Arizona Broadway Theatre Launches Fifth Season With New Production of Anything Goes Arizona Broadway Theatre’s Fifth Season sets sail on October 2, 2009, with an allnew production of Anything Goes. The Cole Porter classic will run through November 15, 2009. “It’s exciting to be able to re-stage Anything Goes as it was meant to be seen when ABT first opened in November of 2005,” commented Joseph Martinez, the show’s director. Anything Goes was the first production that ABT mounted four years ago, but due to delays in construction of ABT’s state-of-the-art facility on Paradise Lane, the show was presented in a pavilion tent just west of the theatre on the grounds of the Peoria Sports Complex. “We knew once we opened the show on that make-shift stage at the sports complex that we would someday revive the show and present it the way we had always envisioned it,” Martinez continued. About the Cast Cassandra Klaphake, ABT’s Casting Director and Artistic Producer, has gathered a cast of new and familiar faces for ABT’s remounting of Anything Goes. AriZoni Award winner Gina Handy will portray Reno Sweeney, the sexy evangelist-turnednight-club-singer. Currently a resident of Pennsylvania, Handy appeared as Sister Hubert in ABT’s production of Nunsense last summer and is a familiar face in the Phoenix theatre scene. Making his ABT debut in the role of Billy Crocker is Sam Underwood, a New York-based British actor who has performed throughout the UK and on America’s East Coast. Also returning to the ABT stage is Dennis Setteducati (The Music Man, Man of La Mancha) as gangster Moonface Martin; Shayla Benoit (Cabaret, Miss Saigon, The Taffetas) as sexy gangster Erma; Jason Paul (Cabaret, Miss Saigon, Forever Plaid) as wealthy Englishman Lord Evelyn Oakleigh; and Stacey Gordon (Bye Bye Birdie) as Mrs. Evangeline Harcourt. About Anything Goes Anything Goes is a tale of high jinx and mistaken identities aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London. The word “Champagne or Sparkling Wine” almost screams special occasion. In France, Champagne is consumed with meals on a regular basis. Champagne lends itself perfectly as a companion to compliment a salad, light seafood and many dessert courses. So, Cheers!
I find that wine is great for almost any occasion big or little. Some of my fondest memories are connected to meals simply shared in the house with friends and one or more enjoyable bottles of wine. A few weeks ago a newlywed couple came for dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal, their company and a 1998 Beringer Port produced from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. We even signed the bottle and placed it in the wine rack to memorialize a great time. I view wine as something to help create great memories. When you want to create a fun and memorable evening, consider a blind wine tasting at your home. Host a “blind - vertical wine tasting,” ask each guest to bring a particular varietal (i.e. Pinot Grigio) from a specific country (i.e. America or Italy). Present the wines concealed in a brown paper bag. Mark each bag with a number and taste the wines in order of the numbers. Sperry is an older gentleman who lives alone in a charming small town. He befriends three young boys and shares with them his past experiences and religious beliefs. In any other movie (or time period), Sperry may come off as either a religious zealot or a dirty old man, but seeing as how this film is geared toward the Sunday School set, his actions are to be taken as purely innocent. There is a really cute movie in the script; three boys spend their summer mowing lawns, hanging out at the local café and trying to snag the girl of their dreams. They also learn about life and religion over lemonade and chocolate cake. Fireproof saw much success in theatres last year and Sperry could do the same at the box office, proving the need for religious themed films at your mainstream multiplex.

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell By Randy Montgomery When the writer of a film stands in front of a packed house at the advance promotional screening of a movie and asks members of the audience to tell the crowd their wildest, most shocking romantically intimate moments, you know you are in for something different. Such is the case with I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, the new comedy from writer Tucker Max, whose book of the same name has been extremely popular with college students and young adults across the country. The book is a compilation of outrageous stories from Tucker chronicling drunken escapades and rendezvous’ with strippers and women of all walks of life. To make a big screen adaptation, several stories were used and strung together with a unifying plot. In the movie, Matt Czuchry plays the arrogant, rude, crude and overly self confident Tucker Max, who finds much fun in harassing young women, only to later win them over and have his way with them in bed. His latest conquest was a hearing impaired girl. His dream; a little person. Tucker rounds up his two buddies,

Drew (Jesse Bradford) and Dan (Geoff Stults) to accompany him on a road trip to what is supposedly one of the best strip clubs in America. Reluctantly, Drew (just getting over a break-up) and Dan (just days away from getting married) join him on what turns out to be a road trip from hell. As the opening scene reminds audiences, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell is “based on a true story… unfortunately.” Tucker’s college escapades while in law school forced him to drop out early on, although he returned to finish at a later time. Jobs were not easy to hold down. An internship at a law firm while in school which Tucker claims, “…was supposed to be cake, and you can’t get fired,” lasted only three weeks before he was let go. Working for his dad wasn’t easily done either. “I got fired from the family business by my own father,” joked Max at the screening in Tempe. I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell is quite hilarious at times, with numerous one-liners and visual gags to keep you entertained. You’ll find yourself sharing these jokes with friends after the movie. There is an air of arrogance and self-indulgence evident in the movie which plays off Tucker’s own personality. Whether that helps or hurts the film is up for debate.
“Whip It”, director and star Drew Barrymore blends action with heart! Review by Stan Robinson There are powerful forces coming together for the movie “Whip It”. Actress Drew Barrymore, (my favorites include “He’s Just Not That Into You” (2009), “50 First Dates” (2004), “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” (2003), “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” (2002), “Charlie’s Angels” (2000), and “Titan A.E.” (2000); actress Ellen Page who gained public recognition to include an Oscar® nomination for her performance in “Juno” (2008), and the exciting sports competition of Roller Derby that many of us “Boomers” were avid TV watchers in the 60’s and 70’s. Harnessing those forces is producer, debut feature film director, Drew Barrymore! Ellen Page stars as teenager Bliss Cavendar, an indie-rock loving misfit, from the small town of Bodeen, Texas. Her mother, well meaning in wanting her daughter to rise to the “high society” life she never had, and is also driven by the familiar “keep up with the Jones” syndrome, has always pushed her into beauty pageants and other events that sets the family on track to be part of that high society. Quite by accident Bliss and her best friend (Alia Shawkat) discover a roller derby league in nearby Austin, Texas.

The three course menu features a choice of appetizers of Butternut Squash Bisque with Crisp Shiitake Mushrooms or Field Greens, Sliced Pear, Roquefort Cheese, Candied Walnuts and Champagne Vinaigrette. The main course choices are Parmesan Crusted Filet with Red Wine Demi-Glace, Prosciutto Wrapped Lions Paw Scallops with 12-year Aged Balsamic, or Seared Halibut with Marcona Almonds and Sherried Tomato Relish—all are served with Truffle Mac ‘N’ Cheese. ONLINE TRADING Choosing a Broker and Opening an Account Before you can trade stocks online, you have to select an online broker. Your online broker will execute your trades and store your money and stock in an account. The online trading industry has seen lots of mergers and acquisitions, but there are still many firms to choose from. Different firms also offer different levels of help, account types and other services. Here are some things you should keep in mind as you look for a broker. How much money you plan to invest. Most firms require investors to have a certain amount of money to open an account. This is different from a minimum account balance -- although most brokerages have those, too. How frequently you plan to make trades. Are you going to buy one stock and hold on to it? If so, you’ll need to make sure the brokerage doesn’t charge a fee for account inactivity. On the other hand, if you’re going to make lots of trades, you’ll want a lower fee per trade. Regardless of how much you plan to use your account, you should evaluate how much using the site will cost you.

Your level of trading experience and how much guidance you need. Some of the least expensive brokerages don’t offer much in the way of research or broker-assisted trades. Others, while still moderately priced, offer market analysis, articles on successful trading and help from licensed brokers. Any other services you may want. A few trading sites let you buy and sell stocks but not much else. Others are more like major banks, offering debit cards, mortgage loans and opportunities for other investments like bonds and futures. Some sites, such as Keynote and Smartmoney, rate online brokerages based on success rates, customer service response time, trading tools and other factors. They can help you make a decision as you shop around for the best trading site for your needs, but keep in mind that there are no official standards for ranking or evaluating brokerages. As with any site that requires your personal and financial information, you should make sure your online broker has good security measures, including automatic logouts and transmission encryption. Reason”. Hmm…. Regardless, this is a very good album that captures the energy, power and vibe of what is the best of KISS. Produced by KISS’ Paul Stanley, this is a relentless batch of tunes with no ballads that demand to be cranked through any stereo. Some tunes are naturally better than others, but they all hold up well. Stanley and Simmons both sound quite strong vocally while Gene’s bass tone is simply brutal, drummer Eric Singer (who also has his lead vocal debut on “All For Glory”) is in top form and Thayer, although Frehleylike in his approach, holds his own and simply delivers the goods with his raw solos that compliment each and every tune. Fun, upbeat, solid songs with some tongue-in-cheek lyrics thrown in, this is KISS, plain and simple. Who’d want to hear KISS sing about nuclear, poverty, etc. Rock and roll is supposed to be fun. Julie likes a heavy dose of Jameson, and Billy’s got a Jager machine waiting for him when he gets home. I can’t vouch for the rest of the staff, but we are pretty much well rounded drinkers. What’s the story behind the name? It’s based off the idea of how hard we bang the keyboards when we play them. Are you any good? We are all good at many facets of life, but if you’re asking if we know “Don’t Stop Believing”, the answer is yes! I’d say that we are America’s best, all request. What’s your best cover tune? What do you think is most important when doing a cover tune, exact reproduction, or creative interpretation of a familiar tune? There are so many ways for us to honor your request. We play the song the way it is supposed to sound; however if we don’t know it then we have to improvise, which plays into the creative interpretation aspect. That’s a big part of the show and personally my favorite part of the show. I love to play off the audience. Tell us a secret about the bar (just between us and 125,000 readers). The bar is haunted. Don’t worry, he’s a friendly ghost. Like Casper, except he doesn’t look like a phallic symbol. An underwater volcanic eruption spews boiling water into the cruise ship you’re playing on, and wouldn’t you know it, right in the middle of your set! Being upright, noble folk, what music would you play to calm everyone down as they boil to death?

How often do you perform live? The Big Bang is open 7 nights a week. We all rotate 4-5 nights a week each on the schedule. What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? The fact that we have the opportunity to do this for a living every night, meeting amazing people, playing great songs, is just hysterical to me. I feel blessed. But if you need specifics, then maybe the uncircumcised guy who dropped his drawers on stage and sent us all off trying to find our happy place. That was more disturbing than funny though. What do you do different that kicks ass over other piano bars? Although the general concept of a piano bar is to play the hits and engage the crowd to participate, I think we do a great job of honoring as many requests as possible. From an entertaining aspect, we are constantly updating the show, learning new songs, and creating bits that will keep the show fresh and avoid the repetition that you find in so many other piano bars of the same nature. What’s the biggest misconception people have about piano bars? That they are all the same. Look, I know that you will hear the same songs being played in every piano bar in America, but there’s a reason for that. The difference is the execution.
The Big Bang strives to present the public with the best musicians possible who can encompass all styles of music and entertainment, and execute the songs better than anyone else so that you will know the difference. The way I like to approach the gig is to see it as a great big living room, with 400 of my friends there, watching the show. It keeps it loose and guarantees a different show every night. I think that’s important. What will people see when you perform live? That depends on the people! The audience is the show, and we are merely cheerleaders leading them to places they didn’t think they would go when they first get there. Also, you will see me do the Napolean Dynamite dance. But not for free! Please take a few sentences to promote the bar in any way the questions did not cover. Lie, brag, make claims you can’t possibly support, give shameless plugs, tell us the preferred groupies we should order for you… You know, the usual. Rock on! Ok: 1)
