SHOWUP.COM

HOT SEAT OF THE WEEK Gypsy

presented by Phoenix Theatre at Phoenix Theatre Critically acclaimed as one of the great American musicals, Gypsy follows the dreams and desires of Mama Rose as she lives out her life onstage through her two daughters. Complete with a brilliant score by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim, this exquisitely-crafted musical casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business during the 1920s, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born. Based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, this classic musical features such popular Broadway standards as Let Me Entertain You, You’ll Never Get Away from Me, Together Wherever We Go, and Everything’s Coming up Roses.

At Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa - Saturday, March 10, 6pm Laugh, Have Fun and Celebrate a Magical night out that will transport you to a turn of the century experience. RUN FOR YOUR WIFE IS A RUNAWAY HIT! BROADWAY PALM EXTENDS RUN THRU MARCH 24TH!

Broadway Palm’s runaway hit show Run For Your Wife has been selling out performances since the show opened on January 12th. The theatre’s owner, Tom Prather has extended the run of the show once again. Run For Your Wife will now play thru March 24, 2012 in the Broadway Palm’s Marquee Theatre. Hilarious one-liners, mistaken identities and improbable situations have audiences laughing throughout the show and all the way home. Run For Your Wife is a superb example of British farce. John Smith is your ordinary London cab driver. He owns his own car, sets his own hours, is hard working, punctual and lives a very ordinary life…except for his two wives. He has successfully kept his two lives separate by spending mornings with Barbara and evenings with Mary. Complication is piled upon

complication as he works tirelessly and hilariously to keep his suspicious wives from running into each other and to keep all of his stories straight. It all starts to fall apart when John is injured in a mugging and the police return him to the wrong wife at the wrong time. To make matters worse his picture appears in the local paper and the police show up to investigate how two men named John Smith with two different addresses were both mugged on the same day. Run For Your Wife is a fast paced, slapstick, laugh a minute romp that leaves you in stitches and begging for more. Run For Your Wife will be at the Broadway Palm through March 24, 2012. Performances are Thursday through Sunday with selected weekend matinees. Ticket prices are $39 for buffet and show, $20 for show only. Tickets are on sale now and can be reserved by calling (480) 325-6700 or by stopping by the box office at 5247 E. Brown Rd. in Mesa. For additional information please visit the theatre’s website at BroadwayPalmWest.com.

Face to Face, Goldfinger, and Voodoo Glow Skulls will rock out the popular festival that celebrates the rich American tradition of BBQ, brew and bands. The Festival will begin at noon and run until 8 p.m., but reach a fever pitch at 2 p.m. when Buck-O-Nine, an American ska punk band from San Diego, kicks off an impressive lineup of national bands. Then at 3:15 p.m., the Voodoo Glow Skulls ignite the action with a 45-minute set of frenzied ska punk. Goldfinger, a California ska punk band that got its moniker from the James Bond film of the same name, hits the stage at 4:30 p.m. for a furious one-hour set. Goldfinger reached No. 5 on the U.S. record charts with Here in Your Bedroom. The Festival headliner is Face to Face, taking the stage at 6 p.m. for a two-hour set of in-your-face, raucous So Cal punk. Face To Face rose to fame in the 1990s with its album Big Choice, featuring radio hit Disconnected. To accommodate the growing number of BBQ fans, HDE has more than doubled the amount of event space, food vendors and kegs of beer from 2011. why people do not talk like this in real life, as we would never be able to get anything accomplished in the midst of so many long-winded, irrelevant speeches. After all, other than a commanding performance from Fiennes, the movie sure doesn’t.” Grade: D

The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases.

Randy Montgomery, AZ Weekly Film Critic

Listen to Joseph J. Airdo’s “Movie Maverick” radio segment, every Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. during “The Daily Blender with Jeffry O’Brien” on KBSZ - NBC 1260 AM and 96.1 FM

About the Film Columnists Stan Robinson, 65, is a retired first assistant director with more than 22 years of experience in film and media production. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at ScreenScene.org. Randy Montgomery, 34, works in media and marketing and holds a master’s degree in counseling and education. ‘Coriolanus’ Banished from the city he once served, a former war hero (Ralph Fiennes) joins forces with an old enemy (Gerard Butler) to bring about the downfall of Rome. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 122 minutes)

‘Chico & Rita’ A Cuban pianist becomes smitten with a sultry singer, but leading to a passionate but star-crossed romance that reaches across six decades. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (NR – 93 minutes) Joseph: “The best animated features make viewers forget all about the fact that they are essentially just a rapid display of images that creates the illusion of movement. ‘Chico & Rita’ does exactly that, encouraging viewers to believe the characters on the screen are real, living and breathing entities. In fact, it does a whole lot more, too, giving life to its love story in a way that even very few live-action romances are capable of achieving. The only thing that is more dazzlingly beautiful and provocatively sexy than the story is the visual format through which it is told.” Grade: B

Stan: “As always, when the works of William Shakespeare’s plays are adapted to modern settings, ‘Ten Things I Hate About You’(1999), based on‘The Taming of the Shrew’, and Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Romeo + Juliet’(1996) come to mind, one definitely has to be well-grounded in Shakespeare’s works. It’s a tall challenge for debut director / veteran actor Ralph Fiennes who captures the essence of the era for the play’s original setting as the theme of determination and vengeance is transported to modern times.” Grade: C+ Joseph: “For his directorial debut, Ralph Fiennes contemporizes William Shakespeare’s play ‘Coriolanus.’ He literally takes that tale and, maintaining its language, places it within a modern-day context. Such a strange juxtaposition sounds like an interesting idea at first. However, it does not take long for one to realize

‘Friends with Kids’ Complications arise when platonic buddies (Jennifer Westfeldt and Adam Scott) agree to a have baby but remain just pals. Also starring Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, John Hamm, Chris O’Dowd, Megan Fox and Edward Burns. (R – 100 minutes) Stan: “Visiting the familiar theme of ‘can two life long friends of the opposite sex continue a plutonic relationship’ when one wants the experience of raising a child, ‘Friends With Kids’ gives us a number of insightful moments and character portrayals because of the ensemble performances of the cast, is a solid ‘date movie’ for both the male and female of the species.” Grade: C+ Joseph: “The plot of filmmaker Jennifer Westfeldt’s latest romantic dramedy ‘Friends with Kids’ is nothing that we have not already seen several

ing story also won me over.” Grade: B Joseph: “Though it delivers a decent ride, ‘John Carter’ feels like blockbuster-light. That is to say that Disney’s new science-fiction adventure based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ books is very much a precursor to the summer movie season. Its visual effects are seamless and stunning yet one still cannot help but be a bit underwhelmed. Perhaps this is because the movie’s story is so familiar, coming across as just a ‘save the princess’ fairy tale that Disney never got around to animating.” Grade: C

A man (Eddie Murphy) tries to curtail his speech after learning he’ll die after he utters 1,000 more words. (PG-13 – 91 minutes)

The voice of ‘ET the ExtraTerrestrial’ is actress Debra Winger!

In Barrow, Alaska, two teenage best friends (Josiah Patkotak and Frank Qutuq Irelan) cause a tragic accident with another boy and weave a web of lies to avoid taking responsibility. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 96 minutes)

‘John Carter’ A human military commander (Taylor Kitsch) becomes embroiled in an epic conflict on Mars. Also starring Lynn Collins, Mark Strong, Ciran Hinds, Dominic West, Bryan Cranston and Daryl Sabara and featuring the voice talents of Samantha Morton, Willem Dafoe, and Thomas Hayden Church. (PG-13 – 132 minutes) Randy: “Out of all of the films slated for this season, one of the most hyped is Disney’s ‘John Carter.’ Despite the hype, I had little interest in seeing it. Honestly, I did not understand all of what happened and I am not quite sure it was worth the reported investment by the studio to get it made. But it was a good-looking 3D film with some amazing effects. The entertain-

tize action over intelligence? That person must have not yet seen ‘The Viral Factor,’ a new action-packed drama from Hong Kong filmmaker Dante Lam. Although an extended chase sequence in the middle of the movie is bound to take your breath away, the plot becomes too bloated to be taken seriously and no amount of gun fights and explosions will distract from its eventual absurdity.” Grade: D

‘The Viral Factor’ An International Security Affairs agent contemplates leaving the force until he learns his brother is working as a mercenary for a former colleague who betrayed their team. Playing exclusively at AMC Ahwatukee 24. (NR – 120 minutes)

Soundbite Spotlight

Stan: “Hong Kong filmmaker Dante Lam’s latest presents in grand style the familiar theme of a potential global bio-disease weapon in the wrong hands, the elite team out the quell the treat, while accentuating the underlying theme of reconciliation of family issues, is as non stop action ride. My favorite – a thrilling helicopters chase sequence between hi-rise skyscraper buildings sets a new bar for aerial action!” Grade: B Joseph: “Who ever said that America is the only country capable of creating big budget blockbusters that priori-

‘On the Ice’

Joseph: “There is really not too much to filmmaker Andrew Okpeaha MacLean’s new dramatic thriller ‘On the Ice.’ However, the unique pairing of this particular plot and this specific setting is enough to compensate for the story’s simplicity. After all, Alaska is the perfect place to reflect the chilly emotional journey that this movie’s characters are forced to take as a result of a tragic accident in which death is the consequence. One wonders whether their shivering is in response to the climate or the suspense.” Grade: C

Bet You Didn’t Know!

Actor Daryl Sabara (‘John Carter’) By Joseph J. Airdo “My grandfather read the ‘John Carter of Mars’ books to me when I was young, so I had been familiar with the story. times before. However, rarely is it exhibited with such a strong level of likeability and talent among its cast, which goes a long way toward engaging an audience – with one major caveat. Although the presence of stars Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph makes this look like a ‘Bridesmaids’ reunion, it may behoove you to know that the pair play mere supporting characters here.” Grade: C

Actor Cliff Curtis (‘A Thousand Words’) By Stan Robinson Actor Kiefer Sutherland, star of the TV series ‘24’ and the new TV series ‘Touch’ has a twin sister Rachel! ... continued from Page 19. from him. “When I did ‘Machete,’ I was going back and forth between Austin and Los Angeles to meet with the new director Andrew Stanton and [the lead actor] Taylor Kitsch. So, I had been aware of the project for a couple of years. To be a part of the final product is really exciting. “I was at Sony Pictures Studios watching them score the film and I got to meet Michael Giacchino, which was a dream of mine because I love his work. I got to watch his orchestra perform the finale and the music was epic. It is going to be a really fun ride and I hope that everyone loves it.” – Daryl Sabara

Filmmaker Andrew Okpeaha MacLean (‘On the Ice’) By Joseph J. Airdo “It is not as bad as you might think but the cold is definitely something that you have to prepare for. We got the equipment ready for it and nothing major broke down – at least not

from the cold anyway. We kept the crew warm with the proper clothing – gloves, mittens and heavy boots – which adds time because it makes people work a little slower and that is always an issue. “But the biggest difficulty we had was shooting at the locations that were out on the ice. We were actually shooting on the frozen ocean and that is not an entirely stable platform. If the wind blows from the wrong direction, it could actually blow the pieces of ice that you are on out to sea. So you want to make sure that you are aware of what the conditions are and if the wrong wind kicks up you have got to get off of the ice in a hurry. “The setting was one of the things that was a real inspiration for this script. You have these big, wideopen vistas when you are out on the frozen ocean. You are surrounded by this monochromatic blankness that gives you a feeling of freedom and that ‘beyond the frontier’ sense of a western. Anything can happen and you are a little bit outside of the reach of normal laws and morality. We tried to make use of that and the danger that it implies.” – Andrew Okpeaha MacLean

“‘A Thousand Words’ is a lighthearted comedy, which is good thing in this world we live in, while also accentuating the value of your word as a human being, with the primary question of what is your word worth! I know I’ve said things that I’ve regret in my life and I can’t take them back. I think that it’s good when you have a light hearted comedy that is really worth seeing that one can get a bit more out of it than just comedy. There’s a really good legitimate premise here that really brings home the point that there is a value to the words we use in our lives, especially in relationships to our integrity, with the relationship to our spouse, our children and family, the work place. Our words represent our values, integrity, and most importantly our relationship with our own lives. A combination of a light hearted comedy with thought provoking, ethical, philosophical inspiration is always a very good thing. For my character and although its grounded with a comedic edge, the director wanted someone who could believably be a guru, come across as somebody who knew what he was doing, and wasn’t making Eddie Murphy’s character look ridiculous and at the same time not resorting to stereotyping for either character, but rather a believably spiritual person to guide Eddie’s (Murphy) character.” – Cliff Curtis

Sean Bean, Ashley Judd, Cliff Curtis, Adriano Giannini, Nick Eversman and Tereza Voriskova (from left)

By Jay BoBBin

Suggest to Ashley Judd that her latest character is right in her wheelhouse, and she won’t disagree. After playing heroines-against-all-odds in such movies as “Kiss the Girls,” “Double Jeopardy” and “High Crimes,” the former “Sisters” regular is proud to say she’s doing her own stunts for her television return in the ABC actiondrama series “Missing,” premiering Thursday, March 15. Judd stars as Becca Winstone, whose son (Nick Eversman) vanishes 10 years after he saw his CIA agent father (played by Sean Bean) apparently killed. She also was an intelligence operative, and she calls those skills back into play as her search takes her across Europe. “This was a really good fit for me,” Judd says of filming “Missing” on location. “It was only 10 episodes, which allowed me to stay really involved with the balance of my life. It has the power of a network behind it, and the premise is simple and unforgettable. The producers made quite an impression on me, and as I look back on our season and the remarkable places where we filmed, what continues to stand out for me are the people ... the quality of the relationships, and how much I enjoyed all my co-workers.” Still, Judd wasn’t sure about doing “Missing” at first, though being overseas is something she’s used to; she and husband Dario Franchitti – the two-time Indianapolis 500-winning race driver – maintain a home in Scotland. “As much as I like to travel, I also really like to be home,” she notes. “I started to feel a little concerned about the length of the commitment, and a friend of mine sighed, ‘Oh, my gosh. Europe in the summer? How bad can it be?’ And that took me out of my concern.”

TRUE MASTER CRAFTSMAN Those Who Write About Beer

Just as there is an art to brewing great beer, there is an art to writing about great beer. And while many people attempt it, there are only a small handful that truly do a good job with it. Sadly, I am not in that group, but I do know of several people that are and thought it would be fun to talk about them a little bit and give you an opportunity to find something to read about, beer-related, that’s better than this. I mean something besides the back of the bottle. Anyway, here is a look at some of the top beer journalists and writers.

The dean of all beer writers has to be Michael Jackson (not that one, the other one). Jackson is probably the most famous of all beer writers and an inspiration to most current ones. He came to the attention of the beer community back in 1977 when his first book, The World Guide to Beer, was published. This book has been reprinted several times and translated in to ten different languages. More importantly, this book set the groundwork for the modern theory of Beer Styles. In the World Guide, Jackson categorized beers in to styles commonly used today, based on local traditions and names. Jackson was always very good at putting his beer reviews in context as local culture for each beer was always a prominent part of his writing. It is this writing that inspired young brewers in many cities throughout the latter part of the twentieth century to create their own local beer cultures. This March 8th, 2012 - March 14th, 2012

seminal work, along with President Jimmy Carter’s signing of a small law legalizing homebrewing provided the base for the craft beer explosion we see today.

Michael Jackson went on to be a prolific writer, penning twenty books and providing copious amounts of copy for newspapers and magazines. He also had a show on The Discovery Channel aptly titled The Beer Hunter. Others have tried to usurp this name, but there is only one who can claim the title. What has Jackson said about Arizona? He only made a couple of visits here, but in 1997, he spoke highly of the fledgling McFarlane Brewing located on South 29th Street in Phoenix. McFarlane’s is no longer with us, but a few years ago, Papago Brewing pulled out an eight year old keg of their barley wine and it was still spectacular. The only other thing he had to say about Phoenix beer was not complimentary, but it should be noted that his disparaging comments were made upon tasting the Chili Beer that seems to be all many tourists know about beer in this state. Jackson, who was also a world famous whiskey critic, passed away on August 30th, 2007 at his home in London.

magazines, Celebrator and All About Beer. Eckhardt also authored a must read book titled, The Essentials of Beer Styles, which furthered Jackson’s earlier work and covered new ground in continuing to define the many traditional as well as evolving beer styles in the world. Many people know Eckhardt simply as Fred, which is convenient, because Portland brewery, Hair of the Dog honored him by naming a beer, “Fred.” Fred, the beer, is a big, bold, flavorful product which provides a wonderful drinking experience, and, as further homage to its namesake, ages well. Fred also may be the only beer personality to have his very own beer festival. Fredfest is a small event held in May of each year to commemorate Eckhardt’s birthday. It always features

Fred Eckhardt’s primary beat is the Pacific Northwest, one of the meccas of craft beer. Eckhardt, now 86 years old, was a contemporary of Jackson and remains an active writer, critic and historian. His reputation for being a bit of a character in his hometown, Portland, has also made him a “beer personality.” He is known as a homebrewer and advocate for craft beer. Most of his articles have appeared in two beer AZWeeklyMagazine.com

some amazing rare beers and is a great celebration of the life of a true legend in the industry.

In previous articles, we have talked about San Francisco as being a premiere beer destination, so of course they have plenty of local bloggers and beer writers. Quite possibly the best of these, and one of the best in the country, is Jay Brooks. Brooks, who was a former corporate buyer for BevMo, maintains an incredibly informative blog titled Brookston Beer Bulletin (www.brookstonbeerbulletin. com). Prior to that, Brooks was the General Manager of the Celebrator Beer News, a national “brewspaper.” He has also been active as a freelance writer

regionally, nationally and internationally. The man whom Brooks would consider the top beer writer in the Bay Area was named William Brand, who wrote a regular column in the Oakland Tribune. Brand was tragically killed in an accident in 2008 and Brooks took over the column of his close friend. On the other coast, Philadelphia is a hotbed of great beer, both high end imports and craft. Somehow despite Pennsylvania’s archaic liquor laws, this city has become one of the best beer cities in the country. Right in the middle of this incredible beer scene is Lew Bryson. Bryson is self described

as the award-winning, beer-drinking, whiskey-sipping, brewery-visiting, casktapping, thirst-creating drinks writer. He certainly fits that bill. He maintains a terrific blog titled, Seen Through a Glass, has an informative web site (www. lewbryson.com) and has inked several books covering the history of brewing in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and New Jersey. Bryson also writes from time to time for national publications and is one of the first people called when local media needs a “beer perspective”. His latest crusade has him taking on the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, and attempting to bring them into slightly more modern times, if not abolish them outright. These efforts alone are worth checking out his web site. There are many other truly good beer writers out there, each with his or her own specialty – and each with his or her own perspective on beer. Many of them are regional in scope and write for blogs, local papers, regional magazines and “brewspapers” (there is that word again, isn’t it kind of a neat concept?). To find them, just look for a copy of Celebrator, Ale Street News, Southwest Brewing News, DRAFT Magazine or any of the others you can find online or at the newsstand. If we all continue to drink and discuss great beer, who knows, maybe someday Arizona will even have a decent beer writer to call our own. Until then, you’re stuck with me. Let’s go have a beer.

SMART RIDE DESIGNATED DRIVING SERVICE Getting You and Your Car Home Safely – 24/7… 365 Days a Year!

Happy Hour Tues-Fri, 4-7pm

Did you know that the human body produces alcohol naturally 24 hours a day called endogenous ethanol production? Some people’s bodies produce more than others, so when you go out and drink your BAC (blood alcohol level) can read higher than you would think. Smart Ride Designated Driving Service is here to drive you and your car home whenever you can’t. Our company, started by Jim in Canada, is now here in Arizona. Jim started the company after his nephew was killed by a drunk driver. His nephew was just a few minutes up the road - however by the time he got to the scene, he was already dead. In court, the drunk driver said the only reason he drove was because he needed his car home to get to work in the morning. That’s when he decided to create a designated driving company to drive you and your car home safely.

I always love going places that have a great mixture of people, and Bobby’s Latin Lounge is definitely one of those spots. Their happy hour is during the week and begins at 4pm. $2 imports, $3 imports/wines and half off appetizers are not a bad call when you’re just getting off work. Can’t forget about their complimentary buffet either during their happy hour offerings, it is simply awesome! This place can get a little crazy at night, but it’s pretty low key during the day. If you were lucky enough to see Van Halen back in the ‘80s you were witness to one of the most extraordinary live bands in the history of rock and roll, and if you didn’t, you had really missed out. . .until now! FAN HALEN brings back the party-time hard-rocking live music of “Classic” Van Halen with a true-to-life tribute to not only the band but the spirit of an era! FAN HALEN sets the stage for a night with David, Eddie, Alex and Michael (no Wolfgang here) in a transformation that has been described as “unbelievably authentic.”

As for the music, Van Halen’s catalog of songs was the sound track of the ‘80s. Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love, Jamies’ Cryin’, Dance The Night Away, Beautiful Girls,

Derek Fuller as Edward Van Halen recreates Edward’s classic guitar tone, playing every riff and solo with as much fury and technique as Edward himself, while capturing all of the enthusiasm and flash of Eddie’s engaging live personality. George DuBose as Michael Anthony looks strikingly like Michael and supplies the low-end bass groove, high-end energy, and most importantly the high harmony backing vocals, which is essential in delivering the quintessential signature sound of Van Halen. Larry Cornwall as Alex Van Halen behind his striped circa 1980 18-piece double-barreled bass drum Ludwig kit delivers the thunderous rhythms and heavy artillery with all the enthusiasm, energy and ear-to-ear grin that Alex brought to Van Halen. You won’t believe your eyes or ears when you come to see FAN HALEN as you’ll feel like its 1984 all over again! From the look of the band, the choreography, the note-for-note reproduction of the greatest rock songs ever written to the sonic energy of the performance, nothing is overlooked...in other words, while FAN HALEN is on stage they are Van Halen! Tickets are only $10 (2-for-1 tickets available for TSR Player Awards Members) and are available by calling the Talking Stick Resort Box Office at 480850-7734 or through Ticketmaster. com. For Table Reservations please call Eric Larson at 480-850-8641. Please visit FAN HALEN at www.fanhalen. com for show calendar, latest news and multimedia.

Sugarfoot’s Ohio Players will be joined by original members from Lakeside, Confunkshun, The Bar-Kays and Dazz Band for the Masters of Funk tour set for 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 10th at the intimate Celebrity Theatre. Considered the cream of ‘70s funk, the Ohio Players are back on the road, this time emphasizing the distinctive voice and musical style of its frontman, Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner. In 1971, he hooked up with a band in Dayton, Ohio called the Ohio Untouchables, but when he joined as singer and guitarist, they changed their name to Ohio Players. Within two years, the group cracked the Billboard charts and in 1974 scored the first of three platinum-selling albums with Skin Tight. No.1 hits followed such as “Fire” and “Love Rollercoaster.”

California, the solid gold and platinum record sellers are still as popular as ever with such timeless classics as “Love’s Train,” “Too Tight” and “the #1 dance smash “Ffun.” The Bar-Kays’ 40-year musical odyssey has left an indelible mark on American music producing 27 albums (5 gold and 1 platinum), 37 singles (28 in the Top Ten) and an invitation into the Rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. Well-known hits include “Freak Show On The Dance Floor,” “Sex-O-Matic,” “Dirty Dancer” and “Soul Finger.” Get ready for bass-slapping, synthdriven funk from Cleveland, Ohio as Dazz Band (short for “danceable jazz”) brings back those tight rhythms and smooth singing from the ‘80s. Hits include the Grammy-winning “Let It Whip” and the not-so-subtle sexual groove “Joystick.” Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets ($38 and $55) are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www. celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext. 1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is located just south of the 202 freeway, at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.

Take a “Fantastic Voyage” with Lakeside! Other mega hits include “All The Way Live,” “Raid,” “Something About That Woman” and “Outrageous.” The Lakeside journey began more than 27 years ago, when a group of high school students from Dayton, Ohio formed a band made up of talented musicians with ferocious stamina. ConFunkShun is unquestionably among the heroes of funk with romantic ballads and danceparty hits galore. Formed more than 35 years ago in Vallejo,

The Quill is Back! Five years since their last studio album, the band is ready to once again spread its musical gospel at Club Red (2155 E. University Dr. in Tempe) on Monday, March 12th. The Swedish four-piece has been around since the nineties and has released six albums - The Quill (1995), Silver Haze (1999), Voodoo Caravan (2002), Hooray! It’s a Deathtrip (2003), In Triumph (2006), and after reforming in 2010, Full Circle (2011). The new album is packed with heavy rock firmly rooted in the seventies but vibrant and updated rather than retro. There’s a new twist to the new sound. Less is more, as they say. The songs are sharp, direct and catchy, built around big

riffs, big grooves and big hooks. “Sleeping With Your Enemy” has an insanely catchy hook. “Medicine” has an up-tempo outburst of energy. “Bring It On” simply rocks; it has very much of a classic rock sound but yet still has that contemporary feel in the Foo Fighters/Queens Of The Stone Age vein.

We get you and your car home safely.

The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS

Soiree de la Femme at The Mint

Drinking and driving is 100% preventable.

www.smartridedd.com • (623) 328-9206 We are available 24/7 365 days a year.

There are many benefits to being a lady night owl and I will mention a few here. Despite the fact that more than half the people reading this may already know the advantages of a being a female, I am aiming the following description for those (men) who remain curious as to what exactly we ladies get, that they do not. I am also describing these benefits to get back at all the times we women have had attention taken away from us due to the never-ending cycle of sports seasons and the buffoonery that goes along with the hundreds of hours watching football, basketball, baseball, hockey, etc., repeat. For most of us ladies, it takes hours to decide what to wear, what accessories to use, mascara applications, and how we’re going to do our hair. Most of the time, we come out feeling sexy and looking what we believe is smokin’ hot to the majority of people. Because of all the effort and sometimes inconvenience of wearing heels, we get to skip to the front of the line as long as we’re not with any boys, because of course, the boys in the club we’re trying to get into and look hot for, don’t want it turning into a sausage party. They also don’t want us limping unattractively across the room because of having to stand in line for way too long. Because happy drunk girls are more fun, we don’t have to pay cover and we get handed free drinks and/or drink tickets as soon as we walk in. We also get served at the bar first and even get offered to have our drinks paid for by the hopeful male bar patrons because as mentioned before, drunk girls are more “fun.” Yes indeed, we enjoy our line jumps and drinks gratis—all the world knows! Vegas, LA, and most importantly, Sister Scottsdale and that is why the fellas at The Mint are hosting the all new monthly affair: Soiree de la Femme. Wednesday is a premium day to get pretty for the weekend. The Mint will feature hairstyling by Primp and Blow as well as mini manicures as you sip the free champagne available from 9 – 11. There will also be drink and food specials from 3 to 7 and 10 to 2 when all plates on the

menu by Chef Johnny Chu are $2 off and beer, wine, champagne, and cocktails are half price. Wednesday, March 7th. 9 pm – 2 am. 7373 E. Camelback Rd. Ages 21+

Spring Training Strikeout at W Scottsdale Baseball players and fans from all over the country will be in the desert once again for spring training. The influx of people and arrival of so many cheap games and daytime drinking calls for a carousal of Scottsdale’s finest at the W’s Shade lounge this Saturday where national recording artist, Kelley James, will be performing to help raise money for Barry Zito’s “Strikeout for the Troops” charity. So, okay, I’ve never heard of Kelley James either but apparently he’s good enough to play in the presence of one of the decade’s highest paid pitchers, Mr. Zito himself. Kelley is known for his acoustic guitar tunes, hip-hop flavors, and witty lyrics—sounds like a musical feast for your ears, eh? It’s all to help raise cashflow for soldiers who were wounded at war and to help pump you up for another Spring Training season. This is a great opportunity to check out one of Nightlife and Bar Magazine’s top 100 nightlife venues in the country for some drinks, good tunes, and the opportunity to help our country’s war-wounded soldiers. Saturday, March 10th. 9 pm – 3 am. 7277 E. Camelback Rd. Ages 21+

TOP 20 SKI & SNOWBOARD SPOTS IN THE UNITED STATES There are numerous ways to rate a ski resort. The vertical drop, the snow quality, depth or frequency, if familyoriented, the skill levels attracted, the resort’s popularity and the quality of accommodations are only a few. Rarely are resorts rated equally across different ranking lists. This top United States ski resorts list centers around skill level differentiation and quality. Some may be well known, but there might be a surprise or two tucked here or there as well.

Ranking System Each entry is granted a ranking of 0 to 5 for each skill level, beginner through expert. If a resort has a reasonable amount of good slopes for each skill level, the resort would earn availability and quality points in each skill level. However, on the positive side, two bonus points are awarded if a resort has hosted a significant professional or Winter Olympic event in recent history. Up to three points can be awarded if skiers have noted favorable comments, because the skiers are the ones who ultimately count.

Point Notations The resorts are listed from highest to lowest in ranking, and each separate score is noted as B for beginner, I for intermediate, and E for expert. H is

for event host, and R is for favorable user reviews and reflects one point each for enthusiasm, amenities and activities. The aggregate total determines the placement awarded.

Some say that the expression “southpaw” for lefties may have originated with baseball because a lefthanded pitcher would end up facing south as he finished throwing the ball.

The odds of a fan being hit by a baseball are 300,000 to 1. FRANCESCA WOLFSOHN INVESTMENT ADVISOR AZ 480~822~8176 NY 516~395~3299

FINDING THE FUNNY & THE FACTS IN MONEY WHAT IS THE U.S. DOLLAR REALLY WORTH? ONE WOULD THINK THE ANSWER IS STRAIGHTFORWARD, THE RESULT OF A STANDARD CALCULATION, HOWEVER, IT IS ANYTHING BUT. Prior to 1971 the US Dollar was backed by Gold and Silver and other hard assets that provided the strength behind the currency. After 1971 the dollar was no longer backed by any hard assets and became a flat currency. As a flat currency the value of a US Dollar is therefore worth what the government decrees it is worth. It is the Legal Tender Laws that give US Currency its value otherwise it would be worth only what it actually costs to make – 6.4¢ per bill.

US Bills are actually made with a combination of linen and cotton, not paper. This is why you can wash a dollar bill and it won’t fall apart. 97% of all paper money contains traces of cocaine. As an anti-counterfeiting device a small plastic strip is inserted into all US Bills. The strip has written on it the denomination of the note and is located in different places on different bills. Also when you shine a UV light on the bill the strip will glow depending on its denomination. $5 bill glows blue * $10 bill glows orange * $20 bill glows green * $50 bill glows yellow * $100 bill glows red. In 1960, the Federal Reserve had $177.41 in cash circulating for every person living in the US. In 1990, that amount increased to $1,062.86 per capita. Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr. didn’t miss a game in 16 years. He played in 2,632 consecutive games from April 30, 1982 to Sept. 19, 1998.

The inventor of baseball is also credited with firing the first Union shot of the Civil War.

The world’s largest baseball bat (length: 120 feet long; weight: 68,000 pounds) is located in the Louisville Slugger Museum, Kentucky.

The baseball card dates all the way back to 1800 and early 1900. It wasn’t until 1968 that Topps became a popular card maker.

Baseball legend states that the silhouette on the MLB logo is Harmon Killebrew, who played for the Washington Senators, the Minnesota Twins and the Kansas City Royals. He was second to Babe Ruth in total homeruns.

Having been open for nearly 100 years, Fenway Park in Boston is the oldest baseball stadium still in use. The shortest major league player ever was Eddie Gaedel, who stood three feet, seven inches tall. His one appearance in a MLB game was solely as a publicity stunt. Hall of Famer and stolen base king Rickey Henderson often checked into hotels under the name Richard Pryor. Manager Alvin Dark of the San Francisco Giants told reporters that NASA would “put a man on the moon before Gaylord Perry hits a home run.” When Perry finally hit a home run, it was 20 minutes after Neil Armstrong landed on the moon.

In 1998, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa brought America back to baseball, battling it out for most home runs in a season with McGwire winning the close race of 69 to Sosa’s 66

Philadelphia is shown with the time set at 4:10. According to the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing, “there are no records explaining why that particular time was chosen” If you had $10 billion and spent $1 every second of every day, it would take 317 years for you to go broke. A world record of $2,255,000 was paid in December 2006 for an 1890 $1000 United States Treasury note. You’d need to fold a bill of any denomination about 8,000 times (first forward and then backwards) before it will tear. Most people save $2 bills, thinking they are rare and therefore valuable; they’re actually worth… $2. The number 13 (corresponding to the 13 colonies) figures prominently on the $1 bill. The number of letters/ digits in 1776 (4) and its Roman Numeral equivalent MDCCLXXVI (9) adds up to 13. The dollar has 13 stars above the eagle. There are 13 steps on the Pyramid. There are 13 letters in ANNUIT COEPTIS. E PLURIBUS UNUM contains 13 letters. There are 13 vertical bars on the shield. The top of the shield has 13 horizontal stripes. You can count 13 leaves on the olive branch. There are 13 berries on the olive branch. The dollar bill also features 13 arrows and 13 hats. If you could double your money every year for 20 years in a row (highly unlikely, just one dollar would turn into more than one million ($1,048,576). More realistically, if you invested your money at 8% from age 25 to age 65, just $3,900 per year would turn into more than one million ($1,010,320). That means it only takes about $325 a month to become a millionaire. It is illegal to put coins in your ears in Hawaii. If you drive 10 miles to buy a lottery ticket, you are more likely to die in a car accident than to win the lottery. If you leave an unpaid balance on a credit card charging 18% interest, the amount you owe will double in just four years and three months. Starting in 2006, it cost the United State Mint more than one cent to produce each penny and more than five cents to produce each nickel, due to rising commodity prices. (GENIUS).

The term “1-2-3 INNING” refers to an inning in which a pitcher retires three batters in consecutive order.
