the ‘veil’ of a ‘dramedy’ with plenty of lessons for us all’ .” Grade: C+ Joseph: “‘Darling Companion’ would have been a much better movie had its focus remained with its canine star who runs away from home as opposed to the humans who go looking for him. Granted, the new dramedy that Lawrence Kasdan directed from a screenplay he had written with his wife Meg is not a total loss. After all, it is always interesting to watch people develop, define and re-define their relationships with one another – especially when said people are played by talented actors. However, there is very little real substance to this shaggy dog story.” Grade: D

viewer’s sympathy. The new romantic drama from writer/director Terence Davies is quite the affected affair. Nothing about the movie, which is based on Terence Rattigan’s play, feels even remotely relevant to the current day and age. Instead, it comes across as somewhat of a melodrama, moving along at a snail’s pace with performances that have not been adjusted properly for the jump from stage to screen.” Grade: F

‘Darling Companion’ On the side of a busy freeway, a woman (Diane Keaton) finds the love, devotion, commitment and courage she needs – all wrapped up in a bloodied stray dog. When the beloved canine goes missing, a search adventure plays out, drawing together friends and family and rekindling a lifelong love. (PG-13 – 103 minutes) Stan: “A long time admirer of Diane Keaton’s work throughout the years since ‘Annie Hall’ and with the old saying coming to mind of ‘She can do no wrong’, this story on long time relationships, blossoming new ones, and that all too crucial period of adjustment, supersedes the core element of the story relative to ‘man’s best friend’ as we’re presented a reflective view of the basic human elements of interpersonal companionship nicely cloaked under

‘The Pirates! Band of Misfits’ A pirate captain (Hugh Grant) sets out on a mission to defeat his rivals for the Pirate of the Year Award. The quest takes the captain and his crew from the shores of Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Entertainment which ranks in the Pixar category for intuitive stories, this latest from filmmaker Peter Lord is delightfully charming.” Grade: C+ Randy: “Much like Pixar, Ardman Entertainment never fails to entertain with its animated offerings. While Pixar movies are technologically advanced, Ardman shows more skill and talent delivers unmatched stopmotion animation that is not only time consuming to create, but takes an incredible level of detail. Make sure you watch closely for subtle humor in the background of each scene. ‘The Pirates!’ is a fast-paced, often hilarious romp through the high seas. Johnny Depp, eat your heart out.” Grade: AJoseph: “Audiences of ‘The Pirates! Band of Misfits’ are sure to suffer from the extremely serious affliction known as Information Overload Syndrome. The same could be said for the movie itself. Kat Coiro’s feature-length directorial debut is kind of cliché, weaving a story that will not likely win any awards for originality. However, thanks to its charismatic cast and a screenplay, which Coiro co-wrote with star Krysten Ritter, that is as surprisingly sincere as it is refreshingly funny, the new comedy comes across as a largely likeable piece of entertainment.” Grade: B

Filmmaker Kat Coiro (‘L!fe Happens’) By Joseph J. Airdo “Krysten (Ritter) and I are old friends. We had always kicked around this idea of writing a female buddy comedy kind of in the vein of ‘Swingers,’ where the girls get to be bad. Then I had a baby and we decided that the perfect formula for something like this was girls who were not ready for that responsibility and the story was born. There is a scene in the movie where the girls pull up next to some cute guys and invite them to a party. Then

is a story that lives on its own. When I go back and look at it, I cannot tell what Krysten wrote, what I wrote or what came from real life. It really becomes its own story. “I learned that I feel very confident on a set. I had done a lot of shorts but nothing long-term. We shot for 17 days and I remember jumping into it and asking myself, ‘How am I going to pull this off?’ I did not know if I could do it but it went really smoothly. We made the movie for $600,000 and now it is opening in theaters across the country. I can confidently say that I know how to operate a set. And that is exciting.” – Kat Coiro

Director Peter Lord (‘The Pirates! Band of Misfits’) By Joseph J. Airdo “[Stop-motion animation] is what I have done for a very long time. I have done it all of my adult life. We are very good at it at my studio. There are about 350 people who really specialize in this at Aardman Animations. They do it really well and they love doing it. This is going to sound ridiculous, but my studio is so much more fun than anyone else’s studio.

they see the baby and they squeal away. That scene actually happened to me in real life. As a mother who wrote this script when my daughter was just 3 months old, I can say that a lot of the little details about being a harried and frazzled young mom are definitely very accurate. Like, when she is changing the baby in the trunk of the car; I definitely did that a few times.

“I went to Pixar yesterday. They are great. I am a huge fan of Pixar. It is an amazing culture down there. They have such a beautiful campus with crazy guys on scooters zooming around. It is fun. But it has to be fun because otherwise all they are doing is sitting at the keyboard all day – which is really boring. In our world, people do not sit at keyboards. They are working with their hands.

“Although at the end of the day, what I enjoy about the movie when I see it is that it is not really based on our lives. It is based on little moments, details and experiences but it really

love. I like that. It is not perfect but I do not think that perfect is necessarily a good thing. I think that lively is always better than perfect. And I believe that some of that handmade-ness comes out of the screen and the audience feels it, too. At least I hope they do. Otherwise, we are wasting our time. “There is a scene in the tavern when the Pirate Captain says, ‘Oh, go on, laugh. Everybody laugh.’ And everybody laughs. Then you have got 25 puppets all rolling around, each one doing something different. Some are clutching their sides, some are slapping the table and some are leaning against the wall. And it was all handled by one guy. That shot that lasted 3 seconds took more than 3 weeks to shoot. It is tough but you can do it if you have got the mental stamina.” – Peter Lord

“The film is set in the present. This was a shock and excited all of us who read it. It meant it was not going to be a documentary attempt to trawl through Thatcher’s life but a film about something universal – power, loss, identity. Many of Thatcher’s colleagues described events in her life as having a Shakespearean dimension and that her downfall had elements of Greek tragedy. I saw her in a line of massive female political figures from the UK – Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots, two figures I had already directed pieces about in opera and theatre.” – Phyllida Lloyd

PROFESSIONAL BULL RIDERS INVADE PRESCOTT VALLEY! Bucky’s Casino Mile High PBR Touring Pro Division calls Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley home once again. 2012 is sure to bring a bigger and better event as they had to make it a two day event with all the action to take place which will be held on Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28. Tim’s Toyota Center welcomed some of the top ranked bulls and over 45 of the toughest bull riders from around the world to challenge one another

Kicking off this year’s two day event will be the young guns showing off their skills. New to the bull riding scene, the Miniature Bull Riding (MBR) takes the Pro Division event and literally miniaturizes it! This event is full lights and smoke, highlighting the riders and their ranks; this is the first step for most of these youngsters toward making it to the big time. The JC Mortensen Invitational MBR will take place Friday, April 27 at Tim’s Toyota Center; this is an event you don’t want to miss. The big show with the big boys will be sure to keep you on the edge of your seats, with Bucky’s Casino as the event title sponsor again this year; the tone is set for a prestige event. To bring the PBR Touring Pro Division to

our town is nothing less than a privilege. The hard work and dedication of the riders, bulls and the organization as a whole exemplifies what they are about. As the title sponsor, Bucky’s and Yavapai Casinos has added a special bonus. Bring in your PBR ticket after the event to Bucky’s or Yavapai casinos and receive $20 in Free Play when you join the Gold Rush Club. Bucky’s Casino is where you can enjoy a full range of games, from live table games to hundreds of the latest slots. You’ll also find without a doubt the best Blackjack games in Northern Arizona. Visit their non-smoking Poker Room and try your hand at Texas Hold ’Em in live games or tournament action! If you’re planning to spend more than just a day watching the Bull Riding then visit the Prescott area – First call 1-800-967-4637 and book your gaming getaway at the Prescott Resort featuring the best views in Prescott. Venture out to golf one of

the beautiful golf courses or to one of the nearby lakes for boating, fishing and hiking – Also it’s just a short drive to the famous ghost town of Jerome, or to Sedona - famous for its vortex sites, artists, restaurants and the Red Rock Scenic Byway - and we have yet to mention world famous “Whiskey Row” in downtown Prescott where you’ll find The Palace, Arizona’s oldest restaurant and bar. All this and we have only scratched the surface of all fun places you can enjoy in the Prescott area. Get your tickets to the 2012 Bucky’s Casino Mile High PBR at Tim’s Toyota Center on April 27th and 28th. Tickets start at just $10! With the purchase of any PBR ticket you get $5 off of any MBR ticket! Coffee drinks include iced and drip coffee bar offerings, lattes, cappuccinos, and espressos. A full bar shakes up drinks like Mint Lemon Drop Martinis, Pineapple Rum Mojitos and the Shea Breeze made of muddled pineapple, vodka, cranberry, soda and fresh lime. If cocktails aren’t your preference, choose from almost 2o wines 10 craft beers. While I’m a girl that enjoys a drink on occasion, it was the food that really impressed. Breakfast offers items like Warm Nutella and fresh bananas on toast ($3.50) and New Mexico Burritos made with egg, bacon, potato, cheese, avocado and homemade green salsa ($4.50). Lunch consists excellent fresh sandwiches with chips like the OMG made with prosciutto, mascarpone and fig or Juicy Roast Beef served with melted muenster, creamy horseradish and tomato ($7.25). Salads are also available in combinations like a Classic Chop ($7.50) or Caprese ($6.50). Dinner includes additional options like the choice of 8 delicious Bruschetta ($10.95), and the entrée of the moment. Have you ever wanted to be part of the natural process of growing wine? Well here’s your chance to see what it’s like at the very beginning of the game. Yavapai College is expanding its vineyard in the Verde Valley and they are looking for volunteers to help plant an additional three acres of vines. Did you know that Yavapai College has Arizona’s only accredited viticulture program? They are building a new “Southwest Wine Center” that is intended to be not only the center of viticulture education for Arizona, but for the entire Southwest

United States. They will have a full blown vineyard, winery and tasting room and eventually the goal is to be self-funded from wine sales. On May 5th, get your hands dirty and celebrate the birth of a vineyard! Join the Arizona Vines & Wines team – we’ll be planting at 9AM (a short training is required at 8:30AM). Email us to join our team at publisher@ arizonavinesandwines.com. Other times are also available… sign up directly with Yavapai College by calling Linda Clark at (928) 634-6572. Come be a part of history!

Over 4,000 “palate picked” wine selections from around the world. Hundreds of craft beer, mead and sake choices and still growing! Inside the store, we have an always expanding wine and beer bar where we feature wine tastings every Thursday from 6-8pm. We are approaching our 20th anniversary, and we’re just getting started! Also follow “The fermented Fiend” (@1fermentedfiend on twitter and /thefermentedfiend on Facebook) to keep up with inside news, exclusive sales and tastings, and real time reviews as we taste with winemakers, brewers and representatives!

BEER! SUMMER BEERS As the first of the 100 degree days hit us this past weekend, it became clear that it was time to start discussing some great hot weather beer. So let’s do that. We can look at this in two different ways. First we can look at beers brewed for the summer months…seasonally produced and rotating out sometime in August. We also will look at some great year round beers…ones which we can always drink, but really shine when the mercury climbs. Almost everybody makes at least one seasonal now, and summer sees the vast majority of them. What makes the typical summer seasonal? Usually they are light and easy to drink, possessing a refreshing, thirst quenching property. They are perfect for sitting down after some strenuous outdoor work, like walking from the car to the house. One of the long time favorites is

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” Anderson Valley Summer Solstice. This beer, which Anderson Valley terms a CervezaCrema in deference to the Hispanic farm workers in the Boonville area who were among the first to embrace this beer, is richer than many summer beers with a finishing hint of vanilla that makes you want more. As a contrast to a long time favorite from Anderson Valley, Great Divide has only recently geared up their seasonal program, but what a great job they did. Look for Nomad Bohemian Pilsner on the shelves right now, soon to be followed by Collette Farmhouse Ale. Both beers will make your day just a little cooler, but the Collette is a great example of the saison style which is becoming increasingly popular among American brewers. How about an old beer that is new again? Left Hand used to release JuJu Ginger year round, but decided to pull back, reformulate and make it a seasonal release. The newly renamed Good JuJu is a nice lighter beer with a hint of ginger that provides some unique

flavors. It is a great complement to sushi and salads. Ska Brewing is back with their Mexican Logger, a clean, crisp beer that evokes thoughts of sitting on the beach in Mexico with one of their local favorites in hand. Definitely a beer to tuck into your cooler for something a little different on Cinco de Mayo…and the fact that it comes in cans means you can take it anywhere. Breckenridge Summer Bright will also be available in cans, as well as the typical bottle package.

This is a real easy drinking filtered wheat beer with a hint of both lemon and lime. Abita is another brewery that rolls from one beer to the next during the hot weather in Phoenix. Get started now with Abita Red, and then wait for Abita Wheat to hit in another month or so. Big Sky also has their Summer Honey in the market this year, and it is always a favorite…the touch of honey makes it a wonderful hot weather beer. The Surprise Hit at The Scottsdale Beer Fest Was… NOT A BEER! by “King” James Swann

Hello again beer craft beer lovers. Today let’s chat about the Hit of the Show at the Scottsdale Culinary Southwest Festival of Beers. Wouldn’t you know it; it wasn’t a beer at all! My friends, I give you my pick of the litter, The cream of the crop, The best in show, The one and only…MR. P’s BBQ Sandwich from San Tan Brewing Co. Let’s begin by saying that this sandwich has a firm base in local beer culture. It is after all made with Mr. Pineapple Wheat Ale. Let us not forget that San Tan won a Great American Beer Festival medal last year for this very brew. So, why not turn it into a sandwich? The results are stellar! Beginning with San Tan Chef Denis Martinez slow cooked smoked sea salt pork; they pile it high and add his signatureNorth Carolina style Mr. Pineapple Habanero BBQ sauce on one side with mayo and pickle chips on the other between a freshly baked bun. Talk about Delish! Tell me more you say? Indeed I shall. Pair it with a cold Mr. Pineapple wheat brew and Heaven Awaits. While I can’t promise you 13 virgins as you arrive at the gates of gastronomic paradise, just know that this is a must have combination of food and beer that holds true to Brew Master Anthony Cannechia’s promise that beer is the new wine. Bravo sir, bravo. Now the big surprise. You too can try this culinary combination almost every week at San Tan Brewing Co. as their Saturday lunch special. Isn’t local craft beer life grand?

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

As always, keep sending those comments & questions to kingjamesswann@gmail. com and don’t forget, go local or go home! PS. We were due to begin our foray in local home brewers this week but due to scheduling conflicts we shall begin next week. Until then, Cheers!hearing them! As promised, next week we shall begin our foray into the local home brew scene. We have many talented home brewers in the area and it’s now time to show them some love! Until Next week, Cheers! The Bruery TradewindsTripel (see if you can figure out the “extra” ingredients), SanTan Mr. Pineapple Wheat (this GABF medal winning beer is draft only…this year), Bridgeport Summer Squeeze, Pyramid Curve Ball Kolsch, Alaskan Summer and New Belgium Somersault. Other favorites are Leinenkugel Summer Shandy and Blue Moon Summer Honey Wheat, a wheat ale with honey for sweetness and a little orange peel to balance it out with some citrus flavor. While we are talking about Blue Moon, expect to see a couple of other interesting beers hit the market this year. First off is Vintage Blonde Ale from the Reserve Collection. A gold medal winner at the GABF, this beer uses some Chardonnay grapes, weighs April 26th, 2012 - May 2nd, 2012

in at 8.5% and shows up in 750 ML bottles. The other treat from Blue Moon this year is Farmhouse Red Ale. Farmhouse Red brings the Blue Moon treatment to a couple of styles that are becoming very popular in the United States, saisons and sours. This beer combines the saison style with the Flemish Red to produce an easy drinking beer with just a little bit of sourness at the finish. It may not satisfy the big time sour beer drinker, but it hits the mark and will serve as a great opportunity to introduce mainstream drinkers to some new styles. Phoenix is a test market for this beer so it will be limited. Now, let’s look at year round beers that are particularly good in the hot Continued on Page 34...

weather. First off is Bell’s Oberon, kind of a hybrid since it is a year round beer in Arizona, but a summer seasonal in most of the rest of the distribution area. Regardless, it combines wheat beer goodness with the spiciness of Saaz hops for a refreshing drinking experience. Lost Coast Brewing has both Tangerine Wheat and Great White to give you year round enjoyment. Both beers are wheat based, but Great White uses a little kaffir lime and coriander, while Tangerine Wheat, uses…I’ll let you figure it out. Ciders are always wonderful so whether you are enjoying Crispin, Fox Barrel or Wyder’s you can’t go wrong there. Pilsner beers always go great with hot weather and Scrimshaw from North Coast may be one of the best American brewed pilsners out there. Grand Canyon also makes a very nice pilsner and Mama’s Little YellaPils from Oskar Blues will also get the job done.

34

Staying with the year round theme, how about a Ballast Point Pale Ale? April 26th, 2012 - May 2nd, 2012

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

A German Kolsch style, not a true pale ale, this beer brings plenty of enjoyment to your table. Sonoran’s White Chocolate Ale will cool you down while giving you your chocolate dose for the day. Stiegl, an outstanding Austrian brewery, will be introducing a new version of their Radler, this one with grapefruit to pair with their already popular traditional lemon Radler. If German beers are more your thing, both the Pilsner and Weizen from Krombacher should work for you. The Krombacher Pilsner is the best-selling Pilsner in Germany, so you know it has something going for it. Of course you also have SanTan Hefeweizen, College Street Wheat and Sun Up Light Rail Cream Ale to keep you cool.

“Where’s Barney?” The new Barneys Boathouse is a lot of fun and much more updated than the previous location. They do daily specials here which are: “Shipwrecked Monday”, which is all you can eat tacos and wings for $10, Tuesdays are ladies nights, on Fridays for $14 it is all you can eat fish Friday! There are other daily specials throughout the week as well. They just got the award for best Scottsdale dish for their alligator! It is delicious! They have an option to “pick 4” and it’s from the appetizers, I suggest getting the gator as one of them. EVERYDAY 5pm-7pm the Barney brew is only .50 cents and all day on Thursdays! They have three stories, more TV’s you could count, and one of the bars is on the roof. This is one of my favorite places in Scottsdale right now. 7341 E. 6th Ave. Scottsdale, AZ 85251

“You never say no to chocolate” White Chocolate Grill has a happy hour that is daily starting at 2pm with menu items that include half rack of BBQ ribs, AZ egg rolls; which are chicken wraps with a jalapeno sauce, a plate of sliders and some other options as well. They have a list of their specialty martinis as well, the one that I happened to like was the Vitamin C martini, but I have been known to love some orange juice and vodka… so we all saw that one coming. Like beer? They offer 20oz drafts for only $4 and $6 for red or white wine by the glass. They also have a date night that is $30 a person and you get an appetizer, entrees, and dessert! 7000 East Mayo Blvd. Phoenix, AZ 85054

You’re warily walking down a dark, dirty, cobblestone alleyway in a once striking, but now war-torn city somewhere in Eastern Europe. You aren’t really sure why you’re putting your life in danger for some club, but the kid at the hostel was very persuasive in telling you that the experience would change your life and perspective on what pure adrenaline feels like. So you continue down this forgotten walkway until suddenly you feel vibrations soaking through your heels and pulsating up your legs. There’s definitely a rhythmic beat seeping through the cracks of these ancient walls, pulling you in closer to your destination. There. A single, Armani-suited bouncer guarding a heavy wooden door nods in recognition of your party outfit and ushers you in. And then the lasers and lights cut through your reality and the room explodes in awesome sound and sinful dancing. Such a depiction is familiar in your psyche because you’ve seen it in the movies. Russian house music exists and your curiosity can finally be satisfied this Thursday at a-not-so-Eastern-European venue in S-town. Smashboxx presents

Now that the chill of our desert’s winter has completely dissipated, people are starting to feel sexy again in their fancy, barely-there cocktail attire. The weather outside is warm and the people of Scottsdale are hot and ready to show off their skin and cash at one of the most expensive car dealerships in the valley. What pops into your brain when you think Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, and MmmMmmMaserati? Wealth. Power. Sex. Everything you’ve pretty much always wanted in life and embodied in a vehicle that has the power to drive your dreams into some gorgeous abyss in the sky. It’s unfortunate not everyone can own such luxuries. Instead, we must rely on the vain within our society who can play with their monies like that. Whether you can purchase one for yourself or not, one thing’s for sure, laying your eyes on such a car is definitely a sight to behold and admire. Mix cars like that with beautiful people, bumpin’ music, and tasty beverages and you’ve got yourself one lavish soiree that everyone is invited to. Luxor Auto Group is celebrating 20 years of adding jaw-dropping vehicular wonderment to the roads of Arizona at their Scottsdale location this Saturday. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Scottsdale so don’t feel so bad for paying a $25 cover fee. Cover includes complimentary food and drinks along with access to the entertainment. DJ Soulman, DJ Mikyl, and live band, Notes from Neptune will perform as a fashion show provided by Scottsdale Fashion Week adds more to the already enticing spectacle. Oh, and they’re raffling off a $70,000 Maserati but apparently the winner can only drive it home if they make a hole-in-one on the Luxor Group’s putting green so you better make a trip to Golfland before the week is up! Afterwards join the beautiful at the W Hotel for the official after party.

NOW THAT’S FAST!!

Kitesurfing Speed Demons Break Velocity Record Sebastien Cattelan of France broke the kitesurfing world speed record, and the magic 50kts barrier, by achieving a velocity of 50.26 knots (93kph) at the Lüderitz Speed Challenge in Namibia last month. Cattelan was well placed to break the previous record of 49.84 kts, set by Robert Douglas of the USA, as he was one of the founders of speed kitesurfing and actually helped establish the speed strip at Lüderitz. Such speeds can be achieved at this unique location due to strong area winds being funneled and accelerated down a shallow valley onto the lagoon’s smooth stretch of water.

April 26th, 2012 - May 2nd, 2012 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Cattlean’s celebrations were however somewhat short-lived as his record was beaten a day later by fellow countryman Alexandre Caizergues, who reached a top speed of 50.57 knots (93.65kph). The WSSRC is yet to ratify these new records as official sailing records due to the fact that there is some contention over the total speed of the kite and kitesurfer over the 500m distance. It is possible for the kitesurfer to pick up speed as he or she tracks the board away from the kite and so the kitesurfer can temporarily reach speeds higher than that of the kite. It is an issue that has caused problems previously but we will wait to hear the outcome from the WSSRC. Either way, it’s fast. Very, very fast.

Bloodforge

XBLA/1,200 Microsoft Points/Available Now Crom, a fierce and brutal warrior, has seen his fair share of death and battle. When he chooses to leave this violent life for family and peace, the gods answer back by killing everyone he cares for. Now, with the single thought of revenge filling his enraged mind, Crom ventures down a path filled with frantic destruction where not even the gods themselves are safe. “Bloodforge” is a third-person action game that places you in the bloodsoaked armor of Crom as you make your way across the ancient world, killing everything in your sight. Gameplay is fairly genre-standard, keeping the action moving through button pounding and nimble dodging. While most games would sanitize the death-dealing to a degree, “Bloodforge” has you dispatching a variety of demonic soldiers and crazed worshippers in a gore-filled bloodbath seldom seen in the Xbox Live Arcade universe. These execution-style attacks are performed by using detailed combat combos and Rune Attacks, which ultimately result in vicious finishing moves.
