Enjoy a Holiday Outing at the Arizona Broadway Theatre with Productions Perfect for the Entire Family This holiday season, Arizona Broadway Theatre is offering two productions that are perfect for the entire family. ABT’s mainstage production of A Christmas Carol: The Musical runs from November 27 through December 27 while the Theatre for Young Audiences production of The Last of the Dragons is being presented on December 5, 12 and 19.

About A Christmas Carol: The Musical

A Christmas Carol returns after making its mark on ABT audience members last holiday season. Edward Prostak returns to the ABT stage as Ebenezer Scrooge, the miserly character based on Charles Dickens’ timeless classic. This is an elaborate retelling of one of the most touching and

enduring Christmas tales of all time. A Christmas Carol is brought to life with spectacular special effects and a brilliant score by Tony Award-winner Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Anastasia) and Oscar Award-winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid). Cassandra Klaphake, ABT’s Casting Director and Artistic Producer, has gathered a cast of new and familiar faces for ABT’s remounting of A Christmas Carol – The Musical. New York based actor Edward Prostak (Ebenezer Scrooge) has appeared in the Broadway revival of Oliver!, in the Off-Broadway musical Zombies from the Beyond, and in the Christmas Show at Radio City Music Hall, where he

played Bob Cratchit. “It’s so exciting to be back in Arizona playing this wonderful role again with such a wonderful cast”, commented Prostak. “It has been a nice home-coming of sorts getting to see all the friends I made during the last holiday season.” Thirteen actors are returning from last year’s production, including David Errigo (Christmas Past), Laurie Trigg (Christmas Future) and Mace Archer (Jacob Marley). A Christmas Carol-The Musical includes a total cast of 34 plus 12 dancers from the Peoria Arts Institute, located on the campus of Foothills Elementary School.

About The Last of the Dragons

About Theatre for Young Audiences

The story of The Last of the Dragons is set in Cornwall, where every young princess is given over to a fire-breathing dragon so that she can be rescued by a handsome prince. Theatre for Young Audiences is part of ABT’s educational program which is comprised of professional actors performing for children. TYA’s season also includes: The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County (January 30, February 6 and 13, 2010) and Alice in Wonderland (March 20, 27 and April 3, 2010).

About Arizona Broadway Theatre ABT, Arizona’s one-of-a-kind, award-winning, state-of-the-art professional dinner theatre, showcases locally and nationally acclaimed artists both onstage and behind the scenes. Satan offers to cut Joe a deal - his life in exchange for stopping the Hernandez family from making their annual trek by foot from Sonora to Phoenix to catch the light rail to Bethlehem (it also stops in Vegas now). Comedy ensues.

In “The Blind Side”, a homeless black teenager is taken in by an upscale well to do white family in Mississippi. They see the extraordinary gifts of the teen, take him into their home as part of their family, and provide all that their power & influence has to be sure that the teenager can become the athletic and academic success to get into college, and go on to become a sought after NFL draft prospect. And as we who follow the NFL know, it’s the remarkable of story of Michael Oher, a First Round draft pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, selected by the Baltimore Ravens! Strong and enlightening performances by Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw as the parents, with Lily Collins as the older sister, a remarkable performance by Jae Head as the young ten year old brother, and Quinton Aaron as the teenager Michael Oher, we feel the true meaning of giving. And, Jae Head will surely be among my nominees for the Best Performance by a youth in a Lead or Supporting Role-Male when we members of the Phoenix Film Critics Society cast our ballots for our awards next month! Starring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Quinton Aaron, Jae Head, Lily Collins, Ray McKinnon, Kim Dickens, Adriane Lenox, and Kathy Bates. Written and directed by John Lee Hancock. Rated PG-13 for one scene involving brief violence, drug and sexual references. Warner Bros. Pictures release.

Interview by Stan Robinson Actor Woody Harrelson became the highly recognizable Woody in the TV series “Cheers” (1985-93). How coincidental for an actor to have a fictional character with the same first name as a recognition factor! For Woody Harrelson, that recognition is also the key factor in his big screen appearances. His breakout role in “Natural Born Killers” (1994) set the tone for the type of character portrayals he would undertake throughout his 25 years and counting as an actor. The roles are often quirky, off-center, and conflicted characters, which calls for an actor to reach deep within himself or herself to find the true traits for delivery. Currently Woody Harrelson has three movies out with characters as diverse as night and day. He’s the enigmatic Tallahassee in “Zombieland”, his character of the doomsday soothsayer Charlie Frost provides the insight to John Cusack’s character that the end of the world is closer than one may think in “2012”, and in his current movie “The Messenger”, his character of Captain Tony Stone is the bringer of bad news to the next of kin of the death of fallen soldiers. I asked Woody about the challenge of playing such a character with an emotionally monumental task, delivering news of a death to a next of kin… Woody: “When I approach characters, I establish the normal aspects of the character, then I’ll add

the other traits that the character should have and the reaction to the situation he finds himself in as it relates to the story, and yea, some call for some pretty extreme character sketches! Oren (Moverman, the director of “The Messenger”) did something that really added a sense of realism to the scenes where the delivery of bad news takes place. The cast who played the next of kin members, who would be getting the news, didn’t rehearse those scenes with me and Ben (Foster). They rehearsed them separately with Oren, and he kept us separated from them. When we knocked on a door, gave the news, whew, we had no idea of what the reaction was going to be, talking about some powerful moments!”

forward for that defining loyal fan base that knows the characters as well as the filmmaker does! Writer/ Director Troy Duffy’s characters of the MacManus brothers, Irish fraternal twins, who have made it a mission to eliminate the “kingpin” untouchables in Boston in “The Boondock Saints” (1999), established a firm presence in action/drama genre of “guy flicks”, leading to cult film follower’s status. With the release of the next installment, “The Boondock Saints II: All Saint’s Day”, and the cult followers expressing extreme approval, the action as well as the underlying quest of the two central characters goes forward. And so it is for writer/director Troy Duffy. We talked about the driving forces of Troy as writer and director as the next installment in the saga hits the big screen…

Actor Woody Harrelson delivers the message in, “The Messenger”… Review by Stan Robinson

Stan: Your films, although having a high profile action oriented tone, there’s a whole lot more in the underlying personalities in the characters! What was, or is, the motivation for Boondock Saints? Troy: “The first is just the frustration of being a victim of crime. My brother and I moved out to Hollywood initially to be a band, and where we lived, there was crime all over with my brother and I being the victims sometimes. I grabbed a pen instead of a gun, and started toying with fantasy for the first film. When the cult fan-base grew with acceptance, we had put down some of the ideas we had while shooting the first one, and decided to go with the second, “All Saint’s Day”.” Be sure to read more on this fascinating conversation with Troy Duffy. He talks about the next chapter in the lives of the four central characters we follow in the stories of the two movies, and the introduction of action character Special Agent Eunice Bloom, by actress Julie Benz at www.ScreenScene.org

One of the greatest rewards for an independent filmmaker is to have a movie become what’s referred to as a “cult classic”. The toughest part is to move the characters and the story AZWeeklyMagazine.com

In “The Messenger”, Woody Harrelson’s latest with the starring role of Captain Tony Stone, who has the unenviable regular assignment of delivering the news of the death of Army personnel killed in action to the next of kin. And as demonstrated in the play Hamlet, the tendency is to take out the frustration of bad news on the messenger delivering it. Captain Stone (Woody Harrelson) is assign to the department of the Army with the responsibility of notifying the next of kin of a death, and a senior officer. He’s just been assigned Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery (Ben Foster), who has just returned from a tour of duty in the Iraq/Afghanistan region, with a few months left to his military service. As the story unfolds, we’re given a look at the two men, as they cope with the effect the message they bring to love ones. Starring Ben Foster, Jena Malone, Eamonn Walker, Woody Harrelson, Yaya DaCosta, Portia, Lisa Joyce, Steve Buscemi, Peter Francis James, and Samantha Morton. Directed by Oren Moverman. Written by Alessandro Camon & Oren Moverman. Rated R for language and some sexual content/nudity. Oscilloscope Pictures release. Runtime: 105 minutes.

enjoyed family-style. It’s $59 per adult and $29 per child 12 and under. Reservations are required; call 602.468.0700 to reserve a table.

The trials of this year have made many of us have a little doubt about what we should be thankful for on this Thanksgiving as there is much to be unthankful for. The thing we all have to remember as individuals is that no matter how bad that we have it, it can always be worse. So let’s all gather around and make this Thanksgiving extra special by giving extra thanks. This week we’ll give you some Thanksgiving options for eating out or for rolling solo. For all that happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley; read on.

The Ritz a little too pricey or fancy? Why not try the old tried and true Bill Johnson’s Big Apple, which is a $12.99 all you can eat buffet? At Bill Johnson’s buffet, you’ll get everything you could ever want including turkey, ham, and all the fixins: gravy, stuffing, mashed

Thanksgiving Dining: There are many reasons individuals and families dine out for Thanksgiving, and here’s a round-up of some of the options if you are still looking, but you better get your booty in gear before all the reservations are gone:

Another tried and true is the Wigwam, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary. Their family -style tribute to traditional Thanksgiving features favorites from Virginia honey-cured ham to Southwest spiced turkey and sweet potato soufflé. After dinner, holiday dining guests are invited to enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride across the 500-acre resort grounds. Dinner is priced at $45 for adults and $20 for children 5-12, with children under age 5 free. Reservations are limited and can be made by calling 623-856-1018.

Grayhawk Golf Club will be offering a buffet which will include such traditional favorites as carved roasted turkey with an apple and walnut stuffing, and carved honey cured ham with a citrus glaze. They’ll also be featuring their signature Navajo corn chowder, along with a variety of vegetable dishes, a pasta station, salads, eggs benedict and hickory smoked bacon. Seating is at noon by reservation only and can be made by calling 480502-1700 (cost $40/adult $18/children6-13 yrs). Long time Arizona-favorite Rustler’s Roost is offering a $110 family package where the entire family can feast on a 16 - 20 pound oven roasted tom turkey with mushroom sage stuffing, mashed potatoes &gravy, candied yams, corn on the cob, cranberry-pear relish, Indian fry bread &biscuits, choice of a whole apple or pumpkin pie, and they even wrap up your leftovers to take home. For a lighter fare, a limited holiday menu is available, starting at just $16.95 for adults and $5.95 for kids. Rustler’s Roost will also have a live country music performance during the Thanksgiving celebration. How about a little champagne for Thanksgiving? Kokopelli’s restaurant inside the Gold Canyon Golf Resort hosting their signature Thanksgiving champagne buffet. For the past 15 years, Kokopelli’s has been offering the Thanksgiving dinner, which specializes in a wide gourmet fare of prime rib, halibut, salmon, ham, turkey, breakfast items, vegetables, and fresh fruit, all for $39.95. How about a little fancy-pants Ritz Carlton Thanksgiving? Bistro 24, located in the Ritz, will feature a new four-course, plated, family-style Thanksgiving experience. Each guest will be able to select a main dish with options like turkey, prime rib and sole. In addition, a variety of holiday side dishes will also be brought to the table to be

potatoes, cranberry sauce, fresh dinner rolls, and green beans. If prime rib and Bill Johnson’s barbeque sauce is more your style, you can get that for $19.99. There are multiple Valley locations.

Thankgiving for the Solo: I am thoroughly disappointed in the lack of events on Thanksgiving. I don’t know why more places don’t capitalize on one of the most popular going out days of the year. Perhaps it is a “given,” but shouldn’t they be giving a little something more when they have the chance? After turning down a thoughtful, but awkward invite to Las Vegas with my friend and her new boyfriend, and realizing that going home would be more of a ding to my wallet than I can afford, I decided to do Thanksgiving solo. After many fruitless searches for events to hit up I found only two that didn’t require me to pretend that eating out alone on a holiday wasn’t sad. I could chose to attend Raven’s Fourth Annual Thanksgiving Eve Party the evening before my solitary Turkey Day, or I could wonder aimless and confused at the 30th Annual Pros Elite Soccer Tournament and block party, November 27-29 in Tempe. Raven’s Thanksgiving Eve party, which will be held at the upscale Scottsdale waterfront restaurant and bar, Estate House, sounds more like my style with its classy atmosphere and reasonably priced $5 Imported beers and well cocktails, and live music from 7 p.m. until close. Sorry Pro Elite Soccer Tournament, I can’t say that I’ll make it, because try as I might, I just don’t get soccer. Check out www.ravenevents.com or www. prossoccer.org for more info on these events. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

PACQUIAO VICTORIOUS WITH ANOTHER NEAR FLAWLESS PERFORMANCE Floyd Mayweather Jr. Next on Pacquiao’s Radar

were coming,” Cotto said. The fight was billed as a 145-pound classic, and in the early rounds it didn’t disappoint. The two went after each other with a vengeance and Cotto more than held his own as they traded punches in the center of the ring before a roaring sellout crowd at the MGM Grand arena.

Manny Pacquiao put on yet another dominating performance last Saturday night, knocking down Miguel Cotto twice and turning his face into a bloody mess before finally stopping him at 55 seconds of the 12th round. The Filipino star used his blazing speed and power from both hands to win his seventh title in seven weight classes and cement his stature as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Pacquiao dropped Cotto with a right hand early in the third round, but he wasn’t badly hurt and came back to finish the round strong. But after Pacquiao put Cotto on the canvas with a big left hand late in the fourth round, the Puerto Rican was never the same again. “Our plan was not to hurry, but to take our time,” Pacquiao said. “It was a hard fight tonight and I needed time to test his power.”

Cotto took such a beating that his face was a river of red from the fury of Pacquiao’s punches, but he refused to quit even as his corner tried to throw in the towel after the 11th round. “I didn’t know from where the punches

Cotto’s face was marked early and he was bleeding midway through the fight as Pacquiao kept bouncing around and throwing punches in his unorthodox southpaw style. He tried to keep taking the fight to Pacquiao, but by then his punches had lost their

sting and his only real chance was to land a big punch from nowhere. “He hit harder than we expected and he was a lot stronger than we expected,” Cotto’s trainer, Joe Santiago, said. Cotto fought gamely, but in the later rounds he was just trying to survive as blood flowed down his face and Pacquiao came after him relentlessly. Santiago tried to stop the fight after the 11th round, but Cotto went back out to take even more punishment before a final flurry along the ropes prompted referee Kenny Bayless to end it.

Pacquiao, coming off of spectacular wins over Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, added another one against Cotto, who had lost only once and held the WBO version of the welterweight title. Pacquiao did it in his trademark way, throwing punches in flurries and from all angles until Cotto began to slow down. Then he pursued him nonstop until the end. The fight likely will set up an even bigger one against Floyd Mayweather Jr., with whom many in the crowd were already chanting, “We want Floyd! We want Floyd!”

Sleaze, tease and cheese are all words associated with “80’s rock”. Easily the most polished effort to date (2 EP’s and a full length CD), this collection of songs shows a slightly more mature progression and production that some may not expect but should accept as natural as opposed to sounding ‘forced’. Better production, overall mix and material than previous releases along with a more professional cover, this is their best effort to date. all accounts, this essentially makes them new kids on the block. No pun intended.
