DÌA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION AT MESA ARTS CENTER Saturday, October 31- Sunday, November 1

On Saturday, October 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, November 1, from noon to 5 p.m., the Mesa Arts Center campus will ignite in a celebration of the memory of departed loved ones. Dìa de Los Muertos is a community celebration complete with a community altar, live music and performances, food, a mercado featuring an assortment of Day of the Dead merchandise, jewelry, arts & crafts, children’s activities, and more. The event is free to the public. More than a dozen events make up the Dìa de los Muertos Celebration at Mesa Arts Center created in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Phoenix, Friends of Mexican Art, Arizona Museum for Youth, and Mesa Public schools. The event is sponsored by American Express and Friends of Mexican Art. In addition to the many events at

Mesa Arts Center, there will be a free trolley running between Mesa Contemporary Arts, Arizona Museum for Youth, and Arizona Museum of Natural History throughout the twoday event. Director R. J. Cutler captures fashion icon Anna Wintour!

Currently starring in three segments of “New York, I Love You”, which features vignettes by ten directors, Actress Maggie Q has the distinction of being highly recognizable throughout the world. Although born in the US, her acting career started in Hong Kong in 2000 after a highly successful modeling career throughout Asia. She has appeared on more than 200 magazine covers throughout the world including Time, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Madame Figaro, Marie Claire, Men’s Health, In Style, and Elle.

With the coming of fall, one thinks fashion. And films on fashion icons are in the forefront. Prominent projects include the Emmy nominated TV movie “Coco Chanel” starring award winner Shirley MacLaine, and the upcoming release of “Coco Before Chanel” starring Audrey Tautou from “The Da Vinci Code” (2006), signals fall fashion is in the air. There’s one name that is synonymous with fashion, not as a designer, but as a forecaster and as some say, the OK from Anna Wintour (Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Magazine), can make or break a designer’s career.

US audiences became a favorite with her movies “Mission: Impossible III” (2006), “Live Free or Die Hard” (2007), and “Balls of Fury” (2007). Along with that fan favorite status in the US, she is known as an action actress with martial arts skills! Her role in “New York, I Love You” is not an action role, which showcases another layer of talent Maggie Q brings to her characters. I asked Maggie about those martial arts moves she does so well.

The documentary “The September Issue” is a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into that all-powerful issue of Vogue Magazine. 17-year veteran of documentary filmmaking, J.R. Cutler, gives us some insight into documenting the most powerful fashion person in the world. Stan: Anna Wintour has one of the busiest schedules outside of presidents of countries, how long did your crew shoot? R.J.: We shot for 8 months, all over the world! In documentary filmmaking, a lot is being ready to shoot everything because one doesn’t know how significant an isolated event may be in the overall project. We had to be ready on an instants’ notice. If Anna Wintour’s plans changed, and they often did, so did ours.

Stan: You’re talking 8 months, which sounds like a lot of footage! R.J.: Our four-man crew shot over 300 hours of footage over the 8-month period. That’s part of the process of documentary filmmaking; during post-production is when the heart and essence of a project comes to life. While shooting, one gets everything you can on film. From screening the footage, the story becomes apparent. For “The September Issue” we were granted unprecedented access to Anna Wintour, long time staff members, designers, photographers, models, and were able to not only capture a US view, but that of a perspective from around the world for the fashion influence of Vogue Magazine, the annual September issue, and the guiding force behind it! The grip is your only connection with the golf club. Placing your hands properly on the golf club helps you better control the position of the clubface at impact. During the swing your body turns to create power. Since the body is rotating, the golf club must rotate at the same rate. In other words, the body and the club must turn together as a team. A fundamentally sound grip helps you create power and feel at the same time. Wrist action is a power source and gripping the club too much in the palm of your hand reduces wrist action. The fingers are the most sensitive parts of our hands. Placing the club more in the fingers rather than in the palm increases the amount of wrist hinge, which results in longer tee shots and more feel. One of the most common errors among golfers is a weak leadhand (left hand for the righthanded golfer) grip that is too much in the palm. This produces a shot that slices and lacks power. To grip the club properly for power and accuracy, use the simple procedure outlined and illustrated.

On Friday, October 16, Valley residents will be doing more than howling in excitement as the world’s greatest rock n’ roll piano bar, Howl at the Moon, fills a niche in the Scottsdale nightlife scene. BRIGGS READY TO RUMBLE AT CELEBRITY THEATER Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs Marks Return to Boxing Ring Oct. 17, to Face Robert “Big Philly” Hawkins at Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, AZ

Former two-time heavyweight boxing champ Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs (48-5-1, 42 KOs) will mark his return to the ring on October 17 at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, AZ, squaring off against Robert “Big Philly” Hawkins (23-13-0, 7 KOs) as part of the Neworld Promotions and Roland Sarria card dubbed “Phoenix Rising.” For Briggs the Saturday night fight ends a two-year layoff from the ring and is being called his first step toward reclaiming the heavyweight title. Briggs captured the WBO belt with a 12th round knockout of Sergei Liakhovich on November 4, 2006 but in his first title defense in which he was forced to fight with “walking pneumonia” he lost a 12-round decision to Sultan Ibragimov. Now “recharged and refocused,” Briggs has made it known that his goal is to become the true heavyweight champion, referring to the current heavyweight champions as “belt-holders” in an interview with WooEB.com’s Peter Tosto.

While Briggs is prepared for Hawkins he has current WBC belt holder Vitali Klitschko in his sights. After witnessing a less than impressive Klitschko’s 10th round TKO of Chris Arreola last month Briggs stated the “belt holder” couldn’t handle the power and speed he possesses. Briggs doesn’t want to stop with Vitali, he wouldn’t mind a shot at his brother Wladimir Klitschko, the current IBF, IBO and WBO champ. Briggs is supremely confident in his ability to handle the Ukrainian brothers having stated “I’m the last American-born heavyweight champion and I’m going to be the next. You have to be able to hurt these guys. A bit of Nouvelle Vague history and more on “3”: On their debut, Nouvelle Vague took cherished tracks from the late 1970s and early 1980s by acts such as Joy Division, The Clash, The Cure, Depeche Mode and the Dead Kennedys and reworked them in a gentle bossa nova style. Sung by French female vocalists, some of whom had never heard the originals before, these cult hits had new life breathed into them, and their meanings became softly subverted. In French, Nouvelle Vague means “new wave”, and “bossa nova” in Portuguese. Even the records’ sleeves wittily referenced the artwork for Jean Luc Godard’s early-’60s new-wave films. The group expanded its musical palette on Bande A Part, adding touches of reggae, ska and blues to balmy readings of familiar numbers by Bauhaus, Blondie, Buzzcocks, New Order and Yazoo, among others. By this point, even hardcore fans who’d considered these easy-listening versions of punk staples to be sacrilege learned to enjoy Nouvelle Vague as a guilty pleasure. But what of the authors who wrote the original songs – what did these once-ruthless idealists think of Nouvelle Vague’s more fragrant approach? Well, of those canvassed, all approved – thumbs up from Mick Jones of the Clash, Morrissey, the Undertones, Dead Kennedys and Killing Joke. And AZWeeklyMagazine.com

A bluesy swagger through Gary Numan’s “Metal” is sung with innocence and charm by Eloisia, a young Brazilian girl who could barely speak English and knew nothing of this music. Even “God Save The Queen”, once full of menace and bile, is fashioned into a romantic flutter. Add enchanting

LYNCH MOB – SMOKE AND MIRRORS (FRONTIERS) When the core of a good band (i.e. one of, if not THE principle songwriter(s) leaves) is fractured, there’s only so long one or the other members can drag the name around. Ex-Dokken guitarist George Lynch has been guilty of this for quite a while. Sure, everyone’s got to make a living. George has had other singers in the lead vocal slot after original vocalist Oni Logan departed nearly two decades ago after the debut of 1990’s ‘Wicked Sensation.’ But a name typically invokes what people expect, especially when it carved its own niche.

In many ways this album sounds as though it picks up where ‘Wicked’ left off, yet it’s also fresh and drips with mojo, soul and some of Lynch’s tastiest leads in many years. Album opener “21st Century Man” is a throwback of sorts to “River Of Love” from the band’s “heyday” if you will, yet it just lays it down and E R Ethe C O tone for the record. The O Nsets RD Z CK title track opens with an acoustic swampy vibe before the chorus kicks in with velvety, soulful vocals and a solid foundation. This tune alone showcases what has been missing for so long: mojo and soul. Oni simply has it. CD M

You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t check this one out. No offense to any past members or vocalists, but THIS is Lynch Mob. Bottom line, if you are a fan of the Wicked Sensation album and what Oni and George created nearly 20 years ago, you’d have to be deaf to not appreciate what they’ve cooked up for 2009. This album simply smokes! – Stephen Wilkinson

Here in 2009 Oni has reunited with George on record. There’s a new rhythm section in ex-Whitesnake bassist Marco Mendoza and drummer Scott Coogan. The big question on everyone’s mind is whether this incarnation is worthwhile - and do Oni and George do justice to the Lynch Mob name? The answer is quite simply Y-E-S.

Vocally, he is still on top of his game. “My Kind Of Healer” is a moody rocker that has a great groove. The tune has a lengthy trail out that showcases some almost Jeff Beck-like noodling from Lynch and a groovy bass line from Mendoza that is almost hypnotizing. “Where Do You Sleep At Night” is a groove-ladden rocker that is full of feel. There are so many good songs on this album, it’s hard to find anything “weak” although naturally some songs are better than others. The album certainly has a nice, consistent flow to it. Nice production and mix overall, this is a top notch effort.

Smart Money Choices For A Happy Stress-Free Life It’s a common misconception that making more money will bring more happiness and less stress, but research doesn’t show this to be the case. While more money brings a momentary thrill and a few new things, people generally adjust their lifestyles in ways that doesn’t increase their overall happiness level or decrease current stress. A better goal would be to be smarter with the money you have: buy fewer things that you don’t need, get out of debt (if you’re in it), and spend your money on things that will truly make you happy and decrease your stress level, including your future. This creates more of a feeling of abundance and personal freedom than having more money but spending it all on more expensive toys. The following are concrete ways you may be able to repurpose your finances in ways that will increase happiness and decrease stress.

Be Smart With Spending From now on, before you buy new things, really think about whether they will really improve your quality of life, of if they’ll just cause you stress (from having less money) and eventually add clutter to your home. Spending less can reduce stress.

Trade Old Stuff for New Experiences You may consider having a garage sale or selling items on eBay if you have too much ‘stuff’, and spending the money on taking classes, going on a vacation with your family, or doing something else that would create positive memories, enrich your life, and help you combat burnout.
