Arizona Broadway Theatre Launches Fifth Season With New Production of Anything Goes Arizona Broadway Theatre’s Fifth Season sets sail on October 2, 2009, with an allnew production of Anything Goes. The Cole Porter classic will run through November 15, 2009. “It’s exciting to be able to re-stage Anything Goes as it was meant to be seen when ABT first opened in November of 2005,” commented Joseph Martinez, the show’s director. Anything Goes was the first production that ABT mounted four years ago, but due to delays in construction of ABT’s state-of-the-art facility on Paradise Lane, the show was presented in a pavilion tent just west of the theatre on the grounds of the Peoria Sports Complex. “We knew once we opened the show on that make-shift stage at the sports complex that we would someday revive the show and present it the way we had always envisioned it,” Martinez continued. About the Cast Cassandra Klaphake, ABT’s Casting Director and Artistic Producer, has gathered a cast of new and familiar faces for ABT’s remounting of Anything Goes. AriZoni Award winner Gina Handy will portray Reno Sweeney, the sexy evangelist-turnednight-club-singer. Currently a resident of Pennsylvania, Handy appeared as Sister Hubert in ABT’s production of Nunsense last summer and is a familiar face in the Phoenix theatre scene. Making his ABT debut in the role of Billy Crocker is Sam Underwood, a New York-based British actor who has performed throughout the UK and on America’s East Coast. Also returning to the ABT stage is Dennis Setteducati (The Music Man, Man of La Mancha) as gangster Moonface Martin; Shayla Benoit (Cabaret, Miss Saigon, The Taffetas) as sexy gangster Erma; Jason Paul (Cabaret, Miss Saigon, Forever Plaid) as wealthy Englishman Lord Evelyn Oakleigh; and Stacey Gordon (Bye Bye Birdie) as Mrs. Evangeline Harcourt. About Anything Goes Anything Goes is a tale of high jinx and mistaken identities aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London. Billy Crocker is a stowaway in love with heiress Hope Harcourt, who is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Nightclub singer Reno Sweeney, Moonface Martin (Public Enemy #13) and a boatload of tap-dancing sailors, and high-kicking chorus girls aid Billy in his quest to win Hope. This all-new production of the 1930’s comedy classic features some of Cole Porter’s most unforgettable tunes, such as I Get a Kick Out of You, You’re the Top, and the title song Anything Goes.

About Arizona Broadway Theatre ABT, Arizona’s one-of-a-kind, award-winning, state-of-the-art professional dinner theatre, showcases locally and nationally acclaimed artists both onstage and behind the scenes. The Sound of Music presented by Fountain Hills Community Theater Thursday - Saturday 8pm Sunday 2pm The final collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein, The Sound of Music was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. When Maria, a postulant, proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time. The score includes ‘Do Re Mi,’ ‘Edelweiss,’ ‘My Favorite Things,’ and the title tune.

Face to Face: 150 Years of Photographic Portraiture presented by Phoenix Art Museum Wednesday 10am – 9pm Thursday – Saturday 10am – 5pm Sunday Noon – 5pm Thru January 10, 2010 Face to Face: 150 Years of Photographic Portraiture explores the photographic portrait - the stories portraits can tell, the ways photographers convey the essence of their subjects and the impact of the relationship between photographer and subject. Including nearly 60 portraits from the Center for Creative Photography, as well as key loans from a few local collections, the exhibition raises engaging questions: How does a portrait become iconic? What is unique about a photographic self-portrait? What are the advantages of working in the studio, or in the field? How do photographers use setting, pose, camera angle, or scale to add meaning to a picture?

Dennis Minchella, President Kokopelli Winery Trivia Question: Why was Thomas Volney Munson, a native of Illinois who moved to Texas in 1876, considered a hero to the French wine industry in the 1880s? Why is wine considered a celebratory alcohol? Unlike beer or spirits, wine has cultivated a reputation as an alcohol to be consumed when there is a special moment in your life. But don’t let this American tradition steer you away from making wine a regular part of your life.

The word “Champagne or Sparkling Wine” almost screams special occasion. In France, Champagne is consumed with meals on a regular basis. Champagne lends itself perfectly as a companion to compliment a salad, light seafood and many dessert courses. So, Cheers!

I find that wine is great for almost any occasion big or little. Some of my fondest memories are connected to meals simply shared in the house with friends and one or more enjoyable bottles of wine. A few weeks ago a newlywed couple came for dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal, their company and a 1998 Beringer Port produced from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. We even signed the bottle and placed it in the wine rack to memorialize a great time. I view wine as something to help create great memories. When you want to create a fun and memorable evening, consider a blind wine tasting at your home. Host a “blind - vertical wine tasting,” ask each guest to bring a particular varietal (i.e. Pinot Grigio) from a specific country (i.e. America or Italy). Present the wines concealed in a brown paper bag. Mark each bag with a number and taste the wines in order of the numbers. Are You Smarter Than A Nobel Prize Winner? Let’s face it, most of us think we’re pretty well read and pretty darn smart. But not too many of us have won a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, and that is why I want to introduce you to Dr. Otto Warburg.

Dr. Otto Warburg 1931 Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Warburg won the 1931 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work during the 1920s on the then relatively unknown and mysterious disease called cancer. He successfully identified the root cause of cancer, and discovered that cancer cells, unlike normal cells, thrive in an anaerobic, acidic state rather than an oxygen rich, high pH environment. In fact, he discovered that cancer cannot grow in a high alkaline, oxygen rich environment at all. Think about this for a minute. This means we have known what causes cancer for over 78 years, but if this is true, why don’t we learn this fact in every high school biology class in America? Why don’t the cancer treatment centers, oncologists or cancer related charities shout this knowl-

edge from the rooftops? Why isn’t there a warning from the Surgeon General on every bottle or can of soft drinks or sports drinks sold in America? They are extremely acidic, after all, and can cause great damage to humans by helping to create an extremely acidic environment inside the body. And why isn’t there anything being done to tell every American to alkalize their body before it is too late? The good news is that there IS something being done to spread this news, and even more importantly, I have recently discovered an incredible way to achieve an alkaline balanced body that is simple, fast, and easy!

Change Your Water and Change Your Life! Can it really be as easy to create an alkaline balanced body as drinking a different kind of water every day? Yes! But only if it is the right kind of water, made fresh in your own kitchen every day from your very own powerful water processing machine.

Micro-Clustered for Maximum Absorption and Hydration After passing through one of these amazing machines, your water will be micro-clustered, which means it is the most effective water in the world when it comes to hydrating each and every one of the approximately 70 Trillion cells in your body. The vast majority of Americans are chronically dehydrated, which leads to a myriad of health challenges and concerns.

Jonathan Sperry (played by veteran actor Gavin MacLeod) has a secret and a whole lot of wisdom to share. Set in 1970, The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry is a likable, albeit a little over the top religious comedy/drama that will certainly please the crowd it is marketed towards. It may also win over the hearts of moviegoers looking for an inspirational, non-offensive film to enjoy with the family.

Sperry is an older gentleman who lives alone in a charming small town. He befriends three young boys and shares with them his past experiences and religious beliefs. In any other movie (or time period), Sperry may come off as either a religious zealot or a dirty old man, but seeing as how this film is geared toward the Sunday School set, his actions are to be taken as purely innocent. There is a really cute movie in the script; three boys spend their summer mowing lawns, hanging out at the local café and trying to snag the girl of their dreams. They also learn about life and religion over lemonade and chocolate cake. Fireproof saw much success in theatres last year and Sperry could do the same at the box office, proving the need for religious themed films at your mainstream multiplex.

A recent announcement from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures should please the most die-hard of film fans. The Burbank-based studio is opening up the lot for a special event this fall. While you will not be free to roam the property, you will be able to immerse yourself in an experience unlike any other offered before by “the mouse.” Billed as the “Ultimate Disney Event,” filmgoers will be able to see The Princess and the Frog in limited release prior to

The Princess and the Frog is a musical animated comedy set in New Orleans. It is a modern twist on a classic tale. The story is set around a beautiful girl named Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose), a frog price who wishes to be human again and a fateful kiss that leads them on an adventure through the mystical bayous of Louisiana. Featuring hand-drawn animation by John Musker and Ron Clements, and music by composer Randy Newman, The Princess and the Frog is poised to be one of the biggest films of the season.

FILM! SECTION

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell By Randy Montgomery When the writer of a film stands in front of a packed house at the advance promotional screening of a movie and asks members of the audience to tell the crowd their wildest, most shocking romantically intimate moments, you know you are in for something different. Such is the case with I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, the new comedy from writer Tucker Max, whose book of the same name has been extremely popular with college students and young adults across the country. The book is a compilation of outrageous stories from Tucker chronicling drunken escapades and rendezvous’ with strippers and women of all walks of life. To make a big screen adaptation, several stories were used and strung together with a unifying plot. In the movie, Matt Czuchry plays the arrogant, rude, crude and overly self confident Tucker Max, who finds much fun in harassing young women, only to later win them over and have his way with them in bed. His latest conquest was a hearing impaired girl. His dream; a little person. Tucker rounds up his two buddies,

12

Drew (Jesse Bradford) and Dan (Geoff Stults) to accompany him on a road trip to what is supposedly one of the best strip clubs in America. Reluctantly, Drew (just getting over a break-up) and Dan (just days away from getting married) join him on what turns out to be a road trip from hell. As the opening scene reminds audiences, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell is “based on a true story… unfortunately.” Tucker’s college escapades while in law school forced him to drop out early on, although he returned to finish at a later time. Jobs were not easy to hold down. An internship at a law firm while in school which Tucker claims, “…was supposed to be cake, and you can’t get fired,” lasted only three weeks before he was let go. Working for his dad wasn’t easily done either. “I got fired from the family business by my own father,” joked Max at the screening in Tempe. I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell is quite hilarious at times, with numerous one-liners and visual gags to keep you entertained. You’ll find yourself sharing these jokes with friends after the movie. There is an air of arrogance and self-indulgence evident in the movie which plays off Tucker’s own personality. Whether that helps or hurts the film is up for debate.

“Whip It”, director and star Drew Barrymore blends action with heart! Review by Stan Robinson There are powerful forces coming together for the movie “Whip It”. Actress Drew Barrymore, (my favorites include “He’s Just Not That Into You” (2009), “50 First Dates” (2004), “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” (2003), “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” (2002), “Charlie’s Angels” (2000), and “Titan A.E.” (2000); actress Ellen Page who gained public recognition to include an Oscar® nomination for her performance in “Juno” (2008), and the exciting sports competition of Roller Derby that many of us “Boomers” were avid TV watchers in the 60’s and 70’s. Harnessing those forces is producer, debut feature film director, Drew Barrymore! Ellen Page stars as teenager Bliss Cavendar, an indie-rock loving misfit, from the small town of Bodeen, Texas. Her mother, well meaning in wanting her daughter to rise to the “high society” life she never had, and is also driven by the familiar “keep up with the Jones” syndrome, has always pushed her into beauty pageants and other events that sets the family on track to be part of that high society. Quite by accident Bliss and her best friend (Alia Shawkat) discover a roller derby league in nearby Austin, Texas.

October 1st - October 7th, 2009

Bliss is taken with the aura of the sport, the women involved, and the physicality of pushing oneself to be the best. Deciding to do something that “she” wants to do, her double life begins! In Bodeen, she’s the usual studious, shy, unassuming, confidence lacking Bliss. In Austin, moving her age to 22 from the actual 17, she works her way onto a roller derby team and become the fearless, “ Babe Ruthless” and to her surprise, she becomes a fan favorite! Of course, Bliss’ double life is on a collision course as both “lives” begin to demand more and more of her time, and Bliss and her best friend are determined to survive it all!

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

“Whip It” (a roller derby term for a specific power play move) mixes the coming of age aspect to growing up, friendships and family relationships, with an insight into the fast paced sport of Roller Derby, which has been on the rise again since 2000 after it faded in the 1970’s. “Whip It” is the directorial debut for Drew Barrymore (of the famous Barrymore family of actors going back to 1900), who has been acting since she was 5 years old, and producing the films she has also starred since “Never Been Kissed” (1999) through her production company Flower Films. Drew Barrymore delivers a visually exciting film for the action sequences of roller derby and captures the essence of friendship, family, and determining factors of the direction of one’s life through the eyes of a 17 year olds’ journey to fulfillment. “Whip It”, starring Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore, Marcia Gay Harden, Alia Shawkat, Juliette Lewis, Daniel Stern, and Kristen Wiig. Directed by Drew Barrymore; written by Shauna Cross; Rated PG-13 for sexual content including crude dialogue, language and drug material. Fox Searchlight Pictures release; Runtime: 110 Minutes.

CLAP, SING AND SCREAM ‘HOWLELUJAH’ Valley Residents to Howl at the Moon Beginning October 16 The world’s greatest Rock N’ Roll piano bar, Howl at the Moon, will open in Scottsdale on Friday, October 16. Valley residents will be doing more than howling in excitement as the world’s greatest rock n’ roll piano bar, Howl at the Moon, fills a niche in the Scottsdale nightlife scene. Valley VIPs will be getting invite-only entry at 5:30 p.m.

THE ALMIGHTY DJ Spinning Your Way to Success So, you’re determined to build your very own turntable empire. It’s not the easiest path, but if you’re driven, dedicated and addicted to music then get out of your cocoon and be known to the world!

and the party goes into full swing at 7 p.m. when Howl at the Moon is officially open to the public. Guests are encouraged to arrive early for guaranteed entry and be ready to clap, sing, dance and of course, howl. With thirteen current locations throughout the nation, Howl at the Moon has perfected the dueling piano show by bringing even more entertainment and excitement to the table. Playing the best music from the 70’s to today, guests can name it (whether it’s Billy Joel or Snoop Dog) and the performers will play it. Two piano players perform for one hour after which they yield the stage to two new players, who join them

On a positive note, technology has made tremendous advancements and DJing has come a very long way. Mastering the craft however requires extensive planning and alot of prework. You’ll need to master the art of switching tracks to fit the mood of the crowd, as well as changing the mood

Techno, trance, house, drum’n’bass, electro... it’s a language you’ll need to know inside and out. To be a successful DJ means you’re always on top of the music scene. To be a really good DJ means you are on top of all the other DJs around you. Easier said than done. So what makes a good DJ anyway? First and foremost, playing for the crowd is of utmost importance. If the crowd is jumpin’ and screamin’ to your cuts, you may indeed have what it takes to rock a good party. These days, everyone wants to hear the latest and hottest tracks. This responsibility lies upon the DJ alone. Exclusiveness has certainly brought about the success of some of the top DJs in the world today.

In the club scene, playing tracks the crowd wants to hear is simply not enough. You need to hype up the crowd with a unique ability to pull ‘stunts’ on the decks that no other DJ can. Whatever your tricks may be, a crowd will not respond unless it’s done to perfection. October 1st - October 7th, 2009 AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

for what is known as a “four-way” changeover. Occurring at the end of each hour and lasting for two to three songs, this hourly encore allows the piano players to incorporate additional instruments (drums, guitars and saxophone) into the performance. While the piano players and staff are the entertainment, guests are encouraged to become part of the show as well. “We are known for not just being a bar, but an experience,” says Michael Yates, National Marketing and Sales for Howl at the Moon. “Scottsdale was an obvious choice for its already booming nightlife scene, location and the need of the crowd through the tracks you choose to play. BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE Fat and happy from restaurant week we are, but that doesn’t stop us from continually beating the street looking for the best events and things to do around the Valley for you. This week we have a taste of South Beach, a new piano bar, a great fall menu and more. For all that happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley, keep on reading. We’re on Twitter too--@bdiggs and @ myFEmy. Scottsdale does South Beach: One part Cuban lounge, two parts a contemporary Italian and American bistro, and a dash of the obligatory sushi bar, makes South Beach Restaurant & Lounge a Scottsdale oasis for Miami-themed nightlife. Menu items range from the typical Miami fare of seafood specialties, ceviche cocktails ($8), cultural favorites, Jamaican jerked chicken salad ($13.95), to traditional menu characters of pastas, like penne ala vodka ($11.95) to burgers, soups, and salads. South Beach doesn’t skip a beat on Miami influenced style either, as the interior features rich textures of leather and smooth wood, accented in chocolate browns, and muted beach hues. The pseudo-Miami hot spot recently held a ladies night out, Sip, Shop, and Socialize. Occurring the last Thursday of every month, femme Night Owls can sip on $5 Martinis and Mojitos, nosh on complimentary passed hors d’eourves, and of course enjoy sorting through designer clothing, jewelry and accessories, and posh beauty products from specialty boutiques and designers. Ladies will also have a chance to win prizes and giveaways, while socializing with friends. South Beach features everything form traditional and reverse happy hours, pre-fixed dinner menus, NFL Sundays, and something for wine lovers. Enjoy more of South Beach at www.southbeachaz.com.

Howl at the Moon: A case of dueling piano bars? Looks like it. Tempe’s Big Bang will have competition soon from Scottsdale’s very own piano bar, Howl at the Moon. Similar to the Mill Avenue legend, knowledgeable musicians are able to play everything from 70’s classic rock to modern hip-hop hits, and everything else the audience can come up with. Opening Friday, October 16 at 7 p.m. Night Owls are encouraged to come out and try to trump the dueling musicians and celebrate the grand opening. Valley residents can get on Howl at the Moon’s guest list, sans cover charge, by submitting their RSVP to www. HowlAtTheMoon.com. Facebook users who friend Howl at the Moon prior to opening night will howl about free entry and a complimentary first drink. Get ready for the dueling piano bar experience by practicing clapping on beat, screaming out the correct lyrics, and familiarizing yourself with a “four way,” and visit www.HowlAtTheMoon.com. singer Brian Johnson recently underwent a medical procedure and at the advice of his doctor is taking some time to rest. Further information regarding these dates will be released, but hold on to your tix until that time. Michael Jackson Movie: This is It, a film that documents preparations and unseen rehearsals from the late King of Pop’s series of London concerts, will be limited to a two-week run at Harkins Theatres Valley wide. Tickets are on sale now and I suggest that you get them as it is sure to be VERY crowded. For tickets, showtimes and to view the trailer, visit harkinstheatres.com. New Fashion Square Restaurant: Marcella’s Italian Kitchen will be opening October 12th in the new wing at Scottsdale Fashion Square. The 10,000 square foot restaurant will feature a “robust, but uncomplicated Chef-driven menu.” Some menu items include Favorites include the fresh made Gnocchi con Bolognese with braised lamb; Ravioli Mezzaluna with goat cheese, Italian bacon and mushrooms; and Marcella’s Lasagna with sweet Italian sausage. Plus they have a bunch of pizzas including the Margherita D.O.C. with mozzarella, plum tomato, and sweet basil; and the Sicilian with capacola, salami, meatballs, asiago cheese and red onions. Their happy hour will be offered weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m. in the bar and outside on the patio and will feature half price pizzas and appetizers and specially priced handcrafted cocktails Sounds yummy. I’m scheduled to go and I’ll let you know how it is. For more information visit cameronmitchell.com. Capital Grille: I went to The Capital Grille— Scottsdale for restaurant week and had one of the best meals I ever had. Not only is the food great, but the service is excellent as well. It is a high-end place, but they are making it a bit more affordable with a special $39 fall menu that will be available until November 1. The three course menu features a choice of appetizers of Butternut Squash Bisque with Crisp Shiitake Mushrooms or Field Greens, Sliced Pear, Roquefort Cheese, Candied Walnuts and Champagne Vinaigrette. The main course choices are Parmesan Crusted Filet with Red Wine Demi-Glace, Prosciutto Wrapped Lions Paw Scallops with 12-year Aged Balsamic, or Seared Halibut with Marcona Almonds and Sherried Tomato Relish—all are served with Truffle Mac ‘N’ Cheese. For dessert choose from Warm Apple Crisp with Cinnamon Ice Cream or Pumpkin Cheesecake with Caramel Sauce. For $39, you just can’t go wrong so treat yourself with all of this is available. Are You Ready For The Next Downturn?

ONLINE TRADING Choosing a Broker and Opening an Account Before you can trade stocks online, you have to select an online broker. Your online broker will execute your trades and store your money and stock in an account. The online trading industry has seen lots of mergers and acquisitions, but there are still many firms to choose from. Different firms also offer different levels of help, account types and other services. Here are some things you should keep in mind as you look for a broker. How much money you plan to invest. Most firms require investors to have a certain amount of money to open an account. This is different from a minimum account balance -- although most brokerages have those, too. How frequently you plan to make trades. Are you going to buy one stock and hold on to it? If so, you’ll need to make sure the brokerage doesn’t charge a fee for account inactivity. On the other hand, if you’re going to make lots of trades, you’ll want a lower fee per trade. Regardless of how much you plan to use your account, you should evaluate how much using the site will cost you.

30

Your level of trading experience and how much guidance you need. Some of the least expensive brokerages don’t offer much in the way of research or broker-assisted trades. Others, while still moderately priced, offer market analysis, articles on successful trading and help from licensed brokers. Any other services you may want. A few trading sites let you buy and sell stocks but not much else. Others are more like major banks, offering debit cards, mortgage loans and opportunities for other investments like bonds and futures. Some sites, such as Keynote and Smartmoney, rate online brokerages based on success rates, customer service response time, trading tools and other factors. They can help you make a decision as you shop around for the best trading site for your needs, but keep in mind that there are no official standards for ranking or evaluating brokerages. As with any site that requires your personal and financial information, you should make sure your online broker has good security measures, including automatic logouts and transmission encryption. You should also make sure your brokerage is reputable. The Investing Online Resource Center has a good list of links you can use to make sure your firm is legitimate.

The Wildcats were aided with the return of Patrick Patterson. Diaper dandies like John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins. Fans of Big Blue will be jumping with joy. 3. Michigan State: Tom Izzo’s squad made it to the finals last season, creating excitement galore in Detroit. Kalin Lucas is arguably the premier player in the Big Ten. Look for big things from Delvon Roe, while Raymar Morgan needs to return to earlier form. 4. Texas: AJ Abrams is gone, but Rick Barnes still has reason for optimism.

He also believes the best is yet to come for hockey in Phoenix. “I want to thank every staff member of the Phoenix Coyotes, past and present. It was a real pleasure to work with each and every one of you. I’ve always said that Phoenix is a great sports city and deserves nothing but the best. I still believe that”, stated Gretzky. “I often said it was the greatest honor and privilege I could imagine to be able to play in the National Hockey League. I feel the same way about being an NHL coach. I’ve loved the four years Damion James pulled out of the NBA draft to return to Austin. Purdue: If Robbie Hummel can stay healthy, watch out. Matt Painter has a lot of returning talent to challenge the Spartans in the Big Ten. 7. Roy Williams has one of the best recruiting classes coming in, while players like Ed Davis will step up big time. 9. West Virginia: Devin Ebanks and Da’Sean Butler lead a tough Mountaineer squad. KISS – SONIC BOOM (WALMART) So, 11 years after the not-so-well received ‘Psycho Circus’ (Kiss’ last studio album) comes a new KISS album. At this point, what’s to be excited about? If you’re not a KISS fan, then absolutely nothing. If you were a KISS fan or still are, then pay close attention: this album is fantastic! No joke. Gene Simmons, who doesn’t know the meaning of the word subtle, proclaimed this to be KISS’ best album in 30 years, going as far to say that it’s more or less a throwback to the days of classics like Rock And Roll Over (1976) and Love Gun (1977).

KID ROCK SHOWS HIS COLORS WITH GENEROUS MILITARY DONATION

Reason”. Hmm…. Regardless, this is a very good album that captures the energy, power and vibe of what is the best of KISS. Produced by KISS’ Paul Stanley, this is a relentless batch of tunes with no ballads that demand to be cranked through any stereo. Some tunes are naturally better than others, but they all hold up well. Stanley and Simmons both sound quite strong vocally while Gene’s bass tone is simply brutal, drummer Eric Singer (who also has his lead vocal debut on “All For Glory”) is in top form and Thayer, although Frehleylike in his approach, holds his own and simply delivers the goods with his raw solos that compliment each and every tune. Fun, upbeat, solid songs with some tongue-in-cheek lyrics thrown in, this is KISS, plain and simple. Who’d want to hear KISS sing about nuclear, poverty, etc. Rock and roll is supposed to be fun. And that’s exactly what this album is. – Stephen Wilkinson

Don’t Stop Believing. Listen, if the soothing sounds of Journey don’t calm you down as you’re being boiled to death by volcanic magma, then your boat ride just took a turn for the worse. Get your towels ready, it’s about to go down. What is the official drink of the band? No official drink, although I was raised on Grand Mariner. Julie likes a heavy dose of Jameson, and Billy’s got a Jager machine waiting for him when he gets home. I can’t vouch for the rest of the staff, but we are pretty much well rounded drinkers. What’s the story behind the name? It’s based off the idea of how hard we bang the keyboards when we play them. Are you any good? We are all good at many facets of life, but if you’re asking if we know “Don’t Stop Believing”, the answer is yes! I’d say that we are America’s best, all request. What’s your best cover tune? Don’t Stop Believing.

The Big Bang Band Members Mikey C Ben Murphy Julie Martinez Matt Hay-Roe Billy Ward Mo Castelazo Collin Freestone Web Sites for the Bar Thebigbangbar.com Facebook: the big bang tempe Twitter@bangtempe myspace.com/thebigbangtempe Why did this bar get started? We started this bar so desperate yet amazing musicians could play the hits for the masses and have a place to call home.

38

What do you think is most important when doing a cover tune, exact reproduction, or creative interpretation of a familiar tune? There are so many ways for us to honor your request. We play the song the way it is supposed to sound; however if we don’t know it then we have to improvise, which plays into the creative interpretation aspect. That’s a big part of the show and personally my favorite part of the show. I love to play off the audience. Tell us a secret about the bar (just between us and 125,000 readers). The bar is haunted. Don’t worry, he’s a friendly ghost. Like Casper, except he doesn’t look like a phallic symbol. An underwater volcanic eruption spews boiling water into the cruise ship you’re playing on, and wouldn’t you know it, right in the middle of your set! Being upright, noble folk, what music would you play to calm everyone down as they boil to death?

How often do you perform live? The Big Bang is open 7 nights a week. We all rotate 4-5 nights a week each on the schedule. What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? The fact that we have the opportunity to do this for a living every night, meeting amazing people, playing great songs, is just hysterical to me. I feel blessed. But if you need specifics, then maybe the uncircumcised guy who dropped his drawers on stage and sent us all off trying to find our happy place. That was more disturbing than funny though. What do you do different that kicks ass over other piano bars? Although the general concept of a piano bar is to play the hits and engage the crowd to participate, I think we do a great job of honoring as many requests as possible. From an entertaining aspect, we are constantly updating the show, learning new songs, and creating bits that will keep the show fresh and avoid the repetition that you find in so many other piano bars of the same nature. What’s the biggest misconception people have about piano bars? That they are all the same. Look, I know that you will hear the same songs being played in every piano bar in America, but there’s a reason for that. The difference is the execution.

The Big Bang strives to present the public with the best musicians possible who can encompass all styles of music and entertainment, and execute the songs better than anyone else so that you will know the difference. The way I like to approach the gig is to see it as a great big living room, with 400 of my friends there, watching the show. It keeps it loose and guarantees a different show every night. I think that’s important. What will people see when you perform live? That depends on the people! The audience is the show, and we are merely cheerleaders leading them to places they didn’t think they would go when they first get there. Also, you will see me do the Napolean Dynamite dance. But not for free! Please take a few sentences to promote the bar in any way the questions did not cover. Lie, brag, make claims you can’t possibly support, give shameless plugs, tell us the preferred groupies we should order for you… You know, the usual. Rock on! Ok: 1)

Lie. You will find a better piano bar somewhere.

2) Brag. You will not find a better piano bar anywhere. 3) Claims I can’t support. Survival of the species is everybody’s business. 4) Shameless plugs. Our “Welcome to Hell” Halloween party coming up. Come as your favorite character that you think you would find in Hell. Great drink specials, costume contest. We are turning the bar into Hell, people. Look for details to follow. 5) Preferred groupies. Anyone who can do squat thrusts on a fire hydrant. Is that too much info?

The Arizona Institute for Breast Health provides a 2nd opinion for treatment options to women who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer – COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE. Each 2nd opinion is provided through a multi-disciplinary panel of breast cancer specialists and each patient is supported and lovingly guided by a patient advocate, a breast cancer survivor herself.
