In much the same way, the seven founding directors of the company combined their distinct talents and experiences to work towards their shared artistic aims.

Brilliance and passion paint the stage in Arizona Theatre Company’s 20112012 season finale production of Red. The much-anticipated Tony Awardwinning Broadway hit, which explores the world of expressionist painter Mark Rothko, is scheduled to run May 3 – May 20, 2012 at the Herberger Theater Center in Downtown Phoenix. From the Oscar and Tony Awardwinning John Logan, and directed by Richard E. T. White, Red follows the story of Rothko and his young assistant Ken as they prepare for the biggest commission in the history of modern art. Set in 1958, the play covers a span of about a year during which Rothko created over thirty canvases for the Four Seasons restaurant in Manhattan. White explains that the play is not simply a stage documentary about

Roktho, but a snapshot of how anyone deeply engulfed in their work is forced to question his or her own instincts and long-held beliefs about art and life. “John Logan uses the metaphor of Mark Rothko as an artist to explore the question of, ‘How do you create your life’s work?’” White said. “I think that’s something anybody can identify with. One of the keys to the power of the play is that it isn’t simply a re-creation of a historical moment in time, but it’s about a larger question regarding investing fully in your life’s work.” Tickets for Red are $32-$69, subject to change, depending on date and section choice and are available at www.arizonatheatre.org or by calling the box office at (602) 2566995. Discounts are available for seniors and active military. Student tickets are $10 (subject to availability). Half-price rush tickets are available for balcony seating for all performances one hour prior to curtain at the Herberger Theater Center box office (subject to availability).

MICKEY HART BAND TO PERFORM LIVE AT MIM May 19th / 7pm & 9pm Three-time Grammy winner, Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead), will perform with his band at the Musical Instrument Museum on May 19th. Hart is donating 100% of the ticketing fees from tickets sold on MickeyHart.net to Music Therapy research. The show will feature brand new material as well as selections of Hart’s greatest hits and Grateful Dead songs. Hart’s new album entitled Mysterium Tremendum, his first in five years and follow up to the 2007 Grammy award winning Global Drum Project, was released on April 10th, 2012. With Mysterium Tremendum, Hart is pushing the boundaries of what we know as music, creating a genre of his own. “I have always thought of life, the world at large, as music,” says Hart. “This work is a representation of that notion. I have combined sonic images of the formation of our universe with sounds drawn from musical instruments. It’s all about the vibrations that make up the infinite universe. In this case, they began as light waves and these light waves are still washing over us. Scientists at Penn State, Lawrence Berkeley Labs, and Meyer Sound have transformed these light waves into sound waves. These musical excursions transport me to wonderful and strange new places filled with rhythms for a new day. The combination of music from the

whole earth and the sounds of the planets, the stars, the events that formed our universe is intoxicating and points toward an awareness of what music is, could be, and where it comes from.” On Mysterium Tremendum, the Mickey Hart Band consists of Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools, Grammy winning percussionist and longtime band mate Sikiru Adepoju, Tony Award winning vocalist Crystal Monee Hall, singer Tim Hockenberry, drummer Ian “Inx” Herman, guitarist Gawain Matthews, and keyboardist / producer, Ben Yonas. JamBands.com gave the band’s recent tour stop in NYC rave reviews stating that “Mickey Hart is nothing short of a musical genius and it shines through in everything he does. Whether he’s working with George Lucas, NASA, or throwing together a unique group of musicians for a band, it’s apparent that Mickey isn’t satisfied doing the same old thing.” Visit www.mickeyhart.net and www.themim.org for tickets and more information. ‘God Bless America’

‘Dark Shadows’* ‘The Cup’ A young jockey (Stephen Curry) loses his only brother in a tragic racing accident days before the Melbourne Cup, hauntingly reflecting the way their father died 27 years earlier. After suffering through a series of discouraging defeats, he teams with an Irish trainer (Brendan Gleeson) for a shot at the 2002 race. (NR – 100 minutes) Joseph: “The big screen has seen its fair share of horse racing movies. However, between ‘Seabiscuit’ and ‘Secretariat,’ they rarely focus solely on the jockeys. If you have ever wondered why, look no further than ‘The Cup.’ It is difficult to avoid being at least a little corny and cliché when attempting to tackle this genre. Yet, whereas most movies can get away with that inevitable outcome thanks to the undeniable divinity of animals,

An imprisoned vampire (Johnny Depp) is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection. Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloë Grace Moretz, Helena Bonham Carter and Jackie Earle Haley also star. (PG-13 – 113 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

‘Girl in Progress’* A single mom (Eva Mendes) juggles work, bills and her affair with a married doctor (Matthew Modine) as her daughter (Cierra Ramirez) plots a shortcut to adulthood after finding inspiration in the coming-of-age stories she is reading in school. (PG13 – 100 minutes)

With nothing left to lose, a possibly terminally ill man (Joel Murray) sets off on a mission to rid the country of its most repellent citizens. Along the way, he finds an unusual accomplice in a 16-year-old girl (Tara Lynne Barr) who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement. (R – 100 minutes) Joseph: “The characters in ‘God Bless America’ suffer from one of the conditions that they likely loathe about today’s society – an inverse relationship between the amount of time they spend talking about doing something and the amount of time they spend actually doing it. Granted, the conversations between the two protagonists (if you can call them that) in writer/director Bobcat Goldthwait’s new comedy deliver enough depravity to satisfy your craving for that sort of thing in and of themselves. However, we can talk all we want without fear of consequences. It is the application of that talk’s topics that offers the biggest thrill for its vicarious qualities.” Grade: C

‘The Road’*

‘Turn Me On, Dammit!’

A 12-year-old cold case is reopened when three teens are missing in an abandoned road. In the course of the investigation, deeper and gruesome stories of abduction and murders are discovered. After more than two decades, the secrets of the haunted road may finally be revealed. (R – 110 minutes) *Not made available for review.

‘The Salt of Life’* In response to having become invisible to most everyone around him, a retiree (Gianni Di Gregorio)

A 15-year-old girl (Helene Bergsholm) in Skoddeheimen, Norway, is consumed by her hormones and fantasies that range from sweetly romantic images of Artur (Matias Myren) – the boyfriend she yearns for – to daydreams about practically everybody she lays eyes on. (NR – 76 minutes)

‘Transit’ While on a camping trip that is meant to reunite them, a family suspects that they are being followed. However, when they discover $4 million in their luggage rack, the family realizes that four ruthless killers who will stop at nothing to retrieve their money are hunting them. (R – 88 minutes) Joseph: “‘Transit’ may be preposterous but it is easily one of the most entertaining motion pictures currently playing on the big screen. Director Antonio Negret ensures that his new action flick moves along at such a posthaste pace that the viewer hardly has any time to notice the illogicality of its characters’ conduct, which comes courtesy of screenwriter Michael Gilvary. Add to that a strong suspension of disbelief and you may very well need a safety belt while watching this adrenaline-charged thrill-ride.” Grade: B

UltraLuxe Scottsdale Cinemas at the Pavilions at Talking Stick 9090 E. Indian Bend Road in Scottsdale Movie Line: 480-278-7324

The star-studded 2001 film ‘Oceans Eleven’ was originally supposed to feature Bruce Willis, Mark Wahlberg, Danny Glover, Luke Wilson, and Owen Wilson.

Joseph: “Leave it to the Norwegians to make a movie that is equal parts sugar and perversion. At first glance, filmmaker Jannicke Systad Jacobsen’s comedy about the abrupt sexual awakening of a teenage girl ‘Turn Me On, Dammit!’ - an adaptation of a novel written by Olaug Nilssen – may look a little obscene. However, like it or not, life is sometimes exactly that. And although it is certainly shocking at times, this sweet story has an overabundance of heart.” Grade: B

‘Mother’s Day’

Movie News!

By Joseph J. Airdo

‘After Dark Action’ comes to Tempe

In “Mother’s Day,” which was directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, three brothers (Patrick Flueger, Warren Kole and Matt O’Leary) return to their childhood home and, with a little help from their sadistic mother (Rebecca DeMornay), terrorize the new homeowners (Jaime King and Frank Grillo) and their guests. “Last year on Mother’s Day, my mom Shelly saw ‘Mother’s Day’ in a sold-out theater in Chicago. That was pretty out there because it is so not a Mother’s Day movie. Watching my mom’s expression while she was watching the movie was pretty awesome. My mom is like my biggest fan. I don’t think that I could do any wrong in her eyes. I could film dirt on a plate for a couple of hours and I am sure that she would still buy 10 copies of the DVD.” – Darren Lynn Bousman

The caliber of play of all the players in this tournament was top notch. To my surprise, we didn’t hear those familiar words, “Player Out” until well into the third round of play. Four out of six tables still remained after the first break, which was two hours into the tournament.

NEW POKER TOURNAMENT FOR THE LADIES On Sunday April 15, Fort McDowell Casino’s poker room added another event to its tournament schedule - something special just for women poker players. I had the privilege of playing in this inaugural Ladies No-Limit Hold-Em Tournament. For the $65 entry fee you received $5,000 in tournament chips – but, for an additional $5 dealer appreciation fee, you could add another $2,000 in chips to your stack. Before I continue, I have to say a special thanks to the anonymous person who entered me into this event. Tournament director George Hitt called me the night before the tournament and left me a message that a tournament entry had my name on it – no strings attached. This entry was from a gentleman who wanted to say thanks for the articles I had written in this magazine over the years - plus he felt he owed me a little something due to the fact that he had knocked me out of a tournament some years back with a lucky river card and went on to cash big in that tournament - mainly because of the big stack he had taken from me.

and this one was no exception. The tournament staff, headed up by George Hitt does an excellent job of making sure that your poker experience is a good one.

May 10th, 2012 - May 16th, 2012 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

The tournament was underway at 10am and from what I could tell it was an overwhelming success drawing 60 participants with a total prize pool of $3,000. Not bad for a debut event. One player alone brought in 9 players from her local ladies poker club. All of the feedback at the tables was positive and everyone is looking forward to this monthly tournament. It looks to me as though this monthly Ladies event will definitely draw more and more players as time goes by. Check with the Fort McDowell poker room for the dates of future tournaments. Fort McDowell poker room has long been known for its well-run tournaments

I managed to last until the sixth round. I had built up my chip stack, but soon lost it when I broke my cardinal rule of chasing a flush. Having won a few hands after the break, I let my ego take over. You know the feeling that sometimes come over you at the table when you start thinking you are infallible and you ultimately go into overdrive heading for a crash. I thought I had the best hand going in with an A-K of diamonds. Two diamonds fell on the flop. I kept thinking in the back of my brain, “If I make this hand, I will be chip leader”…Right, it didn’t happen! My opponent pulled a straight on the flop, so my delusions of grandeur soon gave way to that walk of shame as you wish everyone good luck as you slowly get up from the table and disappear into the casino. When all the chips settled the winners of Fort McDowell’s first women’s tournament were Gabriella Balderas and Rita Trent who split first place taking home $800 each. Congratulations to the winners. Even though I didn’t make it into the money this time around, I had a great time playing with the ladies at my table. I am looking forward to the next scheduled tournament on Sunday, May 6. Until next time, here’s wishing you good luck at the tables! Write me at marianne. minneci@gmail.com

The BBQ & Blues Festival will include: awesome local Blues bands, a menu filled with food from the best Blues cities In the US, and Frozen Kokopelli Wine Drinks. Dennis Minchella, Kokopelli Winery & Bistro’s owner and winemaker, introduced Arizona’s original BBQ & Blues Event in 2004. Minchella stated, “We love the Blues almost as much as we love the food that surrounds this style of music.” While cranking out the Blues is the focus of the event there will be plenty of chilled wine and beer to taste, Kokopelli frozen wine drinks, plus great food. The menu for the weekend will include: “Roasted Roadkill” (Beef Brisket), BBQ Chicken Pasta, Seafood Skewers, BBQ Glazed Fresh Pacific Salmon, and Banana Split Cake. Frozen drinks like Strawberry Surf and Memphis Blues are a fun feature to cool you off from all the hot music. The Blues will be belted out by Shri Blues Band,

Krimson Kord and a “surprise band”. Kokopelli Winery is a local family owned winery and restaurant. Don and Carol Minchella founded the winery in 1994. Kokopelli Winery is celebrating their seventeenth year in operation producing over 45 wines, which collectively have won over

Steve Greenberg: the godfather of invention “Gadget Nation” author and “Innovation Insider” Steve Greenberg grew up in a family that celebrates invention. With a patriarch who can turn anything into a lamp – “My mother used to joke that if I stayed still too long, he would turn me into a lamp,” he cracks – the entire clan can’t help but poke and prod to see how things are crafted. “Take us anywhere, and we’re knocking on stuff and turning it upside down,” Greenberg says. “We learned that from my dad. It’s very much a part of who I am.” But it isn’t the family’s primary passion. “I’d say we’re restaurant people first, inventors second,” Greenberg says, chuckling. “I mean, we’re the kind of family that, when we’re eating at a restaurant, we’re talking about the next restaurant we’re going to. I’m very big on finding a good meal.”

Summer Apéritifs By Nathan Brugnone, Nathan@AZWineMakers.com

many Pinot Grigios, this one is a lumbering giant stuffed into a petit white dress, resisting any possibility of objective pairing.

But don’t just think white this summer. Arizona wineries are producing some outstanding rosés. And rumor has it that

from somewhere beyond the hiddenmilitary base in Pima County, a Grenache rosé is on the way.

“This is what you eat, before you eat, to make you more hungry.” –Social philosopher, Eric Cartman And to make you thirstier, wine drinkers have invented the aperitif, the appetizer’s copilot. It’s the drink you drink before you drink, or—more likely—while awaiting your table at, say, P.F. Chang’s.But ask a wine dork, and they’ll coerce you into putting some thought into your next prepan-Asian beverage excursion. According to one, “First of all, you’re in Arizona. It’s hot here. Drink a white wine.” Among the suggestions for preloading with seafood: Picpoul (or piquepoul). This grape is known in the south of France for its focused acidityand quenching capability. Enjoy this with oysters and you may swear off the main course altogether. Not into seafood? Try some arbortrained Pinot Grigio from northern Italy. Torre di Luna, or “Tower of the Moon,”is a full-bodied, standalone white with notes of ripe pear and apple blossom. Like

What is an Estate Wine? Rancho Rossa, in Southern Arizona, is proud to offer “100% Estate Wine.” This raises the question - what exactly is an “estate wine”? What wineries put on the label not only tells you about the wine itself, it is also scrutinized by the TTB (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau). Some terms are controlled by laws, and others are not. Terms, like “Estate Bottled” have to abide by specific rules. Any winery that puts these words on their label has to abide by certain conditions for use. The term Estate bottled may be used by the bottling winery on a wine label only if the wine is labeled with a viticultural area appellation of origin and the bottling winery: (1) is located in the labeled viticulture area; (2) grew all of the grapes used to make the wine on land owned or controlled by the winery within

wine tasting

the boundaries of the labeled viticultural area; (3) crushed the grapes, fermented the resulting must, and finished, aged, and bottled the wine in a continuous process (the wine at no time having left the premises of the bottling winery). Because Rancho Rossa is the only Arizona winery making wine exclusively with wines from their own estate and Sonoita is Arizona’s ONLY official AVA, they are the only Arizona winery that can put “estate wine” on their label. When you look at a California wine that is labeled ‘estate,’ you’ll know that they produce their grapes and wine at the same location in a verified AVA. Taking pride in what you grow and where you make your wine is a trademark of quality for ‘estate bottled’ wines. This is why estate wines can also be sold at a premium.

High Elevation Wines By Josh Moffitt, www. ArizonaLandBaron.com

Here in Arizona, the states three main wine regions, Verde Valley, Willcox and Sonoita are all considered high desert. Elevations range from 3500ft to 5200ft. What does this high elevation mean to the resulting wine? The sun is much more intense with less atmosphere to shield the grapes. Therefore the grapevine must produce thicker skins to protect the seeds, so the vine can

reproduce. With red wines, the color and flavor comes from skin. The wine is soaked or macerated on the skins to extract as much color and flavor as possible. The higher the ratio of skins to liquid, the stronger the color and flavor. When the vine produces thicker skins, the liquid content of the grape stays the same so the ratio of skin to liquid is higher. Arizona is not alone with high elevation viticulture. Malbec is very popular these days and Medoza, Argentina produces most of the Malbec on the market. Coincidentally, Mendoza, Argentina is the exact same distance from the equator to the south as Willcox, Arizona is to the north and each has similar elevations. We have a few Arizona wine growers that have planted Malbec. We even have a vineyard owner in Willcox that planted ten acres of Malbec that also own a small vineyard in Mendoza!

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” was second with 5 awards out of 28 entries. California took the most awards with 55, while Colorado had less than half of that with 27. (Although the host state also had almost twice the entries of Colorado). We will see how it plays out in two years when Denver is the host of World Beer Cup. Who do we know that won medals? Let’s start with a shout out to local brewery Four Peaks who took home three medals in the German Style Kolsch (Sunbru), Ordinary or Special Bitter (8th Street Ale) and American Style Strong Pale Ale (Hop Knot) categories.

THE WORLD BEER CUP The World Beer Cup has a reputation as being the Olympics of beer. Well, not officially because that would create some problems with the folks at the official Olympics. But others refer to the World Beer Cup that way. It certainly plays out that way as 799 breweries from 54 countries competed for the right to call their beers World Champions. In fact, the 2012 World Beer Cup was the largest commercial international beer competition ever held.Of 3,921 entries, 1,270 (32.4%) came from outside the U.S., while 2,651 (67.6%) came from theU.S. Of 284 total awards, 72 (25.3%) went to breweries from outside the U.S., while 212(74.7%) went to U.S. breweries. “It’s called ‘The Olympics of Beer Competition’ for good reason,” said Charlie Papazian, president of the Brewers Association, the U.S.-based trade association that has put on the competition every two years since 1996. “The event brings together great brewers from all corners of the globe. Plus, the awards are highly regarded. A brewer who wins a World Beer Cup gold award knows that their winning beer represents

the best of that beer style in the world. Congratulations to all the winners of the 2012 World Beer Cup. The Brewers Association and the proud sponsors of our event thank all participating brewers for their involvement.” How about a few more facts from the competition: Average number of beers entered per category: 41.2

Some other beers in distribution in Arizona that won medals include Blue Moon Vintage Blonde Ale (Gold – Fruit-Wheat Beer), Green Flash Le Freak (Bronze – American Belgo Style Ale), BirraMoretti (Bronze – International Style Lager), The Lost Abbey Gift of the Magi (Bronze- Belgian and French Style Ale), Troubadour Blond (Bronze – Belgian Style Blonde or Pale Ale), OudBeerselOudKriek (Belgian Style Sour Ale), SteenbruggeTripel (Bronze – Belgian Style Tripel), Piraat

(Gold – Belgian Style Strong Pale Ale), Ska Brewing Steel Toe Stout (Gold – Sweet Stout), Schneider Weisse Original (Silver – South German Style Dark Wheat Ale), Alesmith Old Numbskull (Bronze – Barleywine Style Ale), Alaskan Amber (Silver – Irish Style Red Ale), Green Flash Palate Wrecker (Bronze – Imperial India Pale Ale), Oskar Blues G’Knight (Gold – Imperial Red Ale), Bear Republic Black Racer (Gold – American Style Black Ale – coming to AZ in limited quantities), Alaskan IPA (Bronze – American Style Strong Pale Ale) and The Lost Abbey Carnevale (Gold – French and Belgian Style Saison). Of course there are plenty more, but space does not permit us to list every winner. The World Beer Cup Awards Gala is run as essentially the World’s largest beer dinner. Imagine a banquet room with about 4,000 people sitting at large tables with tubs of great beer waiting for the food to arrive. But first imagine walking into a reception where all the leftovers from the judging of the World Beer Cup are being served. There were some amazing beers available, as well as beers that most people had never

heard of. What a great opportunity to sample beers from around the world. The menu for the evening was likewise wonderful. After the reception we were seated to a plate of Charcuterie and Cheese including Hampshire Pork Pate de Campagne, Rillette of Liberty Farms Duck, Winchester aged Gouda and Mt. Tam Triple Crème. The cheeses along with the accompanying breads, pickled vegetables, mustards and more were all locally sourced. The plate was served along with Malheur Brut from Buggenhout Belgium…an excellent first beer. Course number one was Braised California White Sea bass, spring root vegetables, oyster mushroom puree and fava gremolata served with Firestone Walker Pale 31. Next we had aRotolo of spinach, parsnip and roasted hen, parmesan brood served with Ballast Point Sculpin, followed by a third course of Grilled eye of beef rib, potato gratin, fig reduction, truffled deckle pot-aufeu. The Troeganator German Style

Bock from Troegs Brewery in Hershey Pennsylvania was an outstanding companion for the beef. Dessert was almost impossible to think of but then we were served a plate featuring Single source chocolate cake, dark chocolate pudding, salted cocoa nib caramel, fudgesicle sorbet. The perfect beer to finish this off was Left Hand Brewing’s Milk Stout. We also discovered that the beer from the reception was open for anybody desiring to bring a few extra bottles to the table so we hurried out to make some selections. Of course, it was important to have some beer to enjoy between courses. All in all, the World Beer Cup was a wonderful end to a fantastic week at the Craft Brewers Conference and we celebrated with over 130 beers served from specially built tap boxes (put together in two days at the beginning of the week), many of which were rare, including some special tribute beers crafted in honor of the late Danny Williams, who for years had curated the beer for this event as well as Great American Beer Festival. The next World Beer Cup will be held in 2014 in Denver, Colorado. In the meantime, check out the complete winner’s list at www.worldbeercup. org.

LOCAL ARIZONA BREWERS / CHRIS SOPER by “King” James Swann

Hello again craft beer lovers, today let’s continue on our journey through Local Arizona Brewers with Chris Soper, the most proficient home brewer I know. Let me begin by saying that Chris, in a very low key way is “That Guy”. The guy people go to with brewing questions, the guy that volunteers brewing info freely and without expectations to anyone that asks. When I asked Chris if he had anything to add to this article he responded: “I learned to brew because I thought I could brew as well for myself as anything I would be willing to purchase.” He gives quite a bit of credit to homebrewtalk.com, the place he asked questions in the beginning. I asked him what his favorite beer to brew was and was truly happy to hear him reply “Session Beers”. Beginning his study in 2007, Chris now brews beer the way he would like to drink it. He always has 4-5 different brewsON TAPat his house at any given time. “I always have a cider, pale ale, stout, hefe, strong ale ready to tap at any given time”. The Idea is Balance. “I brew for me, for my friends and for the love that comes from sharing my hobby.”

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com

Between Chris’s words I haven’t had much room to tackle my original intent in writing about him! Although he doesn’t brew within established style guidelines he does brew for the people. His pale ales are perfect, his imperial stout known as SOPER DROPPERis dry, balanced and well made. His IPA is to die for. If any one home brewer had the skills to do this on a larger professional scale it would be Chris. Oh, and as you can see from the picture, he likes pizza as well! Until Next week, Cheers and keep those local home fires burning!

“Never Say No to Chronic” Chronic Cantina is a fun little spot that seems a little random. Low key, fun and there is a stripper pole in the middle of the restaurant. When you walk in, if you go to the left then you can order your drinks…more to the right and you can get some comida! The happy hour is MondayFriday 3pm-7pm with ½ off drinks, draft beers, $1 tacos and a $4.99 quesadilla. Tuesday from 9pm-11pm you can indulge on 2 for 1 tacos. I love tacos all the time so I always suggest getting a bunch of those with a Dos Equis. Wednesday nights from 10pm2am they have live acoustic music by Alex Tapia. $4 wells, $4 vodka Rockstar and $6 24 oz. Coors Light. Chronic has now brought back their “Red Solo Cup Party”, $10 red cups all you can drink and $1 for each refill, a great place to be for you college students. Hint:check out the reverse happy hour for a little late night fiesta. I always have a great time here, and the bouncers always seem to be super awesome. 15 East 6th St. Tempe, AZ 85281

“The concept of performing an intimate and autobiographical show presents a huge challenge,” Lake maintains. “My experience of this format last tour [his 2010 outing with ELP keyboardist Keith Emerson] was so invigorating it still gives me a thrill every time I think about it.”

Emerson, Lake & Palmer frontman Greg Lake, who performs at Mesa Arts Center’s Piper Theater on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. as part of his Songs of a Lifetime 2012 tour, is writing his autobiography and will release the first part of the memoir as an audio book in conjunction with the tour.

Lake also intends to sell updated editions of his solo albums and concert DVDs during the tour. The audio book is the first of three installments of the memoir that Lake is planning to make available in that format. A bound version of the autobiography is expected to be published near the end of 2012.

The trek, dubbed Songs of a Lifetime 2012, gets underway Tuesday, April 11 in Québec City and wraps May 26 in La Quinta, California. The legendary bassist, guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and producer will be performing many of the classic songs he sang with ELP, as

specialty martini you had last weekend, that was topped with a twist of lemon you swore was in the shape of one of the swirls in Starry Night, convinced you that art can be anywhere. Then you start to feel deep and see artistic creativity in everything: tattoo sleeves, napkin origami, graffiti, the cleverly designed shape of your coffeemaker. It takes gusto to interpret an idea or emotion into something other than a thought in your head. That’s art and it’s a lot easier to appreciate in a setting that allows you to carry a glass filled with tasty beverage around as you admire it. It takes balls to expose your mental expressions to the world and those who have the courage deserve to have an audience. RAW is a nationwide organization that allows local artists to showcase their works in a setting that’s fun for even those who would rather be playing beer pong on a door in someone’s garage. This Thursday, Scottsdale RAW will be hosting, The Blend, a showcase of varying forms of creativity including visual art, music, and fashion all from

New Wave, Indie, Brit Pop...you like? I do and I love going to Rips on their Obscura nights because of it. Rips is such a hidden and at the same time, not-so-hidden gem in central Phoenix where the hipsters and other people, not into paying $8 a drink, come out to play. This windowless bar with retro sign on 16th street, hosts their Obscura Dance Parties on the second Saturday of every month making it a paradise for Phoenicians who value an array of dance music aside from mainstream electro and top 40. The place is retro and they take pride in throwing you back. I think last time I was there, they were playing Trouble in Little China on the tubes above the bar. I love(ed) that movie. The crowd there is passionate about their dancing and when passionate people come together, the vibe becomes exceptional. And when you get tired of dancing, heading out to the patio for some air becomes a refreshing hiatus; a terrace occupied by specimens who will actually carry an entertaining conversation with you because not only are they tipsy from the cheap drinks, they’re in fact interesting people when sober. Or you can be a creeper and stare at people from the sidelines because that’s fun too-especially there. Saturday, May 12th. 9:27pmish. 3045 N. 16th St. $5. Ages 21+

There is a new outdoor activity gaining popularity in the world of extreme sports. Basic tree climbing, which most everyone has taken part in as a child, is for adults now quite rapidly evolving into one of North America’s latest adrenalineinducing hobbies. yourself to your physical and mental limits. Highly versatile in nature, tree climbing is an activity that almost anyone can enjoy and, because of

its accessibility, tree climbing as a sport will in all likelihood become increasingly popular.

Tree-climbing enthusiasts love the fact that they always have new challenges to overcome in countless diverse settings across the country, and the world, which does a lot to keep things fresh and interesting. Not only do tree climbers have a wide variety of locations to choose from when the mood to climb strikes, they also have the freedom to set their own pace. sport enthusiasts is what separates this sport from the tree-climbing activities that kids engage in around the world. In fact, it’s not uncommon for trees ascended by the sport’s most dedicated participants to reach heights of over 300 feet! As with most other extreme sports, extreme tree climbing places an emphasis on personal achievements and individual growth, not competition. Extreme tree climbing is, above all else, a sport that provides people with the chance to push their limits and accomplish things that others are unable or unwilling to attempt.
