A Great Place To Go Before or After The Show!

Broadway’s longest running musical, “The Phantom of the Opera,” by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is still running today. It has run more than 20 years as of 2009. Francisco Goya is buried without his head. He died in France, was buried there, but was later moved back to Spain and laid to rest in a church under one of his frescos. In the process of moving the body, Goya’s head was stolen and has never been found.

Oliver! presented by Theater Works

Peoria Center for the Performing Arts Thursday – Friday 7pm Saturday 1:30pm & 7pm Sunday 1:30pm Thru Oct. 4, 2009 Based on the classic Charles Dickens novel, Oliver! follows the title character from the toils of a workhouse through the tougher streets of London, and finally to the safe arms of his long lost family. Along the way, he meets a host of exciting, dancing, and singing characters! The classic songs include ‘Food, Glorious Food,’ ‘Where is Love?’ and ‘Consider Yourself’ and will delight audiences of all ages.

Rebel Without a Cause presented by Central Community Theatre

Friday – Saturday 8pm Sunday 4pm Saturday (10/3) 2pm Thru Oct. 4, 2009 Jim Stark is the new kid in town. Jimmy can’t help but get into trouble, a problem that has forced his appearanceconscious parents to move from one town to another. Here he hopes to find the love he doesn’t get from his middle-class family. After unsuccessfully trying to sort things out with his weak-willed father, Jimmy runs off into the night. He links up with fellow “lost souls” Judy and Plato, hiding out in an abandoned palatial home and enacting the roles of father, mother, and son. For the first time, these three have found kindred spirits -- but the adults and kids who have made their lives miserable haven’t given up yet, leading to tragedy. Based on the classic landmark film featuring James Dean.

The Comedy of Errors presented by Southwest Shakespeare Company

Mesa Arts Center Theater Thursday - Saturday 7:30pm Sunday 3pm This is Shakespeare’s farcical onslaught of mistaken identities, fateful romance and family reunions. Not one, but two sets of long-separated twins form the springboard to much confusion, slapstick, and surprise as a family that once was lost, but now is found in a strange, possibly haunted, and madly wonderful land!

Blackbird presented by Stray Cat Theatre

Tempe Performing Arts Center Thursday – Saturday 8pm Sunday 2pm Thru Oct. 10, 2009 One of the more talked-about and controversial plays of the past decade, David Harrower’s Blackbird has been featured on many American and London critics’ top 10 lists and received the 2007 Olivier Award for Best New Play. Based on a true story, this powerful, volatile piece begins when Una shows up unexpectedly at the office of Ray, forcing Ray to come to terms with the effects of their past relationship. Una pulls him into a brutal encounter that is gripping, surprising and utterly unforgettable. How better to kick off a season Stray Cat style than with a pull-no-punches evening of theatre you aren’t soon to forget?

WINE! SECTION

They all seem to heard to branded restaurants – I mean what is the difference between TGIF, Applebee’s, Chili’s, etc., etc. If marketing dollars made food taste better these chains would have to have waiters in tuxedos. But instead they serve freezerriddled food. I guess the point of all this is that what we all seem to want is – for somebody else to tell us what we should have. When did this begin to our culture? I don’t know, I believe with the dawn of fast food and our now frenzied life style where we can now be hounded non-stop by electronic means. So, what is my point? You deserve a break today, so get up and get away from being stuck in BRAND MODE!

Get in my belly….

Dennis Minchella, President Kokopelli Winery Trivia: Q: What process did chemist JeanAntoine Chaptal invent that is legal if France and Germany? A: Chaptalization, grape juice or sugar added to wine during fermentation, allowing the wine to develop higher alcohol levels. Do you ever find yourself thinking wouldn’t it be great if buying wine was as simple as buying a coffee at Starbuck’s? No, no a thousand times no!

8

Do you buy coffee brand-x because it gives you status, defines your individuality or simply because everybody

you know buys it there? Ask yourself why you buy coffee in the first place – BECAUSE IT HAS CAFFIENE! Now if all you need is caffeine shouldn’t you just buy it at the place where it is the cheapest? I mean in these financially troubling times aren’t we all trying to save a buck? Can you argue that your coffee is the best tasting and that is why you buy it, where you do? If that is the case then we should all be buying our coffee from a burger stand (well I guess they have 10,000 or more of them). Because a burger company won Consumer’s Report’s best cup of coffee contest not the coffee shop with the cool logo. American’s have long defined themselves as “adventurers and individualists”, but of recent times where do we find the adventurous individual?

September 24th - September 30th, 2009 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Dine at a local restaurant in your community that does not have a logo you know even with a mostly burned out sign. When it comes to wine, don’t feel frazzled or frustrated. Try some things that you normally wouldn’t. If you can’t give up Chardonnay, then at least go to a wine tasting and try several different types of Chardonnay. You might be pleased to find out that some wine other than “your brand” is really good. Then again, you may just fall back to your “Brand Haze”. Either way at least you can say you stepped outside your comfort zone (adventurous) and you found out what worked best for you (individual). Bon Appetite.

Are You Smarter Than A Nobel Prize Winner? Let’s face it, most of us think we’re pretty well read and pretty darn smart. But not too many of us have won a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, and that is why I want to introduce you to Dr. Otto Warburg.

Dr. Otto Warburg 1931 Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Warburg won the 1931 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work during the 1920s on the then relatively unknown and mysterious disease called cancer. He successfully identified the root cause of cancer, and discovered that cancer cells, unlike normal cells, thrive in an anaerobic, acidic state rather than an oxygen rich, high pH environment. In fact, he discovered that cancer cannot grow in a high alkaline, oxygen rich environment at all. Think about this for a minute. This means we have known what causes cancer for over 78 years, but if this is true, why don’t we learn this fact in every high school biology class in America? Why don’t the cancer treatment centers, oncologists or cancer related charities shout this knowl-

edge from the rooftops? Why isn’t there a warning from the Surgeon General on every bottle or can of soft drinks or sports drinks sold in America? They are extremely acidic, after all, and can cause great damage to humans by helping to create an extremely acidic environment inside the body. And why isn’t there anything being done to tell every American to alkalize their body before it is too late? The good news is that there IS something being done to spread this news, and even more importantly, I have recently discovered an incredible way to achieve an alkaline balanced body that is simple, fast, and easy!

Change Your Water and Change Your Life! Can it really be as easy to create an alkaline balanced body as drinking a different kind of water every day? Yes! But only if it is the right kind of water, made fresh in your own kitchen every day from your very own powerful water processing machine.

Micro-Clustered for Maximum Absorption and Hydration After passing through one of these amazing machines, your water will be micro-clustered, which means it is the most effective water in the world when it comes to hydrating each and every one of the approximately 70 Trillion cells in your body. The vast majority of Americans are chronically dehydrated, which leads to a myriad of health challenges and concerns.

Every person I know wants to because of the extremely acidic lead a healthy, happy, active life, conditions of our bodies. but many people simply aren’t Alkalize or Die! “Fame”, director Kevin Tancharoen presents an old theme for the “now” generation! By Stan Robinson

Names like “re-make”, “reinventing”, or “re-telling” are used for movies made some time ago with the main theme being presented again. The down side is that most want to compare the newer version to the old and automatically bring

With the release of the latest vision of “Fame”, I wondered what is it like for the youths of today, who have those same aspirations of the 80’s, trying to pursue their dreams. The young first time director of a feature film at age 22, Kevin Tancharoen, confirmed my thought of ‘what’s it like now’. Barely 10 years old when the 1980’s “Fame” was released, Kevin shared with me why he was compelled to present this vision. “Everything around us has changed, from the computer sciences to very world we all live in” say’s Kevin, “This generation is presented with challenges that reflect society today, and I wanted to tell the stories of young people today, who want to, who have to, pursue their dreams”. Curious, and yes admittedly hesitant of Kevin’s young age for such a tall task, I asked him what were his favorite films for dance musicals. Without

hesitation he answered the Busby Berkley films of the 30’s and his favorite, the classic “All That Jazz” (1979). As the saying goes, he had my attention with “All That Jazz”, which is also one of my favorite dance musicals! The theme of the “Fame” movies are based on the students who attend a high school started in 1936 by New York City Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia, called the New York City High School for the Performing Arts. Known today as Fiorello H. LaGuardia H.S., students get specialized training for professional careers in dance, music or drama, while also completing a full academic program. Director Kevin Tancharoen draws on his experiences as a dancer, choreographer, editor, producer, and writer, all at only 22 years old! During the interview, Kevin talked about his fascination with Hollywood beginning at 4 years old when he started seeing movies with his parents, and how his experience as a music video director, editor, and his knowledge of modern digital technology use in film production to provide his vision for “Fame”. Read more of the fascinating conversation with Director Kevin Tancharoen at www.ScreenScene.org and www. AZWeeklyMagazine.com “Fame”, Starring Naturi Naughton, Debbie Allen, Kelsey Grammer, Megan Mullally, Collins Pennie, Charles Dutton, and Bebe Neuwirth. Directed by Kevin Tancharoen; written by Allison Burnett; Rated PG for thematic material including teen drinking, a sexual situation and language. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) release.

a less than acceptable feeling when watching to latest version of that film. I have always contented, probably because I worked on movies for more than 22 years, that movies are made through the eyes of the filmmaker with the influences, nuances, and vision of the time, with the intention of relating to the viewer. The 1980 Oscar® winning movie “Fame” presented what it was like for the hopeful, determined youths of the 80’s with aspirations of becoming dancers, singers, actors, and artists as they the New York City High School for the Performing Arts. Through their eyes, we learned of the ups and downs, trials and tribulations, joy and disappointment, and the dedication of parents, teachers, and friends that are pivotal influences for success.

Forecast: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs By: Randy Montgomery It may be a warm 98 degrees and dry in Phoenix, but the forecast for the town of Swallow Falls is Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. We here in Arizona complain about monsoon storms that often times drop a large amount of rain, hail and gusty winds in a short period of time, but we’ve never had to deal with giant food items falling from the sky. Based on the popular children’s book of the same name written and illustrated by Judi and Ron Barrett and first published in 1978, the film follows the antics of likeable, yet nerdy inventor named Flint Lockwood (voice of Bill Hader). His childhood inventions usually failed, making him the laughing stock of his school and community. His “spray on shoes” have stayed with him for some time, and his other ideas seem to bomb

miserably. As a young adult, his latest invention that is supposed to help world hunger goes terribly awry when it starts to produce massively huge replicas of actual food items. The townsfolk become greedy and start wishing for all sorts of goodies and snacks, which overload the contraption and creates a massive storm of food that threatens large cities around the globe – especially cities with “notably famous landmarks.” Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is being released in traditional 2-D format, as well as 3-D and IMAX. While I was fortunate enough to see the film in 3-D, the animation was nothing to write home about, but the humor and the ingenious comedic delivery of lines makes this animated film geared towards children a mustsee for adults as well. Fans of the book will enjoy watching how the town of Chewandshallow got its name, while newbies will enjoy the humor and sheer craziness of the story.

Surrogates By Randy Montgomery Yes, Bruce Willis’ hair look terrible and his face looks like plastic in the trailer for Surrogates. The new look is not due to hair plugs and Botox, it’s actually his “Surrogate,” a robotic version of himself that roams the streets. Surrogates have been created so that humans can stay within the safety of their home while their robotic counterparts endure the dangers of everyday life. Sounds like a good idea until the surrogates go rogue.

as the single largest issue of a magazine ever published. Each year in September, that issue features the designs and designers that the editors feel will be influential in the coming year. As many of us know, but know little about, is the guiding force behind the magazine is the legendary Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

“The September Issue”, an inside view of Vogue’s guiding force! Review by Stan Robinson Documentary films have an undaunting task of presenting situations, circumstances, or information in a way that’s appealing yet interesting to the viewer. When there are two factors, one of general knowledge, the second, reclusive and mysterious, it’s what documentaries of made of! In the international world of fashion, Vogue magazine is the publication with one of the highest profiles and influence on what is in and what’s not, and, for designers, that make-or-break factor. The title, “The September Issue”, refers to the September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine, weighing nearly five pounds, and has the record

With being called reclusive, some might even call distant and unapproachable, director R.J. Cutler was given unprecedented access to Vogue’s larger-than-life team of editors and Anna Wintour! The documentary team follows Anna Wintour as she visits the annual Fashion Week shows, accept or dismiss the latest creations of the biggest names in fashion, works with the models, photographers, and writers who help bring her vision to print. A high point of the documentary is Anna Wintour shares insight on her childhood, fashion ideas, and her motivations for fashion while we get candid comments from her senior editors who have been who have been at her side for decades. How compelling is this documentary? When I saw the current issue, I looked through it, remembering the hours, blood, sweat and yes, tears, the creative forces must have put into the issue, and the guiding force behind it… Directed by R.J. Cutler; Rated PG-13 for brief strong language; Roadside Attractions release; Runtime: 90 minutes.

DINE! SECTION St. Francis Restaurant Opens In Phoenix A celebration of sustenance may best describe Chef Aaron Chamberlin’s much-anticipated new restaurant, St. Francis. The restaurant opened September 14th in a historic building on Camelback Road, just east of Central in uptown Phoenix. The family-owned, family-built and familyrun restaurant welcomes patrons to a new neighborhood gathering place. The repurposed space has been transformed with a comfortably modern and rustic sensibility that echoes the honest, spontaneous “wood fired cuisine. St. Francis is for everyday nourishment for families, couples and even for special occasions. It’s for connecting with the community and sharing the simple pleasure of simple, honest and good food. St. Francis was designed by one of the valley’s most notable architects, Wendell Burnette Architects. The mezzanine dining level is more refined with views of the bar and Piestewa Peak. Outdoor patios, with lush

landscaping, provide a perfect spot for neighborly conversation. The Distinctive spaces include a pop out bay window where diners have an uncensored glimpse of the kitchen and the wood fired oven and a bay that contains a large glass roll up door with an indoor/outdoor bar. Much of St. Francis restaurant appeal stems from its role as essential part of the neigh hoods landscape, a symbol of comfort and honesty. To encourage integration into the community, it was important to maintain an open dialogue between the interior and exterior. Great pleasure awaits patrons of St. Francis at the hands of Chef Chamberlin. His intuitive cuisine respects the integrity of each food, encouraging unique flavors often through wood-firing and his French/ Mediterranean training. And, to make sure a wonderful meal ends on the sweetest note, Chamberlin drew inspiration from his collection of antique cookbooks to craft Tuity Fruity Cake and Sticky Toffee Pudding, among other desserts.

5 Tips for a Flawless Fine Dining Experience You are ecstatic. That gorgeous man you met the other night just asked you to dinner and you are determined to make a good first impression. You look awesome in your new black dress and high heel pumps. Your upswept hair flatters the features of your pretty face which you so carefully touched up with make-up. The doorbell rings and you take an excited breath… you are thrilled. You want this dinner to be memorable in every way, the night to be perfect. Before you ring that doorbell or proceed to open that door, ask yourself…. Have you brushed up on your etiquette lately? Most will agree that first impressions do matter. Nothing ruins a promising first date more than bad table manners. So, before you reserve a table at your favorite dining restaurant, here are some things to remember. 1. The Perfect Gentleman and the Gracious Lady. Gentleman, contrary to what some people think, chivalry is still an admirable trait. Opening doors, pulling chairs, standing up when your date excuses herself to go to the restroom etc. is not only proper, but it also reveals that you are a polite and

courteous person. Ladies, admit it, even in this day and age where we demand equal rights, having a date that is well-mannered impresses us a lot. The least we could do is show graciousness by saying thank you. 2. To Order or Not To Order, that’s the question. Upon being seated, a waiter will hand you a menu. You may order a drink first while deciding on what to eat. Customarily, it is the man who tells the waiter what they are ordering, but it is now acceptable to place orders individually. If you are having trouble understanding the menu selections written in a foreign language, don’t feel embarrassed to ask a waiter to describe the dishes to you. 3. Which One is the Right One? After unfolding the table napkin and carefully placing it on your lap, it is proper to wait until you are both served before starting to eat. Now, the next question is, which one of the vast assortment of utensils do you use for a specific entrée? Here is how utensils are commonly arranged in fine restaurants.

On the left side of the plate – all forks except the fish fork. On the right side of the plate – the knives are placed on the

Bet You Didn’t Know

inside right, after that will be the spoons. The soup spoon is on the outside right after the teaspoons. Upper right side of the plate – water and wine glasses. Upper left side – bread and butter plate.

while you are chewing. It is not only improper but unsightly to talk while your mouth is full. Also, refrain from asking your date any question when he/she is chewing as it will be difficult to answer you right away.

The easiest way to remember this is to use utensils placed farthest from the plate and then work your way in.

5. Don’t Forget to Breathe. Finally, relax. Chances are your date is as nervous as you are. Try to enjoy the dinner and the conversation you are having with your companion.

4. Let’s Talk, but not with your mouth full. How many times have we heard mom say, don’t talk when your mouth is full? Well, mom is definitely right and that advice perfectly applies to this situation. Take small, bite-size pieces of food, chew it carefully with your mouth closed and avoid talking

These being said, you are now ready to embark on a new journey – and hopefully a memorable one. Go ahead, ring that doorbell, answer that door, have fun and Bon Appetit!

2. Be prepared with an assortment of glass styles to cover the type of drinks you plan to serve. These include wine glasses for wines, juice and water; straight-sided highballs for tall drinks; tumblers for spirits and juices; and martini glasses.

Cocktail Party Essentials

3. Have twice as many glasses on hand as guests. For wine, champagne and martini glasses, wine glass charms will help guests to keep track of glasses as they mill about your party.

Whether you’re an experienced cocktail party host, or are just stepping into the stylish world of cocktail party entertaining, here are a few tips to help make your next party a successful event.

4. If you plan on serving wine and/ or champagne, you’ll need to have one bottle for every two guests. Have a mix of white and red varieties. White used to be the predominant favorite, but red is becoming just as popular.

1. Stock up on plenty of ice. You’ll need it for chilling bottles of wine or champagne as well as serving in drinks on the rocks. A good rule of thumb is to have 1-pound of ice per guest.

5. You’ll want to stock up on vodka, whiskey, wines and beer. For a more complete bar you can add gin, tequila, rum, bourbon, vermouth, sherry, and brandy.

Pre-Party Central

Roaring Fork Not easy to find, but gourmet food at unbelievably low happy hour prices. It’s not on the menu, but ask for the chili-mac and cheese. Roaring Fork has long been known for the “Big Ass Burger” described as “12 ounces of Grilled Love.” Happy hour here is Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Happy Hour in Downtown Scottsdale Welcome to happy hour in Old Town Scottsdale. Alone, couples, groups-it’s all good. Just be ready for a fun night filled with endless unique options. No matter the vibe you seek, there are plenty of fun spots to start the night off with a bang. Kona Grill For their extended range of happy hour times, the Ladies Margaritas (raspberry Chambord), ½ off sushi , ½ off appetizers, come as you are, stay late for reverse happy hour at 10 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Bungalow Bar & Grill Hot gals, handsome dudes, awesome appetizers, Bungalow Bites (sirloin and cheese au jus), Bungalow Juice, Grilled Cheese Sandwiches--yum, yum! Great seating in and outdoors. Monday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. September 24th - September 30th, 2009 AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

Yard House Fun happy hour inside or out. The prices on food can’t be beat, like beer for a buck-fifty off the regular price. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Salty Señorita The patio is right on Scottsdale Road. In the summer the misters work well, and the margaritas are too good. Try the Salty House Marg. If outside isn’t your thing, there’s plenty of inside seating. Happy hour at Salty Señorita is seven days per week, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

6. Don’t forget to stock up on mixers including orange juice, soda, tonic, ginger ale, cola, tomato juice, Tabasco, lemons, limes, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce. 7. If you anticipate your guests will be wine drinkers, you can prepare by uncorking a few bottles in advance, and then replacing the corks. 8. Consider hiring a bartender to mix the drinks for your party. That will allow you much more time to socialize with your guests. There are even caterers that specialize in bartending services only. 9. Have coffee available for any guests that may need a little assistance at the end of the party. Your local taxi company phone number should also be handy and offered to any guests you believe shouldn’t be driving. 10. And remember, a cocktail party is not a family event!

The Night Owl If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE Have you been enjoying restaurant week? If not, there are a few more days left and I have a few last minute picks for you. Plus we have a musician who hasn’t been here since 1992 and more. For all that happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley, read on. We’re on Twitter too--@ bdiggs and @myFEmy. Restaurant Week: Sure, we all know what the economy is like, blah, blah, blah, but if you have cash laying around there is no better place to spend it than on Arizona Restaurant Week. For those of you not in the know, Arizona Restaurant Week is a celebration of Arizona restaurants where participating restaurants offer a three course menu at the fixed price of $29 for an individual ($58 for a couple), it is going on right now and ends the 26th. Although when this went to print, it was only day one of restaurant week, I did take advantage by going to the Roaring Fork where I enjoyed Tortilla Soup, Dr. Pepper Short Ribs and a Hot Chocolate Lava Brownie. Between everyone at my table we had about everything on the menu and all turned out well so I would recommend it. However, there are a few others I’m going to try and you should squeeze in before the offer is up. Here are the few that are on my list: Different Pointe of View: One of the best views in the Valley is worth the $29 itself, but with choices of: (starters--Lobster Bisque, Baby Wild Arugula & Strawberry Salad or Port Cabernet Braised Kobe Short Rib), (main courses--Cedar River Prime New York Strip, Palo Verde Farms Pork Tenderloin with Chorizo Stuffing, Wild Alaskan Day Boat Halibut or Free Range Sonoma Farms Chicken Trio) and (desserts--Classic Tahitian Vanilla Bean Crème Brulee, Chocolate Amandine or Warm Vanilla Cannele) you just can’t go wrong.

Vincent’s on Camelback—Long known as one of the Valley’s top restaurant, Arizona Restaurant Week prices gives everyone a shot at luxurious living. Starter choices are Smoked Salmon Quesadilla with Dill & Horseradish Cream, Ratatouille Tart with Parmesan Crisps & Black Olive Tapenade, Mesclun Blend Salad with Goat Cheese, Pears & Walnut Dressing or Spicy Tomato & Lobster Bisque. Main course choices are Sauteed Salmon with Wild Rice & Basil Beurre Blanc, Beef Tenderloin with Thyme & Crispy Ginger, Duck Confit with Citrus Sauce, or Basil Pasta with Basil Pesto. Dessert choices are “Jack Daniel’s” Pecan Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream, Warm Chocolate Tarts with Fresh Whipped Cream, Crème Brulee with Fresh Berries, or Lemon Tart with Raspberry Sauce. The Capital Grille—No list would be complete without a trip to one of the Valley’s fine steakhouses, and Capital Grille is at the top on my list.

Starters include Field Greens with Fresh Herbs & Tomatoes, Cup of French Onion Soup, or Caesar Salad. Main courses are 10 oz Kona Crusted Dry Aged Sirloin, Seared Citrus Glazed Salmon, or 8 oz Filet Mignon. Desserts choices are Flourless Chocolate Espresso Cake, Classic Crème Brulee or French Strawberries Capital Grille. These are just a FEW of the dozens upon dozens of choices. The Arizona Restaurant Week Web site does a nice job of sorting by location and cuisine type so I suggest visiting it at arizonarestaurantweek.com. You can also make online reservations for many places, which I’d suggest especially for some of the more popular places like the above. Let me know where you went, what you had and what you thought. Eat well! Mark Knopfler: Mark Knopfler is widely regarded as one of the best composers and guitar players of our time. As former lead singer of the Dire Straights, the Grammy Award-winning penned hits like ‘Money For Nothing,’ ‘Sultans Of Swing, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Walk of Life,’ has produced records for Bob Dylan and Randy Newman, and has scored several films including Cal, Local Hero, Princess Bride and A Shot at Glory. Basically he’s a living icon, and guess what. He hasn’t performed in Phoenix since 1992…until now! With his new recording, Get Lucky, he’ll be touring and making a stop at the Dodge Theatre on April 18th. That’s a long ways away, but tickets are on sale now! He is on my “must-see” list and that of many other people as well. I’ve never seen him live, but will be attending. Reserved tickets are priced at $71.00, $46.00 and a limited number of Golden Circle tickets will be available at www.livenation. com, Dodge Theatre Box Office and to charge by phone call 1-877-LYV-6671 Singing Competition: Where are all my musicians looking for a break? Brad Perry—yeah, that one formerly of Channel 3—is hosting the Lucky Break singing competition at Lone Butte Casino in Chandler, where winners are competing against one another for the chance to perform in front of record industry AND a trip to the Grammy’s. Plus the show is broadcast weekly every Saturday night at 10:35pm on CBS 5. To sign up for this competition you need to register online at WinGilaRiver.com or in person at the Lone Butte Casino’s Players Club desk. Live auditions for Lucky Break will take place every Wednesday in the Cascades Lounge at Lone Butte Casino. I know there are a lot of you out there looking for a chance so don’t pass this one up. A business can also save its profit or re-invest it by making improvements to the business or hiring new people. Stocks that issue frequent dividends are income stocks. Stocks in companies that re-invest their profits are growth stocks. Brokers buy and sell stocks through an exchange, charging a commission to do so. A broker is simply a person who is licensed to trade stocks through the exchange. A broker can be on the trading floor or can make trades by phone or electronically.

THE IN’S AND OUT’S OF ONLINE TRADING Online trading has given anyone who has a computer, enough money to open an account and a reasonably good financial history the ability to invest in the market. You don’t have to have a personal broker or a disposable fortune to do it, and most analysts agree that average people trading stock is no longer a sign of impending doom. he market has become more acT cessible, but that doesn’t mean you should take online trading lightly. Here’s a look at the different types of online trading accounts, as well as how to choose an online brokerage, make trades and protect yourself from fraud. Review of Stocks & Markets Before we look at the world of online trading, let’s take a quick look at the basics of the stock market. A share of stock is basically a tiny piece of a corporation. Shareholders -- people who buy stock -- are investing in the future of a company for as long as they own their shares. The price of a share varies according to economic conditions, the performance of the company and investors’ attitudes. The first time a company offers its stock for public sale is called an initial public offering (IPO), also known as “going public.” When a business makes a profit, it can share that money with its stockholders by issuing a dividend.

Are You Ready For The Next Downturn?

An exchange is like a warehouse in which people buy and sell stocks. A person or computer must match each buy order to a sell order, and vice versa. Some exchanges work like auctions on an actual trading floor, and others match buyers to sellers electronically. Some examples of major stock exchanges are: The New York Stock Exchange, which trades stocks auction-style on a trading floor The NASDAQ, an electronic stock exchange The Tokyo Stock Exchange, a Japanese stock exchange Worldwide Stock Exchanges has a list of major exchanges. Over-the-counter (OTC) stocks are not listed on a major exchange, and you can look up information on them at the OTC Bulletin Board or PinkSheets. When you buy and sell stocks online, you’re using an online broker that largely takes the place of a human broker. You still use real money, but instead of talking to someone about investments, you decide which stocks to buy and sell, and you request your trades yourself. Some online brokerages offer advice from live brokers and broker-assisted trades as part of their service. If you need a broker to help you with your trades, you’ll need to choose a firm that offers that service. In the next issue we’ll take a look at other qualities to look for in an online brokerage. Until then, invest in the best – and get to trading!

SUPER ATHLETES OF THE FUTURE

often left wondering if the stopwatches themselves were legitimate, recording never before seen speed and endurance.

THE EVOLUTION OF SPORT

It seems that athletes have evolved into something once unimagined. With off-the-charts speed, explosive power and unheard of levels of strength and conditioning, one can only wonder to what level their respective sport of interest will reach. They’re quicker, faster and stronger – and they last longer on the field, as if injuries are now simply minor setbacks. In the three major American professional sports leagues – the National Football League, the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball – there is little question that the athletes have evolved into something far superior to what has been traditionally known as a “good” wellrounded athlete.

BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW

Given the results from draft combines, the same could be said of college athletes. Physical gifts come into play when athletes are trying to reach college. Everything from their speed to their skills is tested in the evaluation process. Every second counts – and the numbers these individuals are putting up are simply staggering. One is

30 30

(5th and Mill in Downtown Tempe)

Kids today are more physically prepared to make that leap to the next level, despite tremendous pressure to succeed. Over the next decade or two, it only makes sense that athletes will grow even more, becoming more and more gifted both physically and mentally. Maybe it’s an issue of performance enhancing supplements and a more informed approach to nutrition strategy. Perhaps it’s due in part to a finer grade of high-performance training. Or maybe the human athlete today has simply broken the DNA barrier in terms of what is possible in sport and the records one can achieve along the way. Athletes across the board are indeed raising the bar - and in many cases outgrowing the very game they play. Will the steady rise of jaw-dropping, near flawless athletic abilities begin to plateau anytime soon? Common sense may be unsure, but science says not a chance. From the fan’s perspective however, it appears there is no end in sight. The evolution of sport continues on a path that’s hard to grasp, a level of play that far exceeds what was once considered great.

Abner Doubleday was once quoted as saying “Baseball is a sport best left to charlatans and thieves.”

As a matter of fact, there is - and it is fantastic! The game is called “Bobble Ball.” It is very similar to Bocce Ball or Shuffleboard. The game is played with a multicolored egg-shaped ball that is made out of billiard ball material, and your set of billiard balls. The Bobble Balls come in a variety of colors. When playing Bobble Ball, a match consists of 6 games, with the Bobble Ball changing positions six times on the pool table. When using your billiard balls (you can purchase multicolored playing balls as well) one player gets 6 solids and the other 6 stripes. The two players sit or stand at the end of the pool table and, using their hands, roll their category of balls towards any rail intending to bounce off the rail and roll closest to the egg-shaped Bobble ball. The object of the game is to collect points by getting as many of your balls closer to the Bobble Ball than your opponent. Only one player can score from 1 to 6 points for each set. What makes the game challenging is you cannot roll your object ball directly at the Bobble Ball. You must first hit one of the 5 rails on the pool table. The 6th rail is where the game is initiated. Players quickly learn the rail angles

and the speed of the table. Because the Bobble Ball is egg-shaped, hitting it can change the game dramatically because it doesn’t roll like a normal ball. Sometimes it spins and goes backwards; sometimes it rolls straight and then takes an immediate left hand turn. Therefore, Finesse is very much a part of the game. To add additional excitement, two Bobble Balls can be used where one counts for positive points and the other negative points. Our customers buy them for a variety of reasons; For parties where you want to engage ALL your guests because some don’t know how, or are not very good, at pool; For children or neighbors children for fear of damaged cues or felt; and, it is also a great adult game where alcoholic beverages are consumed. No matter what your reason, once you try it you will be hooked. It is very addictive and tons of fun. Until next time, there is no Eggcuse not to try this. Oh, and “Bobble On!”

Naked Dave’s Local Distortion The Naked Truth:

Formed in 2003, a trio of brothers; Bobby (guitar/vocals), Jimmy (bass/ vocals) and Davey (drums), took over the stage on Friday the 18th @ The Red Owl. Better known as Calabrese (or as they boast) “The World’s GREATEST Horror Rock Band”. This Danzig meets The Misfits (with a tad bit of Rob Zombie mixed in) did an excellent job of proving it. They are a very tight and well polished act, which holds no punches back. Calabrese has created a large (and loyal) cult following with tunes like, “Vampire’s don’t Exist,” “Voices of the Dead,” and “The Death of Me.” Calabrese has shared the stage with several big name Punk bands, such as, The Misfits, Nekromantix, Tiger Army, 45 Grave, Mad Sin, and The living End. Their music has also been featured in Independent films.

I would like to first give a shout out to Cory (newest addition to Dirty Dan and the Distributors). It was Cory’s birthday on Saturday the 19th, and a very nice party was thrown in his honor at Smokey’s Bar and Grill. Playing for the bash was Lovemound and Dirty Dan and the Distributors, and a good time was had by all. Well Cory, from all of us here at Naked Dave’s Music, and AZ Weekly, we hope you had a rockin birthday; we also wish you, a blessed year ahead of you! OK, on to the reviews……………..

So the next time these young “Lads of the Night” are playing in town, I encourage you to seek them out! However just a word to the wise, be wary on the nights with a full moon. You could become their next melodic meal! Headlining the night was a band from Montreal, Canada called The Brains. For the past seven years, Montreal’s psychobilly horror-punk outfit, The Brains, have been terrorizing unsuspecting audiences worldwide with their dastardly and morbid mix of 50’s rock n’ roll, country and old school

punk rock. Fronted by undead Latin lothario slasher/axeman Rene d la Muerte, they round out their unholy posse with beer-chugging, standup bass-slappin Johnny Montreal and the gravedigging, drum-pounding rhythm stylings of Franck O’ Brains. Having previously released two blood-drenched full-lengths (No Pain, No Brain and Hell n’ Back), The Brains prove that the third time really is the charm. Relentless touring, song-writing and unwavering dedication to their craft has resulted in one hell of a kickass, genre-defining third recording. “Self Titled” features 11 tracks of spooky, ass-shaking and undeniably infectious rock n roll that’ll deeply satisfy old and new fans of psycho, rockabilly, punk, rock and everything in between. Over the past year, The Brains have graced stages across the country alongside such heavy hitters as Rancid, The Creepshow, The Planet Smashers, Mad Sin and the Matadors just to name a few. What else can I say except……….”Blame it on Canada!”

The Ironbird returns! If you are in an 80’s Glam/Tribute band, this is the guitar for you. It has a striking white pearl finish and charcoal bevels. With a bolt on neck, six in line pointed headstock it is completed with full neck and headstock single ply black binding. Other stand out features includes an Original Floyd Rose tremolo, two Black Rockfield Mafia pickups, and Grover tuning machines. The body is NATO with a Maple neck built with a 24 5/8” scale and topped off with special White lightning inlay on an Ebony fingerboard. This special limited White Ironbird is sure to deliver the visual and sonic impact you want from an Ironbird! Specifications Construction: bolt on Body wood: NATO Top style: bevel top Tuners: B.C. Rich® die-cast Fretboard: ebony Frets: 24 jumbo Scale: 24 5/8” Special Features: Pearl White body and headstock, silver metallic bevels and special lightning white pearl fretboard inlay Bridge: Floyd Rose original tremolo Pickups: Two black Rockfield® Mafia humbuckers Controls: 1 volume, 1 three-way toggle and 1 tone

early Patti Smith, Alanis Morrisette and even Janis Joplin, particularly on “Hard Lovin’ Woman”. “Uh Huh” is far more commercial than anything on the album, and she can certainly play that card if she feels the need to eventually break in the mainstream. I preferred the more straightforward and harder edged sound of 2007’s ‘Four On The Floor’ which featured Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl on drums and an album packed with enough swagger to kick you right where you live. Clearly going for a different approach this time, this is still worthy of repeated listening and is another step forward for her in terms of establishing herself as a legitimate recording artist and not just another “actor turned singer”. – Stephen Wilkinson

When actors venture into the music world, the results can often be disastrous if not just plain disappointing. Once in a while, one of them will come up with something worthwhile. Although the latest release from Juliette Lewis (her 4th) will probably not set any sales records, it’s obvious she is not banking on her acting status to carry anything for her in terms of the songwriting. This is a pretty decent album where no two E RECO Nsongs O sound R D anything like one another. Z CK It is full of an array of sounds, a tinge of psychedelia, reverb delayed guitars sprinkled throughout, some blues but most notably moody, edgy rock with some vocals that might surprise some expecting unflattering results a’la Paris Hilton. JAY Z AND THE BEATLES GO HEAD TO HEAD The Big News: Jay-Z may have won the battle of the charts, but the Beatles won the war. Jigga’s The Blueprint 3 debuted at Number One on the Top 200 with 475,000 copies sold, giving him one of the best first weeks in 2009, but the Fab Four were the big story as their remastered catalog combined to sell 646,000 albums 40 years after the majority of the LP were originally released. BP3 marks Jay-Z’s 11th trip to the top of the charts, meaning he has surpassed Elvis Presley to become the solo artist with the most Number One albums of all time. Blueprint 3 also improved on the 425,000 copies American Gangster sold in its debut in 2007. Like Michael Jackson’s albums, the Beatles weren’t eligible for the Top 200, but on the Comprehensive Albums chart, the Fab Four simply dominated as fans rushed to hear the band’s remastered work. 1969’s Abbey Road was the week’s Number Three album, selling 88,000 copies.

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band finished at Number Five with 73,000 copies en route to passing the quadruple platinum mark. In total, the Beatles had five albums in the Comprehensive’s Top 10, and nine in the Top 20. On top of that, the complete Beatles in Stereo box set sold 25,000 copies to land Number 15 on the Top 200 where it was eligible as a new release, while the Beatles in Mono moved 11,000 boxes to finish at 40. It goes without saying that the Beatles also put to an end Michael Jackson’s ownership of the Catalog Albums chart.

You need to understand that when you hit a good shot, all the mechanics of your swing must have all come together at just the right time or sequence at impact, at the specific rhythm or swing speed you had on the range. Once most golfers get to the golf course, they begin to increase the RPM on their swing so that the synchronization of your swing falls apart. Resulting in a club face that is out of alignment with the path, or maybe your body out of position from swinging faster and harder or even slower.

Taking Your Swing From the Driving Range to the Course Transferring your perfect consistent driving range warm up swing to the golf course is a typical dilemma and a frustration of many a golfer. You’re killing it on the range, everything seems perfect. You’re convinced that you will have your best round ever and then right on the first tee you yank it out of bounds! Some golfers can play well for the first three or four holes, only to lose their rhythm on the fifth hole and throw away a great start. Others play like a dog the first four holes, finally relax and start to play better. Does this sound like you? If so there’s help. Begin your day with the short game warm up first. After completing your short game work, head for the driving range with about 20 minutes to spend. Try to end your last swing with your Driver with just enough time to get the first tee comfortably, (make sure it’s a good driver shot or hit another one until you do). You want your last swing to be the first thing

At the first tee, picture in your mind that exact swing speed or rhythm you had on the last great tee shot you hit at the range only moments ago. If anything attempt to swing the golf club a notch or two slower than on the range. Don’t overdo it. Swinging way too slow will have the same poor result as swinging too fast. Remember, having the arms and body out of sync is the problem. Your swing operates at a specific speed where all the parts seem to fall into place. Find that swing speed or rhythm and you got it made.

ball flight when making a swing improvement for 20 to 30 days or more. Once you head to the golf course let the practice on rebuilding your swing melt in to your golf game without having to think about it on the golf course. Develop a pre-shot routine. Maintaining a consistent pre-shot routine on your range warm up and carrying it over to the golf course is key to your controlling your tempo and rhythm on the golf course. Be patient on the golf course. What difference does it make if you bogey the first hole or the last, it’s still a bogey. Forget it. Keep playing, stay within your rhythm and

hope for the best. Don’t force your game, like a young quarterback trying to force a ball in coverage and getting intercepted. Getting emotional over a bad hole will only make things worse. Ben Hogan was probably the greatest at controlling his emotions on the golf course. Controlling your emotions doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Stay relaxed, concentrate on your swing rhythm not your mechanics, (that’s for the driving range) and enjoy the day. After all that’s why you play golf!

GOLF! SECTION

you can relate to when you tee it up.

As the game progresses you may be in further risk of swinging harder or slower. Having a couple of bad holes can affect your swing speed tremendously. Depending on your personality some golfers get angry and swing harder. That only leads to further damage and a totally lost day. One common flaw is mixing target golf with swing mechanics. Concentrate on swing mechanics on the driving range not on the golf course. We’re referring to driving range work for your swing, not the driving range warm before you play. Driving range warm up before play is for flexibility, tempo and rhythm not swing mechanics. When working on swing mechanics on the driving range, do not concern yourself with accuracy. You may experience erratic

Jeep Patriot

Picture and Review by Chad Haire When the Patriot model was first introduced, many Jeep fans turned their nose up at it, as it is based on the same car platform as the Jeep Compass and Dodge Caliber. “Not a real Jeep,” they said. Well, right or wrong, the unit you see in this photo is a real Jeep and can hit the trails thanks to the optional Freedom Off-Road package. The off-road pack includes a raised suspension, bigger tires, large aluminum wheels, tow hooks, hill decent control, skid plates, 4-wheel drive, oil cooler and a raised air filter for crossing wet streams. At $1,315, it’s a bargain, but you have to order the CVT automatic transmission also, which will set you back another grand. The 5-speed manual is for the two-wheel drives. So does the system work? You bet. All you do is hit the 4x4 switch, then put the gearbox in “low”setting. This transmits maximum power to all four wheels. While

there isn’t a real low-range transfer case, this set-up works just fine. The suspension has about 9 inches of clearance, so rocks are easily driven over. Another advantage is the short length and narrow width that allows you to fit onto trails bigger rigs can’t. As a bonus, the Patriot isn’t very heavy, so power duties can be served by the 172 horsepower four-cylinder engine. Gas mileage is rated at 20-22, which is what I got on the street. Hard off-road driving saw about 17. The base price starts at about $16,000 for the 2WD version with 5-speed. The all-wheel drive unit is $17,225. Mine was loaded up with all the toys, so it hit $22,375. But by limiting the fluff options, it is possible to get a true 4x4 for less than $20 grand. With some of the Jeep rebates being offered, figure about $17,000 at the time we tested. If you like driving outdoors, but are short on money, this is the one to get.

Have you or someone you know been diagnosed with breast cancer? If so, here’s some good news... The Arizona Institute for Breast Health provides a 2nd opinion for treatment options to women who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer – COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE. Each 2nd opinion is provided through a multi-disciplinary panel of breast cancer specialists and each patient is supported and lovingly guided by a patient advocate, a breast cancer survivor herself. You can help support AIBH by sponsoring Pink Honor Lights through The Pink Light District. These pink lights will glow throughout October on the Canal Bridge in downtown Scottsdale in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To sponsor your Pink Honor Lights, visit www.ThePinkLightDistrict.org

For more information about becoming a patient, please visit www.AIBH.org or call 480-860-4200.
