PHOENIX THEATRE’S GREASEPAINT YOUTHEATRE OPENS SEASON WITH OLIVER! December 4 - December 20, 2009

Phoenix Theatre’s Greasepaint Youtheatre is kicking off the season with an all new production of the beloved, Tony Awardwinning musical Oliver! Opening night of the production is December 4, 2009 and will run through December 20. Greasepaint Artistic Director, Robert Kolby Harper is excited about bringing such a popular show to the Greasepaint stage. “Oliver is going to be amazing. The production and design teams are top notch and are dedicated to creating an extraordinary experience for both actors and audience alike. I am so proud of Greasepaint and the work we do. With D. Scott Withers directing, Oliver is going to be an incredible season opener!” The musical is an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ famous tale Oliver Twist with music, lyrics and book adaptation by Lionel Bart. Set in 1850, Oliver! tells the tale of a young orphaned boy, who due to his impudence, is tossed from the hardships of life at the orphanage into a chaotic

life on the run among street urchins and criminals. Oliver sings and dances his way through adversity right to the very end, where keeping his chin up finally pays off. Joe has a tremendous talent to work with in this miserly scrooge, played by New York actor Edward Prostak. Prostak was in perfect form for receiving the messages of the fantastic spirits from his past, present and future. His delicate realizations of the family of man were beautiful! “Armored”, a good ol’ fashion ‘heist’ movie! A new guard starts a job for an armored truck company. Elated at just having a job, there’s an expected element when his veteran coworkers coerce him to steal a truck containing $42 million. A wrinkle in what they thought was a foolproof plan, sets the members of the group at odds with each other, leading to a potentially deadly resolution.

CHRISTMAS RECIPES THAT PROMISE TO PLEASE Your New Holiday Menu Has Arrived!

mixture for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Soak only as many pieces of bread as you can fit in your griddle at one time. Two batches of six or three batches of four. Add melted butter to the medium hot griddle. 4. Sprinkle each slice of soaked bread with 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon sugar and lay sugar side down in the griddle. Sprinkle additional 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon sugar on top of each slice in the griddle. 5. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until French toast is a light golden brown and turn to cook other side. 6. Serve hot with creamy rum sauce or butter and maple syrup.

Egg Nog Rum French Toast This one is a perfect holiday morning breakfast or brunch for the adults in the family. Pair the perennial favorite rum-raisin flavor with egg nog for a cravable sweet and creamy French Toast. This is wonderful with fresh fruit and can be complimented with toasted or candied nuts or even warm rum soaked sugared raisins. This recipe can be done with 1/2 teaspoon of rum extract in place of the dark rum. This is a popular late-night breakfast for after Christmas Eve services or following the New Years Eve festivities.

Use a stand mixer if you have one. Cream together butter and sugar. (Basically blend them together until the mixture is light in color and fluffy.) Add the molasses and egg; blend well. Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl - flour, baking soda, spices, and salt. Use a fork or sifter to fluff up the flour. Add dry ingredients to the wet - do this a bit at a time, and if you are using a stand mixer, pause between additions. The dough will get very stiff.

Heat the oven to 350 degrees F, and prep a shallow dish with ginger-sugar mixture.

Cranberry Ginger Gems Cook Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients • 4 eggs • 1 cup egg nog • 2 tablespoons Dark Rum • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 12 slices cinnamon swirl raisin bread (thick cut) • 2 tablespoons butter, melted • 2 tablespoons cinnamon sugar (1 cup sugar to 1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon)

This recipe is part of The Food Channel’s Virtual Cookie Exchange. These Cranberry Gingerbread Gems are a Baking Day favorite, and one which you can always associate with this time of year. Small, crisp and plenty addictive – put ten or so in a small cellophane bag with a ribbon to give to co-workers this holiday season.

Now, you can shape these a few ways. If you want normal size cookies, simply shape into 1-inch balls and roll in the sugar. However, part of the charm of these cookies is how small, crispy and utterly addictive they are. To make small cookies, take a scoop of dough and roll it in your hands into a snake. Roll the snake in sugar, then take a sharp knife and cut into pieces about a half inch thick. Press slightly to reshape into a circle if necessary. Use a sil-pat on a baking sheet when making these as it pretty much negates any pan cleanup, but parchment or a greased cookie sheet works well too. Place the mini-cookies about an inch apart. Bake for no more than 10 minutes at 350 degrees - Check around 6 minutes in. A cookie should feel set but not stiff - if it feels sturdy in the oven, they are probably overdone. Bidding Farewell: This year has brought about a lot of goodbyes as some of the Valley’s favorite eateries, bars, and clubs have closed their door. The most recent, and probably one of the best dance clubs in Phoenix, Homme Lounge, had its last call this past week. Once a mecca for the gay, bisexual and transgender crowd, its notoriously fun dance nights, like the Party Foul! and cheap cocktails began attracting all types of Valley Night Owls. It makes me sad, because it comes a month after Shake! at Scottsdale’s Rouge Bar closed down too. With some of the best dance nights in the Valley closing, what’s a Night Owl to do? I recently heard that the owners of Phase 54, the split personality recording studio/concert venue/dance party in Chandler might be opening a new venue for live music and dance parties in early 2010. Let’s hope more people brave the short lived party scene, or else us dance party Night Owl addicts will be left with fewer and fewer places to convene. The Compound: So I finally made it over to the brand new The Compound Bar and Grill at Scottsdale and the 101, and not a moment too

soon. It is now one of my top 5 favorite places in the Valley, just like that. For those who don’t know, it is a restaurant, it is a bar and it is a music venue, and it does all of them very well. Let’s start with the most important thing--the music. This isn’t a dirty, grimy, dark music venue, but it is housed in a former Black Angus steakhouse at Scottsdale and the 101. But the thing is that longtime Valley soundman Ted Greenbaum and the people behind The Compound--who also run the McDowell Mountain Music Festival--optimized the sound system to fit the space. Plus they have inserted an excellent stage. So what kind of music? All sorts; rock, indie, jazz, blues and gospel to name a few. If you say that you can’t find good original music in Phoenix, you don’t have an excuse anymore as The Compound is running music 5 days a week, and sometimes has two shows per day (an early acoustic act) and a later main stage. Plus, they bring in national acts from time to time like Jackie Greene, Tea Leaf Green and Blind Boys of Alabama--again eclectic, but high quality. So let’s move to the food….The food is all VERY fresh and most of it is made with organic ingredients. They have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options for a menu. Right now they serve lunch and dinner with breakfast on the weekends, and have a happy hour from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Prices of food range from about $7-12, so it is very affordable especially for the quality. So what about the bar? It is nice, it has some flat screen TVs, some lounging couches, but what makes it great? The prices. 20 oz. domestic drafts for $4 every day, plenty of microbrews and specialty beers and generally cheap drinks. So is everything perfect? No, but the things that aren’t are minor and likely stem from this being their first time in the restaurant business. Information like hours, happy hours, specials and that are hard to find on the Web site, they have to find a way to deal with those who just want to eat, those who just want to see music and those who want to eat and do a little music (is full cover charge necessary?). I also think The Compound will run into people who want to label it one thing or another, but let’s think outside the box and see it as what it is not what it should be. And the thing that it is… is a great music venue, a great restaurant and a great bar. Oh, I forgot to mention that the bathrooms there are some of the nicest bathrooms I’ve seen at a restaurant no matter the price point. An overlooked album from earlier this year has found its way, finally being reviewed since being picked up by a major label. Trying to describe a band’s sound is essential if you’re trying to turn people on to them. Music isn’t just all “rock” or “pop”. There are many differ-

Are You Smarter Than A Nobel Prize Winner?

Let’s face it, most of us think we’re pretty well read and pretty darn smart. But not too many of us have won a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, and that is why I want to introduce you to Dr. Otto Warburg.

Dr. Otto Warburg 1931 Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Warburg won the 1931 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work during the 1920s on the then relatively unknown and mysterious disease called cancer. He successfully identified the root cause of cancer, and discovered that cancer cells, unlike normal cells, thrive in an anaerobic, acidic state rather than an oxygen rich, high pH environment. In fact, he discovered that cancer cannot grow in a high alkaline, oxygen rich environment at all. Think about this for a minute. This means we have known what causes cancer for over 78 years, but if this is true, why don’t we learn this fact in every high school biology class in America?
