ARTS! Gamelan Çudamani: “Bamboo to Bronze” November 14-15, 2010 at Musical Instrument Museum

Enduring tradition and vibrant innovation meet in the dazzling music and dance of Bali. In the village of Pengosekan in Ubud, Bali, across the street from the temple, is a family compound that is the home to Çudamani. Comprised of a core membership of thirty-one young virtuoso musicians and dancers, Çudamani is a professional company with a working philosophy much like a family temple or sanggar. Members see themselves as a community of leaders who, through their music and dance, positively contribute to the artistic, cultural, and political life of their village. Musicians and dancers in Bali continue to practice and maintain both enduring traditions as well as vibrant creative innovations. “Bamboo to Bronze” presents the entire arch of these performing genres. Rooted in ceremony and ritual, early genres in Bali took place in both the village temples and the courts of Balinese kings. Village practices ensure deep connections to the

spirit world, while temple ceremonies are aligned to the lunar calendar, the harvest cycle, and the world of the gods and spirits. In the past, villagers may only have had bamboo gamelan instruments, while the courts perfected the high art of metallurgy, building magnificent gamelan ensembles from bronze. It is this court patronage that supported the development of dancers and musicians we now associate with Balinese Gamelan music and dance. Çudamani maintains and continues to develop repertoire that spans an enormous range of Balinese music and dance genres. “Bamboo to Bronze” considers the Balinese contemporary reality by presenting a program that includes the intimate and poetic sounds of a small village as well as the virtuosic, dynamic, and technically dazzling sound of the brilliant seventoned gamelan semarandana. Both exist alongside the increasingly complex and sophisticated world of Bali. In “Bamboo to Bronze,” the twenty-fourmember Çudamani ensemble explores its own artistic history working constantly to revive and revitalize Bali’s ancient forms in a way that acknowledges innovation as the most powerful tool of preservation. Call 480-478-6000 for tickets or visit www.themim.org for more information. For more information on Çudamani, visit www.cudamani.org. Nick@ Night By Nick Connell There’s more great shows opening every weekend as the Fall Arts season is unfolding. From music to Shakespeare, ballet and more. Here is a sampling of the great performances all around the valley. Grab a ticket to your favorite show and Enjoy! A MIDSUMMERS NIGHT DREAM Ballet Arizona at Symphony Hall in Phoenix Ballet Arizona opened its 25th Anniversary season with a spectacular and colorful production of IB Anderson’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream! No wonder critics from as far away as New York are raving about IB, Ballet Arizona, and his talented group of dancers. With his creative music and production team, the productions are pure gold! But this production of the classic Shakespeare play was a magical dream to behold! From flowing movements and colorful characters, wrapped with music from the Phoenix Symphony and the ASU women’s chorus, this production was fairy dust from heaven! Every scene was an opportunity to experience the genius and creativity of IB and his talented dancers and characters. Kudos also to Conductors Timothy Russell and Charissa Chiaravalloti, Lighting Designer Michael Korsh, and the set and costume designers from Orlando Ballet. Their creative touches were the icing on the cake of this wedding bliss! ROMEO AND JULIET ATC Presents The Acting Company/Guthrie Theater At The Herberger Center There was another excellent production of Shakespeare in town this past week as Arizona Theatre Company presented an Acting Company/Guthrie Theater production of Romeo and Juliet. This was a production even the Royal Shakespeare Company would rave about! This renowned Guthrie Theater production with the Acting Company was brought forward a few hundred years to reach out to a new generation of theatre-goers to revive and renew the revelation and dangers of love, passion, and the hate between families that cause misfortune and war. Director Penny Metropulos’ interpretation of the classic yet fatal love story is fresh and accessible. Her actors were also up to task with touching performances and dramatic intentions throughout the two hour production. Her Romeo and Juliet (Alejandro Rodriquez and Kaliswa Brewster) were wonderful to watch and well supported by a cast of characters expressing the Bards wisdom in full color! I hope this will become a tradition at ATC to partner with the Guthrie Theater every season - it was a splendid gift to the community! LAKOTA SIOUX INDIAN DANCE THEATRE at MIM (Musical Instrument Museum) Another dynamic and dramatic performance unfolded last week at the MIM as the Lakota Sioux Indian Dance Theatre danced into town with drums and flutes in hand. Cokata Upo!, or Come to the Center, directed by Henry Smith, follows the creation story and cosmology of the Lakota nation which now resides in the United States and Canada. With Prayer Songs and Dance numbers accompanied by singers and drummers, this small group of dancers evolved through A Birth of a Nation and then another Death and Rebirth with colorful and energetic dance expressions. This rich and beautiful culture was represented very well through a variety of drum songs, flute melodies and dances expressing the culture which reveres the Buffalo and Eagle Nations. I hope there will be future performances from our relations in the Native American community. Their wisdom, music and art are worth experiencing. BREAK A LEG!

The fact that the rate technology is advancing at an exponentially astounding rate is a factor I’m quite comfortable with. A frequent comment by my children, who have children of their own now, is ‘You’re not like a lot of the ‘old school thinking’ people!’ I can truthfully thank the motion picture industry where I worked for 22 years before officially retiring in 2008 for my ‘forward thinking’ mindset. If one has a concept for a film, with the time frame to conceive, produce, and finally get it to the screen, it could be years. So, one has to think ahead.

Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Glendale filmmaker Tyler Timberlin will be premiering his new movie “Love(less)” 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17 at Pollack Tempe Cinemas. Ryan Lynch and Karita Fleming star in the Sandy Wasserman-produced project, which was filmed here in the Valley using local talent. Visit www. friarslantern.net/id98.html. Be among the first to get the latest scoop from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com.

‘Welcome to the Rileys’ Moving ‘slice of life’ from director Jake Scott Interview by Stan Robinson The Rileys are Doug and Lois (James Gandolfini & Melissa Leo), whose life together has a hollow emptiness since their daughter Emily was killed eight years ago… I call the style of presentation that director Jake Scott uses to tell his story ‘slice of life’ films where one drifts into the story ‘in progress’, stays for a while and drifts back out again. We get insight into Doug and Lois along with the ‘burden of pain’ each of them is carrying, and the influence of 16 years old lapdancer Mallory (Kristen Stewart) has on the Rileys. Always refreshing to have the opportunity to chat with the director, a planned conversation for the usual time limit with Jake Scott, turned into almost an hour! Be sure to visit www. ScreenScene.org for the full conversation!

12

This type of project for Jake is a departure from his background of directing music related projects like ‘U2: 1990-2000’ (2002) documentary! I asked Jake did ‘Welcome to the Rileys’ find him or did he seek it out to bring to the screen… Jake: I think it sort of found me, I’m coming from the music video and commercial background really, so I was looking for something sort of different to that, I really, really wanted to find a project or story that was more character

and less plot driven, more detailed in terms of character development. I was working a the time, this was about four or five years ago I think, I was working on a project for DreamWorks which was similarly a smaller project but leaning more towards comedy which is very character driven, this story is truly character driven which very nice! Stan: You just reminded me of a favorite saying my film production instructor constantly reminded us of, ‘If it’s not on the page, it won’t be on the screen’! Jake: This is very, very true and I really believe that! There are some very skilled and experienced directors who are able to at times, transcend that but a general rule I think that’s very true and I learned that the hard way (with a chuckle!) because I made a film about ten to twelve years ago that wasn’t on the page and the essence was never on the screen and I learned that practically and that kind of drove me towards something that was maybe less ambitious visually and reduce it to an acting piece that I could than focus a creative energy that I’m more familiar with. And as a lover of cinema, I’m a lot like you, a complete film nut, l love cinema and watch a lot and have a fairly extensive education in it. The climate being what it is and thought trends in modern cinema, it’s difficult to make films like ‘Welcome to the Rileys’! I was lucky because Michael Costigan came in few years ago to run Scott Free (Productions) and by me thinking that it would be nice to do something smaller, sort of like an independent style films. It suited me and he happened to have this script for the Rileys and he brought it with him when he came to the company! We were having coffee one morning and I was grumbling about this other project I was trying to get going, and he said I’ve got this script, why don’t you read it, see what you think. I read it that day, and said I really like this character Doug Riley…

the son of producer/director Ridley Scott (‘Robin Hood’ 2010)’, ‘American Gangster’ (2007) ‘Gladiator’ (2002), and the nephew of producer/ director Tony Scott who’s latest is ‘Unstoppable’ opening this weekend starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine! Reviewers’ Roundup: ‘Cool It’ Based on the book of the same name and lectures by Bjorn Lomborg, “Cool It” explores the real facts and true science of global warming and its impact. Amidst the strong and polarized opinions, the documentary follows Lomborg on his mission to bring the smartest solutions to climate change, environmental pollution and other major problems in the world. (PG – 88 minutes) The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly’s Film! contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Read Stan Robinson’s and Joseph J. Airdo’s full reviews exclusively online. Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “After a few moments in, ‘Cool It’ settles right to the style of ‘point – counterpoint’ without taking sides, merely stating the common thoughts of solving global warming from past/ current efforts, and practical easily implemented fresh ideas based on current results, with an astounding conclusion: It wouldn’t cost anymore than what’s already earmarked, merely redirecting priorities! It’s one heck of a documentary!” Grade: B+ Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com): “‘Cool It’s is one of the rare documentaries that perfects the balance between education and entertainment. Lomborg and director Ondi Timoner have developed one of the most thought-provoking and persuasive pieces of cinema to hit the big screen this year, applying logic and reason to the global warming discussion.” Grade: B

There’s so much more to this interesting conversation on pulling ‘Welcome to the Rileys’ together, shooting it, and finally to the big screen at www.ScreenScene.org And, just in case you didn’t know, Jake Scott is

Stan Robinson’s ‘Capsule Reviews!’ ‘Unstoppable’ High-octane suspense thriller! A railway company has its hands full as an unmanned runaway train, a half-mile-long and carrying highly combustible liquids and poisonous gas, in short ‘a deadly moving bomb’, is headed straight towards a populated City! With the cast of Denzel Washington as the engineer, Chris Pine as his conductor, Rosario Dawson as the supervisor back at master control, and the visual expertise of director Tony Scott with Denzel Washington as one of Tony Scott’s favorite actors with ‘The Taking of Pelha 1 2 3’ (2009), ‘Deja Vu’ (2006), and ‘Man on Fire’ (2004) as previous projects, this is ‘One heck of a ride!’ 4 of 5 stars

‘Welcome to the Rileys’ a journey of closure… The Rileys are Doug and Lois (James Gandolfini & Melissa Leo), whose life together has a hollow emptiness since their daughter Emily was killed eight years ago… After their loss, the Rileys have become distant to each other, with both not truly speaking or sharing, the inner thoughts they each are harboring. On a business trip to New Orleans, Doug seeks salvation by caring for a wayward young woman, and Lois feels an ultieriour motive might be the catalyst for what she believes is misplaced guilt. Director Jake Scotts’ style of intuitive character development provides ‘soul searching’ moments in this ‘slice of life’ film! 3 ½ of 5 stars

‘Monsters’ ~ Extraterrestrials among us for quite some time… The theme set by 2009’s ‘District 9’ is revisited. Six years after a probe sent to collect alien life samples crashed upon reentry in Central America, half of Mexico was quaran-

Although one may label this a ‘B’ lowbudget sci-fi movie, the contrasting personalities of the central characters provides enough interest to see it through, including a view of the complete ‘Monsters’ we only see glimpses of throughout the story! Starring Whitney Able and Scoot McNairy. 3 of 5 stars * The full reviews for movies are available at www.ScreenScene.org

Now Playing! ‘Skyline’ By Joseph J. Airdo In “Skyline,” Eric Balfour plays Jarrod, a fellow who takes a trip to Southern California for a fun getaway. However, when a cluster of strange, mesmerizing lights signals the arrival of a malevolent alien invasion and thousands of terrified citizens are pulled into giant UFOs, Jarrod and his friends must use every skill they have to survive global genocide. (PG-13 – 94 minutes) Read Joseph J. Airdo’s review of “Skyline” exclusively online at Examiner.com.

‘Morning Glory’ By Stan Robinson A sharp and upwardly mobile television producer (Rachel McAdams) is given the challenging assignment of bringing new life to a struggling morning show program. Her biggest obstacle: the constant feuding of its high-profile anchors (Harrison Ford & Diane Keaton)! (PG-13-102 minutes)

Director Edgar Wright talks ‘Scott Pilgrim’ By Joseph J. Airdo Director Edgar Wright’s biggest technical challenge while making “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” which will be released Tuesday on Blu-ray and DVD, was using all of the real actors in the film’s many fight scenes. “Unlike a superhero film where people are wearing masks, nobody really wears any masks in this film,” Wright explains. “So, it made the execution of the fight scenes like overly ambitious because you actually see the actors in the fight frequently. And so they all trained for a very long time and it made those scenes incredibly meticulous and pain-staking.” In “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” Michael Cera portrays a young man who discovers that the girl of his dreams (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has quite the unusual baggage - a nefarious league of seven evil exes who will stop at nothing to eliminate him as a suitor. Australian filmmaker Brett Anstey talks ‘Damned by Dawn’ By Joseph J. Airdo Brett Anstey, writer and director of “Damned by Dawn,” which is now available on DVD, set out to make a traditional banshee movie that would pay homage to the Hammer horror films of yesteryear. However, the filmmaker’s location proved to be something of challenge - especially given his near non-existent production budget.

“Living in Australia, where we shot the film, it didn’t really lend itself to making a creepy, supernatural fogshrouded horror film,” Anstey says. “There are lots of blue skies and gum trees. It looks nothing like what you would expect a heavily influenced Irish horror film would look like.” Read Joseph J. Released theatrically August 13 of this year, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” debuted in fifth-place and went on to earn a meager $31.5 million at the domestic box office – barely half of its estimated production budget – before completely disappearing from multiplexes. Needless to say, much of the buzz surrounding the film focused on its disappointing financial performance. Fortunately, the Internet exploded with positive comments from moviegoers who had seen “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” several times over during its extremely brief theatrical run. One Seattle resident boasts about having seen the movie 31 times. Wright notes that many fans have actually become “evangelists” for the flick. “It’s nice to hear the fans’ response to just the material, really,” says Wright, adding that he is no stranger

“Sin City” (2005): It’s tough-guy time yet again for Willis, playing a down-and-out policeman trying to protect a stripper (Jessica Alba). “The Whole Nine Yards” (2000): Spoofing his rugged image, Willis is amusing as a hit man whose stay in the suburbs isn’t as quiet as hoped. “The Sixth Sense” (1999): An understated Willis is as fine as he’s ever been as a tormented psychologist advising a boy (Haley Joel Osment) who sees dead people. “Armageddon” (1998): Willis is typically tough, and good, as an oil driller who leads his team into outer space to destroy an asteroid.

It’s been many years since Sherri Shepherd and her grandmother watched Bob Eubanks hosting the original version of “The Newlywed Game,” but she says when it comes to the current Game Show Network version of the show, the more things change, the more they have stayed the same. “What’s so great about GSN is that they haven’t changed the format,” says Shepherd, who recently started hosting the weekday show. “When you have favorites like this one, you don’t want to see it all changed up. “I still ask them about ‘making whoopee.’ Sometimes we get more adult answers to the questions now than they used to, but it’s still probably OK for kids to watch, as long as they don’t understand the innuendoes.” Even though more couples today live together before marriage than they used to, that doesn’t mean these newlyweds know each other any better. “We will have couples who have just gotten married, but they have lived together for years, and they even have kids, but they still are just as clueless,” she says, laughing. “When a couple gets something wrong, and I don’t interject anything and just let them argue, they’ll go, ‘Oh, my God, I can’t believe you said that about my mother. I had no idea you felt that way!’ ” GSN relocated the show to New York to accommodate Shepherd, who also juggles parenting a preschooler with daily appearances on ABC’s “The View” and a recurring role on NBC’s “30 Rock.” “I consider myself blessed in this day and time to be doing something I have dreamed about since I was a little girl, so it doesn’t even really seem like work,” she says. “I never let anything interfere with my son. I get home in time to read him a story, and then we go to bed.” Born: April 22, 1967, in Chicago Family ties: She’s the oldest of three sisters. Her father, now retired, was a restaurant food services manager; her late mother cleaned homes for a living.

Bluestonehenge, a prehistoric stone circle monument found about a mile from Stonehenge, is the site of a dig where researchers hope to find archaeological evidence that will shed new light on how prehistoric people managed to quarry, transport, sculpt and then erect these massive stones without the benefit of any monster trucks or other high-tech equipment in the new episode “Secrets of Stonehenge.”

The eight-episode documentary “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” premieres Sunday on TLC

When GOP presidential candidate Sen. John McCain tapped Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008, she catapulted to instant worldwide fame. The press spotlight put on Palin and her family also spilled over onto her home state, known to many people in the “Lower 48” – as Alaskans call the rest of the continental U.S. – as the setting of “Northern Exposure” and as a favorite cruise and outdoor adventure destination. But with a little help from such shows as Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” and History’s “Ice Road Truckers,” TV viewers have come to see more of the working life of the vast state known as the Last Frontier, from crab fishing in the Bering Sea to heavy hauling in support of oil drilling.

Even with this, there’s a lot more Alaska yet to be seen. On Sunday, Nov. 14, TLC premieres the eight-episode documentary series “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” executive produced by Mark Burnett (“Eco-Challenge,” “Survivor,” “Shark Tank”), which follows the now-former governor of Alaska and her family and friends as they embark on an odyssey through the state’s land, wildlife and industries. “It was physically challenging,” Palin says. “Most every episode has elements of danger. (My husband) Todd and I, and our kids, we’ve grown up doing the things that you’re going to see on the show – hiking and hunting and climbing and rafting, commercial fishing. “All these things are highlighted in the show, when it comes to showing the uniqueness of the livelihoods that are made in Alaska, carved out of a wilderness, made on the water. “We’ve done all of those things all our lives, so it was natural to us. But at the same time, physically, there were a lot of challenges involved in showcasing what those livelihoods are.” Palin doesn’t just narrate beauty shots in the episodes. She participates, whether it’s salmon fishing in bear country or on Bristol Bay, halibut fishing near Homer, talking about the state’s rich stores of oil and natural gas (a favorite topic of Palin’s, both as governor and as a vice presidential candidate), or heading north of the Arctic Circle on a caribou hunt. “We eat,” she says, “therefore we hunt.” As for the most difficult thing she did for the show, Palin says, “Mine would have been climbing the chunk of ice and rock on Mount McKinley, because I’m deathly afraid of heights. I didn’t think that I’d be able to do what it was that we set out to do. “Once we arrived on the glacier, looking up at the summit we would have to try to conquer, it looked impossible. I had to mentally and physically challenge myself more than I have in many, many years. It was probably the toughest episode. “I was glad that I was in shape. It’s inherent up there that you’re outdoors, you’re active. We don’t waste a lot of time just sitting around.”

“AVATAR: EXTENDED COLLECTOR’S EDITION”

One of the most enduring of all holiday stories gets a fresh screen workout from Disney, director Robert Zemeckis and Jim Carrey in this inventive retelling. Carrey expectedly plays legendary miser Ebenezer Scrooge, but thanks to the “motion capture” technique Zemeckis also used on “The Polar Express,” the actor takes on several other characters of the Charles Dickens classic as well. Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Robin Wright and Bob Hoskins also lend their images and voices to the project. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray)

The most successful movie of all time gets a home-video relaunch in a version sure to satisfy any fan, since it includes director James Cameron’s original edition and the recent theatrical rerelease that added eight minutes ... plus an extended cut that attaches another 16 minutes. Sam Worthington plays the story’s hero, a paraplegic Marine who gets to participate in the planned elimination – then potential salvation – of an alien race through his avatar alter ego. ›››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “THE LAST AIRBENDER” The animated series that was a popular attraction on Nickelodeon gets elaborate live-action treatment from director M. Night Shyamalan (“The Sixth Sense”), but some fans of the franchise still might appreciate the original version more. Noah Ringer plays a youth with the special ability to control each of the world’s elements – fire, wind, water and yes, air – positioning him to prevent an implosion when those who can handle only one element each are at odds. Dev Patel (“Slumdog Millionaire”) and Jackson Rathbone (“Twilight”) also star. ›› (PG: V) (Also on Blu-ray)

“THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT” Julianne Moore and Annette Bening have been mentioned as likely Oscar contenders for their fine work in this smart comedy-drama from director and cowriter Lisa Cholodenko (“High Art”). The stars play longtime partners whose children (Mia Wasikowska, the screen’s most recent “Alice in Wonderland,” and Josh Hutcherson) are intent on finding the sperm donor who is their father (Mark Ruffalo). When they locate him and unite everyone, the result is mixed emotions.››› (R: AS, N, P) (Also on Blu-ray)

“CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE” Coming almost a decade after the original “Cats & Dogs” animated feature, this spy spoof turns canines and felines into reluctant partners in trying to stop a renegade cat (who has the voice of Bette Midler) from taking control of the world. Nick Nolte, Midler’s earlier co-star in “Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” also is in the voice cast; so are Chris O’Donnell, Jack McBrayer (“30 Rock”) and Fred Armisen (“Saturday Night Live”). ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray)

BEER! SECTION

BEER! That time of year is rolling around. Have you noticed the winter beers starting to show up on the shelves yet? I know we have. I am sitting in a conference room on Sunday morning sipping on a beer-mosa of Breckenridge Agave Wheat and orange juice listening to Erik Boles from BeerTap TV talk about blogging and how to do a better job. This weekend was the Beer Bloggers Conference in Boulder and it has been entertaining, informative, and oh yeah, there was a little beer involved. We had a chance to sample some great beers when everybody brought their favorite bottles for a icebreaker event on Friday night. There were beers available from New Glarus, Cigar City and many more. Don Feinberg and Wendy Littlefield from Vanberg and Dewulf were on hand to pour Saison Dupont and Scaldis and they brought a couple of beers that were new to the country. The highlight of the evening was the opening of The End Of History. You may recall a few weeks ago, we talked about the arms race for high ABV beers. This beer, from Brewdog, is the current reigning champion coming in at 55% ABV. Only twelve bottles of this beer were produced and one media outlet was selected to receive

26

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

one of these bottles for review. This bottle went to BeerTap TV and they decided to run a contest to select one fortunate attendee at the conference to sample the beer with them while recording their program. The winner was Tamre Mullins, founder of Girls Pint Out in Indianapolis. Being in the right place at the right time served me well as Tamre offered samples of her sample to a few people. I have to admit it was pretty cool to get an opportunity to taste one of the rarest beers in the world. For the record, the beer tasted okay, of course a lot of alcohol flavor came through but it definitely had beer-like qualities. It was hard to top that moment, but suffice to say we managed to do so.

Lost Coast Winterbraun is available on shelves. This year the beer has been tweaked a little bit to provide a slightly different beer. Initial reviews is that the change makes for an even better drinking experience than previous years. Avery’s Old Jubilation is made it out early this year. This popular beer is always a big seller and should sell out quickly. Avery makes a lot of occasional release beers as well, so look for some Dugana later this

month. K-9 Cruiser from Flying Dog is another old favorite and it’s on the shelves as well as on taps throughout the valley. The first beer to show up in Phoenix this year was Breckenridge Christmas Ale. It was a nice surprise to see this beer available already. This is rich and full bodied with great flavor coming from the Mt. Hood and Chinook hops. SKA Euphoria returns for a second year, and after last year’s successful release of cans,

Enough about my weekend, the real topic of this week’s article is the discussion of this year’s winter beers. So let’s get into that. What is great about winter beer is that it is probably the most prevalent of the seasonal beers. The beers are designed for the winter season and have a lot of richness and body. With several holidays that involve big meals, these winter seasonals typically go well with the traditional holiday foods. The one downside is that everybody assumes that these beers somehow go bad the day after New Years. This is not true, the higher ABV of these products allow them to have a longer shelf life, and many of them are able to be cellared for several years. Winter lasts well past January 1 and these great beers should be considered at least through February. The usual characteristic of these beers, besides higher ABV, is that they tend to have very deep coloring ranging from copper to thick black. Sometimes the flavors are created entirely from the malt and hops, and with others, seasonal spices are added. These can include nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, coriander and more. What is out on the shelves already?

the brewers at SKA sent some kegs as well. New Belgium Two Below, Alaskan Winter Ale, Powderhound from Big Sky, Santa’s Little Helper from Port Brewing and Lost Abbey’s Gift of the Magi round out the list of currently available winter seasonals. Within the next couple of weeks, expect to see a bunch more beer arriving. Look for Anderson Valley Winter Solstice (always one of the most popular in Arizona), Thunder Canyon Ornament Ale, Great Divide Hibernation, Left Hand Fade to Black, He’Brew Jewbelation, Abita Christmas, Bell’s Christmas and Fox Barrel Mulled Cider. The latter two are new to the market and are expected to be very popular. The imports will also be well represented. Expect to see Ridgeway’s Bad Elf lineup. Non new elves this year, but the old ones should be enough. Mahr’s Christmas Bock will be back, as will Noel de Geants. Mikkeller’s To/From will be on the shelves along with two new offerings from this highly demanded Danish brewer. Ris a la M’ale is based on the Danish dessert called risalamande. The beer is made with the same ingredients as the dessert and includes rice, vanilla, cream, cherries and almond extract. The other beer is called Red/White and it is a blend of a British style red ale and a Belgian Witbier. Jolly Pumpkin’s Noel de Calabaza will be in the market, and for the first time ever, this small brewery in Michigan will be sending kegs to the market. Look for

these and plenty more imports on the shelves soon. So much for the 2010 winter beer update. Make sure you get out there and try these beers sooner rather than later since they are usually in very limited supply and go fast. Pick up a few bottles to serve with Thanksgiving dinner and a few more for Christmas, Chanukah or any other winter holiday you celebrate. And, of course, you will want to have some of these on hand for New Year’s Eve as well. Next week, we will get more specific about Thanksgiving beer and food pairings so you have plenty of time to stock up.

Cider: Who Knew?

There is something new afoot in the world of cider. You know, cider, that stuff that the people who don’t like beer drink when you drag them to a pub. That stuff that is made with “apples” and has artificial sweetener added so that it coats your mouth with a sweet residue. No offense meant to those of you who truly enjoy apple juice spiked with grain alcohol. But a new company is crafting their way to some amazing and innovative ciders. Crispin Cider produces naturally fermented ciders that are crafted from apples trucked in from orchards in the northwest. From their Classic Blue Line they offer a Classic, Light and a Brut. Each offers a bright, clean apple flavor with an emphasis on a dry finish. Specifically the Brut has a quality similar to Brut champagne. Also available is an Artisanal Line including Honey Crisp and The Saint. The Honey Crisp has a touch of organic honey which rounds out the fruit forward flavor. The Saint is a treat, fermented with Belgian Trappist beer yeasts it has a earthy, funky quality like none other. And amazingly there is more to this than straight cider. Blending craft beer with cider opens a whole new realm of tastes. Next time you reach for a black and tan try floating that stout with cider. You won’t regret it. The Nationwide Series title is all but wrapped up, save for a victory lap or 200 by Brad Keselowski in Homestead, Fla., on Saturday, Nov. 20. So after driving presumably all of those 200 laps around Homestead-Miami Speedway to complete the Ford 300, Keselowski will celebrate his first series championship and the first in NASCAR for legendary team owner Roger Penske. Even if Keselowski isn’t able to finish the race – not likely; last season he was the only Nationwide driver to start and finish all 35 races – his stranglehold on the standings is such that he should still win the title. The 26-year-old fan favorite essentially took the checkered flag on the Nationwide title a month ago when he won his sixth race of the season, beating, among others, archrival Carl Edwards at Gateway International Raceway in suburban St. Louis. The win not only built Keselowski a nearinsurmountable first-place cushion of 485 points over Edwards but it also amounted to revenge of sorts, since Edwards had wrecked the frontrunning Keselowski on the final lap to win a Nationwide race at Gateway in mid-July.

While the Heat made all the offseason headlines by bringing in LeBron James and Chris Bosh to play with Dwyane Wade, the defending Eastern Conference champion Celts, with Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, are out to prove they’re still the East’s top dogs. In the late game, the Los Angeles Lakers visit the Denver Nuggets.

It is a movement to celebrate the creative side of everyone and literally there are no rules! There will even be performances throughout the night. One you have to see is Flam Chen, an acrobatic and theatrical troupe whose shows involve whimsical costumes, daring stunts, acrobatic wonders with everything from stilts to fire. Think Cirque du Soleil. Then there is the Strange Family Circus performing vaudeville style performances, and comedic quirky attractions. The Bad Cactus Brass Band will also be there playing up-beat jazz, dixieland, pop and whatever keeps the parade alive. Dj Entrificatio will be spinning tracks to keep you moving and get you dancing. This is a celebration not to be missed! Express yourself and get a high off of doing so and being among everyone’s creative vibes. www. phoenixannualparadeofthearts.com

THE BEST TEQUILA BARS! Sponsored by Cruz Tequila

TEN TEQUILA TRUTHS TO LIVE BY TEQUILA TRUTHS TO LIVE BY Never buy tequila that you’ve seen advertised over and over again. So many companies spend way too much cash on TV ads and billboards featuring topless girls holding tequila bottles. Don’t forget what really matters – the quality. Check labels for “100 percent Agave”. Tequila is made from an Agave plant – a tree generally found in the mountains in the Tequila region of Mexico. It’s pretty safe to suggest that if the label doesn’t say that it’s made from this plant, then it’s more than likely not real tequila.

Join us for our

PREMIER MARGARITA MENU

Historically, salt and lemons were not used in the shot tradition. Previously, sugar was used instead of salt… and oranges rather than lemons for sucking. Tequila can be used in cooking. Try your hand at whipping up beef and tequila stew, margarita steaks, tequila fried shrimp or a tequila salsa.

Featuring…

40 Fine Tequilas!

The first bottles of tequila were exported out of Mexico to other parts of the world including America and Europe in 1876 by what is now one of the hugest tequila companies, Jose Cuervo. Arianne Zucker stars as Nicole Kiriakis on “Days of Our Lives,” weekdays on NBC.

ALL MY CHILDREN Asher told Caleb he’d rather have JR use him than ignore him, and he vowed to make Caleb’s life hell. Ryan agreed to let Greenlee come with him to find Pearson, but Liza warned Jackson there could be trouble if Greenlee wasn’t in court for the verdict. Erica offered her plane to Greenlee and Ryan, who admitted their love for each other and shared a passionate kiss while on the run. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Everyone at the Forrester men’s line preview was stunned by Thomas and Brooke’s publicity stunt. Brooke tried to reach Ridge to explain, but Stephanie wouldn’t let her see him. Hope apologized to Thomas for stealing his spotlight but reprimanded him for causing trouble between Ridge and Brooke. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Nicole found Arianna’s camera and saw Sami’s confession to shooting EJ. She brought it to Sami and told her she would keep quiet if Sami would let Sydney back in her life. The women fought, and Nicole was knocked out. Rafe revived her, listened to her story and agreed to let her see Sydney. While Nicole was bonding with Sydney, Rafe infected her computer with a virus to corrupt the video of Sami’s confession. GENERAL HOSPITAL The Balkan’s henchmen appeared to exchange Siobhan for Brenda. Jason and Dante took down all six of them as Lucky untied Siobhan. Patrick comforted Robin after the fire but revealed she’d contracted a dangerous infection. Brenda told Jason the truth. Ethan blew Luke’s cover about the faked heart attack, but Luke persuaded Tracy to go to Vegas with him and get married.

Vicky Putney is the sort of polished woman who would just as soon cut off a limb as wear a ratty T-shirt and sweatpants. And for that, Debra Jo Rupp, who plays her on ABC’s “Better With You,” airing Wednesdays, is grateful. “Oh, my God, I am in heaven!” Rupp says, adding she finally wants to borrow clothes from her character’s wardrobe, after eight seasons on “That ’70s Show.” “I think it is the first time. I could never wear any of Kitty’s clothes. “Who would want to?” she continues. “For eight years, people were going, ‘You look really good!’ I fell for it. I could see with my very own eyes, but I totally fell for it. Now they tell me, ‘You don’t look so dumpy and matronly.’ ” If that weren’t bad enough, most of the polyester that was the glory of “That ’70s Show” “was from this warehouse in Iowa, and it smelled,” Rupp says. Now, she is what costume designer Lori Eskowitz-Carter calls “a fancy lady,” comparing her to Karen on “Will & Grace,” where Eskowitz-Carter was the costume designer. Vicky’s sophisticated look is based on suits from Nordstrom and Saks. The black suit is a Tahari petite and the navy suit a St. John, beaded with Swarovski crystals. Debra Jo Rupp

ONE LIFE TO LIVE Kelly admitted she had a crush on Rex, who revealed that he and Gigi hadn’t had sex in a long time. Cristian and Layla were reunited in Paris, while Gigi spent time with Adriana, goading her about her lack of a sex life. Layla opted to go to Milan with Adriana rather than spend the weekend in Paris with Cris, who ended up kissing Gigi, while back home, Rex and Kelly kissed.
