You have more of a raspy sound as your “Ground Floor” character, banking-firm chief Remington Mansfield. Was that intended from the start? I heard Daniel Day-Lewis talking about this, with “Lincoln.” He said the first thing he wanted to find was the president’s voice, and I know what he meant.

The studio came to me during the pilot and said, “Do you need a voice doctor?” and I said, “No! This is the guy you’re going to get for, hopefully, 10 years.” And then they left me alone.

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE

DIDN T KNOW!

ABOUT THE FILM

COLUMNISTS

by Stan Robinson

STAN ROBINSON

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

BET, YOU

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insights of an insider. With more than 22 years of experience in media production, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes expertise to survey a film’s technical attributes and considers the challenges that had to be overcome in order to cinematically present a story. E-mail him at Movies@StanRobinson.org.

(In 2002, Steven Spielberg finally finished college after a 33-year hiatus. He turned in ‘Schindler’s List’ (1993) for his student film requirement.

‘Philomena’

Jason Statham plays a widowed ex-DEA agent who retires to a small town for the sake of his 10-year-old daughter (Izabela Vidovic). The only problem is he picked the wrong town. James Franco, Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth also star. (R - 100 minutes)

Steve Coogan plays a world-weary political journalist who picks up the story of a woman’s (Judi Dench) search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. (R - 94 minutes)

Stan: Admittedly an avid admirer of Jason Statham’s understated ‘everyman’ persona since ‘The Transporter’ films and a screenplay by Sylvester Stallone, ‘Homefront’ moves along at a nice brisk pace without losing sight of its underlying theme while providing excellent characterizations, whether they’re the ‘good guys’ or ‘the heavies’, for one ‘heck of a ride!’ Joseph: “Homefront” is as gripping as it is gritty. Granted, the film features some silly moments, but it also features some spectacular performances from its all-star cast in roles unlike you have ever seen them before and a terrific tension that builds to an action-packed finale whose sheer force alone will pin you to your seat.

Stan: Methodically paced as Steve Coogan’s journalist character is slowly drawn into the story he’s piecing together, so too are we, as ‘third eye’ viewers. When the revealed circumstances of the travesty of the event so many years ago and the fortitude of ‘Philomena’ with an exceptional performance by Judi Dench, left this reviewer stunned as I did not see the ending coming. Joseph: “Philomena” is an intellectually stimulating and emotionally stirring motion picture that challenges viewers with the true story of a woman - so eloquently portrayed by Judi Dench - who was the victim of a tragic injustice and yet has the experiential wisdom to know that if you are unable to forgive your persecutors then you will never be able to forgive yourself.

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

Randy Montgomery’s reactions reveal the emotional intuition of an average moviegoer. With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. E-mail him at Randyjay7694@yahoo.com.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Director Gary Fleder (‘Homefront’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“I think that one of the big themes is deciding who you are to your child. [Jason Statham’s character] is a guy with a past that was probably pretty intense with some violence and mayhem. He is a guy who clearly lived and thrived in that universe but has now given all of that up and is living this quiet life off the grid with his daughter. Then trouble finds him and he has got to decide who he is going to be. Is he going to be a guy who attracts violence and mayhem or a guy who doesn’t attract it and doesn’t want to be part of it?

Marlon Brando

“There is a very critical moment in the movie where he could have walked away from a situation where he is being embarrassed or whatever. But rather than walking away he lets it happen and, of course, that triggers this whole domino effect of bad behavior. But I am really intrigued by the notion of choices we make and I think that this movie is especially about a guy who decides what kind of man he is going to be to his daughter and to himself. “I am a dad to a 5-year-old girl and it really made me examine moment by moment what it would be like

to have a child in this situation. Basically, as parents, we want to protect our kids at all costs from everything. But the truth is you can’t. Ultimately, there is a certain level of control you don’t have. Every time your kid goes off to school or to camp or to the market or whatever, you are giving up control and I think that is part of life. So I think that this movie is examining that notion of this character who just wants to protect his child as he is grieving his wife her mom - and how he is going to survive and thrive in this situation.” - Gary Fleder

Best MoB Movies

By Jay BoBBin

“Bonnie and Clyde” (1967) Warren Beatty redefined his career, and largely gave one to Faye Dunaway, as producer and star of this stylistically legendary tale of mobsters in love and on the run. “The Godfather” (1972) You can’t do this list without this movie, director Francis Ford Coppola’s superb realization of Mario Puzo’s novel about the Corleone family, led by Marlon Brando as the don. And “Part II” stands on its own.

top Movies “Indecent Proposal” (1993): Redford takes an

image gamble as a tycoon who offers $1 million to a couple to sleep with the wife (Demi Moore). “Out of Africa” (1985): Sydney Pollack, Redford’s frequent collaborator, won an Oscar for directing him and Meryl Streep in this true love story. “Three Days of the Condor” (1975): Redford goes on the run as the lone survivor of an attack on a CIA subdivision in one of the best espionage thrillers of its era. “The Sting” (1973): Redford’s screen reunion with Newman, a clever tale of Depression-era hustlers, led to another best picture Oscar win.

RACING WITH A SHARK A SUITCASE AND $20

Taking a bite out of life, Robert Herjavec of the hugely popular ‘Shark Tank’ reveals his successes and motivations By Lynette Carrington MENTION THE ABC HIT SHOW “SHARK TANK” AND A HOST OF THINGS COME TO MIND — business dreams realized, entrepreneurial aspirations dashed or thoughts about the panel of wealthy and savvy business owners that make up the panel of “Shark Tank.” Robert Herjavec is one of the favorite of the sharks that sits in and listens as business owners and entrepreneurs pitch the panel of wealthy multimillionaires in a bid to get them to invest in their product or company. The “Shark Tank” panel of experts includes a diverse array of business owners/ entrepreneurs that have found success in a variety of companies and business ventures of their own, but Robert Herjavec has us captivated — hook, line and sinker. The self-made millionaire is one of the most successful entrepreneurs and businessmen in all of North America. With his parents, he landed in Canada after fleeing communism in the former Yugoslavia when he was 8 years old. The first-generation immigrant had his most humble beginnings delivering newspapers, waiting on tables and then eventually launching his own computer company from his home. Fast forward a few decades and Robert Herjavec has achieved amazing success and now owns one of the most successful cyber security companies in the world. His company, The Herjavec Group, has built and sold several companies, including companies sold off to AT&T and Nokia. He has amassed a net worth of more than $100 million and is frequently called upon as an expert on matters of business advice and motivation. His two books on the subject, Driven and the latest release, The Will to Win, are both best sellers in Canada and are published by HarperCollins. Arizona Sports & Lifestyle Magazine considers Herjavec a brilliant business mind and we are thrilled to be swimming with this Shark!

It’s a story out of a movie. The Herjavec family sought freedom from communist oppression and showed up in Canada with not much more than a dream and determination. “I came here on a boat with a suitcase and 20 bucks and we lived in someone’s basement for a year. When you go from that to where I am today, it is hard not to wake up every day with a certain sense of wonder. I am just so excited about the possibilities in life,” stated Robert Herjavec. In an ocean filled with big business ego, this humility is refreshing. Herjavec recounts one of the most vivid stories from his childhood that helped

THE FEEDING FRENZY

DRIVEN

ABC’s “Shark Tank” will soon be heading into its fifth season, and the feeding frenzy in the tank can be fierce as the Sharks battle to get a piece of the business action. “I think we are all different. Some of the Sharks have larger egos. Some also have a great deal of money and are OK with throwing it away. I’m not naming any names like Kevin (O’Leary) and Mark (Cuban) ... but I definitely think we’re all different. I can also say that, in spite of these differences, we all respect each other,” stated Herjavec with a good-natured jab.

Another passion of Herjavec’s is car racing, and he races in the Ferrari Challenge. “I’ve always loved cars and I love car racing. Car racing for me is a lot like business. You have to go 100 miles an hour, or in our case sometimes 200 miles an hour and stay absolutely clearly laser-like focused and calm,” he explained. He’s a relative newbie on the racing scene, but is making great strides in the sport with his wife and kids cheering him on at the finish line. “They’re very nervous about it, but they also know that it’s part of what makes me who I am. I’m pretty good at it. I won five races last year and I was also the Rookie of the Year. So I think that gives them a little bit of comfort. They know my desire to be with them is greater than my desire to win a race. So I try not to do anything stupid on the track,” Herjavec said.

Herjavec’s calm demeanor and willingness to mull over the details presented to him by the show’s guests reveal his warm character. He is the Shark that sits back and takes in the whole situation, carefully balancing potential monetary risk with the drive, work ethic and passion that is conveyed to him by the person seeking money. “My expectation when I make an investment is to get my money back,”

THE WILL TO WIN Herjavec’s second book, The Will to Win, just debuted a few short weeks ago. It immediately became a best seller. “It kind of picks up at a point where you’ve got a little bit of success and how you keep that going. I think one of the things I’ve learned is that my vision of success has really changed over time,” Herjavec noted. “I’ve had a fantastic opportunity to meet a lot of very successful people including Oprah and George St. Pierre [the UFC fighter] and all kinds of people from different fields. I drive them nuts because I’m always asking them, ‘What makes you tick? When you wake up, what keeps you going?’ So we’re sharing a lot of those kinds of lessons,” said Herjavec. The Will to Win is available through the Canadian Amazon site at www.Amazon.ca.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF LUCAS SCARFONE set him on his course. At 12 years old, he returned from school after being bullied by some classmates. Barely speaking English and growing tired of being poor, he lamented to his mother about his horrible day and his awful life. His father came home, listening intently as young Robert bemoaned his situation. Herjavec recounted his father’s words, “Never complain. All you’re ever owed in life is an opportunity.” After those words of wisdom, he then walked away. Said Herjavec, “It’s funny, but it really stuck with me, and I am not a good guy to complain to. I just think all of us — Americans, Canadians, Europeans — often times we take things for granted and we feel like the world owes us something … and the world owes us nothing but an opportunity.” The words of Herjavec’s father are especially poignant since he used to walk miles to work to save on bus fare in an effort to get his family a nicer apartment.

Herjavec said. And he is careful with his pennies, literally. To this day, when he walks down the street and sees change on the ground, he hears the voice of his mother urging him to see the value in taking the time to pick up that money. This Shark’s most lucrative catch to date (from the show) has been “Chord Buddy”— the world’s best guitar-learning system. “I think it’s either the best investment that’s ever been made on ‘Shark Tank’ or right up there. In a year and a half, we’ve gone from zero sales to well over 3 million dollars. We bought a factory in Alabama and we employ 20 people. But it’s not my favorite deal just because of the money, and money is always good, but the entrepreneur Travis (Perry) is a great guy. I love when good things happen to good people … and he is good people,” explained Herjavec.

ARIZONA DREAMING Will Arizona soon be getting its very own Shark? Could be! “I’m looking to buy a house in Arizona. I love Arizona. I have a house in Miami and I have for 15 years, but before we bought that house, I wanted to buy in Arizona,” noted Herjavec. He cites Tucson as one of his favorite areas, and he recently looked at some of the places up in the mountains with a view over Phoenix. “It’s gorgeous out there, just gorgeous. And Scottsdale? I love that area! I love the desert,” Herjavec said. For more great sports and lifestyle info, read AZ Sports & Lifestyle Magazine. www.AZSAL.com

MACK NEWTON ON… Thanksgiving Today I remember as a very young boy being reminded by my Great-Grandma that I should be grateful for all the good things that I had in my life. She made sure we said grace before meals, made sure I said my prayers before bedtime and to be thankful for our food, our good health, a warm bed, be thankful for her and all the other things that I sometimes took for granted. So, needless to say, Thanksgiving was an extremely important holiday in our household. It was a day when I was given a pencil and paper and told to make a list of all the things I was thankful for in my life. So, I grew up thinking of Thanksgiving as a special day when people actually developed an attitude of gratitude and givethanks for life and loves and health and abundance and all the other stuff that makes life grand. I have no idea how I got away from that.

Seek Adventure at the Phoenix Rock Gym

Arizona’s Largest & Best Indoor Climbing Gym Since 1992

Some years later I was able to place the “attitude of gratitude” into a totally different perspective. In 1995 I met a wonderful lady named Mary Hook. Her hip replacement was not working and she came to me to fix it. She wanted me to do for her what I had done for Cardinal’s quarterback Neil Lomax. Upon examination, I determined that I couldn’t fix it and it had to be revised. She didn’t want to revise it. She just didn’t and I couldn’t talk her into it. She said she’s been through way too much pain and discomfort getting it in the first place and she in no way wanted to go through it again. Long story…short version, after lots of convincing from Mary, I agreed to try and, lo and behold, I was able to rehab her hip and eliminate the pain, therefore making further surgery unnecessary. Mary Hook was thankful beyond description. She and her husband, Jack, invited me to share Thanksgiving with them that year. I accepted and spent every Thanksgiving with them for the next five years. That first year, after the traditional meal had been served and everything put away, everyone was invited into the back yard and

Then…Mary Hook spoke. In spite of all she’d been through that year, she was the most thankful of all present. But when she mentioned me as someone she was most thankful for, I was emotionally yanked back through 25 years of pain and I learned at that moment that being thankful has powerful healing properties. A few moments later, I could hear my own voice giving thanks like I never had done before for so many wonderful things in my life that I could now see and feel because I was no longer confused and focused on the things that had not or were not working in my life. Today, Thanksgiving is generally recognized more for being the holiday that signals the serious beginning of the Christmas holiday shopping season as much as anything else. In addition, it’s a day when we have given ourselves permission to be completely gluttonous with a clear conscious. They say…”It’s only one day…how can that hurt?” Some people spend the rest of the year trying to recover from the gluttony of that one day. But is this the true spirit of Thanksgiving? I mean, where folks spend their time complaining that nothing is working for them, that there’s never enough money, nobody loves them, they’ve got rotten jobs and life is tough? No, it’s not! Without being thankful, it’s as if people are magnetized to get more of the same. Thanksgiving is a blessing. It’s a day that allows us to choose gratitude. Thanksgiving says: “No matter what happens, choose gratitude. If everything goes your way, choose gratitude. If everything just falls apart, choose gratitude.” I am, amongst all people most richly blessed and for that, I am truly grateful. Happy Thanksgiving! Everyone just stood quietly for what seemed to me a very long time until finally a young girl spoke up and started listing all the things she was thankful for in her life. It was very moving. Then, one after the other, each person in the circle starting giving thanks out loud for their many blessings. I just stood there, moved to tears…my heart opening…listening to all, young and old, voice their thanks for everyone to hear. It was very powerful…literally life changing.

REPEAL DAY Eighteenth Amendment has come to pass. There is not less drunkenness in the Republic, but more. There is not less crime, but more. There is not less insanity, but more. The cost of government is not smaller, but vastly greater. Respect for law has not increased, but diminished.

And while Prohibition may not have been responsible for The Great Depression, it certainly played its part in making the Depression worse. Between costs of enforcement and lost tax revenue it is estimated that Prohibition cost the country around a billion dollars during the period from the late 1920’s until Repeal. Money that could have helped drastically with needed services during that time. The entire thirteen years of Prohibition cost the United States about $11,000,000,000 dollars in lost tax revenue and another $400,000,000 in enforcement costs.

January 16th, 1919 was the beginning of a dark period in American history that started with the ratification of the 18th Amendment and didn’t end for thirteen years with the ratification of the 21st Amendment on December 5th, 1933. This era became known as Prohibition and saw the outlawing of all alcoholic beverages in the United States. Since we just celebrated what has become known as Repeal Day, let’s examine that time a little more closely.

and served to provide numerous opportunities for organized crime to gain footholds as well as creating a general unhappiness with the Federal Government. The proponents of prohibition had believed that banning alcoholic beverages would reduce or even eliminate many social problems, particularly drunkenness, crime, mental illness, and poverty. In 1925, journalist H.L. Mencken believed the opposite to be true:

The 18th Amendment is the only Constitutional Amendment to ever be repealed and it signified the end of what was called The Noble Experiment by supporters of Prohibition. In reality it was harmful to the country

Five years of Prohibition have had, at least, this one benign effect: they have completely disposed of all the favorite arguments of the Prohibitionists. None of the great boons and usufructs that were to follow the passage of the

The chaos created by Prohibition and the overwhelming desire of the American public to consume adult beverages made the time ripe for the incredible growth of organized crime. Serving as retail distribution channels and, in many cases production as well, cities were almost taken over by organized crime groups. But it was not all the mob’s doing, most of the production and trafficking was still done by ordinary citizens looking to make money and provide a service for their fellow Americans. Much of it was also done by Canadian interests. Production of spirits, wine and beer was still legal in Canada and a quick bootlegging run across the border could net these companies a nice profit. Prohibition brought us many terms used today. For instance, the term speakeasy is said to come from

bartenders telling patrons to “speak easy” when ordering so as not to be overheard some 30 years before prohibition. While the speakeasy was often funded by organized crime and could be very elaborate and upscale, the “blind pig” was a dive for the less desirable drinker. It should be noted that one of Russian River Brewing’s flagship brands is Blind Pig IPA. The term “The Real McCoy” also came out of this era. It’s attributed to Captain William S. McCoy who facilitated most of the rum running via ships during prohibition and would never water down his imports, making his the “real” thing.

When it became evident that Prohibition had failed, as many movements that ignore the will of the people do, a politician named Franklin D. Roosevelt ran for president on a platform that included the repeal of the 18th Amendment. Soon-to-be President Roosevelt also had a plan to get us out of The Depression and was easily elected. His “New Deal” became a major turning point for the United States. On December 5th, 1933 the 21st Amendment was accepted by the state of Utah, a state not normally thought of as being particularly supportive of alcohol, and with that vote the required 75% of states required for ratification was reached and the Amendment became law. However, prior to that the Cullen-Harrison act was signed into law by President Roosevelt. This act allowed for production and sale of beer of no more than 3.2% alcohol by weight (4.0% if using the more common alcohol by volume measurement) and beer returned to the country in April of 1933. Interesting fact... The first legal bottle of beer produced by Washington’s Abner Drury Brewery CONTINUED ON 34...

...CONTINUED FROM 32 was delivered to President Roosevelt at the White House shortly after midnight on April 14, 1933 and stored in the President’s pantry because he was still asleep. Here are some other interesting facts about Prohibition and its repeal. Dewar’s Scotch - the first legal whisky to arrive in the U.S. - hit New York’s South Street Seaport docks the moment the law was put into action. Joseph Kennedy, Sr. (JFK’s father) happened to be the US agent for the brand. Now, a lot of people have suggested that Joseph Kennedy was a bootlegger, which he may or may not have been. But what he really was, was the owner of a company named Somerset Importers. Somerset owned the exclusive rights to import Dewar’s

Scotch and Gordon’s Gin, and right before Repeal, Somerset stocked up. Once Prohibition was over, they sold the premium liquors for a hefty profit, and Joe was a rich man.The umbrella becomes a clever symbol of the postprohibition era. Ironically with rain inside the umbrella for many wet days to come.To honor the repeal of the 21st amendment many celebrations begin at 9:00pm or the 21st hour. Finally, many Repeal Day hosts insist the first drink of the evening be non-alcoholic beverage to remind everyone of the dry days of prohibition. You still have time to plan your repeal party. Pick out something special and invite a few friends over for a special drink. Bar owners – make sure you are offering up a toast to the 21st Amendment at your establishment.

By “King” James Swann Hello again beer lovers, today I’d like to tell you about a little known group made up of brewers from all over the state, The Arizona Brewer’s Guild. They go about their business rather quietly but play an important role in how the rules and regulations concerning the sales of local beer affect all of us and our pocket books. The group has always been a sort of secret society carrying an air of almost Free Mason clandestine mystery. Sounds silly but it’s true as most everyday employees in our local pubs could not tell you what this group’s directives are. As an example I was recently asked by George Hancock, owner of Phoenix Ale if my new brewery The Perch would be joining this covert operation. My response was simply: “what’s the point?” Even I had absolutely no idea what these guys were actually doing. There were even rumours of dissension in the ranks as many of the breweries and pubs in Tucson reportedly began to close ranks and circle the wagons.

The Arizona Brewer’s Guild UNMASKED!

Enter Rob Fulmer, current president of The Arizona Society of Home Brewers and newly hired Executive Director of the Guild. It is now Rob’s full time job educate Arizonan’s on what the guild does and why it’s important in communities all over Arizona. Could I have been a catalyst for this action? Who knows, but what I can tell you is they got the right man. Count on seeing Rob at your local brewery, beer events and in the pubs talking to owners, managers, media and the population about what the guild is doing and what it all means. I was staggered by what he had to say and can now report that great things are coming. Who Knew? Until next week, Cheers!

Michigan State Grad Wins $8.36 Million He said he would win the event back in July when he made it to the final table, and 23-year old Ryan Riess is a man of his word after taking down the world’s largest poker tournament in Las Vegas, becoming the World Series of Poker Main Event champion and the sport’s reigning champion. The trend of crowning a young twenty-something poker professional at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) continues as Riess outlasted a field of 6,352 players who each ponied up $10,000 for the chance to win poker’s most prestigious tournament late this evening at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, a Caesars Entertainment Property The event created a $59.7 million total prize pool with Riess taking home the first place prize of $8,361,570 and the richest prize in all of sports, the $500,000 WSOP gold bracelet.

Riess, from East Lansing, Michigan, becomes the sixth consecutive player under the age of 25 to capture poker’s top crown. He also becomes the sixth consecutive poker professional to win the title. This is the third time a player from Michigan has won the event, the most recent being Joe Cada of Shelby Township in 2009. Poker Hall of Famer and Grand Rapid’s Tom McEvoy was first to accomplish the feat in 1983. Riess graduated with a business degree from Michigan State last December and burst onto the poker scene just one year ago in October, 2012 when he finished runner up in a WSOP Circuit event at Horseshoe Hammond in Indiana, winning $239,063 after being coaxed to participate by a friend. It was Riess’ first-ever live poker tournament. This marked Riess’ first time to ever play in the WSOP Main Event. “This is a dream come true,” said Riess after his impressive victory. “Ever since I saw Chris Moneymaker win this event in 2003 I knew it was something I wanted to experience too. I’m

surprised it came so quickly.” The 2013 Main Event began in July. As has been the custom in the past six years, play was suspended when the tournament reached its final table comprised of nine participants. Play resumed Monday afternoon; after more than eight hours of competition the field of nine remaining players was narrowed to two: Jay Farber, 29, of Las Vegas, an amateur poker player and VIP nightclub host; and professional poker player Riess, 23, of East Lansing, Michigan.

Riess now has $8,658,488 in career WSOP earnings, which moves him into tenth place on the WSOP all-time money list. Tuesday’s WSOP action was carried with a 15-minute delay on ESPN; Monday’s play was covered with a 15-minute delay on ESPN2. (The delay is per gaming regulations to protect the integrity of play.) The 2013 WSOP attracted a record 79,471 participants from 107 countries in a total of 62 events, generating a prize pool of more than $197 million.

Heads-up play began Tuesday evening and lasted more than three hours before we crowned our new champion. Farber was eliminated in second place, winning $5,174,357. A total of 648 players cashed in this year’s WSOP Main Event. Players from 83 different nations and ages ranging from 21 to 92 years old competed in the WSOP Main Event, including dozens of celebrities from the sports and entertainment world. But Riess was able to outlast all 6,351 of them, despite his first-ever attempt in this event.

AZ Wine Lifestyle Winter 2013 Publishers’ Letter Excerpt

hoto Credit Dian Clark Written by Rhonni Moffitt, publisher of AZ Wine Lifestyle Our recently released Winter 2013 issue of AZ Wine Lifestyle closes out our sixth year of publishing the magazine. It’s been a fun, yet bumpy and wild ride! It is with a very heavy heart, though, to inform you that this will be the last issue of the print publication. After much soul searching, financial planning and deep thought, Josh and I have had to make the decision to close the magazine. As the magazine has grown, the financial viability hasn’t changed, unfortunately, and in some ways has become even more difficult to sustain.

Also Makes a Fun & Unique Gift

We will still run our website, including the wine country information, the event calendar and blog updates, and hope to have some guest contributors to keep the information fun, new and resourceful. The weekly newsletter will remain in operation, as well, to keep our readers informed of important wine-related happenings around the state. After years of publishing Arizona Vines & Wines, and then more recently AZ Wine Lifestyle, we’ve become entrenched in the burgeoning Arizona wine industry, feeling like part of the family to the winemakers, tasting room workers, vineyard managers, wine store and bar owners, and, of course, the Arizona wine supporters and fans.

Without the support of the wine industry, this publication wouldn’t have lasted this long. I’ve loved watching the growth of the industry, the ups and downs (mostly ups), your personal achievements—locally and nationally— and seeing the acceptance of what was, when we started, a relatively unknown industry. I hope we can take a small part of the credit in the fact that we helped spread the gospel. We want to thank all of you who have supported us over the years! Our partnership with AZ Weekly has been a tremendous opportunity to help spread the word about our state’s wine industry happenings and events, and we hope we have helped spark readers to explore all that Arizona has to offer! We aren’t saying goodbye, because we’re confident that we’ll see you all around, whether it’s at a tasting room, wine club event, wine dinner or just hanging at a wine bar… wine brings people together, makes our hearts full of love and laughter, and helps create bonds that cannot be broken. Please continue to visit our website at AZWineLifestyle.com and sign up for our weekly newsletter “The Grapevine.” Cheers! -- Josh and Rhonni Moffitt, publishers, AZ Wine Lifestyle Visit AZWineLifestyle.com to view the full letter in the Winter 2013 digital edition.

There were 12.4 million tickets sold for Broadway shows in 2012. To save costs, the body of Shakespeare’s friend and fellow dramatist, Ben Jonson, was buried standing up in Westminster Abbey, London in 1637.

The average Broadway ticket for a show is $95.

In order to qualify for Broadway theatre status, a theatre must have 500 seats, be located between 40th St. to 54th St., and from West of 6th Ave. to East of Eighth Ave., including Times Square.

P.T Barnum produced the first Broadway show in 1870.

Annie is based on Harold Gray’s comic strip Little Orphan Annie, which debuted in 1924.

Mythbusters tested whether it was possible to get your tongue truly stuck on a piece of cold metal, as in the famous scene from “A Christmas Story”. And it is.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic The Phantom of the Opera is the longest running Broadway show of all time. It has surpassed an incredible 10,000 performances. The movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” was mentioned in an FBI file in 1947, when an analyst passed along the concern that the film was an obvious attempt to discredit bankers, a “common trick used by Communists.”

Luke Mitchell appreciates that he has landed roles far more easily than most actors. Mitchell, who plays John Young in The CW’s “The Tomorrow People,” airing Wednesdays, had planned on becoming a pro tennis player. This wasn’t just a kid’s dream in the “I want to be a cowboy or astronaut” category. Mitchell played tennis competitively and comes from a very athletic family. His brother, Ben, is a world-ranked tennis player. When Mitchell quit, he haphazardly found acting. “I never did drama at school,” Mitchell says in his native Australian accent. “I did it for one term, when it was compulsory, and I hated it. Tennis was the main thing in my life, and I was not open to anything else. When I removed tennis from the equation, I didn’t know who I was.” Mitchell, who describes himself as shy, retains the athlete’s determination to push himself out of his comfort zone. “I stumbled onto an acting class one day, and it scared the absolute s... out of me,” he says. “I was petrified, and I had to do cold reads and improvise and with people who had done this before, and I had never done it. At the end I drove home, and it was such a freeing feeling that was a bit of a rush.” He recalls thinking this would be a good challenge, and he moved to Melbourne to find work. Within a month he landed a gig on a soap, which led to an independent film, and then a role on an established Australian hit. Mitchell moved again for work, this time to Sydney, and after that panned out, he thought he would try Los Angeles. “I did two weeks of auditions,” he says. “Compared to what most people go through, it is next to nothing. I had no expectations.” Birth date: April 17, 1985 Hometown: Gold Coast, Australia Credits: The Australian shows “Neighbours,” “Just Add Water,” and “Home and Away” Wife: Actress Rebecca Breeds Other jobs: Coached tennis and worked in the pro store. And after working on a hit show, he took a job in a bowling alley, befriended the owner and was set to work. That day, his agent called, saying Mitchell landed a starring role in “Home and Away.” He felt awful about canceling on the bowling alley owner. “I called him I that night,” he says. “I couldn’t do it face to face. It was too hard.”

Kat Living in the hipster capital of Dennings Williamsburg, Brooklyn, requires a certain (left) and approach to fashion. And one of the great Beth Behrs aspects of “2 Broke Girls,” a CBS Monday comedy, is that the two main characters flout typical hipster fashion rules, which, in the required irony of hipster-dom, makes them even more fashionable. Set in a diner, the characters wear uniforms, and not even anything vaguely modern, but polyester that looks as if it would survive an atomic blast. “The uniform has gone through several lives,” says Kat Dennings, who plays Max. “The first season was sort of getting it together. Then it became smaller and tighter and plunging. And maybe I lost some weight. It looks a little different. It has just been taken in to accommodate my body changing a little.

Left-handedness is also known as “sinistrality” because left-handed people were once thought to be demons. 58

Stephen Moyer stars in “The Sound of Music Live!” Thursday on NBC. “The Sound of Music Live!” is just that. It’s decidedly not a remake of the 1965 movie. Carrie Underwood is not trying to be Julie Andrews, nor is Stephen Moyer trying to be Christopher Plummer. No one is making that mistake. Rather, NBC’s three-hour production on Thursday, Dec. 5, is intended as an event, the sort for which people once gathered around a television instead of catching up with on their phones. Underwood, like most folks, grew up watching the movie.

“I don’t think I could remember the first time I saw it,” she says on a break from rehearsals. Tucked away in a ballet studio in lower Manhattan, the cast worked for four weeks before heading out to a Long Island set to rehearse another two weeks until the big day. Wearing hot pink leggings, a gray sweatshirt and green sneakers, but in full makeup because of a morning talk show appearance, Underwood smiles as she says, “This was one of my mom and dad’s first dates. My mom is coming up in a few weeks, and she is incredibly excited.”

“It’s been lovely, treating this like a proper show,” Moyer says, sprawling on a club chair. It’s been 18 years since he did a musical. Though “a massive Christopher Plummer fan,” Moyer says, “I will try to make myself different. I don’t think he’s (Captain von Trapp) very likable in the beginning. I want him to be cold and broken. He’s retreated into being an officer and a captain of the fleet. His way of controlling everything is to have it be neat and tidy, and everything is until this little firebrand arrives.”
