Phoenix Theatre Thru November 7, 2009 Wednesday – Thursday 7:30pm Friday 9:30pm Saturday 7:30pm & 9:30pm “The ‘Nutcracker’ of Halloween,” A Vampire Tale by Scorpius Dance Theatre returns to Phoenix Theatre for its sixth consecutive season, and for the first time ever, the requisite haunt of the fall season will be set to an original music score by local composer, Kristofer Hill, with guest pieces by Ryan Breen of Back Ted N-Ted. In A Vampire Tale, a susceptible young woman emerges lost and depressed, and is lured into an assorted band of bloodsuckers by their shadowy showmanship and seductive transactions. The characters construct an intense spectacle of dark debauchery, while the innocent are both fascinated and frightened by their underworld. With A Vampire Tale, audiences get all the trimmings: dark and sexy drama, quirky and comedic episodes, and visually stunning aerial feats.

What’s going on in the fish tank? And who is that woman, Barbara, pulling levers in the corner? In this apocalyptic sci-fi fantasy, something big is about to explode. Tonight.

Benjamin Franklin’s most remarkable invention was himself. The tenth son of a candle-maker, he found fame and fortune as a writer, entrepreneur, politician, scientist, and diplomat. Throughout his life Franklin embodied what we think of as the core “American” values: hard work and selfreliance, common sense and thrift, tolerance and compassion. In this spirit, Poor Richard can be read as a primer for building and sustaining a middle class. And a vital middleclass has helped stabilize the extremes in our society ever since. With his strong mind and quick wit, he was just as comfortable in the royal courts of Europe as he was in his local tavern. Lewis, an Arizona native, has been involved in the theater, off and on, as an actor, director and writer, for more than thirty years.

How did you get the picture financed, and how did you end up with Gregg’s company producing the film?

Twisted Pictures / Lionsgate

A Flashback to the First Saw By Randy Montgomery

Late September 2004, an email came through asking if I was interested in interviewing the writer, director and producer for a new indie horror flick called Saw. Being a horror fan and having just seen the trailer, I agreed. A few days later, at a small coffee house on McDowell in Downtown Phoenix, I would meet the three men that started it all; then first-time writer (and star) Leigh Whannell, first-time director James Wan and producer Gregg Hoffman. Since Saw’s release on October 29, 2004, audiences have been asked the question, “How far would you go to save your own life?” Every year since then, the week prior to Halloween has seen a Saw release, asking fans to answer that question over and over again. At Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights last week I realized how far this franchise had come, as Jigsaw (the psychotic looking doll with the white and red face which is the alter ego of the serial killer in the film) had become the mascot of one of the largest Halloween events in the country. Jigsaw is so recognizable, no one in attendance would question who the character on the signage around the park was. An even more frightening haunted maze based on the series of films immersed patrons into Jigsaw’s

sick and twisted world which forces morally wayward people into playing macabre games for their own survival. Jigsaw’s victims are always faced with impossible choices, and each must struggle to win back his/her life, or else die trying. The following Q&A was conducted years ago, while the success of Saw was simply a wish from a group of unknown filmmakers. Film crews have changed over the years, but the original holds a place in my horror filled heart. Did you guys always want to do a horror film? Whannell: We just wanted to make a film. It just so happened that we were pitching ideas, they always seemed to be thrillers and horror. It wasn’t like we decided on it, it just seemed to work out that way. Plus it’s a great thing to do as a low budget first film, because you can achieve results with a low budget. How did you come up with the twisted scenarios and games played in the film. Whannell: The point was to not take it from anything we had seen. The whole point was to have something fresh and original. The whole film came from us plumbing our imaginations for the most original stuff we could find within the confines of the genre.

Wan: When we finished the script, we sent it to a couple of agents in LA. They loved it and wanted to meet with us. Leigh and I felt if we were going to fly all the way to L.A. to meet up with these guys, we wanted to show them that were not just writers, but filmmakers as well. We decided to pool the money we had at the time, and shoot a scene, out of the script and use that scene to try to shop and sell us as the potential guys for the project. We decided to use the jaw-trap scene Shawnee Smith played in the future, except it was Leigh in the role.

Saw: Cut to the Facts By Randy Montgomery

Hoffman: It (the pre-filmed clip) made the decision really, really easy because you had the script and you could see what exactly was in James’ head. It took a lot of the questions of using a first time director out of the equation.

Saw

Are there any plans to sell the demonic looking clown doll that appears in the movie?

Starring Donnie Wahlberg, Shawnee Smith, Tobin Bell, Franky G, Glenn Plummer

Hoffman: A lot of movies where they have merchandising programs born in the studios 18 months ahead of the market. This is a grass roots movie that was born out of nowhere and turned into something because of itself. Eventually there probably will be (some merchandising), but it won’t coincide with the movie’s release.

Saw III

Saw is all about the idea of “How far you would go to save your own life.” How far would you guys go to save your own lives?

Starring Scott Patterson, Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Louis Ferriera, Athena Karkanis

Whannell: I’d kill James for sure, that wouldn’t be a problem. Even if it was not a life saving situation. Wan: I don’t know what I would do. I hope I never find out. That’s the thing about it. You don’t know what you would do. Hoffman: If my kids were being threatened, I don’t know… It all depends on what the stakes are. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Here’s a highball straight from Dracula’s lips to yours. The red and black layers re-create the frightening atmosphere of a castle deep in Transylvania. Smooth flavors of black cherry cola greet you and are accented with sweet grenadine that surges from the depths of the concoction. Ingredients:

BLACK MARTINI Black is the signature color for All Hallows Eve so why not make your Martini match the occasion? If black raspberry or blackberry flavors are not your thing, try a regular Vodka Martini made with Blavod (a black vodka). Ingredients:

BAYOU SLIME The swamps of the bayou can be one of the scariest places on earth - and this cocktail has that same mystery of what could possibly be waiting beneath that top layer of slime. It’s really a great drink, sort of a creamy Mojito. Ingredients: ·

2 parts Cruzan Dark Rum

·

6-8 fresh mint leaves

·

1/2 part Fee Brothers Spiced Cordial Syrup

·

1 egg white

Preparation: Muddle mint leaves and syrup together, making sure to crush the mint leaves. Place all ingredients into a shaker. Shake until well-chilled and frothy. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with additional crushed mint leaves.

3 1/2 oz gin or vodka 1/2 oz blackberry brandy or black raspberry liqueur lemon twist for garnish Preparation: Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass or serve on the rocks in an old-fashioned glass. Garnish with a lemon twist. DRACULA’S KISS

·

1 oz black cherry vodka

Preparation: Coat the bottom of a highball glass with grenadine. Add ice and vodka. Fill with cola. Garnish with cherries. BLOODY-TINI Sorry, no blood in this Bloody-tini, but it does have a deep red hue that could make your Halloween guests wonder. It is actually very pleasant and light, making it an excellent and elegant cocktail for any affair. Ingredients: ·

2 oz VeeV Acai Spirit

• • • •

1 oz acai juice 1/2 oz fresh lime juice Top with fresh champagne lime wedge for garnish

Preparation: Combine VeeV, Acai juice and fresh lime with fresh ice in a cocktail shaker and shake. Strain into a chilled martini glass and top with champagne. Serve with a fresh lime wedge. AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

Are You Smarter Than A Nobel Prize Winner? Let’s face it, most of us think we’re pretty well read and pretty darn smart. But not too many of us have won a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, and that is why I want to introduce you to Dr. Otto Warburg.

Dr. Otto Warburg 1931 Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Warburg won the 1931 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work during the 1920s on the then relatively unknown and mysterious disease called cancer. He successfully identified the root cause of cancer, and discovered that cancer cells, unlike normal cells, thrive in an anaerobic, acidic state rather than an oxygen rich, high pH environment. In fact, he discovered that cancer cannot grow in a high alkaline, oxygen rich environment at all. Think about this for a minute. This means we have known what causes cancer for over 78 years, but if this is true, why don’t we learn this fact in every high school biology class in America? Why don’t the cancer treatment centers, oncologists or cancer related charities shout this knowl-

edge from the rooftops? Why isn’t there a warning from the Surgeon General on every bottle or can of soft drinks or sports drinks sold in America? They are extremely acidic, after all, and can cause great damage to humans by helping to create an extremely acidic environment inside the body. And why isn’t there anything being done to tell every American to alkalize their body before it is too late? The good news is that there IS something being done to spread this news, and even more importantly, I have recently discovered an incredible way to achieve an alkaline balanced body that is simple, fast, and easy!

Change Your Water and Change Your Life! Can it really be as easy to create an alkaline balanced body as drinking a different kind of water every day? Yes! But only if it is the right kind of water, made fresh in your own kitchen every day from your very own powerful water processing machine.

Micro-Clustered for Maximum Absorption and Hydration After passing through one of these amazing machines, your water will be micro-clustered, which means it is the most effective water in the world when it comes to hydrating each and every one of the approximately 70 Trillion cells in your body. The vast majority of Americans are chronically dehydrated, which leads to a myriad of health challenges and concerns.

Musical Magic Unleashed Beamz Interactive Making Musicians Of Us All A Dream and a Vision becomes Reality Where there’s a will there’s a way – and one local musician’s vision has officially transformed the magic of music for us all. His passion for music has enabled people of all ages to experience the delight and gratification of making music. Based in Scottsdale, AZ, Beamz Interactive, Inc. is an interactive music products company that develops innovative musical instruments and music software to enable people of all ages and skill levels to play music. Its premier product, the Beamz, is an affordable new musical instrument that allows people to make music by simply passing their hands through any of the six laser beams that each triggers different streams of musical notes and sounds. Inventor and Chief Creative Officer Jerry Riopelle leads the content creation for the Beamz Interactive team and product development. Jerry has taken his 40+ years experience as an accomplished musician, songwriter and producer, and funneled it into the creation of one of the world’s most innovative new products. His vision has set a course for music enthusiasts around the world to approach their musical passion from an extremely creative and entirely new direction.

40

Jerry Riopelle, Inventor and CEO of Beamz October 29th - November 4th, 2009

Beamz players can access over a hundred songs, both originals and top hits, for inspiration to create their own music. Beginners and children can play with ease, while more experienced musicians will be amazed at its limitless possibilities to arrange, compose, produce and record music. Powered by a computer through a USB port, the Beamz is easy to install and begin using – reading music is not required. Beamz Interactive’s technology portfolio includes multiple patents, patents pending and trade secrets covering interactive music, software, laser-based controllers, gaming applications, and related designs and devices. The Man Behind the Music Jerry Riopelle started creating the Beamz music system in 2001 after many years of envisioning an instrument that could activate sound with laser beams. The inspiration for his invention came from a childhood memory being intrigued by and tinkering with the light-activated door announcer at his favorite local ice shop. With Jerry’s passion for making music, he envisioned an instrument that anyone could play, featured many dimensions of sound that always worked together no matter how you combined them, and would provide a new performance element for accomplished musicians like himself. Using his deep understanding of music and assistance from software engineers, Jerry worked daily for years to create the sophisticated, patented system that exists today.

Raised in Tampa, Fla. Jerry moved to Los Angeles to begin his music career in the 1960’s by learning the ropes of independent record production. After playing drums for the Hollywood Argyles he signed as a staff song writer for Screen Gems. Upon hearing a single Jerry had written and produced with Clydie King titled, “The Thrill is Gone,” Phil Spector hired Jerry as a staff writer and producer for Philles Records. Jerry soon produced a Top 20 hit, “Home of the Brave,” recorded by Bonnie & The Treasures. He also produced top 40 singles for recording artists April Stevens & Nino Tempo and The Parade. That success earned Jerry a job as producer at A&M Records as well as a staff writing position at Irving Music. During that time he wrote and produced for The We Five, Brewer & Shipley, The Parade, Shango, and had songs covered by Herb Alpert, Leon Russell, and later, Kenny Loggins, Rita Coolidge, Meat Loaf and many others. During his years in Hollywood, Jerry also wrote numerous songs and

musical pieces for films and television shows. A Leader in Interactive Music Beamz interactive music compositions are creative, dynamic and spontaneous. These compositions are harmoniously designed and structured for players to perform interactive music with limitless possibilities. Unlike traditional music, where a musician plays a song by reading and performing to a defined musical score, interactive music is free flowing – there is no musical score to follow. Players are inspired to interact with the Beamz songs and create unique sounds different from any other type of instrument. Stay tuned for a closer, in-depth look at the technology itself - and how one man’s vision revolutionized the way a world of music enthusiasts approach their passion for creating music from within. The remaining members finally deciding to fly the banner of AIC again would certainly raise some eyebrows. For their first studio effort without Staley, new vocalist William DuVall comes in complimenting the style set forth by Staley yet has a bit of his own grit to show that he is not a clone brought in to re-enact his predecessor. Cantrell along with bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney lock down the rhythm section to complete the E R E C Otrademark band’s N RD ZO sound. Solid, CK unique and uncompromised, it sounds like AIC because it is. There is no attempt to put sounds and C

The grunge and sludgy sound with razor shark guitar tone which set them apart in the 90’s is alive and well in tracks such as “Acid Bubble”, “Check My Brain”, “Last Of My Kind”, “Private Hell” and “Take Her Out”. The album also touches on the more acoustic based Jar of Flies era with “You Decision” and “When The Sun Rose Again”. DuVall and Cantrell harmonize as naturally as Staley did with Cantrell over 15 years ago. Whether this album becomes a commercial smash remains to be seen. But in terms of honoring the sound, style and legacy of what they’ve done, this album is most worthy of the name Alice In Chains. Stephen Wilkinson Rockzone Records, 2155 E. There seems to be a lot of activity from bands in this decade whose lead singers have all passed on. Queen, The Doors, Blind Melon and Alice In Chains just to name a few. Some people will never accept “the new guy” simply because he isn’t the original but usually moreso as the original singer laid the groundwork in style and substance for what would shape the sound and style of the band. Fortunately for AIC, guitarist Jerry Cantrell was the dominant writer and a key player in their sound. Not to diminish the efforts of what the late Layne Staley. After all, how many bands in the 90’s copped their eerie vocal harmony style that Layne helped trademark? Exactly.

styles in that do not belong. And they’re not trying to reinvent their own wheel.

THAT ALL TOO FAMILIAR PRESSURE TO SPEND

We’re afraid of what others around us will think. “I really don’t want them to think I’m cheap, so I’ll spend more.”

·

We limit our options. This is for the person who doesn’t think about negotiating. “This was the price, they aren’t going to be flexible, and so I’m going to just pay for it.”

What to do when Pride Says ‘Yes’ and Your Gut Says ‘No!!’ Have you ever felt like you were pressured into spending money? Deep down you really knew you didn’t have the money to spend, but because of the situation, people around you or other factors, you ended up spending anyway. Those who are conscious spenders know when one of these occasions is about to occur with that all too familiar, extremely uncomfortable feeling deep in your gut. You know you’re about to go against the grain. You’re about to make a decision that doesn’t follow your values or your plan! We’ve all experienced spending pressure from friends or situations. However, this peer pressure is external, but quite often the pressure to spend is mostly generated from us and less to do with others. Ultimately, we have the opportunity to choose, right? We are the managers of our own finances, not anyone else. So, no matter how uncomfortable the situation might be, or the compelling reasons that may surround it, the external pressures can’t force us into spending. We are responsible for the final decision. Why Do We Put Pressure On Ourselves To Spend? Why do we put pressure upon ourselves? There are many reasons or situations in which this pressure stems. Do you recognize a few of them? ·

·

·

·

52

·

We assume we have to spend the same. Everyone else is spending a certain amount on the office gift or dinner, so we assume we have to match them. We feel like we have to follow the crowd. Others have the latest gadget, car, or clothes, so we create pressure to fit in and be the same. We can be conscious of others; we don’t want to hurt them. We assume that if we don’t spend a certain amount on a gift feelings will be hurt. We’re supposed to spend. Often times, we think it’s the norm to pay certain prices for services or important matters. We reason, “It’s supposed to be expensive for this quality”, so we don’t question the amount.

October 29th - November 4th, 2009

Are You Ready For The Next Downturn?

Just as with peer pressure one might often feel in high school, spending pressures have to be overcome with higher level thinking and acting. While the peer pressure in school might cause one to misbehave in school years, it’s often out grown with responsible thinking and a little self confidence. The same holds true with spending pressures. We must confront spending pressures from others and within ourselves with self confidence, logical thinking and responsible behavior. How do you release the pressure? If we believe that all external pressures result in an self inflicted internal pressure the situation can be solved right at home with us. We must look at ourselves as money managers, financial stewards and as people who carry themselves confidently in the face of these pressures. Operate Above the Pressure Operate at a level above them! Don’t let the external pressures become internal pressures, pushing against your logical thinking. Know that it’s okay to say these 10 things. ·

No.

·

I don’t have the money.

·

I can’t do that right now.

·

It doesn’t fit in my plan.

·

I’ve already spent all of my eating out money for the month.

·

I’ll have to save for it.

·

I’d rather give.

·

Let’s shop around.

·

Can you do any better on the price?

·

Nothing. Don’t say anything. It doesn’t require explanation as to why you’re not spending.

Remember, your money is your responsibility. When the bill is due, it’s not others who have to pay; it’s you, so take ownership of the situation and get back on track with bravely managing your money!
