Church Basement Ladies presented by Mesa Arts Center

Thru November 22, 2009 Wednesday 2pm Thursday - Saturday 2 pm & 7:30pm Sunday 6pm Inspired by the books of Janet Martin and Suzann Nelson, Church Basement Ladies has been selling out shows in Minneapolis for the past 25 months and now they are coming to Mesa Arts Center. This hilarious musical comedy is a celebration of the church basement kitchens everywhere and the unsung women who work there. This new musical comedy, lead by William Christopher of M*A*S*H*, weaves the escapades of four women and their relationships as they solve the problems of a rural Minnesota church in 1964. Funny, touching and down-to-earth, the ladies’ hilarious antics will make audiences laugh till their side dishes hurt.

Androcles and the Lion presented by Childsplay, Inc.

Tempe Center for the Arts Thru November 15, 2009 Saturday 1pm & 4pm Sunday 2pm Androcles and the Lion is a musical farce adapted from an Aesop’s fable by American children’s playwright Aurand Harris in 1963. The hero is Androcles, a servant who performs a good deed (pulling out a thorn from a lion’s paw) and reaps the benefits later when he is sentenced to meet the lion in the coliseum. The play is set in Renaissance Italy and is performed in that period’s Commedia dell’arte style with its characters, costumes and movement. Androcles and the Lion is a musical romp with a terrific message. Although the classic story adapted fro the stage almost 50 years ago, the play deals with many issues that our country and the world face today – freedom, accountability, good deeds, prejudice, trust and friendship.

Influenced by family and his childhood years spent in Britain and Dubai, Heathcote’s work captures the cinematic charm and sophistication of the past by showing the indulgent ways of life portrayed by an array of characters, fashions, colors, and emotions. Each canvas suggests a story, prompting the viewer to consider the events of a single scene leaving questions open, allowing the imagination to construct multiple narratives. His lyric pieces and international following will captivate your attention and make this a most memorable artistic event.

team Leeds United and the historic year of 1974. If you’re thinking another sports movie, don’t. It’s more a movie of personality clashes, ideology, and egos that are the prime ingredients of business, any business, it just happens to be the business of football (soccer in England).

“Pirate Radio”, Rock & Roll before traditional radio! Review by Stan Robinson For a lot of us “Boomers” in the 60’s, before Rock & Roll was played on traditional radio stations, we listened to rock on secret mobile units broadcasting the music. The name of “pirate radio” was given to the roving units. And so it was in England who’s music of choice was jazz for the establishment. The younger generation, as in America, was into the sound of Rock & Roll. Not illegal to broadcast, an enterprising owner of a ship, with eight DJ’s, broadcasted the sounds of Rock off the coast of England in the North Sea! The DJ’s lived on board the ship known as Radio Rock and broadcasted the sounds with regular radio show shifts, and, was supported by advertisers. The seven English DJ’s and an American DJ known as

The Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman) were heroes to the English young people who listened secretly on their transistor radios. And yes, hot on their heels were the British government, who consistently tried and search for any means possible, including seeking to pass legislation to make it illegal to broadcast on the high seas, to save the minds of the young people. “Pirate Radio” is look at the history of rock & roll as it fought to be mainstream in England and the driving force from a handful of DJ’s in the middle of the North Sea who risked everything to keep rock & roll alive. The sound track, the music the DJ’s played, are the classic rock tunes of the 60’s and one can’t help but tap to the sounds as history unfolds! Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Michael Hadley, Charlie Rowe, Lucy Fleming, Tom Sturridge, Ian Mercer, Bill Nighy, Will Adamsdale, Tom Brooke, Rhys Darby, Nick Frost, and Katherine Parkinson. Written and directed by Richard Curtis. Focus Features release. Rated R for language, and some sexual content, including brief nudity. Runtime: 135 minutes.

It’s 1974. The young and upcoming Brian Clough (Michael Sheen) is hired to coach Great Britain’s championship team, Leeds United after the legendary coach Don Revie (Colm Meaney) who’s leaving to coach England’s national team. In contrast to Revie’s quiet, reserved, laid back style, Clough is controversial, quick mouthed, and uses the media at every opportunity to express viewpoints on the long, on-going animosity toward the exiting Revie. In parallel presentation, as Clough starts his tenure at Leeds, we learn the circumstances of his feelings, which revolve around the first meeting of the two men while coaching a lower tier team, and feelings of being looked down on, slighted, and ignored by Revie is fuel for winning. Clough is successful in taking his lower tier team to the top, beating the United Leeds, and all the while commenting to the media, on the “not so sportsmanship” conduct of the Leeds players and the coach who allows it! Brian Clough’s mission as he now gets the reigns of the coach of the Leeds, to exert his own philosophy of what a team should be. As we know from history, Brian Clough’s stay at Leeds was short, very short. What we have with “The Damned United” is a look at

the dynamics and the influences of that year in 1974, when the fierce competition of wills and ideology was fought off the field, as well as on. Michael Sheen excels once again as the young coach. His recent performances as real life persons including Prime Minister Tony Blair in “The Queen” (2006) and David Frost in “Frost/Nixon” (2008) which received 5 Oscar® nominations, and the screenplay by Peter Morgan, who also penned “The Queen” and “Frost/ Nixon”, presents a very compelling look at history. I’m sensing some sort of magic happens when Michael Sheen is given the character portrayals of Peter Morgan’s written words to bring to the screen… Starring Michael Sheen, Colm Meaney, Henry Goodman, David Roper, Jimmy Reddington, Oliver Stokes, and Ryan Day. Directed by Tom Hooper. Written by Peter Morgan. Rated R for language. Sony Pictures Classics release. Runtime: 97 minutes.

“We have been building anticipation for this movie with our fans online for a couple of years now with different trailers,” says Pierson. “This summer we made a short film with a couple of characters from the film, so we have been building interest in it slowly. Now the final piece of that puzzle is getting people to say ‘I want it to come to town.’ Once our distributor Roadside Attractions sees there is enough demand there, and the exhibitor in a specific town will hopefully book it. Harkins and Valley Art were cool enough to bring it to Phoenix.” Pierson is a current Los Angeles resident, but is a Phoenix native, born and raised in Ahwatukee. “I was a bag boy at the Fry’s at Ray and Ranch Circle,” laughs Pierson. “I am very excited because I used to go see independent movies at the Valley Art when I was in high school.”

A Missing Ring and a Hilarious Mystery Team By Randy Montgomery

10

A bit of a quandary arose while watching the new comedy Mystery Team. What could be written to accurately describe the theme and story of this movie? The best description; The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew meet the humor and language of South Park. In an interview, writer and co-star D.C. Pierson jokingly agreed, “It’s G-rated characters in an R-rated world. The contrast between those two things is what creates the humor for people.”

Mystery Team is the feature length film based on the sketch comedy from Derrick Comedy, a group of guys who met while in college at New York University and have been producing wildly popular internet videos since 2005. Their popularity has grown a cult like following thanks to sites such as YouTube. In fact, their internet fan base combined with modern technology is what has helped bring their film to Tempe’s Harkins Valley Art Theatre. Fans demanded the film be screened in the Valley after using a new tool called “Demand It,” the same service that has fueled the success of Paranormal Activity.

November 12th - November 18th, 2009

Friends and family will be at the Phoenix premiere, but Pierson is not worried what they will think, “There is some pretty heavy R-rated jokes in the movie, but any family member that I would think would be taken aback by it have already seen the movie at my house. I think my stepmom thinks there are a few things involving strippers that we should cut out of the film. We’re insistent that it’s still in there. She’ll have to deal

with I guess.” So what is Mystery Team all about? A trio of best friends were junior sleuths years ago. They are now eighteen and still enjoy solving mysteries. They embark on their latest challenge; finding a missing ring. Telling you that they find it won’t ruin the story. But you’ll never guess where they find it! The child-like characters are thrown into a seedy, yet comical adult world. Pierson says, “The main characters themselves are very innocent, so they themselves are offended by what they see. They come from an innocent place.” Pierson and the Derrick Comedy team are still thankful to their fans and the technology that made this theatrical run possible. “It’s a little independent movie we made ourselves up in New Hampshire a couple of years ago, and we are able to bring the movie to an audience because we can only really reach that audience through the internet. The movie’s actually coming to a theater and will be seen in a traditional theatrical way because of that.” Mystery Team opens Friday, November 13 exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. Pierson will make an appearance at several opening weekend screenings.

The Night Owl If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE You know we like to support our community by giving to the less fortunate, and this year it is more important than ever so you’ll see some charitable events in virtually every Night Owl that we ask you to contribute to. The ones we choose usually make it fun, like drinking wine or going to a concert. Seriously, all you have to do is drink wine or go to a concert to help some local food banks. For that information and all that happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley, read on…and DONATE. (Donations! Donations!—think Coming to America). HB Hanratty’s: There’s nothing better than walking into your favorite bar, and having your favorite bartender serve you your favorite drink. It’s like finally walking through the door after a long day, or getting into the shower when you’re hung over; it’s so Zen. For 30 years HB Hanratty’s off the Camelback Central corridor has been this for many people, a place of reprieve where everyone knows your name and where drinks are shared with pseudo-friends. Under new ownership HB Hanratty’s is looking to be the watering hole of choice for more people by luring new and old patrons with its affordably priced “4-3-2” drink specials. The iconic Phoenix pub is offering $4 you call-its, $3 bottled beers, and $2 drafts through the rest of the year. Located near The Parlor and St. Francis, the new owners, Diane Quan and Steve Dragovich, veterans in the Valley’s food and beverage industry, are making subtle changes to the well-know hangout to introduce HB Hanratty’s to a new generation of Phoenicians. The bar will still feature its flagship pool tables, comfortable seating areas, vintage dartboards with real-deal steel-tipped darts, and signature ‘Cheers’ like atmosphere. Stop in and introduce yourself soon, or connect with them on Facebook at HB Hanratty or on Twitter at @ hbhanrattys. Cultural Pleasures: Shakira advises that “hips don’t lie” and 3OH!3 demands you “do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips,” but really they’re all taking direction from the original hip shakers - belly dancers. To see hip-shaking done correctly go the largest locally produced belly dance festival in Arizona, The Middle East themed Fall Festival of Music & Dance. The festival will feature Arabic coffee and tea, and Middle Eastern delicacies, premium hookahs, custom henna body art, and live music Saturday, November 14 from Noon to 9 p.m. General admission is only $10. Visit www.mecda.org for more information. Christmas Pudding: It is a Phoenix tradition, it is an awesome fun time, it is Alice Cooper’s Christmas Pudding. On December 18th at the Dodge Theatre, the 2009 version of Christmas Pudding will take place. The variety show is variety “is designed to be an entertaining blend of comedy, music, dance and surprise performances.” Although they have a bit of everything, the event is largely driven by musical acts and this year’s lineup includes Warrant, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers, Dee Snider, Lita Ford, Scott MacIntyre, Gary Mule Deer, Runaway Phoenix, Brad Perry Band, and River of Life Choir. Local man about town and former Channel 3 anchor Brad Perry will be emceeing the night’s activities. While it is still far away, tickets are on sale now and range from

$22.75 to $45 depending on what you get. Best of all, the event is a fundraiser for the Solid Rock Foundation, which helps teenagers out. For more information on the event, visit alicepudding.com. Mill Farmer’s Market: You know we love food and supporting our food community, and there is nothing more “community” than a farmer’s market. With farmer’s market-season kicking off, we have the grand opening of a new one right on Mill Avenue. The Mill Avenue Farmer’s Market, located at the 6th St. Park just east of S. Mill Ave, will have its grand opening on November 15th from 9:00a.m.-2:00 p.m. (and will be open every Sunday during season thereafter. At the market, they’ll have fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, and all sorts of other wares from local businesses. Vendors include Bobbies Flowers, Arizona Bread Company, Boxed Greens, Sids Viciously Good Cookies and many more. For more information visit millavefarmersmarket.com. Taste of the NFL: With the holidays virtually upon us, it is time that we come together to help stock up the local St. Mary’s Food Bank so families don’t go hungry, and we can do that with the Taste of the NFL program. This year, due to the crappy economy, this task is as important as ever. Thankfully, there are great people out there that have made donating very easy for you—so easy that all you have to do is drink wine. No that isn’t a misprint, to donate food all YOU have to do is drink wine. You see more than 100 Arizona restaurants and bars have agreed to carry and sell select E&J Gallo Winery brands in order to raise money to feed the hungry for the Food Bank. Each case of participating E&J Gallo Winery brands sold during the Taste of the NFL program (which goes through December 31st) will generate 30 meals for St. Mary’s Food Bank. So, instead of your normal drink order make a conscious effort to by E&J Gallo brands. For a current list of participating Arizona restaurants, bars and E&J Gallo Winery brands visit epicurious. com/gallo Charity Concert: Did you read the above? I wasn’t joking when I said that this year is as important as ever to donate to local food banks and good people have made it easy for you to do. This time, all you have to do is go to a concert (so above drink wine and this one go to a concert). Anyways, so the Friday, November 13th KNIX Radio hosts a dual live acoustic/ country concert by Josh Thompson & Houston Country at Cave Creek Coffee Company for FREE in exchange for 10 canned food items benefitting the “Million Can Crusade” for St. Vincent de Paul. The concert begins at 6:00pm so get on up there and do it. There are grocery stores along Cave Creek and Scottsdale Roads (if you are driving from the South) so don’t blow it (and buy MORE than 10 cans!) For more information on this visit cavecreekcoffee.com or knixcountry.com. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

and balanced as most big games took a backseat to the heated, high-scoring battles of OU vs. NU. Known to the world as “The Big Red Rivalry”, both squads were armed with relentless wishbone attacks. Points were put on the board in a hurry as tailbacks from both sides dazzled millions of fans with the speed and flair of an Olympic track meet. GAME! SECTION

Beat the Lull of Tuesday Night at Tavern on Mill’s Game Night Every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. ASU students and working professionals gather for some friendly competition, great drink specials and food. The Tavern on Mill, located at 404 South Mill Ave, sets up table games in its 7,000 square foot bar, restaurant and patio space. The Tavern on Mill has something for everyone every day of the week and Tuesday Night’s are no exception, with a well rounded drink selection and more games than you knew existed. How many ants can a giant ant eater eat in 1 day? a) $5,000 b) 10,000 or c) $30,000? If you like impressing your friends with all of the useless information taking up space in your brain, perhaps trivial pursuit is your game. “We bought the Young Players edition of Trivial Pursuit so I don’t feel dumb,” said Misty Maki, Tuesday night manager and gamer referee, “People will absentmindedly pick up a card and start quizzing their friends. That’s usually how a game starts.”

Joining a game of Taboo or Apples to Apples is a great way to get friends together for a good laugh. Bring back the nostalgia of your youth by starting a game of Connect Four, Don’t Break the Ice, Sorry or UNO. Unlike your youth, you are sipping a $3.00 House Margarita and your mother is no where around so you can yell out, “draw four bitch,” to your over confident, UNO playing friend sitting across from you. Want to get a little more physical with your game playing? The Tavern also has Wii Sports or AMF Bowling. Who doesn’t love the game Cornhole? Imagine a bean bag in one hand and a $2 Corona in the other. Coming Soon: Giant Jenga, which stands over 5 feet tall! Drink and Food Specials: $2 Corona, Pacifico, Dos XX $3 House Margaritas $2 Tacos Be the first to answer the following question, in person, Tuesday, November 17, after 6pm to get a $20 Tavern on Mill Gift Card: What inventor first recorded Mary had a Little Lamb in 1877? Let the games Begin!

While certainly not intentional or trying to recreate what was, Duff is simply being himself. While this may not reach as many people as his former band, it certainly is more rootsy, vibrant and in touch with his roots than what the current Axl Rose & cohorts version of Guns N’ Roses is doing. – Stephen Wilkinson

punks or rockers. “Sleaze Factory” verses have G N’ R like melody and vocal similarities and even sounds a bit like his former band but holds its own, “Flatline” continues the riff oriented almost G N’ R style into the fold. “I.O.U.” has a good melody, “Mother’s Day” slows things down for a bit of melancholy while “I See Through You” gets right back on the brute force without E R E Cwith Ntrack OR Z O missing Dbeat. “No Shame” shifts a K C gears back into a G N’ R territory while being a tad more commercial.

ABBEY ROAD MEMORIES November 19th at SKYE 6pm & 8:30pm There are tribute shows and then there are TRIBUTE SHOWS! The Platinum Room at Skye has most definitely raised the bar when it comes to affordable Live Entertainment with the introduction of their incredibly successful Tribute Show series. In an economy when most restaurants are struggling to keep the lights on, Skye, located just off Bell Road in Peoria, is setting the pace with its tribute show series. Forget whatever preconceived notions you may have about tribute shows – this is not your typical “Elvis Presley” impersonator. From an uncannily accurate tribute to Led Zeppelin to a rousing ABBA concert,

Skye has it all and continues to “WOW” audiences night after night. Abbey Road Memories™ is a unique tribute show which implements legitimate rock & roll stars to pay tribute to the Beatles. Abbey Road Memories™ celebrates the Beatles and all things Abbey Road. Denny Laine from the Moody Blues and Wings, teams with Joey Molland and Badfinger to create an evening of music from Rock’s most legendary locale. Abbey Road Memories™ features a complete performance of the Beatles’ classic album, as well as other songs recorded at Abbey Road Studios from the likes of Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons, solo Lennon/McCartney/Harrison and more - plus the hits of Denny Laine such as the chart topping “Go Now” as well as Badfinger classics such as “Come And Get It” and “No Matter What”. It is now 40 years since the release of this ground breaking album and what a way to celebrate by watching these rock & roll legends performing

the entire album live! Entertainment director Terry Davies explains, “…with all the choices we have these days, we are so happy to see 200-300 people coming to Skye to see these fantastic shows every night. We have lines outside the building before each show and I’m convinced it’s because these shows are simply a great value for money. Abbey Road Memories™ is going to be such a memorable night at Skye”. Ticket prices are as low as $10 and a special menu with many items under $10. Most of the shows in The

Platinum Room are nationally touring shows making a stop in Arizona on the way to Las Vegas or California. In the next few months, tribute to bands such as ABBA, Billy Joel & Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors, The Eagles, The Carpenters, Bruce Springsteen can be seen strutting their stuff in The Platinum Room. Are You Smarter Than A Nobel Prize Winner?

Let’s face it, most of us think we’re pretty well read and pretty darn smart. But not too many of us have won a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, and that is why I want to introduce you to Dr. Otto Warburg.

Dr. Otto Warburg 1931 Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Warburg won the 1931 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work during the 1920s on the then relatively unknown and mysterious disease called cancer. He successfully identified the root cause of cancer, and discovered that cancer cells, unlike normal cells, thrive in an anaerobic, acidic state rather than an oxygen rich, high pH environment. In fact, he discovered that cancer cannot grow in a high alkaline, oxygen rich environment at all. Think about this for a minute. This means we have known what causes cancer for over 78 years, but if this is true, why don’t we learn this fact in every high school biology class in America? Why don’t the cancer treatment centers, oncologists or cancer related charities shout this knowl-

edge from the rooftops? Why isn’t there a warning from the Surgeon General on every bottle or can of soft drinks or sports drinks sold in America? They are extremely acidic, after all, and can cause great damage to humans by helping to create an extremely acidic environment inside the body. And why isn’t there anything being done to tell every American to alkalize their body before it is too late? The good news is that there IS something being done to spread this news, and even more importantly, I have recently discovered an incredible way to achieve an alkaline balanced body that is simple, fast, and easy!

Change Your Water and Change Your Life! Can it really be as easy to create an alkaline balanced body as drinking a different kind of water every day? Yes! But only if it is the right kind of water, made fresh in your own kitchen every day from your very own powerful water processing machine.

Micro-Clustered for Maximum Absorption and Hydration After passing through one of these amazing machines, your water will be micro-clustered, which means it is the most effective water in the world when it comes to hydrating each and every one of the approximately 70 Trillion cells in your body. The vast majority of Americans are chronically dehydrated, which leads to a myriad of health challenges and concerns.

Every person I know wants to because of the extremely acidic lead a healthy, happy, active life, conditions of our bodies. but many people simply aren’t Alkalize or Die!
