Ross’s other blistering performances at celebrity roasts honoring mega stars like Joan Rivers, Hugh Hefner, Pamela Anderson, Jerry Stiller, Drew Carey, Shaquille O’Neal, David Hasselhoff, Charlie Sheen, and Donald Trump has crowned him as a “One-Man Verbal Assault Unit”. Jeff’s own Comedy Central TV show called “The Burn” finds him joined by a group of fellow comics to skewer the week’s hot topics and head into the field to take aim at public figures and current events. Ross, who has appeared in the last ten Comedy Central Roasts, was also one of the executive producers of the show.

THANK A VETERAN WITH A FREE HAIRCUT

serving our country. It’s one small way to show you truly care and appreciate their service.”

Great Clips awards customers with free haircut cards to give Veterans through 2013 When we see men and women in military uniforms, many of us want to walk up and thank them for devoting their lives to preserve our freedom. Now, you can show our appreciation by awarding active or retired U.S. military members a free haircut. It’s all part of the “Thank a Veteran” promotion from Great Clips, the world’s largest hair salon brand. Great Clips leaders say the gesture is one small thank-you for our veterans’ service to country.

How It Works:

• •

Shears Salute

• On Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11th customers who come in for a haircut at any U.S. Great Clips salon will receive a free haircut card to give to an active/ inactive/retired military member of any branch, including the National Guard. Military members can also come in on Veterans Day for a free haircut or to pick up a free haircut card to use, with proof of service, any day before Dec. 31, 2013. “We’re honored to help the entire nation show appreciation for the men and women who have served our country,” says Great Clips CEO, Rhoda Olsen, who is married to a Vietnam veteran. “We invite everyone to come into a U.S. Great Clips salon on Veterans Day (Nov. 11) to purchase a service and pick up a free haircut card. Give the card to your veteran neighbor, family member or just someone you notice is a veteran to thank them for

Customers come into any U.S. Great Clips salon on Nov. 11 and, with the purchase of a service, receive a free haircut card to give to a veteran. Limit one card per customer. The free haircut cards are redeemable by veterans at any U.S. Great Clips from Nov. 11–Dec. 31, 2013 with proof of service. The promotion applies to veterans only. Veterans who visit Great Clips in the U.S. on Nov. 11 receive either a free haircut that day or a free haircut card to redeem by Dec. 31. After Nov. 11, veterans must have a free haircut card to get the free haircut.

“Many of our franchise owners, corporate staff and Great Clips stylists have served in the military, or have family members or customers who have served, so we are all excited to be a part of this nationwide ‘thank-you’ to our men and women in uniform,” says Terri Miller, Great Clips vice president of marketing & communications. “To make sure as many veterans as possible have the opportunity to get their free haircut, we extended this promotion through the end of the year. We want to give these great people more time to visit a Great Clips and redeem this thank-you card for a free haircut in honor of their service.”

“ARIZONA LANDS ITS OWN “TRUE” MUSIC FESTIVAL”

The inaugural True Music Festival is almost upon us. On Saturday, December 14th at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, right outside beautiful Scottsdale, AZ, expect the first major festival of its kind in Arizona to bring some scorching heat to the Southwest state that is already known for its warm climate. With the initial lineup announcement that consists of the sonic and aural force that is Bassnectar, experimental rock outfit The Flaming Lips, hip-hop impresario Wiz Khalifa, indie-pop duo Capital Cities, and indie-folk band Lord Huron, True Music Festival is quite literally staying “true” to its promise of bringing a major multi-genre music festival to the state that is home to some of the most majestic, aweinspiring, and jaw-dropping sights in the United States. True Music Festival just announced its final artist additions to round out the lineup as well. The electrosoul of Detroit producer GRiZ will get everyone moving, and will compliment the future funk of LA’s Kill Paris perfectly. Indie-pop act Hellogoodbye just released their third album Everything Is Debatable to rave reviews. He’s My Brother She’s My Sister, Kopecky Family Band, Berner, and Chevy Woods will complete the smorgasbord of multi-

genre talent from the major acts that TMF prides itself on. Being an Arizona festival and all, we wouldn’t be true to our roots without bringing along some up-and coming-local acts, and showcasing the incredible talent that the Grand Canyon State is full of. Local acts Black Carl, Dry River Yacht Club, Black Bottom Lights, and The Black Moods are ready to bring their A-game to the True Music Festival crowds. Having a great time, enjoying time with friends, dancing and listening to music is all well and good, but it is of the utmost importance at True Music Festival to give back to the community and those in need. TMF will be teaming up with several nonprofit organizations to help spread awareness about various issues and causes. More information regarding these organizations will be available in the coming weeks. Tickets for True Music Festival are currently on sale. General Admission tickets are $70. Tickets will be available online atwww.truemusicfestival. com and at the gate, but are subject to availability. VIP packages will be available, starting at $130. Details on VIP and travel packages can also be found at www.truemusicfestival.com.

Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance and Tempe Marketplace present the inaugural Chalk Art Festival, featuring professional artists and community participation

In just one day, Tempe Marketplace will be transformed. Presented by Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance, the festival is free to attend and takes place Saturday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., throughout The District at Tempe Marketplace. “Tempe Marketplace is pleased to once again partner with Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance for another great event, the Tempe Marketplace Chalk Art Festival,” said Denise Hart Neff, vice president of marketing for Vestar. “The festival will not only showcase amazing works of art, but will also provide visitors the opportunity to help create a community

ENGAGE YOUR SENSES AT “EXPERIENCE NATIVE AMERICAN MUSIC” November 9th & 10th at MIM The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix invites the community to learn about some of Arizona’s Native American music, dance and instrumentmaking traditions during two days of family-friendly fun at “Experience Native American Music” on November 9 and 10. The weekend will also include a variety of educational presentations and a distinctive café menu. “Experience Native American Music” is the latest installment in MIM’s “Unity Through Diversity” partnership with Phoenix-based PetSmart®. The initiative brings the largest specialty pet retailer and the world’s only global musical instrument museum together to highlight musical traditions that reflect cultural diversity, while reinforcing music as a unifying element of humanity around the world. In the morning, guests will have an opportunity to hear songs and see dances by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa

Indian Community Traditional Dance Group. Guests will also be invited to join Navajo-Ute songwriter, guitarist, flute player and carver Aaron White for a flute demonstration. All performances are included with paid museum admission. Later in the afternoon, Ron Joaquin and his band will showcase the tradition of “waila” (also known as “chicken scratch”)—social dance music of the Tohono O’odham that will have you out of your seat and dancing! “Arizona is home to many diverse Native American communities. For this weekend, we will look at musical traditions of the Navajo-Ute, San Carlos Apache, Tohono O’odham and Salt River Pima-Maricopa,” said Celina Chiarello, public programs manager at MIM. “I hope MIM guests walk away with an appreciation for the unique energy of music from each of these groups.” “Experience Native American Music” will also provide educational opportunities for guests. Join San Carlos Apache artist Anthony

In addition to the Native American jewelry and instruments that the Museum Store carries year-round, there will be a selection of flutes made by Grammy-nominated artist Aaron White and Apache fiddles by Anthony Belvado, both artists featured in MIM’s galleries. The store selection also includes handmade rattles, drums, books for guests of all ages and jewelry from award-winning Navajo artists Dyanni Smith and Lena Platero. The Musical Instrument Museum is located at 4725 E. Mayo Boulevard in Phoenix (corner of Tatum and Mayo Boulevards, just south of Loop 101). For her research on “Blue Bloods,” Vanessa Ray didn’t have to go much farther than her own mother. The actress who plays Eddie Janko, the new partner of NYPD officer Jamie Reagan (Will Estes), on the Friday CBS police drama didn’t realize how helpful her mom’s devotion to the show would be until she landed the role. “When I got the job, she sat me down and gave me the lowdown,” Ray muses. “She told me who all the characters were and that Jamie had a girlfriend in the beginning, but that didn’t work out. ‘And he had a partner, but oh, the partner died. And Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and his wife (Amy Carlson) just love each other, and it’s so beautiful ... .’ She was just going on and on and on.” Fiction will merge with real life soon, since Ray plans to bring her parents to the “Blue Bloods” set the next time they visit her in New York. “My mother will be so excited! She’ll take a million pictures and put them on Facebook, then scrapbook them. It’s been sort of weird for her. She’s been like, ‘Wait. You’re going to be on my show?’ ” Though Eddie has been a “Blue Bloods” character for only a few months, she already has dealt with a lot, including almost losing her badge under suspicion of perjury after making her first solo arrest. Ray – who also will return as devious CeCe Drake on ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” – believes Eddie has “a lot to overcome. And some of those things, she’s put upon herself. We’ll hear a lot more about her past and where she came from. “She has a hard time trusting people, but she is drawn to Jamie, and she is her authentic self to him ... in a way that is alarming to her. It’s fun for us to be able to figure out the different sides of the characters, testing the waters with each other.” Birth date: June 24 (”I don’t know that I want to give the year, but other places that have gotten the date wrong have made me too old”). Birthplace: Livermore, Calif. Current residences: New York and Los Angeles Marital status: Single

hen you need a leather and copper bikini, especially one with magical powers, you just can’t pop down to the local mall. When that sort of wardrobe is needed, Alexandra Welker, costume designer of the NBC Friday fantasy “Grimm,” creates it. “TV is usually a styling job,” she says. “There is a lot of shopping and alterations. I get to design and build a lot.” “The idea is that there is a creature world that surrounds the human world,” she says. “Most of the time the human world is oblivious to this, and the main character, a homicide detective in Portland, will see people turn into things, and he learns this is a gift the family possesses. Their role as Grimms is to seek out and destroy. And as a cop, how does he fulfill the Grimm destiny at the same time as staying true to the ethical, moral policeman?

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE

‘Kill Your Darlings’

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

Daniel Radcliffe plays a young student at Columbia University who, in 1944, strikes up friendships with other young men who become the greatest beat poets of their generation. Other stars include Dane DeHaan, Ben Foster and Jack Huston. (R - 100 minutes) Stan: Reminding me of the ‘Beatnik’ poetic times of my generation and the 60s, the directorial feature film debut of John Krokidas provides a ‘time capsule’ view of my parents generation and the start of the ‘beat poets’. Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame, as Allen Ginsberg presents a very memorable portrayal full of depth and conviction.

‘Movies With a Side of Stuffing’ ‘Dallas Buyers Club’

‘Diana’

Matthew McConaughey plays a Texas electrician who, in 1986, battles the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies after being diagnosed as HIVpositive and searches for alternative treatments. (R - 117 minutes)

Naomi Watts portrays Princess Diana who, in last two years of her life, embarks on a final rite of passage - a secret love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews). (PG-13 - 113 minutes).

Stan: Matthew McConaughey, who delivered a stand-out performance in the recent film ‘Mud’, presents a character where at the onset is as thin as a rail and as the story progresses, the character’s health improves because of the familiar ‘street clinics’ as we referred to them ‘back in the day’, is worth a watch for solid story content and a another great performance.

Joseph: “Diana” is a dull-asdishwater effort that resembles a made-for-television Lifetime movie with sickeningly melodramatic dialogue and a story that, as it turns out, is really not that interesting. Naomi Watts and Naveen Andrews do give great performances, though.

‘Home For the Holidays’ – Holly Hunter and Anne Bancroftstar in a zany comedy that lightens the holiday stress. ‘Pieces of April’ – A touching and emotional drama about family dynamics and relationships.

By Randy Montgomery Halloween and Christmas… two holidays that have their fair share of movies dedicated to them. But what about Thanksgiving? It’s the holiday that is often overlooked by retailers and Hollywood alike. With the new animated comedy “Freebirds” opening this week, audiences can get their Thanksgiving fix a few weeks early and celebrate with talking turkeys.

‘Planes, Trains & Automobiles’ – This foul-mouthed classic is relatable to anyone who has tried to travel over the holidays.

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

While Thanksgiving is not a holiday that quickly comes to mind when talking holiday classics, there are a few titles out there to rent or download to hold you over until the big day comes.

‘A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving’ – An animated classic will make you want popcorn and jellybeans instead of turkey and mashed potatoes. ‘For Your Consideration’ – A hilarious comedy by Christopher Guest that will have you wanting to schedule your own Purim celebration.

Ryan Gosling was cast as Noah in ‘The Notebook’ (2004) because the director wanted someone “not handsome.”

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

COLUMNISTS

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

STAN ROBINSON

Director Oliver Hirschbiegel (‘Diana’) By Joseph J. Airdo

In this case, [Naomi] did something unusual. Usually, an actor goes from inside out. In this case, she started working on [Princess] Diana’s movements, her mannerisms, the way she looked and the way she talked. [Diana] had a very specific posh English accent and doing that

helped [Naomi] get inside of the character and really become Diana. It was fascinating for me. Very few actors have the ability to go as deep. “It may sound a little simplistic but I think love is the message here. My hope is that people get what love means, what it could mean and what it meant in [Diana’s] life; then look at their own lives and question themselves, ‘Where am I standing in life? How far would I take it? What would I give up in my life in order to live the love with another person? Would I sacrifice things that are dear to me?’

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With more than 22 years of experience in media production, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. E-mail him at Movies@StanRobinson.org.

RANDY MONTGOMERY

“As a director, you can only do so much. What you do is you find the right actor. That is 50 percent of the work, really, and I always had Naomi [Watts] down as my first name ever. Then you meet and talk about certain aspects, you look at videos together, but then you have to send the actress off and she has to do her homework. So while I am prepping my work, she does the same thing over months. We congregate frequently but most of the stuff she has to do herself.

ABOUT THE FILM

Love is just an aspect in romantic comedies and other dramas. So I would kind of like to follow this line a little for another film - not necessarily the next one but maybe the one after.” - Oliver Hirschbiegel

“I always wanted to do a love story and I thoroughly enjoyed doing this one so what I am taking with me is the want to do another one. This kind of film really is not made anymore.

‘Behind-the-Scenes’ - ‘Man of Tai Chi’

Randy Montgomery’s reactions reveal the emotional intuition of an average moviegoer. With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. E-mail him at Randyjay7694@yahoo.com.

JOSEPH J. AIRDO

By Stan Robinson ‘Man of Tai Chi’ follows the spiritual journey of a young martial artist (Tiger Chen) whose unparalleled Tai Chi skills land him in a highly lucrative underworld fight club. As the fights intensify, so does his will to survive. Keanu Reeves co-stars and directs.

Joseph J. Airdo’s remarks represent the analytical perspective. With a bachelor’s degree in media analysis and criticism from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, Joseph contemplates the real life implications and applications of a motion picture’s themes in order to determine its existential purpose. E-mail him at joseph.airdo@gmail. com.

The Chinese-martial arts genre of movies is among my foreign film favorites as they provide insight and often a mirrored view of our societal aspects of living life. This collaboration stems from stunt man Tiger Chen’sfriendship with Keanu Reeves while traininghim for the ‘Matrix’ films (1999, 2003). Tiger Chen steps from behind-the-camera to his first appearance/starring role in ‘Man of Tai Chi’, and also marks Keanu Reeves directorial debut, while presenting philosophical insight on the martial arts form of Tai Chi. (R - 105 minutes)

Mention the name Andrea Bargnani to many an NBA fan, and the terms “first overall pick” and “bust” will most likely come to mind. But perhaps the most appropriate one should be “miscast.” Indeed, when the Toronto Raptors made the 7-foot Italian power forward/center formerly known as Il Mago (“the magician”) the No. 1 overall pick in 2006, it was with the idea that he would one day soon become the Dinos’ go-to guy. But when franchise player Chris Bosh exited to Miami in 2010, that didn’t exactly happen. True, Bargnani’s numbers weren’t bad (20.8 ppg and 5.3 rpg in his last two injury-free years in Toronto of 2010-11 and 2011-12), but they weren’t exactly stats befitting a big man charged with a leadership role.

MACK NEWTON ON… A Festival of Lights Once while being interviewed for a radio program, the interviewer asked me… “In light of all the adversity you’ve faced in your life, what, if anything are you afraid of?” Without the slightest bit of hesitancy, I responded… “My only fear in life is that I won’t continue to like myself enough to keep doing the things that allow me to be successful, happy, healthy and productive.” In fact, sometimes this fear has been overwhelming, because I come from a place where not only did I not like myself very much…I hated myself. I hated myself because I had said, done and thought things that caused me to see myself as someone who wasn’t a very nice person. Needless to say, I didn’t see myself as someone who was valuable and worthwhile. So, this was a real fear…I didn’t want to go back to this dark, deep and dank place.

Seek Adventure at the Phoenix Rock Gym

Arizona’s Largest & Best Indoor Climbing Gym Since 1992

Hearing this on a live radio broadcast, several of my clients were shocked to hear these comments. They felt, like so many others that only know this side of me since 1988, that certainly I couldn’t have a problem with self-esteem or not liking myself enough. Well, as I’ve preached so many times, high levels of self-liking is the very core of the human personality, it’s a basic need. When you have high self-esteem, or high self-liking as I call it, you feel two things. The first thing is that you feel valuable and worthwhile about yourself. You feel you are a good person.

The second thing is that you feel extremely competent and capable in whatever it is you do. You have a high “I can do it!” factor. All of this boils down to retaining a high level of self-liking especially when setbacks, adversity and difficulties abound in your life. In other words, no matter what disaster may be going on in your external life, you still see yourself as a powerful, positive and effective person. Unfortunately, there aren’t many people who have reached this level of evolution where they can maintain a sense of inner value independent of external conditions. My good friend, Brian Tracy says that your own level of self-liking is much like a control valve on the quality of all your human relationships. It is the problem or the solution in every human situation. Everything you do to build and reinforce your level of self-liking increases the amount of happiness, fulfillment and success you enjoy in all areas of your life, especially your interactions with other people. But, for me, learning to say, “I like myself”, “I like myself”, over and over until it became a fundamental belief…changed my life. It changed everything…my relationships… my business…my financial life…everything!! And…I don’t ever want to go back. My message is clear and basic: learn to like yourself unconditionally… and then one has just to be oneself. No other long list of rules…just be you. You’ll be someone YOU can trust and all the burdens you’ve been carrying for all these years will just disappear. At any moment you could start, and there’s no better moment than right now. It only takes three words said a few thousand times… “I like myself” to make your life a festival of lights. -Mack Newton Mack Newton is an 8th Degree Black Belt, Senior Master Instructor, Global Tae KwonDo Federation International and Chairman of the World Technical Committee

BEER!

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

THANKSGIVING AND BEER some beers that present a crossover opportunity for the wine drinker, pull out one or two outrageous beers that will be a treat for the adventurous members of your dining group, and top

classic food beers, beers that don’t take much imagination to enjoy and pair well with a wide range of food. For these, I recommend staying on the maltier side, although you will need

Left Hand Polestar Pils A wonderful beer with plenty of carbonation to help cleanse the palate so each bite of your meal is as enjoyable as the first. Big Sky Scape Goat Pale Ale This is the beer with that little hop bite. It has a solid malt backbone to stand up to a variety of food, and has just enough hops to deal with the gravy.

Without question, one of the biggest holidays of the year for eating and drinking is Thanksgiving. Besides the obligatory list of things to be thankful for, the entire day is about eating, drinking and watching football. And it’s not just a standard meal…in some households; dozens of dishes compete with each other for space on both the table and your plate. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberries, vegetables and so much more take the stage in a dance which has the sole purpose of getting you to loosen your belt and fall asleep in front of the television in the fourth quarter of the last game of the day. Sounds like quite the challenge for somebody wanting to pour the proper beer. Fortunately, there are options that will make it easy to make sure you and your guests have the best beer to pair with your meal. And, we are giving them to you early enough to make sure you have time to pick them up. If you are a guest at one of these dinners, go ahead and bring a few bottles for your host. The first key is to not try to find one beer that is all things to all people. You probably won’t pull it off. Instead set up a sampling table somewhere in the vicinity of the dinner table and stock it with a variety of beers to suit a variety of foods. Put out small glasses if you have them and encourage guests to sample the beers in four ounce servings so they can pair multiple beers with the meal. Try some all around good food beers, add in

Next, let’s look at something for the wine drinkers. Here we will go for something with a little more complexity that still will pair with different foods:

The Bruery Autumn Maple it all of with a couple of dessert and digestif beers. Don’t be concerned if there are those in your crowd that may claim to not like beer. Have some wine available for them, personally I prefer a Pinot Noir and a Riesling with the traditional turkey dinner, but expect them to gravitate towards the beer, just because it is different. If you really want to go all out, make up index cards for each beer with a description of the flavors to be expected.

something with a little bit of hops to cut through the richer foods. So let’s go with these: New Belgium 1554 This is a darker beer based on an old Brussels recipe. It has a nice touch of sweetness to it but is easy drinking and pairs well with a large variety of food. Don’t let your guests shy away from the color of this beer. Dark is not a flavor.

How can you not include a beer that is actually made with yams? In addition to the yams, this Belgian Strong Dark Ale is brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. It will go great with dark meat, stuffing and, of course, yams. Tripel Karmeliet This Belgian Tripel brewed with barley, wheat and oats has layers of flavor

...CONTINUED FROM 44 that will match just about any food you choose to serve. The fact that it was named, “The Best Ale in the World” at the World Beer Awards certainly doesn’t hurt. Lost Abbey Red Barn I believe that saisons may be the best overall style in the world to pair with food and this offering from Lost Abbey certainly helps prove the point. It will pair with just about everything on the table and works great as an aperitif as well. For something different, try the slightly earthier Avant Garde from this brewery instead. How about challenging your guests while still giving them a strong pairing experience? Don’t worry; I have suggestions for those as well. Ballast Point Sculpin It’s a hop bomb to be sure, but still has a solid malt backbone and will work well with very rich foods, and if you serve blue cheese before or after the meal, its an incredible pairing. Gueuze (pick one, any one) Tart and refreshing, use this as a palate cleanser for a multi-course meal. It’s perfect just before the main course is served. Cantillon has been tough to find in Arizona recently so any Gueuze will do. Redstone Vanilla Bean Cinnamon Stick Mead Meads are beverages where the primary fermentable is honey. This particular one is named after the natural flavorings added. Try a Black Raspberry, Traditional Mountain Honey Wine or Juniper Mead as well. They are refreshing and a different flavor, especially good with lighter dishes. Crispin The Saint This hard apple cider fermented with Trappist Ale yeast and a hint of organic maple syrup is just right for a nontraditional Thanksgiving dinner. While it pairs well with turkey it really stands out as a complement to a ham dinner. And now for dessert, stay with rich beers the complement the flavors and the richness of the dessert:

Breckenridge Vanilla Porter, Left Hand Milk Stout All three of these beers go great with desserts and the ingredients in the dish would determine which would be best. For a lighter creamy dessert, go with the White Chocolate Ale, since it’s a wheat beer, it may not stand up to incredibly rich desserts. The Vanilla Porter is perfect with dishes like Crème Brulee or Flan. A lot of pies, especially pecan and pumpkin will go well with this. Finally, chocolate or coffee based desserts (think tiramisu or mocha) deserve Milk Stout. The unfermented sugars along with the roastiness of the stout make it ideal for this situation. Petrus Aged Red Actually any traditionally made Flemish Red or Brown will work great with fruit desserts or pies. The underlying tartness from these beers provides a nice counter-balance to the sweetness of the dessert. Lambics will also work, but try to avoid the artificially sweetened lambics out there as they tend to be a bit cloying especially with a sweet dessert.

31

North Coast Old Rasputin Pour it in a snifter and don’t worry about dessert, sit out on the patio and enjoy it. Old Stock Barleywine from North Coast is also a great stand-alone meal finisher. So those are my recommendation for Thanksgiving dinner. I realize that not all of these are available everywhere, so be creative, look for options that mirror these. No matter what you choose to drink, make sure it goes well with your food. The ability of beer to enhance the dining experience is amazing and it certainly deserves its place at your table. Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy!

By “King” James Swann Hello again beer lovers, today let’s do an old fashioned beer review. When was the last time that happened? Although rare, sometimes a beer comes along that is just so different and engaging that it just has to be written about. Today’s case in point is CRIME from Stone Brewing Co. Part a of a duo of brews with sibling PUNISHMENT, Crime begins life as the already elusive Lucky Bastard Ale then has peppers added and goes in a for a bit of aging in real America Kentucky Bourbon barrels. Can I get a Hallelujah up in here? This little gargoyle packs quite a punch! 9.5% ABV. and 102 IBUs.

BEER! SECTION

CRIME PAYS!

Big notes of fresh jalapeno and sweet barrel character abound with a hoppy balance that always seems to be right on the tip of your tongue and finished with a long lasting burn that sticks around entirely too long. Now having said so, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. No beer I have ever tasted compares in any aspect including flavour, balance or finish. Anyone out there looking for a bit of crime, or in this case punishment, should seek out both of these brews ASAP! You may be sorry you did but only for a moment as the pain subsides and for some reason you find yourself having yet another sip.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

Why God Why? Honest answer? This stuff is absolutely amazing in every way. From what’s in the bottle to the painted and corked/caged bottle itself, every aspect of this package serves as a warning to those who are not worthy. Are You? We shall see….. Until Next Week, Cheers!

SanTan Brewing Company, Arizona’s fastest growing brewery and leader of the Arizona canned craft beer revolution is gearing up to launch their RailSlide Imperial Spiced Ale on November 1, 2013. RailSlide Imperial Spiced Ale is a brew based on a traditional English Strong Ale with winter flavors including fresh ginger, cinnamon and licorice. It boasts a deep brown color and was created in celebration of the pioneering punk spirit of the American craft brewer. RailSide is an updated variation of SanTan’s 2011 winter seasonal, 12 Daze Caramel Spiced Amber that was brewed in collaboration with Joe Johnston and David Traina from Liberty Market.

Insomniacs Escape from Wonderland was held at the end of October in San Bernardino, CA. Five bone chilling stages wreaked havoc across festival goer’s ears throughout the night. Artists such as, Emma Hewitt, Carnage, and Steve Angelo made their mark in Southern California’s largest Halloween music festival. Escape featured twisted mazes, haunting theatrics, and dark themed Alice in Wonderland characters that roamed the crowd. The zombies and evil dancing clowns were a nice touch. WINE! SECTION - Sponsored By

Evening of the Artisan: Georg Riedel and Angelo Gaja By Kirstin Havice Long tables filled a room at the Gainey Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, one uniformly behind another, totaling well over 100 seats. At each place setting sat three, differently shaped wine glasses with a cup in front of each holding a particular wine. Looking from one end of the table to the other, not a glass was out of line with the next. Before everyone stood Georg Riedel, owner of Riedel Crystal, and Angelo Gaja, owner and winemaker at GAJA Winery. “I’m going to walk you through your senses,” said Riedel.

“Riedel is the emperor of glasses. He is a wine lover and connoisseur, with a true knowledge and understanding of wine,” said Gaja. “This makes all the difference.” The featured glasses were from Riedel Crystal’s Sommeliers line, the company’s first varietal-specific stemware created in 1973 by Claus J. Riedel. One was for white wine, the Montrachet, and the other two for red, the Burgundy Grand Cru and the Bordeaux Grand Cru. The accompanying wines included GAJA’s 2009 Gaia & Rey (Piedmont) matched with the Montrachet, 2010 Barbaresco (Langhe, Piedmont) paired with the Burgundy Grand Cru, and 2008 Ca’Marcanda‘Camarcanda’ (Tuscany) with the Bordeaux Grand Cru. The tasting started out with what surprised most that night—water. In each glass, it tasted different. The Bordeaux glass made it taste velvety and full, the Burgundy flat and in a regular water glass, salty. And this varied experience was the case for everything tasted.

Why did wine in one glass assault the palette while pleasing it in another? The wines did not change. They were still of the highest quality. “It’s about elevating your wine enjoyment. For that you need instruments,” explained Riedel. “You’ve probably not considered you liked the wine, but just had the wrong glass.”

www.AZWineLifestyle.com

It was the start of a Riedel Glass tasting of GAJA wines, presented by Total Wine & More. Established in 1756, Riedel Crystal craftsglasses for everything from grappa, to orchard fruit, to tequila and martinis. But this evening’s focus was wine, particularly those of Gaja. Revered as one of the greatest winemakers in Italy and in the world, Gaja is viewed as an innovator, a true artisan and revolutionary in the world of wine. This artisanry is something he sees reflected in Riedel glassware.

The Burgundy glass made the Barbaresco delightful but in the Bordeaux glass, awful. It was the other way around for the Camarcanda. The Burgundy emphasized the yeast in the wine—not so good. However, the Bordeaux emphasized the fruit, and the wine was enjoyed as it should be.

Riedel glasses are designed to affect the flow of liquid, in turn touching various taste bud areas of your tongue. The initial point of contact depends on the shape and volume of the glass, the diameter of the rim, the thickness of the crystal and whether the edge is rolled or cut and polished. For example, the edge of the Burgundy glass rolls out. This causes the tip of the tongue to curl, moving wine to the sides of the tongue and missing the center. The elements of wine-fruit, acidity, mineral components, tannin and alcohol taste best on various parts of your tongue. Essentially, the glass controls this. Towards the end of the evening, Gaja put the following words up on screen, explaining them as his philosophy for success: fare, saper fare, saper far fare, farsapere. Loosely it translates to doing something, understanding how to do something, perfecting it and then being able to teach someone. In essence, the life of the artisan. It was clear that both hosts had followed this path. That evening through wine and glassware, they talked about finding one’s passion and really learning the craft. And then sharing it, teaching it to others and enhancing a person’s experience—the true message of the evening.
