Triple Espresso is Coffee House Comedy at its Best By Nicholas Connell Take three successful solo performers, add some coffee and creative writing (without any paper), throw in a few ideas, plenty of improvisation, and you have the makings of the hilarious hit comedy, Triple Espresso now playing at the Actors Theatre. The authors, Bill Arnold, Michael Pearce Donley, and Bob Stromberg, found their creative juices working together on this laugh marathon, which combines the music of Michael, the comedy and magic of Bill, and the physical humor of Bob. With elements of slapstick, vaudeville, and audience participation to spice up the show, you have an original and humorous comedy experience full of surprises! But wait, there’s more! Director William Partlan molds together a trio of seasoned veterans to take us on a joy ride at the Herberger Theatre that you’ll just have to experience front and center. As “Hugh Butternut Nite” unfolds, we get to meet our three starring thespians, featuring Dane Stauffer as Hugh, Charles Peters as Buzz Maxwell, and Brian Kelly as Bobby Bean. Just the names alone should clue you in to the fun that’s in store at the TE Coffeehouse. These three guys will not quit until the fat lady sings or laughs-whichever come first- as you’ll get to sing along, play along, and even tell stories you’ve never heard before, while harmonizing your favorite songs from the 70’s...and there’s more! But you’ll have to take my word for it; go get some coffee and see this funny and outrageous comedy! The laughs don’t get any better! And while you’re at it, take a friend too, we could all use a little medicine from the Triple Espresso coffeehouse. For tickets go to www. actorstheatrephx.org, or call (602) 252-8497.

Did You Know?

Bruce (Jake T. Austin, left) and his sister Andi (Emma Roberts, right) in “Hotel for Dogs.” Photo Credit: Jaimie Trueblood. © 2008 DreamWorks LLC and Cold Spring Pictures. All Rights Reserved.

By Randy Montgomery My mother has always said, “Don’t trust anyone that does not like animals.” We have had at least one dog (and at times up to three) in our family since I was a toddler. I can’t imagine life without a furry friend. My current dog Baxter is a terror. He eats everything not screwed into the wall, but he’s family. That being said, anyone that cannot find Hotel for Dogs “cute” or enjoyable may be a little suspect. Piece of advice; don’t trust them with the keys to your house if you are gone on vacation. The story is pretty basic; Bruce and Andi are brother and sister (Jake T. Austin and Emma Roberts) currently living with a set of

disagreeable foster parents (Lisa Kudrow and Kevin Dillon) and their dog. To fill the void in the life, they begin to adopt strays and take them to an abandoned hotel, and then set out to free captives in the city pound set to be put to sleep. Along with a few friends, the kids fix up the building and devise creative ways to keep the guests entertained and fed. An ingenious waste management system is also created. Hotel for Dogs is a fun family film that delivers a serious message about acceptance and the importance of family and friends. Animal adoption is also a major focus, and while Andi and Bruce don’t face a similar outcome as their canine companions, their lives are similar to the strays.

Inkheart: From Page to Screen By Randy Montgomery

The economy is in the tank, but I have a way for you to make money: write a young-adult fantasy novel. It will sell millions of copies, and then inevitably be turned into a series of films. The latest best-selling novel turned bigscreen adventure, Cornelia Funke’s Inkheart, which was published in 2003, illustrates the soundness of this advice. The film stars Brendan Fraser in the role as Mortimer (Mo) “Silvertounge” Flocheart, a book binder with a unique gift – whatever he reads on paper comes to life. This amazing ability ends up sending his wife into the pages of a novel called Inkheart, and in her place comes a host of villainous characters. Mo and his daughter Meggie (Eliza Hope Bennett) set out to find the last copy of the book. When it is found,

Mo plans to “read” his wife back out the story. This process is complicated and thwarted when the evil characters interfere with his plans. The film is designed to be an epic adventure but fails on delivering any real excitement. The premise is unique, the visual effects are stunning, and the performances are entertaining, especially that of Helen Mirren as the comically grumpy Elinor, but the ending seemed a little rushed, seeing as how the rest of story is leisurely paced. Inkheart is in no way a bad film, I just wish it had been a little faster paced with a little more action. With two other books in the trilogy, there will more than likely be two more films as well.

The Cure for Insomnia (1987) is the longest movie ever made, with a total running time of 85 hours (5,220 min)! It premiered in its entirety at The School Of The Art Institute in Chicago, Illinois from January 31st to February 3rd, 1987, in one continuous showing!

Killshot is Right on Target! By Stan Robinson

Golden Globe winner Mickey Rourke (Best Actor for The Wrestler) is back! I’ve always been drawn to his work as an actor; he reminds me of Marlon Brando during his earlier work. His upcoming movies include; 13, Sin City 2, The Expendables, and Iron Man 2. In this adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s best-selling crime novel, Diane Lane and Thomas Jane (The Punisher, 2004) are a husband and wife going through a trial separation. Unknowingly, they disrupt the plans of a small time con-artist (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, from 2007’s gem, The Lookout). Circumstances take extraordinary turns when a veteran hitman, known only as the Blackbird (Mickey Rourke), becomes involved. It’s an old fashion “popcorn movie”, where one goes along for the wild ride as the story heads to the ultimate confrontation and resulting Killshot.

On Inauguration Day, January 20th, the collector’s edition DVD, President Barack Obama: The Man and His Journey, was released. 16-time Grammy nominated singer/composer Brian McKnight created the disc’s title tune, “Yes We Can”. The DVD is narrated by 4-time NAACP Image Award winning and Golden Globe nominated actor Blair Underwood. In a conversation, we talked about the essence of the song. “I wanted to create a song that bridged time,” McKnight said. “We have 2 and 3 generations, which spans time from the 60’s to present day. I wanted to capture that time frame and put the feeling into one song.” When I heard “Yes We Can”, I was reminded of the late Sam Cooke’s song “A Change is Gonna Come”. It has that blues/ballad edge, with the style and

artistry that is vitage McKnight. “It was an honor to be asked to compose a song for such a memorable event,” he continued. “The DVD in itself is a testament to great events in history. The involvement of so many to make the DVD possible is truly a work of art.” Brian McKnight’s next CD 10, is due out in the fall 2009 on the Warner Bros. label.

Some dentists see themselves as authority figures, and I just don’t agree with that.”

Yeah, yeah, you’ve heard it all before, and you probably didn’t like what you had to hear. Before you turn the page in protest of that uneasy feeling creeping over you, howeveryou know the one, reminiscent of a trip to the principal’s office, when your dentist tells you how you have been doing such a poor job of maintaining your mouth- maybe you should read what Dr. Collin Fairchild at Crossroads Dental Group and Orthodontics in Chandler has to say. “I stayed out of the dentist chair for years at a time before I actually became one,” says this Columbia graduate and owner of multiple advanced degrees. “My teeth have been in different conditions over my life, but whatever shape they were in when I did go to the dentist, I always dreaded it because I don’t like being chastised. People don’t want to go to the dentist to hear a lecture; they go to get their teeth serviced. I promised myself that I would never make anyone feel that way when they came to see me. I try to get to know my patients and help them; people can make their own decisions.” This is a refreshing thing to hear from the guy holding an electric drill and metal hook. One, that he won’t treat you in accordance with the relative health of your pie hole; and

Crossroads Dental Group offers a diverse set of services and procedures for its growing number of all-age patients, ranging from oral surgery to x-rays to teeth whitening. What they don’t include in their operation, however, is the typical price point of competitors. “Our office can perform all procedures and we have a team of specialists on hand; oral surgeons, periodontists, hygienists- you name it,” Dr. Fairchild says. “For people who need restoration work done, we offer Cerec, a product that allows dentists to make crowns using a variety of computer assisted technologies, including 3D photography and CAD/CAM. Instead of coming in for repeat visits, your teeth can be restored with Cerec in a single sitting. The new whitening product we have is ZOOM - which is done in only thirty minutes-and costs only $ 249. It’s not uncommon for some practices to charge $400 to $500 for the same thing. I’m in this field to fix people’s problems. When they walk in the door and they’re hurting, I want them to walk out the door feeling better. It’s hard to do that if we’re gouging them.” The next time you want to give your menu munchers a good once-over, give Dr. Collin Fairchild or any one of the friendly and capable dentists at Crossroads Dental Group and Orthodontics a call at (480) 8215444. DJ Roonie G. to Spin Birds Nest into Frenzy

Scottsdale- On Saturday, January 31st, the mega tent defining the FBR Open Birds Nest will be reverberating with the sights and sounds of one of the world’s most recognizable VJs. Two-time Club World Award Winner and 2008 nominee for “America’s Best DJ,” Roonie G. controls the booth with laser-like precision and an unwavering focus. Whereas traditional DJs are locked into spinning solely audio, this maven of mad beats delves into another dimension by mixing his own creative blend of visual content as well. His presentation encompasses popular music videos, iconic film footage, custom graphics, and comedy shorts, delivering a multi-sensory showcase of energy.

Where and when do you spin? I spin regularly at JET in Las Vegas (at The Mirage Hotel & Casino), MIXX (at The Borgata Hotel Casino) in Atlantic City NJ, Opera in Atlanta, Masquerade (at Harrahs Casino) in New Orleans, and John Barleycorn in Chicago, as well as many other one-offs. I usually travel to two to three cities every week.

Good DJs are highly coordinated and skilled live performers.

How did you get started in the industry? I use to breakdance professionally in Japan. I never could find a DJ to mix my music properly, so I started DJing myself. I’ve been consulting with Pioneer Pro DJ over the last 10 years and I give them input on DJ equipment which they use to develop new DJ technology. My input helped lead to the DVD turntables and video mixxing.

If there were a “Golden Rule” for being a DJ, what would it be? Timing is everything!

What will people hear when they listen to your music? It’s not just what they hear, but what they see and experience that is different from what other DJs do.

Your favorite place to play? Las Vegas! But Opera in Atlanta is freakin’ off da chain, too!

If you could change one thing about the DJclub scene, what would it be? More video monitors and projection screens in every club! What would you be doing if you weren’t DJing? Writing, producing music, playing poker, and spinning on my head.

What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? DJing Donald Trump’s birthday party and watching him smile while the house is rockin’. Tell us a secret about yourself or your show: For me, video mixing is no longer just a novelty; it is truly a part of my art form.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about DJs? Most people don’t recognize DJs as musicians, but a lot of DJs now are musicians and producers.

Daniel Ash of Bauhaus to Make ‘Shake’ Appearance Phoenix- On Saturday, January 24th at the Rogue Bar in Scottsdale, ‘Shake!’- the Valley’s premiere dance party- will host former Bauhaus guitarist Daniel Ash, who is set to spin alongside resident DJs William Reed, Prince $$ (pronounced ‘prince money money’), and Funkfinger & Ashley Nicole. This event will also feature a photo booth hosted by Valley photographer Tate Hemlock, projected visuals, and free giveaways courtesy of sponsor Antics Fueled by Toyota Matrix. Led by the vocal stylings of Peter Murphy, Bauhaus is considered by many to be the first Gothic rock group. Originally formed in Northampton, England in 1978, the band borrowed their name from the German art and architecture school of the same name. Originally going by the name Bauhaus 1919, the band later dropped the number portion within a year of its formation. Bauhaus combined a number of influences, including punk music, glam rock- even funk and dub- to create a gloomy, but very passionate sound that appealed to many who were left looking for something new in the wake of punk’s collapse. Their sound proved influential, and inspired a wave of postpunk groups delving in the intense, gloomy style that would eventually come to be known as Gothic rock.

14

Ash is best-known for co-writing the classic post-punk goth-rock anthems “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”, “She’s In Parties”, “Spy In The Cab”, and the Tones of Tail dance floor anthem,”Go”. Is it real? Is it true?! Yes, yes, the Cardinals, yes THOSE Cardinals, on their way to the Super Bowl!!!!!!! Is anyone going? Tell me your story. Thinking about going? These next couple of weeks are going to be B-B-BUUUUUZZZZZZZZZZZING!!!! Next week, find out where to watch the big game, but this week find out all that happened, is happening, and will happen in the Valley! The Cardinals: As a Valley resident—I won’t say it has been a long time, but long enough—I can believe that our (yes MY) Arizona Cardinals are going to the SUPER BOWL!! I must say that Larry Fitzgerald is now my idol and far surpasses any Phoenix Sun that is or ever will be; the guy is just amazing. Congratulations to Cardinals coach Ken Wizenhunt (okay…and yes the ownership) for the unbelievable feat they have achieved. Rally around your Red Birds, Cardinal fans and Valley residents, because this is the biggest thing that has happened to the Valley since the D-Backs won the title. Go Cardinals! For more info, visit azcardinals.com. McDowell Mountain Music Festival: Very quietly, the McDowell Mountain Music Festival is assembling their lineup for this year. One of my favorite, if not favorite, events of the year, this gathering is quickly turning into a nationally-recognized and attended event. It is still a ways off, April 24th and 25th, but I thought you’d want to know some of the entertainers who will be on hand. So far, only Friday has began to fill in, and that lineup includes national and international acts including ultimate festival band Michael Franti & Spearhead, Hot Tuna, The New Riders of the Purple Sage and local acts like Delcoa, one of my very favorites in the Valley. For more information, visit mmmf.net. Mill Ave Inc.: It’s hard to imagine Mill Ave. before American Apparel, Urban Outfitters, Starbucks, chain restaurants and endless trendy dance clubs, but a select few can. Before Mill was heavily influenced by ASU and bought up by the large corporate chains, it was a hub for the organic Tempe, Ariz. indie, punk and folk scene. In his documentary, Nicholas “Nico” Holthaus, explores corporate America’s effect on

16

the Mill Avenue music scene, and tells the story of Mill Avenue’s transformation. Nico gathers insight from community members, club owners, policy makers, and musicians, and draws on his experiences as a band and venue videographer during the mid-late 1990s. Mill Ave Inc., “ a must see movie for all Americans,” will be showing at Modified Arts in Phoenix on Wednesday, February 4th at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7:45pm. For more information on the documentary, check out, www.millaveinc.com, and visit www.modified.org for more information on Modified Arts. Phoenix Comicon 2009: The other day I was watching a documentary on Cat Show participants. I was amused to learn that they are exactly the type of people you imagine would attend a cat show: older women who decorate with lots of country clutter, and have shrines to their cats in their homes. It made me realize three things: 1) stereotypes have some truth to them, 2) there is a niche community out there for everyone, 3) and these types of events are one of the few opportunities for like-minded people to gather. A similar event will take place locally, Phoenix Comicon 2009. This weekend, January 23rd – 25th, it’s time to dress up as your favorite character and bring your comics to the Mesa Convention Center to be signed. Phoenix Comicon 2009 will feature anime, Sci-fi movie and TV actors, and comic book creators Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise), Todd McFarlane (Spawn) and cover artist Jo Chen. Tickets are priced between $15 and $30, while admission is free for children 12 years old and under with an adult. For more information on artists and the event’s program schedule, visit phoenixcomicon. com. Night Owl Twitter: Who’s on Twitter? I know a lot of people are up and down on this social media outlet, but the Night Owl is already there. Going to FBR? Have Super Bowl plans? Know a great restaurant, club, bar or event? Let me know and follow me @ bdiggs. Do it now and sign up. I talk about work, the Phoenix Suns, and everything Phoenix. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

Ignorance is Bliss By Kevin Breger, Esq. www.TheAZCriminalLawyer.com

Sam and Eric were on their way from Phoenix to Los Angeles for a weekend getaway. Sam was driving- it was his car - and Eric was the front seat passenger. They were a couple of hours outside of Phoenix when they decided to stop for a break: for them that translated to smoking a joint of marijuana behind the bushes on the side of the road. Unknown to Eric, Sam had an ulterior motive for going to Los Angeles – he had been paid to transport 5 ounces of heroin. Just as Sam and Eric were getting back into Sam’s car, a police officer pulled up and smelled “the odor of marijuana”. The officer searched both of them and the car. The officer found a small amount of marijuana on Eric. In the center console of the car he found the heroin. Both Sam and Eric were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, a class 6 felony; possession of drug paraphernalia, a class 6 felony; and transportation of narcotic drugs for Sale, a class 2 felony. Because the amount of heroin exceeded the statutory threshold, if convicted of the “transportation” charge, they were both looking at mandatory time in prison. Eric genuinely did not know that Sam had the heroin in the car, but the county prosecutor was not about to give Eric the benefit of the doubt. Would or should Eric be convicted of the transportation charge at trial? In order for Eric to be convicted of the offense, the State would have to prove all of the elements of the offense “beyond a reasonable doubt”. Without going into the specifics of all of the elements, the two elements that the state would have the most difficulty with are “knowingly” and “possessed”. To possess means “knowingly to have physical possession or otherwise to exercise dominion or control over property.” The law recognizes two types of possession: actual possession (for example when it is on your person) or constructive possession. In Eric’s case, the State would try and argue that Eric was in constructive possession i.e., that he exercised dominion or control over the property because

he was sitting in the passenger seat right next to where the heroin was and he could reach into the center console. Also, he possessed marijuana so he must have known that there were other drugs present in the car. The good news is that the law should not hold Eric accountable. See for example the case of State v. Curtis, 114 Ariz. 527, 562 P.2d 407 (App. 1977). In Curtis, the defendant was present at a person’s home when officers arrived to execute a warrant. The defendant was sitting in the same room as two other people. A baggie of marijuana was present. There was no evidence to suggest that the defendant had smoked the marijuana or had anything on her person that was incriminating. The court did believe that the defendant knew that marijuana was being smoked by the others in the room. The defendant was charged with possession of marijuana and convicted. On appeal, the appeal court ruled that “The evidence was insufficient to take the case to the jury and a judgment of acquittal should have been granted.” Assuming that justice (and good representation) prevails, Eric should likewise not be held accountable for the narcotics. . .

Glendale- The Arizona Cardinals have defied the odds and the prognosticators, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 32-25 last Sunday in Glendale to claim their sideline at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa for a February 1st Super Bowl showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who defeated the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship, 23-14. For the third straight post season weekend, the Cardinals supplemented a Kurt Warner to Larry Fitzgerald air raid with aggressive, timely defense. Up 24-6 at halftime behind three Fitzgerald TD catches (9rec, 152yds, 3TDs) and a Neil Rackers field goal, the Cardinals had to fight off a mad Eagle scramble in the second half, when two Donovan McNabb TD throws to Brent Celek and rookie Desean Jackson, then a David Akers field goal, translated into a 25-24 Philly lead with 10:45 to go in the 4th quarter. Unlike seasons past,

these resilient Cardinals maintained their composure and kept focus despite coming out in the second period without the fire that got them there. Warner (21/28, 279yds, 4TDs), Fitzgerald, and RBs Edgerrin James and rookie Tim Hightower took over after the Eagles’ last score, putting together a 72-yard drive that culminated in an 8-yard Warner to Hightower TD pass. Though McNabb (28/47, 375yds, 3TDs, 1Int) had a good day overall, the defense forced two fumbles and picked him off once, and held the dangerous Brian Westbrook to 71 total yards and the Eagles running game to 97 yards. It was another statement of toughness from a supposedly offensive-minded team; a statement that has resulted in the Cardinals’ first-ever Super Bowl appearance and is the official end to a 60+ year drought of futility.

Los Angeles, CA- The historical disparity between #15 ASU’s and #7 UCLA’s basketball programs resembles that between an apple, and, oh, say the blue prize-winner in the ‘Largest Pumpkin’ contest at the Kansas county fair. The present day Sun Devils, however, did a number on the Bruins last Saturday with an exhilarating 61-58 overtime win that represented a significant step in narrowing the teams’ hoops culture divide. Midway through the second half the score was 54-43 Bruins, and it looked as if ASU was going to go 0-2 against the SoCal bad boys, having lost earlier in the week to USC, when James Harden (24pts, 4rebs, 1ast) went 0-8 and was held to 4 points. But the Sun Devils rallied behind timely buckets from Harden and senior leader Jeff Pendergraph (18pts, 7rebs, 1ast), while utilizing a match-up zone defense that flummoxed UCLA for a long stretch in the second half. Junior Derek Glasser (6pts, 5rebs, 4asts) provided his typical steady floor leadership, and demonstrated big-game clutch nerve by hitting the game’s final two free throws with 11 seconds left.

‘09 Coors Light Birds Nest: The Year’s Biggest, Best Party

January 28th-31st

know how much fun it is and how many people will be there. Then we’ll have VJs Roonie G. (see CLUB!, pg. 14) and Pinky Lieb performing, who are some of the best entertainers in the country.”

There is a curious little secret about living in the Valley that new residents or visitors might not know about: When we find an excuse to throw a wild party, we make a tradition out of it. Annually drawing tens of thousands of people, the 2009 Coors Light Birds Nest is one of the country’s more magnificent magnets of festive mayhem, though it technically falls under the heading of a ‘community event’. True to its beloved custom, and resistant to pervading economic deterrents, the creators and collaborators for Birds Nest ’09 have expanded and improved this mind-blowing annual experience in ways worthy of at least one night’s visit this time around.

The theme of an all-senses onslaught is further enhanced by the ‘un-tent-like’ environs of this year’s party. “We’re really trying to create a club atmosphere,” explains Wright. “There will be carpet laid down and curtains, cabanas, a revolving projection screen, laser light shows; so it doesn’t even feel like a tent at all. It was created to resemble a huge ball room. From open ‘till close, there will be no breaks in entertainment. There was a big effort made to upgrade, to let people have a fun yet comfortable experience. We also realize that people don’t really like $15 drinks and waiting in line to pay a cover charge, so drinks will be affordable and there shouldn’t be many problems with lines.”

Christopher Titus jokes about things most comics would find impossible to make funny. Custody battles, insanity, family suicides, heart attacks, and fist fighting his father are all topics to be confronted, not hidden from. Christopher is one of the best headliners in the country with a unique and insightful act based on his oneof-a-kind life experiences. Titus is that most rare of comics in that his material is edgy and pushes the envelope, but is still accessible and meaningful to the common audience. Christopher’s stand-up television appearances include NBC’s “Comedy Showcase” and “Friday Night!”, A & E’s “An Evening At The Improv” and “Caroline’s Comedy Hour,” and Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend.” He was the star, executive producer and co-creator of the FOX hit sitcom “Titus,” a dark comedy based on “Norman Rockwell Is Bleeding.” Titus can currently be seen on ABC’s hit show “Big Shots”. Time Magazine called Titus brutal, hilarious and audacious, while Newsday called him TV’s most original comic voice since ‘Seinfeld’. Come see this edgy and charismatic comedian and his hilarious routine at the Tempe Improv January 22-25. Infiniti M-35 Sedan Reviews and photos by Chad Haire

If you want German car performance, but don’t want the high price tag and maintenance headaches, the Infiniti M-35 may be for you. This car offers true sport performance, with responsive steering, firm brakes, and tight cornering ability on mountain roads. The ride is also extremely comfortable. The 3.5 liter V-6 engine is quick, and hooked to a slick 5-speed automatic gearbox with manual shift override. The quality of the cabin is excellent. The navigation, climate, and sound system controls are placed in a pod in the center dash, and easy to use once learned. The base price starts at $43,000. With typical upgrades like navigation, upgraded stereo, and other goodies, we hit $48,763. A larger 4.5 liter V-8 engine with 325 horses is offered, but will set you back $55,000.

but not enough to worry about. The old inline six-cylinder engine has been replaced by a stock Dodge V-6 that puts out more power, and gets better fuel economy. I got 13 mpg in hard dirt driving, 15 in the city, and 22 at freeway cruising. The new suspension is more comfortable, and this longer wheelbase makes it more so. The base price for a Wrangler starts at $20,000. A loaded 4-door can hit the $30,000 mark with ease. I you like driving off-road, it’s hard to beat a Wrangler.

AWESOME LUBE & TUNE

GETH CASLD!

The Jeep Wrangler is great off-road, but has always lacked interior room for hauling extra people and gear. To solve this problem, the Jeep folks introduced the 4-door version. What a great idea! It seats four full-size passengers, yet has plenty of room for camping gear in the back. The inside is nothing fancy; everything is simple and rugged. The longer wheelbase does reduce some of the off-road ability due to wider U-turns,

Interview with Keith Nelson of Buckcherry SCAA Concert Series Continues with Barry Douglas Scottsdale- Barry Douglas will perform Schumann’s Three Romances, Op. 28, and Sonata No. 1 in F-sharp minor, Florestan und Eusebius; Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit; and Scriabin’s Sonata No. 5 in F-sharp Major, Op. 53., as part of the Virginia G. Piper concert series at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church (25150 North Pima Road in Scottsdale) on Sunday January 25th at 7:30pm. Hailed as “a supremely talented and genuine artist,” Barry Douglas is one of the most versatile and brilliant pianists of today. A native of Ireland, Douglas received international recognition as the gold medalist at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow, the first nonRussian to earn this prestigious award since Van Cliburn. He has performed with many of the world’s top orchestras and collaborated with eminent conductors such as Kurt Masur, Lorin Maazel and

Michael Tilson Thomas. Visit www. barry-douglas.com or www.sccarts.org for more information.

O.A.R.: College Buddies Make Good AZ Weekly Magazine: Is there anything you perceive to be different about Southwest rock shows, or southwestern audiences, than those in the Midwest? Jerry DePizzo: We play the Celebrity Theater out here, and it’s definitely one of the loudest auditoriums I’ve been in. But when we play a show at ASU, it’s not like we can tell where everyone is from, so there’s no difference really, other than that people in general look much nicer, tan, you know.

Jobing.com Arena Friday, January 30th Buckcherry is touring with Avenged Sevenold in support of their 2008 release, Black Butterfly. Lead guitarist Keith Nelson took some time out of his busy schedule to join us in some friendly Q&A. They will be at jobing.com arena in Glendale on Friday, January 30th. AZ Weekly Magazine: So, you’re coming to Glendale on the 30 ; are you looking forward to the tour? Keith Nelson: Oh yeah! We are a live band and we live on the road and this is the longest break we’ve had without working. We took a month off and it just felt weird to us. We’re all itchin’ to get back out there and get in front of people again. th

AZW: Did the bands actually have anything to do with the ticket prices being so reasonable at $40? KN: Yeah we had a lot to do with that actually. It was definitely our goal, you know, especially in these rough economic times that we are experiencing. We want to go out there and provide for people without breaking the bank, and we are keeping the price of our merchandise down along with our ticket prices. AZW: Well, we appreciate it... We hear that you really took your time writing the new CD Black Butterfly. Was there very much pressure to write a successful follow up to 15? KN: Well, I think we put more pressure on ourselves then anybody from the outside could ever put on us. But, for me personally, I just stay in the mind set of just doing what we do. I was really trying not to pay any attention to the stuff outside of the song in front of us and just deliver what it is we do, ya know? AZW: Josh Todd, what an amazing front man. How did you guys meet? KN: A tattoo artist who had worked on both of us about 12 years ago introduced us. We got together and started writing some songs, then shortly thereafter it started to click into something that was really cool, so we kept following it.

34

AZW: Where do you see yourself after all of this? KN: After all this? Oh this is never going to end! January 22nd - January 28th, 2009

They started making some real noise on the Billboard top internet sales chart, and by the time they released their fourth album in 2002, Any Time Now, they had sold over 1 million albums over their time together. Since then, they have sold out shows in Madison Square Garden, played three days in the Gorge with Dave Matthews Band, participated in a Darfur fund-raiser in Central Park, and created the theme song for the hit TV show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Things are going well for these humble, talented MidWestern kids, and when you hear their musical product, you’ll know why. Meet Jerry and Richard of O.A.R.

AZW: What is the message you try to impart to your audience, and what’s your favorite kind of audience to play for? JD: We write what we want to write, so it’s about our experiences, really. I don’t know that there’s a deeper message we try to put out. Playing in front of 19,000 people at Madison Square Garden was surreal, and it gave us the kind of feeling like, ‘We made it’. But there have also been really good shows that we’ve done for only 50100 people, too, so it’s mostly about the energy. AZW: What do you guys do when you’re off tour? RO: You know, when I’m not touring, I look forward to doing nothing. Being on tour is exhausting. AZW: Describe how you maintain a normal life, if you do, when you’re on the road. JD: Sometimes it’s hard, because you miss weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, that sort of thing. But eventually you get to the point where you view the road as a normal part of life. I have a pretty simple routine really, get up, eat breakfast, exercise, then go to the sound check.

Apartment for Rent with Utilities Included http://www.apartmentrentingtips.com According to a survey done by one consumer group, the factors that people consider when renting an apartment are price, area, location and amenities. This is because the tenant has determined a certain budget and would like it to be very accessible. Given these factors, real estate developers first analyze a certain area before deciding to turn an old building or an empty piece of land into an apartment complex. One of the things that people ever include in the package is the utility. These are mainly composed of water, heat and electricity. But is it really impossible to find a place that offers this already for free? The answer is no because some homeowners and landlords advertise these in the papers. The rent will be a little more expensive than those that do not offer it but people will realize it’s a good offer given that some of these homes are quite big. It is easier to find many of these in the Internet because there is a separate website that features this for the public. A general description is usually shown such as how many rooms are in the house and other things it has inside. The tenant will have to call or write an email back to schedule an appointment and should the person like it, certain requirements have to be given to ensure this will not be offered to other people. The landlord will usually request for a onemonth deposit and 3 months worth of rent in advance. The contract will usually be for a year that is renewable. Most of these places will not allow smoking and pets roaming around to preserve peace and cleanliness.

bedrooms and up will go for a $1,000 a month. People should remember that location plays a factor in dictating the price. Those that just want a room can get one for less than $800 a month. The only catch is that the bathroom is shared which tells the individual that much about privacy. The person should not forget to do some checking before signing anything. This includes checking the place for cracks or leaks. New apartments wont have this problem but this should be brought to the attention of the landlord if it is quite old for repair before moving in. Another thing to find out is how the crime rate is in that part of the neighborhood. The police department will sure have statistics for this, which can also be verified, by having a chat with the neighbors, which will also give the tenant a feel for the environment. If there are kids, it will be a good idea to check the quality of education in the schools nearby before enrolling. The grocery should be very accessible so that the family can just replenish the supplies when these run out. If the individual is single and finds rent to be a bit expensive, another way to get it will be to share this with a friend. This will surely bring back memories of staying in a dorm in college, which is quite big and has other things such as cable and high speed Internet that is very convenient who do a lot of work using a computer. The quest to find apartments that offer utilities will be a bit challenging. There are others who also want this so it is just a matter of finding the place first and signing a contract.

The price for many apartments that are 2

Monroe St. in Phoenix. The series, which runs through April 2009, is sponsored by Arizona State University Online, the Herberger Theater Center, Brotha Love Productions and Southwest Green Magazine. Cole, a well-known Valley jazz artist, ascended into the national and international consciousness after relocating to Arizona from her native Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1992. The move sparked the inception of her very first release, Piece of My Soul, (1996). The sultry-voiced singer was praised by

critics for the smoky tonality of her voice and emotional quality of her songs. Proceeds from the concert series will support the Green Survival Initiative (GSI), a Phoenixbased sustainability project. Through the use of cost-effective green technologies such as compact fluorescent lights, low-flow shower heads and water heater blankets, GSI seeks to mitigate increasing energy costs for approximately 1,000 low and fixed-income households in the Phoenix metropolitan area. A green networking event begins at 5:30pm, followed by the concert at 6:45pm. Admission is $20 for or $40 for VIP seating and $10 for ASU students with valid ID; call the Herberger Theater box office at (602) 254-7399 or visit www.HerbergerTheater. org. Last week, Las Vegas was swarming with technical gadgets galore as the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show eclipsed the bright lights of the strip. As a regular attendee of this show, I can tell you that it is just plain madness, and although there is way too much electronic euphoria to cover in one article, I will share with you some of the best gadgets that we have to look forward to over the coming months.

One of the hottest products of the show was the new Palm Pre. This slick new device makes it easy to control your communications whether you like to IM, text, e-mail, or make that rare phone call. This device includes a large multi-touch screen, accelerometer, QWERTY keyboard, GPS, Wi-Fi and a 3.2-megapixel camera. The new Palm Web OS really brings a fresh approach to interacting with your device and does an efficient job of organizing your information. Watch out iPhone! T here is a new ‘must have’ phone on the horizon. The Palm Pre won a Best of CES 2009 Award, including Best in Show and the People’s Voice Award.

Dick Tracy doesn’t have anything on the LG GD910 Watch Phone that was all the rage at CES. It has a touch screen that responds well to light touches and gestures, and the tiny onscreen dial pad was easy to use. The microphone and speaker on the phone are good enough to have conversations with your wrist by your side. Sorry ladies, it only comes in the manly size. You can check out more from the show by simply typing CES in your favorite web browser.

It’s time to think differently about Computer Service

We have continued to see many companies come out with smaller and less expensive laptops, and Sony is no newcomer to this category. Sony’s new Lifestyle PC is impressive with a native resolution of 1,600 by 768 that really fills up the screen (others mostly use a 1,024 X 600 resolution). A neat feature is by the touch of a button it will boot into a Linux environment, rather than wait a full minute for Windows to boot up, giving you have access to all your physical drives, network connections, and applications, like Skype and the Firefox Web browser. This is one cool mini-Notebook.

As an owner of a tech shop, I hear time and time again that folks aren’t backing up their data because it is just too difficult. This new Clickfree Transformer Cable is here to help. This is set-it-and-forget-it backup for the super busy. No need to install backup software; you just plug any USB drive into the cable, then plug the cable into your PC, and let it do the job. The drive will automatically begin backing up. Now there’s truly no excuse for not backing up.
