NATALIE IRISH The Festival is known for showcasing thousands of works of art in every imaginable style, but Texas artist Natalie Irish is sure to turn heads this year with her eye-popping celebrity portraits created with lipstick and hundreds of her carefully planted kisses. Irish will be in residence throughout the weekend exhibiting her works and demonstrating her unconventional artistic technique that recently has attracted international headlines from The Huffington Post, Yahoo!, Time, Glamour and Daily Mail. The YouTube video of Irish at work on a portrait of Marilyn Monroe has been viewed more than 500,000 times.

C!RCA , a bold new performing company from Australia, will dazzle on the Webb Center stage with daredevil acrobatics, impossible contortions and thrilling dance. The troupe’s acrodancers bend their bodies as they bend the rules of traditional circus utilizing improvisation, multimedia, light, sound and startling re-imagined circus skills. Based in the origins of Cirque du Soleil, C!RCA is performed without a lot of circus trappings like props, sets and fancy costumes. Instead, it reveals the strength of the human body. complication as he works tirelessly and hilariously to keep his suspicious wives from running into each other and to keep all of his stories straight. It all starts to fall apart when John is injured in a mugging and the police return him to the wrong wife at the wrong time. To make matters worse his picture appears in the local paper and the police show up to investigate how two men named John Smith with two different addresses were both mugged on the same day. Run For Your Wife is a fast paced, slapstick, laugh a minute romp that leaves you in stitches and begging for more. Run For Your Wife will be at the Broadway Palm through March 24, 2012. GREAT AMERICAN BARBEQUE & BEER FESTIVAL IN CHANDLER ANNOUNCES MUSIC LINEUP Largest outdoor barbeque festival in Arizona set to bring Music, BBQ, Brew, Entertainment and Plenty of Family Fun Saturday, March 24th 2012 The Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival, scheduled for Saturday, March 24, 2012, has announced its lineup of national music acts. Face to Face, Goldfinger, and Voodoo Glow Skulls will rock out the popular festival that celebrates the rich American tradition of BBQ, brew and bands. The Festival will begin at noon and run until 8 p.m., but reach a fever pitch at 2 p.m. when Buck-O-Nine, an American ska punk band from San Diego, kicks off an impressive lineup of national bands. Then at 3:15 p.m., the Voodoo Glow Skulls ignite the action with a 45-minute set of frenzied ska punk. Goldfinger, a California ska punk band that got its moniker from the James Bond film of the same name, hits the stage at 4:30 p.m. for a furious one-hour set. Goldfinger reached No. 5 on the U.S. record charts with Here in Your Bedroom. The Festival headliner is Face to Face, taking the stage at 6 p.m. for a two-hour set of in-your-face, raucous So Cal punk. Face To Face rose to fame in the 1990s with its album Big Choice, featuring radio hit Disconnected. To accommodate the growing number of BBQ fans, HDE has more than doubled the amount of event space, food vendors and kegs of beer from 2011. (NR – 93 minutes) Joseph: “The best animated features make viewers forget all about the fact that they are essentially just a rapid display of images that creates the illusion of movement. ‘Chico & Rita’ does exactly that, encouraging viewers to believe the characters on the screen are real, living and breathing entities. In fact, it does a whole lot more, too, giving life to its love story in a way that even very few live-action romances are capable of achieving. The only thing that is more dazzlingly beautiful and provocatively sexy than the story is the visual format through which it is told.” Grade: B
Stan: “As always, when the works of William Shakespeare’s plays are adapted to modern settings, ‘Ten Things I Hate About You’(1999), based on‘The Taming of the Shrew’, and Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Romeo + Juliet’(1996) come to mind, one definitely has to be well-grounded in Shakespeare’s works. It’s a tall challenge for debut director / veteran actor Ralph Fiennes who captures the essence of the era for the play’s original setting as the theme of determination and vengeance is transported to modern times.” Grade: C+ Joseph: “For his directorial debut, Ralph Fiennes contemporizes William Shakespeare’s play ‘Coriolanus.’ He literally takes that tale and, maintaining its language, places it within a modern-day context. Such a strange juxtaposition sounds like an interesting idea at first. However, it does not take long for one to realize

Perhaps this is because the movie’s story is so familiar, coming across as just a ‘save the princess’ fairy tale that Disney never got around to animating.” Grade: C

To be a part of the final product is really exciting. “I was at Sony Pictures Studios watching them score the film and I got to meet Michael Giacchino, which was a dream of mine because I love his work. I got to watch his orchestra perform the finale and the music was epic. It is going to be a really fun ride and I hope that everyone loves it.” – Daryl Sabara
Filmmaker Andrew Okpeaha MacLean (‘On the Ice’) By Joseph J. Airdo “It is not as bad as you might think but the cold is definitely something that you have to prepare for. We got the equipment ready for it and nothing major broke down – at least not
from the cold anyway. We kept the crew warm with the proper clothing – gloves, mittens and heavy boots – which adds time because it makes people work a little slower and that is always an issue. “But the biggest difficulty we had was shooting at the locations that were out on the ice. We were actually shooting on the frozen ocean and that is not an entirely stable platform. If the wind blows from the wrong direction, it could actually blow the pieces of ice that you are on out to sea. So you want to make sure that you are aware of what the conditions are and if the wrong wind kicks up you have got to get off of the ice in a hurry. “The setting was one of the things that was a real inspiration for this script. You have these big, wideopen vistas when you are out on the frozen ocean. You are surrounded by this monochromatic blankness that gives you a feeling of freedom and that ‘beyond the frontier’ sense of a western. Anything can happen and you are a little bit outside of the reach of normal laws and morality. We tried to make use of that and the danger that it implies.” – Andrew Okpeaha MacLean
“‘A Thousand Words’ is a lighthearted comedy, which is good thing in this world we live in, while also accentuating the value of your word as a human being, with the primary question of what is your word worth! I know I’ve said things that I’ve regret in my life and I can’t take them back. I think that it’s good when you have a light hearted comedy that is really worth seeing that one can get a bit more out of it than just comedy. There’s a really good legitimate premise here that really brings home the point that there is a value to the words we use in our lives, especially in relationships to our integrity, with the relationship to our spouse, our children and family, the work place. Our words represent our values, integrity, and most importantly our relationship with our own lives. A combination of a light hearted comedy with thought provoking, ethical, philosophical inspiration is always a very good thing. For my character and although its grounded with a comedic edge, the director wanted someone who could believably be a guru, come across as somebody who knew what he was doing, and wasn’t making Eddie Murphy’s character look ridiculous and at the same time not resorting to stereotyping for either character, but rather a believably spiritual person to guide Eddie’s (Murphy) character.” – Cliff Curtis

Suggest to Ashley Judd that her latest character is right in her wheelhouse, and she won’t disagree. After playing heroines-against-all-odds in such movies as “Kiss the Girls,” “Double Jeopardy” and “High Crimes,” the former “Sisters” regular is proud to say she’s doing her own stunts for her television return in the ABC actiondrama series “Missing,” premiering Thursday, March 15. Judd stars as Becca Winstone, whose son (Nick Eversman) vanishes 10 years after he saw his CIA agent father (played by Sean Bean) apparently killed. She also was an intelligence operative, and she calls those skills back into play as her search takes her across Europe. “This was a really good fit for me,” Judd says of filming “Missing” on location. “It was only 10 episodes, which allowed me to stay really involved with the balance of my life. It has the power of a network behind it, and the premise is simple and unforgettable. The producers made quite an impression on me, and as I look back on our season and the remarkable places where we filmed, what continues to stand out for me are the people ... the quality of the relationships, and how much I enjoyed all my co-workers.” Still, Judd wasn’t sure about doing “Missing” at first, though being overseas is something she’s used to; she and husband Dario Franchitti – the two-time Indianapolis 500-winning race driver – maintain a home in Scotland. “As much as I like to travel, I also really like to be home,” she notes. “I started to feel a little concerned about the length of the commitment, and a friend of mine sighed, ‘Oh, my gosh. Europe in the summer? How bad can it be?’ And that took me out of my concern.”

TRUE MASTER CRAFTSMAN Those Who Write About Beer
Just as there is an art to brewing great beer, there is an art to writing about great beer. And while many people attempt it, there are only a small handful that truly do a good job with it. Sadly, I am not in that group, but I do know of several people that are and thought it would be fun to talk about them a little bit and give you an opportunity to find something to read about, beer-related, that’s better than this. I mean something besides the back of the bottle. Anyway, here is a look at some of the top beer journalists and writers.
The dean of all beer writers has to be Michael Jackson (not that one, the other one). Jackson is probably the most famous of all beer writers and an inspiration to most current ones. He came to the attention of the beer community back in 1977 when his first book, The World Guide to Beer, was published. This book has been reprinted several times and translated in to ten different languages. More importantly, this book set the groundwork for the modern theory of Beer Styles. In the World Guide, Jackson categorized beers in to styles commonly used today, based on local traditions and names. Jackson was always very good at putting his beer reviews in context as local culture for each beer was always a prominent part of his writing. It is this writing that inspired young brewers in many cities throughout the latter part of the twentieth century to create their own local beer cultures. This March 8th, 2012 - March 14th, 2012
seminal work, along with President Jimmy Carter’s signing of a small law legalizing homebrewing provided the base for the craft beer explosion we see today.
Michael Jackson went on to be a prolific writer, penning twenty books and providing copious amounts of copy for newspapers and magazines. He also had a show on The Discovery Channel aptly titled The Beer Hunter. Others have tried to usurp this name, but there is only one who can claim the title. What has Jackson said about Arizona? He only made a couple of visits here, but in 1997, he spoke highly of the fledgling McFarlane Brewing located on South 29th Street in Phoenix. McFarlane’s is no longer with us, but a few years ago, Papago Brewing pulled out an eight year old keg of their barley wine and it was still spectacular. The only other thing he had to say about Phoenix beer was not complimentary, but it should be noted that his disparaging comments were made upon tasting the Chili Beer that seems to be all many tourists know about beer in this state. Jackson, who was also a world famous whiskey critic, passed away on August 30th, 2007 at his home in London.

Many people know Eckhardt simply as Fred, which is convenient, because Portland brewery, Hair of the Dog honored him by naming a beer, “Fred.” Fred, the beer, is a big, bold, flavorful product which provides a wonderful drinking experience, and, as further homage to its namesake, ages well. Fred also may be the only beer personality to have his very own beer festival. Fredfest is a small event held in May of each year to commemorate Eckhardt’s birthday. It always features
Fred Eckhardt’s primary beat is the Pacific Northwest, one of the meccas of craft beer. Eckhardt, now 86 years old, was a contemporary of Jackson and remains an active writer, critic and historian. His reputation for being a bit of a character in his hometown, Portland, has also made him a “beer personality.” He is known as a homebrewer and advocate for craft beer. In previous articles, we have talked about San Francisco as being a premiere beer destination, so of course they have plenty of local bloggers and beer writers. Quite possibly the best of these, and one of the best in the country, is Jay Brooks. Brooks, who was a former corporate buyer for BevMo, maintains an incredibly informative blog titled Brookston Beer Bulletin (www.brookstonbeerbulletin. com). Prior to that, Brooks was the General Manager of the Celebrator Beer News, a national “brewspaper.” He has also been active as a freelance writer

regionally, nationally and internationally. The man whom Brooks would consider the top beer writer in the Bay Area was named William Brand, who wrote a regular column in the Oakland Tribune. Brand was tragically killed in an accident in 2008 and Brooks took over the column of his close friend. On the other coast, Philadelphia is a hotbed of great beer, both high end imports and craft. Somehow despite Pennsylvania’s archaic liquor laws, this city has become one of the best beer cities in the country. Right in the middle of this incredible beer scene is Lew Bryson. Bryson is self described
as the award-winning, beer-drinking, whiskey-sipping, brewery-visiting, casktapping, thirst-creating drinks writer. He certainly fits that bill. He maintains a terrific blog titled, Seen Through a Glass, has an informative web site (www. lewbryson.com) and has inked several books covering the history of brewing in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and New Jersey. Bryson also writes from time to time for national publications and is one of the first people called when local media needs a “beer perspective”. His latest crusade has him taking on the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, and attempting to bring them into slightly more modern times, if not abolish them outright. These efforts alone are worth checking out his web site. There are many other truly good beer writers out there, each with his or her own specialty – and each with his or her own perspective on beer. Many of them are regional in scope and write for blogs, local papers, regional magazines and “brewspapers” (there is that word again, isn’t it kind of a neat concept?). To find them, just look for a copy of Celebrator, Ale Street News, Southwest Brewing News, DRAFT Magazine or any of the others you can find online or at the newsstand. If we all continue to drink and discuss great beer, who knows, maybe someday Arizona will even have a decent beer writer to call our own. Until then, you’re stuck with me. Let’s go have a beer.

Sugarfoot’s Ohio Players will be joined by original members from Lakeside, Confunkshun, The Bar-Kays and Dazz Band for the Masters of Funk tour set for 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 10th at the intimate Celebrity Theatre. Considered the cream of ‘70s funk, the Ohio Players are back on the road, this time emphasizing the distinctive voice and musical style of its frontman, Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner. In 1971, he hooked up with a band in Dayton, Ohio called the Ohio Untouchables, but when he joined as singer and guitarist, they changed their name to Ohio Players. Within two years, the group cracked the Billboard charts and in 1974 scored the first of three platinum-selling albums with Skin Tight. No.1 hits followed such as “Fire” and “Love Rollercoaster.”
California, the solid gold and platinum record sellers are still as popular as ever with such timeless classics as “Love’s Train,” “Too Tight” and “the #1 dance smash “Ffun.” The Bar-Kays’ 40-year musical odyssey has left an indelible mark on American music producing 27 albums (5 gold and 1 platinum), 37 singles (28 in the Top Ten) and an invitation into the Rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. The Quill is Back! Five years since their last studio album, the band is ready to once again spread its musical gospel at Club Red (2155 E. University Dr. in Tempe) on Monday, March 12th. The Swedish four-piece has been around since the nineties and has released six albums - The Quill (1995), Silver Haze (1999), Voodoo Caravan (2002), Hooray! It’s a Deathtrip (2003), In Triumph (2006), and after reforming in 2010, Full Circle (2011). The new album is packed with heavy rock firmly rooted in the seventies but vibrant and updated rather than retro. There’s a new twist to the new sound. Less is more, as they say. The songs are sharp, direct and catchy, built around big
riffs, big grooves and big hooks. “Sleeping With Your Enemy” has an insanely catchy hook. “Medicine” has an up-tempo outburst of energy. “Bring It On” simply rocks; it has very much of a classic rock sound but yet still has that contemporary feel in the Foo Fighters/Queens Of The Stone Age vein.

There are many benefits to being a lady night owl and I will mention a few here. Despite the fact that more than half the people reading this may already know the advantages of a being a female, I am aiming the following description for those (men) who remain curious as to what exactly we ladies get, that they do not. I am also describing these benefits to get back at all the times we women have had attention taken away from us due to the never-ending cycle of sports seasons and the buffoonery that goes along with the hundreds of hours watching football, basketball, baseball, hockey, etc., repeat. For most of us ladies, it takes hours to decide what to wear, what accessories to use, mascara applications, and how we’re going to do our hair. Most of the time, we come out feeling sexy and looking what we believe is smokin’ hot to the majority of people. Because of all the effort and sometimes inconvenience of wearing heels, we get to skip to the front of the line as long as we’re not with any boys, because of course, the boys in the club we’re trying to get into and look hot for, don’t want it turning into a sausage party. They also don’t want us limping unattractively across the room because of having to stand in line for way too long. Because happy drunk girls are more fun, we don’t have to pay cover and we get handed free drinks and/or drink tickets as soon as we walk in. We also get served at the bar first and even get offered to have our drinks paid for by the hopeful male bar patrons because as mentioned before, drunk girls are more “fun.” Yes indeed, we enjoy our line jumps and drinks gratis—all the world knows! Vegas, LA, and most importantly, Sister Scottsdale and that is why the fellas at The Mint are hosting the all new monthly affair: Soiree de la Femme. Wednesday is a premium day to get pretty for the weekend. The Mint will feature hairstyling by Primp and Blow as well as mini manicures as you sip the free champagne available from 9 – 11. There will also be drink and food specials from 3 to 7 and 10 to 2 when all plates on the

So, okay, I’ve never heard of Kelley James either but apparently he’s good enough to play in the presence of one of the decade’s highest paid pitchers, Mr. Zito himself. Kelley is known for his acoustic guitar tunes, hip-hop flavors, and witty lyrics—sounds like a musical feast for your ears, eh? It’s all to help raise cashflow for soldiers who were wounded at war and to help pump you up for another Spring Training season. The vertical drop, the snow quality, depth or frequency, if familyoriented, the skill levels attracted, the resort’s popularity and the quality of accommodations are only a few. Rarely are resorts rated equally across different ranking lists. This top United States ski resorts list centers around skill level differentiation and quality. Some may be well known, but there might be a surprise or two tucked here or there as well.
Ranking System Each entry is granted a ranking of 0 to 5 for each skill level, beginner through expert. If a resort has a reasonable amount of good slopes for each skill level, the resort would earn availability and quality points in each skill level. However, on the positive side, two bonus points are awarded if a resort has hosted a significant professional or Winter Olympic event in recent history.
