7 FINGERS: PSY

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts May 18th-19th 2012 Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present the ultra-cool, cutting-edge Montreal-based circus 7 Fingers on Friday and Saturday, May 18–19, in the Virginia G. Piper Theater. Following the success of its aweinspiring hit performance Traces, 7 Fingers moves into the surreal underworld of the human mind in its latest production, PSY. The company’s extraordinary acrobats and dancers take audiences on a humorous and dream-like journey through the human mind while showcasing breathtaking acrobatics, aerial stunts, juggling and more. Their daring juxtaposition of dark and

complex themes with the joyful and celebratory language of the circus arts makes for a rich artistic experience. Known as “Les 7 doigts de la main” in their hometown of Montreal, 7 Fingers was founded in 2002 with a mission to bring circus to a human scale. The company’s unique name is a twist on the French expression “the five fingers of the hand,” which describes distinct parts united and moving in coordination towards one common goal. In much the same way, the seven founding directors of the company combined their distinct talents and experiences to work towards their shared artistic aims. Tickets are available for $39 and $49 online at www. ScottsdalePerformingArts.org or through the Patron Services Box Office at (480) 499-TKTS (8587).

‘The Avengers’* When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury (Samuel L. ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ A group of British retirees decide to “outsource” their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past. (PG-13 – 124 minutes)

Randy: “Audiences and critics alike could not ask for a more magnificent cast. Nor could we ask for a better film. Every minute of this likable comedy is enjoyable. The entire cast is delightful, but Maggie Smith and Judi Dench steal the show. The sights and scenery are exotic and are perfectly captured for the screen. The story proves that we are only as old as we think we are. Whether young, or young at heart; joy can be found where you least expect it.” Grade: A+ Joseph: “Some movies can only be appreciated by one specific demographic. ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ is one of them. That demographic for this particular ensemble dramedy is the 65-plus age group, in which viewers do not mind when a motion picture is predictable and only offers insights that are barely even skin-deep. In fact, those viewers prefer their entertainment to be that way. However, for the rest of us, checking into this British import for even a brief visit would be a waste of our time.” Grade: D

‘A Little Bit of Heaven’ A young woman (Kate Hudson), who is afraid of opening herself up to true love and commitment, uses

reviewer, who have been down the road of ‘one’s life is about to end’, ‘A Little Bit of Heaven’clouds the view of the middle ground that is the true challenge of the will to discover that inner peace within us for the acceptance of the inevitable.” Grade: C Joseph: “‘A Little Bit of Heaven’ walks the extremely thin line between sadness and jubilance exceptionally well. Moreover, neither emotion ever feels forced or feigned. Instead, the new romantic dramedy is a genuinely sweet movie – or a sweetly genuine one, even. It allows the viewer to feel the full extent of the heartbreak associated with a tremendously tragic topic while wrapping its arms around them with the intention of comfort. Ultimately, said viewer feels uplifted.” Grade: B

‘More Than Frybread’ Twenty-two Arizona tribal representatives convene in Flagstaff to compete for the first everannual State of Arizona frybread championship. (NR – 96 minutes) Joseph: “If Christopher Guest were Native American, ‘More Than Frybread’ is exactly the movie he would make. Much like many of Guest’s projects, writer/ director Travis Holt Hamilton’s new mockumentary gives a good tap to your funny bone. The key to the comedy is the quirkiness of its characters, each of whom is – for better or for worse – likely to feel familiar to the viewer. Therefore, it is just unfortunate that Hamilton’s ending literally leaps off of the deepend, leaving a bad taste in one’s mouth.” Grade: C

‘My Way’ Rival runners in World War II-era Korea – one Korean (Jang Dong-gun) and one Japanese (Joe Odagiri) – go to war together against the Soviets. (R – 142 minutes) Stan: “Director/cowriterKangJekyu,who demonstrates the prime directive for all of us filmmakers

of making every production dollar look like two on the screen, with a stunning visual presentation takes us through the massiveness of a world warwhere every continent had a country involved, and singularly draws us into the lives of two culturally diverse young men who find common ground in their fight against a world threat.” Grade: B Joseph: “At $25 million, ‘My Way’ is supposedly the most expensive Korean film ever made. Had director KangJe-kyu – who also co-wrote the World War II drama’s screenplay – not been so preoccupied with showing the benefits of every single penny, the movie may have been a worthwhile watch. Unfortunately, that preoccupation causes the film to eventually become fueled by action rather than plot – which is never a good thing when your runtime pushes 2 and a half hours.” Grade: D

Filmmaker Philip Lyall (‘65_RedRoses’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I went to university with [Eva Markvoort]. She was a friend of mine. We actually lived in the same residence building and we were studying theater together. I decided to switch majors and go into film studies and film production and I switched schools during my graduating year. That was when Eva was falling ill. I knew that she had Cystic Fibrosis but I did not realize the severity of the disease. “I came to see Eva in the hospital and she told me that she was getting a double lung transplant. I did not even know that double lung transplants existed. It was in that moment that I thought that this could be a really interesting journey to see a beautiful young woman – who was so full of life – waiting for a second chance at that life. That is how this project got started. “I learned not to take life for granted. I am healthy so I could possibly live a nice, long life. But, for Eva, it was already cut short. She always knew that she was never going to live a long life so she lived every day on a ridiculously different level. Samuel L. That was humbling. Life is short so you really have to get out there and do things that matter and make connections with people. Fall in love. Do not be scared. Face fear straight on. Eva was fearless. She could do anything – and she did it with such grace and class.” – Philip Lyall Editor’s note: “65_RedRoses,” a feature-length documentary about a young woman with a potentially fatal disease who finds a supportive community online as she awaits a transplant that could save her life, premieres 9 p.m. Thursday, May 3 on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, Cox Communications’ channel 100 and Dish Network’s channel 189.

Comic book creator Stan Lee (‘With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I have a theory. When you were a kid – very young – you probably read fairy tales and you probably loved them. Tales about giants and ogres and witches and goblins and all kinds of things like that. Now, you get a little bit older and you cannot read fairy tales anymore. You are too old for them. But I do not think that you ever outgrow your love for those kinds of stories about people who are larger than life with powers that

So, along comes superhero stories. To me, those are fairy tales for grownups. I think that one reason they are so popular is because they give you a chance to recapture that great feeling you had when you were a kid reading fairy tales. That is a little bit of Stan Lee philosophy there. The only advice I could ever give anybody is when you make a choice as to what you are going to do in life, try to choose something that you really enjoy doing. If you are working at something you enjoy, then you do not feel like you are working. It is like you are playing. I do not feel that I have ever worked. I love what I do so much. It is like when other people go out to the golf course and play golf with their friends. Well, when I am working, it is like I am playing golf with my friends. We are doing what we like to do and it is fun. If I was working at something I did not like, then it would feel like work.” – Stan Lee Editor’s note: “With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story,” a feature-length documentary on the life and creations of Lee – including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men – is now playing exclusively on EPIX, Cox Communications’ channel 310 and Dish Network’s channel 380.

‘The Wicker Tree’

Cabin in the Woods

By Joseph J. Airdo In “The Wicker Tree,” a pair of young missionaries are charmed by the residents of Tressock, Scotland and accept an invitation to participate in a local festival – fully unaware of the consequences of their decision. “[Actor] Christopher Lee called ‘The Wicker Man’ comic, erotic, romantic and horrific enough to melt the bowels of a bronze statue. It used music and comedy and a bit of romance all in order to lull people into a certain mood and then hit them with the horror at the end. It is amazing that [the makers of the film’s 2006 remake] could have misread the whole thing to that degree. There was a certain amount of schadenfreude in watching that. But the genre was something that I wanted to repeat so I was glad to have another go at it and hopefully prove that it worked. And I think that it did.” – Robin Hardy

“Mildred Pierce” (TV, 2011): Joan Crawford made the role iconic, but Winslet gives complete freshness to the part of the self-sacrificing mother. “Revolutionary Road” (2008): In Winslet’s reunion with her “Titanic” leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio, it’s to both stars’ credit that they’re equally effective together. “The Holiday” (2006): The movie may seem lightweight, but Winslet ideally captures her character’s heartbreak and renewal of hope. “Sense and Sensibility” (1995): The Jane Austen classic about sisters and their romances furnished Winslet with a great role.

Cinco de Mayo celebration to include cooking classes, dance performances, fundraisers, giveaways, games and a salsa challenge! The onset of spring is said to bring April showers and May flowers. That might not always hold true in Arizona but one thing that is for certain is that the celebration of Hispanic culture, tradition, food and fun comes into full bloom on Cinco de Mayo. This year, El Palacio Restaurant & Cantina of Chandler plans to celebrate this festive holiday with Seis Días de Fiesta or six days of celebration. From May 1-6 patrons will enjoy a variety of interactive ways to learn, eat, play, participate and give back to the community. Kicking off the Fiesta on May 1 is Tamale Tuesday—El Palacio will offer an assortment of fresh pork, chicken and beef tamales as well as coconut dessert tamales to satisfy your sweet tooth. Tuesday continues when Anthony Serrano, owner of El Palacio of Chandler, and a highly accomplished culinary genius in his own right, will lead tamale making classes from 5-7 p.m. Classes will run in 30 minute sessions and are free for all to enjoy. Tips, tricks and every ingredient necessary to construct these corn husk filled delights will be provided. On Wednesday, El Palacio will show their support for Chicanos por la Causa by donating a percentage of sales to benefit community programs supporting education, economic development, social services and housing. Chicanos por la Causa is a local non-profit organization that has made a difference in the lives of thousands of valley residents. Also, Wednesday is Family Day—kids eat free all day and there will be a variety

of fun activities and games from 5-7 p.m.

AUTHENITIC THAI CUSINE

Following in the momentum of community support, Thursday’s festivities will include a fundraiser to benefit the Ballet Folklorico Quetzallia—a dynamic dance group dedicated to the awareness and education of Mexican culture through folkloric dance. A percentage of the sales from 5-9 p.m. will benefit the dance group. As an added bonus, the dancers will perform live for patrons to enjoy. In addition, Thursday is Ladies Night and that means girls night out on a budget with buy one get one free select appetizers and salads paired with $2 margaritas and $3 sangrias. On Friday, the Fiesta continues with a Piñata Party! Three piñatas packed to the brim with prizes and gift cards from local businesses will bring out the kid in everyone as patrons line up at 2, 5 and 7 p.m. to take a crack at the paper mache jackpots. Saturday is Cinco de Mayo and that means serious Fiesta time with drink specials and giveaways all day long!

I particularly like the shredded lettuce instead of one giant leaf that slides around and often gets picked off anyhow. Liberty’s burger is served with chips and instead of being slathered in special sauce is served with a condiment plate containing a spicy aioli, pineapple salsa and ketchup to be added as you wish. www.LibertyMarket.com In Phoenix, The Grind (3961 East Camelback Road Phoenix, 602-9547463) is an Arcadia neighborhood staple. Great bread, great burger, great sweet potato fries…but what makes this burger so special is the coal fired ovens and homemade condiments. Even the ketchup is from-scratch. The time and care that is put into every plate is the kind you can only find in locally owned restaurants. www.TheGrindAz.com And then there’s Pita Jungle’s (locations Valley-wide) Mediterranean burger…not even on the site menu yet and I believe our server said the first meat burger ever on the menu. Cat Cora – Iron Chef, TV star, restaurateur, cookbook author, cookware designer, ardent humanitarian and mom of four boys – has just spent a long day putting finishing touches on her new Bravo series “Around the World in 80 Plates” – which premieres Wednesday, May 9 – and apologizes for being weary for this interview. It’s hard to imagine how she wouldn’t be. But it’s that ability to multitask with panache – and appreciate the skill in others – that makes Cora the perfect cohost (with Curtis Stone of “Top Chef Masters”) of “80 Plates,” in which the duo leads a dozen adventurous chefs on a cooking competition that spans five continents and 10 countries in just 40 days. “To be able to find chefs that could handle all of those things – being able to cook and travel together, to be dropped into a country and acclimate so quickly to a culture and a brand-new cuisine, to be able to find their way around – all of those things make up the excitement and thrill of the show,” Cora says. “It was just so fascinating to watch.”

Cinco de Mayo If it is the first issue in May that must mean it’s time to talk about May 5th….or Cinco de Mayo for you lovers of the Battle of Puebla. We are all clear that Cinco de Mayo is not the Mexican Independence Day, aren’t we? Okay, great. That day is celebrated on September 16th and commemorates the call for separation from Spanish Rule. Cinco de Mayo is more of a regional event commemorating the Mexican army’s upset victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 15, 1862. The holiday is fairly minor in most of Mexico, with the obvious exception of Puebla. It isn’t even considered an obligatory federal holiday, just a voluntary one. So, how did Cinco (we are on a first name basis) become such a big deal in the USA? For whatever reason, the Mexican community in California celebrated the victory starting in 1863 and the observance has pretty much been continuous ever since. Like many trends, Cinco celebrations spread from California to other states and developed in to a cultural celebration, much like St. Patrick’s Day, Chinese New Year and Oktoberfest have become in this country. Communities with larger Mexican populations embraced the day more than others. That certainly explains why Arizona puts so much energy in to the day. It does not, however, explain why Birmingham Alabama, which has a Mexican population so small it is included in the category “other ethnic groups”, makes such a big deal on May 5th. We’ve gone two paragraphs without once mentioning beer, well that’s about to change. Because Mexican beer has become such a big part of our culture, it’s only natural that these beers take center stage for Cinco. There are some domestic

Hello again craft beer lovers. For the month of May, let’s again switch gears and chat about HOME BREW and the people in Arizona that produce it. Over the next four weeks we shall cover four very unique home brewers living right here in the Grand Canyon state.

BEER! SECTION

Home Brew Is For Sharing by “King” James Swann

Andrew Baumann gets my nod for the most creative and prolific brewer in recent history. Beginning in March 2011, Andrew’s first brew was a Rogue IPA clone. That brew kit was the start of something beautiful. Since then Andrew has produced some of the wildest brews one might imagine including the Cake and a Card Porter. In case you were wondering he did indeed brew with a cake…wait for it…and a birthday card in the mash. Believe it or not, it was amazing. I doubt very much the card had any effect on the brew but the idea just strikes me as insane! Next up was a Grilled Lemon Cream Ale and if that weren’t enough The Night @ The Movies Pale Ale takes the cake. That too was strange brew made with popcorn! Now, I did mention that Andrew was quite the prolific brewer. In that I mean he will brew at his home brewery affectionately known as DAH BREW not once, but three times a day, two to three times a week. This guy has an addiction! He has already won four medals at Sanctioned BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) events and will one day I’m sure be a professional brewer that breaks boundaries in the same fashion Tomme Arthur.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

MOST IMPORTANTLY, when asked if there was anything he’d like to add to this article, he responded simply: Home Brew Is For Sharing. I can’t tell you how much I love this guy! Until next week, Cheers! May 3rd, 2012 - May 9th, 2012

beers produced in an effort to replicate Mexican styles, but why drink a pretender when you can have the real thing? There are two major Mexican brewing companies, Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma and Grupo Modelo. The latter, as you might suspect, are responsible for the two Modelo beers, Especial and Negra. The Especial is a tasty pale lager produced in the style of most Mexican beers. Negra Modelo is thought by most Americans to be the best of the beers from south of the border. It is a dark Vienna Lager style beer brewed in the German tradition. It has a little more body and flavor than most Mexican beers, so it brings a different drinking experience. Modelo also makes Pacifico and a small brand called Corona. Corona is a phenomenon unto itself. First produced in 1925, it has become the number one Mexican beer in the world. It is also one of the top ten selling beers of any kind. Available in bottles only because they feel that “the best taste experience and maximum enjoyment comes from the glass bottle”, they have foregone a draft product. And, this year for the first time you can enjoy Victoria as part of your celebration. Long kept as a Mexican secret, and the most popular beer in Mexico. This beer has hit the United States and is taking it by storm. No other import beer sold one million cases in the U.S. faster than Victoria, including the previous fastest seller, Victoria’s cousin Corona.

May 3rd, 2012 - May 9th, 2012

Moctezuma has the other well known Mexican beers, the most popular of which are the Dos Equis brands. The Special Lager is a Mexican style Pale Lager and Amber is a Vienna Lager, a little different than the Negra Modelo, but the same basic style. However the original beer from this brewery was Carta Blanca which was taken from the French, “Carte Blanche”, meaning blank check. Other beers from this brewery include Sol, Tecate and Bohemia. Bohemia is a European style pilsner brewed in the Czech tradition. Tecate is sometimes credited with starting the habit of putting a lime in Mexican beers. It seems they had a brewmaster of Scottish descent and adopted the tradition from Great

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Britain of providing sailors a lime with their daily beer ration to help prevent scurvy. And, we would be remiss if we didn’t remind you that Dos Equis does employ The Most Interesting Man in the World. Stay thirsty, my friends! Where do you find all these beers on Cinco? You don’t have to go far. Just about any Mexican restaurant is going to have something going on. You can check the Cinco section of this very publication for details. Much like St. Patrick’s Day, many of these events start as early as noon and will be in full stride as the work day ends. Get there early as there may be lines at many locations later in the evening. If you decide to stay home, pick up a couple of bottles of Corona Familiar. This beer is sold in a caguama (turtle) bottle, sometimes called a ballenas (whale), meaning a 33 ounce oddly shaped bottle which is a traditional bottle for home consumption in Mexico. Once you see them you will understand the names. Most of the time, this column is about craft beers, but Cinco is one of those holidays that demand a break from tradition. If you’re a craft beer drinker, just embrace the spirit for one day, and enjoy a Corona, Tecate or Victoria. Enjoy Cinco de Mayo, responsibly of course, and relax with some enjoyable Mexican beer. Don’t worry about what food you are pairing it with. Cinco is about friends and fun, and celebrating the Mexican culture. At least that’s my plan.

“No hippie ever hurt me” Baja Cove is one of my favorite places to go. They have a vibe that feels like the beach is gonna be right outside the door. I love that your most regular bartenders are the owners! Adrian and Rick are awesome and just want to have a good time! They have awesome specials all day and night. Baja offers dollar PBR, dollar jello shots, $3.50 margaritas, and my favorite, the rum runner! They have a $4.25 chicken wrap special that comes with chips and salsa. Beer pong is hosted on Thursdays, and karaoke on Friday nights! This weekend for Cinco de Mayo they will be having $3 mexican beers, great music and yours truly will be bartending there all day and night! Perfect place to be for this fiesta! Stop in and I will make you a delicious beverage for this hot weather. 414 S. Mill Ave. Tempe, AZ 85281

Show Details at www.clubredrocks.com Phoenix on Thursday, May 3rd at the Crescent Ballroom. Divine Providence has been widely endorsed by the press, with performances on Late Show with David Letterman and The Conan O’Brien Show. New York Times referred to frontman John McCauley as “growly, funny, slyly insightful,” and Relix agreed, “McCauley’s sense of musical inebriation has a deep cohesiveness and striking emotional weight.” SPIN called the album “revelatory,” while American Songwriter praised, “If this sounds like a rave, then you read it

correctly. Divine Providence, music that the Creator Himself may have sent, is the best, funniest, most detailed, thrilling blast of rock and roll since The Hold Steady’s Boys And Girls In America.” Visit www.crescentphx.com for more information.

THE HYPE IS OVER THE PICKS ARE IN...NOW THE REAL WORK BEGINS!

1ST ROUND DRAFT BREAKDOWN B Y S C OT T I E F OX

T

he NFL draft is finally over, and the choices have been finalized. Which players out of the first round candidates will make the biggest impact on the team during their 201213 rookie season? This year’s draft

VS

seemed to be packed full of potential talent. Could this be another epic year for the National Football League or will the prospects fall short? Let the analysis begin.

ARIZONA CARDINALS

MICHAEL FLOYD - WR

Although the Cards made a lot of seemingly solid choices, the team lost chemistry offensively when the tandem of Boldin and Fitzgerald was broken. Bringing in another legitimate threat will help to free up Fitz.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

ANDREW LUCK - QB

The prototype QB as expected was chosen by the Colts to replace one of the most prolific quarterbacks of all time. Aaron Rodgers quickly made Packers fans a believer. Can Andrew Luck do the same at Indy?

CLEVLAND BROWNS

TRENT RICHARDSON - RB

Being compared to the likes of Adrian Peterson, if he lives up to his reputation, Trent could be the spark to end Cleveland’s offensive woes. The Browns could use another Jim Brown style RB, well, that and some new uniforms.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS dbacks com/tickets

ROBERT GRIFFIN III - QB

You can’t mention the draft and not bring up RG3. Behind the legacy of Doug Williams, Griffin will have the most pressure from Super Bowl hungry fans, and naysayers alike. The Skins haven’t been to the dance since Mark Rypien.

The beautiful thing about St. Patrick’s day and Cinco de Mayo is that they are cultural events that everyone tends to partake in—Irish, Mexican, or whatever you’re ethnic background is, doesn’t seem to matter as much on these days. Everyone is invited to the party and no one wants to pass up the opportunity of having an excuse to drink all day. I’m pretty sure we, Americans, celebrate some battle fought long ago in Mexico more than they do south of the border. Arriba to that and cheers to tequila aplenty! I think it’s safe to assume that

If clubs could be people, Axis Radius would most def be a cougar. This mega discotheque has been around for a long time and has seen a variety of clubheads, celebrities, and ball players in its hay day. It was the spot to be at on the weekends for years and I personally spent many of my first legal drinking weekends there in the mid-2000s. But then the crowd began to change and more bars and clubs started opening up in Old Town. Suddenly Axis Radius wasn’t as hot as she used to be. She started getting old and people didn’t find her as attractive anymore. She survived, though, and now she’s back and more beautiful than ever. Ever since Republic Fridays became a reoccurring event, Axis Radius has been poppin’! The diversity in its crowd has returned, making it trendy once again. Thank God…it’s refreshing to have enough space to really get those dance moves going. Republic Fridays bring us more opportunities to enjoy premium dance music mixed by exceptional DJs at a venue that’s bigger than your living room. It’s almost Summer which means that when that cold, white mist shoots down from above on the dance floor, you won’t regret dancing hard to house music. When you can see nothing but a colorless blanket of a chilled mist, and hear nothing but a sick beat resonating through your being, nothing else matters but being there in that moment, dancing.

DJs, $3 beers, nachos, and tacos. In the evening, enjoy the MayweatherCHAPARRAL ROAD Cotto fight on Pay Per View and root for Cotto because he speaks Spanish. Saturday, May 5th. 12 pm – 9 pm. Fight begins at 6. 4363 N. 75th St, Scottsdale. Free.

ZOOM ZOOM! The Extreme Ways that Extreme Sports are Captured and Recorded You’ve seen the videos of extreme sporting events, complete with close-ups and aerial shots. Sports enthusiasts jumping out of airplanes and helicopters, kayaking through whitewater rapids and over waterfalls, and doing crazy stunts on motorcycles are all fodder for our entertainment. But have you ever wondered how those videos come to exist? Is a cameraman skiing down a hill backwards to capture footage of a snowboarder doing tricks? And what about the shots where the camera appears to be following a surfer out of a tight barrel? Is someone doing double duty by riding the wave while holding a camera (which would not only be impressive but probably insane)? Although there are certainly plenty of crazy camera operators out there willing to follow someone out the door of a plane to get the perfect shot, there are actually much better (and safer) ways of getting the footage needed to show off some of the most extreme sports on the planet. 1. Other sports enthusiasts. Of course, some of the most exciting shots come from other sports May 3rd, 2012 - May 9th, 2012

enthusiasts who are willing and able to follow their friends around the world and strap on a camera to catch the action. Their videos might not be up to snuff when compared to professional photography, but there is something to be said for the fact that they are right there in the gritty action, catching every moment from a unique and terrifying vantage. 2. Action cameras. These sturdy cameras are both useful and prevalent in capturing the most extreme moments in sporting because they are not manned. They are often attached to surfboards, snowboards, wakeboards, kayaks, motorcycles, and basically any kind of sporting equipment or machinery that will bear them to get front or rear shots of the action up close and personal. 3. Helmet cams. An offshoot of action cameras, these tend to be smaller so that they can be attached to helmets or straps in order to capture the point of view of the individual engaged in the sport, although they can sometimes be maneuvered to take footage of the person’s face (for reaction shots). A remote wristband can be worn by the participant (or anyone within range) to control what the camera captures. 4. A good zoom lens. Professional cinematographers may not be willing to risk their necks in the pursuit of

5. Action photographers. Nobody will get a better shot than an action photographer (not even very enthusiastic friends). They have an eye for framing and the expertise to act quickly to capitalize when they recognize a great shot. All of the professional equipment and planning in the world can’t match up to the finesse of a great action photographer in the execution of his craft.

actions footage, but luckily, they have technology on their side. A good zoom lens will often allow them to get close to the action without actually taking part in it (usually by following in some sort of vehicle…helicopter, jeep, whatever is handy), while still capturing the all of the excellent footage they need.
