‘THE KITE RUNNER’ TOUCHING HEARTS AND SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS Arizona Theatre Company Tucson/Phoenix “Come see me, Amir, there is a way to be good again…” A cry for help from an old friend in a distant land lies at the heart of this powerful story of friendship, betrayal and redemption newly adapted from the international best-selling novel. Based on one of the most beloved books of the last decade, The Kite Runner is told through the lives of two boys, Amir and Hassan, growing up in Afghanistan in the same household, but in two starkly different worlds. When the innocence of the boys’ childhood is confronted with the brutality of prejudice and hate, Amir begins a journey of self discovery and enlightenment that will take him far from his home and the demons of his youth. But fate, global politics and historical tragedy threaten his ability to make amends for his past. A bracing look at the modern world, The Kite Runner shows us the human face

beneath the headline news. As the professional resident theatre of Arizona, ATC has been performing full seasons in both Phoenix and Tucson to a combined audience of more than 150,000 since 1983. ATC has been cited as a national model for professional performing arts institutions in consideration of how it has managed and produced full performance seasons in two cities and how it has built audience support and established fiscal stability in both communities.

Director R. J. Cutler captures fashion icon Anna Wintour!

Interview by Stan Robinson

Interview by Stan Robinson

Currently starring in three segments of “New York, I Love You”, which features vignettes by ten directors, Actress Maggie Q has the distinction of being highly recognizable throughout the world. Although born in the US, her acting career started in Hong Kong in 2000 after a highly successful modeling career throughout Asia. She has appeared on more than 200 magazine covers throughout the world including Time, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Madame Figaro, Marie Claire, Men’s Health, In Style, and Elle.

With the coming of fall, one thinks fashion. And films on fashion icons are in the forefront. Prominent projects include the Emmy nominated TV movie “Coco Chanel” starring award winner Shirley MacLaine, and the upcoming release of “Coco Before Chanel” starring Audrey Tautou from “The Da Vinci Code” (2006), signals fall fashion is in the air. There’s one name that is synonymous with fashion, not as a designer, but as a forecaster and as some say, the OK from Anna Wintour (Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Magazine), can make or break a designer’s career.

US audiences became a favorite with her movies “Mission: Impossible III” (2006), “Live Free or Die Hard” (2007), and “Balls of Fury” (2007). Along with that fan favorite status in the US, she is known as an action actress with martial arts skills! Her role in “New York, I Love You” is not an action role, which showcases another layer of talent Maggie Q brings to her characters. I asked Maggie about those martial arts moves she does so well.

kinds of skills, I dedicate myself to learning the various moves the stunt coordinators want. I do get into a rigorous workout routine, sometimes for hours a day to stay in shape! Stan: Amazing, you make it look so easy! Your career includes a lot of Asian films where you are a huge star, how do you handle the languages of those films?

Stan: So tell me Maggie, are you a martial artist?

Maggie: It’s assumed that I speak Chinese, well, I don’t (with a chuckle)! I was born and raised in the US, so when I get a role in an Asian film, I have to learn my lines in that language!

Maggie: (answering with a laugh!) No, I haven’t had any lessons! For each role that requires those

“New York, I Love You” Separate stories, one central theme, experiencing love!

with so many stories and actors, which presents an insightful view on the most cherished of human emotions.

Review by Stan Robinson There’s movies that I call “Slice of life” films where we simply drop in for a while, follow along, and then we’re out again. In “New York, I Love You”, we’re treated to ten ‘slices of life’ stories by as many directors! The central theme that ties all of the stories together, love, in New York City. We experience the highs and lows on the meaning of love in the big city! This movie is quite an undertaking in film production annals

The list of actors, as varied as the stories, include Shia LaBeouf, Bradley Cooper, Natalie Portman, Blake Lively, Orlando Bloom, Robin Wright Penn, Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Drea de Matteo, Christina Ricci, Olivia Thirlby, John Hurt, Ethan Hawke, James Caan, Anton Yelchin, Justin Bartha, Chris Cooper, Maggie Q, Eva Amurri, Andy Garcia, Julie Christie, Qi Shu, Eli Wallach, Cloris Leachman, Jacinda Barrett, and Burt Young. Be sure to read my review at www. ScreenScene.org

The documentary “The September Issue” is a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into that all-powerful issue of Vogue Magazine. 17-year veteran of documentary filmmaking, J.R. Cutler, gives us some insight into documenting the most powerful fashion person in the world. Stan: Anna Wintour has one of the busiest schedules outside of presidents of countries, how long did your crew shoot? R.J.: We shot for 8 months, all over the world! In documentary filmmaking, a lot is being ready to shoot everything because one doesn’t know how significant an isolated event may be in the overall project. We had to be ready on an instants’ notice. If Anna Wintour’s plans changed, and they often did, so did ours.

FILM! SECTION

Maggie Q, so much more than an action actress!

Stan: You’re talking 8 months, which sounds like a lot of footage! R.J.: Our four-man crew shot over 300 hours of footage over the 8-month period. That’s part of the process of documentary filmmaking; during post-production is when the heart and essence of a project comes to life. While shooting, one gets everything you can on film. From screening the footage, the story becomes apparent. For “The September Issue” we were granted unprecedented access to Anna Wintour, long time staff members, designers, photographers, models, and were able to not only capture a US view, but that of a perspective from around the world for the fashion influence of Vogue Magazine, the annual September issue, and the guiding force behind it! There’s more of the fascinating insight of documentary filmmaker R.J. Cutler and the making of “The September Issue” at www.ScreenScene.org

“Law Abiding Citizen”, intensity at its highest! Review by Stan Robinson

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

When “Law Abiding Citizen” ends, one has to catch a breath. Its nonstop intensity as the story follows a Philadelphia prosecutor (Jamie Foxx) who discovers he’s in a race against time, when a once upstanding family man (Gerard Butler) decides to take justice into his own hands against the flawed justice system that allowed his wife and daughter’s killer, to get away with murder! The grip is your only connection with the golf club. Placing your hands properly on the golf club helps you better control the position of the clubface at impact. During the swing your body turns to create power. Since the body is rotating, the golf club must rotate at the same rate. In other words, the body and the club must turn together as a team. A fundamentally sound grip helps you create power and feel at the same time. Wrist action is a power source and gripping the club too much in the palm of your hand reduces wrist action. The fingers are the most sensitive parts of our hands. Placing the club more in the fingers rather than in the palm increases the amount of wrist hinge, which results in longer tee shots and more feel. One of the most common errors among golfers is a weak leadhand (left hand for the righthanded golfer) grip that is too much in the palm. This produces a shot that slices and lacks power. To grip the club properly for power and accuracy, use the simple procedure outlined and illustrated.

FOLLOW THE DOTS

The dots on the glove show the position the club should take in the grip. The club should be held more in the fingers than in the palm.

You should also see a “V” that is created by the thumb and forefinger of the lead hand, and that “V” should be pointing back toward your right (for right-handed players) shoulder (the 1 o’clock position).

CONNECT THE DOTS

Hold the club about three feet in the air, in front of your body. With the clubface square, place the club at an angle through the fingers, following the line of the dots pictured in Step 2. The club should touch the base of the little finger and rest just above the first joint of the index finger (along the line of the dots).

THUMB POSITION

With the club at an angle and in the fingers, place your left thumb (for right-handed players) toward the back side of the shaft.

GOLF! SECTION

Get A Grip On Your Golf Game

CHECK KNUCKLES AND “V” POSITION In the address position, looking down at your grip, you should be able to see the knuckles of the index and middle finger of your lead (top) hand.

On Friday, October 16, Valley residents will be doing more than howling in excitement as the world’s greatest rock n’ roll piano bar, Howl at the Moon, fills a niche in the Scottsdale nightlife scene. Valley VIPs will be getting invite-only entry at 5:30 p.m. and the party goes into full swing at 7 p.m. when Howl at the Moon is officially open to the public. Guests are encouraged to arrive early for guaranteed entry and be ready to clap, sing, dance and of course, howl. With thirteen current locations throughout the nation, Howl at the Moon has perfected the dueling piano show by bringing even more entertainment and excitement to the table. Playing the best music from the 70’s to today, guests can name it (whether it’s Billy Joel or Snoop Dog) and the performers will play it. Two piano players perform for one hour after which they yield the stage to two new players, who join them for what is known as a “four-way” changeover. Occurring at the end of each hour and lasting for two to three songs, this hourly encore allows the piano players to incorporate additional instruments (drums, guitars and saxophone) into the performance. While the piano players and staff are the entertainment, guests are encouraged to become part of the show as well. “We are known for not just being a bar, but an experience,” says Michael

Yates, National Marketing and Sales for Howl at the Moon. “Scottsdale was an obvious choice for its already booming nightlife scene, location and the need for the type of experience Howl at the Moon will now be providing every night.” Valley residents can get on the guest list, sans cover charge, by submitting their RSVP at www. HowlAtTheMoon.com. For a special perk of free entry and your first drink for free, guests must become a fan of Howl at the Moon on Facebook prior to opening night. For more information visit www. BRIGGS READY TO RUMBLE AT CELEBRITY THEATER Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs Marks Return to Boxing Ring Oct. 17, to Face Robert “Big Philly” Hawkins at Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, AZ

Former two-time heavyweight boxing champ Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs (48-5-1, 42 KOs) will mark his return to the ring on October 17 at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, AZ, squaring off against Robert “Big Philly” Hawkins (23-13-0, 7 KOs) as part of the Neworld Promotions and Roland Sarria card dubbed “Phoenix Rising.” For Briggs the Saturday night fight ends a two-year layoff from the ring and is being called his first step toward reclaiming the heavyweight title. Briggs captured the WBO belt with a 12th round knockout of Sergei Liakhovich on November 4, 2006 but in his first title defense in which he was forced to fight with “walking pneumonia” he lost a 12-round decision to Sultan Ibragimov. Now “recharged and refocused,” Briggs has made it known that his goal is to become the true heavyweight champion, referring to the current heavyweight champions as “belt-holders” in an interview with WooEB.com’s Peter Tosto.

While Briggs is prepared for Hawkins he has current WBC belt holder Vitali Klitschko in his sights. After witnessing a less than impressive Klitschko’s 10th round TKO of Chris Arreola last month Briggs stated the “belt holder” couldn’t handle the power and speed he possesses. Briggs doesn’t want to stop with Vitali, he wouldn’t mind a shot at his brother Wladimir Klitschko, the current IBF, IBO and WBO champ. Briggs is supremely confident in his ability to handle the Ukrainian brothers having stated “I’m the last American-born heavyweight champion and I’m going to be the next. You have to be able to hurt these guys. I’m the only one big enough, strong enough and experienced enough.” That confidence has brought some excitement back to the heavyweight division and attracted some of Hollywood’s biggest names as Jack Nicholson, Brad Pitt, Richard Gere and 50 Cent are rumored to be planning on attending Saturday’s fight. Former heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson are also said to be sitting ringside for the bout. covers of Plastic Bertrand’s “Ca Plane Pour Moi”, Soft Cell’s “Say Hello Wave Goodbye” and “So Lonely” by the Police, and you have Nouvelle Vague’s strongest album to date. To keep it fresh, Marc and Olivier approached this album in the same spirit of discovery with which they made their 2004 debut. Back then, says Olivier, they recorded four songs for fun and played them to friends, who loved them, and also loved the idea of turning new-wave songs into something different. And so they made an album. As with all Nouvelle Vague’s work, the real stars of the records and shows are the songs themselves. When Nouvelle Vague play live, these well-known songs by other people become Nouvelle Vague’s songs. They own them, you might say. In the last few years the group has taken to the road as a six-piece touring outfit, playing shows and festivals all over the world. Press fawn over these French faves!

Beloved French Band Nouvelle Vague Return With Their New Hip-Shaking Gem “3” Nouvelle Vague, a truly unique and inventive band, gracefully takes a song you adore and shows you how to fall in love with it all over again with a sophisticated combination of bossa nova, jazz and sixties pop. Nouvelle Vague continues to re-master post punk and new wave nuggets time and time again.

42

“3” differs from its predecessors as songs are uniquely inspired byAmerican country music, roots and bluegrass. Nouvelle Vague teamed up with the legendary creators of these musical gems for a series of duets including “Master & Servant” (feat. Martin Gore), “Road to Nowhere”, “All My Colours (feat. Ian McCulloch), “Blister In The Sun”, “Our Lips Are Sealed” (feat. Terry Hal l), “God Save The Queen”, “Parade” (feat. Barry Admanson) Led by producer/arrangers Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux and sung by a revolving cast of chanteuses, the group’s first two albums, Nouvelle Vague (2004) and Bande A Part (2006) have sold well over half-a-million copies. Not wishing to tinker with this winning formula, but evolving all the same, “3” picks up where “Bande A Part” left off, and this time they’re joined by some famous names. October 15th - October 21st, 2009

A bit of Nouvelle Vague history and more on “3”: On their debut, Nouvelle Vague took cherished tracks from the late 1970s and early 1980s by acts such as Joy Division, The Clash, The Cure, Depeche Mode and the Dead Kennedys and reworked them in a gentle bossa nova style. Sung by French female vocalists, some of whom had never heard the originals before, these cult hits had new life breathed into them, and their meanings became softly subverted. In French, Nouvelle Vague means “new wave”, and “bossa nova” in Portuguese. Even the records’ sleeves wittily referenced the artwork for Jean Luc Godard’s early-’60s new-wave films. The group expanded its musical palette on Bande A Part, adding touches of reggae, ska and blues to balmy readings of familiar numbers by Bauhaus, Blondie, Buzzcocks, New Order and Yazoo, among others. By this point, even hardcore fans who’d considered these easy-listening versions of punk staples to be sacrilege learned to enjoy Nouvelle Vague as a guilty pleasure. But what of the authors who wrote the original songs – what did these once-ruthless idealists think of Nouvelle Vague’s more fragrant approach? Well, of those canvassed, all approved – thumbs up from Mick Jones of the Clash, Morrissey, the Undertones, Dead Kennedys and Killing Joke. And AZWeeklyMagazine.com

this led Oliver and Marc to the concept behind the third album: Nouvelle Vague performs duets with the original singers. The pair wrote a ‘dream’ list of the people they’d most like on the album and, when contacted, most said yes. On “3” you’ll encounter Depeche Mode’s singing “Master and Servant” with Nouvelle Vague’s leading lady Melanie Pain; Ian McCulloch of Echo And The Bunnymen duetting with Melanie on “All My Colours”; Marina Celeste performing “Our Lips Are Sealed” with Terry Hall of the Specials and Funboy Three (that’s a Go-Go’s track penned by Hall); and Magazine’s “Parade” sung by Barry Adamson and NV’s Nadeah Miranda. For additional tracks that didn’t make the final album, Chris Bailey from legendary Kiwi rockers The Saints performs a duet, likewiseSamy Birnbach of noted Belgian new-wavers Minimal Compact. Nouvelle Vague transform Talking Heads’ “Road To Nowhere” into a dusty bar-room shuffle, its head bowed as it traipses into the sunset after a long day working the land. “Heaven” by Psychedelic Furs becomes a tender acoustic affair. A bluesy swagger through Gary Numan’s “Metal” is sung with innocence and charm by Eloisia, a young Brazilian girl who could barely speak English and knew nothing of this music. Even “God Save The Queen”, once full of menace and bile, is fashioned into a romantic flutter. Add enchanting

Nouvelle Vague has that sweeping appeal that makes any live audience swoon.” Pitchfork Media “Groovy, finger-snapping sambas. As good as it gets.” Entertainment Weekly “...postcard-perfect confections for Brazilian beaches of Ipanema and the trendy bars of New York... Billboard “It’s really good, like ‘Why didn’t anyone think of this before?’ good. Tripwire “...frothy, effervescent pop...” Pitchfork “post-punk goes to the spa for treatments...” Paste “Fresh (and refreshing) takes on these classics.... the songs are so wildling different in their new dreamy form that they stand on their own.” Flaunt “...Intoxicating, acoustic lounge music.” Daily Candy “These hard-edged classics are now oceanside lounge tracks.” Ready Made

LYNCH MOB – SMOKE AND MIRRORS (FRONTIERS) When the core of a good band (i.e. one of, if not THE principle songwriter(s) leaves) is fractured, there’s only so long one or the other members can drag the name around. Ex-Dokken guitarist George Lynch has been guilty of this for quite a while. Sure, everyone’s got to make a living. George has had other singers in the lead vocal slot after original vocalist Oni Logan departed nearly two decades ago after the debut of 1990’s ‘Wicked Sensation.’ But a name typically invokes what people expect, especially when it carved its own niche.

In many ways this album sounds as though it picks up where ‘Wicked’ left off, yet it’s also fresh and drips with mojo, soul and some of Lynch’s tastiest leads in many years. Album opener “21st Century Man” is a throwback of sorts to “River Of Love” from the band’s “heyday” if you will, yet it just lays it down and E R Ethe C O tone for the record. The O Nsets RD Z CK title track opens with an acoustic swampy vibe before the chorus kicks in with velvety, soulful vocals and a solid foundation. This tune alone showcases what has been missing for so long: mojo and soul. Oni simply has it. CD M

You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t check this one out. No offense to any past members or vocalists, but THIS is Lynch Mob. Bottom line, if you are a fan of the Wicked Sensation album and what Oni and George created nearly 20 years ago, you’d have to be deaf to not appreciate what they’ve cooked up for 2009. This album simply smokes! – Stephen Wilkinson

Here in 2009 Oni has reunited with George on record. There’s a new rhythm section in ex-Whitesnake bassist Marco Mendoza and drummer Scott Coogan. The big question on everyone’s mind is whether this incarnation is worthwhile - and do Oni and George do justice to the Lynch Mob name? The answer is quite simply Y-E-S.

Vocally, he is still on top of his game. “My Kind Of Healer” is a moody rocker that has a great groove. The tune has a lengthy trail out that showcases some almost Jeff Beck-like noodling from Lynch and a groovy bass line from Mendoza that is almost hypnotizing. “Where Do You Sleep At Night” is a groove-ladden rocker that is full of feel. There are so many good songs on this album, it’s hard to find anything “weak” although naturally some songs are better than others. The album certainly has a nice, consistent flow to it. Nice production and mix overall, this is a top notch effort.

Are You Smarter Than A Nobel Prize Winner?

Let’s face it, most of us think we’re pretty well read and pretty darn smart. But not too many of us have won a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, and that is why I want to introduce you to Dr. Otto Warburg.

Dr. Otto Warburg 1931 Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Warburg won the 1931 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work during the 1920s on the then relatively unknown and mysterious disease called cancer. He successfully identified the root cause of cancer, and discovered that cancer cells, unlike normal cells, thrive in an anaerobic, acidic state rather than an oxygen rich, high pH environment. In fact, he discovered that cancer cannot grow in a high alkaline, oxygen rich environment at all. Think about this for a minute. This means we have known what causes cancer for over 78 years, but if this is true, why don’t we learn this fact in every high school biology class in America? Why don’t the cancer treatment centers, oncologists or cancer related charities shout this knowl-

edge from the rooftops? Why isn’t there a warning from the Surgeon General on every bottle or can of soft drinks or sports drinks sold in America? They are extremely acidic, after all, and can cause great damage to humans by helping to create an extremely acidic environment inside the body. And why isn’t there anything being done to tell every American to alkalize their body before it is too late? The good news is that there IS something being done to spread this news, and even more importantly, I have recently discovered an incredible way to achieve an alkaline balanced body that is simple, fast, and easy!

Change Your Water and Change Your Life! Can it really be as easy to create an alkaline balanced body as drinking a different kind of water every day? Yes! But only if it is the right kind of water, made fresh in your own kitchen every day from your very own powerful water processing machine.

Micro-Clustered for Maximum Absorption and Hydration After passing through one of these amazing machines, your water will be micro-clustered, which means it is the most effective water in the world when it comes to hydrating each and every one of the approximately 70 Trillion cells in your body. The vast majority of Americans are chronically dehydrated, which leads to a myriad of health challenges and concerns.

Every person I know wants to because of the extremely acidic lead a healthy, happy, active life, conditions of our bodies. but many people simply aren’t Alkalize or Die! Smart Money Choices For A Happy Stress-Free Life It’s a common misconception that making more money will bring more happiness and less stress, but research doesn’t show this to be the case. While more money brings a momentary thrill and a few new things, people generally adjust their lifestyles in ways that doesn’t increase their overall happiness level or decrease current stress. A better goal would be to be smarter with the money you have: buy fewer things that you don’t need, get out of debt (if you’re in it), and spend your money on things that will truly make you happy and decrease your stress level, including your future. This creates more of a feeling of abundance and personal freedom than having more money but spending it all on more expensive toys. The following are concrete ways you may be able to repurpose your finances in ways that will increase happiness and decrease stress.

Be Smart With Spending From now on, before you buy new things, really think about whether they will really improve your quality of life, of if they’ll just cause you stress (from having less money) and eventually add clutter to your home. Spending less can reduce stress.

Trade Old Stuff for New Experiences You may consider having a garage sale or selling items on eBay if you have too much ‘stuff’, and spending the money on taking classes, going on a vacation with your family, or doing something else that would create positive memories, enrich your life, and help you combat burnout.

Preparing Your Mind and Body for Physical and Financial Change

relax your body. Some find it easier to practice than meditation, as lots of us find it more doable to focus on ‘something’ than on ‘nothing’. You can play natural sounds in the background as you practice, to promote a more immersive experience. 4. Visualizations Building on guided imagery, you can also imagine yourself achieving goals like becoming healthier and more relaxed, doing well at tasks, and handling conflict in better ways. Also, visualizing yourself doing well on tasks you’re trying to master actually functions like physical practice, so you can improve your performance through visualizations as well! 5. Self-hypnosis Self-hypnosis incorporates some of the features of guided imagery and visualizations, with the added benefit of enabling you to communicate directly you’re your subconscious mind to enhance your abilities, more easily give up bad habits, feel less pain, more effectively develop healthier habits, and even find answers to questions that may not be clear to your waking mind! It takes some practice and training, but is well worth it. Learn more about using hypnosis to manage stress in your life.

2. Meditation Meditation builds on deep breathing, and takes it a step further. When you meditate, your brain enters an area of functioning that’s similar to sleep, but carries some added benefits you can’t achieve as well in any other state, including the release of certain hormones that promote health. Also, the mental focus on nothingness keeps your mind from working overtime and increasing your stress level. 3. Guided Imagery It takes slightly more time to practice guided imagery, but this is a great way to leave your stress behind for a while and October 15th - October 21st, 2009

Are You Ready For The Next Downturn?

Use Your Money to Do What You Want After cutting the extras out of your budget, if you don’t have great amounts of debt to pay off, you can think about hiring people to do things for you that you hate doing, that take time away from activities you’d really like to be doing. For example, you could have someone come and clean your house while you instead take your kids to the park; you could hire an assistant at work to offset your workload so that you can have more time for yourself; hiring someone to help declutter your house can free up the time it would take you to do so, and you’ll have more of a haven to come home to.

Cut Down On Your Debt If you’re in debt and it causes you stress, look for things you can cut out of your budget (like the morning lattes, dinners out, new clothes that you don’t need) and put it toward paying off credit card debt. You’ll eventually have something that you value more than these extras: a chance at

1. Breathing Exercises Deep breathing is an easy stress reliever that has numerous benefits for the body, including oxygenating the blood, which ‘wakes up’ the brain, relaxing muscles and quieting the mind. Breathing exercises are especially helpful because you can do them anywhere, and they work quickly so you can de-stress in a flash.
