Nick@ Night By Nick Connell HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone! There’s nothing like the gift of live theatre or music to spread the holiday cheer this Christmas. Just watch out for those Grinch’s and Scrooge’s - they’ll try to steal the joy of the season. Shalom! WINTER WONDERETTES A 60’s Christmas Musical at Broadway Palm Theatre Mesa Tom and Will Prather of the Prather Entertainment group certainly have a good sense of humor for the holidays, as they chose a hilarious 60’s Christmas Musical to bring the good cheer and fun. Winter Wonderettes, created by Roger Bean, with musical arrangements by Brian Baker is pure holiday bliss - 60’s style. Now you may remember the 60’s from the long hair counterculture movement - but this movement comes right out of the Harper Hardware Christmas show put on by the ladies who run the place. And of course they’re in the mood to make everybody happy for the holidays! Led by the leader of the pack Betty Jean (the energetic and funny redhead Erin McDowell), this quartet of sweet ladies kept the faithful Harper Christmas party throng rolling in the isles all night! But she had help spreading the cheer with her friends Missy (the spunky Trisha Hart Ditsworth), Cindy Lou (the tattoo sweetheart Kira Galindo), and Suzy (the pregnant cutie Maris Fernandes). All four were a delightful bunch who hit the harmonies all night while trying to avoid being fired by the old boss Mr. Harper. But leave it to “Santa Baby” and a few other musical surprises that delivered a very Merry Christmas to all from the Winter Wondrettes! But be forewarned, you better get your tickets soon - this musical comedy is headed for a sellout! PS. There are still some seats left for ANNIE through Christmas day also - another great show for the holidays! Tickets available at 480-325-6700 or BroadwayPalmWest.com A CHRISTMAS CAROL Actors Theatre at The Herberger Theater Center Phoenix Never promise something to a child and not give it to him, because in that way he learns to lie… Old Yiddish Wisdom. There was a cold breeze moving in the air last Saturday for the opening night of A Christmas Carol at the Herberger Mainstage. Actors Theatre will close the door on this chapter of a successful production the community will surely miss. There were too many empty seats for an opening night however, probably a symptom of Madoff’s and Scrooges, bankers and workhouses, ignorance and want. But the show must go on they say - so we thank God for Tiny Tim’s and the spirits of Christmas to remind us what we’ve become - or more relevant - what we must change as the clock closes in on midnight. There’s always wisdom and joy in A Christmas Carol - a timeless piece of theatre that just gets more touching every year, viewing the poor man on the corner who is ignored and rejected for just trying to make it in an angry and selfish time. The parallels to Mr. Dickens time are deafening - which makes this production that much more impressive. From the miner, the sailor, and the nurse, to the ensemble cast of unknowns, this was a night to remember the real reason Dickens wrote this masterpiece -to remind us all how much we need each other. Of course, there’s Kim Bennett as Scrooge himself, who delivers another outstanding performance of the old coot, wailing and whining his way to salvation; Ben Tyler, as the bloated old Fezziwig, sending everyone home with a full stomach and a joyful thought; Casey Likes and Robert Colby Harper as the gentle and kind Tiny Tim and Bob Cratchit: and perhaps the best of show this particular writer will remember for years to come, being Sally Jo Bannow and David Barker as the spirits of Christmas past and present. They’re presence and performance were the crown jewels of this community’s favorite holiday production. Tickets available at ActorsTheatrephx.org. “GOD BLESS US ONE AND ALL!” -Tiny Tim BREAK A LEG!

Enjoy Some Holiday Cheer at Arizona Broadway Theatre with Heartwarming Productions for the Entire Family

New Years Eve Gala Concert

John Davidson ‘Tis the season at Arizona Broadway Theatre. From an original commissioned musical to the re-telling of a holiday classic, ABT has many offerings that will warm your heart and that are perfect for the entire family.

8

Home for the Holidays, an ABT original musical written by Stacey Gordon and Layne Phillips, features traditional Christmas songs tossed together with some of ABT favorite performers and a dash of heartwarming holiday spirit. The musical tells the story about a troupe of traveling actors who learn the true meaning of the holiday season when they get stranded in small Arizona town. “Last year I was asked by the producers of ABT to write a holiday show for the Encore Room,” stated Gordon, “so I came up with a 1940’s style radio show. As we were

rehearsing that production, I began wondering – what if these actors got stranded in the radio station due to a blizzard? How would they spend their holiday? That’s were the idea of Home for the Holidays came from. Almost everyone wants to be with their loved ones during the holidays, but like many of us, it’s just not always possible.” Gordon continued, “Sometimes you have to make the best of the situation that you’re in, and that’s what happens with this troupe of traveling actors.”

ABT’s cozy Encore Room will be the home for It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, which was inspired by the classic American film. It is performed as a 1940’s live radio broadcast in front of a studio audience. Take a journey with George Bailey and his guardian angel, Clarence, in this touching story of giving and receiving. “The story is a timeless classic,” mentioned Joseph Martinez, the show’s director. “The live radio play is performed by six actors who portray the dozens of characters in the town of Bedford Falls. The audience gets to experience what goes in to doing a radio show, such as seeing how the sound effects are made from the many different—and very interesting—props,” Martinez said. Seating is limited for this heartwarming production.

The full-scale production of Home for the Holidays, presented on ABT’s main stage, is the perfect way for the entire family to be put in the spirit of the season.

ABT’s very popular Theatre for Young Audiences continues with a presentation of Christmas in the Land of Oz. With Christmas only a few days away, Aunt Em and Uncle Henry are finding that times are tough and are losing heart. Dorothy knows where to go to replace a lost heart: the Land of Oz! According to Kurtis W. Overby, ABT’s Artistic Associate, this story has fun new characters added to the popular ones everyone knows from the original story. Presented on the main stage, tickets are available for reserved and general admission seating. Also, a continental breakfast may be purchased on the day of the show. On Monday, December 13, Robert Shaw returns to ABT’s main stage with his holiday show, Blue Christmas: A Holiday Tribute to the King. Hear your favorite rockin’ Christmas songs mixed in with Elvis’ biggest hits. This show is perfect for those who delight in the blessings of the season, Elvis and rock ‘n’ roll. Entertainer John Davidson – who has received acclaim for his work in theatre, television, film and night clubs – visits ABT’s main stage for two performances of Laugh Lines and Love Songs on Wednesday, December 15. John gained popularity as a Broadway singer, TV actor and game show host

Mr. Dyer now appears regularly at The Dutton Family Theater in Branson, Missouri, with The George Dyer Show, which was nominated for 11 show awards in 2010 by BransonShowAwards.com and he was named the Branson Vocalist of the Year by BransonCritic.com. The George Dyer Show brings its special mix of opera and Broadway favorites to ABT’s main stage. Finally, celebrate the New Year in classic style as the Arizona Broadway Theatre hosts its annual New Year’s Eve Gala, The Grandest Affair in Town, on Friday, December 31. Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Walden Media has announced plans to reboot “Benji,” the family-friendly adventure franchise about a loveable mutt that first hit the big screen in 1976. Brandon Camp, son of the franchise creator Joe Camp Jr., will produce, write and direct the project. Meanwhile, Paramount Digital Entertainment has announced plans to release “Jackass 3.5,” a follow-up to this fall’s third feature-length installment of MTV’s popular television series, March 2011 exclusively online before making the leap onto DVD. Finally, Joss Whedon is less than enthusiastic about Atlas Entertainment’s plans to reboot “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” as a feature-length film franchise. Whedon in 1997 created a television series based on the original feature-length incarnation of the material. Read Whedon’s reaction to the news and be among the first to get the latest scoop from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com

As the ‘buzz’ continues toward the February 27, 2011 date for the Oscars®, and starring in the upcoming romantic comedy ‘How Do You Know’, Jack Nicholson leads the Best Actor Academy Award® category with 3 wins from 11 nominations!

the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina (Natalie Portman) fits the White Swan role perfectly but rival dancer Lily (Mila Kunis) is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side - a recklessness that threatens to destroy her. (Rated R – 103 minutes)

Reviewers Roundup! ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’ Lucy and Edmund Pevensie (Georgie Henley & Skandar Keynes) once again return to Narnia with their doubting pompous cousin Eustace (Will Poulter), meet with Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) and undertake a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader facing dragons, dwarves, merfolk, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge of the world. Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com): “While previous Narnian Chronicles have seemed long winded and a bit over zealous, this voyage sails across waters consisting of just the right amount of mysticism. That, paired with the movie’s charmingly subtle sense of spirituality, makes ‘Dawn Treader’ the family friendly fantasyfueled spectacle of the Holiday Season.” Grade: B Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “This next installment in the Narnia saga is delightfully entertaining as the principal characters grow and mature into young adults, while the basic elements of spirituality are firmly present. The addition of the doubting cousin along for the voyage is refreshing, and hope we haven’t seen the last of Reepicheep and my favorite Narnian delightfully voiced by Simon Pegg” Grade: B **A special note: The 3-D aspect, along with the uncomfortable glasses, was terribly disconcerting and distracting for the press screening. Is it the quality of the 3D process used for filming, or that the screening venue is all-digital and affects the 3-D projection process? I’ll investigate with a report online at ScreenScene. org

Randy Montgomery (AZ Weekly): “Black Swan” is a bizarre and strange trip through the world and mind of a ballet dancer. Most of the time you find yourself lost and asking what is real and what is simply taking place in the warped imagination of lead character Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman). With that being said, don’t be surprised to see Oscar nods for Portman for Best Actress and Best Director for Darren Aronofsky. Portman turns in the strongest performance of her career by far and is deserving of the critical attention she is receiving…” Grade: B Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “Natalie Portman is exceptional as she delivers a frightening portrait of a dancer who wins the role of the Swan Queen because of her wonder-

Reviewers Roundup! ‘I Love You Phillip Morris’

Randy Montgomery (AZ Weekly): “I Love You Phillip Morris is being promoted as a “Top Film of the Year,” and while funny man Jim Carrey does turn in a strong performance as a gay con man with numerous love scenes with co-star and romantic interest Ewan McGregor, his delivery is no different than that of Ace Ventura or any other of his movies. This true story is borderline offensive, not because of the love scenes, but because of language and the stereotypes. Worthy of acknowledgement is the supporting role McGregor turns in. Maybe a nod for him?” Grade: C Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “What starts out as comedic revelation of the impact of secrets long hidden, morphs into a credible character study of compulsive vs. dependency behavior. The will to succeed is in us all and Carrey’s character demonstrates the results of ‘unchecked’ pursuit of financial stability as the ‘bread winner’ while McGregor’s presents the downfall of absolute commitment when one knows that it can only end badly for both involved, whether it’s a gay/lesbian, or, heterosexual relationship.” Grade: C-

The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly’s Film! contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Read Stan Robinson’s and Joseph J. Airdo’s full reviews exclusively online. Randy Montgomery (AZ Weekly): “‘Four Lions’ tackles the serious and sensitive subject of Muslim terrorists and jihad with humor and does it well. At times, the constant arguing and yelling of the main characters tests your patience, but the end result is worth the minor aggravation. Director Christopher Morris introduces us to a group of Muslim men in London who are planning an attack on one of their own Mosques in the effort of starting a race war. Everything that can and will go wrong happens. By the end, strangely you feel sorry for the guys. In no way is the purpose of the film to support terrorism, but the masterful direction makes you like and sympathize for the terrorists all the while poking fun at their very behavior.” Grade: BStan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “The use of subtle English comedic overtones has always been a favorite for presenting disturbing stories and circumstances that can become tediously dramatically overdriven. While endearing us to each of the men and their quirkiness’s, the underlying theme of the magnitude of their intent is cleverly interwoven as the story progresses. It takes clear vision and firm directorial control to balance humor with an unthinkable dramatic theme. With his background of a comedic performer and a clear vision for ‘Four Lions’, director Christopher Morris spins one heck of an emotional yarn.” Grade: B

Airdo’s full reviews exclusively online. Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com): “This based-on-a-true-story comedy is so simply outrageous that you have to see it to believe it. And even then, you still may feel compelled to cry foul. However, there is no getting around the fact that this is one incredibly fun - albeit wild - ride through romantic obsession. It is the perfect fun-filled art-house remedy to being inundated by the season’s more serious cinematic fare.” Grade: B

Did everybody go out and get a notebook and keep some records of what they liked about the beers they tried last week? Either way it’s okay, but keeping some notes will help you remember which styles you like, and especially which beers within a certain style you particularly enjoy. Even within a style category there is more than enough room for individuality and creativity to come through. Last time we got a good start talking about some top-fermented beers. Today we continue to look at Ale styles. Let’s see which of these you like the best.

Extra Special Bitter - ESB’s are the stronger examples of this style. Most examples of ESBs will be copper in color with a mild caramel-malt aroma. Some examples will also have hop and fruit notes in the aroma. The flavor will typically be bitter with caramel, noticeable fruity esters and earthy or floral hops. A very drinkable ale with slightly more alcohol content than a Bitter. Still a nice session beer.

KEEPING GOOD TABS ON GOOD BEER

Bitter - The original session beer. Historically, this style originated around the start of the 20th century in England. This genre of ales is divided into substyles differentiated on alcoholic strength and hop bitterness: ordinary bitter; special/extra bitter and extra special bitter (ESB). Ordinary bitters are the weaker examples of this style. Most examples of this style will be

Brown Ale - Light to dark brown in color with tan heads, brown ales were originally derived in England as adapatations of the mild ale. These original English brown ales were maltier and sweeter than mild ales. Flavors often included caramel, nutty, toasty, toffee, and light roasted aromas and flavors (sometimes dark fruits in the Southern English versions). Hop presence within this style remained relatively low until the

develoment of the American brown ale, which featured not only American malts and hops, but interpretations that were more highly hopped and which sometimes included more roasted and chocolate (even coffee) aromas and flavors. Brown ales feature higher alcohol levels than mild ales, but they generally fall short of the porter or stout in their degree of roastiness and body. Continued on Page 25...

bottled joy to the world.

Blonde Ale - Often referred to as blonde or golden ales, this style is obviously named after their appearance. Their aromas and flavors can range from light to medium intensity, typically featuring a maltiness more so than a hoppiness. Light fruity flavors can be apparent, as well as medium hopping levels (although these are not hopped to levels of an American pale ale). Sometimes blonde ales incorporate up to 25% wheat in their malt base as well as sugar adjuncts. Yet, the finish should be fairly crisp and dry (sometimes from a cold conditioning). Despite their malty and sometimes sweet flavors, blonde ales should not be cloying and are generally highly drinkable, comparable to their German Kolsch counterparts which we will get to later.

Cream Ale - Cream Ales were developed in response to the American Lager and while they have the name Ale in them, they are typically more of a hybrid. They are brewed at warm fermentation temperatures with ale or lager yeasts and are either cold conditioned afterwards or blended with a lager. The flavor is light, crisp, and refreshing with hops playing a very minor role in the aroma and flavor. Corn and rice adjuncts are common in this style and are frequently detected in the moderately sweet aroma and flavor. The color is typically pale or light golden with ample carbonation. This is another very drinkable session beer. English Strong Ale - A general class of English beers that are light to brown in color with moderate to full bodies. English strong ales are generally malty with minimal to low hop presence. As with most English ales, strong ales often feature fruity ester and caramel flavors, even buttery or butterscotch elements. This comes from the intentional retention of diacetyl produced during the fermentation process and is one of the few styles where this is an acceptable flavor. Old Ales and English

Barleywines are two specific types of English Strong Ales. Flemish Sour - The Flemish Sour group of beers incorporates two substyles: Flanders Red and Brown (or Oud Bruin) Ales. Both the Red (bugundy to red-brown) and Brown (reddish brown) originated in Flanders, Belgium and encompass aged (frequently of blended vintages), often wine-like beers that exhibit varrying sweet-sour combinations of complex flavors (fruit normally featured in both). The Red varieties are generally more acidic (vinegar normally noticeable) and less malty with a lighter body, while the Brown varieties tend to emphasize the maltiness (and dark malt caramel, toffee, and chocolate flavors) with a more moderate than light body. Hops play an insignificant role in each and the carbonation is normally low.

tiple points in the brewing process. Fruit beers can theoretically be built off of just about any ale or lager style, although ales are most common (especially wheats, porters, and stouts). The fruit beer classification does not include beers with natural fruity flavors derived from yeasts, malts, or hops. As you can see, this is less of a style and more of a classification category. IPA - Originally brewed in the 18th century to survive seabound exportation from Imperial England to British troops in colonial India, imperial pale ales (or IPAs) exploited the preservative qualities of hops by using more of them. Although the first versions were considered highly hopped at the time, today’s IPAs now include significantly bolder and even more bitter American versions of this English original. The IPA is a medium-bodied, maltier, and hoppier version of the pale ale with flavors and aromas typical of English malt and hop varieties (caramel, toffee, biscuity, toasty, light fruitiness, floral, earthy), as well as of American malt and hop variet-

ies (citrus, caramel, piney, resinous, and some fruitiness). IPAs can range in color from pale amber to reddish copper and typically have good head retention, leaving behind great lacing in the glass. The alcohol content of IPAs is normally between 5 and 7.5%. Imperial IPA Imperial IPAs, often called double IPAs (DIPAs), are exactly what their name implies, extra strength imperial pale ales. Imperial IPAs are uniquely American creations, originating in the late 1990’s and exploding into the heart of the hop hungry American craft brewing scene in the early 2000’s. Russian River Brewing’s Pliney the Elder is typically considered the first beer of this style. Like IPAs, they range in color from gold/amber to reddish copper. They feature aromas and flavors comparable to IPAs, but with more hop intensity, a richer malt base, a heavier mouthfeel, and a higher but not overly noticeable alcohol presence. Although their typical alcohol content of 7.5-10%, as well as many other of their quantitative measurements, overlaps that of barleywines, DIPAs are usually hoppier than barleywines, which tend to be hop-malt balanced or more malty than hoppy. Irish Ale – Usually considered an Irish Red Ales, these originated in Ireland and are known for their drinkability. They are generally clean and malty with an initial sweetness and a roasted dryness in the finish. Some examples may have a light buttery character and a low hop profile. Typically this ale is amber to deep reddish copper in color and clear. The Irish Red is derived from an ancient Egyp-

tian recipe, and in reality is an amber by today’s standards. Most examples are 4% to 6% ABV. Kölsch - Kölsch is an appellation protected by the Kölsch Konvention, and its use is restricted to the 20 or so breweries in and around Cologne (Köln), Germany. This ale is a clean, crisp, perfectly balanced beer, usually with very subtle fruit (apple, cherry or pear) flavors and aromas. Although an ale, it is fermented at cooler temperatures and typically lagered for at least a month. Very pale gold to light gold in color and filtered to a brilliant clarity. This has become a very popular style for brewers looking to produce a nice warm weather beer. There you have our second batch of beer styles. Next week, we look at some other interesting styles and explore several little known and typically misrepresented styles as we delve in to the world of lambic.

GAME! GSP Intends to Make Quick Work of Koscheck

Tempe's ONLY Ohio Bar!

Just a few days before his much anticipated rematch with rival Josh Koscheck, St-Pierre is answering critics that have questioned his style in recent match-ups, claiming his game strategy brings more of a play it safe approach instead of a hungry, aggressive and determined attack. The criticism follows recent comments by UFC president Dana White as well as others including Koscheck about the apparent “boring” style displayed by fighters within the Greg Jackson camp.

St-Pierre however is quick to disagree, insisting that Jackson’s fighters are plenty exciting, himself included. He’s now more ready than ever to prove that again at UFC 124.

“I don’t believe it because if you look at the guys from our camp normally we win fight of the night every 2 UFC’s, a guy from our camp wins fight of the night, or knockout of the night, or submission of the night. In general we’re very entertaining,” St-Pierre said on Monday. One of the major changes that StPierre has made for this training camp has been his work with boxing guru Freddie Roach. The Canadian trained with him at his gym in California, and with his tutelage St-Pierre will be looking for the knockout on Saturday night. “The main thing I’ve done for a while, I’ve been working on punching power. I’ve been working out with Freddie Roach, and the mechanics of the way I was punching, and a lot of the stuff I was doing was wrong, and he corrected (it),” St-Pierre stated. “In the first fight with Josh, when I was striking with him it was mostly to set up my takedowns, but this time when I’m going to strike with him, it will be to knock him out.”

finish them two times, but I want to make sure to take the time that if I get an opportunity to finish a fight, this time I’m going to take it. I’m the kind of guy I don’t make the same mistake twice.”

“Roger Gracie came in and Roger Gracie is a specialist of finishing his opponents when he takes the guy’s back,” St-Pierre commented. “I’ve been working a lot on that. If I get an opportunity and I get an opportunity for the finish, I will be able to finish him a lot better this time.”

Koscheck however is hardly convinced. “Is St-Pierre going to be a so-called boring Greg Jackson fighter and just take me down? Or is Georges St-Pierre going to have the balls to stand toe to toe with me?” Koscheck asked. “We’ll see.”

He added, “I want to finish fights, I’ve been very close in my last fights to

Every time I flip through a lingerie magazine all I see are hot Mrs. Santa outfits, but really, what would any of us do with one? And I’m not counting the people that are “too into Xmas.” However, now I know. This pub crawl is a ridiculous laugh out loud event which puts everyone into mandatory Santa outfits. What happens then? Well we all get drunk. Sound merry enough for you? But wait, the fuzzy feeling gets better as you are really raising money for the Real Gift Foundation that gives toys to underprivileged kids here in the valley. In simple terms, you bar hop, collect toys, match bar tabs, raffle prizes and donate the proceeds! Last year they raised over $24,000 and collected over 200 toys! So do something worthwhile this year! Fergie named Woman of the Year

Britney Spears ‘in love’ with New Album

Fergie felt “humbled” to be named Woman of the Year by Billboard magazine.

Britney Spears has confirmed she will release her new album in March and that she is “in love” with it. The ‘Womanizer’ singer has been working with producers including Dr. Luke and Max Martin - who have written songs for stars including Katy Perry, NSYNC, Kelly Clarkson, Usher, Kesha and on previous Britney albums - on her first tracks since 2008s ‘Circus’, and said she can’t wait for fans to hear the results.

The Black Eyed Peas singer was thrilled to be recognized for her musical achievements at New York’s Pierre Hotel last week, particularly as so many other females have achieved chart success in the last 12 months. She said: “Congratulations to all the women of the year. I’m so humbled to be in a category with so many strong females in the business. For what used to be just a boys’ club, us b***hes are coming up.” Paying tribute; the ‘My Humps’ hitmaker’s bandmates, Taboo and Apl. de.ap, praised their “sister” for the dimension she brings to the group. Taboo said: “In 2002 we met Fergie at a studio. We were looking for someone to sing on a song called

‘Shut Up.’ When she came on, she blew us away. She was a professional, so on point and we wanted to put her on more songs. To make a long story short, thank God we put her on a lot more songs. We can attribute so many things to our success, and Fergie’s been a part of that. I’m so grateful to have her as a sister.”

She tweeted: “I’m almost done with my new album and it will be coming out this March. I AM IN L-O-V-E WITH IT! It’s more British than you would expect but
