Actors Theatre Production Worth The Climb For ‘A View Of The Harbor’
by Nicholas Connell
“If this is civilization, then we’re all in a lot of trouble” -Nick Shakespeare wrote a monologue about the seven stages of a person’s life in his play “As You Like It”, wherein Jacques reveals the slow and certain demise of a man’s faculties, minus the taxes. Even the great bard was taken to look back at the stream of life and wonder what the sum of our endeavors really meant. In Actors Theatre’s production of “A View Of The Harbor”, playwright Richard Dresser
makes sure we are thinking about this so called life we have and gives us plenty of character arcs to ponder and laugh through. This view is definitely worth the climb with our ensemble cast of characters set on the coast of Maine last summer. Director Ron May has brought Dresser’s words to life with a tea for four that is fun and revealing all night. His ‘Jacques’ monologue is expanded on the shoulders of Ben Tyler, our family patriarch Daniel, a blue blood Townsend. Ben’s portrayal of the half dead, half drunk father figure is worth the price of admission. He’s loaded with “wisdom and the right way to do things”.
But his stake in the future, Christian Miller as his son Nick, arrives to save him from certain death. Now the real party can begin and Christian is as witty and self absorbed as dear old dad. And he’s brought his latest conquest to keep his demons at bay in the form of Melody Butiu, as his girlfriend Paige. Let’s just say Melody is perfect at playing all the right cards for the family before this summer siesta is over. Surprise! Not to be forgotten in the porchlight shadows is Cathy Dresbach as daughter Kathryn. She keeps the family torch burning brightly and reminds us that “the best men in the family have always been women”.
In this age of corruption and scandal, fear and illusion, it’s still worth the risk to venture out near the cliffs and catch a glimpse of that harbor in our lives. The “View” has just the right touch to make us laugh, remind us who we are and what we have become, and maybe reveal some “whispers of our youth.” Martini’s, anyone? “A View of the Harbor” runs through November 9th at Stage West in the Herberger Theatre Center. Danny gets a teenager who is shy and nerdy but excels at a real life role playing game (Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

Did You Know?
Soul Men
In this story of friendships lost and found again, two former backup soul singers, Louis (Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd (Bernie Mac)- who haven’t spoken to each other in 20 years because of an argument that ended badly- reluctantly agree to travel across the country together for a reunion concert to honor their recently deceased lead singer (John Legend).
This film is not the raunchy comedy we have all come to expect. The writing is crisp and witty, the acting is spot-on and down-right funny. Sean William Scott and Paul Rudd are perfect, but Jane Lynch as the mentoring program’s administrator steals every scene she is in. Role Models is the funniest film I have seen this year; the advertising campaign does not do it justice.
Also Playing By Stan Robinson
Complications set in when Cleo (Sharon Leal), a beautiful young woman believed to be Floyd’s daughter, accompanies them as a new singer.
A Gorilla and a Churro By Randy Montgomery
After American Pie, Seann William Scott awaited his next role by working at the L.A. Zoo (for two days). Scott explains, “The first day I thought I was going to feed animals. But my buddy screwed me over and I was actually the churro guy. They showed me how to make the churros and do all the stuff. I was like, ‘I have a movie coming out in two months; I have an interview with Rolling Stone and I am the damn churro guy?’ The second day I was sweating, angry, making churros. I walked away and I was like, “What am I doing?’ I walked by the gorillas and got rocked in the back of the head. I looked down and saw this pine cone. I looked back at the gorilla. I was like ‘No way’. He chucked the pine cone at me. I remember feeling where I was in life. The gorilla was looking at me, and I was looking at him. We had a moment, and I was like ‘You’re right gorilla, I quit.’ I threw my hat down, and walked out. I got Final Destination the next day, and it’s all because of the gorilla.”

By Randy Montgomery Seann William Scott has starred in over a dozen feature films since his breakout supporting role as Stifler in the American Pie movies. The thirty-two year old Minnesota born actor has also appeared in Road Trip, Bulletproof Monk, The Rundown and Dude, Where’s My Car? Two of his films, The Dukes of Hazard and Mr. Woodcock were comedic hits at the box office, yet failed to win over critics. “I actually got more pleasure out of reading the bad reviews, than I did watching the movie,” says Scott jokingly. “I read the bad reviews and I was laughing so hard.” Scott went on to explain how a hit in the movie business is extremely important. “You really have to have a success,” he says. “I remember watching Vince Vaughn in The Wedding Crashers, and it was… so rewarding to see him going back to that Swingers character. I needed to find a film that would work. I want to cater to the audience that gave me a career and try to put a different spin on it.” Scott found what he was looking for with Role Models, where he stars as Wheeler, an energy drink employee who visits schools with his buddy and co-worker Danny (Paul Rudd). The Minotaur energy drink has the animal as the mascot, and Wheeler is the man in the suit. Danny is the motivational speaker who uses positive marketing to push the drink on teens. After an unfortunate mishap with the company vehicle and a bronze statue, the two friends are offered public service or jail time. Opting for public service, they end up at Study Wings, an organization that

pairs adults with children who need friends. Danny is paired up with Augie Farks (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), a role-playing lair-obsessed introvert. Wheeler is given Ronnie Shields (Bobb’e J. Thompson), a foul-mouthed pre-teen who screams “I don’t want to take my pants off,” and, “I like boobies.” Having to deal with both of these strange kids proves to be a challenge, while under the watchful eye of Sturdy Wing’s director and ex-drug addict Gayle Sweeny (Jane Lynch). Laughing, Scott believes he has a chance at one of those golden statues for Role Models. “I think the Academy feels bad because they didn’t award me for Dukes of Hazard,” he jokes. “They are embarrassed because… I didn’t even get nominated. I think I have a chance for this movie.” Scott may not be holding his breath for an Oscar next year, but he should be pleased to know that advanced screening audiences roared with laughter, and if it were up to them, he probably would be given something. Possibly an MTV Movie Award? Despite his long list of credits, and heartthrob status with many moviegoers, the humble yet outgoing actor values each role and never takes anything for granted. “I just try and take it one movie at a time,” he explains. “I am at that place where I am still fighting for each job.” Humble or not, there was one thing Scott refused to do: “They actually wanted to shoot the poster with me in that (Minotaur costume). I was like, ‘No way. I am not going to be on billboards in New York, Los Angeles, and all over the country dressed like a damn man bull.’” AZWeeklyMagazine.com

The Men Who Would Be Bond By Stan Robinson
When the latest James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace opens on November 14th, it will mark the 22nd Bond movie, signifying a span of 45 years, which holds the current record for the longest running movie series in film history. A lot of us “boomers” were present at the birth of James Bond in the movies. We all have memories of the time when we became “Bond loyalists”. Mine is cutting class in high school to be one of the first to see the second Bond film, From Russia With Love in 1963. By the time I finished high school, I had viewed two more Bond films and had read all of the Bond novels and short stories. For a lot us “boomers”, our favorite Bond is Sean Connery, the first actor to play the British secret service agent on the big screen. Connery personified the character author Ian Fleming created. In talking with movie goers of various ages, I’ve learned that the actor they grew up watching as Bond is their favorite. And rightly so. We’re all bearers of our time, those formative years that have shaped who we are and those memories of events that keep us grounded.
Bond” in an American TV adaptation of Casino Royale on the TV series Climax! (1954). The show was 60 minutes long and it gave American TV audiences a first look at the hero. Barry Nelson’s Bond was an American interpretation of the English spy from the Fleming books.
George Lazenby George Lazenby, who only did one movie as James Bond, brought to the role a younger more physical character in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), one of the best films in the series.
Thomas Sean Connery August 25th, 1930 -
Connery’s first appearance as Bond was in Dr. No (1962). By the time he finally left the EON produced Bond series after Diamonds Are Forever (1971), he had become a household name and an actor of international fame. Connery left the Bond role behind in 1971 after appearing in six movies, and returned for a seventh in the independently produced Never Say Never Again (1983). He continues a highly successful acting career, winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in The Untouchables (1988).

Connery starred as James Bond in Dr. No (1962), From Russia With Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and Never Say Never Again (1983).
He was the first person to play “James Bond” visually. Bond had been played by other actors, but only in radio dramas. Nelson appeared as “Card Sharp Jimmy November 6th - November 12th, 2008
Roger Moore starred as James Bond in Live And Let Die (1973), The Man With The Golden Gun (1974), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Moonraker (1979), For Your Eyes Only (1981), Octopussy (1983), and A View To A Kill (1985).
September 5th, 1939-
Considered by many to be the model that all other Bond portrayals will be compared, Connery’s debonair yet dangerous appearance, along with his wry delivery of innuendo, set the stage for James Bond. His delivery of the line, “Bond, James Bond” is legendary.
Barry Nelson
Moore had established a reputation in TV series like Maverick, Ivanhoe, The Saint, and The Persuaders for combining action and light comedy. His Bond, which came into its own with The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), brought a tongue-in-cheek humor to the series which gave the films a different dimension as he developed the character.
AZWeeklyMagazine.com
Lazenby was offered a 7 picture movie deal by the Bond producers at EON, but quit the role. He didn’t think that the character would survive the new hippie culture that was becoming part of society in the late 60s and early 70s. Producer Cubby Broccoli remarked that Lazenby could have been the best Bond had he not quit after just one film.
Timothy Dalton March 21st, 1946-
With Timothy Dalton’s James Bond, out went the humor and in came a more serious spy in a style closer to Fleming’s character. Bond was now living on the edge. Back was the lethal edge that Sean Connery brought to the role, and along with Dalton’s resilient persona, Bond returned to the “License to Kill” spy.
Roger Moore October 14th, 1927-
Although Roger Moore’s name was mentioned in the original Bond casting search, his commitment to the TV series The Saint precluded him from being seriously considered for the role. He did eventually get the role in 1973. Moore, although older than Connery, brought a lighter attitude to the role.
Timothy Dalton starred as James Bond in The Living Daylights (1987), and License To Kill (1989).
Pierce Brendan Brosnan May 16th, 1953-
Pierce Brosnan was widely known as Remington Steele, a private investigator who was charming, sophisticated, frequently inept, and always wittier than wise in the ways of solving cases. In 1986, Brosnan was the first choice after Roger Moore left the role. Ultimately, Remington Steele cost Brosnan the part

when the series producers refused to release him from his contract. The role went to Timothy Dalton. As fate would have it, in 1995, Brosnan was cast as 007 after Dalton left and starred as James Bond in the very successful Golden Eye. Pierce Brosnan starred as James Bond in Golden Eye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999), and Die Another Day (2002).

Ian Lancaster Fleming was born to a very well-to-do family involved in banking in the UK. His father was a member of Parliament, and Ian was expected to follow in the same tradition. In 1939, and not thrilled by the aspects of his predestined profession in banking, he secured a position in the Foreign Office. As it turned out, the assignment took him to the Soviet Union and he realized that he was, in effect, spying for the Foreign Office!
Daniel Craig March 2nd, 1968-
Daniel Craig is the latest actor to play James Bond. With his work in a number of European films, Craig was one of many actors considered to take over from Pierce Brosnan. He officially accepted the role in October 2005, and starred in Casino Royale in 2006. Casino Royale went back to the early days of Bond as a spy learning the hard, cold reality of his profession, where all is not what it seems. Craig returns in the next installment of 007, Quantum of Solace, opening November 14th in the US. Who is your favorite Bond? You can place your vote in the poll at www. ScreenScene.org
Members of the Foreign Office referred to his style of writing his reports as the “Fleming flair”. His style and story-like approach to his reports, along with his seemingly limitless knowledge of his subjects, made the usual dry report a pleasure to read. After service in 1945 while in Jamaica, he wrote the first draft of a novel, “Casino Royale”. During the next 12 years, Fleming defined, refined, and personified his character, James Bond. On August 12th, 1964, Fleming died at the age of 56, and left behind a character that many who knew him said had a great many biographical traits. Ian Fleming’s books: Casino Royale (1953) Live and Let Die (1954) Moonraker (1955) Diamonds Are Forever (1956) From Russia, With Love (1957) Doctor No (1958) Goldfinger (1959) For Your Eyes Only (1960)
Albert “Cubby” Broccoli,
Quantum of Solace is the first Bond movie not based on one of Ian Fleming’s novels. “It’s an entirely new story,” says Wilson. “The title is from a Fleming short story, and has various meanings and interpretations as to how it fits in with the film. As described by Fleming, ‘solace’ is a measure of comfort. When a relationship breaks down you know that it’s irretrievably broken if there’s not a quantum of solace, not a measure of comfort between the two people. And that’s what the short story is about. At the end of Casino Royale I think that’s the way Bond feels about Vesper Lynd and that relationship. On the other hand, he is desperately looking for a bit of comfort himself.”

Producer April 5th, 1909- June 29th, 1996
Albert “Cubby” Broccoli was born into an Italian-American family on Long Island, New York. At the beginning of the 1950s, Broccoli moved to London. With his skills for business ventures, he used the subsidy he received from the British government to make films in the UK with British casts and crews. In 1962, Broccoli teamed with Harry Saltzman to create the production company, EON Productions and its parent company, Danjaq, LLC. Broccoli produced the first Bond movie, Dr. No, that year, and his involvement in the series continued until his death. He was the producer of all the James Bond films up to Golden Eye (1995). His family, particularly daughter Barbara Broccoli and stepson Michael G. Wilson, have continued to produced the James Bond films. In 1981, “Cubby” was honored with The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for his work in film and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Broccoli died at his home in Beverly Hills in 1996 at the age of 87. Of Casino Royale, Barbara says, “It was always an ambition of my father’s and Harry Saltzman’s to film the story, but sadly, they were never able to. So when it finally became available to us (she and Michael), we leaped at the chance. I like to think that I’m doing this for my dad”. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Personal Chef Service is a Special Gift The Grill at the Fairmont Features New Menu Everyone loves a heart-warming, personalized gift, and nothing fits that description better than an expertly cooked, sumptuous meal. Chef Stephanie Heller, owner of RIPE Personal Chef Services, is seeing a dramatic increase in giving the gift of her services as an extra special way to show a person they are appreciated. Economic fluctuations have shifted the perspective of many people, but the idea of a personal chef- once thought of as an option for the rich and famous - is now a cost effective option for gift-giving.

“It is a way of feeling luxurious without the exorbitant price tag,” says Steve C., owner of a mid-size technology firm in Scottsdale. “I wanted to show my A-level employees and special clients that I really cared about them during the holidays; I didn’t just want to hand out cash or gift cards that have no meaning. The best part was she worked with me and created gifts to suit each person individually, and I was able to choose services I knew they would enjoy.” Steve purchased a package of services from Stephanie, and each gift was customized. The in-home functions ranged across a single dinner party, a series of four cooking sessions, and an intimate cooking class for twelve people.

Janice Decker, “the rate of preterm births, babies born too early and too small, has increased by 17% in the last ten years. That means that in a year, nearly 13,000 Arizona babies are born prematurely and may face life-long disabilities such as cerebral palsy or blindness, and life-threatening complications such as heart and lung disease. Thanks to Chef Vincent and our other featured chefs & celebrities, we are bringing this message to more people and helping to raise funds to find the causes and cures of prematurity.”

Dirty.Com Hosts Screaming Halloween at Barcelona Photos By AJ Calzada
By Katie E. Hill Last Friday night, North Scottsdale’s preeminent nightclub venue, Barcelona, ushered in an unforgettably wicked weekend bash with the naughty ‘Vampires and Vixens Halloween Event’. Hosted by none other than TheDirty.Com’s renowned Nik Richie, the highly-anticipated celebration offered free admission to ladies dressed in Halloween attire, costume contests that tendered $7000.00 in cash and prizes, bottle service specials that presented exquisite selections such as Bacardi and Grey Goose, and a very exclusive VIP reception. Barcelona has maintained a rock-steady reputation for its distinguished ability to throw classy, colossal galas that entertain high society and the general population alike.
16
“I absolutely love attending events at Barcelona; it’s so much fun to be able to mingle with celebrities; I never know who I might brush shoulders with!” exclaimed Bridget Gest, 28, of Scottsdale. This loyal Barcelona devotee accompanied the The Dirty.Com’s dedicated fans, who were cause for a huge, happy Halloween celebration. Hundreds of guests decked out in assorted apparel waited in long lines in order to walk the red carpet. Photos were taken of the attendees while they awaited entrance to the club. “I feel like such a celebrity having my picture taken!” said Dean Shaker, 31, of North Phoenix. “If the scene is this amazing outside, I can’t imagine the insanity of how it’s going to be on the inside.” The scene became even hotter with the arrival of the night’s central figure, November 6th - November 12th, 2008
Richie. Dressed to the nines, The Dirty. Com’s creator, who also masterminded the ‘Vampires and Vixens’ theme and function, was a long-anticipated arrival for many of the evening’s revelers. “I can’t believe that I’m partying with Nik Richie!” said Jesse Martin, 24, of Tempe. “I check his website daily for updates. It’s so hilarious and crazy the things that are posted; it’s the best reality entertainment website out there.” His friend, Bryan Duggar, 25, excitedly agreed. “That dude’s website is amazing,” he said. “The pictures and the commentary that goes along with them are by far the best form of blogging I’ve ever seen on the internet.” As for Richie, he stated that he thought of the idea of creating “the first reality blog because entertainment reality had become such a hot [phenomena]. The website makes everyday people into celebrities…and receives [approximately] half a million hits per day.” Richie’s success continues to grow at a rapid pace, as his website went worldwide in January of this year. Richie’s goal is to equal the success that myspace has achieved within a year. The immense accomplishment of the ‘Vampires and Vixens Halloween Event’ proves that his goal has a legitimate chance of becoming reality. It was the pairing of legendary Barcelona night club with the notorious Dirty.Com that resulted in an extraordinary Halloween night. Whether one was dressed in costume or simply dressed at all, the movers and the shakers of the Valley united in celebration with one goal in mind; to paint the town blood red in thrilling fashion. Mission accomplished. AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

So how did the Halloween parties go? Send me your pics or share your stories! I was at the Ghost Ball and had a blast with all of you sexy and fun peeps! This week we have a few unique event and items for you so keep on reading to find out what happened, what’s happening, and what will happen in the Valley. BACARDI® Flavor Exchange: One of the best things about the Valley is there is always something to do whether its Tuesday night and you’re ready to get crunk, or it’s Saturday afternoon and you need a day-time cocktail hour to prep for the night. Then there are some Sundays, when you know you should be taking it easy, but you need to close out the weekend right. That was the Night Owl last Sunday. I was bored, needing a little extra motivation to face Monday, and thank goodness I found the Bacardi Flavor Exchange. In an effort to reclaim Sunday as the start of the week, and to bring flavors of the world to everyone, Bacardi hosted ‘Flavor Exchange’, a carnival inspired party, where the mojito was the drink of the night; party revelers were encouraged to create their own Bacardi concoctions; and hot Latin ladies danced to hot Latin beats. I tried Bacardi with lemon, grape, and mango, but my favorite is still the ever-refreshing Bacardi mojito. Needless to say, it was exactly what I need to help me get through until Thursday, then I start to get that bored feeling again, desperate for some motivation. Hell On Wheels: If you have never been to a Roller Derby competition you are really missing out. It combines the speed and agility of soccer, and the knockout, rough and tumble fighting of hockey. In other words, it kicks ass. What makes the sport even more interesting to watch is that all the players are women, who are not afraid of broken bones and black eyes. I always wanted to be a Roller Derby chick, but my inability to skate stands in my way. Until I master four-wheel skates, I’m content to watch others throw down, like in the new documentary Hell On Wheels. This film, which has been a pick at over ten film festivals, including the South By South West and Tucson Film festivals, follows
18
Texas women overcoming a myriad of obstacles in their efforts to resurrect and revamp the sport, and marks their success as Roller Derby goes international. The film shows viewers a behind the scenes peek into the lives of these women, revealing that when the skates come off, they’re just regular women. You can see all the upclose fisticuffs of the film here in the Valley for its one and only showing on Thursday, November 20th, 8pm at Chandler Cinemas. Admission is $6. Check out, www.hellonwheelsthemovie.com for more information. Recessionista Spa Package: Falling stocks, plummeting home values, increased food and living expenses: It’s enough to drive a Night Owl to not drink! If tearing up the town Night Owl style isn’t doing it for you anymore, it’s time for a change. Don’t let the economy leave you feeling blue and your skin looking less than radiant; help is on the way! The Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort’s Aji Spa will help to shake off the economy woes with its “Recessionista Spa Package”, which combines a full day of treatments for one economically friendly price. Begin with a 25-minute, stress–busting massage, followed by a facial cleanse and masque, a pedicure and manicure, and a poolside lunch. Offered from $199, this full day of pampering is available through the end of the year. To get a dose of affordable luxury, book your “Recessionista Spa Package” at www. wildhorsepassresort.com. Chandler Wings: In this season of football, who doesn’t love some good buffalo wings? For you folks in Chandler, a new place has opened. Buffalo Wings & Rings has opened its 42nd U.S. location. Located at 1760 W. Chandler Boulevard, just east of Dobson Road, Buffalo Wings & Rings serves Buffalo-style wings soaked in savory sauces, Hot Garlic Sloppy Fries, Saratoga Chips, and Curly-Q French Fries. Burgers, chicken sandwiches, and all that other good bar stuff is on the menu. If you go, let me know how it is. For more info, visit buffalowingsandrings.com.
Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

Jokes of the Week From Jokes2go.com
The three stages of sex in marriage: 1. Tri-weekly 2. Try-weekly 3. Try-weakly A little Catholic kid was praying as hard as he could. ‘God,’ he prayed, ‘I really want a car.’ Jumping up and dashing to the window, he saw that the driveway was empty. ‘God,’ he prayed again, ‘I really NEED a car.’ Still no answer to his prayers. Suddenly the kid stood up, ran into his parents’ bedroom, and grabbed the statuette of the Virgin Mary off the mantelpiece. He wrapped it up in ten layers of paper, using three rolls of tape and a spool of twine, then stuffed it inside a box at the very bottom of his closet. ‘Okay, God,’ he said, getting down onto his knees again, ‘if you ever want to see your mother again...’

Tempe- Mudvayne will be performing at The Marquee Theatre on Sunday, November 9th with supporting acts 10 Years and Snot, in support of their fourth studio album The New Game. Featuring the lethal first single “Do What You Do”, the album is an electrical storm of musical fury, a lesson in controlled chaos that tempers hard rock, heavy metal, prog rock, and sadistic splatters of pop into an onslaught of metallic highs and emotional lows; rushing surges and pronounced blows. Although recording for The New Game began in 2006, fans may wonder why it’s being released more than a yearand-a-half later. After completing that album, the band went back into the studio to record another album, due for release in 2009. “Someone may ask where we went,” says bassist Ryan Martinie. “Well, we went into the Mudvayne woodshed and wrote two records! It’s been different, but it’s been great, it’s being able to have our cake, and eat it, too. We got to have something that we love, that is a part
of us, and we’re able to connect with it at a personal level before we go out and give it to everyone else after we’ve had our chance to live with it. It gives the whole album more of a cliffhanger feel for us, sitting on the edge of our chairs for a year-and-a-half going, ‘This is our record, we love it, but what’s everyone else going to think of it?” The New Game

By Stephen Wilkinson/ Rockzone Records Metallica finally sounds like Metallica again after 20 years. Although not their best album, Death Magnetic is easily their best effort since 1988’s And Justice For All. After years of working with producer Bob Rock, who produced their commercial breakthrough Black Album, it is refreshing to hear what old style sounds the band has to offer in 2008. Producer Rick Rubin guides the band back to familiar territory when they were at the forefront of their genre instead of trying to stay current, wear eyeliner, cut out guitar solos, and anything else that this very same band would have scoffed at in 1986 but ended up doing in later years. Certain words come to mind when listening to this album that remind one of the Metallica of old; aggression, fervor, speed. James Hetfield spits out lyrics as if they were bullets in a rapid fire succession. Lars Ulrich pounds away in his old school slamming ways. Kirk Hammet solos

freely and feverishly after being restricted to zero soloing on 2003’s St. Anger. New bassist Robert Trujillo, now a 5 year veteran of the band, is like his predecessor Jason Newstead, horribly lost in the mix. The songs, although not instantly classic as the Cliff Burton era albums, are still going to be tough to not get into. Rockzone Records is located at 1721 E. Suns Open on Good Note, then Stung
San Antonio- The Phoenix Suns opened the ’08-’09 season the best way possible: an 103-98 away win in San Antonio. The contest started on a light note, as Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich applyied the ‘Hack-aShaq’ strategy in the game’s first few seconds. The big fella ended with 15 points and 13 boards (5-8 from the line), F Amare Stoudemire finished with 22 points and 8 rebounds, while G Steve Nash had 13 points and 13 dimes. New Orleans and super Hornets Point Guard Chris Paul (20pts, 10assts, 8rebs) gave the Suns a dose of their own away game mojo medicine by dominating throughout a108-95 victory at US Airways Center, but then Phoenix stayed above .500 with an easy win over the visiting Portland Trailblazers last weekend. Cards Take Rams by Horns

St. Louis, MO- Antrell Rolle started the snow ball that ended as a snow boulder when he picked off Rams QB Marc Bulger at the St. Louis 40 yard line and danced his way into the end zone for the Cardinals’ first score. From there, the points kept accumulating, with another impressive showing by rookie RB Tim Hightower featuring a 30 yd touchdown run, and two scores coming by way of WR Anquan Boldin and Jerheme Urban. Kicker Neil Rackers completed the scoring with two field goals to account for the final 34-13 score. Cardinals QB Kurt Warner continued his blistering offensive pace with a 23-34, 342 yard, 2 touchdown, zero completion performance. Bulger had a frustrating day- mostly because he was the team’s leading rusher with 16 yards- which resulted in two picks, one fumble lost, and less than 250 total yards total offense. Up next for the Cardinals is the home date with the San Francisco 49ers in a rarely-slotted Monday Night Football game.

PHOENIX - Arizona State University and the Herberger Theater is treating students and community members to a night on the town with a free jazz concert and a “green” business networking event. The ASU Jazz Combos will headline the next Green Jazz Series concert, which takes place Tuesday, Nov. 11th at the Herberger Theater in Phoenix. The green networking event begins at 5:30pm followed by the concert at 6:45pm. The series, which runs through April 2009, is sponsored by Arizona State University Online and the Herberger Theater Center. Proceeds from the concert series will support the Green Survival Initiative (GSI), a Phoenix-based sustainability project. The ASU Jazz Combos take their audiences through the history of improvised music from New Orleans to 52nd Street and beyond. These primarily acoustic groups range in size from four to seven. Their
small size allows audiences to see the magic of jazz improvisation in action as individual players stretch out and tell their musical story. The jazz ensembles perform frequently on campus, as well as making numerous off-campus appearances in clubs and resorts around the Valley. Michael Kocour, an associate professor and Director of Jazz Studies at Arizona State University, heads up the student-led ensembles. The Herberger Theater (Stage West) is located at 222 E. Monroe St.in Phoenix. Visit http://www/swgreen.com or www.HerbergerTheater.org for more information or contact the Herberger Theater box office at (602) 254-7399.

Scottsdale Fashion Week Draws Major Attention By Cynthia Dunne, SFW Spokeswoman www.scottsdalefashionweek.com
Guests experience fashion-as-entertainment on the runway; they party, they shop. You might say that SFW strives to be to fashion what the FBR Open is to golf. Designers and supporters have stepped up remarkably! They have shown great foresight given the array of economic news. Champions of fashion such as Scottsdale Fashion Square, Scottsdale Waterfront, SouthBridge – even global brands such as Finlandia, Fiji water, Chambord, W Hotels, Nordstrom, Dillard’s; local proprietors extraordinaire such as Rolf’s, PV Skin Klinic, Moss Spa and SFW Luxury Pavilion; and participants who include the Art Institute of Phoenix and even the Phoenix Art Museum – they’ve all caught the vision. SFW is a creative, stylish show of fashion and fine living that draws visitors and reaches a broad demographic; by age and gender. SFW even has a Wearable ArtWalk on Thursday, November 6th, starting at 7pm in the Scottsdale arts district and on the SouthBridge Runway. The fact is SFW provides an unusual platform to market fashion, fine living products, and stylish brands. It’s a celebration that has caught fire regardless of economic news. It’s also everyone’s chance to get out there and support local design talent on the runway, such as Angela Johnson, Cinzia Designs, Misty Dawn, John Paul Juene, Allison Leigh, Bri Bridge, Amelia Walsh and on and on! These designers are inspired, and SFW has drawn them from Arizona as well as from San Diego, Florida, Las Vegas, and even New York. Condé Nast executives are attending the show; we’re also talking to NYC editors at Women’s Wear Daily who were nudged by writers in their LA bureau about SFW. We are changing the ‘fashion week” paradigm. “Fashion weeks” are typically industry-only events. That is, they are accessible only to buyers, fashion media, and celebrities, and by invitation only. SFW opens the tent directly to the consumer, and yet has retained that sense of “specialness” in the runway shows through the entertainment factor. We are delivering “fashion as entertainment” all the while providing a new showcase for design talent; local and global. We couldn’t do this if we didn’t have something in Arizona that everyone else wants – our lifestyle. It’s always been that way, and somehow Scottsdale Fashion Week has captured that vision. Everyone loves looking good and feeling good; that’s ‘fine living.’ That’s Scottsdale Fashion Week. And if we can launch a few careers and make a few sales at the same time, all the better.

Jackson 5 Reuniting…Really?
That’s right, Michael, Tito, Jermaine, Jackie, and Marlon- and even Janet and little brother Randy- are getting their reunion on and are planning a tour of some sort, according to Jermaine Jackson in a recent announcement he made in Sydney, Australia. If you thought the Led Zeppelin reunion tour (see below) would be the ‘oldie but goodie’ mega-act of the decade, this news could offer some reconsideration to that mindset. Of course, there might be something said for loose talk at a celebrity function, but if we can’t trust Jermaine Jackson, who can we really trust?
Usher Getting His International Groove O
Super suave R&B icon Usher is joining the ranks of Lex Luthor, Dr. Evil, and Barney: he intends to rule the world. For his next studio release to follow ‘08’s Here I Stand, he is planning a ton of travel in the hopes of incorporating global influence into his music. This newly-expressed worldliness comes from the simple desire to “Try new things,” and work with a diverse set of artists, according to the superstar.
Plant a Question Mark in Zeppelin Reunion Tour It has been no secret that Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and original Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham’s son, Jason Bonham, have been joyously jamming in London for the past few months in anticipation of a Zep reunion tour, but lead singer Robert Plant is reportedly uninterested in having a role. Plant is currently active in the Bluegrass genre alongside artist Allison Krauss, and apparently doesn’t want the volume that came with his old occupation. According to Jones in a recent interview with BBC Radio, the band is currently testing out new lead singers.
The Beatles Meet the Joystick
With help from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon, and Olivia Harrison, Apple Corps Ltd., Harmonix, and MTV Games are developing an interactive ‘Rock Band’ video game featuring the Beatles that will hit shelves sometime in 2009. Apple is partnering with EMI Music, Harrisongs Ltd, and Sony/ATV Music Publishing to make the project possible, making the undertaking a feel good story of harmonious corporate and artistic synergy. According to those involved, the exciting part of the experience is introducing Beatles music to a new generation of gamers who can relate to it in a format they’re used to.
