a raise, so I was underpaid. I was afraid to ask for a date, so I didn’t have any. I was afraid I’d be rejected, so I didn’t bother to apply for admission to a major university… so, I settled for being undereducated.

MACK NEWTON ON… The Threat of Fear Imagine four frogs sitting on a log. Three frogs decide to jump off. How many frogs are left sitting on the log? If, like so many others, you said one…that answer is incorrect. The correct answer is four! How? Because deciding to jump and jumping are two different things. It takes courage to actually jump. Lots of people can say they’re going to jump, but you have to overcome your fears to jump. Some have been saying they’re going to jump for so long that they believe that they’ve actually jumped. Fear has caused them to become delusional. The greatest threat in human life is fear. Fear is the cause of more unhappiness and lack of fulfillment than almost anything else. It is a treacherous enemy that will paralyze you, steal your peace of mind, make you doubt your possibilities, steal your dreams and actually enslave you to a thought process of low or negative expectations. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “We are afraid of truth, afraid of fortune, afraid of death, and afraid of each other.” I think we are just afraid. We’re afraid to fail and to make it worse, we’re afraid to succeed. Fear is the primary cause of all negative emotions and certainly the main culprit behind most problems in human relationships. But, the most damage that fear has had in my life is that it’s caused me to settle for far less than I am capable of. I was afraid to ask for

F-E-A-R… Fantasized Experiences Appearing Real. The only good thing about fear, if there is a good thing, is that it’s only in your head. Fear is a learned response and because of this, it can be unlearned. These learned responses were programmed into you prior to the age of six. These fears definitely set the upper and lower limits on your performances. This is where courage comes into play. No one is fearless. The ones who appear fearless simply face their fears and proceed anyway. They summon their courage. You can summon yours as well. You have it… everyone has it, you just need to summon it when you need it most. How? Since the opposite of fear is love, it’s important that we have more love in our lives than fear, especially self-love or self-esteem. The more you like or love yourself, the less you fear failure and rejection. The more you like yourself, the more likely you are to reach out and take the risks that will lead you to success and happiness. The more you like and love yourself, the easier it is for you to summon the courage to face a scary situation or any situation where the two words “I can’t” rear their ugly head. Start the journey to eliminating the negative effects of fear and to sincere selfliking by repeating the powerful words; “I like myself! I like myself!” over and over dozens of times every day. If you start this process, soon you will start to feel fantastic… all the time! -Mack Newton Mack Newton is an 8th Degree Black Belt, Senior Master Instructor, Global Tae Kwon-Do Federation International and Chairman of the World Technical Committee

They Don’t Even Know Me-They Could at Least Get to Know Me Before They Reject Me! We’re all guilty of it at some point. Whether it was to a person’s face, sitting safely behind a computer screen, or with the thoughts in our head, we’ve judged a person before really getting to know a person. I remember when I was in high school and shopping for formal dresses my mom would always go with me. There were so many times she would bring something to the dressing room and I would look at her and be like really mom that’s not even cute, but she would always respond the same way-Try it on! Looking back I can’t think of a dress that I wore to a formal that my mom DIDN’T pick out. Why? Because she always made me try everything on, even if I thought it looked bad on a hanger. The same goes when it comes to dating. Now, I understand that everyone has their morals and faith and those can’t be compromised, but can you look yourself in the mirror and that you’ve never said no to a person based on their looks, age, profession or income? Take success couple Michael and Nancy for example. Nancy had it in her head that she would only date someone five years older or five years younger than she, and she wasn’t going to budge. When browsing through profiles one day she came across Michael’s profile, she was intrigued by Michael and selected him. What she didn’t realize when she was picked her filtering options she didn’t put in an age group, Michael was 10 years older than her. Nancy contributes their relationship to fate. Before deciding against someone who has selected to meet you give them one shot. By joining a dating service you made the decision to make a change in your dating life; you weren’t meeting the right people. How can you expect to see a change when you’re not willing to adjust your expectations? You have to change your expectations and possibly make an adjustment to your “Perfect Mate Check-List” to actually find the relationship that you want, and when you do make that adjustment that person you thought wouldn’t live up to your ‘standards’ just might surpass them. On the other hand—maybe you keep hearing the word no because you’re not going after the right people. Again, you too have to make adjustments to the people you’re trying to date. If you’re a 65 year old man going after 20 years olds at the bar and it isn’t working, chances are it’s not going to work anywhere. Sometimes by dating someone that you wouldn’t typically date, your eyes will open up to new possibilities. So next time someone asks you out, before you say ‘no’ ask yourself why not. Why am I declining to give this person a shot? If your reasons are ligament, like different religions, then go ahead, but if your reason is “eh-they’re very good looking” or “well they work as a _____, so they probably don’t make enough money,” stop and look at yourself and ask- “How would I feel if someone said no to me based on that reasoning.”

COLUMNISTS

Filmmaker Jamie Meltzer (‘Informant’) By Stan Robinson

“You’re very gracious in your compliment that it’s a powerful piece and watched it twice, its maybe not so much that it’s a powerful piece and I thank you. I think with ‘Informant’, you don’t know what to think necessarily, and at the end of the film you as the viewer have been through so much, it’s taken one on so many twists and turns which is a different experience than a lot of documentary films where they meet the audience where they’re at and don’t challenge them to look at their own preconceptions, look at their own ideologies, look at the way they’re thinking about the world, and kind of unsettle it a bit!

all of the participants. My goal for the people watching it is thinking critically about the film itself, and what is the film trying to say. It’s telling a story, a very usual story, and like you, some may want to watch it twice as they try to ‘wrap their heads around’ the overall theme”. – Jamie Meltzer

Randy Montgomery’s reactions reveal the emotional intuition of an average moviegoer. With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. RANDY MONTGOMERY

“I think the film sets the stage where people can question and make up their own minds about how they feel about the infiltration of the FBI into political activist groups. It’s really a psychological thriller as I usually describe it with a huge political dimension to it. And more importantly, it doesn’t appeal only to one side of the political spectrum. I think it’s of interest to anyone

JOSEPH J. AIRDO

“Informant” is an amazing story of an incredibly unlikely transformation of a radical leftist activist to an FBI informant and later to a right wing Tea Party activist. There is really no other subject like Brandon Darby that I know of, and there’s a lot of psychological dimension to it but there’s also a whole political dimension that raises questions about the use of informants, and the surveillance of society where government is looking into what activist groups are doing.

BRADFORD UNLEASHED Arizona State linebacker Carl Bradford looks to reach new heights this season

recorded just one tackle and looked more like a player trying to figure things out than one using his football instincts. But it didn’t take long for the light to go on.

By Byron Kline

“I wasn’t prepared for it in the beginning. I was kind of hesitant and didn’t know what to expect and everything was new to me, so I was trying to play cautious,” said Bradford. “It was probably during the UCLA game when I was like, ‘Okay, I got this. This is what I’m made for.’ So I just tried to expand it to my full limit and go all out and be the best I can be at that position.”

Playing alongside two All-Americans in Will Sutton and Jaxon Hood can make it difficult to stand out, but that’s just what Arizona State defensive playmaker Carl Bradford managed to do in 2012. As a first year starter, he established himself as a key player for a resurgent Sun Devil defense that statistically ranked as one of the nation’s best. Now, as he prepares for his second season in his new role, Bradford’s looking to break out and leave his own mark.

Bradford finished the year with 81 tackles, 20.5 tackles for a loss, and 11.5 sacks. He is one of just two returning players in the country this season who posted more than 80 tackles, 20 tackles for a loss, and 10 sacks in 2012.

Watching him now, you wouldn’t suspect that Carl Bradford had never played defense before arriving at Arizona State. As a senior at Norco High School in Riverside, California, Bradford was rated as one of the nation’s top fullbacks, where he rushed for 884 yards and 14 touchdowns. But former ASU Head Coach Dennis Erickson saw something else in him — a physical, attacking player with all of the tools and ability to be an elite linebacker at the college level.

Bradford also forced three fumbles and recovered two others — leading the Sun Devils in both — and recorded his first career interception in his SoCal homecoming against USC. “I wasn’t surprised just because last season was his first year playing defense, really,” said unanimous AllAmerican defensive end and teammate Will Sutton on Bradford’s breakout season. “He played a little linebacker before, but the way he shot out onto the scene wasn’t a surprise to us, because we could see it every day, all the things he’s capable of.”

“I never played defense, not even one down, in my high school career, so for Coach Erickson to give me a shot at linebacker was really a blessing,” recalled Bradford, who admittedly struggled adjusting to his new role after redshirting as a freshman. “At first I sucked, honestly. I sucked at linebacker. I didn’t know what assignments to read or anything about the position that first year. “After that, they moved me to defensive end and I think I did a little bit better,” Bradford continued. “But then Coach Graham came in and put the two positions into one and ever since then I’ve felt way more comfortable.” Around Tempe it’s known as the “Devil backer,” a hybrid of the linebacker and defensive end positions, designed to allow Bradford to patrol the line of scrimmage, confuse the opposition’s quarterback, and wreak havoc at will. “We talk about having a hybrid defense, so for us, Carl’s number one because

Photo by Steve Rodriguez he must be able to play extremely well at two positions,” explained Arizona State defensive coordinator Paul Randolph. “He must be able to stop the run and be a force in our pass defense. It takes a special athlete and a special football player because he must be athletic enough to be a linebacker and mentally tough enough to be a defensive lineman.” At 6 -foot-1, 245 pounds and teeming with raw athleticism, Bradford instantly became the ideal candidate for Arizona State’s new defensive scheme

predicated on misdirection and attacking the ball. “First of all, he has character,” said Randolph. “Second, he’s smart. Carl’s extremely smart. He’s disciplined, tough, and he loves playing the game, so he is what we want all of our players to be.”

“I think you could see last season that a lot of teams were double-teaming Will and that kind of gave me an advantage with the one-on-one blocks, and you don’t want to do that,” said Bradford. “So it really sort of created an advantage for me to get my sacks.”

Like any player developing into a new position, the learning curve was steep for Bradford and the progress was gradual. In the team’s 2012 season opener against Northern Arizona, he

The Sun Devils finished second in the nation in sacks in 2012 with 52 as a team. Bradford and Sutton helped pace that attack, with 24 sacks between them, providing ASU with one of the most potent pass rushing duos in all of college football.

same side?” remarked Sutton. “What’s your blocking scheme going to be? Are you going to put a tight end on Carl? I don’t think you want to put a tight end on Carl. Are you going to come in and max protect against me? Because then it’s one-on-one on the backside and we’ve got another two defensive linemen that can get to the quarterback as well.” Even after such a special 2012 season, Bradford and Sutton are looking to raise the bar higher in 2013. Officially, the NCAA record for sacks in a season is held by former Sun Devil Terrell Suggs, who rang up 24 sacks in 2002. But if Bradford and Sutton have their way, that record won’t last much longer. After Suggs visited the team during one if its summer workouts, the duo made a pledge to unseat the Arizona State great as the single season sacks record holder. “I really believe I can break the record and Will really believes he can break the record. We both said we want 25, so I said, ‘Okay, let’s get 50,’” remarked Bradford. Bradford’s amazing breakout season, which has landed him on a handful of preseason awards watch lists for 2013, including the Butkus Award, Nagurski Trophy, and the Bednarik Award, is a testament to a player who has tirelessly worked to transform himself into the ultimate defensive playmaker at his position. As ASU began its fall camp in August, Bradford was recognized as a member of the Dirty Dozen, an award given to the 12 players who demonstrated the greatest commitment to the team’s offseason workout regimen. He posted personal bests for his vertical jump (38 inches), power clean (400 pounds), and squats (605 pounds), while being described simply as a “freak,” by Sun Devil strength & conditioning coach Shawn Griswold. But Bradford’s story isn’t without pain. Like many young boys growing up, Bradford idolized his father, Roy, a man who taught him how to play football and always encouraged him to be the best each day. During ASU’s spring break in April, Bradford’s father invited him out to Louisiana to meet some of his family members that he had yet to meet. “The whole day he took me around my aunts and cousins and that whole side

of the family,” recalled Bradford. “There was one brother that I hadn’t met and we were on our way home and we were like, ‘Oh it’s getting late. I don’t know if we’re going to be able to.’ And he was like, ‘No, we need to go. You need to meet your brother that you’ve never met.’ So we decided to go to the bingo hall where he works. We go in and we’re all just having a good time and that’s where it happened.” What had been one of the happiest moments of his life quickly became one of his saddest. Bradford’s father suffered a heart attack in the bingo hall, and despite Bradford’s best efforts to resuscitate him before the paramedics arrived, he passed away in his son’s arms. “We talked every night, even if we didn’t have anything to talk about,” said Bradford. “Just, ‘Hey, how’s it going?” You know, father-son talk. We were really close and man, it just breaks my heart. To not be able to call him anymore or anything, it’s just really hard.” Bradford returned to Tempe after the funeral, re-joining his Sun Devil teammates and coaches. He declined any additional time off, instead choosing to focus on football, committing himself to becoming the player his father always taught him to be. “When I came back, they just showered me with their love and it’s a blessing to have them as a family as well,” said Bradford about his teammates and coaches. “Even before his passing, I always played for my family and I always played for him, just to help them have a better life. That was always my motivation in the beginning. So when this happened, it just made me want to do more and be the best I can be, so I transfer that over as my motivation.” Playing in his father’s memory, Bradford and the Sun Devils begin their quest for a Pac-12 championship in year two under Head Coach Todd Graham this fall. With a heavy heart and raised motivation, Bradford looks to unleash his full talents in 2013, fulfilling his promise to his father to be the best and ultimately reach new heights. HELP ON THE WAY? Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback Carson Palmer gets a chance to resurrect his career and help fix the worst offense in the NFL By Zack Cimini In the National Football League, signs of fight in December ultimately can save a head coach’s job. Last December, the Arizona Cardinals traveled east to face the New York Jets. Just ten games earlier, the team trekked to Foxborough and upset the New England Patriots in week two. What a difference three months makes. The Cardinals and Jets bumbled and stumbled in the sloppiest game of the 2012 season, an insufferable 7-6 torture-fest that only the stoutest of diehards could stomach.

– nine of them in 2012. The Cardinals managed just four touchdowns of more than 20 yards in 2012. At 33, Palmer will be the eldest statesman in the NFC West, where young quarterbacks like San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick (25), Seattle’s Russell Wilson (24) and Sam Bradford (25) have made the division one of the toughest in the NFL. “I don’t think I’ve played my best football

Arians looks like the guy who can get them both clicking in the offensive scheme. Last year, he filled the role of interim head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, and helped guide rookie quarterback Andrew Luck to a smashing rookie debut — including a postseason playoff berth. Arians has spent his career developing quarterbacks, including Luck, Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger. They’ve all excelled at stretching the football field for big pass plays. Palmer’s ability to throw deep

It was a brutal display by both starting quarterbacks — Ryan Lindley (10 of 31 for 72 yards and 1 interception) and Mark Sanchez (10 of 21 for 97 yards and 3 interceptions) — that seemingly set back offensive progress and philosophy eight decades. Arizona scored just two field goals, set up by two of Sanchez’s turnovers. Ten of the Cardinals’ 14 drives were three-and-outs. Did the Cardinals recover from that offensive debacle? No. The following week, a 59-0 drubbing at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks was the coup de grâce for head coach Ken Whisenhunt and general manager Rod Graves, both of who were canned after the 2012 campaign mercifully ended. New GM Steve Keim and head coach Bruce Arians were quick to upgrade the quarterback position, sending a seventh-round conditional draft pick to the Oakland Raiders in return for veteran Carson Palmer on April 2, 2013. Is Palmer the answer for a team starving for a quality quarterback since Kurt Warner retired in 2009? Palmer’s 2012 statistics – 23 touchdowns and more than 4,000 passing yards – were a welcome sight for Cardinals fans, who endured a combined total of 2,283 yards, 11 touchdowns and 21 picks from the entire 2012 quarterback-by-committee: Ryan Lindley, Kevin Kolb, John Skelton and Brian Hoyer. During his season and a half with Oakland, Palmer threw 15 touchdown passes of 20 yards or more

Photo by Gene Lower yet,” he said. “I think there is a lot of optimism and we’re going to find out this season.” There is guarded optimism that the combination of Arians and Palmer will revive the Cardinals offense. After all, when you’re ranked dead last in the NFL, there’s no place to go but up. That said, Palmer arrives in Arizona with some playmakers on the roster. Larry Fitzgerald is still an elite NFL receiver and is looking forward to putting last season, statistically the worst of his career, in the rearview mirror. Former first-round pick Michael Floyd is looking to improve from a rough rookie campaign, but he’s still considered an immense talent. “Fitz is exactly what I expected,” Palmer said about Fitzgerald. “I have very high expectations coming in. He is a great worker, teammate, competitor, very smart and mature.”

will dramatically change the Cardinals offense. “It’s great having Carson, and that veteran leadership,” Fitzgerald said. “There is a presence about Carson – when he steps in there, he looks you in the eye and knows what he wants to do. There is never any indecision with him. That’s great to have that kind of stability with him.” Of course, as last season proved, injuries can derail any offense. So the Cardinals inked backup quarterback Drew Stanton as insurance. While he lacks Palmer’s skill set, Stanton is considered a smart veteran with a strong arm. Palmer has not been injury-free throughout his career. In a 2006 wildcard playoff game, he tore up his ACL on the first play against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Then, in 2008, Palmer missed three-quarters of the season with an elbow injury. Last year in Oakland, he missed a couple regular season games with broken ribs.

Arians trusts his two capable quarterbacks. And if we’ve learned anything by watching the NFL over the past decade, it’s that power shifts occur quickly. But one thing has remained constant: If you don’t have a solid quarterback, you don’t have a foundation for success. The Cardinals are hoping the 2013 season can play out like 2005, when the team took a chance on veteran Kurt Warner to revive his career. Within four seasons, Warner led the team and its fans on a magical ride to the Super Bowl, and came within seconds, and a tip-toe touchdown catch by Santonio Holmes, of defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers for the franchise’s first Super Bowl win. While those goals are lofty, there is hope that Palmer can be the triggerman for an improved offense. And with the parity in the NFL, that’s all a team can ask for. AZSAL Fast Facts • Last season, Carson Palmer ranked 8th amongst quarterbacks in the NFL for completions over forty yards with ten. The Cardinals ranked last in the NFL in with just three. • Palmer stands 6’5. Only Josh Freeman and Joe Flacco at 6’6 are taller amongst NFL starting quarterbacks. • Palmer holds the Bengals record for most completions in a season with 373 in 2007, and holds or is tied for 12 total records in Bengals franchise history. • At USC, Palmer became only the second USC quarterback to start as a true freshman in 1999. He went on to win the Heisman Trophy in 2002, and his jersey was retired by USC. • Carson Palmer’s brother, Jordan, is a backup quarterback for the Chicago Bears. They’re the only brother quarterback combination in the NFL besides Eli and Peyton Manning. For more great sport and lifestyle info, read AZ Sports & Lifestyle Magazine, www.AZSAL.com

A sure sign of age in a power hitter is his sudden willingness to hit to the opposite field. It’s often born from a recognition that bat speed isn’t what it once was, and so instead of trying to pull a pitch into the stands – and probably grounding out weakly or popping out – he’ll stroke it the other way. That’s the transition Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has made over the past few seasons, and the result is a lefty slugger who is still productive in his late 30s. In his younger years, the nine-time All-Star known as Big Papi was one of those lefties against whom opposing teams would regularly employ a shift – stacking defenders on one side of the field to close off hit possibilities. But as his batting average dropped in 2008-09, he recognized he was leaving hits on the table by ignoring the left side of the field. So he shortened his stroke, took pitches the other way and prospered. Like any species that survives, he adapted. And while he hasn’t put up the monster power numbers he did in his prime years of 2004-07, his last four campaigns have been productive ones, as he’s topped 100 RBIs and a .300 batting average three times while averaging around 28 homers. And that’s counting a 2012 season that was ended in July by an Achilles heel injury. Ortiz and the Red Sox can be seen in action this week in the American League Division Series, which continues Sunday Oct. 6, on TBS.

BEER STYLES PART 5

We seem to be moving right along with our review of beer styles. So let’s move on to the wrap up of the Ale styles. And since I had nowhere else to put them, I am including ciders and meads as well.

American Wheat - An American twist to the German Wheat beers, this style can be produced as an ale or lager and covers a range of colors, normally golden to amber, but sometimes darker like the German Dunkelweizens. Unlike a German Hefeweizen, the American Wheat is often (but not always) filtered and lacks the ester (normally banana) and phenolic (normally clove) aromas and flavors obtained with German yeast strains. The malt component normally (but not always) consists of 50% or more wheat and the hopping can be light to heavy, more often falling in the moderate to heavy range. The flavors of American wheats are diverse with various combinations of graininess, malt sweetness, hop bitterness, and citrusy character, and acidic and / or dry mouthfeels are often achieved. Wheat Beers - German Wheats Berliner Weisse - The Berliner Weisse is a sharply sour German ale based on pilsner and wheat malts, although the wheat content is normally well below 50% (~30%). The Berliner Weisse is typically clear to hazy golden in color with a strong initial head that fades rapidly. The body is light, the carbonation high, and the alcohol content low (normally 3.5% or lower), and these beers are generally regarded as refreshing with a firm wheat backbone in the flavor. The sharp acidic and sour character is a result of the combined yeast and lactic bacteria fermentation process. These beers are often served with a shot of fruit sugar syrups (raspberry or woodruff) mixed in to ease the sourness. Berliner Weisse beers are somewhat “rare” and hard to come by in most parts of the world, being

brewed by only two German brewers today. There are also a handful of Berliner-style Weisse beers showing up and many of them are excellent. Wheat Beers - German Wheats Dunkel Weizen - The dark (“dunkel”) counterpart to the pale German Hefeweizen beers, this ale combines 50% or more wheat malt with darker Vienna and/or Munich malts to produce a beer that is murky to cloudy (typically unfiltered) and reddishbrown in appearance with a very generous and fluffy off-white head. As with Hefeweizens, the aroma and flavor of the dunkelweizen feature balanced ester (normally banana) and phenolic (normally clove) notes over a grainy wheat base and virtually no hop presence. The darker malts of the dunkelweizen add a touch of toasted

and caramel flavors to the experience, which leads to a more robust flavor profile than a standard hefeweizen. Wheat Beers - German Wheats – Hefeweizen - The feature summer ale of Southern Germany (Bavaria), the hefeweizen (or “weissbier”) is brewed with wheat malt (at least 50%) and light Pilsner malt. The resulting product features a balanced ester (normally banana) and phenolic (normally clove) flavor that is achieved from the yeast used to brew these beers. The appearance of this unfiltered beer (“mit hefe” means “with yeast”) is pale golden to amber in color with light to heavy cloudiness and a very generous, fluffy, and long lasting white head. Citrus and basic wheat grain elements (even bubblegum) often accompany the feature flavors,

while hops contribute a very minor role. The Hefeweizen is the lightest of the Hefeweizen, Dunkelweizen, and Weizenbock series of German Wheat beers. Wheat Beers - German Wheats Krystal Weizen - This is the filtered version of the Hefeweizen and is therefore crystal clear (“krystal klar”) in appearance, displaying the clear and sparkling nature of the beer. The mouthfeel is lighter and cleaner than the hefeweizen and some of the yeast flavor components are reduced (banana and clove), revealing more of the citrus and wheat aspects of the beer. Wheat Beers - German Wheats – Weizenbock - The Weizenbock Story continued on page 40

Please note this is a 21 and over event,

World’s Craft Beer Buyer, JP Watts said, “Our WOBtoberfest coincides with Oktoberfest at Tempe Town Lakes so folks can hit us up on their way or come and chill out after their done. Either way, we’re planning a free festive event with bands, tavern fare and craft beer for all.” For more information, please visit World of Beer Tempe on Facebook at www. facebook.com/WOBTempe.

combines the character of a basic bock or doppelbock beer with that of a Dunkel Weizen. It is a dark amber to dark brown colored ale, which is hazy to cloudy in appearance and is normally accompanied by a thick and long-lasting head. The aroma and flavor feature dark fruits (plums, prunes, raisins, and/or grapes), strong phenols (clove and sometimes vanilla), and rich alcohol (although the alcohol shouldn’t be sharp or hot) alongside the grainy wheat and ester (banana) character of the dunkelweizen base. As with the other German wheat beers, weizenbocks do not use hops to impart significant character to the beer’s aroma of flavor. The alcohol level is significantly higher in this style, jumping from the ~5% level of a hefe or dunkelweizen to ~7-9%. Witbier - A style revived by Peter Celis, who brewed at a variety of Belgian locations and has also operated a selfnamed brewery out of Texas, Belgian White Ales (Witbiers) are Belgium’s twist on Wheat Beer, normally brewed with about 50% wheat malt. These beers are typically cloudy (unfiltered), feature a yellow-white to golden color with significant carbonation, and pour with a dense, fluffy, and well-

sustaining head. Their flavors are crisp, moderately sweet, and sometimes tart with spices (coriander and curacao probably most common) and citrus fruits (orange peels, lemon zestiness) most commonly featured over the subdued wheat base. Hops play almost no role in this style’s aroma or flavor. The cloudiness provides an almost white color which is where the name is derived from.

Cider - Ciders are produced from fermenting apple juice. They are not beers, as they lack a grain malt (like barley, wheat, or rye), but many beer enthusiasts happen to enjoy them anyway. While ciders are derived from fruit, they should not be overwhelmingly fruity ( just as a wine is not overly fruity, despite being derived from grapes). The flavors of

these fermented beverages range from dry to sweet and often take on acidic qualities. Various adjuncts can be added to achieve higher alcohol levels and additional fruits are sometimes used to supplement the flavor profile. Perries are a similar class of fermented fruit beverages, but they are made from pears instead of apples. Mead - Meads are fermented products made primarily from honey, water, and yeast. Although they are not technically “beers” (they lack malt and only Braggot meads tend to have a hopping option) they are one of the earliest forms of fermentation known to man and a significant historical predecessor to the art and science of brewing beer. The flavors range from sweet to dry and the strengths from extremely strong (~20% ABV) to low (~3.5% ABV). Secondary ingredients and chemicals such as citrus fruits, tea, oak, and tannin may be used to adjust the final product qualities. Aging is also a key factor in obtaining the desired end product. There are several types of meads. In addition to the traditional “Honey Wine”, there are Braggots which include malted barley as part of the fermentables, pyments which include grapes to provide a wine-like characteristic and melomels which use other fruits to soften the flavor and provide a different counterpoint to the honey. While many meads are still products, melomels are frequently lightly carbonated which provide a different mouthfeel, making them ideal for serving on draft. Another week of beer styles in the books. As you can see, there are many options for wheat beers, but all are particularly enjoyable in the Phoenix heat. In other parts of the country, wheat beers are summer only products, but here we enjoy them year round and they are one of the most popular styles available. Next in our style profiles we will start on lager beers. Until then, cheers.

At Lawrence Dunham Vineyards, over 15 tons of Viognier have been harvested, and according to Curt Dunham, owner and winemaker, there is another 10-12 tons still in the vineyard for which he is trying to find buyers. “I would have never guessed that we would be harvesting this much Viognier in mid-September when we harvested Viognier in 2012 in midAugust,” said Dunham. “After last week’s hail storm, I am thrilled to have grapes to harvest.” He reported some damage to the vine canopies but not to the grapes. All the vineyards across Arizona have commented on the amount of rain and cloudy days that have occurred late in the season. The cloudy days have made it difficult for the grapes to ripen and caused significant bunch rot. Many of the vineyards have had to cut back the vine canopies so that the sun can penetrate the grape-filled vines to encourage increased brix (or sugar levels). Flying Leap Vineyards is experiencing their first harvest from their vineyards in

acres is growing, wine production is increasing and the wine quality is being recognized. The gallons of wine being produced in Arizona more than doubled from 2011 to 2012.

Kief Manning, winemaker at KiefJoshua Vineyards in Sonoita, said that harvest was going well. “Our vineyard had good fruit set and the quality looks great” Manning said. “I think it is better than last year, which was good, and it followed two bad years with hail in 2010 and a series of spring frosts in 2011.”

Peggy Fiandaca, President of the Arizona Wine Growers Association said, “The opportunities of the Arizona wine industry are great, and there is no reason that the wine industry cannot be the next billion dollar wine region like Washington and Oregon. The Arizona wine industry is excited about the 2013 growing season as well as the recognition the industry is receiving, which boosts Arizona’s image as a

Page Springs Cellars, located in the Verde Valley, reports processing 80 of an expected 125-ton harvest. Like Southeastern Arizona, it has been a wet season in Northern Arizona causing an increase in predation and rot issues over 2012. However, the monsoon weather has been very localized, and Page Springs Cellars reports that they have some amazing fruit, namely Dos Padres Syrah (third leaf), Stage Stop Shiraz and House Mountain Petite Sirah. “We’re really excited about the potential of some of these young Northern Arizona vineyards,” said Page Springs Cellars’ Winemaker Matt Rollain. “Despite the frost issues experienced earlier this year at our Colibri Vineyards in the Chiricahua Mountains, the Syrah (low yield) and Mourvedre (high yield) look amazing,” Rollain said. Though harvest is not yet over, winemakers have their fingers crossed that it is going to be a good year both in quantity and quality of the wine grapes. Some of the vineyards will wrap up harvest in early October where efforts shift to the winery. Arizona wines have received much recognition this past year, with wines made from Arizona-grown grapes receiving high marks from nationally-respected publications and wines winning prestigious awards in competitions with the best wines in the world. quality wine-making region,” Fiandaca said. The Arizona wine industry will celebrate the fruits of their labor at the annual Festival at the Farm, November 15 and 16 at the Farm at South Mountain. The Arizona Republic announces the winners of the annual wine competition at a reception on Friday, Nov. 15 at Quiessence Restaurant. The festival on Saturday is where participants can taste the awardwinning wines, sample wines and talk to winemakers from around the state, attend educational seminars, listen to music, enjoy a picnic lunch under the Pecan trees and hopefully walk away with the winning bid for an incredible live/silent, wine-auction package. Kent Callaghan, winemaker with Callaghan Vineyards and a pioneer in the Arizona wine industry, compared the 2013 harvest season to the 1992 and 2006 harvest years–wet and late but great quality potential. Harvest 2013 is more than half over for most Arizona wineries. Vineyards located at low elevations such as Charron Vineyards in Vail ( just southeast of Tucson) start bringing in their grapes in mid-August, and the higher elevation vineyards will be harvesting into October.

Cochise County and Elgin. Mark Beres, one of Flying Leaps owners, said they still have not harvested a single grape from their Elgin vineyard because the sugar levels have not risen to where they want them to be. “However, the story for this year’s harvest is certainly how early we picked at our vineyard in Cochise County,” Beres exclaimed. “Who would ever have imagined that we’d be harvesting Grenache at 23.6 brix levels on August 10th?”

After more than six decades together, The Blind Boys of Alabama haven’t lost a step. Their latest Gospel record features soulful Gospel covers (“God Put a Rainbow in the Clouds”), upbeat renditions of classic songs (“Take Your Burden to the Lord and Leave it There”) and powerful expressions of faith (“My God is Real”). But there are plenty of surprises. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver does a duet with the Boys’ Jimmy Carter on a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Every Grain of Sand,” that is the most beautifully subdued song you will hear all year. Singer-songwriter Patty Griffin and Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs appear on “Jubilee” and “I’ve Been Searching,” respectively, and show how with I’ll Find a Way the Boys have made a stirring record that mixes the modern with the old in profoundly unexpected ways.

Amos Lee’s latest record, Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song, is a subtly engaging piece of work. From the Americana track “Johnson Blvd,” which details the hard times that have ravaged a small American town, to the soulful and sexy “The Man Who Wants You,” this album is a diverse meditation on the American experience. The swelling acoustic finale “Burden” features Lee apologizing for being a burden to someone, while “Stranger”’s groovy roots rock sound is augmented by Lee’s lyrics about the transient nature of life. “Tricksters, Hucksters and Scamps” is a lively ragtime rock track and “High Water” is an oddly enjoyable rock song, so the album isn’t complete somber and serious. Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song, is a monumental achievement.

Crescent Ballroom to Host The Funky Autopsy’s Mix Tape Release Party Wednesday, October 30th at 9pm Come out and experience a night of live art and hip hop in celebration of Phoenix MC, Myrlin’s, first debut mix tape, The Funky Autopsy. Recent press has labeled The Funky Autopsy as a funkadelic breath of fresh air that deviates from the typical posturing that characterizes mainstream hip-hop. Nationally recognized poet and performer, Myrlin, sets the stage for a well rounded night of entertainment founded in the four primary elements of hip hop: b boying, graffiti art, Djing, and of course MCing. Live music performances accompanied by a variety of visual art and urban dance aim to provide an interactive experience between audience and artist. “It is an eclectic mix of hip hop soul with a latino twist presented by a line up Arizona artists that represent the thriving downtown Phoenix art scene. If you can cumbia

step and nod your head to a break beat while simultaneously enjoying live art and performance this is the show for you! Myrlin Hepworth has written and performed his poetry across the United States. In 2009, the Arizona Commission on the Arts selected him for its roster of Teaching Artists. In addition to visiting nearly thirty high schools each year, Hepworth makes a living with his art by performing at universities, youth centers, group homes, museums and theaters. He competed on three National Poetry Slam teams and co-founded and coached the Phoenix youth team to consecutive appearances at the Brave New Voices International Poetry Slam.” The Funky Autopsy: The mix tape release party!
