American hops.

English Barleywine - Like the American barleywines, English barleywines are among the highest strength beers available (at least 8% ABV, normally more than 10% ABV, and sometimes much higher), which is where their name is derived (like wine made from barley instead of grapes). They are typically orange-amber to deep brown in color with varying head sizes, sometimes cloudiness, and very thick bodies. Within the spectrum of beer styles, English barleywines are stronger (alcohol and malt) than English strong ales, ESB’s, and brown ales. The same is generally true relative to old ales, although the latter can still be quite strong and only arbitrarily different. English barleywines are distinguished from their American siblings in that they are generally less hoppy in aroma, flavor, and bitterness and feature English hops. Wheatwine - A hybrid style between basic wheat beers and barleywines, the wheatwine (sometimes referred to as an Imperial/Double Wheat) is a relatively “new” creation with a growing number of brewers making attempts at the style. They can range from deep golden or straw to orangebrown in color and be anywhere from clear to cloudy in appearance. As their name (barleywine) implies, they are often quite strong in aroma and flavor in both alcohol and malt content. The malt base is not only rich, but includes a signifcant amount (but no more than 50%) of wheat in the profile. American wheatwines are typically balanced out with a significant amount of hops (much like an American wheat beer, tipping

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

toward a hoppy vs. malty emphasis), although as more brewers create new examples of this style, the boundaries may become broader. For now, most wheatwines are imperal American wheat beers, while most of the higher alcohol content (but less than 8% ABV) German wheat beers are still classified as hefeweizens.

Belgian Ales - Abbey Dubbel Originating from Belgian monastic brewing traditions of the Middle Ages, abbey dubbel ales are now produced by many secular commercial breweries in addition to some of the “authentic” Trappist (real Belgian monasteries) brewers. The dubbel is a double fermented ale that is dark amber to brown in color with a long lasting dense head. Dubbels often have low bitterness and reveal rich malt flavors of dark fruits, dry fruits, chocolate, nuts, and caramel. Yeast aromas and flavors are common along with the imprints of their fruity ester (banana perhaps most common) and spicey byproducts of fermentation. Like other Belgianstyled ales, candi sugar is normally used to produce a dubbel. Abbey dubbels overlap some examples of both dark Belgian ales and strong ales in maltiness, complexity, and alcohol strength, normally nestled right in between the two. Belgian Ales - Abbey Quadrupel Sometimes referred to as “Abt,” the abbey quadrupel style is a product of Belgian monastic brewing. Like other abbey ales, these beers are now produced by many secular commercial breweries in addition to some of the “authentic” Trappist (real Belgian monasteries) brewers. These beers are quadruple fermented ales that offer the richest, strongest, and most complex flavors to be found among the Belgian abbey ales. These beers are dark red-brown to brown in color, can display relatively nice heads (despite the high alcohol level), and feature full and sometimes creamy Story continued on page 54

mouthfeels. The flavors are highly imbalanced towards malty flavors (fruits such as plums, raisins, figs, even peaches are common, as well as chocolate and caramel), often contain yeasty tones (including the phenolic/ spicey byproducts of fermentation), and feature no hoppy character. The alcohol levels of these special beers are typically in the 10% and higher range. Belgian Ales - Abbey Tripel - Abbey tripels are triple fermented Belgian ales that are brewed by secular brewers all over the world in addition to some of the “authentic” Trappist (real Belgian monasteries) brewers. A style first concocted by the monks at Westmalle, tripels are golden to slight amber in color and normally display generous and showy heads and great lacing. Their aroma and flavor profiles are rich, strong, and complex, displaying yeasty, spicey (clove and/or peppery), fruity (e.g. oranges and bananas) and sometimes floral attributes. The addition of candi sugar and high carbonation keeps their bodies lighter than one might anticipate and the best examples hide the high alcohol presence quite well. While tripels can feature a sweetness, they - unlike the other abbey ales - are often hopped enough to add a somewhat balancing bitterness to the flavor. Belgian Ales - Belgian Ale - The Belgian ale category captures the regular, every day, yet distinctive ales characteristic of Belgium. These ales are the most “drinkable” of the Belgian styles (analogous to the range of ales between pale, amber, and brown of England or the U.S.) and are characterized by good balance and a relatively low alcohol content of less than 6%. The pale varieties often feature fruity, spicey, yeasty, and light malt aromas and flavors with light to medium bodies and a noticeable to prominently hopped finish. The dark varieties generally reveal more malty character, some darker fruits, along with a lower hop presence. Belgian ales can range in color from pale

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

golden to a rich amber for the pale versions, and from amber to brown-red for the dark versions. These beers can pour with huge heads, generally lace the glass well, and leave behind yeast sedimentation in the bottles from which they are poured. Belgian Ales - Belgian Strong Ale - Like regular Belgian ales, the Belgian strong ales also can range in color from pale to dark varieties. Regardless of the color, however, the Belgian strong ales are significantly stronger in alcohol content (7% and higher) and more complex than their weaker counterparts, although the good examples are not harsh. Flavors for the pale colored varieites include earthy, yeasty, fruity, peppery, sweet, and spicey attributes, while the dark colored varieties include caramel, bready, dark fruits (figs, prunes, raisins, plums), sweet, and spicey character. Belgian strong ales are also normally fermented with an addition of candi sugar. The resulting mouthfeel is typically moderate, often deceivingly lighter than their malt and alcohol content would suggest, due to the added candi sugar and high carbonation levels. The pale and golden varieties of Belgian strong ales normally differ from abbey tripels (which could be considered a subcategory of golden Belgian strong ales) in their lower bittering levels than the tripels, while the dark strong ales differ from dubbels in their malt and alcohol levels, but often overlap with the Abbey Quadrupels on both malt and alcohol levels (Abbey Quadrupels could be considered a subcategory of dark Belgian strong ales). This seems like a good start for this week. Next time, we will look at more of the Ale styles. So, your homework this week is to explore one of the styles listed above and determine what you like and don’t like about it. Keep a little notebook to help you as you try different beers so you can determine what you like and don’t like about them.

sheets and giving them more freedom to socialize and enjoy the delicious food and wine.

The Wine Event will feature tastings from some of Tucson’s top restaurants, diverse wine and beer samplings and live music. The live auction will offer exciting experiences such as a fivenight vacation to Winter Park, Colo., and the opportunity to have the UA Pep Band perform at a personal event.

Tickets to the Wine Event are available online. General tickets are $100 and VIP tickets are $150, which include exclusive tastings in the VIP reception area hosted by Vivace, valet parking, free admission to the after party and a custom 18-ounce wine glass. Four VIP tickets can be purchased as a Cork Package for $500.

Last year, the RMHC broke new ground in Tucson by offering a mobile bidding system for the silent auction. Back by popular demand, the system will send guests text message alerts when they have been outbid or have won an item, eliminating the need to hover over bid

All proceeds from the RMHC headlining fundraiser will directly impact the lives of seriously ill and injured children, annually keeping over 600 families close by their bedside throughout their care and recovery.

RMHC After Party wristbands will be available for $10, and will provide patrons with wine and beer specials all night long. Visit RMHCTucson.org for more information.

Arizona Vines & Wines is now AZ Wine Lifestyle A letter from Publisher Rhonni Moffitt Sometimes opportunities come when we least expect them. A challenge once thought to be a crisis can unveil itself as an opportunity for growth and direction. Arizona Vines & Wines is facing just such an opportunity, and we’re embracing it as a positive change for the future.

we are now in a position to embrace a new definition, one that includes Arizona, the vines, the wines and all the other delicious, entertaining, fun and special things (and people) that come along with it. Although our focus is (always has been, always will be) the Arizona wine industry, the publication has naturally morphed into a vessel to help our readers explore everything that comes along with an Arizona wine lifestyle, as evidenced by the articles we’ve contributed here to AZ Weekly. It’s the lifestyle we’ve lived ourselves and hope that we’ve inspired you to explore, too.

Arizona Vines & Wines just celebrated its fifth anniversary. What began as a small brochure has blossomed into a 116-page,quarterly publication, a popular website with Arizona’s favorite wine and food event calendar, regular wine columns in an expanding number of partner publications (including, of course, AZ Weekly) and a well-received, weekly newsletter.

ALBUM REVIEWS Sarah Neufeld’s Hero Brother is Spellbinding, Christa Wells Wants You to Feed Your Soul Arcade Fire violinist and composer Sarah Neufeld’s Hero Brother is heavenly. Ethereal and elegiac, this instrumental masterpiece conjures up images of medieval tales set in distant lands and has a beauty that is simultaneously haunting and inspiring. “Breathing Black Ground” plays like a tragic funeral dirge, Neufeld’s dizzying playing on the title track gives the song a feeling of mortal danger, and the movements within “Dirt” are nothing short of amazing. Neufeld succeeds in creating wildly diverse moods and scenarios with her prodigious playing and it is difficult not be held in the album’s sway. Hero Brother is a spellbinding piece of music that is not simply heard, but experienced as it transports you to a world only you can imagine. Such singular experiences cannot be overlooked and neither should this spectacular album. With Feed Your Soul, Christa Wells has once again delivered a powerful album which details with humanity and the struggle to find meaning in life. Wells channels a bit of Sara Bareilles on the uplifting piano pop track “This Thing is Not Going to Break You,” while the bluesy “Vanity Vanity”’s selfexplanatory title makes it one of the album’s most engaging tracks. The rock-and-soul title track is @YELLOWCABAZ WWW.YELLOWCABAZ.COM the album’s best as Wells croons with all her might for people to do something worthwhile with their lives. Wells’ ability to aptly and insightfully walk the line between faith and “the real world” makes Feed Your Soul a wondrous exploration of the sometimes beautiful mess that is life.
