He books oneway fares to Barcelona and tells his confused wife to leave everything behind. Ross’s blistering performances at celebrity roasts honoring mega stars like Joan Rivers, Hugh Hefner, Pamela Anderson, Donald Trump, Jerry Stiller, Drew Carey, Shaquille O’Neal, and most recently David Hasselhoff inspired New York Magazine to crown him “The Meanest Man in Comedy” - and MTV to introduce him as...”A One-Man Verbal Assault Unit”. Adding laughter to insult, Jeff will be taping yet another roast in March 2011, putting Donald Trump in the hot seat. As a stand-up comic, Jeff has appeared on dozens of TV shows including David Letterman, Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O’Brien, Carson Daly, ABC’s “The View” and HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher”. Jeff also continues to perform regularly for American men and women in uniform stationed all over the world. As a filmmaker, Jeff’s directorial debut, “Patriot Act: A Jeffrey Ross Home Movie” nabbed the best feature film award at the Montreal Comedy Festival. The film is a funny and poignant documentary that captures Jeff’s life changing experience entertaining U.S. troops stationed around Iraq. In addition to Jeff’s recent dramatic turn on the hit CBS show, “C.S.I.”, he has appeared on HBO’s “Six Feet Under” and Showtime’s “Weeds”. In film, he has appeared in the Farrelly Brothers’ “Stuck on You”, Paul Weitz’s “American Dreamz” and critically acclaimed comedy, “The Aristocrats”. Jeff has also written and produced celebrity roasts for Comedy Central
and executive-produced and hosted his own highly rated re- imagination of the roasts, “MTV’s Bash of Carson Daly”, which featured Madonna, Eminem, Fifty Cent, Britney Spears, P. Diddy, Justin Timberlake, Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, Jon Stewart, Kid Rock, and Nelly all “bashing” the guest of honor for charity. Jeff has also written for some cool shows including the MTV Video Music Awards for hosts Jamie Foxx and Chris Rock and the 2000 Academy Awards for host Billy Crystal. He’s also helped write the first season of “The Man Show” on Comedy Central and consulted on “Who’s Line is it Anyway” for ABC. Occasionally Jeff even punches up movies for big shots like The Farrelly Brothers and Dreamworks Animation. Check out his CD/DVD ’NO OFFENSE: LIVE FROM NEW JERSEY’ now available at amazon.com. of a story in ‘Boy’ to constitute a movie, but it excels on charm alone. The new dramedy from New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi is quite quirky, but never in a way that feels forced or feigned. Instead, it consistently comes across as authentic and heartfelt, which encourages the viewer to be somewhat forgiving of its tendency to both meander without much purpose and rely on pop culture references that are neither here nor there.” Grade: C
‘Reuniting the Rubins’
*Screened after deadline.
Randy: “It is hard to give this film a poor grade, as it tries to remind us about the importance of family and how to respect one another. There were several moments that are truly funny and you cannot fault the actors for the otherwise clichéd caricatures they are forced to portray. We have seen the story before told in different ways, with different cultural backgrounds and while we are treading familiar territory, one cannot help but like the ‘Rubins.’” Grade: C Joseph: “In the beginning of ‘Reuniting the Rubins,’ Timothy Spall’s character is about to step foot on a cruise ship when something happens that encourages him to stay on the shore. The viewer easily empathizes with him because had he been just a few seconds earlier, this entire mess of a movie could have been avoided altogether. Writer/director Yoav Factor’s film is flimsier than a bad television sitcom as its tone fluctuates from lighthearted comedy to heartwarming drama to dark comedy and eventually even darker drama.” Grade: F

not even begin to describe ‘Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie.’ Suffice it to say that the budget of the new comedy (if you can call it that) based on the characters from Adult Swim’s ‘Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!’ did not come anywhere near a billion dollars. However, even whatever spare change you happen to have in your pocket at this very moment would have been too steep of an investment into this excruciating nightmare.” Grade: F
A guy in his mid-thirties (Michael C. Hall) watches as his life comically unravels after he enters into a relationship with the daughter (Brie Larson) of a former high school classmate (Brad William Henke). Chris Messina, Lucy Liu and Peter Fonda also star. (PG-13 – 97 minutes) Stan: “With the pacing of the up and downs as the various persons in the main character’s orbit come in and out of his life at various ill-timed moments, director Michael Knowles sometimes painful slowness as he forces us to observe at his pace, reminds us of the ‘all too real’ cycle of living our own lives, which all too often is out of our own control.” Grade: C+ Joseph: “‘The Trouble with Bliss’ may move along at a leisurely pace and fizzle out during its finale but it is entertaining nonetheless. The reason for this is the same thing that motivates the protagonist in Michael Knowles’ new dramedy to remain in his cycle of motionlessness. Slowly but surely, said protagonist accrues enough conflicts in his life to essentially be categorized as a walking train-wreck. He is amused, as are we. However, his fortune is our misfortune as it all ends with more of a clink than a bang.” Grade: C

I had six auditions over the period of 3 months before I finally got the part. “It was a really big talent search. They auditioned people in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. The only thing I could list on my resume was a dinner theater production of ‘Hello Dolly’ so the studio did not want me to play Flounder. They wanted somebody who had a name. ‘The Muppets’ By Joseph J. Airdo In “The Muppets,”Miss Piggy is reunited with Kermit and the other Muppets who then join forces with their fans (Jason Segel and Amy Adams) to raise $10 million to save Muppet Studios from a greedy Texan (Chris Cooper) who wants to raze the building and drill for oil. “The role had Moi’s name written all over it. Seriously, I opened the script and there it was – ‘Miss Piggy.’ I didn’t even have to remember who I was supposed to be playing because I was playing Moi. Also, I really enjoyed preparing for my part as a Paris fashion editor. I spent 6 months in
Paris shopping for clothes and charging it back to the production.” – Miss Piggy* *Longtime Muppets writer Jim Lewis assisted Miss Piggy in her statement.
‘Tent City, U.S.A.’ By Joseph J. Airdo In “Tent City, U.S.A.,” which will air 9 p.m. Thursday, April 5 on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, filmmaker Steven Cantor takes a look at homelessness in Nashville, Tenn. “Doug Sanders, the minister who is prominent in the film, makes an interesting point that the main thing that causes someone to become homeless is not so much the loss of a job or economic woes but rather the complete loss of a community. Here were people with no community of their own banding together to create a new community. We might not be fully cognizant of it, but we really need our friends and families in numerous ways. Without them, we could also be one misstep away from pretty serious hardship.” – Steven Cantor

way a team is currently playing.
ODDS ARE: BASEBALL IS BACK! The “Boys of Summer” have returned and being the gambler that you are – I suppose you were wondering “Just what are the chances my team will win the NL or AL pennant and go on to win the 2012 World Series?” As in past years, there were “Free Agent” signings, trades, spring training injuries, players that gave up the dream and retired and surprises like recently retired
pitcher Jamie Moyer, who came out of retirement to make the starting rotation with the Colorado Rockies at age 48! If he stays with the team this season he will have the distinction of being the oldest player in MLB history. Here’s pre-season look at the odds – called the “Baseball Futures” for the 2012 season - according to Vegas odds-makers. Remember these odds change daily based on trades, injuries to key players and the
ODDS TO WIN THE 2011 WORLD SERIES: Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 Los Angeles Angels 7-1 New York Yankees 7-1 Detroit Tigers 8-1 Boston Red Sox 10-1 Texas Rangers 10-1 San Francisco Giants 14-1 Tampa Bay Rays 18-1 Cincinnati Reds 20-1 Miami Marlins 21-1 Atlanta Braves 22-1 Arizona Diamondbacks 24-1 Milwaukee Brewers 25-1 St. Louis Cardinals 25-1 Washington Nationals 30-1 Colorado Rockies 35-1 Toronto Blue Jays 35-1 Chicago Cubs 40-1 Los Angeles Dodgers 40-1 Cleveland Indians 60-1 Chicago White Sox 65-1 Minnesota Twins 75-1 Kansas City Royals 80-1 New York Mets 80-1 Oakland Athletics 80-1 Seattle Mariners 99-1 San Diego Padres 100-1 Pittsburgh Pirates 100-1 Baltimore Orioles 150-1 Houston Astros 200-1
Now, before you get too depressed - by looking at your team’s odds (if they happen to be near the bottom)…keep this in mind, in recent history, some huge long shots went on to win the World Series like the St. Louis Cardinals did last year! They were given no chance to win the National League Wild Card – They did, No chance to win the NL Playoffs – They did, and all the top baseball prognosticators said they would get crushed in the World Series – WRONG AGAIN. So get out there and cheer your team on! Finally, again this year – there is no line available on Pete Rose being inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

Yearwood brings Southern comfort in ‘Trisha’s Southern Kitchen’
HESAID,S H E
SAID!
Even her most ardent fans were surprised when Trisha Yearwood put her music career on hold to craft a pair of best-selling cookbooks with mother Gwen and sister Beth. But family was foremost on the songbird’s mind when Gwen, Trisha’s most ardent supporter, was in the throes of a cancer battle that ultimately took her life in October 2011. Before she died, Gwen retooled the traditional Southern dishes on which she and her girls were raised into healthful cuisine. “She said, ‘I’d really like for the rest of my life to be good, and I want to take control of the things I can.’ ” Yearwood recalls. “She taught us to how make comfort food plant-based – and we address it in the show.” “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen,” premiering Saturday, April 14, on Food Network, features the devoted humanitarian gathering family and friends to swap stories and whip up favorite dishes.

Countless hours in the kitchen later, burning herself on a near daily basis and stubbornly refusing to purchase thousands of dollars’ worth of fancy cookware, Boughton has transformed numerous favorite recipes from highcalorie “fat bombs” into easy, light recipes.
Put the Mom Next Door to Work in Your Kitchen! Who doesn’t want a break from figuring out what’s for dinner tonight? Now every family can have guilt-free, easy-toprepare meals all the time. Author Tania N. Boughton struggled with food, weight loss and emotional eating for years before developing her new cookbook, Eating Light, Done Right: Simply Sinless Recipes from the Single Mom Next Door (Inspire On Purpose).
Drawing on her experience in the military counseling troops on weight control, Boughton quickly realized she loved helping people face the struggles within. The stories she shares are the true confessions of a reformed emotional eater who is trying to balance single
The best thing this cookbook offers is an easy approach to cooking healthy and losing weight without complicated, timeconsuming recipes and professionalgrade cookware. Boughton stated, “When I realized I was burying myself in food to deal with the emotional ups and downs of life, I knew I needed to change.” Realizing that countless other women struggle with weight loss issues and emotional eating, she began to work on a solution.

CHEERS! Arizona Vines & Wines is so excited to sponsor this new section in AZ Weekly – WINE! As the publisher of a wine magazine right here in Arizona, I jumped at the opportunity to share information about the local wine scene. So, grab a glass of your favorite vino, kick back and read on about WINE! - Rhonni Moffitt
ARIZONA WINE THROWDOWN AT THE HYATT! Have you ever wanted to do a blind tasting? There’s nothing like tasting a wine without any preconceived ideas. Most of the time, we don’t realize how easily our minds can affect our taste buds. On Friday nights at the Hyatt at Gainey Ranch in the Center Stage Bar, they have the “Arizona Wine Experience,” a throw-down of sorts, pairing Arizona wines blindly with otherwise well-known wines, wines that have made the cut to be served at the resort. At 5:30PM, the experience begins. An intimate group of eight are seated at a specially reserved private table and bar manager, Noah, guides the tasting. Head to head, each participant tastes the non-Arizona wine against a local brand … no coaching, no hints … just you and your palate. You might be surprised which wines you choose as your favorite. After the experience, head over to the

BEER! OPENING DAY, EPICURIAD AND SESSION BEERS What do Easter, Passover, Opening Day, Epicuriad and Session Beers have in common? All are being celebrated this
Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” weekend. Not much we can say here about Easter and Passover, so we will focus on Opening Day, Epicuriad and Session Beers. So, let’s get Easter and Passover out of the way first. There are not quite as many beers celebrating Easter as there are for Christmas, although a couple come to mind. First off, Mikkeller, those wacky Danes have not one, but two Easter beers. Try Hoppy Easter, which has also been known as Drikkeriget GIPA. It is a selfdescribed “German IPA” so named for the use of German aroma hops. Also floating around is Funky (E) or Funky E-Star or Funky Easter. Either way, an interesting beer. You could also go with
PaulanerSalvator, the first of the German Dopplebocks, since the name translates to Savior. The Salvator would also go well with a traditional Easter ham, as would a nice Belgian Tripel, for example TripelKarmeliet. If lamb is your thing for Easter, how about something nice and malty? Perhaps a Moose Drool Brown ale or a Tommyknocker Vienna Amber? Either would have the richness to stand up to the lamb, but still allow the flavor of the meat to come through. Passover is a little more of a challenge since beer is inherently not Kosher for Passover. We suggest a nice flavorful cider like

PALE 31
Hello again craft beer lovers, today lets chat about another great California brew that has caught my attention in the last couple of months. PALE 31 from the Firestone Walker Brewing Company in Paso Robles, CA. First, let me start by saying that Firestone Walker has won the Midsize Brewery of the Year award at the Great American Beer Festival an unheard of three times! How cool is that? Pale31 is a very session-able pale ale coming in at 4.8 percent ABV. This is important as you can drink this little gem for long periods without finding yourself out of sorts too quickly. The name Pale31 was created in homage to California being the thirty first state added to the union and suits the beers character perfectly. I have also discovered that this brew has won gold medals at GABF and The World Beer Cup. It pours a clean golden straw colour with a thin white head and huge citrus aromas. On the palate, the citrus essence is accompanied by the perfect amount of hop bitterness for a west coast style pale ale.Given, the ABV, what I love most about this brew is the body. There are very few session beers that drink like this. Thanks to an impeccable grain balance, the big hop character is accompanied by the perfect amount of mouth feel and texture. You would never guess this was a session beer until glancing at the label. Perfect pairings include large noodle pasta with a spicy meat sauce or pastrami on rye with Swiss cheese and a deli pickle. The booze pairing is easy, a generous shot of Jameson Irish whiskey for sipping.

delight and an Olympiad. A variety of top chefs will be matched up with beer and wine with a challenge to create some wonderful pairings. The crowd will vote on the best pairings with both the wine and the beer and a winner will be crowned. Last year, Beau MacMillan from Elements at the Sanctuary took home the big prize. Elements is back this year, but they have some tough competition from Jeremy Pacheco from Lons at the Hermosa, Ken Arneson from Rico’s American Grille, Chris Bailey from Taggia at Firesky (don’t discount the home field advantage, Joshua Riesner from Atlas Bistro and Matt Carter from Zinc Bistro, The Mission and most recently, The House in Old Town Scottsdale, along with several others. Crispin Honey Crisp, or maybe a mead, Redstone’s Traditional Mountain Honey Wine comes to mind. After Passover, transition back to beer with one of the certified Kosher beers from He’Brew. We are partial to Lenny’s Bittersweet R.I.P.A and Origin. Next up is Opening Day. Beer and Baseball go together as part of an American tradition. Even the staunchest wine drinker can be found sipping on a beer at the ball park. Of course your selection at Chase Field may be limited, so look for something from Leinenkugel or New Belgium. Either way you can enjoy the game with a nice craft beer in hand. Even if the Diamondbacks lose, a couple of these make it more palatable. Friday night finds the Beer For Brains Foundation celebrating the second annual Epicuriad at Firesky Resort. The name connotes the fact that this event is a cross between an epicurean’s

No matter which chef gets the medal, the real winner is you. The food, beer and wine will all be outstanding. Great music, silent auctions and an opportunity to support an amazing hometown charity that is starting to go national, and maybe even international all add up to an event that can’t be missed. How about a little teaser on some of the great beers and wine that will be there? Sure. Beer from SanTan Brewing, Deschutes, Odell, Oskar Blues, Papago, College Street, Firestone Walker, Grand Canyon, Crispin Cider, Sleepy Dog and Four Peaks will all be available. Look for a couple of specialties including the Seven Wives Saison from Sonoran. Wines available will include Galante Estates Pinot Noir, Pieropan Soave, Palmeri Van Ness Syrah, Three Rivers Cabernet Sauvignon, MasiModello Russo, Godwin Chardonnay and more. This event will be a special showdown. Go to www.bfbf.org for more information and tickets. Continued on Page 33...
What kind of great session beers can you find in Arizona…
Americans can make some great session beers as well. Breckenridge Agave Wheat (4.2%) and Vanilla Porter (4.7%) both make the cut, as does Left Hand Good JuJu (4%). Try something from Lost Coast. Great White (4.8%) hits the target and Downtown Brown (5%) and Tangerine Wheat Continued on Page 34...

So we have had International Stout Day, and IPA Day, but how about a day devoted to everyday beers, the ones we drink when we go out, or enjoy at home on a Tuesday night? Those beers that we pour when we plan on having several. In other words, Session Beers. The definition of Session Beers varies sometimes with each person defining it, but a rough working definition is a flavorful, but not overpowering beer with sufficiently low ABV that an individual could enjoy several of them without noticeable effect. Does that sound good? ABV level will be different for each person, but I think a good point is anywhere below 5.0% . We can celebrate these great beers anytime of the year, but this Saturday, April 7th the Session Beer Project wants us all to enjoy Session Beer Day. If you sometimes get a little overwhelmed with an amazing variety of beers featuring 17% ABV and Kopi Luwak (look it up) encrusted hop cones fermented on a bed of wood chips harvested from only certain oak trees that grow on the north side of a Scottish hillside, then this is the day for you.
we’ve got plenty of them. For starters, Krombacher Pilsner and Krombacher Dark definitely belong in this category. These are two outstanding beers that weigh in at 4.8% and 4.3% respectively. KrombacherPils is the top selling Pilsner in Germany, a country known for its lagers, so it has to be good. Krombacher Dark is a beer style that is starting to gain popularity in the United States, a lower ABV, dark rich beer that offers great flavor and is sessionable. Another beer in that category (albeit an ale, not a lager) also comes from Europe, although this one is from Liverpool. Cains Dark Mild is only 3.2% and 96 calories with a full body and a distinctive taste. This beer has one three medals at the Great British Beer Festival for Best Mild.

“Give it a chance is all I can say” Devil’s Den sports grill is pretty cool. It is nothing great but I started to fall in love with the staff, so that kept me there longer. The specials are different daily: Mondays they have dollar sliders, and dollar PBR’s, Tuesdays it is two dollar you call it, Wednesdays it is .25 cent wings! They are actually really good, but do not beat Native! I like the fact that they have sports memorabilia on the walls, so that’s awesome to look at. This place is actually pretty big for somewhere on Mill, and I hope that they do really well! 4 East University Drive. Tempe, AZ 85251

THE “JOCK TAX”
Did you know that twenty states require visiting athletes to pay state income tax for games played within the state? Reported in the L.A. Times, NFL players typically file in 10 to 12 jurisdictions. NBA is somewhere between 16 and 20. MLB is somewhere between 20 and 26, and the NHL is between 14 and 16, “The lion’s share of most players’ income, their salary, is taxed in the city and state where the team is based. Other income such as; endorsements, personal appearances, dividends and interest income, are taxed in their state of residence. Players must claim the value of gift bags and other

“swag” they receive at awards ceremonies and celebrity events as income. As dazzling as sports players’ salaries are, the pros play offense and defense to preserve theirs. Behind every sports star, one can only recommend their needs to be an astute certified public accountant quick-stepping through a maze of state and local income taxes known as the “jock tax.” Most states use the “duty days” method, dividing the player’s number of work days by the number of days spent playing in the state. A few use the “games played” method, dividing the number of games in the season by the number played in the state. Today there’s E-FILE, but in the old days, for example, a player who lived in California not only had to file in all of those different states, but was required to provide a copy of each state return with his/her federal return. The average NBA player could pay tax in 20 states. And just to give accountants more gray hairs, no two states do it exactly alike. All those state filings can make for one doorstop of a tax return.

There comes a point when going to Scottsdale clubs and hipster bars that play indie dance music and wordless tunes, becomes a somewhat tired routine. Finding and trying on at least four different outfits, messing up your hair multiple times, then running into the same people you always see out on Saturday night—or rather, the same type of people. Yes, yes, it’s all fun for awhile but everyone craves something new and something different than what you know will still be there next week. Hypnotica may be the answer to the drab night club routine you may be experiencing. Instead of seeing the same folk lingering in the crowd surrounding the bar, you’ll be able to feast your eyes on four differing perspectives, four different stages contrasting in decoration, style, and DJ. With international electronic music DJs lined up to play their hits for a mass of people, boredom seems very unlikely. Hungarian disc jockeys, Myon and Shane 54, will spin jams compelling enough to thunder through your bones, while British Michael Woods’ magnetic beats bounce between your brain’s synapses, creating dance movements you were never aware of having. Brazilian DJs, Darth and Vader, will bring you to sweat with their mixes and just when you think you’ve cooled down enough to catch your breath, LA Dubstepper, Druley will start to rock the house and get everyone’s blood vibrating. It’ll be a long night with over 30 DJs spinning so be prepared and eat before you go without guilt because you’re sure to burn at least a thousand calories. Oh, so you get a little hungry after drinking and dancing for hours? No worries! Purchase a snack at the venue’s vendor village. By the way, in case you haven’t already realized, this is a rave so the location is discreet and won’t be revealed until the day of the event (fully legal, I assure you). Please use the following information to partake and enjoy the adventure. Friday, April 6th. 7 pm – 3 am. Somewhere near downtown Phoenix. Tickets @ http://fla.vor.us/
hypnotica or at the event starting at $25. http://hypnoticamusicfestival. com. Ages 16+ Portugal. The Man at Crescent Ballroom Downtown Phoenix’s Crescent Ballroom offers Phoenicians an alternative type of nighttime entertainment. Of course there are music venues around the valley that bring in mega musicians and artists with a ginormous following-making it sometimes difficult to feel like you’re actually breathing the same air with a rock star--but at Crescent Ballroom you can almost feel the heat radiating from a performer’s spotlit body. In such an intimate setting, the music saturates the room’s attendees and the tone of the entire venue. Indie rock band, Portugal. The Man, would be an ideal concert to experience there. The band’s music is chill enough to just stand and listen to--you could even chit-chat with your peeps at the bar while listening to them, yet their sound can also be attention-demanding enough to bounce around to. If you want a change of pace, the lounge offers a break and the outdoor patio provides fresh air. Overall, it’s a great venue to check out different and new artists you may end up loving. Check their website for upcoming shows. Friday, April 6th. 8 pm. www.crescentphx.com. $22.50. Ages 18+

DANGERS…. There are dangers, of course. Concealed rocks are the most obvious and as anyone who has ever jumped into a lake or the sea from a great height knows, water can hurt. Falling well and being prepared for landing are both key. Even the most hardcore deep water soloists rarely climb alone and have either a rescue boat or a mate standing by. Thought also has to be given to getting out of the water.
DEEP WATER SOLOING In the World of Climbing… DWS brings a Rush unlike the Rest!! Deep water solo, or DWS, is naturally more popular in the warm climate of the Mediterranean. However, in the summer months there are plenty of
unroped climbers to be found above the water around the globe. DWS is growing fast - and like any other climbing discipline, it has dedicated followers. The concept is simple. Take one climbing route that goes above water. Remove your harness and leave the rope at home. Climb… and either get to the top or get wet.
April 5th, 2012 - April 11th, 2012 AZWeeklyMagazine.com
Before setting hand or foot on a DWS climb, it’s worth considering the tide and the wave action. What’s safe at high tide on a flat day may not be safe at low tide or in a heavy swell. Good climbers evaluate the path of the route and look at where the danger points may be. It’s important to understand where (if anywhere) it’s safe to fall and whether or not you need to push off and away from the cliff as you start to go. WHY DO IT? Although there is a lot to think about
before committing to a DWS route (once you’re on you either finish or fall) it’s also very liberating. You don’t have to worry about rope drag and there is no need to stop and clip bolts or place nuts and cams. It’s not bouldering, a couple of moves and then it’s over, but rather a full-length, full-strength route of anything up to 100ft high, or more. It’s pure climbing and the whole mental and physical experience of climbing. No
All climbers should try it at least once. Get some friends together and head somewhere adventurous this summer. Take as many spare pairs of dry shoes as you can and a couple of extra chalkbags. Start with a safe traverse or two and move on to easy
