Harvest Season This time of year grapes in Arizona and across the country are reaching maturity and need to be harvested, crushed, pressed, and pumped into fermentation tanks. The journey from vineyard to grocer’s shelf can take a few months to several years. Each step along the way the winemaker is making decisions that will affect your impression of their finished wines. One thing most people don’t realize is that a winemaker has one opportunity a year to determine the future of his/her wine. This is tough enough, but even more difficult is the fact that the winemaker makes all these decisions in a very short window of time, typically as little as one month from the first varietal harvested and processed to the last. On the other hand, a brew-master produces beer daily or weekly and can adjust the flavor, depth and profile of the beer that frequently. Once the wine is fermented, which takes a couple weeks to over a month, the winemaker has to decide if this is a wine deserving of oak aging or

a product that should be filtered and blended into a table wine. The winemaker also has to decide which type of oak they will use to age the wine. Nowadays the winemaker has many choices of oak from French to American oak, low to high toast, barrels or staves to place in storage tanks. Whatever the winemaker decides will have an impact on the wine for the rest of its life. An example of a great wine just preparing to make an appearance to the public is the new Kokopelli 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine from its inception was designed to be a beef friendly, long finishing Cabernet. This 2008 Cabernet was aged in French Oak of a medium toast and offers a solid French oak nose with notes of caramel, dried cherries and a long deep finish. This wine will reach the market in late September and will change people’s impression of Kokopelli wines forever. Scantily clad sorority girls being stalked in their own home, in the shower and while partying is not a new concept. In fact, this is a remake of The House on Sorority Row which was released in early 1983.

Sorority Row manages to use the campy storyline of 70’s and 80’s cheerleader slasher flicks with the plot of I Know What You Did Last Summer with the whodunit aspect found in Scream and subsequent sequels to produce an entertaining thriller. While the movie pokes along at a snail’s pace at times, and takes a while to get going, there is enough eye candy and edge of your seat moments to make up for the handful of dull scenes. Sorority Row is far from the best horror film ever made, but it was a fun way to pass an hour and forty minutes. Plus, how could you not like a movie that features the talented acting skills of Audrina Patridge from The Hills? It’s just too bad she’s killed early on and doesn’t make it past the first half an hour of the film.

Matt Damon’s portrayal of Jason Bourne in three films established him as an in-depth action actor with the films becoming my all time favorites for suspense thrillers. While working with Matt Damon on the Ocean movies, Steve Soderbergh became aware of his wide range as an actor and says that Matt Damon was his first and only choice for the role of the exceptionally bright, bipolar whistleblower in “The Informant”…

Director Steven Soderbergh gained public awareness with his direction of Julia Roberts to a best actress Oscar® for “Erin Brockovich” (2000) and the same year won a best director Oscar® for “Traffic”! The primary factor, his directorial talent of subliminally guiding the story through strong character nuances as the major elements are unfolding. Directing the three Ocean movies (Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Ocean’s Twelve (2004), and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007) followed, with Matt Damon as one of the stars.

Based on the true story and Kurt Eichenwald’s 2000 book, the informant is Mark Whitacre (Matt Damon). He’s a high level executive at ADM (Archer Daniels Midland) headquartered in Illinois. Bright, with a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry and on the fast track, Whitacre has apparitions of rising to the top by being the ‘last man standing’. His plan, expose the company’s international price fixing

with a narrative that’s not used in the usual way of adding details or providing additional insight. In this movie, the narrative is Whitacre’s thoughts, and after a few moments in, as he goes about his life, we realize those thoughts relate directly to his usual activities. Some thoughts have no relationship at all to the reality, only to what he perceives it to be. At other times, they have no relationship at all to any of the events in his life. At the helm, Steven Soderbergh carefully orchestrates the ingredients to present an intriguing story, while Matt Damon, with an extra 30 pounds he put on for the role, completely sheds any similarities to any of his past performances. Student Chefs from The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Phoenix Compete on Iron Chef America -- Broadcast Scheduled Sept. 27 on Food Network --

Three students from The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Phoenix have been invited to compete on Food Network’s popular series Iron Chef America. This challenge marks the first time in the show’s history that culinary students have been invited to compete in kitchen stadium. The episode premieres on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and features the students battling against Iron Chef Michael Symon. Student challengers include Katelyn Remick, 21, who is expected to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts in September 2009; Julie Fiedler, 20, a second year Culinary Management student; and Tyler Burke, 24, a third year Culinary Arts student. “When you grow up watching

Iron Chef like I did, and somebody tells you you’re not just going to the show, you are actually competing on the show, that is a real thrill,” Remick said. “It’s absolutely a dream come true.” “This is a huge opportunity for the team, our school, and especially for me as a professional,” Burke said. “I want to make every person that’s taken a part in shaping me as a chef more than proud.” “I’ve participated in competitions before but nothing this extraordinary, so I feel extremely grateful for being selected,” Fiedler said. This week, we have some great dining news, the best places to find out what’s going down in downtown Phoenix and much more. I know it seems extravagant in this economy, even for a Night Owl, but I was very frugal in my outings. For instance, I met my girls for a birthday celebration at St. Francis, a new restaurant off Camelback in Phoenix, and we all paired up to share entrees. I split a sushi dinner at Hana Japanese Eatery, I grabbed a couple of drinks at Sidebar with friends before heading over to enjoy super cheap cocktails and underground hip-hop at Hidden House. You see, I refuse to let my social life go on recession, and I know enjoying myself, even sparingly, helps the local and national economy. Iron Chef in the Desert: Who doesn’t love Iron Chef? There’s a strange irony to this recession: new grads, the unemployed, and jittery workers barely hanging on to their jobs worry too much about finding secure employment. They don’t realize that finding your own work as a self-employed mercenary may actually be safer (and more lucrative) than depending on the self-serving middleman known as “your boss.” The biggest obstacle preventing people from reaching their entrepreneurial potential is not knowing what kind of work to pursue as free agents/ business owners. Some just don’t know what they’re good at. This seems an oddly defeatist attitude considering that these same people are simultaneously hoping and expecting that a high-paying employer will scoop them up. If you’re prepared to create your own niche, the opportunities for start-ups are better than ever. Old markets once dominated by big business are fracturing into never-ending niches, in what I call the Kraft Dinner syndrome. For many, while growing up no one ate pasta. Who needed it when you had those shiny orange noodles coated with powdered cheese? Today’s consumers demand more sophisticated foods, whether it’s capellini, fusilli or fettucine. And we top them with a gourmet shop worth of spe-

cialsauces. Even Kraft Canada now produces more than a dozen forms of mac and cheese — most recently in convenient cracker form. That’s how a single product has fractured into multiple markets. Ideas are everywhere. Science is churning out new products from drugs to smartphones; international travel is creating greater demand for exotic products; changing demographics are fostering lucrative minimarkets in health, entertainment, publishing and travel.

The Dog Days of Summer Golf Classic will be held on Friday, September 25, 2009 at the Ocotillo Golf Resort at 3751 S. Clubhouse Drive in Chandler, Arizona. Teeing off with a shotgun start at 7:30AM, the event will include a post-tournament luncheon, a silent auction and a raffle following the golf game. Naked Dave’s Local Distortion The Naked Truth In today’s society it never fails, you get the good with the bad. When Guns N Roses hit the scene, they gave us Slash; however along with him we got Axle. When you get Taylor Swift, then along comes Kanye West. No matter what genre of music it is, there are always douche bags involved. The same can be said for their fans. When God gave us Dimebag and John Lennon, we got Nathan Gale and Mark David Chapman. I have never understood this; I wish someone could explain this to me. The same can be said about Punk Music fans. DO NOT misunderstand me, I love Punk. I love what it stands for, and what it has to say. BUT! Why do some of their fans have to be such Jack-asses? Punk is some of the most outspoken music there is, and their artists are some of the biggest social advocates to date. But some people take being a fan to far. On Saturday the 12th, I went to enjoy a night of good old fashion Punk Rock. Their were three excellent bands; however that was cut short by dumbass fans. After moshing began, security had to step in, for the safety of the underage fans. That’s when all hell broke loose; security was called fascist pigs, and bottles thrown. What could have been a killer night in the local scene, ended up being a drag. Well enough of the rant, I did get to see a couple of great bands. Drunk on Tuesday, a Ramones meets Bowling for Soup band. Good times were had watching these guys, they were energetic, fun to watch, and tight. With Chucker (guitar/vocals), Mikey (guitar/ vocals), Nick, (drums),and Ryan (bass/ vocals) and songs like,

Crime Scene, I Know I Said, and Dependent on Tylenol, these guys are a good night out.

My fav of the night however was Automatic Self Destruct. These guys were “The Shiz” Funny as hell on stage, with a bass player that was as wild as they come. I totally enjoyed the show to no end. I would like to mention their cover of The Dead Kennedy’s “California Uber Alles.” Changing it to “Arizona Uber Alles”, the stage was packed with fans singing along with them. They also did a cover of “Bloodstains” that was cool. Not leaving out there originals, like Blow Sh*t Up, and others, these guys left me wanting, more and more. With GW Aguilar (Guitar/ Vocals), Kid Fay (Drums/Vocals), Johnny Black, (Guitar/Vocals), and J Grimm – (Bass/Vocals). OH! and to top it off Mr. Grimm, at the end of the show just throws his Fender Deluxe to the floor. Now that’s Rock n Roll or should I say Punk! Founded in late 2008, ASD has taken the punk rock community by storm. The music is honest, fast and full of righteous indignation. Their live shows have proven to be unpredictable and chaotic but always fun. They think of themselves as the nicest assholes that you’ll ever meet. DEMAND THEM!!! As for the LA band DI (The Headliner of the night), that’s when all the crap started. I only got to see two songs,

Album opener “Foxy & Free” is average followed by the autobiographical “Outer Space”. “Pain In The Neck” simply has no chorus but at least has a good guitar solo. “Fox On The Run” originally by 70’s glamsters Sweet fits in nicely and is one of, if not ‘the’ album’s best tracks. As the album progresses, it begins to show less songwriting strength. “A Little Below The Angels” is Frehley’s own tale of excess and recovery but honestly would have fit better as liner notes in the album. With Ace’s monotone vocal, it simply comes off as E R E Crather Ngoofy OR O Z D CK than sincere as he intended. Better lyrics would have helped too.

After a 20 year wait since 1989’s Trouble Walkin’, KISS’ original lead guitarist returns with a new album. The question most people want to know is whether it’s worth the wait. One thing is certain, Ace is best when he’s part of a team, contributing his solos and occasional tracks that he sings. On his own, he is just not a force to be reckoned with, as when he was a part of KISS. Musically, it should satisfy most… but lyrically and vocally, he leaves a lot to be desired.

Album closer “Fractured Quantum” continues the “Fractured Mirror” series started on his 1978 solo album and is a nice piece. The album also comes in a funky cardboard fold open digipack that folds up into a pyramid of sorts. Problem is… the CD sits in the bottom without a tray and gets slightly scuffed up just rolling around in the box. Next time Ace, stick to the standard jewel case. Like his other solo releases, this contains a few good tracks, some decent ones and a few others where one has to wonder why it ended up on there either for musical direction or lack of songwriting skill. Next time, he should consider a co-writer or using songs like he did for his only charting hit “New York Groove” back in 1978. It may give him some much needed inspiration. – Stephen Wilkinson

Mini Cooper Clubman “S”

Picture and Review by Chad Haire The Mini Cooper has been a successful seller for the BMW organization, with sales actually increasing . . . unusual in today’s sour economy. Now we get the Clubman model. It’s a stretched version with a rear cargo area and has not only two rear doors, but also a second door on the passenger side, five in all. While it’s nice to have that extra rear space, it’s not that much; enough for about five bags of groceries. To get more, you can fold the rear seat. The drawback? The door frame does block rear vision, but hey, it looks cool, right? Sort of like the interior that looks cool, but has a nightmare of illogical buttons and switches to deal with. But you get used to it. Why be like everybody else? When it comes to performance, there is more than looks here. The turbo engine is very quick, yet delivers 26-34 mpg. The steering and brakes have precise feel. The handling is that of a true sports machine.

But while we get go-cart handling, Coopers equipped with the run-flat tires like I had will have a stiff go-cart ride. I suggest conventional tires with a spare in the rear cargo hold if you need more comfort. One option we had was the long “panorama” sun roof that provides a nice huge view of the sky. Unfortunately, it’s clear glass allows the sun to roast the interior on a hot day. A sliding screen provides little relief. Great for Alaska, but Arizona owners will have to dark tint, which defeats the purpose. At $1,000 extra, you might want to pass. The base price of a Clubman turbo starts at $23,700. It includes all we need and is a bargain. But with panorama roof, special paint, racing stripes, alloy wheels, xenon headlights, radar distance warning, cargo net, rear spoiler and other items, we hit $31,450.
