Let’s Play!

Kid at Heart Helps Kids on the Street Scottsdale- He may look serious, but artist Kevin Caron (www.kevincaron. com) is really just a big kid. “Guilty as charged, the Phoenix sculptor admits. The playfulness is apparent in many of the new pieces that he’ll be exhibiting in his upcoming one-man show, ‘Kid at Heart’, which opens October 16th at Pearson & Company in Scottsdale. Caron won’t be the only kid in the house, though. Homeless youths from the nonprofit organization Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development (www. tumbleweed.org), the show’s charitable recipient, will be showing some of their own work as well, and will share more about how Tumbleweed is helping them. “Events like these help raise the community consciousness that homeless youth are really amazing young people, just needing that opportunity to show others who they can be, says Richard Geasland, executive director of Tumbleweed. 10% of show sales go to the nonprofit organization. The show opening will be during Scottsdale’s ArtWalk. Caron, whose work can be seen in parks and private settings from New York to New Orleans to California to Oregon and many places between, and representatives from Tumbleweed, which touches the lives of more than 3,000 neglected youth annually, will also be appearing on Saturday, October 18th from 10am to 3pm. He will be showing new pieces including “Wild Swiss, “Ciuffo (“wisp in Italian), and the eagerly anticipated sculpture, “Loaded. Pearson & Company is located at 7022 E. Main St. For more information about the show, including a map of free parking in Scottsdale, contact the Kevin Caron Studio at info@kevincaron.com or call (602) 952-8767.

AZ Weekly Super Sweet Recipe of the Week

By Jesse Cole

Grilled Vegetable Quesadilla Tacos (makes 6 tacos) 12 soft Corn tortillas Shredded cheese (blend of jack and cheddar) Refried beans 1 bunch of cilantro 2 soft avocados 2 ripe tomatoes 1 large red onion 3 zucchini squash (yellow or green) 1 large jalapeño pepper (optional) 1 cup of extra virgin olive oil 1 small bag of mixed greens and/or chopped Cilantro for garnish 2 breasts enchilada-style chicken (optional)

Directions - -

- - - -

-

Cut the red onion in half and the zucchini into 1/3 strips. Drizzle olive oil over vegetables, add salt and pepper, and let sit 10-15 minutes. Marinate chicken breasts in enchilada sauce 1-2 hours before starting the grill. When the grill is hot enough, sear the chicken on either side and baste in enchilada sauce every few minutes. Add the vegetables to the grill and drizzle the remaining olive oil from the dish over the zucchini. Cook onions and zucchini until soft. Cut chicken, red onion, and zucchini and set to the side. Preparing the pan for the quesadillas: medium heat, use a paper towel to coat the bottom of the pan with olive oil or butter. Coat one side of each tortilla with a small amount of refried beans. Place one of the tortillas in the pan, beans facing up and add shredded cheese. Sandwich the cheese with the second tortilla bean side down. When the bottom is golden brown, flip the quesadilla with a spatula and press down, melting the cheese. Cook until golden brown and set aside on a plate with paper towel to absorb the excess oil or butter. When all 6 quesadillas are made, serve them like soft taco shells and fill them with the grilled vegetables and chicken. Garnish with chopped cilantro and mixed greens, your favorite salsa, and some guacamole.

The Night Owl If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE Can you believe that it is October already? With that, the haunted houses are warming up their frights, and I’ll let you know some of the best you can find to enjoy throughout the horrifying holiday. Don’t miss one of Tempe’s big festivals, and read a review of one of the Valley’s newest clubs! For all that happened, is happening, and will happen in the Valley, read on. Sangria Luxe Lounge: It finally happened. The West Valley officially has an upscale luxury club, Sangria Luxe Lounge; and it’s about time. The Night Owl attended the opening and was pleased to see that the club offers exactly what was anticipated and more. The crowd was reminiscent of the types of Night Owls you might find at Devil’s Martini or Barcelona, a mature bunch looking for lavish entertainment with an upscale twist. Seating is limited, probably to encourage more people to shake it on the dance floor. Although Sangria is smaller than its rivals, its sound system isn’t small by any means. It features a mix of popular hip-hop and pop tracks, and offers a stage for live entertainment. Besides being the only one of its kind in the West Valley, its well-crafted cocktails are what really gives Sangria its spots. Not entirely Spanish and not entirely Latin, the cocktails are a refreshing fusion of the two, with alluring names like Rio de Janeiro, Ibiza, and CoCo-Nutz Margarita. As a West Valley resident, I encourage you to stop in, and as a fellow Night Owl, it’s expected. To experience the luxury of Sangria Luxe Lounge visit, www.sangrialuxelounge. com. AVP Crocs Tour 2008: As exciting as it is to witness Olympians bring home the gold in Beijing, it is even more exciting to see how their journey to the Olympics begins. This past weekend, Glendale hosted the AVP Crocs Tour 2008 season-ending tournament. The tournament brought the spirit of beach Volleyball to Westgate City Center, and families, revelers, and Night Owls were out in full force. I spotted the gigantic gold medalist himself, Phil Dalhausser, leisurely strolling the grounds, and looked in vain for Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh. The matches were more intense than what you think you see on TV, and it is more exciting to see the action live. After I got home, I googled local volleyball clubs, as not only does the sport look fun, but also after seeing the women volleyball players, it looks like a great work out too.

Tour de Fat: Have you seen how many bicycles are in Tempe? Drive by any of the student dorms and you’ll see hundreds locked up outside, with many more co-eds pedaling around town. So what better place for New Belgium’s Tour de Fat to take place than Tempe Town Lake? Set for October 11th, the Tour celebrates all things bicycle and features food, music, and of course, Fat Tire beer. A costumed bike parade, which is always funny, starts things off, and there will also be a contest where a person can trade in their car for a bike, a new revival stage for performers with 100% solar-powered sound, decorations made from recycled material, and many other bicycle and green attractions and initiatives. For more info, visit newbelgium.com. Haunted Houses: With its warm weather and ample space, Phoenix boasts some of the best haunted houses in the country. Sprinkled throughout the Valley, they offer live actors, state of the art technology, and time-tested scare tactics. I’m going to list more of these throughout the month, but to get you started, here are a few that are open now: • Arizona’s Original Scream Park: Consists of 4 separate attractions: Alice’s House of Nightmares, 3-D Fear Factory, Castle of Darkness and Goldminers Revenge. An all-access pass is $25, so it’s not too bad for a night of fun. For more info, visit azscreampark.com. • Westgate’s Twisted Big Top: Is there anything more intriguing and potentially scary than a circus? A themed attraction, Twisted Big Top is three different haunted houses centered on carnival victims. It is a totally interactive experience from the producers’ of Alice Cooper’s Nightmare and The Nest, and special effects cost $350,000 alone. Tickets range from $13-$45, and it’s worth every penny. For more info, visit frightened.com/ twistedbigtop. • Fear Farm: A corn-field can hide terror better than anyplace. How many movies have scared our pants off using this scenario? Now you can live it at Fear Farm. With 25 acres and four attractions, the $18 ticket is a bargain. For more info, visit fearfarm.com. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

Shake liquid ingredients in ice, serve in a Collins glass, garnish with the lime. This drink evokes sensations of summertime fading, and along with it the hopes and dreams of the ‘almost’ teams of the baseball diamond. This cocktail is bright and lively, like the season’s opening anticipation and delight, but also sour, like the season’s ending note. Enjoy in a reflective, nostalgic, pensive mood.

The 50 foot high “Hollywood” sign atop Beachwod Canyon’s Mt. Lee is the highest peak in Los Angeles. Originally constructed in 1923, it read: “Hollywoodland”. In the 1940’s, when the film business grew, the last four letters were removed! October 2nd - October 8th, 2008

By Randy Montgomery How To Lose Friends and Alienate People is based on the memoir written by Toby Young, a U.K. transplant to New York who lands his dream job of being a writer and contributing editor at Vanity Fair. He had to learn to adjust to the high-pressure world which included backstabbing journalists, arrogant celebrities, and win-at-all costs publicists; all of whom are fighting to get the best story and be the biggest personality. In the film, Simon Pegg plays a fictionalized version of Young. The concept of writing is not foreign to the 38 year-old actor from Gloucester, England, who has published pieces in GQ and Esquire. Pegg is best known for starring in and writing such hits as Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Run Fat Boy, Run. Pegg was so impressed with the screenplay that his help wasn’t needed in the writing department on How To Lose Friends: “The book is a memoir, but (screenwriter) Peter Straughan did a good job turning it into a movie by fictionalizing it, applying it to the structure, and adding the characters you need to move the story along. Peter’s script was so strong, it didn’t need input… and the journey of the character so clear.” Much unlike the character of Sidney, Pegg was easygoing and polite during AZWeeklyMagazine.com

the interview, and even joked about how celebrity can go to some people’s heads. “We are insanely, rabidly interested in this celebrity fluff,” says Pegg, who doesn’t let star power affect him. “It’s (the movie) a timely satire on that ridiculous state of affairs. In the UK, if someone saw me going to see my own film, they’d probably shout at me for being obsessed with myself. When I went to see Hot Fuzz, I snuck into the theatre after the lights had gone out. It was brilliantly funny watching the crowd, because they had no idea I was there.” Pegg still gets a little nervous and even a little star-struck around celebrities, “Particularly people that I admire,” he says with a smile. Working with a cast that included Jeff Bridges and Kirsten Dunst made him feel “…like Sidney in a way, a fish out of water. I was a massive fan of Jeff’s, and as an actor looked up to him. To get to work and interact with him was a real treat. Kirsten is a fantastic talent. She is very professional and a delight to work with. Megan Fox was brilliant in the film. Then there was Jillian Anderson and Danny Houston that I love. I felt privileged.” After playing a role in a movie based on a memoir, Pegg was asked if he would write his own: “What do you mean ‘if?’ I am going to write one, a concept diary sort of thing. I’d have to call it Off the Pegg.”

By Randy Montgomery Nick (Michael Cera) lives in Hoboken (“no jokin’”) and has just been dumped by his girlfriend. He is persuaded to go with his two buddies to perform with their band at a New York City nightspot, but would rather stay home and “take a personal day.” Norah (Kat Dennings) is an easy going daughter of a high-profile record executive. Despite her money and her father’s status, she claims that she does not “subscribe to any label.” Nick and Norah end up bumping into each other after his performance and an odd

friendship is formed. Norah’s best friend Caroline (Ari Graynor), winds up drunk and out of control. Nick’s buddies agree to take Caroline home, while Nick and Norah embark on adventure in his yellow Yugo (which is mistaken for a cab) to find their favorite music group performing in a secret location somewhere in the five Burroughs. Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist is funny and highlights the talent of the young cast, especially that of Ari Graynor who’s supporting role as Caroline is one of the funniest performances of the year. Grab a seat in Nick’s Yugo and enjoy the ride.

By Stan Robinson The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience opens at the IMAX Tempe Theater! As many readers know, I’m an avid watcher of IMAX presentations. A home theatre unit can’t compare to the true IMAX format. There’s a number of retro-fitted IMAX theaters spread throughout the valley with an average cost of $1.5 million to retro fit a current theater. The size of the Tempe IMAX theater (built from the ground up with an average cost of $8 million) features a screen that’s 6 stories tall and 4 stories wide. The sound system of 40 plus speakers throughout the theater, to include behind the perforated screen, provides the “You are there” aspects for picture and sound. Stadium seating provides an unobstructed view, anywhere in the theater.Sequences filmed in 35mm are digitally re-mastered into the IMAX DMR® format with seamless integration, merging both the full IMAX, and IMAX DMR film stocks. The scenes shot in 35mm appear in IMAX DMR (letterbox), while scenes shot with IMAX’s cameras on 70mm film fill the entire IMAX screen! If you haven’t seen The Dark Knight, or haven’t been to an IMAX theater, I’m strongly recommending this experience. Starring Christian Bale,

Stan’s Pick of the Week Blindness If you’re an independent film watcher, you know the work of Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles (City of God, City of Men). His skill as a director is aptly presenting his stories with camera angles and location placement. Blindness stars one of my favorite actresses, Julianne Moore. In 58 projects since 1984, she’s considered one of the hardest working actresses in the industry. In this Sci-Fi thriller, a city population gets “white blindness”, and affected citizens are quarantined

Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Monique Curnen, Ron Dean, and Cillian Murphy. Warner Bros. release. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and some menace. Runtime: 152 min.

LAFF! SECTION

Letter from the Editor

Beau Anderson Always Good for a Giggle My friend and AZ Weekly Associate Editor Beau Anderson recently left the magazine for greener pastures, so I thought to myself, What section of the 10/2 issue would be most appropriate for a tribute? The thought was barely completed when the obvious answer came to mind: LAFF. No doubt; it had to be LAFF. Beau is not an overtly animated guy, nor does he possess refined joke-telling abilities, but a more capable soul to put a grin on your grill or a guffaw in your gut would be harder to find than a big bank with good cash flow. Whether it’s his pantomimed rock climbing exhibitions within Scottsdale’s trendiest clubs, his dead on impressions of drunken Scotsmen, or the unmistakable twinkle in his eye preceding an x-rated play on words when the opportunity presents itself, Beau is perpetually ready to embrace the sillier side of life. He will be sorely missed.

www.seanhoy.com

His work at AZ Weekly displayed a refreshing adherence to clean, clear copy effectively combined with entertaining, often irreverent subject matter. Beau’s ability to engage the reader and provide excellent editorial resulted not only from a polished writing style, but also from his insight into the curious behavioral nuances of ‘everyman’s’ everyday life and his fearless willingness to put these peculiarities into prose. As a creative collaborator, Beau was the best I’ve worked with. He was often solely responsible for producing favorite reader segments ‘This Week in the Future’, ‘Upside/Downside’, ‘Cocktail Corner’, and ‘Bachelor Bites’; and was the primary creative source for the ‘TOYS!’, ‘LAFF’, ‘CLUB’, and ‘DINE’ sections. Never needing his hand held, never looking for shortcuts or handouts, and never exhibiting a shortage of ideas, Beau represented the very best of what AZ Weekly Magazine offers to its advertisers and readers: Entertainment wrapped in a package of intelligence and style.

www.seanhoy.com

And though he has left the magazine, Beau Anderson continues to represent the very best of what people can be: Kind, caring, endearingly crazy, and unconditionally giving. Thank you, buddy, and good luck. -krl

More Folks, Less Go

This is an interesting look at the convergence that is apparently taking place between the increasing population of Maricopa County and the gallons of gasoline sold per county resident. As the population of our city has grown more than any other in the country recently, the number of gallons sold per year per person has held relatively steady, until 2005 when it showed a noticeable drop. More recent ‘gallonage’ data was not available, so this illustration of the downward spending on fuel doesn’t necessarily reflect the beginning of higher prices at the pump. Could it perhaps be a reflection of the lateral spread and settlement of the area’s population? Meaning people would previously have to travel longer distances for goods and services, but now that more areas of each suburb are wholly ‘self-sufficient’, people don’t have to travel as extensively. Fuel for thought, certainly…

Lang joins a superstar lineup of musical masters in what has been said to be “a music festival unlike any other in the US.” Lang had a guitar in his hands early on in life, and at 15, while other kids his age were just hoping to get a driving permit, he was topping the Billboard ‘New Artist’ chart with his first album. In 2007, Lang’s fifth and most recent studio album, Turn Around, won the Grammy award for ‘Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album.’ When asked what his second career choice would be, it is ever so clear that Lang’s passion lies in making music. “I don’t know what I’d do,” he admits. “I’ve been incredibly blessed to be able to do what I love for a living!” For more information, log onto www.johnnylang.com. Blues Legends Spending Time in the Desert

Phoenix- The red-hot, rockin’ Texas blues band Smokin’ Joe Kubek and Bnois King will celebrate the release of their debut Alligator CD Blood Brothers, with a live performance in Phoenix on Friday, October 10th at the Rhythm Room. Kubek’s raucous roadhouse fretwork is expertly complimented by the equally fiery guitar and soulful vocals of King. With nearly 20 years together and literally thousands of live performances under their collective belt, the two create a one-two punch of raw, tough, Lone Star blues-rock. Recorded with Kubek and King’s road-honed band, the album captures all of their legendary live energy and highlights the seemingly telepathic interplay between the musicians. The Rhythm Room is located at 1019 E. Indian School Rd. in Phoenix. The show starts at 9pm and tickets are $10. Call (602) 265-4842for tickets, or visit www.rhythmroom.com for more information. Guitar Shorty will be performing at the Festival in the Desert on Sunday, October 12th. Shorty is touring in support of his latest release, We The People, which received the 2007 Blues Music Award for “Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year.” Credited with influencing both Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy, Shorty has been electrifying audiences for five decades with his supercharged live shows and his incendiary recordings that began in 1957. Guitar Shorty’s performance times are 4:50pm and 6:25pm. The Festival in the Desert will be at 5350 E. Marriott Dr. in Phoenix. A 3 day pass is $195, or admission for Friday October 10th is $55 and the weekend pass for Saturday, October 11th and Sunday, October 12th is $85. Call (602) 267-1600 or visit www. jwfestivalinthedesert.com for more information.

Rare Solo Performance by Peter Hammill

40

Phoenix- Peter Hammill will be performing at The Rhythm Room on Thursday, October 2nd at 7.30pm. This ultra rare solo performance will mark the first time in 25 years Peter has performed in Arizona. He began his career as the singer and songwriter for Van der Graaf Generator, the chaotic, scary, and highly influential underground group of the 70s. The adventurous attitude that they brought to their music remains a feature of Peter’s material to this day. His work has always been independent and uncompromising, and it is perhaps because of this that he has been cited as a major influence by so many other artists. In addition to his output of 26 solo recordings of songs, he has also written music for ballet, film, and television. He continues to tour throughout Europe and many other countries world-wide, both under his own name and, lately, with the reunited and stripped-down VdGG. Advance General Admission tickets priced at $30 are available to purchase at www. livenation.com, all Ticketmaster outlets, October 2nd - October 8th, 2008

Support Spanky Spangler’s Hollywood Stunt Show

Phoenix- At the Manzanita Speedway on Saturday, October 11th, come and see why they call Spanky Spangler “the falling star”, “the original fall guy”, and the #1 stuntman in the world. With over 22,000 stunts and over 50 world records already to his credit, Spangler is among the world’s most revered crazy wackos, and is coming to the Valley alongside his pro stunt team for a big charity fundraiser to benefit the Future is Now Foundation (www.futureis-now.com) and the 100 Club (www.100club.org). Spanky has traveled the world and has been seen by over a billion people in his career. Evel Knievel once said, “Spanky Spangler is the greatest stuntman of all time.” Come out and support Spanky and support two very good causes. The Manzanita Speedway is located at the intersection of Broadway and 35th Ave. Gates open at 5.30pm, show starts at 7pm. For further information, please call (602) 276-7575, (602) 843-8587, or log onto www.spankyspangler.com.

Diamondbacks: We’ll Get ‘em Next Year

Phoenix- The Arizona Diamondbacks were eliminated from playoff contention last week after they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals for the third time in the four game away series. The 12-3 pounding turned out to be the nail in the coffin for the D-Backs, whose NL West rival, the LA Dodgers, secured a playoff birth without having to swing a bat or turn a double play. It was a solid year for the Diamondbacks, considering how often it seemed they couldn’t get much going at the plate. What momentum could be generated this year was exhausted a few weeks before the end of the season, but one more year of experience for this young, extremely talented, and unselfish group of ball players should see them occupying the top spot in the NL West for 2009.

Cards Get ‘Favred’

42

Phoenix- Brett Favre and the gruesomely-dressed New York Jets ‘threw back’ the Arizona Cardinals to their too-frequently accustomed state of mediocrity and disappointment last Sunday, putting a whuppin’ on the Red Birds to the tune of a 5635 massacre. The game was over in the second quarter, when Wisconsin’s favorite deity, Favre, connected with WR Laveranues Coles for 3 TDs on the way to a 34-0 mark at the half. Cardinals QB Kurt Warner (40-57, 472yds, 2TDs, 3INTs) turned the ball over twice in the period- once on an interception and again from a blind side sackand the Jets converted on each mistake. The Cardinals scored 21 unanswered points in the 3rd quarter on three short rushing TDs- two by RB Edgerrin James and the other by rookie RB Tim Hightower- to make the game briefly interesting. However, Favre threw three more scoring throws in the 4th quarter to make his total a Jets record and personal mark of 6 TD passes. October 2nd - October 8th, 2008

ARIZONA SPORTS SCHEDULES

Submitted by Kevin Pakos, producer and host of Amazing Performances, airing M-F, 8-8:30am, on KXXT 1010 AM and live online worldwide.

Naturally Strong

Tom Manno stands at 6’4, weighs in at 305 pounds, is over 50 years old, and has been lifting and training for nearly 35 years. He currently can bench press over 720 pounds, is getting stronger every year. He owns over 90 American Records and over 60 World Records.  Ready for the real eye-popper? He has always trained drug free. The New York native grew up with severe malnutrition, not being able to keep food down. At the age of two he contracted spinal meningitis and nearly died. The doctors said he would grow up small and be weak all his life, but Tom turned out to be an All American football player at Saguaro High in Arizona as well as state champ in the shot put and in wrestling. Further, he played football for the University of Arizona and the Dallas Cowboys. His goal is to set world records in every federation in the world, even those that do not police drug use.

When he is asked what his secret is, he replies, “There is no secret; it is just a nutritious diet, healthy living, and making sure I get the right fuel to work out and keep in the best shape I can. Arnold Schwarzenegger was hosting one of his expos a few years ago and was stunned that Tom Manno- the only “clean lifter in the meet- was so dominant. He made a point to speak to Tom and find out more about his amazing achievements. At an age when most men are trying to find ways to do less, Manno is trying to set world records in power lifting that men half his age may never break. MySpace Music Launches At Last

After months of hype and anticipation, MySpace Music launched last week. Users can create and share playlists, stream any song or album available on the site for free, and purchase music via Amazon.com. However, some of the expected features, such as the ability to buy tickets or artist merchandise, are missing from MySpace Music. More features are expected over time, but critics note that this site is not far off from what Imeem and Last.fm offer their users.

Jay-Z, Stargate Enter StarRoc Frontier

Jay-Z and Grammy nominated production duo Stargate have officially announced the formation of a new label called StarRoc. Essentially, Jay’s Roc Nation venture with Live Nation has partnered with Stargate to encompass both a music label and publishing company, StarRoc Music Publishing. StarRoc, based in New York, aims to find new talent and develop artists through mutually beneficial global partnerships which include music distribution, publishing, touring, and merchandising. Norwegian duo Stargate, comprised of Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel S. Eriksen, was responsible for producing #1 songs such as “Irreplaceable” by Beyoncé, “Take A Bow” by Rihanna, and “Closer” by Ne-Yo.

Ice Cube Attacks Gang Violence

Rapper Ice Cube’s hard-hitting new video features images of the innocents killed in gang violence. The promo for “Why Me?” begins with tearful recollections from those who have lost loved ones to street shootings in Los Angeles. The video then features the outspoken rap star walking through a desert picking up photographs of those slain just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. The anti-war promo also features footage from refugee camps in Darfur, Sudan, and warzones in the Middle East. Ice Cube ends the song with the line “(This is) dedicated to all the (people) that’s dead and don’t know why, who wanna look at the one that shot ‘em and ask the question: ‘Why me, homie?’

Denny’s Shakes Things Up

Denny’s introduces a new line-up of chefs in their kitchen with the launch of the Rockstar menu. Top musicians, such as the All-American Rejects, Taking Back Sunday, Plain White T’s, and the Eagles of Death Metal, join Denny’s to create the new Denny’s Rockstar Menu presented by Dr Pepper. The bands, along with Denny’s Culinary Innovation Chef Andrew Dismore, invented dishes that are ideal for late-night dining with friends and groups. The new Rockstar menu complements the All-Nighter menu introduced earlier this year. Denny’s strives to appeal to its late-night crowd with a whole new vibe from 10pm to 5am, featuring alternative rock music playing through the restaurant and servers sporting T-shirts and jeans instead of their usual uniforms.

Exhibition Baseball Game Celebrates Museum Anniversary

A pair of retro Arizona baseball teams will help Sharlot Hall Museum celebrate its 80th anniversary with a vintage 1928 baseball exhibition game on Sunday, October 26th, starting at 1pm at Ken Lindley Field. The game features The Phoenix Senators vs. The Bisbee Bees in a family-friendly atmosphere. Both the Senators and the Bees are modeled after actual minor league teams that existed during the 20th Century; the Senators began playing in 1915 and the Bees in 1928. Both are non-profit, independent groups of players who have obtained vintage-style uniforms and equipment, including old-style bats, balls, and gloves. Actually, the gloves are based on pre-1900 styles, but are close enough to the 1920’s gloves that the visual effect will be similar for fans. Most of the players are well-versed on the history of baseball in Arizona. Following 19th Century standards, the players’ hats have no logos and their uniforms have no numbers or names, although the team names appear on the front of the jerseys. In addition to raising money for Sharlot Hall Museum, the teams seek to increase interest in the history of Arizona baseball and to “inspire Prescott residents to start their own team,” says Neil Singh, captain of the Senators. Admission is by donation. Proceeds from the event will benefit Sharlot Hall Museum, which was founded in 1928 and is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Ken Lindley

Field is located at 702 E. Gurley St. in Prescott. For further information, contact Singh at (602) 697-2405 or Ryan Flahive at Sharlot Hall Museum, (928) 445-3122. Both teams also maintain blogs at phoenixsenators. org and bisbeebees.com. The Sharlot Hall Museum is located at 415 W. Gurley St. in downtown Prescott. More information about the game and other Museum events is available online at www.sharlot.org.

Sharlot Hall Museum Hosts 30th Annual Folk Music Festival

More than 150 local and international performers will be participating at the 30th Annual Folk Music Festival to be held October 4th and 5th at the Sharlot Hall Museum. Delivering musical magic ranging from bluegrass to regimental to gospel, artists will enjoy playing space at 6 venues on the beautiful Museum grounds, offering concerts, musical workshops, and dancing. In addition to the many scheduled performances, the Folk Music Festival is renowned for its impromptu jam sessions featuring musicians from different groups and styles mixing and mingling with visitors. Guests are invited to join the Sunday morning gospel sing-along, learn to play the harmonica, or delve into the art of songwriting. They are also encouraged to bring their own acoustic musical instruments for workshops focusing on guitars, banjos, ukuleles, and more. Each day’s festivities will start at 10am and end at 5pm. Sharlot Hall Museum is located at 415 W. Gurley, 2 blocks west of Courthouse Square. For more information, please log onto www. sharlot.org.

High-Tech Beauty for the Girl on a Budget Scottsdale- These days, putting your best face forward requires a little more than before-bed moisturizing. In the beauty world, women have replaced their creams and scrubs with lasers and light therapy. Unfortunately, the cutting edge world of beauty can be a pricy place to wonder. Although high-tech laser treatments might seem unattainable, there are many undiscovered ways to save money. Five-star medical spas are now teaming up with nationally recognized cosmetic laser and medical aesthetics colleges to offer procedures designed for the girl on a budget. Under the supervision of first-class industry educators, spa guests are treated to the same glamorous experience at more than half the cost. During these challenging economic times, here are a few ways beauty-conscious women can go glam without breaking the bank:

Invisible Ink: When the romance fades and the tattoo remains, jaded lovers are left with permanent reminders of love gone wrong. Thanks to advancements in laser technology, lingering boyfriend body art does not have to haunt you forever. In just a few treatments, his name will be no more, leaving skin pure once again (Physicians Skin Institute: $50+; Retail $300+).

50

October 2nd - October 8th, 2008

Zap Away Blemishes: A woman’s skin does not always reflect her youthful spirit. Photofacial treatments align a woman’s inner confidence with her outer appearance by correcting fine lines, uneven pigmentation, and sun damage. Non-invasive photofacials erase damage by manipulating light to stimulate skin cells to create natural collagen, which is an important element in keeping skin looking young (Physicians Skin Institute: $75+; Retail: $420+).

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Throw out your Razor: Three bladed razors for women are no longer the hottest thing to hit the market. The battle against bikini line bumps has met their ultimate match in laser hair removal. Unlike painful electrolysis, plucking, and waxing, laser hair removal ensures real results by attacking unwanted hair at the root (Physicians Skin Institute: $50+; Retail: $420+). It’s All About Commitment We’ve been answering a lot of questions at the salon about styling long hair and also about coloring from the drug store shelf. As far as the coloring goes…Don’t. You might as well have an elementary school student fill in for you at the nuclear power plant. See a professional. A bad box color can cost you 2-3 times more to fix than having it done by a professional in the first place. On the subject of styling long hair, there is no magic potion, or ceramic tourmaline blah, blah, blah that will make your hair look like the model on the cover of your favorite fashion magazine. It takes time, practice, and the right advice on technique to get the results you are looking for. Go see someone who gives a damn.

Redefining the role of your hairdresser

Gimmicks are for amateurs, and for God’s sake, cut your hair into something that you can both manage and be confident in. Long hair styling has been my forte for the better part of my career. It’s been my experience though, that most women hang on to their long hair for the wrong reasons, mostly because it’s safe. Safe is for followers. Be that person who is making a statement about themselves that is actually saying something cool and interesting, or stop complaining that your hair never looks truly great. It’s All About Commitment Lynn An old-school hairdresser with a passion for quality and service, Lynn has spent the last thirteen-plus years working with clients from all walks of life. He cares deeply about each client, and how they view themselves.

Medi-WeightLoss Success Part 1 Barbie Jonas

Barbie Jonas had unfortunately tried far too many diets in the past, each with a similar resut: not what she had hoped for. A friend recommended that she get on a medically supervised diet plan, one that had been proven. That plan was MediWeightloss Clinic in Scottsdale. At 44 and a mother of three, Barbie decided that for her own health reasons she’d better try it. “The staff at Medi-Weightloss Clinic was so enthusiastic and helpful. I had confidence in the program and in my doctor,” she said. Jonas also felt reassured that blood tests, EKG’s and an assortment of healthy supplements accompany the diet. On her first day she weighed in at 204lbs., and set a goal to lose 50lbs. in 12 weeks. Her only apprehension came when she saw what the diet’s recommended caloric intake was...a modest 500 calories! “How could anyone be expected to survive on that?” she thought. “Our clients not only ‘survive’, but ‘thrive’”, says Medi-Weightloss co-owner Sarah Brown. “Most people can beleive how easy it is to be on the diet we supervise. It’s a lot more that just counting calories,” said Brown. Surprisingly, they were right. Within 24 hours, Barbie’s hunger was gone and she found it easy t o resist the junk foods that had caused her weight to climb. After only 7 days, she had literally melted 8lbs. of fat from her body and 2 more lbs. had vanished in week #2. Her weightloss came effortlessly and while eating a variety of healthy foods. “I thought it wouldn’t work at first. I was wrong. I can see that I am well on my way to making the lifestyle and chemical chnages in my body that will bring me to my goal weight in time for swimsuit season,” said Jonas.
