Working on film and media projects for more than 25 years before retiring in 2008, there’s the key moment when that project is born and takes on a life of its own as it nurtures, grows, and comes to fruition. The Arizona Theatre Company’s presentation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby’, a play currently at the Herberger Theater Center through April 8, 2012 and based on the 1925 book by F. Scott Fitzgerald, truly has a life of its own. With the 1974 film starring Robert Redford in the title role a distant memory, and curious expectations for the 2012 release of a new

Scott Fitzgerald’s story of Nick Carraway (Zachary Ford), a Midwesterner now living on Long Island, NY who finds himself fascinated by the mysterious past and lavish lifestyle of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby (David Andrew Macdonald) is drawn into Gatsby’s orbit while becoming a witness to obsession and tragedy. This gives the viewer a feeling of personification of the lifestyle of the ‘roaring 20’s’ with captivating visuals, lively musical accompaniment, and the casts’ firm hold of their characters which more than aptly conveyed the caddish womanizing nature of Jay Gatsby. The character that captured my heart is that of Jordan Baker, presented by a marvelous performance portraying the finer nuances of humor, compassion and friendship that actress Sofia Jean Gomez brought to the role!

‘Detachment’ A substitute teacher (Adrien Brody) who drifts from classroom to classroom finds a connection to the students and teachers during his latest assignment. (NR – 97 minutes) Joseph: “Though its self-seriousness and artistic style are occasionally off-putting, Tony Kaye’s new drama ‘Detachment’ remains a quietly compelling character study. The director uses a cheerless temperament to say something significant about the failures of both public education and human behavior. Anchored by an excellent performance from star Adrian Brody, it is an extraordinarily honest motion picture that will encourage you to examine your own emotional hang-ups.” Grade: C
Joseph: “Zhang Yimou’s latest cinematic effort ‘The Flowers of War’ may move along a bit too slowly and therefore be about a half an hour too long but it is visually stunning and deeply moving nonetheless. In the hands of a less talented director, the new historical drama about the Nanjing massacre would likely have faltered, as finding meaning in war is never an easy task. However, Yimou produces poignant poetry with the juxtaposition of beauty and brutality and uses it to affect the audience in a very authentic way.” Grade: B

Joseph: “Though it still falls far short of the epic expectations that accompany its franchise’s brand, so to speak, ‘Wrath of the Titans’ is leaps and bounds better than its immediate predecessor. Granted, even if the tinfoil costumes worn by the gods in 2010’s ‘Clash of the Titans’ were the only things that were changed, director Jonathan Liebesman’s sequel would have been a vast improvement. However, its pacing, relatability and tone have all also been upgraded, making for an exciting special effects extravaganza.” Grade: C

And I understand why they didn’t tell me because maybe it was so brutal and so cruel. The biggest challenge for the movie for the production side is that in terms of the action and dealing with two countries, two stories, its quite easy to loose oneself including the movie goer with this kind of movie because you’re jumping from one language to another and challenging the audience which I felt was important to do it this way because fear is a universal theme and if one wants to go deep into the theme, it’s the only way to present it universally. That’s why I did the film in this way, I felt that it was crucial to present what’s going in different places and different families with similar danger attacking their lives and my idea of no matter how far you travel, no matter how far you run away from your problems, no matter how much you change in your life, the language, always your nightmares and your ghosts are traveling with you.” – Juan Carlos Fresnadillo

types of movies that I have always loved so it was a massive opportunity for me to get to direct ‘Wrath of the Titans.’ You watch whatever inspires you and, for me, that is all Hollywood kind of filmmaking. “I saw [2010’s ‘Clash of the Titans’] on opening night. It was the type of movie that I went to see on opening night. So, I remembered it well and definitely referenced it for ‘Wrath of the Titans.’ I did not watch it too much, though, because I wanted to make sure that I was not being beholden to stuff that I do not need to be. “The first movie felt a little too fantastical for my taste. When I go to see a movie about Greek mythology, I expect it to have a realism and a gritty groundedness to it. Fortunately, ‘Wrath of the Titans’ takes place a little later than ‘Clash of the Titans.’ It is almost like the gods are decaying, so I got to change how they looked and we had a little freedom there. “I got to create a lot of things in postproduction. I love that because it is almost like shooting the movie again except you are not with the crew and you do not have all of that pressure. There is just something I love about creating a world that does not exist. I love trying to push my imagination. I was also drawn to those kinds of movies when I was young.” – Jonathan Liebesman

Travel Update – Florida
As we look around the country at how the craft beer movement has exploded, there are a handful of places that seem to get very little respect. For the longest time, Phoenix was one of these cities. It was assumed that we were a town full of light beer drinkers who had no appreciation for good beer. Brewers were warned away from distribution in Arizona because we supposedly didn’t like hoppy or big beers. Well we have proved them wrong. Another state that is proving folks wrong shares some commonality with us. Florida, like us, is a mostly hot weather state, has a large snowbird and tourist influx and a reputation for being a beer wasteland. Well, much like Arizona, Florida has changed. A lot of this change is focused on the Tampa area with upcoming national powerhouse, Cigar City Brewery, as the focal point. But by no means is this the
only brewery making great beer in Florida. We’ll talk about Cigar City more in just a little bit, but let’s also look at some other exciting new breweries and their beers. Orlando has turned into more than just a tourist trap with great beer and beer bars. Even Disney has added a brew pub to their Boardwalk area. bars. Even Disney has added a brew pub to their Boardwalk area. So we will put our focus there. Let’s start with the Shipyard Emporium in Winter Park. Before you ask if this is just a knock off from Shipyard Brewing in Maine, it is. However, it is not the standard beer lineup that excites here, but the stuff they do locally. The most noted is the Palm Ride Barrel Aged Wee Heavy that one the Best Florida Beer Championship for 2012. This ain’t some fruit beer, but a flavorful Scotch Ale that let’s just enough of the oak barrel flavor come through the smokiness of the Wee Heavy. Stay with the small batches that are made onsite and you can’t go wrong. The pub features some other great locally produced beers as well as a nice rotating selection of guest beers. Swamp Head Brewery may be located in Gainesville but it has quite the following in Orlando and is available in most beercentric bars and restaurants. Try their Stump Knocker Pale Ale or Midnight Oil Oatmeal Coffee Stout for a real treat.

Orlando Brewing makes organic beers, and makes them pretty darn well. They adhere to the German Beer Purity Law and use only four ingredients to make their beers. They have a large variety of beer they make but check out the Miami Weiss or European Pilz if you like. They also sell quite a bit of their Olde Pelican Ale, which, despite the name, is not a Barley Wine, but an English Pale Ale. They can be found all over Orlando and are a nice treat for the organic conscious consumer. America’s oldest brewery, Yuengling also has a presence in Florida and has a popularity there that rivals the big three. There aren’t too many places in Orlando where you can’t find a lager on tap. While it may not be the best beer made, it has a unique charm and appeal that makes people try it, and it is a great go to beer when nothing else is working for you. Now, let’s talk about Cigar City. Blending Beers, the DOGFISH Way!
Hello again craft beer lovers, today let’s chat about a new brew on the scene here in Arizona from Dogfish Head Brewing. The now highly sought after 75Min. IPA. Go Figure, it’s a Blend! A mix of their 60Min. and 90Min. IPAs. Funny this beer should arrive here when it has, as I was in a rather heated discussion only two weeks ago with a local Tempe brew master over the legitimacies of blending beers. His argument? Every beer regardless of style is brewed to stand on its own without tampering. My argument, beer blending has been a constant in the brewing world for three or more centuries and fuels creativity. Apparently bartenders at the Rehoboth Dogfish Tap Room have been blending and serving 75Min. for quite some time. While I’m at it SanTan Brewing’s Devils Ale began life as a blend as well. SCORE ONE FOR ME.Thanks Dogfish& SanTan! Ok, now that I’ve gloated a bit let’s get to the brew. As you might imagine, 75Min. does indeed cut its two siblings flavours profiles right down the middle. Those who feel as though 90Min. is too sweet will be pleasantly surprised what happens when it’s cut with a scoach of 60Min. In bottle form, Dogfish has upped the ante with bottle conditioning, a touch of maple syrup and whole leaf Cascade dry hopping. The bottle conditioning lends a soft, velvety mouth feel and the syrup together with the extra hop infusion ads just a touch of aroma and zest. Truly creative and very special, this is why pairing food and beer has become chic. This is why craft beer is so quickly climbing the ladder of social acceptance.

off, I don’t know anything about Tampa suburb Ybor City (other than the fact that there once was an Ybor City Brewing Company which did not have enjoyable beer), but the folks at Cigar City want you to know that they haven’t been located there since 2009. They are currently located on Spruce Street in Tampa, but they belong to the state. If you were to ask just about any craft savvy Floridian what the best beer in the state was, you would almost always be told Cigar City. They make amazing regular beers, leading off with Jai Alai IPA, Maduro Brown and Tocobaga Red Ale in 12 oz bottles (soon to be in cans as well), and Guava Grove Farmhouse Ale and Improv Oatmeal Rye India-Style Brown Ale in 750 ML bottles. As if that wasn’t enough, and with most of their beers pulling in the 90s at www.ratebeer.com, it should be, they have an incredible selection of specialty products. Leading off with Hunahpu’s, a limited release Imperial Stout with a following so big that it now has its own party on release day, and followed up by the 110K+OT Series, a series of beers for the “working man who has arrived”… Cigar City is known for their specialty and seasonal releases. We could do a whole article on this fine brewery, and when they finally start selling in Arizona, perhaps we will. But for now, just know that if you ever have an opportunity to try this beer, go for it. Beer bars come in several styles and Orlando has good versions of each. For the person who likes the comfort of a familiar chain, World of Beer is a great place to hit up. With 50 taps and 500 bottled beers available, this is a nice place to settle in for an afternoon of watching basketball or football or whatever is on the screen. They don’t serve food, but keep a book of menus from local places that will deliver. Look for our very own World of Beer to open up sometime in June on Mill Avenue. For those of you
who prefer the independent places, go in search of RedlightRedlight Beer Parlour about 30 minutes from the tourist area. It is a little difficult to find, but well worth the effort. They open at 5:00 PM every day (2:00 on Sundays) and have a knowledgeable staff and regular clientele that remind you of some of our Arizona

If you like places that serve food with the beer, check out The Ravenous Pig. Billed as an American Gastropub, it certainly hits the mark. A true gastropub serves high end food and beer without pretension according to the Washington Post. Ravenous Pig hits the mark. With a dining room that is always packed (make your reservations at least several days in advance) and a pub area that rotates pretty quickly, this place is popular.
Their current tap list includes Brooklyn Brewery Lager, Cigar City Minaret ESB, Great Divide Espresso Oak Aged Yeti (as one of a handful of Yeti bars in the country) and North Coast Old Rasputin. Bottles include the Cigar City/ The Bruery collaboration, Dos Costas Oeste along with Crispin Original Cider. Food is amazing with great pub fare (try the shrimp and grits or the gruyere biscuits as a snack), wonderful salads and entrees that include Grilled Local Cobia, a fish with mild flavor but rich in texture. You can also try the Cocoa Nib Crusted Venison, the Pork Porterhouse or any of the other wonderful items on the menu.

ootball is not in season, in fact; they have several more months before it is even preseason, and it is more exciting than ever. With my second favorite sport being a bust at the moment, I have little else to watch. Supercross might as well hand over the championship to Ryan Villopoto because all the competitors are injured. I think NFL should be a reality show right now; it is incredibly exciting! I feel like the Giant’s team that I once loved is non-existent, as Mario Manningham is now a 49er. Brandon Jacobs has left the Giants, but may have no other choice but to return. Peyton Manning is a Bronco. Tim Tebow is Sanchez’s backup on the Jets. Hines Ward was dropped from the Steelers and then retired. I was shocked to see the Steelers drop such a good player, and even more shocked to see him retire when I know
he has a lot of football left in him. That is unless he wants to go be a professional dancer? I could not be more excited for the season to start; it is going to be CRAZY! The biggest news of all and the greatest shocker to me is of course the Saints bounty scandal. The coaches had a bounty program that targeted other players. I am disgusted that in a sport who penalizes for unnecessary roughness for good reasons, coaches would be paying players to hurt one another. In the real world, there is a name for that, aggravated assault, even attempted murder. Why would a coach want to see any player injured? Does he understand the risks of hard hits? Some say Payton’s suspension for the year is too harsh, I say it is not harsh enough. I think he should lose his job entirely. I am not at all worried how the Saints will do this year, and I am guessing they will do poorly. It serves them right. Wow, and we haven’t even begun yet!

Arizona Center’s Brick Pizzeria in downtown Phoenix is THE spot once a month when they bring in some of the best DJs known in the electro world for their Glamorama nights. Last month at their Wig Party, they graced us with Treasure Fingers and the crowd went wild with afros and neon hair bobbing about the dance floor. This month, there will be a zoo of people dressed as party animals complete with tiger heads and those creepy pig snouts no one really dares to wear on Halloween, but I’m mentioning it now because I openly hope to see someone who actually has the balls to rock it ‘pon the dancefloor. Dooo ittt. Major Lazer is made up of DJs, Diplo and Switch, who met after working with M.I.A. about four or so years ago. They love each other so much that they produced an album together titled, Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do. What an absolutely ridiculous name, right? Of course guns kill people but we won’t discuss that here because it’s the nightlife section and all. Hues of neon lights beaming across the dance floor, piercing a young, drunken lady’s blood-shot eyes are also killer. Daytime stresses and rent payments die when the laser beams are ejected from the speakers (yes, rays of light erupting from speakers) and Switch spins the magic. Sounds pretty killer, tight, sick, off the shizzy indeedy. Who comes up with such random, costume party glamorama? Under the Stars, Under the Table: An Evening in Adult Education at Fort McDowell Casino The buffet at Fort McDowell sure is delicious but there are other valid reasons to make the drive to this way-out-in-thedesert location. Do it for the drunken adventure sure to be had if you attend one of their new Adult Education nights when the tequila shots never stop and
you can earn yourself a bad education degree. Yee-haw!? Getting rowdy drunk seems to be what the cowboys do when they’re too far from the regular saloons of Scottsdale, so when in the deep desert, do as they do. Completion of one of their three lessons gets you a certificate and before you know it, you’ll have completed all three lessons to receive a well-deserved degree in drinking. You can purchase your certificates for a price that includes entertainment, drinks, and random fun that’s different from what you’d get in town. The first bad degree lesson involves bar hopping at 5 drinking locations at the fort for $20, which also covers you for 5 drinks. Lesson number two is tequila tasting on the tequila bus while listening to music by someone named Carlos, all for 10 buckaroos. The third lesson is titled, “Life’s a Beach,” where you must drink Pina Coladas and 151 rum punch on the rum bus, play bucket drums for 60 seconds, and then clear a limbo pole—cost: $10. Getting all three certifications entitles you to a degree and the opportunity to be honored at the diploma ceremony at 11:30 pm. Sounds like a full and collegeesque kind of night, eh? If you’re not down with the lessons, you can at least partake in the food (brats and s’mores) and drink (beer and cocktail) specials while watching the brave collect their pieces of paper. Powerbocking is a sport that has been around for a lot longer than most people realize. The devises needed to perform this sport have been on sale in the UK close to 5 years now, but it has only really begun to enter the limelight recently - and is now beginning to get the massive attention it deserves. Powerbocking is of course a bit of a crazy sport, but then again haven’t all extreme sports been referred to as crazy at some point? It basically involves strapping two huge spring-loaded stilts to your feet using bindings similar to those you might find on snowboards, and then letting yourself loose on all sorts of different terrain. They are mainly used in urban areas where the hard surfaces and varying angles make for the ideal place to

pull somersaults and wall-plants, but have been known to be widely used in woodland environments as well. They are named after Alexander Boeck, the person who invented the stilts in Germany, however they have also become commonly known as “powerisers” or “projumps.” Whatever the name, they are brilliant fun and one heck of a cool invention! Nowadays, you can pick up a pair up for around $150, but it’s recommended that you invest in some good protective gear as well. These babies can launch you as high as 3-4 feet in the air – with no promise of a perfect landing when you come back down. Nevertheless, this sport gives new meaning to the term ‘extreme fun’ and the valley of the sun has more than enough terrain for all-out insane powerbocking adventure!
