‘Footnote’ A Talmud scholar (Shlomo Bar Aba) who shuns the limelight is disdainful of his son’s (Lior Ashkenazi) academic achievements and pursuit of fame. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG – 106 minutes)

‘Delicacy’ A Swedish man (François Damiens) courts a French woman (Audrey Tautou) mourning the death of her husband. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 – 108 minutes)

Stan: “Reminded of a key factor as a parent in raising our children with the mindset of nurturing their lives to succeed beyond our own, writer/ director Joseph Cedarexamines

Joseph: “With their new romantic dramedy ‘Delicacy,’ directors David Foenkinos and Stéphane Foenkinos would have you believe that love is so fragile that one must only risk one spur-of-the-moment decision in their lifetime. After all, that is exactly what happens in the new movie, which David adapted from his own novel. Once its lone moment of passion passes, the story instantly collapses into a modest and measured melodrama. Even brief reflections of magic and whimsy akin to star Audrey Tautou’s ‘Amélie’ are unable to salvage the restrained wreckage.” Grade: D

‘Murder Capital of the World’ An investigation of the economic, social and political forces behind the violence plaguing Ciudad Juarez. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (NR – 90 minutes) Joseph: “Charlie Minn’s new documentary ‘Murder Capital of the World’ suggests that the director has hit a road-block in not only the development of original ideas, but also in his ability to improve upon his filmmaking skills. Though the movie – which is nearly identical in both topic and approach to Minn’s ‘8 Murders a Day’ – is made with the best of intentions and features footage that will make your blood run cold. It lacks any organization whatsoever thereby preventing it from having any substantial impact. Moreover, the project is presented in a way that is more appropriate for a network news magazine than a feature film.” Grade: D

‘October Baby’ A beautiful and naive college freshman (Rachel Hendrix) sets out on a road trip with her misfit friends

to discover herself after she learns that her entire life is a lie. (PG-13 – 97 minutes) Stan: “Co-directors Andrew and Jon Erwin [with Jon also co-writer] avoid ‘preaching to the choir’ as they deliver a poignant story on parenting and children growing up, aptly presenting each viewpoint of parents and a teenage child with insight from both perspectives as the central characters search within themselves for reconciliation and answers while realizing that living life is the greatest challenge of humankind, and the acceptance of the path it takes us.” Grade: B Joseph: “‘October Baby’ is lifeaffirming, emotionally rich and humungously heartfelt. In fact, the new spiritual dramedy from Andrew and Jon Erwin has the potential to heal a great many people with its message, which essentially encompasses the topic of forgiveness. The best part is that the movie relays said message without resorting to the usual ‘hitting the viewer over the head’ tactics with respect to its religious themes - and instead uses the story and its characters to organically nudge them toward the intended conclusion.” Grade: B

‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’ A scientist (Ewan McGregor) and a businesswoman (Emily Blunt) fall in love while devising a way to bring sport fishing to the Middle East. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 – 111 minutes) Stan: “A pleasant surprise from director Lasse Hallström, who’s cinematic eye for capturing the essence of locations as the backdrop for his films, takes his time in presenting the political, ecological, religious, and economic elements at the core of the story while infusing throughout the film the aptly timed comedic eccentricities of each of the central characters, providing those visual breaks of landscapes, fish swimming upstream, and city-life hustle/bustle as I reflected on my own mantra of ‘Living life is trying to make one’s dreams come true.’” Grade: B Randy: “Emily Blunt is one of my favorite actresses, so ‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’ scored points before the projector even turned on. Being an objective critic, I didn’t let my feelings sway my grading. But, Blunt’s on-screen chemistry with Ewan McGregor was natural and

Joseph: “‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’ is a waste of director Lasse Hallstrom’s tremendous talent. The new romantic dramedy, which is based on Paul Torday’s novel of the same title, may look a-lure-ing thanks to the visual beauty that the ‘Chocolat’ and ‘Casanova’ helmer is capable of achieving. However, unlike those efforts, this finned flick lacks a swimming story – unless, of course, you give a carp whether or not farmed fish are inclined to swim upstream in the middle of the desert (in which case, cod help you).” Grade: D

My characters living in depression and hunting for food and trying to stay alive and trying to keep his family alive so he’s not eating a lot and I wanted to get a good sense of what hunger felt like so that was probably the biggest thing for me in terms of getting into that character’s head.

I think the difference between this and a lot of these franchises that have been before this, I think that this stretches to a much wider audience. My method, as natural and organic as it happened, was really just to imagine in this moment that this was me, my story and my situation. I think that being unprepared really helped with [this character] because that is how she is; she is unprepared for everything that happens to her.

“I cannot say a single thing that I learned about myself from ‘October Baby’ because this story is just so much bigger than me. I am just along for the journey. “It is so rare nowadays to have a movie that has a message of redemption. It is a miraculous thing to go through life and for there to be redemption on the other side. When we experience that in a film and it is believable, you carry it with you. It is like a little boost of hope. I would love to say that I could be in movies like this for the rest of my career, but they are not very common. Families are desperate for these films that tell true stories but do not have content that they have to shield their children’s eyes from.

Hello Again Craft Beer Lovers. Today let’s get wild and chat about Saboteur from Odell Brewing in Fort Collins, Colorado. Opening in 1989 with beers such as Easy Street Wheat and 90 Schilling Scottish style ale, the second oldest Micro Brewery in Colorado now employs over 60 people and brews 45,000 barrels of beer each year!

BEER! SECTION

SABOTEUR, the Wild One!

OK, let’s get to the brew. Saboteur is a strong, barrel aged brown ale dosed with a shot of Brettanomyces. What is Brett you ask? Essentially, Brett is a strain of Wild Yeast (bacteria) originally found centuries ago testing the patience of wine makers all over Europe. At low levels in red wine it can add to complexity and character, but being a wild strain of yeast, it’s very difficult to control. Odell took Brett and looked upon it as the “odd uncle” you can’t really grasp until after a few pints. Working carefully with their barrel aging program, they have cultivated just the right amount to add complexity and mouth feel to this brew as wine makers have done for centuries. The beer pours a hazy brown colour with a thin, off-white head that recedes quite quickly. On the nose as on the palate, you smell and taste the effect Brett has had on the beer. I can only describe it as FUNK. Delicate off flavours usually not associated with beer at any level are present and truly add complexity and a tangy farm house essence. It’s a very unique experience and one you simply MUST TRY!

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Great Food pairings here are all over the board. Strong cheeses, medium rare peppercorn, crusted fillet mignon, sweet and sour pork. I could go on forever. The odd sensations in this brew will add zing to just about any dish with a lot of verve. As always, keep sending your comments and questions to kingjameswann@gmail. com and don’t forget life is quite dull without a bit of WILD! March 22nd, 2012 - March 28th, 2012

Winner of a silver medal at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival competition, SanTan Brewing Company’s Mr. Pineapple is making his way back to Arizona just in time for spring. This refreshing fruity brew is hand crafted to brewmaster, Anthony Canecchia’s strict standards, which impressed GABF judges last year. Taking home the silver medal was a huge honor for SanTan Brewing Company and has helped to attract national recognition for their increasingly popular craft beer.

summer months in Arizona. Fresh pineapple is added during the primary fermentation then crushed and cooled to allow the natural flavors to infuse the traditional wheat beer for a refreshing twist. Mr. Pineapple will make his 2012 return at the Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival on Saturday, March 24, in Chandler, Arizona. Then, this seasonal brew will be available April through September to the general public both at SanTan Brewing Company as well as hundreds of restaurants and pubs throughout Arizona. Did you know if you get a DUI you will have to carry an SR22 policy on your insurance for 3 consecutive years? If your insurance lapses at any time during that period, you will have to start your 3 years over. This not only raises your insurance rates, but also makes it harder to find insurance companies that will accept you.

I found a small cafe that makes me feel like I stepped into a time machine; I felt like I needed to order a sundae! Temptations Cafe is only open for breakfast and lunch and is all about Chicago. This husband and wife duo is awesome and they know everyone that walks through the door. Best French toast I’ve ever had, hands down. They have specials every day but you never really know what it’s going to be, which I find exciting. I love a good cup of coffee, and their Colombian coffee keeps people coming for more. This is a tasty little treat that I suggest you don’t pass up. 8322 E. McDowell Rd. Scottsdale, AZ 85257

This place constantly keeps changing and I love going there. Burgers and Bottles opened in August and they are really trying to make it work. Gourmet burgers and craft beers are never a bad combination. The place is not exactly visually pleasing but the staff is awesome and accommodating. Happy hour is daily with a burger and a beer for $10! I suggest getting Mamas Little Yella Pills from Oskar Blues Brewery along with the N’awlins burger. It has grilled jalapenos with swiss cheese and their homemade signature sauce that you will fall in love with. The daily specials are a deal; .99 cent sliders that have caramelized onions, American cheese, ketchup, and mustard are offered ALL the time, so come and get it! 1641 N. Hayden Rd. Mouth-Watering Memphis, Kansas City, Texas and Santa Maria Style BBQ Will Tantalize Patrons at the Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival Saturday, March 24th in Downtown Chandler

On Saturday, March 24, downtown Chandler is the place to be for finger licking good BBQ, craft beer and performances from headliners Face to Face and Goldfinger. Professionally produced by HDE Agency, the Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival kicks off at noon, boasting more than 50 food vendors serving up unique creations and representing their regional flavors and family roots. Here’s a sneak peak of some of the lip-smacking delights they’ll dish out. The crew at Montana Q is smoking their no. 1 ranked beef brisket infused with Southern Comfort and bacon smothered in their signature BBQ sauce—sweet and spicy with hints of Montana chokecherry syrup and chipotle peppers. Inspired by Texas and Memphis style, Q Up! BBQ is dishing up mesquite-smoked pulled pork sandwiches topped with a spicy tequila BBQ sauce. BBQ Island will serve a Kansas City style pulled pork sandwich that packs some heat. The pork shoulder is rubbed and injected with chili pepper, paprika, garlic, onion and mustard and topped with BBQ sauce. For the truly indulgent, Montana Bar-B-Q is cooking up a bratwurst topped with Kansas City style pulled pork. This “homage to hog” is topped with a sweet tangy BBQ sauce featuring more than 20 different

March 22nd, 2012 - March 28th, 2012

herbs and spices. The Arizona BBQ Company will introduce fans to Santa Maria Style BBQ tri-tip sandwiches that have been smoked with red oak from the central coast of California. Finally, save room for the JED’Z BBQ’s own Hog Trough—a loaded potato salad topped with pulled pork, mom’s creamy coleslaw and a drizzle of JED’Z homemade BBQ sauce. For the adventurous, try JED’Z Bi@#h Slap Sauce for a little heat. To wash it all down, more than 200 kegs of ice cold craft beer will be tapped throughout the event. SanTan Brewing Company is set to feature their four core brands, which pair well with the sweet and savory flavors of BBQ fixings. Also,

craft beers from Sonoran Brewing, Grand Canyon Brewing, Papago Brewing and Thunder Canyon Brewing will be flowing throughout the afternoon. The 2012 Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival will span the entire AJ Chandler Park East and West as well as connecting Arizona Ave., which will be closed from Buffalo St. to Boston St. for the festivities. The address is 5 S. Arizona Ave., Chandler, AZ., 85225. Admission is only $10 per person and children 12 and under are free. Event partner Bashas’ will offer $8 general admission tickets at all Bashas’ grocery stores throughout the Valley through March 23, while supplies last.

AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

Food, beverages and vendor items will be sold separately by vendors on a cash basis. For more event information and to purchase tickets, visit www.chandlerbbq. com. The Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival has received designation as an official Chandler Centennial event. A portion of the proceeds from the Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival will benefit the Downtown Chandler Community Foundation (DCCF), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable foundation. The DCCF is responsible for the fundraising activities of the Downtown Chandler Community Partnership (DCCP). They provide a conduit for grants and sponsorships from public agencies, corporations, foundations and other sources for dissemination to the District and community organizations. For more information about the DCCF visit http://www. downtownchandler.org/ downtown-chandler-communityfoundation. The Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival’s official partners include Bashas’, Verizon Wireless, BBQ Island, Bulleit Bourbon, Crowne Plaza, Discount Cab, Downtown Chandler Community Partnership, Foodies Like Us, Local First AZ, Phoenix New Times, Popchips, Red Bull, RideNow, SanTan Brewing, Von Hanson’s Meats & Spirits, World Class Beverages, Yelp, Food & Flourish and AZ BBQ Club.

Eat, Drink and Bar Healthy. The weather is just plain perfect this time of year. Whether you are out to a ball game or taking in one of the many festivals and farmers markets, days like these are made for patios. And what’s a patio without good food and a cocktail? That being said, bathing suit season is just around the corner. We can no longer hide our pale, out-of-shape selves under long sleeves and blue jeans. The LocalLily.com Go To Guide {Spring 2012} is chock full of places with great patios, healthy eats and skinny drinks.

The Salty Senorita is a seasonal favorite with locations near stadiums in both Peoria and Old Town Scottsdale. Big patios offer plenty of seats in sun and shade. Skip the fried Fundido and opt instead for the Blackend Fish Tacos ($3.99) or Carne Asada Tacos ($2.99), skip the crèma. The Senorita Chop Salad ($7.99) will fill you up without filling you out as will the Avocado Steak Salad ($9.99). www. saltysenorita.com When it comes to cocktails, Local Lily prefers a skinny margarita made with lime and nectar instead of the usual sugary mix. Of course you can’t go wrong with Lily’s twist on the traditional Salty Dog, and order vodka with grapefruit, and a splash of soda, skip the salt. Did you know that twenty states require visiting athletes to pay state income tax for games played within the state? Reported in the L.A. Times, NFL players typically file in 10 to 12 jurisdictions. NBA is somewhere between 16 and 20. MLB is somewhere between 20 and 26, and the NHL is between 14 and 16, “The lion’s share of most players’ income, their salary, is taxed in the city and state where the team is based. “swag” they receive at awards ceremonies and celebrity events as income. As dazzling as sports players’ salaries are, the pros play offense and defense to preserve theirs. Behind every sports star, one can only recommend their needs to be an astute certified public accountant quick-stepping through a maze of state and local income taxes known as the “jock tax.” Most states use the “duty days” method, dividing the player’s number of work days by the number of days spent playing in the state. A few use the “games played” method, dividing the number of games in the season by the number played in the state. Today there’s E-FILE, but in the old days, for example, a player who lived in California not only had to file in all of those different states, but was required to provide a copy of each state return with his/her federal return. The average NBA player could pay tax in 20 states. And just to give accountants more gray hairs, no two states do it exactly alike. All those state filings can make for one doorstop of a tax return.

Daddy Real Entertainment is proud to present multiple Grammy-winner Johnny Rivers with special guest Gene Deer at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 13th at the intimate Celebrity Theatre. From his first hit, the rocking “Memphis” in 1964, to his biggest ballad “Poor Side of Town,” to the legendary “Secret Agent Man” and other chart topping hits, Johnny Rivers’ songs remain timeless. Born Henry Ramistella on November 7, 1942 in New York City and raised in Baton Rouge, LA, Rivers first emerged in the mid-sixties at the popular Whiskey A-Go-Go club in L.A. It was there that he created a tour de force that helped break down the wall between pop and folk music. With recordings like “Where Have All The Flowers Gone,” “Midnight Special,” and “Summer Rain,” he did what it took The Byrds five people to do; bring folk-rock to the musical stages of L.A. during the social phenomenon known as the summer of love. Since then the “Secret Agent Man”

has racked up 17 gold records, 29 chart hits, two Grammy awards, and sold more than 30 million records. Secret Agent Man: The Ultimate Johnny Rivers Anthology: 1964-2006 (2-CDs) entered the Collector’s Choice Music chart at #1 two months prior to the national distribution release date in 2006. In 2009, Rivers released Shadows on the Moon, a critically acclaimed album of new horizons, offering a blend of R&B and jazz, with help from old friends Jimmy Webb and Michael Georgiades. Special guest blues artist Gene Deer has recorded two CDs on the Slippery Noodle Sound label: Soul Tender and Livin’ with the Blues. For nine consecutive years, Deer was voted the “Best Local Blues Band (1995-2003)” by readers of Indianapolis’ popular Nuvo Newspaper. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets ($35 and $50) are on sale now at Celebrity Theatre or online at www. CelebrityTheatre.com. To charge by phone call 602-267-1600 ext. 1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is conveniently located at 440 N. 32nd St., just 4 blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, in Phoenix.

The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS

Live Music at Devil’s Advocate Bar & Grill

Drinking and driving is 100% preventable.

www.smartridedd.com • (623) 328-9206 We are available 24/7 365 days a year.

Maloney’s would have been a good bar to celebrate good ‘ol St. Patty last weekend if it were still alive. But it isn’t. The Maloney’s days are long gone and now we get something slightly classier, slightly more fratastic, and in my opinion, way more fun. Oh, so you’ve heard of Devil’s, eh? Of course you have because it’s a blasty blast when you’re with one to twenty of your closest buddies. Thursdays are good with their 2 for 1 drink specials but Fridays get down with the live band music that no one really listens to, but needs as a cover-up soundtrack to the raucous that begins when people start to get crazy with the shuffleboard. And it’s not hard to observe the increase in rowdy behavior with the $4 domestic liters and long islands the bartenders work so hard at refilling. Beer and the value-drink-that-gets-you-smashed don’t sit well in your tummy? Try one of the other drinks on special. Perhaps a $3 Three Olives Vodka, $4 Crown, or $6 premium liter will do (yeah, I know that’s also beer but sometimes being fancy with primo beer creates a better experience). Whether you go to Devil’s and stay there all night, or you make it your pre-drinking destination before Mill, you’re bound to have an amusing time people watching and being surrounded by your fellow devils, alumni, and wannabes. Fridays. 955 E. University Drive. Band plays at 9. Free. Ages 21+

DJ Victor Dinaire at Sound Kitchen’s Missing Miami Party Ohhh, Scottsdale, a lot of people love to hate you. Perhaps it’s because your bars and clubs are filled with vain, beautiful, and sometimes deceivingly rich patrons who, with bombastic attitudes, make those who aren’t as beautiful, rich, or thin feel inferior. Drinks aren’t priced

like the bars found in Mother Phoenix, or Little Brother Tempe—oh no, Sister Scottsdale makes her money off the people who like to spend their cashflow on nighttime entertainment. And I say, hey, sometimes it’s fun to act like a baller as long as your bills are paid. If they are, check out one of Scottsdale’s newest night clubs, Wild Knight, located in Old Town where the crowd is sexy and the DJs are legit—too legit to quit, in fact. DJ Victor cannot cease creating mixes that are broadcasted nationwide on his radio show, Lost Episode, making him the country’s most listened to trance disc jockey. This Friday he’s having an affair with Sister Scottsdale for Wild Knight’s Missing Miami Party where he’ll turn the intimate dance floor into one you’d find in America’s electronic music capital, South Beach. I suppose you may be able to argue against that last statement, however, there’s no doubt the place is going to be bonkers with the beats rolling off the ladies’ short dresses and guys’ button down shirts. There’s a new rhythm in Scottsdale and it’s pulsing through the masses with the name, Electronica, and I like it. Friday, March 23rd. 9 pm – 12 am. $10 at www. relentlessbeats.com. Ages 21+

TIE THE KNOT AND GET TO CLIMBING!!

Rock Climbing 101: How to Tie a Proper Knot There are few things more important in the world of rock climbing than knowing how to tie a proper knot. Of course you will want good shoes, sturdy rope, a comfortable harness, heavy-duty carabiners, and a reliable (and large) belayer. But all of these things are useless if the knot that holds them together is sloppy, loose, or simply tied incorrectly. The wrong knot could spell disaster for the unlucky climber who tied it (or worse, let someone else tie it for them). Although there are multiple types of knots you will need to learn in order to become a master of rock climbing (from those that stop to those that slide), there are a few basic knots that everyone should know from the get-go.

remember. Start by folding the rope to create a loop. Grab the end of the loop and circle it around, crossing the end over the length of rope to form a circle. Then fold the loop under (leaving the circle), bring the loop over the top and pass it through the circle, pulling tight. This should create a knot that looks like a figure eight.

3. Prusik. When hauling the load or ascending an already placed rope, this is a good knot to use (since it is meant to be tied around another object such as a bar, handle, post, etc.). Start with a

2. Alpine Butterfly. This is one of the most versatile and secure knots in climbing. To begin, circle the rope into a single loop-de-loop (like a roller coaster). Twist the loop in the center so that it looks like an eight (make sure both twists are facing the same direction). Fold the top loop under so that it aligns with the bottom loop, then give it some extra slack to extend it beyond the line of the rope. length of rope that is tied together on the ends to form a large circle. Place this circle under the bar it is going to be tied to. Pull the right end of the rope over the bar, pass it through the left side of the rope, and then under the bar, so it is back on the right side (leaving space in the middle of the bar). Repeat this, running the rope closer to the middle of the bar on the second pass. Then pull the right side of the rope over the bar a third time, but instead of going under, pass the rope through the left-hand loop and pull it tight on the left side. 4. Clove Hitch. One of the easiest knots to tie, it is most often used as an anchor

the line to create a loop. Pass the end under the line and up through the loop, then pull to cinch. To double this knot, simply pass the end of the line under and up through the loop a second time before tightening.

5. Overhand. The most basic of knots, you have no doubt tied one or two of these in your day. This knot goes at the end of the line and it functions as a stopper. Begin by folding the end of the rope over Photo courtesy of

knot on the belay. Start by creating two loop-de-loops in the line (like a two loop roller coaster). Pull the tops of the loops together, placing one atop the other (so it looks like a pretzel). Open a carabiner and slide it through the upper central circle created by the overlapping loops. Secure the carabiner and pull the ends of the line to tighten the knot.
