This show is woven together with a cast of characters you’ll cherish for the holidays! Director Robert Kolby Harper’s eye for comedy and humor is brightest with a cast from “spelling bee heaven!” There are many favorites to cheer here with Marcy, Mitch, Rona, Logainne, Chip, Olive, Leaf, Barfee and Panch all delivering the greatest moments in spelling bee history! Get your tickets now for this fabulously funny show before “The Last Goodbye!” Through December 6th at Phoenix Theatre. Tickets 602-254-2151 or online at PhoenixTheatre.com GEORGE IS DEAD at the Herberger Theater Center Arizona Theatre Company’s new production of the Elaine May comedy GEORGE IS DEAD opened this past weekend in downtown Phoenix. But this production is anything but dead. Set in present day New York, this story is alive with wit and sarcasm concerning the lives of George and Doreen Whittlesey. Starring in dramatic fashion is Marlo Thomas, as the dependent and desperate Doreen. She leaves no question as to who is in control and out of touch. Her comedic timing and delivery with Julia Brothers as Carla Kern, her ex-nannies daughter, is wonderful! Complementing our storyline is Don Murray as George, Carmen Lacivita as Freddie the Driver, and Reese Madigan as Michael Kern. Through December 6th at the Herberger Theater. Tickets 602-256-6995 or ArizonaTheatre.org JUNIE B IN JINGLE BELLS, BATMAN SMELLS Childsplay opened the holiday season with the whimsical and imaginative JUNIE B in JINGLE BELLS, BATMAN SMELLS by Allison Gregory at the Tempe Center for Performing Arts. The fun begins with Junie and her favorite friend May, starring in the school play. The adventure continues through holiday gift giving time, where Junie must find a way to understand May. This is a touching and humorous story made for the whole family to enjoy! Director David Saar has crafted the perfect holiday surprise with Katie McFadzen as Junie, Debra Stevens as May, along with the rest of Mr. Scary’s exuberant class- Herb, Lucille, Jose and Sheldon! Through December 27th at the Tempe Center. Tickets 480-350-2822 or Childsplayaz.org. KUDOS…to an incredible Ballet Arizona production of SWAN LAKE! The NUTCRACKER in December should be fantastic! “Precious”, Oscar® bound! Interview/Review by Stan Robinson

“Precious” is one of those smaller, independent films that slowly, and certainly surely, has made its way through film festivals and screenings, and emerged as one of ‘the’ talked about movies of the year. Now in general release, there’s Oscar® ‘buzz’ for director Lee Daniels and first time actress Gabourey ‘Gabby’ Sidibe who stars as Precious, an overweight, illiterate Harlem teen who’s pregnant with her second child, and is invited to enroll in an alternative school in the hope that her life can head in a new

There’s more on the movie “Precious” and the ensemble cast of seasoned actors, music artists Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz with featured roles, and my conversation with Gabourey ‘Gabby’ Sidibe at www.ScreenScene.org Starring Gabourey ‘Gabby’ Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Sherri Shepherd, and Lenny Kravitz. Directed by Lee Daniels; written by Geoffrey Fletcher; Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire. Lionsgate release. Rated R for child abuse including sexual assault, and pervasive language. “The Road”, a powerful story of survival… Review by Stan Robinson

It’s a post-apocalyptic world as a father and his young son make their way through the residue of what was once our world, to the coastal shore in the hope of finding water and a livable place. As they continue their journey through cold, freezing

“Old Dogs”, light hearted look at friends & children!

Review by Stan Robinson

On the verge of the biggest business deal of their lives for their sports marketing firm, 30 year best friends (John Travolta and Robin Williams) have their lives turned upside down. The mayhem begins when to their extreme surprise, they are unexpectedly charged with the care of six-year-old twins for two weeks while still trying to hold it together to make the final presentation in Japan! There’s more of my full review at www. ScreenScene.org Starring John Travolta, Robin Williams, Kelly Preston, Conner Rayburn, Ella Bleu Travolta, Lori Loughlin, Seth Green, Bernie Mac, Matt Dillon, Sab Shimono and Ann-Margret.

“Fantastic Mr. Fox”, animated story mirrors reality! Review by Stan Robinson

“Fantastic Mr. Fox”, the story of an animated character, takes us on a visit with a person that many of us know in our real world of human lives! Now in his later family years, Mr. Fox (voiced by George Clooney) although successful in his own right, can’t quite give up his basic instincts. He regularly goes on nightly raids to a near by chicken manufacturing plant and helps himself to the product! All out war is declared, by the human farmers, as they make it a mission to outwit Mr. Fox and his fellow partners in crime! You can read my full review at www.ScreenScene. org Featuring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Wallace Wolodarsky, Eric Chase Anderson, Michael Gambon, Willem Dafoe, Owen Wilson, Jarvis Cocker, and Wes Anderson.

Directed by Walt Becker; written by David Diamond & David Weissman. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures release. Rated PG for some mild rude humor. Runtime: 88 minutes.

“Ninja Assassin”, more than action driven! Review by Stan Robinson

After the merciless execution of his friend, a trained assassin Raizo (Rain) breaks free of the secret society known as The Clan to which they both belong. With the realization of contract assassinations for hire, he joins forces with Europol agent (Naomie Harris) in a deadly game of cat and mouse to bring down the elusive clan. There’s more of my review at www.ScreenScene. org Starring Rain, Naomie Harris, Sung Kang, Randall Duk Kim, Jonathan Chan-Pensley, Yuki Iwamoto, Ill-Young Kim, Ben Miles, Stephen Marcus, and Linh Dan Pham. Directed by James McTeigue; Written by Matthew Sand & J. Michael Straczynski; Warner Bros. Pictures release. Rated R for strong bloody stylized violence throughout, and language. Runtime: 99 minutes.

Twilight: New Moon’s Powerful Volturi By Randy Montgomery

There was considerable buzz around the opening of Twilight last year, but no one could have imagined the enormous success and fan support the film would receive. The movie, based on the vampire romance series of novels by Valley resident Stephenie Meyer grossed nearly $193 million during its theatrical run; a huge amount of money for a somewhat indie film from Summit Entertainment, a relatively new film studio. To promote the release, the film’s cast circled the country doing meet and greet stops at malls to invigorate fans. An appearance by three of the film’s stars at Scottsdale Fashion Square drew thousands, all hoping to catch a glimpse at who would be playing their favorite characters. The same tour came to Scottsdale once again two weeks ago to promote The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the second story in the series and fans flocked once again. This time fans would meet two “Vampire Royalty”… or, in Twilight lingo… “The Volturi.” Demetri (Charlie Bewley) and Felix (Daniel Cudmore) are two of The Volturi. The Volturi are “an organized coven of vampires that enforce the laws of the vampire world. They seek out and invite those vampires with special powers to join their family. They are the largest group of and most powerful vampires.” Bewley and Cudmore sat down with members of the local media to discuss fan reaction to their appearances and the popularity of the series. Their press day in Scottsdale came prior to the recordbreaking box office opening weekend in which The Twilight Saga: New Moon raked in over $140 million at the U.S. Box Office alone. That unbelievable total places The Twilight Saga: New Moon in the Top 5 all-time biggest opening weekends ever, behind The Dark Knight and SpiderMan 3 and slightly ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Shrek the Third. Question: What is your reaction to the fan pandemonium surrounding the film? Cudmore: You see all these people passionate about these great books and our characters. (At the Scottsdale Fashion Square appearance) this little girl was crying when she met us. I had never experienced that from someone for a role that I played. It’s hugely flattering that someone is that emotionally charged AZWeeklyMagazine.com

weather conditions, encounters with other survivors, some friendly, some not, their relationship deepens as they learn from each other. Performances by Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings trilogy) and Kodi Smit-McPhee as father and son, deliver Oscar® caliber portrayals! You can read my full review at www.ScreenScene. org

Bewley: From a first real project, it’s great to be involved in because there is so much extra curricular activities involved with it. This is such a phenomenal success and everyone wants to be a vampire right now. It’s such a wonderful thing to be involved in. I’m a bad ass vampire! Question: Give us a brief background on who your characters are and how they are involved in the story. Bewley: (Edward Cullen) goes out and very selfishly, tries to expose himself. He goes to The Volturi and says he wants to be killed. He thinks that Bella has committed suicide. They are the only people that can kill him. When they say no because they want his powers, he goes out and says, “OK then, I am going to screw the whole vampire kingdom.” What Edward Cullen does by exposing himself puts everyone in jeopardy. We (The Volturi) make and enforce the laws and if anyone breaks them, we take them in for questioning. Question: What are your specific powers and roles? Bewley: (Demetri) is a tracker… which makes me a formidable threat. Demetri gets the standard skill set of being mentally strong, fast, aesthetically pleasing and highly dangerous. He also has a sense of charm which draws people into a false sense of security. Cudmore: In the Twilight world, each vampire is given an extra power, whether it be tracking ability, mind power or the ability to read thoughts. My character (Felix) isn’t really given a specific power except for the fact that he is brutally vicious and strong. He doesn’t really have a vampire that is at his level and he knows this. He has fun tearing apart other vampires. He knows what he can do and enjoys that ability and heightened strength. November 26th - December 2nd, 2009

THE HOTTEST MUSICAL ‘MUST-HAVE’ THIS HOLIDAY SEASON No video games or guitar hero for junior this holiday season…it’s time to jam with the Beamz and find the Mozart living in all of us! Be among the first on your block to own the Beamz and unleash your musical expression.

Charities and other organizations continually inquire about the Beamz as a silent auction item or give away for an upcoming event. Keeping music as the top priority and focusing on music in the schools is very important to everyone who is behind the Beamz. Beamz Board member, Tommy Gardner explains how the Beamz family is giving back to music education. “We have established a Beamz Foundation in order to respond to the many requests for donated items. As you might imagine, our product is central to music education----and also as you might imagine school funding is unfortunately short in these vital areas. We found by establishing an entity to assist in placing instruments in such areas we could do a better job administering our core music mission.” Beamz is a perfect gift for amateur musicians, musically inclined kids, music gamers who enjoy Rock Band and Guitar Hero, young children and parents with young children, professional musicians, mobile entertainers, DJ’s and it’s only $199.95! Whether your musical style is rock, blues, club, hip-hop or classical, the Beamz can provide it all. Create, record and share your original compositions with family and friends. Be the band, explore and play diverse music styles and always sound good! With the Beamz, you can NEVER play a bad note.

Breaking laser beams and literally playing the light is fun – and provides players a new way to create great music, says Riopelle. “If you can wave your hands, you can create music with the Beamz…” Deborah Porterfield, Gannett News Service. People react in ‘awe’ the first time they witness the Beamz uniqueness. “Beamz is a completely new musical instrument concept that anyone can play, whether you’re an experienced musician or a complete novice,” Music Trades. Kids go crazy playing the Beamz! Chad Criswell of MusicEdMagic adds, “It is a lot of fun to play and kids are drawn to it like flies to a bright light bulb.” Eight year old, Tony Cipriano recently brought the Beamz to his second grade class for “Show and Tell” and said his class had never seen anything like it. “Everyone in my class wanted to keep playing the Beamz and come over after school for a play date so

A CLOSER LOOK AT BEAMZ INTERACTIVE A Leader in Interactive Music Beamz interactive music compositions are creative, dynamic and spontaneous. These compositions are harmoniously designed and structured for players to perform interactive music with limitless possibilities. Players are inspired to interact with the Beamz songs and create unique sounds different from any other type of instrument. The Technology The Beamz product has six laser triggers and two button-controlled triggers that activate 100+ instruments, chords, music clips, sounds effects and rhythms. Each laser is programmed to trigger these different melodies, sounds or instruments. When a beam is broken, the Beamz player software program releases a musical sound or expression that is always harmonious to the other sounds so the music is always on key and sounds good. The backbone of the Beamz technology includes extensive interactive music software as well as the laser based controller technology. Beamz intellectual property includes multiple

The Night Owl If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE So was your Thanksgiving? Did you have a little bit of that Jell-o mold dish thingy that sort of looks like foam that is made only for holidays, but especially prominent on Thanksgiving? I didn’t; I’ve passed on that shizzle every year of my life. Am I missing something? Foamy Jell-o aside, let’s move on to find out what is happening in and around the Valley. For all that happened, is happening and will happen; read on. Tis’ the Season for Drinking and Riding: The season of holiday parties, bad sweaters, and spiked festive drinks is here, which means that all responsible Night Owls are on the hunt for a reliable, if not fun, designated driver. I refuse to endure another holiday party sober, or wake up stranded, carless, and hung over. This year I’m going to use a designated driver service like Drunk Drivers and Arizona Ride Home, to pick me up and get me and my vehicle home safely. Just in time for the libation filled holiday season, Drunk Drivers, a 24/7 East Valley designated driver service, will begin service December 1. A driver will arrive at your drinking destination of choice, and drive you and your car home for a fee of $30, plus charge an additional $2.50 per mile. If you’re traveling with a group, they will even let your friends pile in as long as there are enough seat belts for everyone. For Night Owls living outside of the East Valley, you can also drunk dial Arizona Ride Home to come get you any Friday and Saturday night from 8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Servicing all parts of the Valley, Arizona Ride Home will pick-up and drop off you, anybody else you’re going home with, and your car within a 10 mile radius of your location for only $35, each additional mile is only $1.50 up to 20 miles. To hitch a ride visit www.thedrunkdrivers.com or www.azridehome.com. Winter Cocktails: Now that you have your designated driver situation all worked out it’s time to head over to the Camelback Inn, a JW Marriott Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, which will be featuring three red-hued holiday cocktails at the resort’s BLT Steak Camelback restaurant. You have all season to try the Winter Strawberry Crush Cosmo, Cranberry Spice Margarita and the Red Delicious. As a margarita lover, I can’t wait to sip the Cranberry Spice Margarita, a sweetly puckering blend of high quality Hornitos Tequila, Cointreau, Velvet Falernum, lime sour, cranberries, crowned with a sugar rim. Try all three BLT Steak Camelback originals holiday cocktails when you visit Camelback Inn this season. Enjoy responsibly! www.camelbackinn.com ZooLights: So did you pack on a couple of extra pounds during Thanksgiving? You should walk it off at Phoenix Zoo’s ZooLights, which is one of the Valley’s great traditions that you should make a point of seeing. Basically, the zoo uses 2.5 millions lights (which take 12 weeks to install!) to transform itself into one of the Southwest’s largest light exhibits. In addition to lights just about everywhere, they have over 500 unique light

sculptures. You know the coolest thing about it? It is powered by SRP’s EarthWise Energy, which is generated from sun, wind, the earth’s heat and flowing water in canals (see those canals actually DO do something other than serve as the world’s largest urinal…kidding.) The other thing to consider is that is it a MAJOR fund-raiser for the zoo, and in this economy our public treasures and outlets (like the zoo) need all the help they can get. More than 250,000 guests attend each year, so all those people can’t be wrong. ZooLights, which kicks off on Thanksgiving Day, runs every night from 6 – 10 p.m. through Jan. 10, 2010 --including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Tickets are either $9 or $10 depending on when you go; cheaper for zoo members. For more info (they also have other events during ZooLights) check out phoenixzoo.org. New Moon Breaks Records: Did you see New Moon yet? Either way, I thought it was interesting how its midnight release shattered records at Harkins. The midnight premiere of NEW MOON at Harkins Theatres locations Valley-wide broke all of Harkins Theatres previous records set by 2008’s The Dark Knight, this summer’s Transformers 2 and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. The film was presented on 109 nine screens and filled 40,000 seats. Of course, author of the Twilight book series, Stephanie Meyer, is a Valley resident—and probably living pretty, pretty well these days. Happy Hour for a Cause: During the holiday season especially, we like to tell you about FUN charitable events that we think you should participate in. Last week it was drinking wine… this week beer. I make it REALLY tough for you to contribute, huh? On December 4th, AZ Strings, a simultaneous happy hour featuring Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Celebration Ale and live acoustic guitar performances, will occur in 50 Arizona bars and restaurants. The event will benefit Operation Homefront, which is a non-profit organization that provides emergency assistance and morale to troops, their families, and to wounded warriors when they return home (remember they don’t decide to go to war, they just do their job). So from 5:00—7:00 on the 4th, a portion of the proceeds from every keg of participating Sierra Nevada beer sold not only during the event, but also throughout the months of November and December, will be donated to Operation Homefront. When you order a beer try to make it a Sierra Nevada (even if you don’t like it, buy it for a friend). Participating bars and restaurants include Casey Moore’s in Tempe, The Lodge in Scottsdale, CK’s Tavern, Boulders on Broadway and Grill in Phoenix and Hazelwood’s in Phoenix, among many others. A full list can be found azstrings.com/accounts.html. Cheers! Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

WHITE team President and KEVIN GUY Head Coach & Director of Football Operations.

ARIZONA RATTLERS RELAUNCH; NAME PRESIDENT AND HEAD COACH Team also announces signings of 22 players and lease with US Airways Center The Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football One have named DANNY

Following the introductions, Guy announced the signings of 22 players to the 2010 squad and White announced the team had signed a lease with the US Airways Center to play its 2010 home games. As team president, White will oversee the business and marketing efforts of the franchise. Most recently he served as head coach with the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League. White led the team to the playoffs in each of the franchise’s three years, including the team’s inaugural season in 2006. Prior to his years in Utah, White was the Rattlers’ head coach from 1992 to

2004, leading the team to five Arena Bowls and two AFL championships during that span. The team missed the playoffs just once in White’s 13 years. “The Rattlers are back and better than ever,” said White. “This will be one of the premier teams in the Arena Football One. There’s a great tradition of arena football here in Phoenix, and I look forward to helping bring that tradition back to our fans, starting next spring.” Guy resumes the position he held during the 2008 season, returning the Rattlers to the playoffs and doubling its win total from the prior season. For his efforts that season, Guy finished as the runner-up in the Coach of the Year awards. Recently inducted into the arenafootball2 Hall of Fame, Guy continues his illustrious career in arena football. A consistent winner as both a coach and player, Guy owned a 73% winning percentage in the af2 and left the league as its all-time winningest coach and was named the league’s Coach of the Year in 2003. As a defensive coordinator

with the AFL’s San Jose SaberCats, Guy’s squads consistently ranked at the top of the league in all defensive categories. He has yet to miss the playoffs as a head coach at any level in arena football and won the 2007 AFL Championship while with San Jose. “I am happy to be back,” said Guy. “Everything we do from this point forward will be about the process of bringing the Rattlers back to the championship level.” The team will also continue to play its home games at US Airways Center in downtown Phoenix. Nicknamed the Snake Pit and known for its loud and loyal fans, the arena has had a tradition of arena football dating back to its (and the Rattlers’) inaugural season in 1992. “The Snake Pit is undoubtedly the greatest home field advantage in all of Arena Football,” said White. “Our fans are Rattler Proud and Rattler Loud, and we’re going to give them a lot to cheer for when we take the field next spring.”

Slightly stripped down and relatively faithful to the original versions with very little variation, this collection of tunes is simply what the title implies: looking at these songs in a different light. Sometimes it sounds like different session takes of some of the tracks. It’s not bad but nothing to get overly excited about either. One would hope for a new while others simply go the “greatest hits” route. As the band is on a new label, licensing the original material is no doubt a costly option and one their former label will no doubt (if they haven’t

Are You Smarter Than A Nobel Prize Winner?

Let’s face it, most of us think we’re pretty well read and pretty darn smart. But not too many of us have won a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, and that is why I want to introduce you to Dr. Otto Warburg.

Dr. Otto Warburg 1931 Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Warburg won the 1931 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work during the 1920s on the then relatively unknown and mysterious disease called cancer. He successfully identified the root cause of cancer, and discovered that cancer cells, unlike normal cells, thrive in an anaerobic, acidic state rather than an oxygen rich, high pH environment. In fact, he discovered that cancer cannot grow in a high alkaline, oxygen rich environment at all. Think about this for a minute. This means we have known what causes cancer for over 78 years, but if this is true, why don’t we learn this fact in every high school biology class in America? Why don’t the cancer treatment centers, oncologists or cancer related charities shout this knowl-

edge from the rooftops? Why isn’t there a warning from the Surgeon General on every bottle or can of soft drinks or sports drinks sold in America? They are extremely acidic, after all, and can cause great damage to humans by helping to create an extremely acidic environment inside the body. And why isn’t there anything being done to tell every American to alkalize their body before it is too late? The good news is that there IS something being done to spread this news, and even more importantly, I have recently discovered an incredible way to achieve an alkaline balanced body that is simple, fast, and easy!

Change Your Water and Change Your Life! Can it really be as easy to create an alkaline balanced body as drinking a different kind of water every day? Yes! But only if it is the right kind of water, made fresh in your own kitchen every day from your very own powerful water processing machine.

Micro-Clustered for Maximum Absorption and Hydration After passing through one of these amazing machines, your water will be micro-clustered, which means it is the most effective water in the world when it comes to hydrating each and every one of the approximately 70 Trillion cells in your body. The vast majority of Americans are chronically dehydrated, which leads to a myriad of health challenges and concerns.

Every person I know wants to because of the extremely acidic lead a healthy, happy, active life, conditions of our bodies. but many people simply aren’t Alkalize or Die!
