“Extract” To sell or not to sell, is the question!

Review by Stan Robinson Actor Jason Bateman fine-tuned his thespian skills on the hit TV series “Arrested Development” for 3 seasons. Since that show he’s appeared in “The Break-Up” (2006), “Smokin’ Aces” (2006), “The Kingdom” (2007), “Juno” (2007), “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” (2008), “Hancock” (2008), and the recent “State of Play” (2009). His characterizations have the air of naturalness and believability that endears one to his roles. In his latest, he’s the star and

In “Extract” Joel (Jason Bateman) is the owner of a factory, which is the culmination of a lifelong dream. He’s one step away from selling his flavor extract factory to retire to the good life when a freak accident at the factory sets in motion a series of disasters that put’s his business and personal life in jeopardy. His friend, confidant, and bartender (a hilariously poignant performance by Ben Affleck, “State of Play” (2009) at the local pub, offers Joel outrageous advice along the way as he tries to contend with a milieu of personal and professional obstacles such as, has his wife become complacent in their marriage, do the employees want to take advantage of him because of the accident in the plant, and will the potential sale of the factory fall through. “Extract” has the right mixture of comedy with drama, as it heads to the answers of the ultimate questions! Starring Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Mila Kunis, J.K. Simmons, and Ben Affleck.

based on a childhood recollection of actor George Hamilton, Renée Zellweger is mesmerizing to watch as she brings to life the conflicted emotions of a mother trying to provide an accustomed to lifestyle for herself and her teenage sons. Set in 1950’s, the glamorous Anne Deveraux (Zellweger) leaves her philandering bandleader husband and takes her two teen-aged sons across country, searching for a new husband who’s worthy and capable of supporting her and her family. In the course of their travels with Los Angeles as their final destination, they take odd jobs to make enough money to continue their journey. The people they encounter, along with the comedic situations and poignant revelations, they find new levels of their own powers and resources, rather than those of others. The greatest discovery that all three make is that the key to finding happiness is to never stop looking; to be true to one’s self and those you love! Continued on page 24

As many of you know, foreign films are one of my favorite genres. They provide that view of life from a different perspective, sometimes parallel, as well as opposites to our living life in the United States. This story gives us a view of a fact that most of us never contend with, citizenship. “Lorna’s Silence” is presented in a style I call a “slice of life” film. Actress Arta Dobroshi virtually carries the film with her performance as Lorna. We join the film characters without any set-up, follow them for a while, and just as abruptly, leave their lives…

Lorna (Arta Dobroshi) is an Albanian emigrant in Belgium, with the dream of leaving her ordinary and menial job to open her own business. She needs money and permanent resident status. A fellow Albanian with a way to make money, and, get her resident status resolved approaches her. The persons involved in the elaborate plan are a drug addict who needs money for his habit, a cigarette smuggler who has to lay low outside of Russia but has the money needed, and an Italian cab driver who has intentions of becoming a big time crime lord has a hustle to meet everyone’s needs. The plan: the addict will be paid to marry Lorna so she can gain Belgian citizenship and he makes money, that marriage will end, and Lorna will then marry the cigarette smuggler to provide his reentry to the country and be well paid. And, in situations that involve human emotions, the unpredictable comes into play. “Lorna’s Silence” is in French with English subtitles. Starring Arta Dobroshi, Jérémie Renier, Fabrizio Rongione, Alban Ukaj, Morgan Marinne, Olivier Gourmet, and Anton Yakovlev. Written and directed by Jean-Pierre Dardenne & Luc Dardenne; Rated R for brief sexuality/nudity, and language; Sony Pictures Classics release; Runtime: 105 minutes.

What’s in a wine label? Lots! A wine label tells you a bit about the wine, such as its brand name (i.e. Kokopelli or Beringer), Varietal or blend name, the year the grape was harvested, and its appellation (i.e. Washington State). Don’t forget the back label with the Surgeon General’s warning and usually a short story about the winery or winemaker and a bit about the wine. This information can help you make an informed decision about the product before you make a purchase. However, it can’t tell you exactly what the wine will taste like to you. But what is really in a label? Branding! Branding is the process of gaining people’s awareness of your image (the recognizable image of your product and company). But branding is also the “personality” of your company. It is defined by what consumers think of your product after viewing and trial. How many years did it take people to change from saying “I need a Xerox of this letter”, to “I need a copy”. The worst thing for a product is for it to become a commodity, where the brand no longer differentiates the product from its competitors.

Bet You Didn’t Know Wine Trivia 1:

Wine Trivia 2:

Which of the following characteristics is an unoaked Chardonnay not likely to exhibit?

What varietal grape is used to produce Shiraz?

A – High Acidity

B – Vanilla or Caramel flavors C – minerality

D – Tropical Fruit flavors

(Answer: B – aging in oak lends the flavors of caramel and vanilla to the wine)

(Shiraz is the Australian name for the grape called Syrah in France. It has been cultivated down under since the 1830s.)

Well in today’s wine competition (on the retailer’s shelf) the wine label means a great deal. Think about how many great wines sit on the shelf and collect dust, because their label does not stimulate you to buy the product. I frequently find myself drawn to unusual names, shapes or labels on wine shelves. Brassy is in, one of my favorite names and labels – Stump Jump Shiraz an under $10 Shiraz from Australia. Not a great wine, but a really great story about a plow guard that was made in the 1800’s in Australia to skip tree stumps when plowing fields. I’m not sure what it says about the wine, but it made me try the product.

image. The new Kokopelli label was two years in the making. The goal was to create a stronger connection with Arizona, enhance the visibility of the Kokopelli icon and to create a more serious impression for potential customers. The label has been in release for only a month, but we are already receiving strong positive consumer sentiment. For the first time we have a back label, as well, to help clarify the type of wine you are purchasing. So, don’t be confused or intimidated by wine labels. Know that there is some basic information about every wine on the label, but you still have to taste the product to gain a full understanding of the wine. The best way to do this is to attend wine tasting events whenever possible, as you can taste several wines without having to commit to buying a full bottle. We offer over 45 different wines for tasting at both our Kokopelli Winery & Bistro locations in Chandler and Surprise.

This year Kokopelli Winery is celebrating its 15th Anniversary and we have released a new label (Branding image) to enhance our consumer AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Managing Debt while Maintaining Credit Losing your job is one of the worst things that could happen, especially in a period when hiring is slow. With the right tools, you can make it through an unemployment slump, keeping your credit in tact, and continuing to manage your debt. When you’re job searching, you don’t want to worry about anything else, least of all your credit and debt. Those two things could play a significant role in making your next career move. Many employers use your credit history as one of the hiring factors. If you suddenly let your credit go after losing your job, your employer could conclude that you’re not able to handle high pressure situations. Get a Temporary Source of Income As you work on getting a new job, now’s the time for some serious planning. First, find out if you’re eligible for unemployment benefits. You might even be able to file for unemployment online or over the phone. Check with your state’s unemployment office to find out if you’re eligible and whether you must apply in person. Use your emergency fund to bridge the gap between your unemployment benefits and severance pay (if any). This is the reason you spent months building a solid emergency fund. Use to help pay the bills, but use it sparingly because you don’t know how long you’ll need it.

Are You Ready For The Next Downturn?

Keep Credit and Debt Under Control Don’t make any new credit card charges. Without a reliable source of income - even unemployment benefits won’t last forever - you can’t afford to make any new credit card purchases. Resist the temptation to use your credit cards to keep your lifestyle at a pre-unemployment level. It won’t take long for your credit card balances to get out of control. Don’t take on new debt. The last thing you need in this situation is another bill. Though you might be tempted to take out a personal loan, now isn’t the time. Put off car and home purchases until after you’ve been gainfully employed for a few months and you’ve had time to rebuild your depleted emergency fund. Keep paying all your bills, even if it means making minimum payments. You can pick up with higher payments after you’ve gotten a new job. Be extra careful not to be late on any payments. Late payment fees are an unnecessary expense and make it harder to get caught up. Recognize when you need help. Ask your creditors and lenders for help as soon as you see you’ll need it. If you wait, it could be too late for them to do anything for you. Consumer credit counseling is an option if it gets hard to make your credit card payments. You can make it through a period of unemployment and maintain your credit and debt. You just have to make the most of your resources and avoid overtaxing yourself with more debt.

MONY! SECTION

Rein in Your Expenses Reassess your budget. You’ll need to decrease your expenses to compensate for the decrease in your income. Go through your budget and cut out any luxury expenses. In the beginning it might be hard to talk on your cell phone less often or go without cable television, but you’ll adjust. Cutting back will stretch your emergency fund further and keep you from relying on credit cards.

Cyprus

Next clubbing destination to unveil is Agia Napa. Located in Southeastern Cyprus, you will mostly find Brits here who are believed to belong to Compton or the Bronx. Earlier, Agia Napa had the status of a family holiday resort; however, since the last 15 years it has become one of the greatest clubbing places in the entire world. R&B, hip-hop, and urban music themes are popular here. Nonetheless, some change in this music trend has been observed as you can hear more British-skewed twist. The hottest clubs in Agia Napa include Club Abyss and the Insomnia.

GO ALL OUT BY GOING GLOBAL Are you one of the clubbing freaks? If yes, you must explore some of the best and unparalleled nightlife and clubbing destinations in the world if given the chance. Clubbing is all about music, fun, dance, socializing, and anything or everything you can imagine. Although you can find many exhilarating clubbing destinations at different places around the world, here we have brought for you the top 5 hottest places to make the most of nightlife and music. Miami

36

How about Los Angeles, California? Yep, the West Side is the Best Side! If you wish to dance around and meet up with some hot celebrities, this is the place for you for clubbing. Mingling with some of the most popular celebrities in the LA clubs is always achievable. As these clubs are jam-packed, you will have to struggle to get in. almost all the clubs are great for their music and nightlife, but Sunset Strip, the Hyde Lounge, and Les Doux are the most striking clubs in LA. industry moguls and dancers at Miami clubs to give you an experience of a lifetime. The nightlife is truly breath taking here. Clubbing in Miami is not only about dance and music, but an electrifying environment as well. Some of the best clubbing spots brimming with activity are Mansion and the Opium Garden. On the other hand, Latino vibe and Bongo’s Cuban Cafe offers somewhat a relaxing outlook.

First of all, Miami is one of the top most sought after clubbing places around the planet. Located in the heart of United States, you will find September 3rd - September 9th, 2009

Have you heard of Ibiza? Well, it is another great clubbing destination for you to check out. Ibiza lies in the heart of The Balearic Islands, Spain. The place is normally filled to the brim with the Traditionalists. This place is widely considered as the heart of music and dance. The best time of the year to enjoy clubbing here is summer. Ibiza is not only popular for its clubs, but also for the great nightlife. Some of the best clubs here are Privilege, Space, and Pacha.

Last but not least is in beautiful Zürich, Switzerland. Unlike the general perception, Zürich is not only a dry conventional banking capital. You must visit Zürich West which has now turned into a great clubbing spot with matchless nightlife. Club Q, the Lotus Club, and Langstrasse are a must see for music and fun.

The Night Owl If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE So we’re going to start getting into some fall events this week beginning with some of the Valley’s premier dining events. Plus with football season and fantasy football on the horizon, I’m going to give you some of my tops sports bar picks so for all that happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley, read on. We’re on Twitter too--@bdiggs and @myFEmy.

two to three times from taking a bite of that deliciousness. If you are having a Cardinals party you can order a Sprinkles Cardinals box which includes a dozen Cardinals cupcakes decorated with Cardinals-themed red and white dots and “GO CARDS” lettering. For more info visit sprinkles.com.

On a recent flight I was lucky enough to sit next to an interesting person. We talked about all kinds of things including Phoenix life, weather and dining. She casually mentioned that although Phoenix was nice it wasn’t much of a culinary destination. Being a fellow Night Owl and travel industry professional I politely made her aware of all the fine, casual and unique dining options the Valley has to offer, including the upcoming Phoenix Cooks and Arizona Restaurant week. I told her both events bring together some of the Valley’s most talented chefs, offer a mix of traditional and indigenous menu items during the month of September. I wish I could have given her more event details, but I rounded them up for our many Night Owl foodies. Happy Dining!

Sports Bars: Between college football, NFL football and fantasy football drafts you may be looking for a good sports bar. While there are many in the Valley, here are a few of our picks. We base our picks on a few simple things; lots of good televisions, cheap drinks, good food and nothing too fancy (it’s a sports bar after all).

Phoenix Cooks is the month’s first culinary event happening this Saturday, September 5, 2009 from 10:00am - 3:00pm at The Westin Kierland Resort and Spa. The event features cooking, wine, beer and spirit tasting classes and local executive chefs dueling against each other in cooking challenges. Guests may sample specialties from the Valley’s top restaurants and enjoy sips from boutique wineries, Alaskan Beers, spirits and Agave Tequilas, while shopping for the newest, latest, and greatest kitchen gadgets. Foodies can enjoy all of that and more for only $75 per person, advance purchase, or $90 per person at the door. www.phoenixcooks.com.

50 Happy Hours Nearby! Walk or Rail to ASU from Dorsey! Close to all the Hotspots!

Cupcakes for Cardinals: In year’s past I could make all sorts of jokes with the words ‘Arizona Cardinals’ and ‘cupcakes,’ but no more because our football team is actually good! So now I’ll just resort to telling you that Sprinkles Cupcakes is giving a free Cardinals red velvet cupcake to each Cardinals fan that comes in to the Scottsdale location on Thursday, September 10th from 9am - 7pm. To get your cupcake, all you gotta do is wear your Cardinals gear. The red velvets from Sprinkles are so good that I think I’ve fainted

Additionally, Arizona Restaurant Week, September 19 – 26, is another annual favorite for foodies and frequent diners out. During the week participating restaurants throughout Phoenix and Tucson will offer a three-course dinner menu of signature dishes for $29 per person or $58 per couple. There are so many options and restaurants participating that you should just check it out online at arizonarestaurantweek.com

AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

Zipps Sports Grill: There are multiple Zipps located throughout the Valley, and they are all pretty consistent in fun and atmosphere. Some highlights include their signature shuffleboard, their Day Drinkers Club (with hangover specials) and plenty of televisions. One thing about Zipps is their food is excellent as they have standard sports bar fare, but also some unique twists throughout the menu including their focaccia sandwiches. Santisi Brothers: They have a “Wide Wall of Sports” featuring over 60 televisions including 11 65” wide screens on a single wall. Enough said. Not really because they all have good pizzas, subs and specials. It is probably my favorite out of the ones I’ve listed here. For more information and location visit santisibrothers.com Gallagher’s Sports Grill: Gallagher’s has about six locations throughout the Valley so I’m sure you can find one not too far away from you. Some highlights of Gallagher’s include they have either (or both) horse and greyhound OTB at many locations, great HDTVs and one of the most extensive menus. Seriously, this menu spans the gamut and is about 10 pages long so if you can’t find something everyone you bring likes, then you need to de-friend the person who can’t find anything. Although they do lots of things, they all come out well. For more info and locations visit gallaghersaz.com. Hazelwoods: They have thirty one flat screen TVs, guitar hero competitions, and a monthly beer fest. Yep, it’s all good at Hazelwoods which feels like a sports bar more than just about any other. The walls are lined with trophies from softball teams, which is always an great indicator of a sports bar’s reputation, and they have a great outdoor patio. They have typical sports bar fare that gets the job done, and a nice beer selection. For more info go to hazelwoodsfirstplace.com. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

The customs of an Irishman

An Irishman walks into a bar in Dublin, orders three pints of Guinness and sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn. When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more. The bartender asks him, “You know, a pint goes flat after I draw it; it would taste better if you bought one at a time.” The Irishman replies, “Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is in America, the other in Australia, and I’m here in Dublin. When we all left home, we promised that we’d drink this way to remember the days when we drank together.” The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there. The Irishman becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way: ordering three pints and drinking them in turn. One day, he comes in and orders two pints. All the other regulars notice and fall silent. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, “I

don’t want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your great loss.” The Irishman looks confused for a moment, then a light dawns in his eye and he laughs. “Oh, no,” he says, “Everyone’s fine. I’ve just quit drinking.”

What causes people to have arthritis?

A man who smelled like a distillery flopped on a subway seat next to a priest. The man’s tie was stained, his face was plastered with red lipstick, and a half empty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began reading. After a few minutes, the disheveled guy turned to the priest and asked, “Say, father, what causes arthritis?” “Mister, it’s caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol and a contempt for your fellow man.” “Well I’ll be.” the drunk muttered, returning to his paper.

“I don’t have it father. I was just reading here that the Pope does.”

A drunk orders himself a beer A man walks into the front door of a bar. He is obviously drunk. He staggers up to the bar, seats himself on a stool, and with a belch, asks the bartender for a drink.

The bartender politely informs the man that it appears that he has already had plenty to drink--he could not be served additional liquor at this

bar but could get a cab called for him. The drunk is briefly surprised then softly scoffs, grumbles, climbs down off the bar stool, and staggers out the front door. A few minutes later, the same drunk stumbles in the side door of the bar. He wobbles up to the bar and hollers for a drink. The bartender comes over, and still politely--but more firmly refuses service to the man due to his inebriation. Again, the bartender offers to call a cab for him. The drunk looks at the bartender for a moment angrily, curses, and shows himself out the side door, all the while grumbling and shaking his head. A few minutes later, the same drunk

“Have you ever noticed, in traffic, anybody going slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac!” – George Carlin

bursts in through the back door of the bar. He plops himself up on a bar stool, gathers his wits, and belligerently orders a drink. The bartender comes over and emphatically reminds the man that he is clearly drunk, will be served no drinks, and either a cab or the police will be called immediately. The surprised drunk looks at the bartender and in hopeless anguish, cries “Man! How many bars do you work at?”

Got a Problem?...

A construction worker walks into a bar. He’s a rather large, menacing guy. He orders a beer, chugs it back, and bellows, “All you guys on this side

of the bar are a bunch of idiots!” A sudden silence descends. After a moment he asks “Anyone got a problem with that?” The silence lengthens. He then chugs back another beer and growls, “And all you guys on the other side of the bar are all scum!” Once again, the bar is silent. He looks around belligerently and roars, “Anyone got a problem with that?” A lone man gets up from his stool unsteadily and starts to walk towards the man.

The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologized. “I’m very sorry. I didn’t mean to come on so strong. How long did you have arthritis?”

“You got a problem, buddy?” “Oh no; I’m just on the wrong side of the bar.”

TAILGATING TIPS FOR UNIQUE FOOTBALL FUN With a brand new season of college and professional football near, keep in mind these helpful hints to spicing up your pre-game fun. Check the Weather Report: Tailgating is an outdoor sport, and you need to pack and plan food accordingly. Don’t barbecue in heat, don’t do sandwiches in the cold. Keep it simple! The less time you spend cooking, the more time you spend partying! Pre-grill hot dogs, meats, or bratwurst, and put them in a thermos of boiling water. They stay hot for hours, and with a bun and a bottle of mustard & relish – they’re as good as anything you will find in the stadium.

(5th and Mill in Downtown Tempe)

Music Makes it a party—But not too loud! Use the car Stereo to play popular cd’s of upbeat, pre-game classical rock. But remember, you want people to be able to talk and socialize, so keep the volume under control. Shade/Shelter—Whether it’s Sunny or Rainy, providing cover is a good idea. A simple way to do this is to open the trunk, stick a beach umbrella into the ground about three feet from the rear bumper and drape a clean plastic tarp from the trunk lid and over the umbrella. Hold the Milk! Don’t serve anything creamy or milk-based at the tailgate. Potato Salads and Slaws may be easy, but they also can spoil and make people sick. Seating, Seating, Seating. Those cute girls that are looking at the party from across the lot? They might come over if there was somewhere to SIT! Whether the seating is blankets or folding chairs, bring extra! The more the merrier!

BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW

Not Just Chips!--- Sure, chips never fail, but they’re only a SIDE dish. At the least, plan to do hot dogs or sandwiches with the chips

Beyond Beer. Most people wouldn’t consider it a tailgate without a cold beer or two, but be responsible and considerate, offer tasty nonalcoholic choices other than cola. Sodas in flavors like Strawberry or Kiwi add a festive air to the proceedings. Clean Up: The one thing everyone forgets, and regrets the forgetting: Garbage bags! Bring the whole box, makes for easy clean up, and throw in a couple of rolls of paper towels. Party’s need Party Favors! Stop at the party store for cheap, fun decorations and novelties! Go a little further and

GOLF! SECTION

You will notice that your driver is longer than any of the other clubs in your bag. Since you are hitting the ball off a tee, why should it be longer? The reason is that the extra length allows you to get the head of the club moving faster when it makes contact with the ball. So the longest drivers in golf have the potential to hit the ball the furthest.

Tee Off This Fall To Make Wishes Come True MLB Great Luis Gonzalez to host the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona 9th annual Golf Classic at Whirlwind Golf Club The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona along with MLB great Luis Gonzalez will host the 2009 Golf Classic, Nov. 23 at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler. Be among an elite group of 260 players to participate in this event, which will help make wishes come true for children facing life-threatening illnesses. Registration for the event begins at 8:00 a.m. and the golfers tee off at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. Lunch will be served at multiple grill stations and the day of golf ends with and an exciting silent auction and cocktail reception. Whirlwind Golf Club, located at 5594 W. Wild Horse Pass Blvd is a unique Southwest golf experience surrounded by spectacular mountains and breath-taking scenery. The Make-A-Wish Foundation hopes

to raise more than $130,000 at this year’s Golf Classic, which will be enough to grant the wishes of 17 Arizona children. Sponsorships, foursomes and playing spots are available.

In golf swing dynamics, the longer the shaft, the faster the head is going. There is a limit to the effectiveness of lengthening the shaft, however. The

longer the shaft, the harder it is for you to hit the ball with the very center of the club face, also called the sweet spot. If you miss the sweet spot even by a fraction of an inch, it will cost you distance. Therefore, the long shaft has potential to go further, but it cannot always deliver. The perfect shaft length for you is the longest one that allows you to consistently hit the sweet spot. This will give you a long, confident, predictable drive which is the perfect combination to add to your arsenal.

Longer Golf Shafts

Go Bigger and Better with Power and Precision Everyone wants the bragging rights of hitting the longest tee shot. It’s a rewarding accomplishment, but takes the longest golf drivers to get the job done. And even better, a long drive can lower your score by making your second shot easier. A long drive may allow you to get on the green in two shots on some par fives. This is a huge advantage when you’re putting, while everyone else is still chipping. So, alot of what makes for the best long golf drivers is that it feels right when you swing it. There are a variety of factors that affect the feel of the club. One is the length of the shaft.

Naked Dave’s Local Distortion

and drummer Mike Myers, this band has all the key ingredients to be a successful band.

The Naked Truth:

Their first album “... Of The World” (produced and arranged by multiGrammy Award Winner / KC and the Sunshine Band co-founder, Richard Finch) is available at www.nevadatheband.com.

Once again, this was an exceptional weekend in the local music scene. On Friday the 28th, 68 Guns played the entire night at the local watering hole O’Kelly’s. And just to let you know, O’Kelly’s happens to have some of the BEST bar food I have ever had. 68 Guns is a cover band that seems to know every song ever written. They always seem to have the dance floor packed, by some of the hottest women in the valley. With Falco (vocals), Thor (guitar), Zulu, (bass), and Rickman (drums), they cover mostly 80’s rock/metal, and do it well. 68 Guns will be opening up for the Bullet Boys on Sept. 5th, at The Platinum Room at the Skye in Phoenix. The only thing at plagues me about this band, is how they attract all the hot ladies. LOL! Just kidding, they are a great group of guys to see and hang out with.

Later that night at Club Red, the state of Nevada sent us an all original band called Nevada. This Dave Matthews meets Oasis band surprised the hell of me. Opening up for Marcie’s Playground, these guys, (and gal) where very entertaining. With vocalist/guitar player Zak Domogalla, guitarist Katie Harrington (a real cutie!), bassist Bob-O LaBerta,

September 3rd - September 9th, 2009

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

No stranger to creating successful music projects, Domogalla released two albums (“Act II” and “Anywhere’s Better than Here”) through his former band, “Ode to Nothing,” which he founded in late 2005. Both albums received substantial media attention (both TV and radio) in Nevada, California, Montana, New York, England and Australia - with store sales as far away as France! With a gift for writing songs which convey a sense of hope in a world of hopelessness, Domogalla believes his latest creations --- both “Nevada” and their debut album, “... Of the World” --- intimately touches on the sensitivity and passion embedded in his musical soul: Zak has said “My goal as an artist is to connect with people --- if even one person gets my message or feels my music, then it’s totally worth it!”

On Saturday the 29th, the Atomic Punks once again proved, that they are indeed the #1 tribute band in the nation. Headlining at The Marquee, with opening tribute bands such as Grind (Alice and Chains), and Voodoo (Godsmack), this was a night of great tunes. The Atomic Punks, if you don’t know are a David Lee Roth era Van Halen tribute band. And NO ONE does VH like these guys! Once fronted by Michael Starr of Steel Panther, The Atomic Punks have now brought in new comer Ricky M’coy to take over the helm. I asked bassist

Formed in 1994, the Atomic Punks have performed well over 2000 shows in places like Hollywood, Anaheim, San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Seattle, Denver, Honolulu, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Columbus, Cleveland, Indianapolis, EL Paso, Dallas, Austin, Salt Lake City, EL Paso, Ft.Lauderdale, Sacramento, Reno, Lake Tahoe, Aspen, Kansas City and most importantly Pasadena, CA. where Van Halen started their meteoric rise to stardom. Globally know as the Worlds “Greatest” tribute to David Lee Roth era Van Halen, the Atomic Punks have an International following that continues to grow every year. Van Halen themselves have endorsed the Atomic Punks! In his 1997 auto-biography “Crazy from the Heat,” former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth referred to the Atomic Punks as “The best tribute to Van Halen ever!” VH bassist Michael Antony has even played a few sets with these guys. Top that!

Also on Saturday night at Club Red was Vegas’ own KREEP, a hardcore metal band whose vocalist Bret Pirozzi said on stage, “It time to stand the “Blank” up, cause this ain’t no poetry reading!” This band full of heavy melodic guitar riffs, and in your face cookie monster vocals, also has former White Zombie drummer, Ivan de Prume. Finishing out the line-up is lead guitarist Carmine

D’Amico, rhythm guitarist Brian Jackson, and bassist Alan Vine. Brett’s New York roots and previous experience as a member of the bands, Bile and Green Jell-O, propelled him to want to write songs that expressed his character and the struggles he’s been through. Brett began to write songs that were about things happening in life and in the process realized that these issues affected a lot of people in society today. That’s the heart of KREEP. So I guess it’s not true; that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, cause if good things happen in Vegas, they don’t stay in Vegas! Naked Dave’s Gear Pick of the Week:

This week gear pick is the Warwick Double $$ Bass. The Warwick Corvette $$ Double Buck bass guitar is similar to the other Corvette models, but distinguishes itself with unique electronics. It features 2 powerful MEC humbuckers nestled closely in the center position, completely covering the legendary sweet-spot that so many basses miss completely. This configuration gives it a powerful, solid tone with depth and clarity. To make it versatile, 2 mini 3-way switches let you choose humbucker, single-coil, and parallel or series operation. The passive pickups are matched to an MEC 2-band active preamp, making it a true passive/active hybrid. The Double Buck features a select swamp ash body, an ovangkol neck, bell brass frets, high-quality hardware, and natural or transparent color oil finishes. Warwick Corvette $$ Double Buck 4-String Bass Features are, Select swamp ash body, Corvette body shape, Ovangkol neck, Dual MEC humbuckers, 3-way coil tap switches for humcancelling, single coil, or parallel/series pickup operation, Bell brass frets, and High-quality components. This bass sells for about $1800.00 dollars.

The song is #5 on Billboard’s Club Singles Chart and the Greatest Gainer for the second week in a row. If “Celebration” reaches #1 on Billboard’s Club Single Chart, it would be Madonna’s 40th!!!! #1 Club single – the most of any artist in the history of the Billboard Club Singles Chart. On the international front so far, the “Celebration” single is already #1 in Italy and Holland, #2 in Japan and is Top 5 airplay in every other major market. Another newly recorded song, “Revolver” featuring Lil Wayne is also included on the “Celebration” CD. AT HOME, IN THE OFFICE OR ON THE RUN With our busy lives and never ending work and family commitments, it’s hard for any of us to find time to exercise, get to the gym or even afford to go on a diet with the high price of healthy food. So, what’s a busy person to do? Whether at home, in a hotel, sitting at your desk or even on an airplane, there are plenty of simple exercises you can do to feel good and stay fit. With the winter months approaching, it’s important to have easy and convenient health and fitness options in your back pocket. Seated Total Body Strength This total body workout targets the upper and lower body with a variety of exercises that can be done while seated. For some lower body exercises, you can add ankle weights for more intensity. The upper body exercises use dumbbells and/or resistance bands for intensity. You can make the workout harder by sitting on an unstable surface, such as an exercise ball.

Lift the right foot and tap the toes on top of the medicine ball. Take it back down and tap with the left foot. Continue tapping the ball, alternating feet, as fast as you can repeating for 16-20 reps.

Seated Slides-Back & Forth Sit tall and place paper plates under each foot. Push onto the right plate and slide the foot forward. Slide the foot back, pressing onto the plate to activate the hamstrings while sliding the left foot forward. Continue alternating for 16 reps (one rep includes both right and left slides).

Chest Squeeze with Med Ball Sit on a ball or chair, back straight and abs in. Hold a medicine ball (or any other type of ball) at chest level and squeeze the ball to contract the chest. While continuing to squeeze the ball, slowly push the ball out in front of you at chest level until elbows are almost straight. Continuing the pressure with your hands, bend the elbows and pull the ball back to chest. Repeat for 16 reps.

Seated Outer Thigh Sit tall in the chair and tie a band around the mid-thighs. Step the right foot out to the side, touch lightly and then bring it back in, focusing on the outer thigh. Repeat, stepping out with the left foot and repeat for a total of 16 reps (one rep includes both the right and left taps). Leg Extensions Sit tall with feet flat on the floor and knees together. Squeeze the quads to straighten the right leg, foot flexed. Bend the knee to lower the foot, lightly touching the floor. Repeat for 20 reps and switch sides. Add ankle weights for more intensity if desired.

Equipment Needed A chair, resistant band, medicine ball and a few weighted dumbbells. How To Choose a chair that allows you to keep your knees at 90 degrees when

seated. Sit up tall during each exercise and use your abs to maintain good posture. Perform each exercise for 1 set of 16 repetitions. After you’re familiar with the moves and feel ready, increase to 2 or more sets Do this workout 2-3 non-consecutive days a week, taking at least one day of rest between workouts. For best results, combine this workout with regular cardio and a healthy, lowcalorie diet.

Inner Thigh Squeeze While seated with good posture, place a ball between your knees. Squeeze the ball by contracting the inner thighs and release slightly-don’t release all the way--and repeat for 16 reps.

Seated Lateral Raise Sit with good posture holding lightmedium dumbbells at your sides. Keeping the elbows slightly bent and wrists straight, lift the arms up to shoulder level (palms face the floor). Lower back down and repeat for 16 reps.

Bicep Curls Sit and hold light to medium dumbbells. Curl the weight up toward your shoulder and release. Avoid swinging the weights and keep the abs engaged. Repeat for 16 reps. Triceps Extensions with Bands Sit with good posture holding a band out in front of you with elbows bent out to the sides at shoulder level, palms facing the floor--the distance of your hands will determine the intensity. While keeping the left hand in place, straighten the right arm out to the side until it’s parallel to the floor, squeezing the back of the arm. Move back to start and repeat for 16 reps before switching sides.

Overhead Press Sit with good posture holding lightmedium dumbbells in both hands. Begin the move with arms bent to 90 degrees, weights next to the ears (arms should look like a goal post). Press the weights overhead and lower back down, repeating for 16 reps. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Seated Rotation for Abs Sit with good posture holding a medium dumbbell in front of chest. Keeping the abs contracted, rotate the torso to the right while keeping the hips and legs facing forward. Contract abs to bring the weight back to center and then rotate to the left. Repeat for 12 reps. September 3rd - September 9th, 2009

Toyota Highlander Four Cylinder

radiator, bigger fan, oil coolers and a potent 150 amp alternator. For $220, that’s some good stuff at a good price, towing or not. With other upgrades, we hit $29,599. No, the Highlander isn’t exciting, but it’s a solid vehicle that’s pleasant to drive and will be running long after the warranty is gone.

Picture and article by Chad Haire

Some auto writers have said the Toyota Highlander isn’t very exciting to drive. Well, in some ways, they are correct. No wild styling, hood scoops or bazaar looks here. But it has plenty of good features, as we found out. The Highlander is offered with a powerful V-6 rated at 270 horsepower. In the interest of fuel economy, we picked the base four-cylinder engine, which is rated at 20-27 mpg. It had enough pulling ability for a short camping trip. Driving is very pleasant. The ride is comfortable, the steering has good feel, handling is balanced, the brake pedal has a nice firm feel and highway cruising is quiet and stable. The cabin has plenty of excellent materials and workmanship and all controls are simple to use. The seats are very comfortable. Off-road ability is limited as this is more of a car than a truck and ground clearance is moderate. Still, I was able to go on the back forest roads as long as the rocks were not too big. The Highlander is offered with all-wheel drive for better traction on sandy roads, but I didn’t get it. The base Highlander starts at $25,705. It is well-equipped at this price, with air, power everything and a good stereo. One option I liked was the trailer tow pack. Yes, it’s crazy to tow something with this 4-cylinder engine, for that you need the V-6. Still, the tow pack includes bigger
