ARTS! Presented by Fountain Hills Community Theatre at Fountain Hills Community Theatre Through April 22 This night in September of 1934 is the biggest in the history of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, as world famous tenor Tito Morelli is to perform Otello, his greatest role, at the gala season opener. Saunders, the harried General Manager, hopes this will put Cleveland on the cultural map. Morelli is nowhere to be found; when he finally arrives drunk, it is too late for any rehearsal. Through a hilarious series of mishaps, ‘Il Stupendo’ is given a double dose of tranquilizers which mix with the booze he has consumed and he passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he is dead. What to do? Saunders coaxes Max into Morelli’s costume, intending to fool the audience with this fake ‘Il Stupendo’, blackface and all. Nervous amateur Max succeeds admirably, but Morelli revives and dresses for his second act. With two Otellos now in costume and two women en dishabille, each thinking she is with ‘Il Stupendo’, the farce spins out of control onstage and off.

Artists have challenged art by situating it in non-art contexts. ‘Street’ artists do not aspire to change the definition of an artwork, but rather to question the existing environment with its own language. They attempt to have their work communicate with everyday people about socially relevant themes in ways that are informed by esthetic values without being imprisoned by them. In other words, “cool as heck.” Throughout the next few issues, we’ll take an up-close, sneak peak look at some of the most awe-inspiring, head-turning, larger than life masterpieces found all around the globe, in many major countries, cities and places you would never imagine could be turned into a world class canvas of epic proportions.

‘Blue Like Jazz’
Randy: “While watching ‘Blue Like Jazz,’ my contempt for the film kept growing and growing. It features stereotypical characters doing stereotypical things, all while trying to prove and/or disprove the value of religion. By the time the film ended, I somewhat began to appreciate the message trying to be delivered. Rarely does it take days to process a movie, but this one has. The jury is still out. You will have to check back with me in a few days.” Grade: C Joseph: “‘Blue Like Jazz’ is not a religious movie. Rather, it is a movie in which the role that religion plays in one’s life is examined. If you fail to understand the difference, you have likely not had the pleasure of enduring the perpetual preaching that is typical of most faith-based films. Fortunately, Steve Taylor’s new dramedy, which is based on a book with the same title by Donald Miller, does not subscribe to that technique and instead communicates the importance of spiritual self-reflection in a far more organic fashion.” Grade: C
A devout 19-year-old college student (Marshall Allman) impulsively transfers to one of the most liberal schools in America. His new surroundings force him to confront some previously held biases and decide what it is that he truly believes. (PG-13 – 107 minutes) Stan: “With an earnest effort to present the extremes of believers and non-believers, or those of us who may be of a different faith or perhaps in the middle, ‘Blue Like Jazz’ becomes quite the tedious viewing resembling the faith-based ‘preaching to the choir’ films for the first half of the movie until it finally heads toward the intended message that spirituality is the core of mankind and our personal journey of the discovery and expression of that spirituality is the basis of our actions.” Grade: C
‘Bully’
lost children to suicide and a mother awaiting the fate of her 14-year-old daughter who has been incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus. (PG-13 – 113 minutes) Stan: “While admirable in the attempt to focus on the ages old bullying of youths, director Lee Hirsch accentuates the more visible physical cases while the greater number of victims are psychologically bullied, now more than ever, with the emergence of technological advances and ‘cyber bullies’send threatening and harassing emails and instant messages to the victims, while others post rumors or gossip and instigate others to participate, is totally omitted.”Grade: CRandy: “Everyone has been bullied at school at some point in their life, for one reason or another; whether the bullying be for reasons such as sexual preference, self-identity, or just for being different than the rest. This moving documentary introduces audiences to several students from around the United States that are each being bullied for various reasons. The audience cannot help but be angry at school officials for their ‘perceived’ lack of caring, though a discerning viewer may question the film’s editing just a bit.” Grade: B Joseph: “‘Bully’ is not only a bad movie, it is also an irresponsible one that has the potential to do more harm than good. Lee Hirsch’s new documentary perpetuates the perspective that bullying exists as an extreme. The unfortunate reality is that bullying is rarely as conspicuous as it is in the movie. By avoiding that truth, Hirsch has made nothing more than a placebo that will afford the filmmaker accolades from the naïve, who will continue to ignore the pain endured by those who need help the most.” Grade: F

‘The Cabin in the Woods’ A young professional (Chris Hemsworth) visits a quaint cabin in the woods with a group of friends and ends up scratching the surface of something so massive and horrific that they can only begin to fathom it as time quickly runs out. (R – 95 minutes)
‘Lockout’*
Stan: “In the tradition of cult ‘B’ horror film genres with a twist, director and co-writer Drew Goddard delivers the traditional ‘bump scares’ along the way while adding the right amount of humor to slide the viewer into complacency as each setup for the next ‘scare’ is revealed, leading us to the grandest twist to date for a horror film ending!” Grade: B Joseph: “‘The Cabin in the Woods’ features quite possibly the best grand finale ever experienced in a horror movie. It is just a shame that we could not have arrived there any sooner. Directing a screenplay he co-wrote with ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ creator Joss Whedon, Drew Goddard literally pulls the rug out from the viewer with this film. Unfortunately, he allows the viewer to stand on said rug for what seems like an eternity before doing so. This ap-
‘Lockout’ follows a falsely convicted ex-government agent (Guy Pearce) whose one chance at obtaining freedom lies in the dangerous mission of rescuing the president’s daughter (Maggie Grace) from rioting convicts at an outer space maximum-security prison. (PG-13 – 95 minutes)

Valerie Weiss is whiny and selfabsorbed. Needless to say, nobody in their right mind would root for her to winning over the man of her dreams in the movie, thereby preventing the motion picture from winning over the viewer. Still, some scenes (meaning awkward situations) are amusing enough to warrant a watch.” Grade: D

Stan: “Welsh writer/directorGareth Evans continues to enhance his style of high-octane action story telling he established in 2009’s ‘Merantau’. Using the city of Jakarta once again as the backdrop and the return of rising martial arts star Iko Uwais, his latest takes place within the confines of a high-rise stronghold setting a new bar for non-stop martial arts action sequences while weaving his tale of sibling redemption.” Grade: B
‘Losing Control’ Frustrated by life’s unpredictability and determined to apply scientific principles to her love life, a Harvard graduate student (Miranda Kent) sets off on a series of wild dating adventures that ultimately lead to her understanding that nothing in life can be controlled. (R – 91 minutes) Joseph: “‘Losing Control’ proves that romantic comedies are only as likeable as their protagonists. Unfortunately, Miranda Kent’s character in the new flick from writer/director

Joseph: “If ‘This is Not a Film’ is not a film, does it change the way in which the viewer requests a refund? According to press materials, the new documentary was shot partially on an iPhone and smuggled into France in a cake. Given all of that trouble that Panahi and director Mojtaba Mirtahmasb went through, one would think that the movie would consist of more than several shots of an iguana, a couple of tedious telephone calls and a routine reading of a screenplay.” Grade: D

The violence works here and it works well. The plot may be somewhat unrealistic, but who cares? There is enough action to keep you on the edge of your seat. ‘The Raid’ may go down as a modern classic in its own right.” Grade: A Joseph: “Despite what you have heard, ‘The Raid: Redemption’ is monotonous and boring. Filmmaker Gareth Evans’ Indonesian actioner serves up some stunning cinematography but that and a bunch of martial arts does not a good movie make. Instead, it merely makes a series of fight sequences, each of which is a variation of the one that preceded it. They join forces to find the cure but soon realize their lives are danger if they expose the truth. (NR – 109 minutes) Joseph: “As evidenced with ‘Sweetwater,’Brian Skiba is a decent director. Unfortunately, Kim Hughes is not much of a screenwriter. It is never quite clear what Hughes’ intention is with the new motion picture, which is part inspirational drama and part conspiracy theory thriller. There are simply some things that should not be mixed with one another. However, if nothing else, the flick demonstrates that Skiba – 2011 Arizona Filmmaker of the Year – continues to fine-tune his technical abilities.” Grade: D

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released in theaters.
As far as directing goes, boy I loved the work more than I realized! Filmmaking is incredible; it forces you to examine yourself. Being a writer you sit in a room all by yourself all day and all night sometimes. I loved the aspect of working with 300 people with the creative control, in charge of everything, capturing the images to present the essence and the heart of the story.
Filmmaker Drew Goddard (‘The Cabin in the Woods’) By Stan Robinson “This film started with my writing partner Joss Whedon. We’ve been writing together for over ten years, we started talking and horror came up. We had done horror before and wanted to get back to that. We didn’t set it up with a studio first, but rather we wrote it about what we thought we would want to see in the horror film genre. After we completed our script, we pulled together the total and complete package with the budget and everything else that would be needed to actually start shooting,

We (Joss Whedon) love the horror movies and we set out with the ultimate horror movie in mind, like a love letter to the genre. I love going to horror movies, especially when the genre includes laughing as much as screaming, that’s what we set out for with this movie. Just to let you know, this movie is worth the time, it has that balance and we wanted something different other than people just getting killed and this movie is totally different and goes totally insane, because it’s not like anything you’ve ever seen with a twist you don’t see coming!” – Drew Goddard

SAID!
The Best Vegan BBQ You’ve Probably Never Had. My first introduction to Green (locations in Tempe and Phoenix) was at the 2011 Certified Local Fair. The sweet smell of barbeque sauce called to me, and a kind faced girl behind the booth offered me chicken on a skewer. Little did I know, it wasn’t really chicken. www. greenvegetarian.com I will openly admit that when walking the isles of a street fair on a perfect weather day; I will eat what is handed to me without question. I am also prone to impulse buying loads of handmade crafty items I really don’t need, but that is for another column. When choosing content for the Dine and Detox section of the LocalLily.com Go to Guide {Spring 2012}, Green was at the top of my list. Any kitchen that can satisfy the bbq cravings of a meat eater such as myself deserves a shout out in my book.
THE
TASTE-OFF
Green is a 100% vegan restaurant that features new American style “comfort” food. Pizza $8-$10, po-boys $8, noodle bowls $7.50, and desserts like vegan cookies and homemade soft serve soy ice cream all made with fresh, vegan ingredients. Restaurants like Green may be rare, however it just goes to prove that vegan and gluten free food doesn’t have to be chewy, soggy or a sad substitute for the traditional. Food lovers like Chef Damon at Green is a master at celebrating vegetables and honoring the kind comfort food we all crave. THE BEST OF THE FEST A culmination to a week of culinary abundance
A favorite event of the Scottsdale Culinary Festival is the “Best of Fest” dinner held on Sunday after the festivities of the Great Arizona Picnic on Sunday evening. All week long there are events to tantalize your taste buds, whether you love beer, cocktails, bubbly or just eat all the delectable goodness that’s offered up at the 20 different showcased events/ venues. Winding down the celebration is the “Best of the Fest,” a culinary extravaganza featuring nine of Arizona’s top chefs paired with renowned wineries. Last year, guests entered the beautiful setting at the Hyatt Gainey Ranch, sitting al fresco
on the grass, listening to beautiful soft live music, meeting the other attendees and friends. Every table was assigned a chef and a winery. The cuisine was prepared tableside as a representative from the winery explained each pairing. Friendly competition arose as each chef tried to outdo the others in their chosen ingredients and preparation. A truly wonderful event from beginning to end.
This year the event takes place on April 22nd at the Scottsdale Waterfront with a new assortment of chefs and wines. At $175 a

Customers stop in for a tasting, sample the daily open-bottle selections, and peruse a simple but effective display of 100 wines under $25, laid out according to flavor and body. Patrons are encouraged to ask questions, share flavor preferences, discuss food pairings, or simply stay awhile and enjoy. “The selection is second to none. It’s Getting Hot in Here O.K., most people have heard that you should serve red wines at room temperature and white wines out the refrigerator, as cold as possible. That’s what I believed for a long time until I learned better. Yes, you don’t want to serve a white wine too warm or a red wine too cold, but there is a happy medium that
brings out the nuances of the flavors of the wine at a certain range of temperatures. And, if you want to get technical, there are different optimal ranges of temperature for different types of wines, too. As a general rule, follow this: Full bodied red wines (Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux, etc.) ... 58° - 65°
Light bodied red wines (Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, etc.) …55° - 63° Full bodied white wines (Chardonnay, Burgundy, etc.) … 45° - 53° Light bodied white wines and rosés (Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, etc.) … 43° - 50° Sparkling and dessert wines … 43° - 46° The reasoning … most of what we experience when tasting wine is contributed by the aroma (about 80%). When a wine is served too cold, the wine has a limited bouquet and the wine can appear to be a little flat, lacking in body and flavor. When a wine is served too warm the smell is actually amplified which means that alcohol will tend to dominate and you’ll experience more “heat” in the wine than flavor, and any flaws in the wine will tend to be accentuated.
Try this for yourself. Experiment. Chill a white wine and take a taste. Then warm up the glass with your hands and note how the flavors change as the temperature increases. Do the same with a red wine. Chill it down; warm it up, sampling the wine along the way. Find your happy place. If you are at a restaurant and are served a bottle of red wine that is too warm … don’t hesitate to ask for a wine bucket. We do it all the time. Drop the wine in the ice bath for a little while and pull it out when it arrives at your optimal temperature. Is your wine too cold? Warm it up in the glass with your hands and decline the ice bucket. Don’t worry if the server gives you a funny look – you are the one paying for the wine and you are the one drinking it. You deserve to enjoy it at its full potential! Article concept paraphrased from original article written by Jay Bileti, “The Hot and Cold of It,” printed in the Fall 2010 issue of Arizona Vines & Wines Magazine.
FIRST EVER SOUTHEAST ARIZONA WINE GROWERS FESTIVAL Head down to Sonoita for the weekend of April 14th& 15th to taste the wines of 17 Arizona wineries, all in one location. Each day will be filled with new wine releases, fabulous winemakers, great food and live music! “We are bringing together winemakers from every wine region within Arizona,” states winemaker and host Kief Manning. “With the exception of the Phoenix wineries, all attendees have the common bond of growing grapes in Southeastern Arizona.” In addition to wine tasting, the expanded festival will include sensory wine tasting and wine pairing seminars. Tickets are on sale now or can be purchased the day of the event. Cost is $15 and includes wine tasting and a souvenir glass. The event will be held at Kief-Joshua Vineyards from 10AM to 5PM. BEER! Beer and Baseball Last week was the 142nd Opening Day for Major League Baseball. Many things have changed throughout the history of the game, but one constant has been enjoying the feel of a cold beer (okay, maybe a lukewarm beer) in your hand as you watch the gentle rhythm of the game. The sight of a beer sloshing over the top as a fan reaches for a foul ball, unsure of whether to give up on the beer or the

And, of course, that first beer at the ball park with a father or mother watching a team you have grown up with, is a special memory for all. For me, it was the 1980 World Series, Game 2, Phillies vs Royals, watching the team I grew up with, enjoying a beer with my father as we sat in the upper deck. But I digress; the real issue is the availability of quality beer at the ballparks. Throughout the country, the folks that run the stadium concessions are starting to realize that good beer is an important part of people’s lives and we are starting to see it offered at the ballparks, albeit in limited quantities. Regardless, it’s a good feeling to be able to enjoy a craft beer while sitting in the stands. Chase Field, home of the Diamondbacks offers a small assortment of craft beers,
including Fat Tire and Leinenkugels. Other stadiums offer a variety of craft beers as well. What is the best ball park for beer? Arguably, Coors Field in Denver, which features the award winning Sandlot Brewery right on the prem-

ises, may have the best opportunity to drink great beer. Sandlot, enjoyed by beer enthusiasts for their variety of great beers, is more commonly known as the brewery that created Blue Moon. This popular beer based on the Belgian Wit style was developed by the talented brewers at Sandlot. By the way if you are watching a Rockies game in Denver, the best place for a pregame or postgame meal and good beer is the Breckenridge Ballpark Brew Pub right across the street. If you’re just looking for a beer, a little farther away on 22nd street is Great Divide Brewery and Tasting Room. Locally, good beer is starting to make an appearance in the downtown stadium area of Phoenix. Have a pre-game meal and enjoy some fine Continued on Page 34...

SEVEN WIVES SAISON
Hello again beer lovers, today lets switch gears and chat about Seven Wives Saison from Sonoran Brewing here in Phoenix AZ. If memory serves me correctly, this is the very first Saison or Farmhouse Style ale brewed here in the Grand Canyon state. A collaborative effort between Sonoran and Chef Jeremy Pacheco from Lon’s at the Hermosa, this new brew was created for pairing with fine cuisine. As you might guess from the name, exactly seven different spices were used in its creation and were all sourced locally. On the nose, you’ll first notice essences of bright citrus and coriander, then pepper and honey as the thick white head begins to settle. On the palate, you will discover this brew has all the makings of a true Belgian farmhouse style. It’s light and refreshing with many underlying complexities and just a hint of funk. As you move beyond the big citrus character you’ll notice earthy tones of pepper and clove with a slight hop astringency that reminds you of ginger. This is the perfect beer for our arid Arizona summer days. If you are a fan of unfiltered wheat beers and are considering expanding upon your appreciation of craft ales, this would be a great place to start. Besides, when else will you ever be able to say that you sipped upon Seven Wives? Gotta Love It!
Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com
Foods pairings should include cool summer salads with seasonal fruit, goat’s cheese and a light honey lemon dressing or lamb kabobs with a tangy yogurt sauce on warm pita bread. The perfect booze pairing is a Kettle One chilled with a slice of lime. My mouth is simply watering at the prospect of how beautifully this beer will pair with summer cuisine. As always, thanks for tuning in and keep sending those comments and questions to kingjamesswann@gmail.com. Cheers!

Roosevelt Tavern makes a fine stop after the game and always features some fun beers, as does Lost Leaf Gallery with a really nice selection of craft bottles. Pita Jungle, Greenhouse and Coach and Willies are all great stops as well.

Some of you may not like to deal with the hassle of going to the game, dealing with traffic, parking and lines for the rest room (especially if you enjoy a couple of Fat Tires during the game). So you find a local bar and settle back to watch the Diamondbacks or your favorite team on the television. That’s okay, we have great beer for you there as well. Try Mushroom Mellow in North Phoenix or Tempe with an incredible selection of craft beer. Boulders on Broadway in Tempe is another great spot to catch the game at the bar, while enjoying everything from SKA Decadent to Lost Coast Great White. Taste of Tops in Tempe and Draw 10 are two places that always have a great selection of beer to choose from while you watch the game on their flat screen televisions. I could go on and on, but you get the point. Plenty of great places to watch the game and enjoy great beer.

Many of us enjoy sitting at home watching the game in the comfort of our own favorite chair with a variety of beer close at hand in a cooler or refrigerator. This is truly the way to get what you want. Pyramid has just released their summer seasonal, Curve Ball; it doesn’t matter what level of ballplayer you are, this is one Curve Ball you can handle. A refreshing, lighter beer done in the Kolsch style, it’s very enjoyable to watch a game with. Finally, what may be the consummate baseball beer, Bell’s Oberon. We are fortunate in Arizona because we get this beer year round. However, in the rest of the country, Oberon is brewed and released specifically for the baseball season. Oberon Day this year was March 26th and the beer will last until late September, early October when it will fade with the World Series hopes of all but two teams. Beer is a great accompaniment to baseball. An easy sipping beer perfectly matches the pace of the game and no matter what you choose to drink, something just feels right about these two summer partners. Perhaps later in the summer, we can revisit this topic and look at great beers from the playoff cities. Until then, Play Ball!

“Who am I kidding? I love beer, and they have a lot of it!” The convenience of living in college town is that you can really ride your bike almost anywhere. Boulders on Broadway is absolutely one of those spots. Happy hour is Monday-Friday, 3pm-7pm. They do offer reverse happy hour four days a week from 10pm-close. I am a sucker for happy hour, and on Saturday it is available from open to close…definitely my kind of happy hour. The drafts are a dollar off during these times, $3.25 wells and an appetizer menu for $2.50. There is nothing fancy about this place, there are a lot of TV’s that supply you with sports games, and there is a lot of space so you do not feel crowded. Craft beers are something that immensely sprouted in AZ, and I love it here. 530 West Broadway Tempe, AZ 85282
“try not to judge this book by its cover” Mi Patio is one of those places that you don’t really notice when you drive by, but the deals will bring you in now that you know. They have $1.99 margaritas, all day, every day, I love getting the awesome drink specials of course! Their food is inexpensive but your atmosphere is what you would expect from some random little Mexican place. I did love their quesadillas and tacos! It is conveniently located next to the Hidden House so after words you can go and party the rest of the night away! 3347 North 7th Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85013 www.facebook.com/carrie.gurule

MIM (the Music Instrument Theater) will be hosting a unique show on Wednesday April 18th at 7pm. If you like things that stray just a little from the beaten path, you should definitely give Caravan of Thieves a listen. Driving gypsy-jazz rhythms, acoustic guitars, upright bass, and violin lay the foundation for For a ‘gypsy-jazz-bohemian’ change of pace, catch Caravan of Thieves at the Music mesmerizing vocal harmonies and fantastic stories. The group Instrument Museum Wednesday April 18th. has been known to perform fun, four-part renditions of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” If Django Reinhardt, the cast of Stomp, and the Beatles all had a party at Tim Burton’s house, Caravan of Thieves would be the band they would hire. MIM is located at 4725 E. Mayo Blvd. in Scottsdale. Check out www. caravanofthieves.com or www.theMIM.org for more information and tickets. Download a free song at www.caravanofthieves.com/freebie el Pedregal continues its wine and music festival on Sunday, April 15th with a FREE concert by award winning saxophonist, Dominic Amato. Amato performs a highly energetic and expertly mastered magnetic tapestry of smooth jazz saxophone. Amato is a bandleader that intertwines the voice of his instrument with interesting layers of rhythms and harmonies. Performing with Amato will be Will Gaines on Bass, Ira King on Drums, Kendall Gilder on Guitar and Louie Higuera on Keyboards. El Pedregal Shops & Dining is located at 34505 N. Scottsdale Rd. in Scottsdale.

CARNIVAL OF THIEVES Performing Live at MIM April 18th Driving gypsy-jazz rhythms, acoustic guitars, upright bass, and violin lay the foundation for mesmerizing vocal harmonies and fantastic stories. Carnival Of Thieves has been known to perform fun, four-part renditions of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” If Django Reinhardt, the cast of Stomp, and the Beatles all had a party at Tim Burton’s house, Caravan of Thieves would be the band they would hire.
The group started with a married couple- Fuzz and Carrie Sangiovanni, (guitar, vocals, various percussive “instruments”) writing and performing as a duo. “It started as a romantic, bohemian vision of a couple making music, performing on the road, in parks, venues, traveling around and avoiding responsibility as much as possible,” says Fuzz. In the spring of 2008, Fuzz and Carrie extended their family to include fiery violinist Ben Dean and double bass madman, Brian Anderson completing their colorful vision. Since then, the four of them ran away from home and never looked back.
Showtime: 7pm. Tickets: $20, $25. For more information and to purchase tickets, please call 480.478.6000 or visit www. theMIM.org

The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS
Monsterland Bar & Grill Grand Opening Aghhh real monsters! The real freaks come out on Friday the 13ths to scare the willies out of those who try to party in downtown Mesa. Yes, downtown Mesa, that huge suburban area east of Phoenix where a large population of Republicans and old timers live and rule. Perhaps things are a-changin in good old East Val because old town Mesa is attempting to bring in a younger, more adventurous crowd by allowing Monsterland Bar and Grill to open on one of the most superstitious days of the year. In the fall, when kids dress as Disney heroes and adults dress as sluts, Monsterland becomes a two-story haunted attraction with expensive animatronics and Hollywood FX that supposedly evokes fear in the hearts of those who venture within its walls. In the off season, however, the spooky décor and tone of the venue remain to offer patrons something other than sand, beach umbrellas, and swanky lounge accessories to look at after consuming numerous shots of liquor and pints of beer. All of a sudden that giant, artificial monster may jump from the corner and start singing Nikki Minaj for all you know. That would be scary, indeed. So you may as well see what this monstrous bar has to offer and what sorts of local brews and specialty cocktails are flowing from their bar. Such a quirky place calls for some anachronistic jams. Live music performed by the 8Teaze will [re]kindle your love for Billy Idol and Duran Duran making you do a little shuffle shuffle across their brand new dance floor. Make your scuff marks while the wax is still fresh. Friday, April 13th. 7pm. 18 W Main. Free
Tequilazona at Tempe Marketplace Any time you involve tequila in your nighttime affairs, something magical seems to happen--and when I use
the word magical, I don’t necessary mean good. Let’s of course hope that you have an adventurous night filled with new experiences, fun, and perhaps even amor but in order for you to encounter the magic, you must be risky and just take the shot. Shots of tequila can either feel wonderful and warm sliding down your throat or awful, leaving a burning sensation that tickles your esophagus until you shoot down some cerveza to clear way for more. Either way, if a shot of tequila is presented to you, it’s really hard to say no, especially when that shot has good breeding behind it like Don Julio or Milagro. Tequila! If you’re someone who can stand the taste of distilled blue agave juice, bring your valor to Tempe Marketplace this Saturday to support Public Radio Arizona. With your entrance-fee-donation, you’ll have the opportunity to sample some of finest premium tequila available as well as partake in the delicious snacks provided by Tempe Marketplace’s best. There will also be live Latin music by Sonan and salsa dancing (Ow! Ow!). If you’re not down with downing shots of tequila, other beverages with the nectar will be available. Buy your tickets in advance or spend $15 more at the door, however, keep in mind that it is a fundraiser. Saturday, April 14th. 6 pm – 9 pm. 2000 E. Rio Salado Pkwy. www.tequilazona.com. $45-$60.

public. For example, simple suspensions were added to the original rigid frames of the racing bikes in the early 1930s, leading to the swinging-fork rearsuspensions that became standard on motorcycles in the late 1950s.
THE EVOLUTION OF MOTORCROSS The first motorcycles, called Motorrad, came off the production line of the German engineers Hildebrand and Wolfmüller in 1894. In Britain, the first off-road motorcycle event, then called ‘scrambling,’ was run in 1924 at Camberly, Surry. ‘Scrambling’ races became very popular throughout Great Britain, with teams competing from Britain’s
motorcycle manufacturers: Rudge, Matchless, the A. J. Stevens Company (now known as AJS), Norton, and the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA). The motorcycles used in all these off-road races were little different from street models of the time. Competition for an edge in these races led to technical improvements in the motorcycles that were eventually incorporated in the models sold to the

In 1952, the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), which had become the international governing body for motorcycling, began a European Championship in motocross for cycles with 500 cc engines — a World Championship was begun in 1957. A separate World Championship for cycles with 250 cc engines was begun in 1962. Two-stroke engines became winners in this category, with light and agile models from motorcycle manufacturers Husqvarna in Sweden, Greeves in England, and CZ in the former Czechoslovakia. The two-stroke engine became the standard for motocross racing. Motocross came to the US in 1966 when Torsten Hallman, the Swedish champion, demonstrated the sport in an exhibition event in Simi Valley, California. In US events over the next dozen years, the European stars continued to win, with no American challengers.
Japanese motorcycle companies challenged the European makers for motocross race dominance in the late 1960s. In the 1970 World Championship, a Suzuki 250 cc model became the first non-European motorcycle to win first place in any World competition. In 1975, the World Championship for 125 cc models was begun, and was also dominated by Japanese machines. The popularity of motocross exploded in the US in the 1970s. In 1972, the first American stadium motocross event was held in the Los Angeles Coliseum. American riders, though, did not begin winning in international motocross races until well into the 1980s. Before 1980, the standard motocross bike had a two-stroke, air-cooled engine and a twin-shock rear suspension. From 1980 on, water-cooled engines began to appear in motocross races, along with single-shock rear suspensions. By the year 2000, four-stroke engines had become the new thing in motocross racing, introduced by European cycle builders like KTM, Husqvarna and Husaberg. This advance led to odd combinations of cycles racing in the same category, such categories defined only by displacement, but now distorted by the increased four-
Several offshoots from motocross racing have become popular, moving motocross from the original concept of backcountry scrambling to indoor stadiums — these are events like Supercross, Arenacross and Supermoto, where motocross bikes race on both pavement and dirt over beams, jumps and obstacles. Other vehicles have begun racing on motocross tracks, including four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles in ATV/Quad Motocross and mini-bikes in Mini-Motocross. Freestyle Motocross (FMX) is a stadium event that has no racing at all — winners are picked by the quality of their acrobatic stunts with a motocross bike while riding
over obstacles and jumps. Finally, some people have taken the sport back to its roots, with Vintage Motocross, where riders race on motorcross bikes that predate 1975.
