The band became an over-night sensation. So big, it threatened to destroy the kid’s show that launched it. But this is more than a story of the rise and fall of a one-hit wonder band spawned from a kid’s TV show in 1964 Phoenix, Arizona; it is a story about the measure of success in everyone’s lives. KOOZA
Premiering Friday, June 8th and running through July 15th 2012 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, is Cirque du Soleil’s big top production, KOOZA, returning to North America after touring over a year in Japan. Phoenix is the first of only four U.S. cities to host this dazzling production. It is also the only West Coast city on the tour. Since its premiere in Montreal in April of 2007, KOOZA has charmed close to 4 million spectators in North America and Japan. Written and directed by David Shiner, KOOZA is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil that combines
two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility, presented in a colorful mélange that emphasizes bold slapstick humor. The name KOOZA is inspired by the Sanskrit word “koza,” which means “box,” “chest” or “treasure,” and was chosen as one of the underlying concepts of the production is the idea of a “circus in a box.” The show starts with The Trickster bursting onto the scene like a jack-ina-box right in front of The Innocent, and that is just the first of many surprises to follow. The Innocent’s journey brings him into contact with a panoply of comic characters such as the King, the Trickster, the Heimloss, the Pickpocket, the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog. Between strength and fragility, laughter and smiles,

Arizona Broadway Theatre Presents GREASE The Kids from Rydell High Return – First Day of School, June 8, 2012! School is back in session this summer at Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT), and everyone’s favorite Greasers and Pink Ladies are right on time for class! From the Drive-In to the Burger Palace, Grease is the well-loved story of rock and roll, fast cars, and teenage love. The kids from Rydell High take you back to a time of poodle skirts and hair grease, with favorite songs like Greased Lightnin’, Summer Nights, and Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee that will have you dancing in your seat. Making his debut in the director’s chair is one of ABT’s favorites, Adam Berger, returning after his previous musical direction of ABT hits such as The Full Monty and Cats. ABT’s own Artistic Associate and acclaimed choreographer Kurtis W. Overby lends his talents to the high-energy dance of Grease, taking the hand-jive to a whole new level. Playing infamous bad boy Danny Zuko is ABT alum Andres Acosta, who was last seen on our stage in A Chorus Line and Miracle on 34th Street. A graduate of Florida State University’s BFA Musical Theatre program, Andres will be touring nationally as Bernardo in
West Side Story this coming fall and he says he is “delighted and humbled to get the change to come back to ABT and play what I’ve always considered a dream role!” Lauren Devine joins him onstage, playing the well-loved role of Sandy, and she says it is “a huge thrill and honor to get the chance to take on such an iconic role!” Lauren was last seen in Phoenix Theatre’s Gypsy and Lyric Opera Theatre’s production of Cabaret, and as she says, she is “excited to be a part of something that is so beloved in our entertainment culture.” Also taking the stage is Valley favorite and Fox 10 Arizona Morning’s own, Cory McCloskey, playing the Teen Angel in the favorite song “Beauty School Dropout.” Whether you grew up on the songs from the legendary blockbuster film, or the groundbreaking stage musical, there is no doubt you will be singing along with Sandy, Danny, Rizzo, Kenickie, Frenchie, Jan, Doody, Marty and the rest of the class at Rydell High. Grease your hair, shine your dancing shoes, and grab a ride in a classic cruiser to Arizona Broadway Theatre this summer … you won’t want to miss this show! ‘For Greater Glory’ A chronicle of the Cristeros War (1926-1929), which was touched off by a rebellion against the Mexican government’s attempt to secularize the country. (R – 135 minutes)
‘Crooked Arrows’ A coach (Brandon Routh) teaches the members of his Native American lacrosse team the meaning of tribal pride, as they compete against their privileged rivals in a prep-school league. (PG-13 – 105 minutes) Joseph: “‘Crooked Arrows’ is about as formulaic as any other sports story of an underdog team that, through sheer perseverance, overcomes the odds. In other words, we have seen all of this before. Fortunately, though, this indie has two things going for it that set it apart from the betterendowed competition. First and foremost, the sport in question here is lacrosse, which has never before been the focus of such a film. Secondly and more significantly, culture – in this case Native American culture – is the core, thereby adding a little more depth to an otherwise predictable pilgrimage.” Grade: C
Stan: “With the southern border of Mexico prominently in political news as the upcoming elections near, director Dean Wright delivers an aspect of that country’s history and the struggle for freedom of religion that most, as this reviewer, aren’t aware. An outstanding performance by Andy Garcia as the war weary retired general, andthe grand scale cinematic capturing of the country and its citizens, the story of‘For Greater Glory’brings a very human element to our faceless neighbors to the south…” Grade: B Joseph: “With a runtime that rivals that of ‘The Avengers,’ ‘For Greater Glory’ feels like it takes place over the course of an eternity. If it were not for its exasperating length, which is a direct result of several stretched-out sequences and a handful of nonessential scenes, the new historical war drama from director Dean Wright would have been quite a powerful motion picture. Unfortunately, the intentional efforts to qualify this flick as an epic undercut
AZWeeklyMagazine.com
‘High School’ After the principal institutes mandatory drug testing, a senior (Matt Bush) and his stoner pal (Sean Marquette) try to cover up their drug use by getting the entire school baked on tainted brownies. (R – 100 minutes) Joseph: “Everything in director John Stalberg’s new stoner comedy ‘High School’ feels as though it is occurring in slow motion. How is that for irony? Part of the motion picture’s problem is that the screenwriters attempt to take what would have been a single plot point in another movie and stretch it out to sustain an entire storyline. Unfortunately, there are not enough laughs here to compensate for the inadequate amount of material. On the other hand, Adrien Brody’s hilarious performance alone may be worth the price of admission.” Grade: C
‘The Intouchables’ An unlikely friendship develops between a millionaire crippled in a paragliding accident (François Cluzet) and a young man from the
projects (Omar Sy). (R – 112 minutes) Stan: “Reminded of the basics of film school and the prime directive to enlighten, inspire, educate, motivate, and entertain, don’t let the fact that ‘The Intouchables’ is in French detour you from a film that captures the essence of being human and that friendships are certainly much more than skin deep.” Grade: B+ Randy: “Movies are made to entertain you, make you laugh, make you cry and inspire you to leave the theater talking about what you just saw on the way home. ‘The Intouchables’ does all of that and more. Far and away the best film of 2012 so far. In fact, if the Oscars were taking place in June, ‘The Intouchables’ would certainly take the prize in all of the top categories. This sentimental comedy about an unlikely pair of friends will win you over frame by frame. In a crowded summer marketplace of Hollywood blockbusters, this import stands out above the rest.” Grade: A+ Joseph: “‘The Intouchables’ is an incredibly touching motion picture. A strangely cynical sense of humor elevates what, in the wrong hands, could have been an excruciatingly cheesy cinematic experience. Filmmakers Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano carefully fend off forced and feigned feelings to create an

presented an inside dramatic look at indiscretions based on true events, “U.N. Me’ with a blend of comedic inferences against the hard cold reality of true occurrences, director Ami Horowitz nicely straddles that fine line for a stark view of the improprieties of the most powerful organization on Earth. Do stay for the animated insert during closing credits, which in itself is worth the price of admission.” Grade: B Joseph: “I was dismayed to discover that ‘U.N. Me’ is actually a documentary and not a feature-length musical based on the ‘Animaniacs’ short with the same title. While I watched the film, my disappointment continued as I thought about how much more fun I would be having watching the alternative. Having said that, filmmaker Ami Horowitz does what he can to entertain viewers while successfully challenging their perceptions of an organization that we have been made to believe has civilization’s best interest at heart.” Grade: D
Soundbite Spotlight
‘Snow White and the Huntsman’* A young woman (Kristen Stewart) secretly trains in the art of war with the huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who was sent by a wicked queen (Charlize Theron) to destroy her. (PG13 – 100 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

At that I started developing the story and went about the task of producing the movie. “The challenge was to create a movie on a much larger scale than some of the films I’ve been involved with in the past, we were in a large area, recreating the feel of that time in the past, with a very limited budget and having to figure everything out. But I will say that working as a director is always harder and more challenging, the director is the one who has to carry the heavy load and we were lucky that we had our director Bradley Parker who really did much of the hard work, because of his background, he managed to find a lot smart and creative ways to give the movie a scope that we wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise!” – Oren Peli

Director Dean Wright (‘For Greater Glory’) By Stan Robinson “When I read the script, I thought, I need to do this, I need to show the world first of all how beautiful the country is, and secondly, how much alike we are to all of these people, and how we can understand what they were going through. “Put aside what you would do if you were in that position, but just to marvel at what they were capable of doing, and the individual courage and strength of character to stand up, not just for themselves but for the ideals they knew that were essential for the country to remain something that they loved and cherished and what

“I definitely had never read a movie that had as little dialogue and that felt like as much of a challenge on paper as this one did. It was more like reading a treatment or even a longform poem. The descriptions were so sparse and touching – even a little bit heartbreaking – in each of the moments as the character attempts to both break down and repair his soul the same way he was breaking down and repairing the boat. “The character is putting himself in solitary confinement, where he knows he is broken and the only way he can attempt to possibly fix himself is if he kind of breaks himself apart even further. There is a direct relationship between the rotting, decayed state of disaster that the boat is in when he finds it and the state his soul is in, as well. The obvious metaphors and symbols become the things that are driving him. “I find the movie interesting because
it is not the normal story of personal breakdown where you are seeing someone sleeping with prostitutes, doing drugs or being violent – self destructing in those obvious ways. The men in my life who have had real, serious midlife crises have often done so very quietly. Even though the chaos they are going through in their own soul was as tremendously dangerous as anything, from an outward standpoint it was a lonely journey.” – Josh Lucas
Actor Adhir Kalyan (‘High School’) By Joseph J. Airdo “Sebastian is effectively an elitist. He places himself on a pedestal. Those things in his life that he derives the greatest pleasure and satisfaction from are either things that fuel his ego or, alternatively, things that allow him to bear witness to other people’s suffering – especially if those people are less fortunate that he is or people who he deems to be of a lower class. He is someone who reveals himself to be really without redemption. “About 8 months after we shot the film, I went in to do one line of [automated dialogue replacement]. I believe the line I had to say was, ‘Chocolate reminds me of human feces.’ I was in the ADR suite for about an hour doing every conceivable thing I could to try and recreate the voice of the character. The character had just completely left me in terms of his mindset and the way he spoke. “I felt like taking off my shirt and getting in the fetal position on the ground. It was a character that came, I played him and then, once he left, I was not sure at all how I could have played him to begin with. Someone with no conscience is, I feel, considerably far removed from the person that I am on a day-to-day

Actor David Koechner (‘Piranha 3DD’) By Joseph J. Airdo “This was something that I had not done before. I know that I did ‘Final Destination 5’ last year – what actor does not want to die on film – and this is a little bit in the same vein but it is also different because it has got more humor to it. I am always looking for a new challenge. My character Chet is the co-owner and manager of the water park. “Danielle Panabaker plays my stepdaughter. Her mother was the other owner of the water park and
since her mother died she is coowner with me. This sounds like a Disney Channel movie is there is a dead mother involved, no? Anyway, Danielle’s character comes home from college to find out that I have made severe changes to the water park, which is about to open. My character is turning the water park into an adult-themed water park or a swingers water park. “Greed and libido are the two prongs of my character’s forked tongue. You can call [the characters I usually play] loud-mouthed louts or miserable humans. I think that within all of us lies the potential for the worst parts of our angels – our demons, if you will – to overtake us. You model whatever is on the page after some part of you in life that is real and then usually it works out.” – David Koechner

GET YOUR CHOPSTICKS READY FOR SUMMER Sushi Roku at W. Scottsdale Summer Kick Off Party – Sunday, June 3rd 5-8pm Specials will be available Sunday, June 3rd until Saturday, September 1st Attention all valley residents looking to beat the heat with inspired Japanese specials this summer. Get your chopsticks ready! Sushi Roku, located at the W Scottsdale, is serving up not just one, but three new summer specials all with the intent to keep the palate and the vibe cool. 1. Locals Only Prices If you’re a local (and have the proof to back it up), you’re in luck! All locals receive 20% off their meal, all summer long through September. Proof of residency is required and the offer does not apply to happy hour. It’s Sushi Roku’s way of saying arigato. 2. Refreshments Get skinny by the pitcher! Sushi Roku will offer pitchers of Skinny Cocktails to share for $20. That’s sixty ounces of fun, without the calories. As an added treat, Sushi Roku will be dishing up homemade Sake Snow Cones to keep the yin and yang balanced ($5/each). Sake Snow Cone flavors includes Peach, Pomegranate and Watermelon.
3. Sunday Funday at Roku There’s a reason they call it “Funday”. Every Sunday during the summer, DJ Soulman will drop the beats while Sushi Roku extends the happy hour menu all day long. This is not excluded to the bar area; the entire dining room can indulge at happy hour prices. Come over and sashimi! To launch the aforementioned summer specials, Sushi Roku will host a Summer Kick Off Party. Taking place on Sunday, June 3rd from 5-8pm, the party will host a fashion show showcasing poolside styles from Diane’s Swimwear, happy hour will be available all evening, DJ Soulman will provide the soundtrack, and one lucky guest will receive a prize package worth $1250! The package includes: · Dinner for two at Sushi Roku · One night stay at the W Scottsdale · Vitamin A swimsuit from Diane’s Swimwear · CoolSculpting treatment from Van Dyke Laser & Skin · Cut and color from Mane Attraction Salon As added bonus, the first 100 guests will receive a takeaway bag to kick start summer with special offers from Diane’s Swimwear, Van Dyke Laser & Skin, CoolSculpting and Mane Attraction Salon! Since sliced bread: richman seeks out country’s best sandwich
AUTHENTIC THAI CUISINE
Adam Richman became a household name as Travel Channel’s affable adventurer with an encyclopedic knowledge of America’s quirkiest eateries and most gutbusting food challenges. But the lifelong Brooklyn resident also holds a master’s degree from the Yale School of Drama, quotes classic Adam Richman literature with ease, and harbors as much of an affinity for the art and architecture of the cities he visits as he does for the cuisine. So when Richman was scouting a new show concept that would allow him to celebrate the cultural heart and soul of America via food without having to put away six pounds of meat in the process, he came up with an ingeniously simple solution. The result is “Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America,” premiering Wednesday, June 6, which he calls his search for “the best thing since sliced bread on sliced bread.”

Years ago in the midst of a kitchen remodel, locally owned Someburros (Gilbert, Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler) became a household favorite. Fast and fresh, you can’t go wrong with the VegiBurro or Taco Salad. Locals love the Pollo Fundido topped with jalapeño cream cheese. www. someburros.com Opened by George Vasquez and his wife Mary in 1986, Someburros now has 5 east valley locations serving up authentic Sonoran style Mexican food. Most locations offer a phoneahead drive thru window, however I prefer to dine in when possible and enjoy warm chips and fresh salsa. The staff is always friendly and courteous and the food is made-to-order. Kids get a special sugary-cinnamon treat, a free churro with every kid’s meal. Not every night can be homecooked or fine dining. Sometimes you just need to feed the troops and feel good about it. Someburros is a terrific option for getting the family fed and keeping your pocket-book full. Prices range $3-$8. Hot summers in Scottsdale mean one thing, the resurgence of the resort pool party. Now as temperatures rise and summer approaches, Talking Stick Resort invites guests to release themselves from everyday stresses as it launches its Release pool party series. Robert Sweet, along with Oz Fox and Timothy Gaines, make up the legendary hard rock quartet. Looking back over the past 25 years, STRYPER is considered to be a groundbreaking act on all accounts. They are one of the first Christian rock bands to achieve unprecedented success in the mainstream. Their 1986 album To Hell With The Devil is listed among CCM’s “100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music” and the band’s popular power ballad “Honestly” became a Billboard Top 20 hit and reached number 1 on MTV. Their poprock hit “Calling On You”, also entered
special “They Put It Out There” made its debut on Comedy Central in the fall of last year. The new special was taped at the Margaret A. Webb Theater in Santa Ana, CA. and follows the enormous success of Pablo’s last stand-up special, “Ouch!” which continues to stay on the networks most requested list. The DVD “They Put It Out There” made its nationwide release shortly after its TV air date. Pablo once again hits his mark, weaving together his one of a kind arsenal of characters, spontaneous outbursts, spot on impressions and clever insights to create a stand-up show that more resembles an hour-long comedic jazz riff. “They Put It Out There” is an entertaining and off-thewall performance that delivers the laughs and points out the hilarious absurdities in an illogical, pop-culture obsessed world. Pablo recently returned from his third tour of Australia with stops in five cities and sold out shows in Melbourne and Sydney. Previous to that, Francisco had his second visit to the South African Comedy Festival. Francisco’s amazing global appeal catapulted him to rock star status selling out the world renowned Milky Way in

During the parties, sexy sun-worshippers can party to music from some of the hottest DJ’s that Phoenix, Los Angeles and Las Vegas have to offer, while cooling off with a minty mojito, crisp beer or any beverage of your choice from the property’s poolside bar. For those preferring to party in the shade,
guests can rent one of the 18 private cabanas lining the pool. In addition to a personal attendant, cabanas include a complimentary fruit plate, ceiling fan and chaise lounge chairs inside and out. The resort’s deluxe cabanas also include 32” LCD flat screen televisions and fully stocked beverage refrigerators. Release pool parties will run from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. The DJs will preform from 1 – 5 p.m. Admission is free for women and hotel guests, and $10 for men. No covers will be charged on holiday weekends. Talking Stick Resort is located just east of the Loop 101 freeway and Indian Bend Road. Wine: Portal to Inspiration and Health “Wine got drunk with us, not the other way.” --Rumi “Wild roses, Plucked from fields Full of croaking frogs: Float them in your wine and enjoy every minute!” --Ryokan I’m sure you’re aware of the numerous peer-reviewed studies that more than imply that wine brings out creative potentials. So I won’t enumerate the endless list of artists, writers, musicians and philosophers who have climbed the mountain of inspiration with vino as their fuel. I
will not quote anthropologists who claim that wine coaxed humans to become agrarian, thereby catalyzing philosophical and cultural evolution. I refuse to cite the AMA studies that explicitly state the life-extending properties of wine. I will not say that two glasses of wine per day improves cardiovascular health in men. I will not discuss anthocyaninsin this article. I won’t release any information regarding my ninetythree year old grandfather’s love of the beverage. I won’t say that tapas and wine make a great reason to get together. I wouldn’t endorse serving an Arizona white wine at a BBQ. Forget Arizona. In fact, I won’t commit anything to the page that resembles an endorsement of wine in general.

A great way to beat the heat is to head inside, grab a nice cold glass of wine and turn on a movie. Have you seen all the new releases? Check out these classics with a wine theme… Sideways This movie actually changed the way Americans drank wine. Merlot became the villain, and Pinot Noir the hero! “Two men reaching middle age with not much to show but disappointment, embark on a week long road trip through California’s wine country, just as one is about to take a trip down the aisle.” – IMDb. There are even “Sideways” themed wine tours in the Santa Ynez valley! The sequel has been written, called Vertical; only time will tell if the movie gets produced. A Walk in the Clouds Starring Keanu Reeves, this movie inspires the viewer to fall in love and instills the dream of growing wine grapes. “After returning from the war, Paul and a young woman meet on a bus as she’s headed home from college to help with the grape harvest and face her Old World domineering dad. The woman has not married but is pregnant and she thinks her father is going to kill her. Paul proposes to pose as her husband to help her face her father. When their passion for each other is finally ignited and
explodes, they realize they must overcome all odds to be together.” – IMDb Blood Into Wine A documentary about Arizona’s own Maynard James Keenan and Eric Glomski and their wine venture, Arizona Stronghold. At times funny, other times serious, this film ventures onto the Arizona landscape and explains how difficult but fruitful growing grapes in Northern Arizona can be. Find this film on NetFlix. California wasn’t always accepted as a world-renowned wine growing region. “The story of the early days of California wine making featuring the now infamous, blind Paris wine tasting of 1976 that has come to be known as ‘Judgment of Paris’.” – IMDb French Kiss A nice romantic comedy, Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline star in this 1995 hit. “A woman flies to France to confront her straying fiancé, but gets into trouble when the charming crook seated next to her uses her for smuggling.” – IMDb Filmed on location in France, viewers will enjoy the beautiful French landscape and Kline’s character’s passion for French wine.

“My, what a big glass you have” I had the pleasure not too long ago of attending a glassware seminar hosted by Georg Riedel. One of the things I took away from that seminar was a better understanding of the how and why of certain types of glassware. First we taste with our eyes, so we need a clear glass so we can see the color and judge the opacity of the wine. Next as we approach the glass, we smell the aromas of the wine, you see about 75% of our taste is actually smell. . . Finally, we tip the glass back and sip the wine. I won’t go into all the nuances of tasting wine from this point; that deserves its own article.
So, those big glasses you see in fancy restaurants that look like they could hold an entire bottle of wine (and some of them could), are actually designed to hold the aroma, not just the wine. That is why the edges of the glass turn in and are narrower at the top of the glass. All the extra glass gives you more surface area for evaporation when you swirl the glass, allowing for more evaporation and therefore, more aroma for you to enjoy. You see wine connoisseurs are not just trying to be over the top and snobbish by drinking out of such a large glass, there is a scientific reason, a method to the madness. And….it looks cool too! BEER! PATRON SAINTS OF BEER How did important religious personages become the patron saints of various things related to beer? Both universal and local Saints have reportedly performed miracles, either during their lives or afterwards, that involved the working class people and beer. Other saints were designated because they represent beer producing and consuming regions. Centuries ago beer was the daily drink of the people, both because plain water was often polluted and due to beer’s inexpensive, nourishing qualities. Monks brewed beer for themselves as a safe source of hearty sustenance. Monk’s meals were frugal at best, particularly during fast periods. However, consumption of liquids did not break the fast. Without widespread hotel chains, monasteries served as inn’s for travelers who shared the monk’s provisions, especially their robust, sustaining beers. Eventually, the monks were able to also sell their beers at pubs called klosterschenken, and a flourishing trade developed. To build brand loyalty, the names of the monastery’s patron saint was used. To this day many beers bear the name of a saint.

The procedure which the church uses to name a saint, called canonization, has only operated since the tenth century. Prior to that, since the first century, saints were chosen by public acclaim. While this may have been fairer to the general public, it included information that was both legend or fictitious, and eventually the Vatican assumed the authority for approving saints. Among the patron saints of brewers, four are extremely well known: Augustine of Hippo, Luke the Apostle, Nicholas of Myra (also known as Saint Nicholas, or Santa Claus) and the Good King Wenceslas, the latter two also providing a linkage May 31st, 2012 - June 6th, 2012
Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” to the winter season of merriment. Augustine of Hippo, now part of Tunisia, who was born in 345 AD, was known for wild living and significant alcoholic beverage consumption prior to his conversion. His complete turnaround and life of moderation contributed to his becoming a patron saint of brewers. Nicholas of Myra, Turkey is believed to have lived in first half of 4th century, and died between 342 and 350 AD. St. Nicholas is associated with the legend of the Three Clerics, a drama about 3 church scholars who stopped for lodging at an inn, where the innkeeper slew them for their money. A disguised Nicholas invoked God’s help to resurrect them and, by doing so, became a protector over travelers and brewers. Saint Luke who lived during the first century is widely regarded as a patron saint of brewers although there is no obvious reason. Possible connections include his being a physician and knowing that the beer of the time was healthier than the water of the time, and his ability to mix various herbs together for medicines just as they were mixed for beer. Saint Wenceslas, born in the early 900s AD, promoted the spread of Christianity in Czechoslovakia. Wenceslas became famous through a Christmas carol by J.M. Neale, “Good King Wenceslas”, which has
little to do with history but more with Victorian ideals. Because Bohemian hops were so valued, Wenceslas ordered the death penalty for anyone caught exporting the cuttings and obviously endeared himself to the local hop growers and brewers. He became the patron saint of Bohemia and Czechoslovakia and his crown became the symbol of nationalism for the Czechs. By extension he became a patron saint of Czech brewers. There also was King Wenceslas II in the 13th century, who convinced the Pope to revoke an order banning the brewing of beer, again endearing the Wenceslas name to local brewers. King Gambrinus is revered by many brewers as a patron saint. According to folk tales, Gambrinus was King of Flanders. Reputed to have invented hopped, malt beer, the legendary Gambrinus may have actually been Jan Primus, Duke of Flanders, Brabant, Louvain, and Antwerp. Primus, according to the Encyclopedia of Beer, is credited with introducing the toast as a custom. Some others attribute Gambrinus to Jean Sans Peur, known as Ganbrivius. Although there is no evidence of him among the church listings of saints, Gambrinus, called the “King of Beer”, continues to be celebrated by brewers as a patron saint.

Probably the best known Irish saint after Patrick is Saint Brigidwho lived in the late part of the fifth century AD.
Known as “the Mary of the Gael,” Brigid founded the monastery of Kildare and was known for spirituality, charity, and compassion. St. Brigid also was a generous, beer-loving woman. She worked in a leper colony which found itself without beer, “For when the lepers she nursed implored her for beer, and there was none to be had, she changed the water, which was used for the bath, into an excellent beer, by the sheer strength of her blessing and dealt it out to the thirsty in plenty.” Brigid is said to have changed her dirty bathwater into beer so that visiting clerics would have something to drink. Obviously this trait would endear her to many a beer lover. She also is reputed to have supplied beer out of one barrel to eighteen churches, which sufficed from Maundy Thursday to the end of paschal time. A poem attributed to Brigid in the Brussel’s library begins with the lines “I should like a great lake of ale, for the King of the Kings. I should like the family of Heaven to be drinking it through time eternal.” Saint Amandprimarily operated in the regions now considered northern France and Belgium. He established a score of monasteries, many of which likely produced beer. Considered the father of Belgian monasticism, he is associated with the centers of wine growing and beer brewing. Because of his reputation for hospitality, Amand also is a patron saint of beer and wine merchants. Following the collapse of the roof of an abbey brewery in Flanders, Saint Arnold of Soissons asked God to multiply the stores of beer which were left for the monk’s consumption. When Arnold’s prayer was answered in abundance, the monks and townspeople were prepared to canonize him on the spot. While Arnold of Soissons is best known for his miraculous provision of beer, he Continued on Page 40...

is also credited with a most practical improvement upon the brewing process. While weaving bee skeps for the abbey’s apiary, the abbot realized that the straw cones could be used as a filter to further clarify the brother’s beer. In remembrance of this contribution to the brewer’s art, the saint is often portrayed--as on the certificates of the Belgian Brewers Confederation--in the company of bees with one hand resting upon a bee skep. Arnold of Soissons also is considered the patron saint of hop pickers because of the region in which he preached. Hops originated in Brabant region of Belgium. They became more widespread when a Belgian princess married a Kentish prince and the dowry included land across from a brewery. Belgians reportedly sent the first hops to England for use in making beer. “Don’t drink the water, drink beer” warned Saint Arnold of Metz, concerned about the dangers of drinking impure water. He believed that the polluted water caused illness, while the boiled and processed water used for beer was a safer alternative. According to legend he ended a plague when he submerged his crucifix into a brew kettle and persuaded people to drink only beer from that “blessed” kettle. He is reported to have said “From man’s sweat and God’s love, beer came into the world”.

Hildegard von Bingen was a benedictine nun, the Abbess of Diessenberg, and a well-known herbalist, mystic and musician. Although she has not yet been canonized, she has been beatified and is considered a saint by many people. Hildegard was a highly enlightened woman who overcame social, cultural, and gender barriers and became an advisor to bishops, popes, and kings. She used the curative powers of natural objects for healing, and wrote treatises about natural history and medicinal uses of plants, animals, trees and gemstones. Her writings include the earliest known reference to using hops in beer “(Hops), when put in beer, stops putrification and lends longer durability.” For many centuries, brewers have invoked the names of patron saints to bless and protect their beers. Since the early brewing process was not well understood, often times the batch of beer was not fit for drinking. The poor quality was mystically blamed on evil spirits and specifically on “brew witches” or “beer witches.” The last known burning of a beer witch was in the late 1500s. Now that we have vastly improved beer quality, when you quaff your next pint, consider the saintly company with which you are associating and who may be looking over you. May the Saints bless your pint.

Hello again Craft Beer Lovers, today let’s finish our month with a look into Arizona Home Brewers couple, Sean and Kat Morrill. Yes you heard it right, a local couple that home brew together! Honestly, I wanted to end this with a BANG and couldn’t think of a better way than with a manner which sees home brewing bringing love to a couple.
BEER! SECTION
HOMEBREWING AS A COUPLE, SIMPLY HEAVEN!
Sean and Kat found home brewing as they began looking for a way to leave a Mazda Miata Racing hobby that took more time than either could afford to part with. As I understand, both Kat & Sean were quite accomplished drivers and what better hobby than home brewing to take their imagination and relationship to the next level? Their first brew was a meticulously engineered Vanilla Porter. They found immediately that their individual inputs made for great team work, Sean being quite adventurous and Kat being controlled with a penchant for pre planning. Together they made they made the perfect Reese’s Peanut Butter CupCommercial!Yes, I know that last bit was terrible… Give and take is what a relationship is all about and that’s what this couple finds most important about Brewing. Each of them loves shopping at the home brew store for they never have to justify their purchases with one and another.I can’t tell you how much I love this!
Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com
Next up, and as with all the brewers I have interviewed so far, it’s all about camaraderie and community. Both Sean and Kat’s families live two thousand plus miles away. Their love of home brewing has made them many friends who are now like family. A close knit group of caring people who are always willing to let new friends into the fold. As always, this is King James Swann, your humble beer correspondent signing off.

Funny for me to write about this place, since it took over the spot my old restaurant used to be. Cocina Del Sol has done a much better job with this location though; in Scottsdale Quarter. I love the warm tones as soon as you walk in, it truly is inviting. I can seriously eat Mexican food every day of my life, and then my body would show it. This place offers flavorful cuisine in smaller portions; your body will thank you later. They serve their food baja style, with the grilling of fresh meat and pacific seafood in the open kitchen. On the happy hour menu, everything is $7.50 and under, except for one drink that was my choice on the happy hour menu, and the best deal. You can do a vertical tasting of tequila with three ounces of blanco, reposado, and anejo for $12. I love tequila more than any other liquor; makes you nice and warm. The lemon mezcal street tacos are so flavorful with the mezcal sauce for only $4.50. The cocktel de mariscos is something you will crave often after you have had it with: shrimp, scallops, octopus, pico de gallo, chile and cucumber, spicy tomato-lime sauce, and diced avocado for $6.50! The happy hour is seven days a week from 4pm-7pm and I don’t recommend passing this place up. 15323 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85254

Larry Hernandez In Concert Saturday, June 9th Larrymania! Celebrity Theatre welcomes Mexican regional superstar Larry Hernandez to its circular stage at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 9th.
Neil Flynn of “The Middle” on ABC “I watch a lot of things. ‘Parks and Recreation’ and ‘30 Rock,’ ‘Modern Family.’ I like ‘The Killing’ on AMC. HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones.’ I just watched it last night. I just saw ‘Veep.’ ”
May 31st, 2012 - June 6th, 2012 AZWeeklyMagazine.com
Larry Hernandez has been crowned “The Kind of Corridors” for his compelling “street music” that’s sung rather than rapped and that’s filled with themes of life and the hustle of the street. Hernandez rose to mainstream success in 2009 with 16 Narco Corridos, a smash hit album comprised of almost entirely selfwritten material that he recorded in one day. The collection, featuring vivid depictions of drug trafficking culture, spawned three hit singles (“El Querendón y Cajetoso,” “El Baleado,” “Pilotos Canabis”) and reached number four on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart.
The live album En Vivo: Desde Culiacán followed later in 2009. En Vivo: Desde Culiacán reached number two on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart, giving Hernandez two albums in the Top Ten at the same time and confirming his status as one of the year’s greatest regional Mexican revelations. Hernandez’s latest chart-topping album is aptly titled Larrymania.Last year, at the first ever Billboard Latin Music Awards, the up and comer took home two awards: Regional Mexican Airplay Artist of the Year, Solo and Regional Mexican Albums Artist of the Year, Solo. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets ($20, $35, $55 and $85 in advance; $25, $40, $60 and $90 day of show) are on sale now at Celebrity Theatre or online at www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-2671600 ext.1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge.

Perhaps if you lived in one of the coastal states, yacht club soirees and seaside wine tastings would be the norm on spring nights. But you don’t. Instead, you live in the desert where sunsets are splashed with amber, scarlet, and amethyst ribbons and where saguaro cacti become shadows as our yellow moon rises in the sky. Along with the mesquite trees that are sprinkled throughout our landscape, are golf courses--over 200 of them. So instead of feeling envious of those trying to enjoy themselves in a brisk wind by the sea, enjoy yourself in the leftover warmth of our desert sun as you sip on varieties of vino, beer, and hors d’oeuvres and feel the excitement that twilight promises on a weekend eve. Overlooking this 4 star golf course, is Ahwatukee’s Annual Winetasting Festival where over 50

Vodka and red bull, whiskey and coke, tequila with a splash of orange juice and grenadine…all beautiful concoctions that make your mouth salivate for more and your blood pump harder for a nice feeling you can’t stay away from for too long. Tequila and red bull, vodka and coke, and whiskey with orange juice and grenadine don’t sound as appealing, now do they? Like many things in life, the perfect combination is vital in creating something worthwhile. You wouldn’t want to wear new, gorgeous, painful pumps to a secondrate club and listen to dreadful music as you sip on some nasty cocktail unless you live somewhere deep in the sticks and are in desperate need of entertainment. Luckily most of us don’t live in Apache Junction. We have options of where to go on the weekends and those with desires to dance should make the right choice by attending Axis Radius’s Republic nights. This Saturday, DJ AN21 will be performing and playing mixes that his big brother, Steve Angello, helped him bang out to create concoctions of greatness. Being the younger brother of one-third of the Swedish House Mafia really helps make you a better DJ. In the ever-growing world of Electronic Dance Music, DJs need all the big-name drops they can get. Tiesto, Max Vangeli, Sebastian Ingrosso, Gorillaz, and Ellie Goulding have all been blended with AN21, bringing his music to the forefront and helping him to earn the International Dance Music Awards’ (IDMAs) ‘Breakthrough DJ of the Year Award’. Well isn’t that fancy? YouTube AN21 and the jam, H8RS, to understand. With such the perfect combination of beats and setting, this Saturday night is bound to cause

SHARK ATTACK!!! How to Fight Back….
What Types of Sharks Attack Humans? While over 360 different shark species exist, only 20 species are known to attack humans. Of those 20 species, only four have been involved in a significant number of fatal, unprovoked attacks on humans. The first step of beating your enemy is knowing your enemy. Let’s take a look at these four maneaters so you know what to scout for the next time you’re out in the water. Types of Shark Attacks There are two types of shark attacks: provoked and unprovoked. Provoked attacks occur when the human touches the shark first. These usually happen when some knucklehead scuba diver tries to feed a shark or grab its tail on a dare. If you’re dumb enough to grab a shark by its tail, you deserve whatever you get. Sorry. Unprovoked attacks happen when you’re just chilling on your surfboard

In the area of unprovoked shark attacks, scientists have observed three different kinds: the hit and run, the bump and bite, and the sneak attack. The Hit and Run. This is the most common type of attack. It occurs in surf zones where swimmers and surfers are easy targets. The victim usually doesn’t see the shark before he feels its teeth sinking into his flesh. After sneaking up on the victim like a ninja, the shark will take one bite and then swim off, never returning.

Your chance of surviving a hit and run attack are pretty good, barring the shark hitting any vital organs with his bite and if you get medical attention immediately.

and a shark swims up, bites your leg, and pulls you down into the water Jaws-style. Why do sharks attack humans? It’s probably not for food. Humans don’t make a good meal for sharks because we don’t have the fat that sharks need to power their huge, scary bodies. It’s more likely the shark is just figuring out what you are. Unlike most animals that check things out by looking at the object or smelling it, sharks just bite the hell out of whatever they’re exploring. It’s messy, but it gets the job done.
Bump and Bite. Unlike the hit and run, the victim will often see the shark before it attacks. The shark will start off by circling its potential victim and giving him a few bumps with its snout. You know. To mess with you. After sufficiently scaring the crap out of you, the shark will start biting you. Repeatedly. Bump and bite attacks result in severe injuries or fatalities. They usually occur in deeper waters, but can sometimes occur near shore. Sneak Attacks. Sneak attacks are sort of like the hit and run- the victim usually can’t see the shark before the attack. But unlike the hit and run attack, where the shark will take a gnaw of your arm and then swim off, in sneak attacks the shark will bite repeatedly. Usually until you die. Next week…. How to fight back, with equal ferocity!

On tBS, you’re the creator of the comedy “Men at Work,” while on tNt, you’re one of the stars of “Franklin & Bash,” premiering this week. you’ve said “Men” is based on yours and your friends’ experiences, so have you borrowed anything from your “F&B” co-star, Mark-Paul Gosselaar?
a: No, I haven’t taken anything from Mark-Paul. This is all based on my life kind of right before that.
