Make Room For ‘Boom’ Actors Theatre Presents The Explosive Comedy “Boom” October 23 – November 8, 2009, At The Herberger Theater Center – Stage West In Peter Sinn Nachtrieb’s cleverly crafted comedy, Jo, a female journalism student, responds to Jules’ (a male marine biologist) ad promising “sex to change the course of the world.” When she shows up at Jules’ subterranean biology lab, she soon realizes that her dream of a “casual hook-up” has taken a much deeper turn. In this apocalyptic, sci-fi fantasy, the audience is in for a wild ride as they try to understand if meaningless sex really has meaning, who’s pulling all the levers, and just what, exactly, is going on in the fish tank. This humorous social satire explodes on stage starring Sam Wilkes as Jules, Kerry McCue as Jo, and Cathy Dresbach as Barbara. Boom is directed by Ron May (A View of the Harbor, Columbinus). The produc-

tion team includes: Kara Thomson, scenic design; Lois Myers, costume design; Paul Black, lighting design; Benjamin Monrad, sound design; and April S. Smith, stage manager. To test a lover’s fidelity is to test one’s own ability to live with the consequences. In Mozart’s witty – yet deeply human – opera, the line between laughter and heartache is perfectly drawn. The stunning mezzo-soprano Lauren McNeese, vivacious in her portrayal of Dorabella at Lyric Opera of Chicago, brings her signature role to Arizona this fall in a score that contains some of the most sublime music Mozart ever composed. Sung in Italian with English supertitles above the stage.

“Coco Before Chanel”, biographical journey to the past! Review by Stan Robinson With fall and fashion being in the air, and the Emmy nominated made-for-TV movie “Coco Chanel” (starring Oscar® winner Shirley MacLaine), the name Chanel has taken on new meaning as the person behind the name comes to the forefront. A French couturière (designer) in the 1900’s, her simple but sophisticated fashions were a radical departure from the stiff, corseted styles for women at the time. Writer/director Anne Fontaine presents a look at the early years of Gabrielle Chanel from her childhood in an orphanage to her rise as a top designer. Actress Audrey Tautou (“The Da Vinci Code” 2006) in the tile role, delivers a performance that could land her an Oscar® nomination! “Coco Before Chanel” is in French with English subtitles but don’t let that keep you from a moving story. Trick ‘r Treat to a New Classic By Randy Montgomery

“Ong Bak 2; The Beginning”, a Asian style fable with action, and heart… Review by Stan Robinson I’m particularly fond of the Asian style films that present the fables and childhood stories of their culture on the big screen. With the over the top action sequences, the style is a reminder of the fable aspect while the stories are lesson in living. “Ong Bak 2: The Beginning” is the story of a ten year old boy, after the death of his parents, is forced to live on the streets. The boy is taken in by a motley group of street dwellers; teach him the finer skills of stealing, and, how to fight. As a young man now, an opportunity presents itself for revenge against those who killed his parents years ago. Action star and director Tony Jaa, delivers exciting action and marital arts sequences while passing along those all-important insights on motivation and integrity. You can read my review at www.ScreenScene. org

A cult classic is in the making and I am glad to be able to review Trick ‘r Treat now and proclaim its future status. Well, maybe I am not the first to call it that, seeing as how the film has already formed a loyal following online and in cities such as Los Angeles where screenings have sold out and created a buzz in the “Twitterverse.” I stumbled upon Trick ‘r Treat via Twitter a few weeks ago. Being a fan of all things horror, I signed up to follow several horror film blogs and tweeters. The writer for CREEPYLA kept mentioning sold out screenings across the L.A. region and followers raved. I had to see it! Just shy of booking a flight to Burbank and heading to the New Beverly Cinema to see what everyone was talking about, to my surprise and delight, Warner Bros. released Trick ‘r Treat on DVD. My preordered copy arrived last week, and it surely didn’t disappoint. After a brief, creative and hilarious black and white trick or treating safety message, the film starts off and does so with a bang with a scene so memorable that it rivals the opening of Scream and other modern day classics. There is no real plot to speak of, rather a collection of characters and stories that overlap in some way. After the memorable opening, the film goes back in time a few hours to explain what just transpired (sort of). Set in the idyllic town of Warren Valley, Ohio, this cute little place loves Halloween and celebrates with much AZWeeklyMagazine.com

fanfare. Houses are decked out to the nines with jack o’lanterns, ghosts and other festive attire. There is a large holiday parade and a massive street party. There are also a lot of crazed killers, vampires, werewolves, and psychotic pumpkin men roaming about. Each of the four separate intertwining stories play on Halloween folklore and legends; the characters follow suit. We are introduced to a reclusive old man who lives in a spooky house, a group of trickor-treaters visiting the site of a gruesome tragedy, a foursome of party girls looking to have a good time (one of which wishes to lose her virginity that All Hallows Eve) and a young couple stalked by a murderous pumpkin creature. While the set-ups don’t always have enough back-story to completely make sense, where Trick ‘r Treat succeeds is in ambiance and atmosphere. There is some comedy, plenty of scares, and just the right amount of blood to please horror fans. The movie is also quite funny. The cinematography is amazing which makes the viewer feel immersed in what is taking place. Fans of Halloween will love the look and feel, and despite the violence taking place there, will want to move to Warren Valley to soak up the local color. Trick ‘r Treat is my new favorite Halloween themed film. The story and characters have what it takes to secure a loyal cult following that will watch this movie for years to come. Do I foresee an edited version playing on cable for 24 straight hours the day of Halloween similar to A Christmas Story? We’ll just have to wait and see. It took Ralphie and his bunny slippers year to become the phenomenon it has become today. October 22nd - October 28th, 2009

the aroma, or bouquet of the wine. Then smell the wine, and finally, the taste test. Do you like your wine sweet, dry or fruity? If you prefer the sweet wines, such as Port or Sauterne, then you’re a classic dessert wine drinker. If you like the fortified wines, with a higher alcohol content, then look for the wines that have the addition of a spirit, such as brandy.

TIME TO GO PRO IN THE WORLD OF WINE Are you a wine connoisseur, or do you just love wine? Either way, it’s a good idea to at least know something about wine. You don’t want to appear uninformed while dining at an upscale restaurant with your date. With the following wine facts, you’ll be good to go. Let’s say you’re dining at a seafood restaurant, and want to order your wine like you know what you’re doing. For pastas or seafood, white wine is best. Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio or Riesling are all good choices, unless you’re having salmon or duck, and in that case Cabernet Sauvignon would be the perfect choice. If you’re a true meat eater, and steak or prime rib are your favorites, then you might order a nice Merlot or Shiraz. For some people, the Shiraz and Syrah wines can be a bit bitter, whereas the Merlot is known to be velvety smooth, if you order a quality brand name.

Champagne lovers will truly enjoy their bubbling effervescence with such food choices as smoked salmon, eggs or oysters. It’s also good for breakfast served as a Mimosa. The great thing about champagne, is it’s good any time of day, and it’s a necessity for those special occasions when you’re looking for a nice wine out of the ordinary for your celebration. If you’ve never had real sangria before, then it’s time you indulged yourself. By simply adding a few choice fruits to your wine, it will make any occasion a party. Just pour a bottle of red wine in a large pitcher, and add lemons, limes, star fruit and mangos, and then toss in a sprinkle of brown sugar and a few cinnamon sticks, and you’re all set. You’ll be the hit of any party, as long as you know your wines. If you’ve never been to a wine tasting, then you must try it. This is the first step in deciding which wines are pleasing to your palette. First, swirl your glass of wine, to open up AZWeeklyMagazine.com

If you prefer the dry wines, then you would probably choose a wine with a small amount of residual sugar. The more sugar in the wine, the sweeter it will be. The sweeter

wines tend to linger on your tongue a little longer, but if you like a crisp, dry wine, then stay away from the sweet wines. If you’re saving that vintage wine for a special occasion, make sure it will improve with age, as some wines tend to spoil if they’re kept too long. The red wines are usually better choices for aged wine, because they form more complex subtleties. Most premium wines are only at their best many years or even decades after their bottling. Happy Tasting!

Are You Smarter Than A Nobel Prize Winner? Let’s face it, most of us think we’re pretty well read and pretty darn smart. But not too many of us have won a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, and that is why I want to introduce you to Dr. Otto Warburg.

Dr. Otto Warburg 1931 Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Warburg won the 1931 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work during the 1920s on the then relatively unknown and mysterious disease called cancer. He successfully identified the root cause of cancer, and discovered that cancer cells, unlike normal cells, thrive in an anaerobic, acidic state rather than an oxygen rich, high pH environment. In fact, he discovered that cancer cannot grow in a high alkaline, oxygen rich environment at all. Think about this for a minute. This means we have known what causes cancer for over 78 years, but if this is true, why don’t we learn this fact in every high school biology class in America? Why don’t the cancer treatment centers, oncologists or cancer related charities shout this knowl-

edge from the rooftops? Why isn’t there a warning from the Surgeon General on every bottle or can of soft drinks or sports drinks sold in America? They are extremely acidic, after all, and can cause great damage to humans by helping to create an extremely acidic environment inside the body. And why isn’t there anything being done to tell every American to alkalize their body before it is too late? The good news is that there IS something being done to spread this news, and even more importantly, I have recently discovered an incredible way to achieve an alkaline balanced body that is simple, fast, and easy!

Change Your Water and Change Your Life! Can it really be as easy to create an alkaline balanced body as drinking a different kind of water every day? Yes! But only if it is the right kind of water, made fresh in your own kitchen every day from your very own powerful water processing machine.

Micro-Clustered for Maximum Absorption and Hydration After passing through one of these amazing machines, your water will be micro-clustered, which means it is the most effective water in the world when it comes to hydrating each and every one of the approximately 70 Trillion cells in your body. The vast majority of Americans are chronically dehydrated, which leads to a myriad of health challenges and concerns.

Every person I know wants to because of the extremely acidic lead a healthy, happy, active life, conditions of our bodies. but many people simply aren’t Alkalize or Die! THE PHENOM TO FACE THE SPIDER Vitor Belfort and Anderson Silva Set To Do Battle at UFC 108 Prepare for fireworks – there should be plenty on hand. UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva will defend his title for the sixth time when he squares off against the fast, hard-hitting Vitor “Phenom” Belfort at UFC 108 on January 2, 2010 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Silva, with his quick and elusive style and sniper-like attack, holds the UFC record for most consecutive victories with 10 straight. Many fans around the world truly wonder if the highlyathletic Brazilian champ will ever be beaten. In fact, he’s been so good that UFC President Dana White and Co. have started to match him up against 205-pound fighters to give him more of a challenge. He passed

with flying colors, sending former champion Forrest Griffin running for the hills and pasting James Irvin with a highlight-reel combination. This match-up will have top- ranked middleweight contenders Dan Henderson and Nate Marquardt waiting a little longer for their eager shot at the title. Henderson actually appeared to be the front runner to challenge Silva after his most recent and emphatic victory over Michael Bisping at UFC 100. Company president Dana White indicated that it was enough to earn him another crack at the Brazilian; however, his manager, Ed Soares, made the case that Henderson should take on Nate Marquardt first to determine a clear-cut contender. Belfort, now 27-8 for his MMA career, made his return to the UFC in Dallas at UFC 103 after a four-year absence from the promotion. Belfort knocked out former middleweight champ Rich Franklin in the first round, to the delight of fans watching around the world. It was the former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion’s fourth straight win since dropping to middleweight last year.

Of course, there’s no telling which “Vitor” will show up for this one. However, if the focused, determined and highly-aggressive alter ego we all know and love should arrive, we may very well witness the first UFC defeat of the man whom many feel is simply unbeatable, Anderson Silva. In short, this is going to be a good one. Despite the outcome, the fans are sure to win either way. UFC 108, the UFC’s traditional yearend show which airs live on payper-view, is also expected to include a matchup between former light heavyweight champ Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva.

After a few years of touring with a new, invigorated lineup of Foreigner, guitarist / sole remaining member Mick Jones has finally unveiled his new lineup on record for the first Foreigner studio album in 15 years. Ex-Hurricane vocalist Kelly Hansen takes over for Lou Gramm in the vocal slot. Many people will undoubtedly get caught up in comparisons. And frankly it’s hard not to. Truth be told, Hansen’s voice simply works with the Foreigner sound. The title track opens with a punch of old school Foreigner while maintaining a fresh, modern production. “In Pieces” sounds like it could be by any newer era E R E Cgetting band heavy N OR ZO airplay onD regular CK radio. A step forward musically, yet melodically it is still Foreigner. “When It Comes To Love” has C

Overall, plenty of good songs ranging from straight up commercial pop rock to the occasional ballad, an overall good effort that will please fans of the band. Also included is a CD of remixed Foreigner classics (several of the tunes show remarkable improvement) and a live DVD. With new blood in the band keeping Mick Jones young, state-of-the-art production and new remixes of classics, it feels like the first time all over again. – Stephen Wilkinson

The “in” thing for bands in their golden years these days, when having to replace their original singer, is to essentially fill the void by finding someone who can pull off the classic material. By doing this, they more or less are looking for a clone. Judas Priest did it with a singer from a Judas Priest tribute band when Rob Halford left. Journey is on their second singer who essentially sounds like Steve Perry.

‘single’ written all over it. And if it were released 20-25 years ago, this song would have been HUGE. But in 2009 it seems doubtful anything from this album will get any attention. “Living In A Dream” is solid while “Fool For You Anyway” bares a stripped down, slightly RN’B influenced approach and a slightly different feel than what you might expect.

Band Members: Slade Echeverria- bass and vocals, Adam Juwig- guitar, Mike Kitlas-guitar, Greg Garrity-drums www.anarbor.net
Why did this band get started? To make real music and see the world. What’s the story behind the name? Mike’s sister was born in Ann Arbor, MI and she was the one who got Mike into all his music, so it was just a name idea Mike brought up when we were figuring out our name. Are you any good? Is this a trick question? Name some of your best tunes? “Let The Games Begin”, “Always Dirty”, “Never Clean”, “The Brightest Green” What do you think is most important when doing a cover tune, exact reproduction, or creative interpretation of a familiar tune? Creative interpretation, because everyone knows what the song is supposed to sound like, when we approach a cover song we want to show people how we

hear the song, or what we think the song needs, so we do it our own way. Who gets the most Groupies and why? If nobody gets any, do you have a plan to change this?
Adam, because he’s a real charming dude. Tell us a secret about the band (just between us and 100,000 readers): Slade’s first name is Rudolph, Slade is his middle name. Shh, he’s sensitive. An underwater volcanic eruption spews boiling water into the cruise ship you’re playing on, and wouldn’t you know it, right in the middle of your set! Being upright, noble folk, what music would you play to calm everyone down as they boil to death? Thats a pretty intense question. I’d have to say “One Love” by Bob Marley What is the official drink of the band? Jamba juice. How often do you perform live?
Basically every night on tour. We have, like 3-7 off days on each tour, depending on how long the tour is.

What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing?
Slade fell off the stage one time. That wasnt the funniest thing for him though... Ha ha! Who is the craziest band member and why? Adam. You just gotta meet him. What do you do different that kicks ass over other bands?
We’re ourselves - Onstage and offstage. What advice would you give a startup band? Keep doing it, don’t expect anything, and keep a good attitude, people can see right through you.

What do you think will happen to your band in the next 2 years? I think we will be doing what we’re doing right now, playing shows and enjoying life. What will people see when you perform live? A high-energy, rock-n-roll show. Your favorite clubs to play in Phoenix? The Marquee Theatre and The Clubhouse What’s the hardest part about performing your own music? Not knowing what the people in the audience are thinking.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about musicians? They don’t go to college What’s the most difficult aspect of trying to make it as a band? All of the label politics that come with making music.

Last Question… Please take a few sentences and promote your band in any way that the questions did not cover. Lie, brag, make claims you can’t possibly support, give shameless plugs, tell us the preferred groupies we should order for you…You know, the usual. Rock on! Check out our EP “Free Your Mind” which is out now and stay tuned for our Full Length Debut Record this Spring!

MONY! SECTION 52

Are You Ready For The Next Downturn? DON’T LET YOUR MONEY STOOL FALL

The real secret is that there’s no magic involved. The key is to start now and stick with it.

Most people have different financial priorities during different stages of their lives, but regardless of your age or current life stage, a balanced financial plan is like a three-legged stool. Remove one of the legs and the stool teeters unsteadily and may crash, taking you with it. The most important aspects of financial planning can be placed into three broad categories, which are the three legs of financial planning: (1) Budgeting and Saving, (2) Investing, and (3) Retirement and Estate Planning.

Investing Just as many people have a negative attitude about budgeting, many also feel intimidated by investing. Do you hear others talking about their investments and wonder how they got started? How’d they come up with the money? How’d they know what to invest in? Many people don’t know where to start, so they never start at all. Don’t be one of them. You only need to know a few basics to get started, and you can find them at Get Started in Investing.

Budgeting and Saving There’s no getting around it: a budget is a requirement for good money management. There’s no need to have a negative attitude about budgeting. Don’t think of it as a chore or a punishment. Don’t think about it as a financial diet. A budget is simply (1) a tool to increase your consciousness of how and where you spend your money, and (2) a guideline to help you spend your money on the things that are most important to you. A budget is to successful money management as a rudder is to a ship. Without it, we muddle through, unable to stay on course because we have no course charted and we have no tool for steering through the currents that constantly swirl around us.

Retirement and Estate Planning Do you envision your retirement as a relaxing time spent traveling around the country (or the world), taking a cruise, enjoying hobbies and interests you never had the time or energy for while you were working and raising a family? Without wise planning, you could end up spending your golden years working at the golden arches for minimum wage instead. And if you’re planning on Social Security to pull you through, think again. For information and inspiration on investing for your retirement, see Think Retirement! and You Can Retire Rich.

Budgeting 101 is a collection of articles about the basics of successful budgeting: setting one up, sticking to it, making the necessary changes and adjustments along the way, and staying motivated. Your saving plan goes hand-in-hand with your spending plan (budget). Without a savings plan, the chances of ever saving enough money to meet longterm financial goals or achieve financial security are very slim. Following a budget creates money for savings where you thought there was none. The Secret to Saving Money will show you the seven keys to successful saving. October 22nd - October 28th, 2009

As for estate planning, it sounds more complicated than it needs to be. It begins with a will, a revocable living trust so that your property goes to those you choose instead of those the state chooses, and a durable power of attorney for health care. Wills are not just for the rich. To find out if you need one, read Where There’s a Will.... For information on living trusts and durable power of attorney, visit Nolo’s Wills and Estate Planning site. Ensure that your financial stool is sturdy and secure by following these basic steps to strengthen the three legs of financial planning. You’ll be more than glad you did! AZWeeklyMagazine.com
