The combination of Stanley on bass, Hiromi on piano, Ruslan Sirota on keyboards and Ronald Bruner Jr. on drums was par excellence! This Chinese acrobatic spectacle(Bai Xi, meaning 100 Amazing Acts) kept the sold out audience on the edge of their seats through daring feats of aerial acrobats, contortion, balancing acts, bicycle tricks, plate spinning, hoop diving and a showcase of strength and beauty. There was never a dull moment as the entertainment wow factor reached a 10 all night! Let’s hope Chandler Center makes a return engagement with Cirque Shanghai for next season. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present La Gran Fiesta, a fourday celebration of Hispanic and Latin culture from Nov. 4–7, 2010. La Gran Fiesta opens with a performance by the precision flamenco dancers of Havana’s Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba on Thursday, Nov. 4, followed by an outdoor concert and dancing with the New York salsa band Spanish Harlem Orchestra on Friday, Nov. 5, and an intimate evening of classic songs with Broadway legend Chita Rivera on Saturday, Nov. 6.
An action-packed weekend of Latin music, dance, food and fun, La Gran Fiesta takes audiences on a journey from the rich artistry of neighboring Mexico to the cultural vibrancy of the Caribbean and South America. This free community festival features performances by Arizona’s top Latin bands; fun activities for children and families; educational exhibits and displays by local artists, including the Crafty Chica and Mantastic Crafter; a mercado with handmade jewelry, glass, paintings, mosaics and more; and Latin-inspired foods and beverages.
La Gran Fiesta also features a free twoday outdoor festival on the grounds of the Scottsdale Civic Center on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 6–7, from noon – 6 p.m., with live Latin music and dancing, delicious foods and beverages, an artsand-crafts mercado, fun activities for children and families, and much more. ‘Saw 3D’ is the seventh movie in the franchise since the first in 2004. As we all know, the formula for extraordinary circumstances doesn’t work without the ‘super-nemesis’ and Tobin Bell’s ‘Jigsaw’ sends chills just by his very presence on screen. ~ Tobin shared with me a few insights on acting, the Jigsaw character, and the Saw franchise. From my experience on set there’s basically two types of actors, those who are in ‘character’ all day and those who are ‘in & out’ with the call of ‘Action’ and ‘Cut’ Tobin: “You know Stan, I’m more the kind of guy that once I get into the character, I don’t want to break that! As you know, the day can be very long and it helps me to keep my focus on the character while I’m solidifying the essence of those finer aspects!” ~ The overall character of Jigsaw started on the printed page, what are the finer nuances Tobin Bell brings? Tobin: “Saw has been a unique experience in that I’ve had the opportunity to work with some really great artists, and everyone has contributed in so many different ways, in all of the different departments of a film crew. I’ve worked with multiple directors throughout the Saw series with a lot of conversations as they bring their particular installment to the screen. If I’ve been able to do anything throughout the course of these films, it’s been to help shape dialogue and to try to make things as delicate and as intelligent as I can. I’m always working towards that because I think that makes a great counterbalance to a lot of the mayhem that occurs in a Saw film!”

Robert Rodriguez talks ‘Predators’ on Blu-ray By Joseph J. Airdo Press members from across the globe last week found themselves engulfed in a universe where “Floop’s Flooglies” is the highest-rated television program, Black Box Unlimited Worldwide Industries rests atop the stock market and modified M4A1 carbine assault rifles are used as prosthetic legs. Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios, based in Austin, Texas, used to be the home of George W. Bush’s airport until its airplane hangers were refashioned as sound stages. Now, it is the production site of films like “Spy Kids,” “Sin City,” “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl” and “Shorts.” Props, costumes and set pieces are
scattered about the studio, acting as souvenirs of their growing list of motion pictures. The crew makes it a point to never throw anything away. Therefore, touring Troublemaker Studios resembles visiting a vast amusement park in which a “Machete’s” chop shop sign hangs over one room and the oversized helicopter from “Planet Terror” is parked outside. Rodriguez and his crew Oct. 18 took a brief break from shooting “Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World” in order to hold a media event for the Blu-ray launch of “Predators.” The movie, which hit shelves Tuesday, stars Adrien Brody as a mercenary who, along with a group of coldblooded killers, wakes up in a dense jungle on a mysterious planet and is forced to flee from a new breed of intergalactic hunters. In addition to Brody, “Predators” also stars Alice Braga, Topher Grace, Laurence Fishburne and Walton Goggins. There was also a role in the screenplay reserved for a “Danny Trejo type.” Rodriguez recalls receiving a phone call from Trejo, the star of “Machete,” inquiring about the part. “He said, ‘Hey,’” Rodriguez says with his best Trejo imitation, “‘I hear in the ‘Predators’ script there’s this ‘Danny Trejo type.’ I look just like Danny Trejo. You should hire me.’” And he eventually did. However, Rodriguez’s favorite memory from the production is seeing Predators walk around Troublemaker Studios, some of who had cigarettes hanging out of their mouths, while the sun was setting in the distance. The filmmaker already has some ideas for a sequel, using some of the larger elements that he purposely avoided including in the current film. “I probably want to include some of these ideas, a more expanded universe,” Rodriguez says. “If we stayed on that planet, it might be for a little while. There’s a lot to explore, which is nice about them not making it their home planet. You can go so many places. You can do a lot of things. There’s several ideas and directions we can go, depending on how much

Screenwriter Michael Arndt talks ‘Toy Story 3’ on DVD By Joseph J. Airdo
Michael Arndt, screenwriter of this summer’s “Toy Story 3” - which is now available on DVD at retail stores and rental outlets across the Valley felt a great deal of pressure in trying to write to the “Pixar standard” and live up to the legacy of the franchise’s first two installments. “It was basically more pressure than I’ve ever felt - or that I imagine I’ll ever feel - in my entire writing life,” Arndt says. “There were never any moments of panic or despair but I really, really, really didn’t want to let anyone down, so the pressure was pretty antagonizing for the entire four years of making the movie.” In “Toy Story 3,” Woody, Buzz and the rest of their plaything pals are back but their owner Andy is all grown up and preparing to depart for college. Therefore, the toys find themselves being donated to a daycare center where they are used and abused by age-inappropriate youngsters and a strawberry-scented teddy bear. Arndt, who joined Pixar Animation Studios in 2005 - two years prior to winning an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his first film “Little Miss Sunshine” - says that the screenwriting process for “Toy Story 3” took about three years. Once the script was finished, it took one more year of production before the final product was completed.

“I never felt shut out of the creative process of making the film - which is something that can often happen to writers on a live-action movie,” says Arndt, noting that the screenplay went through dozens of rough drafts. “But it was a deeply collaborative effort, with [director] Lee Unkrich guiding the process every step of the way, [heads of story] John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton keeping us on course and a whole team of story artists offering up jokes and ideas.”

~ Do you find the directors relying on you for those finer points since you’ve been the ‘anchor’ for seven films now? Tobin: “If you’ve played the guy a lot and it’s worked, then naturally directors, costumers, or depending on the department they’re coming from will say; What do you think about this or that, or what’s your orientation to what he would do or be wearing, what is his condition or state of mind. I think the more you play a guy, the more they want to know what you’re going to do that’s going to keep him in harmony with what’s been set up for him. One never wants to do anything that’s going to break that ‘sculpture of the character’ that’s been done so far, or make anything that’s been done so far become illogical in any way, so you always want to try to connect when you’re doing a series of films that has a continuous character. You always want to try to grow the character, and connect the dots, connect the moments from the previous films!”
Arndt adds that one of the biggest challenges the “Toy Story 3” team faced was determining how Woody would change over the course of the story. The franchise’s first installment saw the character learning to share the spotlight while the second forced him to accept his own mortality. It was finally figured out that the third installment should tackle Woody’s belief that love is dependent on physical presence. “It is only at the very end, when he witnesses Andy and his mom saying goodbye, that Woody realizes you can love someone and still let them go, and that sometimes letting someone go can be the most loving thing a person can do,” says Arndt, noting that it is a universal experience. “We all go through our lives getting to know people - childhood friends, high school sweethearts, college professors, work colleagues - that we can feel intensely connected to for part of our lives, but whom we have to let go as we move through life. “Recognizing this and learning to accept it is a fairly mature sentiment for Woody, and one that - to me, at least - nicely completes the arc of his character across all three movies.” Read more of Joseph J. Gardell had to go on – he didn’t have enough money to cover the bet. He was a senior in high school – and not old enough to drink – on Dec. 28, 1987, when he first told jokes on an Orlando, Fla., club’s stage. He’s worked steadily since, and today he’s Mike on CBS’ Monday comedy “Mike & Molly.” “I am very, very humbled,” Gardell says, taking a break from playing Harry Potter Legos with his son, a second-grader. “Where I am with this show is pretty overwhelming. At the bottom of the day, it’s a love story. These two people happen to not be perfect. They have a weight problem. Everyone has a problem, whether gambling, eating, hoarding. Love comes in all shapes and sizes, and I think we have a cool thing, like a ‘Honeymooners’ type of thing. It has a lot of heart.” Though he’s been a regular on several series and acted in movies, Gardell is still drawn to the night life of stand-up comedians. After his first turn at the open mic 23 years ago, he had to confess to the owners that he was underage. “Once they knew I could be counted on, they gave me a job seating people and cleaning the bathrooms and driving the comedians to the airport,” he says. Over the years he came to know George Carlin, Sam Kinison and Dennis Miller. What did he riff on that first night? “I was 17, so I’m sure it was nonsense,” Gardell says. “My father used to say no one should speak until they are 30.”

Collecting movie memorabilia is not for everybody. Unless you’ve got a million dollars to spare for an authentic “Frankenstein” movie poster or even a relatively paltry $60,000 for a Rosebud sled from “Citizen Kane,” you are probably better off sitting back and watching others pay big money for pop-culture relics. The new series “Hollywood Treasure,” which airs Wednesdays on Syfy, allows viewers to do just that while still experiencing the thrill that comes from chasing down such elusive items – vicariously, anyway. “It’s about hunting for the artifacts, where they come from, the stories behind them, the authentication process,” says Joe Maddalena, the show’s star, who owns the Profiles in History auction house. “It’s pretty extensive.” But be prepared: The memorabilia business is not without its perils, which range from wild-goose chases to forgeries and even fires. Take, for instance, Rosebud, the iconic sled that was actually several simple store-bought sleds purchased for “Citizen Kane,” which have become extremely valuable based on their use in one of the greatest films ever made.

The Festival at The Farm celebrates success of Arizona’s wineries There was a time when Arizona’s surging wine industry was a well kept secret. No more. National acclaim continues to flow as Arizona wines get nod after nod of acceptance. The Arizona Wine Growers Association will celebrate with the first-ever “Arizona Wine Week ,” which begins Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010. The week ends on Saturday, Nov. 6, with The Festival at The Farm, the association’s signature event. Set among the pecan groves of Phoenix’s intimate The Farm at South Mountain in Phoenix, the festival offers wine lovers an opportunity to sample the best from across the state, all in one place. More than 20 local wineries are expected to attend, representing growing regions from northern Arizona’s Verde Valley, southern Arizona’s Sonoita and Elgin, and southeastern Arizona’s Willcox. control of, Trappist Monks. Pretty simple. Except that many breweries are associated with or licensed by a monastery that may or may not have formerly produced beer. These beers are not considered Trappist beers, but rather Abbey beers. The Trappist Order of monks started in the town of La Trappe in France by a reformed member of a noble family who had been known for his worldly ways. Granted permission by the king to retire to Abbaye de la Trappe he initiated massive changes creating an order that believed in strict observance which required austerity Lately I have been hearing some confusion regarding Trappist Breweries so today we will seek to clear that up. There are only seven Trappist Breweries in the world, six of which are in Belgium and the other in The Netherlands. Anything else is, at best, an Abbey Ale, or, more likely a contract brewed craft beer purporting to be authentic. That should resolve any confusion on the matter, so I guess I will see you next week in this same spot. What’s that? You want more information? I don’t know how much you paid for this issue of AZ Weekly, but I can assure you that you will get your

money’s worth in this column (don’t worry, I know it’s a free paper…that’s the joke and why should I have to explain it?). Anyway, there are worse things I could be doing on a beautiful October day in Arizona than writing about beer. Of course there are better things as well, like sitting outside drinking beer. Anyway, if you want to learn more about Trappist Beers, read on. If you don’t want to know more, then don’t. I get paid the same whether you read this or not, which sadly is a percentage of the selling price (I refuse to explain that joke). Moving on, a Trappist Beer is one brewed by, or under the immediate

of diet, penitential exercises and, with the exception of daily chanting, absolute silence. Granted land by the local nobility, the monks grew barley and wheat as a part of their ascetic lifestyle. To sustain them during periods of fasting, they also brewed beer – liquid bread inspired by faith, patience and a desire to reach spiritual perfection. These were the first Trappists. Driven out of France in the 1700s during the French Revolution, the Trappists fled mostly to Belgium and The Netherlands where the re-established their abbeys and

began brewing beer again. Beer was produced only in sufficient quantities to provide sustenance to the monks with a portion being sold to the public to support the monastery financially. The beer became well known for its small, artisanal production qualities and was called the champagne of Belgium. In many ways these Trappist beers were the forerunners of the American craft beer. The breweries were small, independent and brewed in traditional methods…although in reality they created the traditional methods…with nothing being added unless it enhanced the product. In the 1990s commercial beer companies began to notice the popularity of the Trappist ales and attempted to associate themselves with the quality of these beers. The Trappist brewing community, in order to protect their reputations, established the International Trappist Association in 1997. They created a logo and strict criteria for acceptance in to the association and the right to use the name and symbol. Of the original eight Trappist Breweries from 1997 seven still survive. Only Mariawald in Germany no longer produces beer. Beers brewed in the Trappist tradition, but not meeting the criteria for inclusion in the association have come to be known as Abbey beers. Even beers brewed within monastery walls may not be called Trappist if they are not produced under the direct control of the monks with an economic purpose of charitable assistance, not profit. Of the seven Trappist breweries operating, two are fairly well known, three are moderately well known and two are somewhat smaller and more mysterious. Not surprisingly this has to do with availability of the product as well as the desire of the monks to become more popular. The most famous of these beers is Chimay. The monks of Abbaye

What’s Hoppening The Lost Abbey, known for their great beers and creative labels, has found themselves under attack by Pagan and Wiccan communities. Turns out that recently a very famous member of the Wiccan Community “found” Lost Abbey’s Witch’s Wit in a store. She was immediately appalled by the use of 16th Century images featuring a Witch being burned at the stake. The deluge of e-mailers didn’t seem to bother spending time researching branding nor the positioning of Lost Abbey beers. “The Lost Abbey has been about original artwork, original beers and original back label stories tying them together. I know this because it’s been my job to develop the beer, commission the original
artwork and write the back story for the label”, states Tomme Arthur at The Lost Abbey. He is very proud of their labels. They are cohesive and constantly work at pushing the boundaries of beer as art. But now, The New York Times has published a story detailing the situation between Lost Abbey and the Pagan and Wiccan communities. According to the brewery, at this time, they are taking the issue of changing the name “under advisement”. Notre-Dame de Scourmont in Chimay Belgium have chosen a more aggressive approach to funding their order and their red, white and blue labels are perhaps the most well known of the Trappist beers. Produced as a dubbel, tripel and quad respectively, these beers are a fine example of Trappist brewing. The Blue or Grand Reserve is particularly suitable for aging and will evolve and improve in flavor for up to 20 years. The other well known Trappist beer is Orval. This is the most unique of the Trappists for a couple of reasons. First, the produce only one beer; and second is that this one beer undergoes a secondary fermentation that uses 10 different strains of yeast including Brettanomyces, a wild yeast that provides a slightly sour undertone to the beer. It is also dry-hopped which serves to distinguish it further from its Trappist bretheren. The next most known Trappist beers are those from Westmalle. Producing only a dubbel and a tripel, Westmalle is considered the most influential of all the Trappist breweries. These Trappist beers speak of complexity, blending malts from Belgium, Germany and France, in conjunction with brewing water that is high in mineral spirits for a uniquely-defined style of beer. Their yeast is thought to be one of the finest and is in demand from brewers across the world that want to produce Trappist influenced beers. Rochefort is known as the most beautiful of the Trappist breweries, the beers produced at Rochefort are all dark, and known by the concentration of their corresponding worts of 6, 8 or 10. They are blended of malts and dark candy sugar, touched with
German Hallertauer and Styrian Goldings Hops and undergo a warm and fast fermentation. Next is La Trappe, the only non-Belgian of the Trappist breweries. Located in The Netherlands, they are also the brewery most like secular breweries in that they produce the most different beers. The five regular production beers are a Blonde, Dubbel, Tripel, Quadrupel and Wit. They also produce occasional seasonal releases and their Bockbier is the only lager produced by a Trappist brewery. Achel is the newcomer of the Trappist breweries, the only one that was not producing beer prior to World War I. They make a Blonde and a Brune, each in two different strengths. They have rapidly become known for their dedication to the art of brewing and their beers are of outstanding quality.

The only other spot to purchase the beer in accordance with the monk’s wishes is at In Da Vrede, a small café across from the monastery which is perhaps the best place in the world to sit and consume this spectacular beer. Beer does show up in the market from time to time, but all of it is re-sale against the monks’ wishes which accounts for the high price. We could write thousands of words about the Trappist beers and may do so at a later date. In the meantime, remember if its not one of the seven
I have left for last Sint Sixtusabdij van Westvleteren. This monastery is without question the most mysterious and least understood of all the Trappist beer producing monasteries. The Westvleteren 12 is one of the holy grails of beer drinking. It is difficult to come by and, when available, will sell for as much as $30 for an 11.2 oz bottle. The scarcity of this product is partially responsible for it regularly appearing on lists as the number one beer in the world. Why is it so scarce? The brothers at the abbey produce no more than they absolutely need to maintain the abbey and reject all commercial attempts to sell their beer. In order to purchase this beer, one must telephone the abbey several weeks in advance to secure an appointment to buy whichever of the three production beers will be available on that particular day. On the scheduled day, the purchaser arrives to the monastery, which is extremely difficult to get to and requires a very good map, pulls up to the gate, exchanges money with the brother in charge and the beer

beers listed here, it is not a Trappist beer. The other thing to remember is that these seven breweries produce some of the finest beer in the world, all of which is worth seeking out and trying. In fact, what a good idea, I may have a La Trappe Quad tucked away in my cellar, perhaps I should go dig it out.

The Pittsburgh Steelers knew they would have to play the first four games this season without their best player, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. What they didn’t know was the player who would end up filling the QB’s shoes wasn’t his replacement but a third-year running back out of Illinois. Rashard Mendenhall took the leadership reins during Roethlisberger’s league-imposed suspension and ran with it. He carried the Steelers’ offense, rushing for 411 yards and four touchdowns as Pittsburgh finished the season’s first quarter 3-1. The 23-year-old averaged 4.6 yards per carry and had two 100-yard rushing games – 143 against Tampa Bay in Week 3 and a 120-yard effort in the season opener against Atlanta, highlighted by his game-winning 50yard scamper in overtime. And Mendenhall accomplished all this even though opposing defenses knew exactly what Pittsburgh’s game plan was going to be in Roethlisberger’s absence – give the ball to Mendenhall. To illustrate: The Steelers’ passing attack during their 3-1 start was ranked last in the NFL with an average of 136 yards per game.

After checking out the reportedly haunted Ulster County Jail in Kingston, N.Y., the Ghost Hunters are off to Atlanta to investigate the Antebellum Plantation in Stone Mountain Park, a living museum made up of 18th and 19th century buildings from all over Georgia. Here’s the hitch: Workers claim spirits of those who once dwelled in these buildings came along for the ride in the new episode “The Oldest House in Georgia.’’

Queensrÿche recently returned from Iraq where they spent two weeks entertaining the troops and are now in the studio working on their next album, due out next Spring. Frontman Geoff Tate explained how the band appreciates how powerful the art of storytelling is and whether the story is being told in one song or an entire concept album, they enjoy experimenting with every album. Their latest, American Soldier is a concept album that started with stories from Geoff’s father and eventually included two years’ worth of stories from over 300 soldiers. Great White guitarist Michael Lardie attributes the band’s longevity to a love of playing music and the fans that appreciate the “Zen” of Great White. The natural evolution of the band and their music has kept them solid in the blues-rock roots but Michael enjoys trying new things as well; in case you haven’t noticed, he plays a Mandolin on their latest album Rising. KEEL released Streets of Rock and Roll in January 2010 after the excitement and energy of a reunion in 2009 reignited the creative juices and spawned new material. The flow was natural and the end result is probably their best material to date. For the band, touring with Great White and Queensryche feels more like a family reunion and they’re looking forward to seeing their fans in Phoenix again. Ron Keel extended a personal “thank you” to the fans in Phoenix for welcoming them “back home” and helping to keep the Rock and Roll dream alive. Ever since the first plastic guitar strolled onto the gaming scene, the musically inclined have managed to let the world know, much to the disdain of virtual rockers, that big colored buttons will never replace the real thing. Even with the amount of finger twisting needed to play “Green Grass and High Tides” on the highest of difficulties, pseudomusicians still couldn’t catch a break. Well, after years of insults, complaining and general unfair comparisons, Harmonix has managed to bring a bit of realism to the video game music world with its latest, “Rock Band 3.” The world of “Rock Band” hasn’t changed much. Colored dots still fly across the screen as you attempt to strum, tap and sing your way to rock ’n’ roll glory. The status quo has changed a bit with the inclusion of the keyboard. This new peripheral contains a two-octave range and plays just like its real-life counterpart. With the addition of this new device, gamers will now be able to form a band that consists of singers, bass guitar, lead guitar, a drummer and now a keyboard player.

Teenagers as zombies are common, especially when they’re forced to function before noon. Yet they still resemble regular teenagers in appearance. On Halloween, however, many teens want to slip into something more classically undead. Here, we turn to Nickelodeon’s “Big Time Rush,” showing its Halloween episode Sunday, Oct. 31. In it, the guys, being groomed as the next hot boy band, take on traditional costumes: werewolf, Frankenstein’s monster, vampire and zombie. “They needed it to be kid-friendly, and I needed to keep the boys looking hot, foxy, pop and cool,” makeup artist Antonyia Verna says. “They still need to be pop stars and look like themselves.” Creating a zombie doesn’t have to be airbrushed, as she did on Logan Henderson, who plays Logan Mitchell. The look can be achieved by applying liquid latex with a stipple sponge. Kids can also use Elmer’s glue, applied with a stipple sponge. She also recommends using Kryolan or any kid-friendly greasepaint. To give eyes that undead look, Verna used purple and black eye shadow, which she put on wet and let drip. For the dried-out lips effect, Verna says to pucker up then paint.
