Mark Chesnutt debuted his first No. 1 single “Too Cold at Home” in 1990. Since then, he has charted more than 30 singles on Billboard Magazine’s Hot Country Songs, including eight No. 1 singles. Winner of the Country Music Association’s Horizon Award, Chesnutt’s chart-toppers include “It Sure Is Monday,” “Gonna Get a Life” and “Goin’ Through the Big D.” With four platinum albums in the 1990s, Chesnutt went on to score five more Top Ten hits: the number one “Brother Jukebox,” “Blame It on Texas,” “Bubba Shot the Jukebox,” “Ol’ Country,” and one his signature songs, “Old Flames Have New Names.” Born in Beaumont, Texas, Chesnutt dropped out of school after his sophomore year of high school to begin playing in clubs around southeast Texas. When he turned 17, he made his way to Nashville, Tennessee to begin a recording career. Over the next ten years, Chesnutt gathered a large fan base playing in honkytonks before he became one of the main voices of the new country music generation. Today, Chesnutt maintains a busy tour schedule year after year. Remaining true to himself as a traditional artist, while keeping the pace with the everchanging music landscape, Mark Chesnutt continues to release singles with authentic country style.

Matt Smith

Of “DOCTOr WhO” ON BBC AMeRICA On Saturday, Nov. 23, BBC America (and the BBC in the U.K.) air the 50th anniversary special of “Doctor Who,” called “The Day of the Doctor.” It represents one of your last appearances as the 11th incarnation of the time-traveling alien (the last being the upcoming Christmas special). Do you have regrets?

About leaving? Not regrets, but it’s not easy. It’s a hard decision. I have great friends on the show; it’s a wonderful character; it’s thrilling to make; it’s changed my life. Of course, it’s not an easy thing to leave. And, it’s really successful. It’s nice to be in something that’s really successful. It won’t always be the case. It’s hard, but it’s perhaps the right time for me and the show, I think.

Host Jeff Probst presides as castaway contestants attempt to outwit and outlast one another in “Survivor” Wednesdays on CBS.

Jane Lynch stars as scheming cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester in “Glee” Thursdays on Fox.

Is the way the 11th Doctor is now similar to how you envisioned him at the beginning?

He’s evolved. I Off hope he’s evolved. But fundamentally, I thinkWe’ll about him in quite a Drop Your Stuff, Sell It On eBay®, You Get A Check. similar way. My instincts were probably the right ones. Sometimes I think I should go back to them a bit more.

Simply drop off any item you’d like to sell on eBay®, and we’ll do the rest! Do you know where you’re filming the Christmas special? (This interview took place in late July.)

Probably in Wales. I’ve pushed for America. Miami would be fun. The Doctor goes to Professional Packing & Shipping Miami; that would be great, like ’50s Miami• or something. That’d be great, wouldn’t • Professional Photography it? I think there’s also a great story on the Mississippi River, Digital like Huck Finn, with aliens. Checking in with Megan Boone Life on “The Blacklist” is good, if you ask Megan Boone. And how could it not be? NBC’s Monday crime drama is one of the season’s new hits, with strong ratings (including those from post-broadcast DVR viewings, where the show has set a couple of records) and positive reviews ... and a breakout star in Boone as novice FBI profiler Elizabeth Keen, who’s drawing interest and information from enigmatic ex-fugitive Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader). “I was so elated,” Boone recalls of learning she’d be teamed with Spader, since she was cast for “The Blacklist” first. “He often believes in me more than I believe in myself. I’m expected to carry the show with him, and at first, that was really a daunting task. “James helped me to know that I could put that energy into the work that we do together. And in doing so, he established a

partnership with me that runs really deep and is very trusting.” In her previous roles on crime shows, Boone says she “felt like a female placeholder who gave expositional dialogue about the case, and didn’t really have any relationships with the people in the show. There was just no heart in the characters. “Then a couple of years go by and you forget, and you take a job where you do that again, and it reminds you. It stings to go against your own intuition about things.” Still, the process led Boone to “The Blacklist,” especially with the development of her “real sense of who I was. I sort of swung the pendulum back and realized I was only going to pursue things I was passionate about. Literally within two weeks, ‘The Blacklist’ came across the table, and I fell in love with it. “It’s funny,” Boone concludes, “how once you make that decision, how quickly life can throw you what you need.”

fabrics. Maybe if you have a degree from Parsons or the Fashion Institute of Technology, those instructions make sense. And maybe looks can be created cheaper and easier. Sometimes, however, the joy in a character is that it can’t be copied easily. Witness Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope on ABC’s “Scandal.” “People keep wanting us to do looks for less,” says costume designer Lyn Paolo. “I think it is unfair to our gladiator. Olivia Pope is Olivia Pope.” Paolo had a vision for Pope before she knew Washington was cast. “I talked about the essence of femininity,” Paolo says of meeting with show creator Shonda Rhimes. “And I didn’t want to do another woman in a gray suit or a boring suit, and I wanted this to be elegant femininity.”

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE

ABOUT THE FILM

COLUMNISTS STAN ROBINSON

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘The Motel Life’

‘Angels Sing’

‘The Book Thief’

Harry Connick, Jr. plays a man who, having had his holiday spirit permanently crushed as a result of a tragic accident during his childhood, meets a mysterious man (Willie Nelson) who gives him a gift and instills in him the courage to find the joy that he lost. (PG - 90 minutes)

Sophie Nélisse plays a spirited young girl who, sent to live with a foster family in WWII Germany, begins collecting books and, with the help of her new parents and a secret guest under the stairs, learns to read and creates a magical world that inspires them all. (PG-13 - 125 minutes)

Joseph: “Angels Sing” harnesses the happiness of the holidays, boasting an accomplished cast of musical artists/actors and a spectacular soundtrack of Christmas music while ending on a note that feels emotionally rewarding and even a little bit spiritually resonant - all without ever getting cheesy or preachy.

Stan: Reminiscent of the classic film ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ (1959), director Brian Percival presents a stark, foreboding view that many have only read about historically, as the world of Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nélisse) is turned upside down with foster care placement and the outbreak of WWII. With very good performances by the cast, the film tugs at one’s heart every moment of viewing.

Emile Hirsch and Stephen Dorff play a pair of working-class brothers who flee their Reno Motel after getting involved in a fatal hit-andrun accident. Also starring Kris Kristofferson and Dakota Fanning. (R - 85 minutes) Stan: The eclectic cinematic style of directors Alan Polsky and Gabe Polsky catapults the film to an above average mystery thriller as the merits of right and wrong, and doing the right thing are the underlying themes as the brothers true natures rise to the surface as they attempt to mentally suppress the gravity of their act.

Special Feature! By Stan Robinson It started to happen quite unexpectedly a couple of weeks ago. At the end of the screening for Robert Redford’s latest ‘All is Lost’, I sat in my seat, a bit stunned by his ‘tour de force’ performance with minimal dialogue and the only actor in the film. And, ‘All is Lost’ prompted my remembering the film that inspired me to follow his work so many years ago.

figures in modern US cinema. The young Freeman attended Los Angeles City College before serving several years in the US Air Force as a mechanic between 1955 and 1959. His first dramatic arts exposure was on the stage including appearing in an all-African American production of the musical ‘Hello, Dolly!’ With his recognizable voice and familiar face, it was 1989s ‘Driving

the iconic line ‘You talkin’ to me?’ in 1976’s ‘Taxi Driver’ prompted my acute attention to his work throughout the years with the main thought that I’ll always get an interesting character portrayal from Robert De Niro who is 3 years older than I am. Michael Douglas ~ Born: Michael Kirk Douglas on September 25, 1944 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Michael Douglas, who’s father Kirk Douglas was

It happened again, at the end of the screening for ‘Last Vegas’. As the closing credits rolled, I thought about the first film of each of the stars Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline that prompted me to follow their work. The realization hit me: we’re the same age group, the same generation, with over 40 years of involvement in the medium of film we all love so dearly. I thought about each of these men and that key film that got my attention so many years ago. Here they are, in chronological age and order along with that key film that got my attention. By the way, I’m 67 years old. Robert Redford ~ Born: Charles Robert Redford Jr. on August 18, 1936 in Santa Monica, California to Charles Robert Redford, an accountant for Standard Oil, and Martha Hart. His mother died in 1955, the year after he graduated from high school. Charles Robert Redford Jr. was a scrappy kid who stole hubcaps in high school and lost his college baseball scholarship at the University of Colorado because of drunkenness. After studying at the Pratt Institute of Art and living the painter’s life in Europe, he studied acting in New York at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. The film that got my attention and I have been following Robert Redford’s work since was ‘The Chase’ (1966) directed by Arthur Penn. Robert Redford’s role as the misunderstood escape convict took hold and hasn’t let go. Robert Redford is 10 years older than I am. Morgan Freeman ~ Born: June 1, 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee. With an authoritative voice and calm demeanor, this ever-popular American actor has grown into one of the most respected

Kevin Kline ~ Born: Kevin Delaney Kline on October 24, 1947 in St. Louis, Missouri. After attending Indiana University in Bloomington, Kevin Kline studied at the Juilliard School in New York. In 1972, Kline joined the Acting Company in New York, which was run by notable John Houseman. With this company, Kline performed Shakespeare across the country. On the stage, Kline has won two Tony Awards for his work in the musicals ‘On the Twentieth Century’ (1978) and ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ (1981).

‘Veteran Actors Prompt Nostalgia Journey’

It was Kevin Kline’s zany characterization of Otto in ‘A Fish Called Wanda’ (1988), which also starred Jamie Lee Curtis that prompted a watchful eye on Kevin Kline’s work from that film forward. And, having the opportunity of working with Jamie Lee Curtis on the film ‘My Girl’ (1991), told her I had a crush on her since ‘Halloween’, throughout the film she made it a point to make me blush at every opportunity! I’m a year older than Kevin Kline.

Miss Daisy’, an Oscar® nomination, and perseverance in tough and near impossible situations that prompted my paying attention to the work of Morgan Freeman, and is 9 years older than I am. Robert De Niro ~ Born: Robert Anthony De Niro Jr. on August 17, 1943 in New York City, New York. Robert De Niro, who is thought of as one of the greatest actors of his time, was born to two artists. He was trained at the Stella Adler Conservatory and the American Workshop. He first gained fame for his role in ‘Bang the Drum Slowly’ (1973), but he gained his reputation as a volatile actor in ‘Mean Streets’ (1973), which was his first film with director Martin Scorsese.

considered one of the world’s biggest film stars when he was growing up, has indeed gained fame and acclaim. His breakthrough role was on the TV series ‘The Streets of San Francisco’ (1972) opposite screen veteran Karl Malden. Michael Douglas gained quite a following on this show, and left it to produce ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ (1975). It was ‘The China Syndrome’ (1979), directed by James Bridges, starred Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon, and Michael Douglas who also produced the film that endeared me to his work. I was working at NBC-TV News in Chicago as a news film editor and related to the film’s newsgathering theme. Michael Douglas is 2 years older than I am.

Stan Robinson ~ Born: Stanley Delanor Robinson on October 25, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois. Was a normal kid growing up until at age 14 in 1960, I saw the George Pal production of ‘The Time Machine’ on the big screen. I borrowed my grandfather’s 8mm camera and started shooting any and everything with my parents thinking ‘I had lost it’ as my focus shifted from the normalness of teenage kids to spending hours at movies. I studied film production at the Community Film Workshop of Chicago after which my 2-minute film to graduate won 1st place in the light comedy category at the Young Chicago Filmmakers Festival in 1972. That win, (Roger Ebert was one of the judges) led to an internship/and a job as an assistant news film editor at NBC-TV Chicago (Robert Zemeckis was also an intern at the same time). As I thought about each of these men and the many films they have contributed to the art of film, I thought of the wonderful nostalgia journey they provided me with their work throughout the years. Feeling rather proud to call them, ‘My generation’ of actors.

Four Peaks Brewery, Humble Pie and Delux Burger amongst new additions to Phoenix Sky Harbor’s Terminal 4 courtesy of SSP America America’s Friendliest Airport is quickly becoming America’s Tastiest Airport. SSP America, the North American division of SSP, the leading operator of food and beverage brands in travel locations worldwide is proud to announce today the completion of its first stage of developments highlighting locally celebrated restaurants and Valley cuisine at Phoenix Sky Harbor’s Terminal 4. From gourmet burgers and wood oven pizzas to scratch-made cakes and craft brewed beers, six Phoenix restaurateurs are bringing a locavore’s approach and an artisan’s touch to the dining options at PHX. Part of SSP America’s 10 year, $800 million contract with Sky Harbor, the new portfolio promises to meet the diverse and growing needs of Terminal 4 while remaining faithful to the airport’s vision of offering passengers world-class services that reflect a true “taste of place” with food prepared by businesses and chefs that call Phoenix home. SSP America’s President and CEO, Les Cappetta, commented, “The demand for local food, prepared by local culinary leaders is accelerating in every corner of the United States. Phoenix Sky Harbor had a very clear vision in wanting to offer its customers a true taste of the Phoenix food scene – and we were happy to help make that vision a reality. SSP is truly proud and honored to be partnering with so many exceptional businesses from the Phoenix community.” “We have already received tremendous feedback on the new dining options

in our busiest terminal,” said Acting Aviation Director, Tamie Fisher. “Passengers enjoy sampling some of the finest restaurants Phoenix has to offer, right here at the Airport.” Pre-security at Terminal 4, passengers can start their journey like Phoenix locals start their day - with an expertly pulled shot of strong, aromatic, artisan-roasted java made from organic, Fair Trade beans from Lola Coffee. Once through security, a newly revamped food court near Gate A22 features a range of tempting options. For the gourmet minded burger lover, Delux Burger, serves Niman Ranch premium patties cooked to order, served on a fresh briochestyle buns, draped in American cheese, and layered with fresh toppings of red onions, pickles and thick slabs of beefsteak tomatoes. Serving the Valley’s favorite pizza, Humble Pie’s quick-serve location offers fierce competition for hungry appetites with artisan pizzas and signature salads— giving passengers a preview of what its full-service location will offer early next year. Complementing the two local options is nationally acclaimed Pei Wei. Pei Wei invites guests to start their journey in a place where they can experience the unique and varied flavors of China, Japan, Korea, Thailand or Vietnam. Here, fiery woks sear the day’s freshest ingredients, locking in their vibrant flavors to create hot, fresh mouth-watering dishes. Ordering kiosks serve as an added convenience for all three locations in the food court allowing busy travelers the ability to skip the line, order and pay during peak, high volume traffic periods. A few steps from the food court, gourmet sandwiches, salads, cupcakes, famous sugar cookies, pastries and snacks – all perfectly sized for traveling can be found at Tammie Coe To Go.

Conveniently located just after Security Checkpoint D, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, the premier specialty coffee and tea company in the U.S., delights travelers with handcrafted coffees that are rich in flavor and the finest rare teas, all sourced the world over for their highest quality. Nocawich Express near Gate C1, showcases irresistible salads and sandos whose cheeky names match their eclectic ingredients such as The Cisco Kid, comprised of southwestern turkey breast, white cheddar, cranberry jam, bacon garlic aioli and arugula resting within multigrain bread. Rounding out the first phase of SSP’s openings at PHX, is Arizona’s beloved craft brewer, Four Peaks Brewery. This 3,600 square foot restaurant encourages passengers to dwell in its warm casual interior – a study of textured wood and brick, enhanced by period copper lighting. Travelers

will be immediately drawn to the distinctive central bar and its sleek industrial sized steel beer tanks, where they can start their meal with Four Peaks’ best-selling Garlic Cheese Beer Bread served alongside a choice of iconic microbrews anchored by Four Peaks’ Kilt Lifter Scottish-Style Ale, 8th Street Pale Ale, and Hop Knot IPA. To maximize our travelers’ precious time, SSP has partnered with ‘Tappedout’, a mobile application providing customers the convenience to pay directly from their phone without the assistance of their server. Four Peaks Brewery’s newest location at Terminal 4’s Gate A20 promises that every beer and food-loving passenger will remember their trip to Phoenix, long after departure. SSP’s second phase of exciting new dining developments at Sky Harbor is underway, and will begin opening throughout the remainder of 2013.

Barring an unforeseen development, the Sunday, Nov. 17, Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway should come down to a two-way battle for the points title between five-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson and 2003 titlist Matt Kenseth. And through seven Chase races, 41-year-old Wisconsin native Kenseth has served notice that he is more than up to the task. As of late October, he had seven victories in 2013, to go with 10 top-fives, 18 top-10s and two poles to place him tied atop the Chase standings with the ever-formidable

Johnson. In the event this remains so following Homestead, Kenseth’s seven wins (to Johnson’s five) would be the tiebreaker and give him the series championship. Historically speaking, it appears neither Kenseth nor Johnson would have a clear-cut advantage on the South Florida 1.5-mile oval. Kenseth has one career win here (in 2007) in 13 races, to go with three top-fives and five top-10s for an average finish of 17.62. Johnson has never won at Homestead, but he does own more top-fives (four) and top10s (seven) and a better average finish (15.33) in 12 races. So look for the racing to be wide open on Sunday as Kenseth and Johnson go all out at Homestead, ever mindful of the fact that there is, indeed, no tomorrow. ESPN will have coverage of the seasonending race.

Brees looks to dine on NFL defenses in 2013 As of early August, the biggest controversy to come out of New Orleans Saints training camp was the $3 tip Drew Brees left on a $74 Chinese takeout order. And if that’s the biggest issue the 34-year-old quarterback faces this season, he’ll be a happy man. But no matter where you come down in the debate over the appropriate gratuity for takeaway food, there is no question there is a lot of anticipation in Saints Nation in 2013, what with the Bountygate scandal, head coach Sean Payton’s resulting suspension and a dismal 7-9 2012 season finally behind them. Brees is a big part of that equation. Coming off a stellar 2012 season in which he threw for 5,177 yards and 43 touchdowns, the Texan’s career stats read something like a dinner party’s padded check. Since coming to the Big Easy as a free agent in 2006, he’s surpassed 4,000 yards in passing every year and topped 5,000 three times while throwing more than 30 TDs each year since 2008. His completion percentages are also impressive, above 60 percent every year except one (57 percent in 2003 with San Diego) and above 70 percent twice. If there’s a downside to his game, it’s interceptions, which generally range in the high teens to a high of 22 in 2010. Full name: Drew Christopher Brees Birthplace: Austin, Texas Birth date: Jan. 15, 1979 height/weight: 6 feet/209 pounds career highlights: A four-time All-Pro and seven-time Pro Bowler ... two-time NFL Offensive Player of the Year and NFC MVP ... Super Bowl XLIV MVP personal: Lives in New Orleans and San Diego with wife Brittany and their three sons ... active in charity work

MACK NEWTON ON… Uncovering Your Strengths I love it when I hear people talk about being ready when opportunity knocks. That always makes me laugh. Why? Because opportunity NEVER knocks! I don’t care how long you wait, you will never hear opportunity knocking. Not in this lifetime… not in ten lifetimes! The reason is simple… YOU are opportunity and you must first create and then recognize and then SEIZE opportunity. So, where exactly is the knocking? That phrase is all about people waiting and waiting for something to happen that doesn’t exist. That phrase is all about people postponing uncovering and developing their strengths. Uncovering and developing your strengths is what creates opportunity and leads you to fulfilling your destiny. Uncovering the strength of your personality will allow you to recognize opportunity and uncovering the strength of your character will allow you to seize opportunity. As I said…YOU are opportunity!

Seek Adventure at the Phoenix Rock Gym

Arizona’s Largest & Best Indoor Climbing Gym Since 1992

When it comes to this subject of strengths and weaknesses, there may be many varying opinions on where to focus your energy. Do I focus on eliminating my weaknesses or do I focus my energies on maximizing my strengths? In the past, I felt that I would improve faster and more permanently if I focused on improving my weaknesses. At this point, after training and teaching Tae Kwon-Do for over 59 years and becoming a Senior Master rank, I have shifted my thinking on the subject. Here’s why. If you spend all your time working on

your weaknesses or limitations, the very best you can hope for is mediocrity. That’s right, the best you could be is average. I’ve seen it time and time again…so much wasted opportunity. However…if you focus your energy on uncovering your strengths and playing to your strengths, there is no limit on how good you can get or how far you can go. This doesn’t mean that you completely ignore your weaknesses…it just means that you focus your energy on your strengths. Uncover your strengths. I’ve also been amazed through time how much power has been given to weaknesses over our strengths. I’m not quite sure how that happened. Anyway, it’s important to note that your strengths should not be suspect or in any way minimized because of your weaknesses. It seems that people do that to themselves and then issue instructions for the rest of the world to follow. When people allow the negative to stick to them by evaluating themselves solely by their weaknesses or limitations, they usually stick for life. That is a real opportunity blocker. Your strengths and weaknesses are two completely different issues and are simply a matter of where you focus your energy. One of the best ways to find out what your strengths are is to ask people you know and trust. It seems that other people always see your strengths before you do. Once you find out what your strengths are, begin to associate with people who have strengths in the areas of your weaknesses. So, now, even as you focus on your strengths…by association, your weaknesses will also improve. As I said…you ARE opportunity…it’s all about you and your attitude. Your attitude and integrity. Focus on your strengths and your weaknesses become irrelevant. Knock, knock…who’s there. -

PRIVATE LABEL BEERS Have you ever wandered into Joe’s Bar and said, “Hey, look! There’s a handle that says Joe’s on it. How cool, Joe is making his own beer?” Of course, Joe really isn’t making his own beer. Joe is buying a keg of beer from somebody that has allowed them to private label it as exclusive for Joe’s. This is a trend that cycles around every once in a while and it has been rearing its ugly head lately. Now don’t get me wrong, some of these beers are fine beers, it’s just the concept that annoys me. The basic idea is that a bar owner, either through vanity or some belief that it will create brand loyalty, decides to go to a brewery and allow them to put his name on one of their beers and sell it under a private label. Now on the surface this seems like a good idea because if you can get them hooked on Joe’s Pale Ale, they will have to come to Joe’s to get the pale ale. The problem is that it isn’t Joe’s Pale Ale, it’s ABC Brewery’s pale ale and they sell it in a bunch of other places. Given that the law requires the brewery to be listed on the tap handle, it doesn’t take too much time to figure out that the bar down the street is serving the same pale ale as Joe. Because Joe still has to buy his pale ale, it is the same price as ABC Brewery Pale is everywhere else. There are also private label bottles and cans although you mostly see them at the larger chain stores since minimum purchase commitments are very high. The idea behind these brands is somewhat the same as Joe’s except they have the added advantage of being able to keep the price lower

than the competition. This is because they are able to buy in such large quantity and cut their own deals with large breweries. In theory, once again, this makes sense considering many grocery shopper buyers are price driven. (Except when it comes to items that have a good bit of brand loyalty… like beer.) A Coors or Corona drinker will drink that brand almost every time, and are willing to pay a couple of bucks more for doing so. Studies have shown that 41% of people that purchase beer feel that it is a must have brand for them. The highest ranking category for brand loyalty is pet food at 49%.

private labeling. For the most part, these are bars that have really gone out of their way to promote their label and make it truly identifiable with the overall brand of their establishment. However, most bar owners, like Joe, tend to slap up a custom made handle, which is frequently just a plain paddle that somebody has crafted a label for, tap the beer and wait for people to try it. They have no real financial interest in the brand over and above the other brands on tap since they pay the same for every keg. These are the ones that fail and if the beer is still on tap six months later it has become more of a vanity issue than anything else.

The interesting thing is that craft drinkers have it both ways, and either way hurts our friend Joe from the first two paragraphs. Many craft drinkers are loyal to a handful of breweries and if they don’t immediately realize that Joe’s is made by one of their faves, they may never even try it. And they certainly won’t be able to order it at another bar. The other side of that coin is that craft drinkers tend to be experimental and show more style loyalty than individual brand loyalty. For example, an IPA drinker is going to try whatever IPA he sees, if it looks interesting, but is also not going to order that IPA exclusively. The style drinker will cycle through various beers of his or her favorite styles at several bars; and while Joe’s may get a shot on a visit to Joe’s bar, it may never pop back up in the rotation since this drinker tends to rotate through bars as well.

There are a handful of brewers out there that make special beers just for private labeling. This seems to be a little more successful as they will only have 10 or so handles of this in a given market, all under private labels. There is no ABC Brewery reference point so people are willing to give it a try and when it is unique become return customers. This is especially helpful if the style is an interesting variation on a basic beer flavor. For example, an unfiltered amber still has that nice middle of the road amber flavor that the middle of the road drinker will enjoy, but the unfiltered aspect provides an interesting change of pace and may even hook in the experimental craft drinker. One thing about the experimental craft drinker is that they love to find something unique that is not available everywhere.

There are some bars that do well with

As a rule, however, private labeling isn’t necessarily good for the breweries. Some brewers will say that

a dollar is a dollar and as long as they are selling beer, it’s all good. What they are missing is the same thing as Joe. If you remember Joe had a beer that he paid the same price for as if it wasn’t a private label and in doing so may have sacrificed the luster of the brand. For the brewery, they are getting the same dollar return on that keg and putting in the same amount of effort to sell that keg. Perhaps more, if they are involved in creating the tap handle for the bar. However, they lose most of the possibility of gaining any additional ABC Brewery customers from selling that keg as most people that try it won’t take the time to learn who makes it, and if they do, they tend to not remember the next time. Most people get used to a brewery’s general style of tap handles, and, if the private label doesn’t have the same style, they won’t recognize it on subsequent visits. So the brewery has made a few bucks on the keg, but lost any buildup of goodwill. So there you have it, private labels can do okay, but historically do not. Private labels, except in a few instances are not typically brand builders for the account serving them. Private labels don’t usually bring in any extra money to the bar or brewery. Finally, most consumers don’t have an interest in private labels. So go ahead, try Joe’s Pale Ale and try it again if you think you like it. But for me, the best thing about the private labels is trying to guess what beer it actually is, so I know exactly what I am drinking. That’s a fun game to play. Until next time…

By “King” James Swann Hello again beer lovers, today let’s chat about the second installment of the WOLFPACK Strong Ale Series, The Winter Brew. For those not yet familiar with the Wolfpack, I shall explain. Twice a year here in Arizona, a group of craft beer

THE WOLFPACK RISES AGAIN!

bar owners, managers and media types gather together to brew a beer at Sleepy Dog Brewing in Tempe, AZ. The first installment was a Double IPA brewed with agave nectar and lots of Amarillo hops. It was quite nice although it lacked the aroma one might expect from such a well (late addition) hopped brew. It was tapped in just about every great craft beer pub across the valley last year on National IPA Day and promptly at 7pm. Great group effort! Now that kind of creativity may sound hard to beat but many of us came together again for a pre brew meeting and admittedly the ideas were magic. This next beer will be a Strong Winter Ale brewed in the tradition of Arizona’s five Cs. Cotton, Copper, Climate, Citrus & Cattle. Sound strange? Allow me to explain. First off, we will be using malted and roasted cotton seeds along with fresh tangerine and orange. The beer will have a copper color and be made with just a touch of Lactose (milk sugar) to cover the cattle. As for climate, the beer will be released at the perfect time of the season to pair with the weather.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

The tapping date will be February 14th which is of course Valentine’s Day, Arizona’s birthday and the unofficial start to Arizona Beer Week! How’s that for a slice of fried gold? As for style, count on a strong citrusy brew with beautiful color and a slightly nutty character from the cotton seeds. Yes indeed The Wolfpack is back! Until Next Week, Cheers!

The restaurant and bar hosts a yearly Wine Festival, and this year’s event will feature 20 wines, four wine distributors and a special food menu created by Chef Sarah Baer. My Wine Cellar & Bistro’s Third Annual Wine Festival will take place Sunday, Nov. 24, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Upon entrance to the event, attendees will receive 20 tickets and a wine glass. With three hours to taste all 20 wines, guests can relax to live music and enjoy what Chef Sarah cooks up. The live music will feature Notes from Neptune, and they will be playing on the outdoor patio.

ZoyaVora-Shah, who purchased My Wine Cellar in October 2011 and changed the name to My Wine Cellar & Bistro, has 12 years of wine experience and a passion for hospitality. Since taking over the establishment, My Wine Cellar has been rated one of the best wine bars by Phoenix Magazine in 2012. In addition to yearly wine festival, My Wine Cellar& Bistro offers ongoing wine education classes, a monthly book club and special events. Wines by the bottle or by the glass are always available, and they also offer three-ounce tastes, so that guests can “build their own flight.” The Wine Festival is $25 including tax (or $20 cash) at the door. All wines will be available for retail purchase at a discounted price. My Wine Cellar & Bistro is located at 5030 East Warner Road, in Ahwatukee Foothills.

Hopdoddy Opens Doors in Scottsdale Eco-Conscious Beer, Wine and Spirit Lovers Rejoice By Alison Bailin Batz The long-anticipated Hopdoddy Burger Bar, named “Top 10 Best Burgers in the U.S.” opened its doors in Scottsdale on October 30. Hopdoddy is focused on making amazing food and serving eyepopping drinks while supporting the local agricultural economy, nurturing the environment, preserving the craft of food and contributing to effect change that will one day make cleaner, more nutritious, better tasting food available to everyone.

With the words “Hop” and “Burger” in its name, it is no secret that beer and burgers are more than a little important to the venue. But make no mistake, the word “Bar” is also in its name, meaning wines and spirits are more than just an afterthought on the menu. In fact, staying true to its environmentally conscious mantra, Hopdoddy is proudly offering Parducci’s line of sustainable white and red blends, which have earned regional and national acclaim including

Also on the wine tap are a wide variety of regional favorites including Oregon’s King Estate as well as Northern California’s Maanzas, Carmel, and Alexander Valley, respectively. In addition, for non-wine drinkers, rather than high fructose corn syrup, Hopdoddy syrups are made by hand, using only fresh ingredients, cane sugar and arrowroot; and naturally, all juices are fresh squeezed daily. The selection of hand-made shakes includes Vanilla Bean and Milkshake Oreo as well as Chocolate Stout, among others. The bar features a large selection of local and organic spirits, with a witty and satisfying menu of Sips for Grown Folks including a Skinny Dip Frozen Margarita, Cerveza Rita and Black Cherry Hard Lemonade, among others. In addition, a selection of local, small batch artisan brewery draft beers will be available.

Hopdoddy brings to diners the freshest available, all-natural, quality ingredients with a menu boasting a mind-blowing burger lineup, starting at $5.50. Twice a day, three types of buns are baked from scratch in-house, (classic egg, whole wheat and non-gluten). Their patties are ground fresh daily, and encompass anything between the buns, like Black Angus beef (hormone and antibiotic free), bison, lamb, turkey, Ahi tuna or the black bean corn patty. Even the Kennebec fries are handcut daily. Most burgers are served with farm fresh red leaf lettuce, white onion, ripe beef steak tomato, cheese, apple-smoked bacon, sassy sauce (a mayo and mustard blend), in addition to a tantalizing array of homemade condiments, including horseradish honey mustard and truffle aioli.

the International Award of Excellence in Sustainable Winegrowing from the Botanical Research Institute, an Environmental Leadership Award from the California Governors’ office, a Climate Action Champion Award from the California Climate Action Registry and many more. Grown in Mendicino’s oldest vineyard, the winemakers are dedicated to healthy vines and an even healthier ecosystem.

Hopdoddy is located at 11055 North Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85254. For more information call (480) 3482337 or visit www.hopdoddy.com.
